The preface, however, was written by Rawley during Bacon's lifetime and the first issue has a letterpress title dated 1626 (STC 1169. Gibson 171.)#11;#11;#11;On the books:#11;#11;1) The Historie of the Raigne of King Henry the Seventh. The only historical work written by Bacon. Possibly part of a planned history of England he never lived to complete. A couple of passages refer to Columbus and his contemporaries. #11;#11;2) "Sylva Sylvarum" is a collection of Bacon"s scientific experiments and observations in natural history, which were intended for inclusion in his "Instauratio Magna." The work was edited and published posthumously by his friend William Rawley. #11;#11;3) The appended "New Atlantis" is one of Bacon"s most popular works and has served as inspiration for many scientific organizations. "It ranks among the best known and most pleasant of the Utopian writings." (Bernal 305)#11;#11;#11;On the author (from the Encyclopedia Britannica, (11th ed., 1911) Vol. V03, Page 144):#11;Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban, KC (22 January 1561 ! 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman and essayist but is best known for leading the scientific revolution with his new 'observation and experimentation' theory which is the way science has been conducted ever since. He was knighted in 1603, created Baron Verulam in 1618, and created Viscount St Alban in 1621; both peerage titles became extinct upon his death.#11;He began his professional life as a lawyer, but he has become best known as a philosophical advocate and defender of the scientific revolution. His works establish and popularize an inductive methodology for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method. Induction implies drawing knowledge from the natural world through experimentation, observation, and testing of hypotheses. In the context of his time, such methods were connected with the occult trends of hermeticism and alchemy. Since the 19th century, there have been occasional claims that Bacon was the author of the works attributed to Shakespeare.#11;#11;

Foxe, John
2 volumes of] Acts and Monuments of Matters most Speciall and Memorable happening in the CHurch with an universal historie of the same. Persecutions against true Martyrs. [commonly called Foxe's Book of Martyrs]
|
Company of Stationers. London 1641 - Published in 1641. 65 plates + engraved titles. Folio. Bound in the original full leather bindings. Foxe?s Book of Martyrs was first published in 1563. The second edition was published in 1570; the third in 1573 and the fourth in 1576. Foxe died in 1587. This is the eighth edition, printed in 1641. This is an incomplete set. The third volume is missing. It chronicles the martyrs during the reign of Elizabeth Foxe?s Book of Martyrs is a monument itself. It has been in print continuously for nearly 450 years. It inspired generations of Christian believers and defined a schism between Papists and Protestants and Puritans and Anglicans that remains ingrained to this day. It is not overreaching to posit that after the King James Bible, the Book of Martyrs can make a claim at being one of the most significant religious works in English. The following is a detailed pagination: First page, ?The Booke of Martyrs.? Barely attached. Title page, detached. Engraved. ?Acts and Monuments of matters most speciall and memorable, happening in the Church, with an universall Historie of the same. Wherein is set forth at large, the whole Race and Course of the Church, from the Primitive age to these later times of ours, with the bloody times, horrible troubles, and great Persecutions against the true Martyrs of Christ, sought and wrought as well by heathen Emperors, as not lately practices by Romish Prelates, especially in this Realme of England and Scotland. Now againe, as it was recognized, perused, and recommended to the studious Reader, by the Author, Mr. John Fox, the eight time newly Imprinted. Whereunto are annexed certaine Additions of like Persecutions, which have happened in these latter times. Apoc. Vii. Salus Sedenti super Thronum & Agno. London. Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1641.? 4 pages (2 leaves) of Kalendar pages, showing from May to December. 2 pages missing. 3 pages in Latin, ?Ad Christum Eucharisticon? 3 page dedication to the Queen, with extraordinary woodcut initial. 3 page Ad Doctum Lectorum, in Latin. 8 pages, ?A Protestation to the whole Church of England.? 3 pages ?The Utility of this Storie.? 5 pages ?To all those Professed Friends and Followers of the Popes.? 2 pages ?Four Considerations given out to Christian Protestants.? 3 pages, poem in Latin, ?In Martyrologium? by Fox, and a short poem by Jo. Hopkins 12 pages ?Table of Tables? 70 pages Chronologie, up through 1576. Act and Monuments, pages numbered 1-756 then 767-1010. [no missing text, this is merely a printer?s error.] Then pages 1015-1018 (torn & detached), 1025-1028 (detached). This volume should contain 1033 numbered pages, so there are 5 pages missing at the end & 4 pages missing just before the end. No other pages. No rear endpapers. 26 plates in this volume, including 1 full page plate (and not including the title page). Bound in full leather. Probably the original binding. Leather is scuffed and skinned. Raised cords. Spine peeling from the spine to reveal sewn signatures beneath. Corners are bumped and perhaps even chewed. 