Histoire de l'Entrée de la Reyne Mere du Roy tres-chrestien, dans les Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas. (with ) Histoire de l'Entrée de la Reyne Mère du Roy tres-chrestien dans la Grande-Bretagne.

London, J. Raworth for G. Thomason and O. Pullen, 1639. FIRST EDITIONS. two vols. in one. Folio. 70unnumbered ll. (including plates, last blank) + 43 unnumbered ll. (including plates). Roman letter, large floriated initials and headpieces, typographical tailpieces, superb engraved additional title of an angel holding a medallion portrait of Marie de Medici above allegorical figures of death and time, and 14 engraved plates (including one large double folding page), four by W. Hollar. Vol 2 engraved additional title of four allegorical figures surrounding the arms of Marie de Medici, and 13 engraved plates (including one large double folding page), engraved title and three portraits by W. Hollar. André Eugène de Walsh's autograph C1700 at head of first title, armorial library stamp of the Château de Serrant on both titles, large baroque bookplate of M. di Tramoglia (Henry, Duc de la Tremouille) signed 'B.P.V.' on front pastedown, sale notice, Sothebys 1955, penciled above, small label of Paul and Mariane Gourary beneath. First title slightly dusty, light marginal age yellowing, a few pale dampstains at gutter of first few ll of both vols. Fine, large copies, on thick paper, crisp and clean, with excellent strong impressions of the plates, in contemporary polished vellum over boards. Rare first edition of La Serre's description of the famous visit of Marie de Medici to the Dutch Republic in 1638, beautifully illustrated with portraits by W. Hollar and with exceptionally fine etched views of the entrée of the French Queen Mother into various Dutch cities, bound with the extremely rare continuation of her voyage to England, also superbly illustrated with portraits and views. Landwehr and Fairfax Murray ascribe all the engravings to Hollar, but Pennington, Parthey and Hind only the frontispieces, the view of the States General and portraits. Hollar lived at the time at London with the Earl of Arundel, enjoyed the patronage of Charles I and was one of the foremost engravers and illustrators of his day.Marie de Medici, mother of Louis XIII, exiled in 1630, escaped to Brussels in 1631 (after the failure of her attempted coup against her son), where she lived for seven years, supported by a Spanish pension. She continued intriguing against Richelieu and was forced to flee to Holland, greatly to the indignation of Philip of Spain, who at once stopped her allowance. Her visit to Amsterdam was considered a diplomatic triumph by the Dutch, as it lent official recognition to the newly formed Republic; accordingly she was given an elaborate ceremonial royal entry. Spectacular displays, by Claes Cornelisz Moeyaert, and water pageants took place in the city's harbour. There was a procession led by mounted trumpeters; a large temporary structure erected on an artificial island in the Amstel River was built especially for the festival. The structure was designed to display a series of dramatic tableaux in tribute to her once she set foot on the floating island. She was accompanied by the present author, Puget de La Serre, from Toulouse, librarian of Gaston d'Orléans and prolific author of novels and histories. His description of Marie's voyage is magnificently illustrated with splendid views of the towns visited and the pageants and ceremonies, including a magnificent double page view of her procession approaching Hertogenbosch where she was met by Prince of Orange. There are further fine etchings showing her disembarking at Gorcum, Dordrecht and at Rotterdam. The whole procession is shown again nearing The Hague, and at Amsterdam a boat-show on the canals is depicted. At Leiden the 'Entrée' is shown on a quay alongside a canal, and the last plate, shows the Queen Mother's dramatic stormy channel-crossing to England. Following her travels through the Netherlands, she sought refuge in England which was granted by Charles I. Marie had a grand reception and St. James's Palace was given her as a residence, where she kept a court of her own. However she was mobbed and insulted by the people, even in the palace and forced to leave in 1641. The work is illustrated with superb views of her arrival in Harwich, her entrée in Colchester, the country houses she stayed at through East Anglia, and her entrance to London. The magnificent double page engraving representing Marie's public entrance into London is particularly interesting; it is one of only two street views extant of the City previous to the great fire. The scene shows the royal cortege in the middle of Cheapside, by the Cheapside Cross, one of the crosses erected by Edward I, to mark the nine resting places of the body of his beloved queen, Eleanor of Castile, on its way from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey. It was destroyed by order of parliament in May 1643. It also depicts the Cheapside Standard, rebuilt in the reign of Henry VI. Stow describes it exactly as represented in this engraving. There are numerous trade signs seen in the illustration; every house had a sign, as shop windows were too small to afford any idea of the trade carried on within. This is followed with scenes of her arrival at St. James Palace, the receptions there, and a view of the Thames, the Tower of London and the firework display that celebrated her arrival. The fine engraved frontispiece and three portraits are among Hollar's finest productions. A superb copy, extremely rare with both parts, of a most interesting and important work.Henry de la Tremouille 1599-1674, was a celebrated French general, cousin of Condé and grandson of the prince of Orange, William the Silent, also the grandfather to William III of England. De la Tremouille's last active service was in Italy - where he received the wound that enforced his retirement. A. Walsh, was from a Jacobite ship owning family, resident in St. Malo after 1685, which provided and manned the vessel which took Prince Charles Edward to Scotland in 1745. The family bought the Chateau de Serrant in 1749 and became Comtes de Serrant in 1755. The château passed back to the Tremouille family in 1830 when Valentine Walsh de Serrant married Charles, Duc de La Tremouille. STC 20488 + 20489. Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies 106. Pennington, Descriptive catalogue of the etched work of Hollar (1982), nos. 463, 1687, 2675; Parthey, Wenzel Hollar (1853), nos. 463, 1687, 2675; Hind, Wenzel Hollar (1922), pp. 3, 11.L1023

