Paris: C. Barbin, 1671. Rare 1671 imprint of Parts I & II of the Mémoires, eventually issued in six parts in 1674. (Also issued 1672 as Les avantures ou mémoires de la vie de Henriette Sylvie de Molière). 12mo. 19th century cloth. 78, 69pp. Each part with separate title page. A-C12, D6; A-B12, C11. Very good copy with slight darkening to pages of first part. Mémoires de la vie de Henriette-Sylvie is an epistolary novel from a character's point of view: an author who has often been subject to false accounts of her life and character. "In time the heroine realizes the futility of attempting to control her reputation by telling the truth. Instead she opts to participate in the circulation of the rumors, while maintaining an ironic distance from false accounts, and recognizing the inevitability of unkind gossip" (Lalande who suggests many autobiographical events between the novel and the life of Desjardines). Completed in 1674, "the Mémoires comprises six long, first-person letters... [that] tell the story of an abandoned infant of uncertain parentage who, as a young woman, is thrown out into the world on her own after her foster father attempts to rape her. The Mémoires is neither an autobiography, nor a novel, nor memoir, nor an epistolary novel, but a text that has something of all these genres... This is her most striking work. The text, which has a number of picaresque elements, skillfully mixes real events from the author's life with fictional adventures, creating a firs-person tale of an independent and enterprising woman" (Kuizenga). This work, along with Scud'ey's epistolary fiction Lettres amoureuses de divers auteurs de ce temps (1641), are the first French examples of the narrative form that would be so popular in the eighteenth century (Stephens). Villedieu is credited by historian Pierre Bayle with the invention of the gallant tale, which replaced the long sentimental novels that had been fashionable (as quoted in Kuizenga). The 1671 edition was almost certainly issued alone as Parts I&II. Only one other copy has been located in the British Library, also Parts I&II alone. According to most sources, Mémoires was published by Barbin in six parts as follows: Parts I&II were published in 1672, Parts III&IV and V&VI in1674. One copy in OCLC (College of Charleston, SC) describes the publishing history as Paris: [s.n.], Year:1672-1674: Imprint of v. 1-2 have date 1672, v. 3-6 have date 1674. Kuizenga's new commentary and translation of the Mémoires writes repeatedly that the novel was first published in 1672. The 1671 edition is not mentioned; moreover, a good deal of information is provided about the author's writing career and the publisher Claude Barbin's publishing relationship with Villedieu. The BnF does not have the 1671 edition. Their 1672-74 edition adds the following note: Attribué à Mme de Villedieu, à d'Alègre ou à Subligny. This early publication may reflect the first attempts to publish this important novel. Viulledieu, Catherine des Jardins, Mme de (1640-1683). She wrote some thirty short novels which had a considerable vogue in their day. The best of the novels is said to be Mémoires de la vie de Henriette-Sylvie de Molière (Oxford French). Called the George Sand of the seventeenth century, she was the daughter of a prevot de la marechaussee and of a lady in waiting of the duchesse de Montbazon. She was born at Alencon, probably in 1632 (although Leris & Mouhy have the date as 1640). She became known locally for her verses and escaped to Paris after an amorous adventure with a cousin, Tallemant des Reaux, where she may have become an actress. She was protected by the duchesse de Montbazon and became a well-known author, writing occasional verse, novels, letters, and plays. Although much has been made of the linkage of the name of the heroine to the life of Armande Bejart Molieré's first wife; Most contemporary criticism, including Kuizenga's, say nothing of this linkage and deal instead with the relationship of the heroine's life to that of the Mancini sisters (Lalande), or to the author's life, herself. The Molieré bibliographer includes this novel, calling this a "curieux roman," in the bibliography because it has an account of the Fêtes des Plaisirs de l'Ile enchantée (Guibert p. 822). There was a translation into English, The Memoires of the Life, and Rare Adventures of Henrietta Silvia Moliere, as they have been very lately published in French with remarks done in London: J.C. for W. Crooke, 1677 (Wing D1191-2). Provenance: Jean Meyer. References: Stephens, Sonya ed. A History of Women's writing in France. Cambridge U, 2000; Villedieu, Marie-Catherine-Hortense de. BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Lasminum flor. alb. [White jasmine]; Lasminum flor. lut. [Fragrant jasmine]; Acanthus Leuis [Acanthus or bear's breech]
Eichstatt: 1640, 2nd edition. Hand-coloured engraving. In good condition with the exception of a natural printer's crease across the top left corner of sheet. 20 3/4 x 16 3/8 inches. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

Saffroy, 17724. Labarère, Essai de bibliographie pyrénéiste, I, 961. Palau, 150 854. Exemplaire de prix, au armes du Parlement de Normandie poussées au centre des plats, et accordé sur les fonds de cette Cour au jeune Jean Le Febvre élève de cinquième, par le Collège archiépiscopal de Rouen, alors tenu par les Jésuites (comme l'atteste un feuillet manuscrit soigneusement caaligraphié relié en début de volume).

BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Ricinus Minor [Castor bean]; Campanula Autumnalis Dodonei [Marsh gentian]; Gramen Pernassi [Grass-of-Parnassus]
Eichstatt: 1640, 2nd edition. Hand-coloured engraving. 20 5/8 x 16 1/4 inches.

[XAVIER, FRANCISCO] & [CUNHA RIVARA, JOAQUIM HELIODORO D...
Small 4to. Pp. (iv), 145, (3) + cat. 4. Somewhat later calf, with blindstamped elaborated dentelleson covers, spine with five raised bands and title label. First edition. Francis Xavier de Santa Anna was a Carmelite who later became the Vicar Apostolic at Verapoly. According to the preface this is the first time Xavier's grammar of the Konkani language is being published. Cunha Rivara further explains that this work is more modern and easier to comprehend than the grammar by Thomas Stephens (or Estevão), first published in 1640 and again published in Nova Goa in 1857 by Cunha Rivara. Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha Rivara, born in Portugal 1809, and in 1855 appointed Secretary General of Portugese India. He did important philological studies of the Konkani language and published many documents of historical importance for Portugese India. The publication of his main work "Ensaio historico da lingua Concani" (Nova Goa 1857) as well as other linguistic works became the turning point in the history of Konkani literature, though its impact would be felt many years later. He discovered old manuscripts which he brought to the light and had published, of which this is one example. See M. Saradesãya: "A history of Konkani literature: from 1500 to 1992", pp. 76-82. An attractive copy of an uncommon work. We have only been able to find 4 library copies (2 World Cat., 1 Berlin and 1 Strasbourg).

Leiden, Franciscus Heger, 1640. – Willems 1611. The present series of etchings date from Della Bella's enormously productive and successful stay in Paris, where he worked from 1640 to 1649, etching prints on a wide variety of subjects: military, landscape, theatrical, religious, architectural, &c. They demonstrate his fascination for seaports and marine views, of which he produced several sets, large and small. The second series includes three harbour views of Amsterdam, one showing Herringpacker's Tower, two of Calais, one showing the Tower of Calais, and one of of the stormy strait between Calais and Dover. These are often cited as evidence that Della Bella visited Amsterdam in 1646 or 1647 (see Phyllis Dearborn Massar, Presenting Stefano della Bella Seventeenth-century Printmaker, pp. 114-117) De Vesme 787-793; 794-801. PARKINSON, John (1576-1650)
Theatrum Botanicum, the theatre of plants
London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. Folio (13 4/8 x 8 1/8 inches). Additional engraved title-page with portrait of the author by William Marshall, in excess of 2,000 woodcut botanical illustrations throughout, sectional head- and tail-pieces and initials (last leave laid down, one or two marginal tear s with early repairs affecting the image on page 403, some minor spotting and a few mostly marginal stains). Contemporary calf (rebacked preserving the original spine, extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: Modern bookplate of Marshall on the front paste-down. "one of the two main pillars of botany in England till the time of Ray" (Henrey, p. 79, quoting the 19th-century botanist Sir James Edward Smith). First edition. A founding member of the Society of Apothecaries in 1617, Parkinson's best-known work is his "Paradisi in sole paradisus terrestris, or, A Garden of All Sorts of Pleasant Flowers ! with a Kitchen Garden ! and an Orchard" (1629). "The book of more than 600 pages was dedicated to Queen Henrietta Maria, for which Charles I gave him the title of "botanicus regius primarius". This was the first work published on English gardening, and it had descriptions of almost 1000 plants, with many of the entries giving evidence of cross-breeding and careful selection. Parkinson's second work, which occupied him for many years, was "Theatrum botanicum" (1640), with more than 1700 pages. This described some 3800 plants and showed his extensive reading of the period's authorities; of particular value was the almost entire incorporation of Caspar Bauhin's "Pinax", for its synonyms. Parkinson divided plants into seventeen 'tribes', based partly on their medicinal qualities and partly on habitat" (DNB). Parkinson identified 28 new British species in his "Theatrum!" including the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) of western Ireland, and the lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) of Lancashire. "The descriptions in many instances are new, and great care was exercised to secure accuracy in indicating localities... His arrangement, founded sometimes on medicinal qualities, sometimes on habitat, sometimes on apparent botanical differences, shows how little progress was made in classification by the herbalists" of this period (Hunt, quoting J. R. Green, History of Botany in the United Kingdom, 1914). Henrey 286; Hunt 235; Nissen BBI 1490; STC 19302. Catalogue description prepared for and on behalf of Arader Galleries by Kate Hunter. .

BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
Herba Paris [Herb paris]; Digitalis flore incarnato [Common pink foxglove]; Digitalis flore luteo [Yellow foxglove]
Eichstatt: 1640, 2nd edition. Hand-coloured engraving. 20 5/8 x 16 1/4 inches.

D'Allemagne, Henry René. Le noble jeu de l'oie en France de 1640 à 1950. Quarante-huit tableaux etnotices. Original edition of 700, this is no. 300. Ce magnifique ouvrage de reference sur le sujet, est illustree par 110 illustrations dans le texte et 48 gravures hors-texte dont 9 en couleurs de Jean Kerhor. The Game of the Goose (Das Gänsespiel (german), Gioco dell'oca (italian), Jeu de l'oie (french), Juego de la Oca (spanish), Ganzenbord (dutch), Gaspelet (swedish)) is thought to be the prototype for many of the commercial European racing board games of recent centuries. The game is therefore mostly played in Europe and seen as family entertainment. Commercial versions of the game appeared in the 1880s and 1890s, and feature typical old European characteristics such as an old well and kids in clothes from the period. It is claimed that the game was originally a gift from Francesco I de' Medici of Florence to King Philip II of Spain sometime between 1574 and 1587. In June 1597 John Wolfe had attested that the game existed in London. In his 1899 novel Le Testament d'un excentrique, Jules Verne uses the United States of America as a giant real-life Game of the Goose board, on which seven players race each other in pursuit of a $60,000,000 inheritance. The game was also the basis for a game/stunt show in Spain, El gran juego de la oca (The Big Goose Game). It ran from 1993 to 1995, and again in 1998 as El nuevo juego de la oca (The New Goose Game). A version of this show was also produced in Italy. The Royal Game of the Goose requires 2 or more players, a gameboard, 2 dice, and 1 counter per player. The gameboard pattern is a spiral of 63 fields, from the outside to the inside. Many fields have special hazards or benefits for players who land on them. The object of the game is to travel along the spiral from field 1 to field 63, and the first player who successfully lands on field 63 by an exact roll of the dice is the winner. On each turn, a player rolls the two dice and advances the counter along the spiral by as many fields as the sum of the two dice. The player must deal with any situation on the space landed on, be they hazards or benefits. Whenever you land on a field with a goose, you move double the sum of the dice you just rolled. If that puts you on yet another goose, advance again, until you no longer land on a goose. (You may land in a trap yet, after all this wild-goose chasing.) One of the attractions of the Game of the Goose was its potential as a gambling game. Players would ante 4 tokens at the beginning of the game and pay one token at each of the 6 special fields. If a player landed on another player's field, both paid one token and changed places. The winner took the pot. [Bougeant, Guillaume Hyacinthe, S.J.].
Arlequin Janseniste,
Four anti-Jansenist plays (three bound together) All four plays concern the bitter theological, and also legal rivalries, that inflamed French intellectuals from the late 17th century, surrounding the ideas of Cornelius Jansen who published his Augustianis in 1640. The rivalry had a great impact in the legal professions, in their fight against the crown, but also it showed up on the stage beginning with the strong Janesim of Racine, and the ridicule of mysticism by Moliere, and in the arch-scroundel Tartuffe, and extending into the 18th century. [Bougeant, Guillaume Hyacinthe, S.J.]. "Cracovie" [i.e., Douai]: "Chez Jean le Sincere, Imprimeur Perpetuel", 1732. 8vo, [2] leaves, 172 pp., [1] blank leaf. First edition under this title of an Anti-Jansenist Satire by the French Jesuit historian Guillaume Hyacinthe Bougeant (1690-1743). The play was first published the previous year under the title Critique de la femme docteur. Bougeant's La Femme docteur 1730 (see next entry ) , which had an enormous success, dealt with the then current theological quarrels between the Jansenists and the Molinists. In the present Arlequin Janseniste, Bougeant defends his original play against the attacks of the Jansenists and sides with the Molinists. For the actual place of publication see: Weller, Die falschen und fingirten Druckorte, II, p. 94. Comedie. "A Cracovie" (i.e. Liège), "Chez Jean le Sincere, Imprimeur perpetuel" (i. e., J. P. Gramme), 1732. [14], 159 pp. Note(s): Author, actual place of publication and printer from Backer-Sommervogel./ Signatures: *8 ( -*1, blank?) A-K8. Possible FIRST EDITION (there was another edition that same year with an imprint of The Hague). In this anti-Jansenist comedy by Bougeant, the supposed miracles that occurred at the grave of the pro-Jansenist theologian François de Paris (1690-1727), in the cemetery of St. Medard, which had become a place of fanatical pilgrimage and wonder-working, are mocked and satirized. Bougeant also takes the opportunity to poke fun at lawyers who are too involved in theological matters (an allusion to Molière's depiction of ignorant physicians). There was also a La Haye: Chez Pierre l'Orlogem 1732 edition as well as an Amsterdam edition 1733, Brussels 1732. Guillaume-Hyacinthe Bougeant born at Quimper in Brittany, in 1690; died at Paris, 1743. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1706, taught the classics in the College of Caen and Nevers, and lived for a number of years in Paris until his death. In his three celebrated comedies, Le Femme Docteur, Le Saint déniché, and Les Quakres français he satirizes the Jansenists. The first of the three went through twenty-five editions in a few months, and was translated into Italian, Polish, Spanish, and Dutch. Between 1725 and 1737 he contributed many articles to the Mémoires de Trévoux. (Guldner). References: Backer-Sommervogel,; I, col. 1878, no. 13 BOUND WITH: Delille, D.C. Le Docteur Fagotin, comedie en trois actes. Namur: n.p., 1732. [2] leaves, 66p. First edition of an attack in dramatic form against the notorious physician Michel Procope-Couteaux (1684-1753), member of the Paris Faculté de Médecine, and occasional comic dramatist. Procope-Couteaux, the son of the founder of the café "Le Procope," the oldest and still popular restaurant in Paris (on the Rue de l'Ancienne Comédie), was involved in most of the literary controversies of the time, due partly to a physical deformity (he was a hunchback). Thus, Rousseau referred to him as a 'Little Aesop,' and Lesage introduces him as a character in Gil Blas under the transparent pseudonym Cuchillo (i.e. Couteau), describing him as a 'puny member of the faculty of medicine' ("petit avorton de la faculté"). Besides writing comedies, Procope-Couteaux also published some medical works, including a bitter diatribe against a book on mineral springs by the Belgian physician D.C. Delille, of Liège. Delille, in the present satirical drama, defends himself against the attacks of Procope-Couteaux, who is here named Fagotin ("Buffoon"). The three plays 8vo. bound together in contemporary calf, back gilt in compartments; corners worn and some light surface shelf-wear. Very nice condition. References: § I. In 1551 de Vos left Floris and went to Rome, where he studied the works of Michelangelo and then to Venice where he became first the pupil then the friend and collaborator of Tintoretto. He was highly successful in Italy, executing commissions for the Medici among others. Le Muet, comedie.
Brueys, Abbé David-Augustin de. (1640-1723); Palaprat, Jean (1650-1721). Le Muet, comedie. Paris:T. Guilain, 1693. Original edition. Cioranescu 17, 51746. 12mo. Old wrappers. Leaf of title, verso blank; 1p priv 30 January 1693, achevé 4 May 1693; 1p acteurs; 160p text. Collation: []2, A-N6, 02. Five act comedy of intrigue in prose. Set in Naples. A Baron has two sons, Timante and the chevalier. Timante wishes to marry a young widow who is a countess, while his father wants him to marry the daughter of the marquis. The countess has a beautiful young ward, Zaïde, of unknown origin, who was brought to the countess by a sea captain. The intrigue of the play involves an attempt by the second son, the chevalier, to successfully disguise himself as a mute valet in order to be near Zaïde, with whom he is in love. Unfortunately, the sea captain will not let Zaïde marry a mute, and the Baron will not let the Chevalier marry Zaïde. A happy ending for all involved follows the unraveling of the girl's true parentage. Le Muet is based on Eunuchus of Terence. This version is considered to be superior to the adaptation of La Fontaine because it is cleverly modernized. The play was very popular until the death of J.-B. Raisin, in 1693, who acted the character of Frontin, the valet who dominates the intrigue. It was republished and revived in 1716 and acted "with fair frequency" until 1832 (Lancaster). Jean Palaprat, dramatist born in Toulouse, is best known for this play, also for L'Avocat Pathelin (1706) and other comedies; Abbé David-Augustin de Brueys, dramatist from Aix-en-Provence, was converted to Catholicsm by Boussuet. Aside from his comedies, he wrote a Christian tragedy, Gabinie, a set in the time of Diocletian. He is best remembered for his collaboration with Palaprat. References: Solennine 3343 (later edition). It was also published by Hondt, in La Haye 1694. OCLC: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Latrobe.

PARKINSON, John (1576-1650).
Theatrum Botanicum, the theatre of plants.
London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. - Folio (13 4/8 x 8 1/8 inches). A founding member of the Society of Apothecaries in 1617, Parkinson's best-known work is his "Paradisi in sole paradisus terrestris, or, A Garden of All Sorts of Pleasant Flowers with a Kitchen Garden and an Orchard" (1629). Parkinson identified 28 new British species in his "Theatrum " including the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) of western Ireland, and the lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) of Lancashire. "The descriptions in many instances are new, and great care was exercised to secure accuracy in indicating localities.