10? x 15? x 4.25?. There should be a frontispiece engraved portrait of Foxe, but it is missing. The next volume. Engraved title page. ?The Second Volume of the Ecclesiasticall History: Containing the Acts and Monuments of Martyrs: With the Persecutions stirred up by Romish Prelates in the Church. And divers other things incident to this Realme of England and Scotland from the time of King Henry 8 untill the beginning of the Raigne of Q Mary. Whereunto is added, in this Volume, the life of the Author, Mr. John Fox, in Latine and English: Together with divers materiall matters, left out in all Editions since the first. London. Printed for the Company of Stationers. 1641.? 2 Pages, introduction to the Life of John Fox. 20 pages, the Life of John Fox 2 pages, Ad Lectorum (in Latin). 14 page, life of John Fox (in Latin). Amsterdam, 1641. A rather good example of this map of the north of England, with some limited hand-colouring. c. 1640. French text to verso. Two small holes to the margin have been restored leaving small circular areas slightly lighter, but this could be easily hidden by a mount. One small restored hole to one mountain in the image is only noticeable by a slightly lighter shade circel surrounding it. Small tape repair to verso of central fold at top. Otherwise very tidy with no tears, loss, stains, etc. A very presentable example of this popular map. . Early Edition. Map. Very Good/No Jacket. 22 By 18 Inches.

Downing, Calybute.
A Sermon Preached to the Renowned Company of the Artillery, 1 September, 1640. Designed to Compose the Present Troubles, by Discovering the Enemies of the Peace of the Church and State. Published by the Honourable House of Commons.
|
[Prin]ted by E[dward] G[riffin] for John Rothwell,, London: 1641 - Small 4to, removed, [6], 29 [i.e., 39] pages. Britain's internal enemies will "Call other men Traitors, when they themselves are the rankest Rebels; render religious Christians as ill affected civill subjects: and revile the wisdome, conscience, and representation of a State in Parliament, as a Faction, a Combination, a pack of *Puritans*; but wee hope before long, the word *Puritan* shall prove a good name, when some of theirs may degenerate." A watershed sermon from Downing (1606-1644), preached in defiance of the established order; among other arguments congenial to the view of the Commons is his claim that in defense of religion and reformation it is lawful to take up arms against the king. Instance of small contemporary marginal autograph mark. Bound without leaf A2, as seems to be the case in most copies (viz. the copies noted in Thomason, McAlpin, DFo, CSmH, and the Honourable Artillery Company's copy). Final leaf repaired. Wing D-2105; McAlpin Collection II, page 32; Thomason E.157 (4). Small flaw to the title; some light staining; a little nibbling along the upper edge, with loss to the border (but not touching text); a good, sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

BACON, FRANCIS LORD VERULAM, VISCOUNT ST. ALBANS.
THE HISTORIE OF THE REIGNE OF KING HENRY THE SEVENTH. Whereunto is now added a very usefull and necessary Table.
|
London, printed by R. Y. and R. H. and are sold by R. Meighen 1641 - Third edition, folio, 290 x 190 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, frontispiece portrait of Bacon engraved by William Marshall in 1640, engraved title page with architectural border, pages (16), 248, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spine, all edges red. Occasional light foxing, a couple of pages foxed all over, a little light brown staining in a couple of places, no loss of text, pale damp stain to lower margin on 30 pages towards the end, another on inner margins of last 10 pages, final page dusty and slightly soiled. A very good tight copy. Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) (later Lord Verulam and the Viscount St. Albans) was a lawyer, statesman, essayist, historian, intellectual reformer, philosopher, and champion of modern science. Early in his career he claimed "all knowledge" as his province and afterwards dedicated himself to a wholesale revaluation and re-structuring of traditional learning. To take the place of the established tradition (a miscellany of Scholasticism, humanism, and natural magic), he proposed an entirely new system based on empirical and inductive principles and the active development of new arts and inventions, a system whose ultimate goal would be the production of practical knowledge for "the use and benefit of men" and the relief of the human condition. At the same time that he was founding and promoting this new project for the advancement of learning, Bacon was also moving up the ladder of state service. His career aspirations had been largely disappointed under Elizabeth I, but with the ascension of James his political fortunes rose. Knighted in 1603, he was then steadily promoted to a series of offices, including Solicitor General (1607), Attorney General (1613), and eventually Lord Chancellor (1618). While serving as Chancellor, he was indicted on charges of bribery and forced to leave public office. He then retired to his estate where he devoted himself full time to his continuing literary, scientific, and philosophical work. He died in 1626, leaving behind a cultural legacy that included most of the foundation for the triumph of technology and for the modern world as it is currently known. This account of the life of Henry VII is Bacon's only historical work, first published in 1622. Images sent on request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CAMPANELLA, Tommasso.