The instruments and medicines for a surgeon's chest, with their uses, are clearly described, followed by sections on acute surgical problems, potentially lethal medical conditions, a discourse on scurvy, and a treatise about alchemy and chemical medicines. Woodall's is also the earliest comprehensive clinical account of scurvy to prescribe lemon juice for its prevention and cure...Between 1626 and 1628 the Barber&endash; Surgeons were authorized to supply surgeons' chests for the navy, merchant marine, and the army, which prompted Woodall to publish in 1628 his Viaticum, the Path-Way t

Racine, Jean (1639-1699)
Andromaque. Tragédie
|
Racine, Jean (1639-1699). Andromaque. Tragédie. Paris: Théodore Girard, 1668. Five act tragedy in alexandrine verse. First performed on 17 November 1667 before the court of Louis XIV in the Louvre in the private chambers of the Queen, Marie Thérèse, by the royal company of actors, called "les Grands Comédiens", with Thérèse Du Parc in the title role. The company gave the first public performance two days later in the Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris. First edition first issue (Tchmerzine IX, p 338 issue "A" based on Picot) with angels and flowers ornament on titlepage matching that in Tchemerzine; on bottom of leaf a3r vous ne pos -; on bottom of leaf a4r Mais, MADAME; p.71 is numbered 67. 12mo. 18th century red morocco gilt, highly gilt rules with repeated chestnut, shuttlecock and butterfly device; spine with repeated chestnut device within frames. Spine slightly darkened but a very charming binding. Text with some slight soiling and light pencil marks. Leaf of title, verso blank; 6p A madame signed Racine; 3p Virgile av troisies; 1p acteurs; 95p text; 2p priv dated 28 Dec 1668. Collation á6, A-D12, ornaments in text; errors in paging: 73-74 omitted in numbering. After the defeat and sack of Troy, Hector's widow Andromache and her son Astyanax have been given as slaves to Pyrrus king of Apirus. The tragedy centers around Andromache's attempts to remain faithful to the memory of Hector and, at the same time, save the life of her son Astyanax, who is the last of the Trojan royal line. In Racine's play, three other and distinct and conflicting interests are brought forth: Andromache is loved by Pyrrhus, Pyrrhus by Hermione, and Hermione by Orestes who has come to murder Astyanax. The multiple character conflicts in this play show the different world view in Racine's age when compared to Virgil's time when he wrote the Aeneid: In Racine's play, Andromache is able to save her son while preserving her purity and love for the memory of Hector. In Book III of the Aeneid, which Racine credits as the source of his play, Andromache's son Astyanax has been killed by the Greeks" (Aeneid 650-653 Fitzgerald translation Vintage, 1990). Lancaster notes other differences between the Greek world view in Euripides' play of the same name. Racine modernized the manners of all the characters, but "he had, in short, preserved the intense emotions of the ancients... He thus brought out the tragic conflict between social usage and fierce emotion and gave the first example of a new type of tragedy, in which a veil of decorum that had not existed in the time of Euripides is lifted at the proper moment to make us feel more keenly the horror that lies behind it." In sum, Racine was primarily a French classical dramatist who continued the work of Corneille, Rotrou, Tristan and others but, to distinguish himself from them, he appealed to the Greeks in somewhat the same way that German critics were subsequently to do in order to free their dramatists from imitation of Racine... He became the most Hellenic of the French classical dramatists" (Lancaster). The play was immediately successful, although it brought forth criticism. Adrien-Thomas Perdou de Subligny's dramatic satire, Folle Querrell. La Critique d'Andromaque argues Racine's conclusion was badly written and contained errors that Corneille would not have made. It was produced by Molière in 1668, but only helped to make Racine's play better known than it might have otherwise been, since Racine responded to the spoof with Les Plaideurs. Subligny's criticism did little to halt the rise of Racine's reputation. Andromaque was mentioned as a leading tragedy in Poisson's Poète Basque and in Bousault's Satire des Satires. Andromaque went through a second edition, Paris: Loyson in 1673, with changes and a new preface. In the 1668 edition Andromache speaks to Hermione after the murder of Pyrrhus. These verses were removed for the 1673 edition because Racine feared they might be understood as indicating the Andromache grew to love Pyrrhus. Racine, who wrote only 12 tragedies from 1664-1690/9, was only twenty seven when he wrote Andromaque. It is now considered to be the equal of Corneille's Le Cid and has been acted at the Comédie Française alone 959 times between 1680 and 1920. Of Racine's plays, only Phèdre was staged more times at that theatre. Woodall] and emblem, 4 (of 5, lacks the equestrian port. of Charles I.) engraved plates, woodcut allegorical representation of Mercury on page 225; woodcut astrological and alchemical symbols on pages 248-60; folding letterpress table. Woodall, John (1570Ð1643), surgeon.