De monarchia hispanica. Editio nouvissima, aucta & emendata ut præfatio ad lectorem indicat.
|
Amsterdam, Louis Elzevir, 1641. Finely engraved alegorical title page. (4 ll.), 379 [i.e. 376] pp. Page 376 misnumbered 379. * , A-Z , 2A . 24º, contemporary stiff vellum (ties gone; small defect to spine), horizontal manuscript author and title on spine (rather faint). Fraying at outer edge of title page and next four leaves, affecting a few letters of text. Some small dampstains. A somewhat less than good copy. Contemporary ink inscription on title page. Engraved armorial and pictorial bookplate of Robert R. Livingston of Clermont (1746-1813), New York legislator and revolutionary patriot. This work is an able account of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century politics, especially Spanish, as well as being a basic political economy text for the period, including a chapter on governing the American colonies, and one on navigation. It was translated from the original Italian manuscript and published first in German, then translated into Latin. Tommaso Campanella (Stilo, Calabria, 1568 – Paris, 1639) was one of the most important philosophers of the late Renaissance. His best-known work is the utopian treatise @La città del Sole; inspired by Plato's @Republic, but, in reality, his thought was extremely complex and engaged with all fields of learning. The fundamental core of his thinking was concerned with the philosophy of nature (what would nowadays be called science), magic, political theory and natural religion.Campanella's reflections on Machiavelli, and on “politicians” in general, constituted one of the most forceful aspects of his thought. His deliberations focused, above all, on two closely connected points. On the one hand, he underlined the philosophical limits of Machiavelli's theories—limits that made his political constructions inherently fragile. On the other hand, he developed and inserted into a Catholic and Counter-Reformation context an element that was already present in Machiavelli, especially in his Discourses on the @First Decade of Livy: the view of religion as one of the most powerful bonds in the human community. Both these elements are found in this central text of Campanella's political thought, the @Monarchia hispanica. From the outset, he expresses the doctrine of the three causes that are at the origin of political associations—God, prudence and expediency—in order to highlight the inadequacy of a vision of history, characteristic of politicians, that is limited solely to human causes. The first cause, that rules and governs the others and that is always present, even if in hidden ways, in all historical events is, of course, God. This means that a skillful and shrewd politician must endeavor to integrate empirical causes into more general ones. To this end, it is indispensable to have recourse to the “highest sciences” of prophecy and of astrology, that enable one to insert particular events into a universal background.Appealing to biblical texts, Campanella maintains that the Spanish sovereign can aspire to the monarchy of the world if he takes inspiration from the model of Cyrus, invested by God, as Isaiah (45.1) confirms, with the mission of liberating the Church from infidels and of bringing together all peoples under a single faith. For the Catholic king the only practical way of achieving his own universal plans is through a firm accord with the Church and with the pope, following the example of Constantine and Charlemagne. Campanella further stresses that religion is the most powerful bond of political unity. Machiavelli, too, had emphasized the strength of this bond, when analyzing the events of the Roman Republic, but then had condemned the Christian religion as a cause of weakness, strife and divisions. Campanella has no doubt that religion, whether true or false, is the primary and most powerful unifying force in the political body, in that it rules over souls and brings them together, and that all other ties between human beings depend on it.The two other primary causes of political associations are prudence and expediency. Here another key element in Campanella's thought comes into play: the return to nature. Political associations, like all other natural entities, are living organisms. The main task of political action will therefore be to promote the most effective union among its members. The virtue specific to this activity is prudence, which has the job of reinforcing natural bonds and coming up with unifying techniques designed to strengthen the ties of individuals with the whole, of integrating unlike with like and of attenuating the most violent conflicts, so that the result is the correct functioning and prosperity of the entire organism. When he speaks of prudence, Campanella insists on distinguishing it from Machiavellian cunning and from “reason of state,” drawing on various clever and subtle contrasts and distinctions. While prudence is an instrument of organic unity, cunning and reason of state are nothing but techniques designed to affirm individualistic egoism and, for this reason, are doomed to failure, as is amply demonstrated by the tragic end of Machiavellian heroes, whose successes are revealed to be merely apparent or ephemeral, or by the sad life of tyrants, constantly plagued by suspicions and fears. The wise politician is one who, having as his aim the solidarity and well-being of the whole community, is in a position to promote three different types of bond. First of all, there is the bond of souls, achieved by the impetus given to the humanities and sciences and to religion. Secondly, there is the bond of bodies, in relation to which Campanella insists on the expediency of increasing marriages by all available means, encouraging unions between individuals of different physical constitution and temperament and between the Spanish and other nations, in order both to spread "Spanishness" to other nations and to temper the vices of the Spanish people, who often arouse hatred for their humility when serving and for their pride when commanding. The third bond is that of goods of fortune; here it is a case of encouraging the economic prosperity of people by means of developing commerce and especially navigation, the vital lymphatic system that makes it possible to unite distant lands and to connect the separate limbs of the empire.@Provenance: Robert R. Livingston of Clermont was a classmate of Alexander Hamilton and John Jay at Kings College (now Columbia University). The Clermont estate was established in Dutchess County, New York in 1728 and remained in the family for seven successive generations — 230 years. Robert R. Livingston, son of Judge Robert R. Livingston and Margaret Beekman served with Thomas Jefferson as a member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. He took office as Secretary of Foreign Affairs in 1781 after it took Congress over nine months to select a candidate for the position. Recorder of New York, 1773-1775, Member of Continental Congress, 1775-77, 1779-81, 1784-85, on committee of five which drafted Declaration of Independence, Member of Provincial Congress, 1775-77, Chancellor of New York, 1777-1801, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, 1781-1783, administered oath to George Washington as first President of United States, 1789, Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New York State, 1784-1801. Chancellor Livingston concluded his public career as Thomas Jefferson's Minister to France between 1801 and 1804. While in Paris, he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and entered into a partnership with Robert Fulton, a Pennsylvania-born painter and inventor who shared Livingston's fascination with steam navigation. Their creation, which they called the North River, is known to history as the Clermont. Their steamboat embarked on its maiden voyage between New York City and Albany in 1807, setting off a transportation revolution. Copinger, @The Elzevier Press 765. A Sermon Preached to the Renowned Company of the Artillery, 1 September, 1640. Designed to Compose the Present Troubles, by Discovering the Enemies of the Peace of the Church and State. Published by the Honourable House of Commons
|
London:: [Prin]ted by E[dward] G[riffin] for John Rothwell,, 1641. First edition.. Small flaw to the title; some light staining; a little nibbling along the upper edge, with loss to the border (but not touching text); a good, sound copy.. Small 4to, removed, [6], 29 [i.e., 39] pages.

Ampie note esegetiche in calce. Consuete bruniture. Bell'esemplare. Cfr. Zatelli, La Bibbia a Stampa da Gutenberg a Bodoni, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, n. 132 e passim. Silvestre, 1134. Gamba, 1799. Ebert, 2269. Mappa Æstivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas dictarum...
|
Amsterdam, Jan Jansson, 1641. 400 x 515mm. Original colour. One of the most decorative maps of Bermuda based on the famous survey by Richard Norwood of the Bermuda Company, also known as the Somers Isles Company in 1618. The map shows the division into the original Tribes, a short-lived name for what became administrative parishes, who were the major shareholders in the company. Also shown are the various landowners, with their names in a table below the map. There are many tiny houses shown on the map, locating settlements, as well as minute cannons marking the defensible points. The map is superimposed over a chart of the Atlantic with the coastlines of Britain, North America and Hispaniola showing the location of Bermuda. Decorated with an exquisite strapwork cartouche, a coat of arms, a medallion and a compass rose.

Proceedings in the Opening Session of the Long Parliament
|
Boydell & Brewer Ltd - This last volume of Proceedings in the Opening Session of the Long Parliament covers the period from 19 July through 9 September 1641. Both houses were by now growing thin as weary lords and commoners began to leave London for families in the countryside, knowing they would be back in the city by October. The king left for Edinburgh in August, not to return until autumn. In closing up for the recess the parliamentary body lost nothing of the w ork started, even while negotiating the final arrangements for peace with Scotland. The reader is again struck by the committee structure and the means for handling personal and somewhat private naturalization bills while at the s ame time keeping on track the major public bills regarding episcopacy and the nature of the Council and courts. Maija Jansson is director of the Yale Center for Parliamentary History. Condition: Brand new (not pre-owned). Binding: Year first printed: 2005. ISBN: 9781580462181. Volume in series: 6

Louvois, Marquis De, Francois Michel Le Tellier (1641-1691).