ÓIn 1613 Woodall was appointed the first surgeon-general of the East India Company, probably recommended by Sir Thomas Smyth, its governor and his patron. Responsible for selecting surgeons, treating injured workmen at the company's small dockside hospital at Blackwall (Poplar), and supplying ships with surgeons' chests, he published in 1617 The Surgions Mate, or, A Treatise É of the Surgions Chest, the first good medical textbook of its kind in English, chiefly written for young sea surgeons. The instruments and medicines for a surgeon's chest, with their uses, are clearly described, followed by sections on acute surgical problems, potentially lethal medical conditions, a discourse on scurvy, and a treatise about alchemy and chemical medicines. Woodall's is also the earliest comprehensive clinical account of scurvy to prescribe lemon juice for its prevention and cure.Between 1626 and 1628 the BarberÐSurgeons were authorized to supply surgeons' chests for the navy, merchant marine, and the army, which prompted Woodall to publish in 1628 his Viaticum, the Path-Way to the Surgeons Chest; specializing in the treatment of gunshot wounds it was mainly designed to instruct young surgeons with the English troops who attempted to relieve Huguenots blockaded in the Atlantic port of La Rochelle. This short work and Woodall's Treatise É of É the Plague and a Treatise of Gangrene and Sphacelos were incorporated with separate title-pages in a revised and extended edition of The Surgeons Mate, or, Military and Domestique Surgery in 1639. Dedicated to Charles I, it contains an equestrian portrait of the king engraved by William Marshall and a fine plate illustrating Woodall's own invented hand trephine, safely used for cutting holes in skulls for the next three centuries. His detailed description of the amputation of sphacelos, or dead tissue, at the upper limit of established gangrene, enabling him to save more than a hundred lives, was long accepted as a standard work on the subject. A discourse on venereal disease and a dispensatory of medicines, promised in the epilogue to his Surgions Mate in 1617, never materialized. In or before 1612 he had presented the BarberÐSurgeons' Company with a table and a picture of Paracelsus. The Surgions Mate also reflects his keen interest in both theoretical and practical Paracelsian iatrochemistry and chemical medicines. A 78-page section on alchemy, written for novice ship surgeons in the 1617 edition, is expanded in the second with an extra 12-page essay entitled ÔCertain fragments concerning chirurgerie and alchymieÕ, supplemented by an excellent table of alchemical symbols and a glossary of alchemical terms. Elias Ashmole acquired several of Dee's rare manuscript books and papers, found in the secret drawer to a chest belonging to Woodall, who also knew Dee's son Arthur, the alchemical writer.Ò [Oxford DNB.]Young printed the first set of signatures, apparently Legat printed the second and Purslowe the third [see STC.]. Lugd. Batavor. [Leyden], ex officina Elseviriorum [B. & A.Elzevier] 1639. Small 8vo. [LVI],891,[92]p. Contemp. overlapping vellum, spine ends little worn. First (only) edition. The second of three works in which the author defended the taking of interest as an indemnity to the lender. Salmasius (or Claude de Saumaise) was since 1632 successor of the famous Scaliger as professor in Leyden and one of the best known adversaries of scholastic ideas. He was the most important writer in the debate on the taking of interest of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Holland and wrote 3 books on that subject within 3 years: De usuris liber (1638), the present one, and Dissertatio de foenore trapezitico (1640). Laspeyres speaks highly of Salmasius, but Schumpeter thinks that 'so far as the history of economic analysis is concerned ... even the most famous leaders on the anti-scholastic side such as Molinaeus or Salmasius had nothing new to say'. *Willems 488. Printed by B. Alsop & T. Fawcett, and are to be sold by Will Sheares at his shop in Bedford-street in Coven-garden neere the New Exchange. 1639., London: - Printing errors in page numbers (exactly as noted by COPAC): pages 46-47, 53, 117, 128, 133, 136, 205 and 262 incorrectly numbered 44-45, 25, 116, 130, 109, 112, 181 and 226. Text is complete even though pages are mis-numbered. Despite modern connotations of the word "utopia," it is widely accepted that the society More describes in this work was not actually his own "perfect society." Rather he wished to use the contrast between the imaginary land's unusual political ideas and the chaotic politics of his own day as a platform from which to discuss social issues in Europe. Original spine has been rebacked and one of the leather boards has been replaced. (with a leather board) The front board has many pieces chipped off the cover, but is still attractive. Book has 2 stamps of "InnerTemple" on the engraved title page and one small round stamp of "inner Temple on second title page and on Leaf A. The spine also has gilt stamp of same. Front edge of engraved title page is lightly frayed with some small tears and missing a small margin piece, not affection any of the text, Pages are age-toned, but generally clean and very good. RARE, Added , engraved title page; engraved by W. Marshall. Title and text printed with borders. (4) 305 pages. Was bound in full leather with four raised spine bands and gilt spine title. Mappa Æstivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas dictarum...