Letter Signed, Regarding the Annexation of a New Room to the Hospital
|
Versailles, December 7, 1689. -One-and-a-quarter pages with over 80 words penned in French on both sides of a 12-3/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet. In reply to a letter of November 30th, the Marquis de Louvois writes that the King is in favor of annexing a new room to the hospital since there is insufficient room to house all of the sick. Signed "Louvois". Annotated in ink at the top of an attached blank leaf "Lettre du Mqrs de Louvois du 7 Decembre, concernant la nouvelle Salle de l'hospital". Folded, else near fine. Francois-Michel le Tellier, Marquis de Louvois (1641-1691; though sometimes his birth date is given as 1639). French Secretary of State for War to King Louis XIV who, with his father, increased the French army to 400, 000 soldiers. Louvois succeeded his father as war minister in 1666. Turenne, recognizing his talent during the War of Devolution, instructed him in the art of providing armies. During the brief years of peace which lasted from 1668 to 1672, Louvois devoted himself to organizing and building the French army by enrolling the nobility and gentry into its ranks. He reorganized the order of merit and founded the Hotel des Invalides. The changes brought about by Louvois led to French victories in the Franco-Dutch War (1672-78). Louvois played major roles in the capture of Strasbourg and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Indeed, Louvois is credited with inventing the dragonnades, a policy that sought to intimidate Huguenots families into either leaving France or converting to Roman Catholicism by billeting especially troublesome dragoons within Protestant households. Louvois' sudden death in 1691 was accompanied by suspicions that he may have been poisoned.

Downing, Calybute.
A Sermon Preached to the Renowned Company of the Artillery, 1 September, 1640. Designed to Compose the Present Troubles, by Discovering the Enemies of the Peace of the Church and State. Published by the Honourable House of Commons.
|
London: [Prin]ted by E[dward] G[riffin] for John Rothwell, 1641 First edition. Small 4to, removed, [6], 29 [i.e., 39] pages. Small flaw to the title; some light staining; a little nibbling along the upper edge, with loss to the border (but not touching text); a good, sound copy.

Leycesters Common-wealth: Conceived, Spoken and Published with Most Earnest protestation of all Dutifull good will and affection towards this Realm, for whose good onely, it is made common to many
|
[London.:]: [N.P.],, 1641.. Modern marbled-boards, rubbed, title on paper-label; old signature "Kath. Ayloffe" on t.p., t.p. soiled and creased vertically, upper right corner off with no text affected, minor damp and mold stains.. 4to.. In the same year Leicester was held up to the nation's detestation in an anonymous pamphlet, first issued at Antwerp as OThe copye of a letter wryten by a Master of Arte at Cambridge,O but better known as O Leicester's Commonwealth.O The author, who is assumed on highly doubtful grounds to be the jesuit Parsons, tried to prove that the ancient constitution of the realm was practically subverted, and that the government of the country had been craftily absorbed by Leicester, whose character was that of an inhuman monster. All offices of trust were, it was alleged, in his hands or those of his relations. The corporation of Leicester replied to these charges by entertaining the earl at an elaborate banquet on Thursday 18 June, while he was staying with his sister, the Countess of Huntingdon. Sir Philip Sidney, Leicester's nephew, circulated a vindication of his uncle and his family (printed by Collins in the OSydney PapersO). On 26 June 1585 Elizabeth issued an order in council forbidding the book's circulation, and asserting on her own knowledge that its charges were false. As an historical authority it certainly has no weight, but as an indication of the hatred that Leicester had succeeded in exciting, it is of importance to his biographer. "DNB Wing L968. BACON, FRANCIS LORD VERULAM, VISCOUNT ST. ALBANS.:
THE HISTORIE OF THE REIGNE OF KING HENRY THE SEVENTH. Whereunto is now added a very usefull and necessary Table.
|
London, 1641. Third edition, printed by R. Y. and R. H.. and are sold by R. Meighen, 1641. Folio, 290 x 190 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, frontispiece portrait of Bacon engraved by William Marshall in 1640, engraved title page with architectural border, pages (16), 248, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spine, all edges red.