|
Amsterdam, Jan Jansson, 1639. 400 x 515mm. Coloured. One of the most decorative maps of Bermuda based on the famous survey by Richard Norwood of the Bermuda Company, also known as the Somers Isles Company in 1618. The map shows the division into the original Tribes, a short-lived name for what became administrative parishes, who were the major shareholders in the company. Also shown are the various landowners, with their names in a table below the map. There are many tiny houses shown on the map, locating settlements, as well as minute cannons marking the defensible points. The map is superimposed over a chart of the Atlantic with the coastlines of Britain, North America and Hispaniola showing the location of Bermuda. Decorated with an exquisite strapwork cartouche, a coat of arms, a medallion and a compass rose.

SALLUSTIUS & DEMOPHILUS
Salloustiou philosophou Peri theon kai kosmoi & Demophili, democratis
|
Leiden:: Joannis Maire,, 1639.. FIRST EDITION OF BOTH BOOKS TOGETHER.. Two books in one. 12mo. Text in Greek and Latin on opposite pages. Contemporary calf, a bit worn and stained; an excellent copy, the blank leaves front and back with contemporary annotations. The signature of (Sir John) Aubrey (1626-97), an antiquary and fellow of the Royal Society, with his large armorial bookplate on the front paste down with the motto "Le bon temps viendra." First edition containing both books. They were separately printed the prior year and are not located in the standard bibliographies as bound together before the present date. Sallustius was a Neo-platonic philosopher who flourished in the fourth century. Like his friend, the Emperor Julian, he was a member of the school of Pergamon. The present work, On the gods and the world, is said to have been written for the benefit of the Emperor. The treatise was written by Leo Allatius (1586-1669), Greek scholar, physician, and theologian, with a dedication by Gabriel Naude, French librarian and scholar. Allatius was a voluminous writer who showed an absence of true critical faculty. In one of his essays, he speculated that the Holy Prepuce (foreskin) may have ascended into Heaven at the same time as Jesus himself and might have become the rings of Saturn. Demophilus was bishop of Berea and bishop of Constantinople from 370 until expelled in 380. After his accession he went to Cyzicus to procure the election of an Arian bishop. This treatise was written by Lucas Holstenius (1596-1661), a German humanist, geographer, and theological writer. As the librarian of the Vatican, he became liberal-minded and strenuously opposed the strict censorship of the Index. The thoughts of Democritius, one of his principal works, is considered a little mythological.#11;

Actividad Teatral En La Regia3n De Madrid Segan Los Protocolos De Juan Garca-a De Albertos, 1634-1660: I: Estudio Y Documentos: Introduction and Docum

UK: Tamesis Books. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. In 1639 the Madrid notary Juan Garcia de Albertos was appointedEscribano de la Comision de las comedias-official theatrenotary. His annual registers of contracts (protocolos) containmore than two thousand items related to actors and theatricalactivity from 1634 to 1660. This exceptionally rich collectionof documents offers a fascinating overview of theatrical life, in allits diversity, in Madrid and the surrounding area during the age ofCalderon. Especially plentiful are the contracts for performances atfestivities in towns and villages, both by professional companies andby local amateurs assisted by individual actresses and musicians hiredin Madrid. This extraordinary degree of theatrical activity in even thesmallest communities, almost entirely neglected hitherto, forces us torevise and expand our conventional picture of the Spanish Golden Agetheatre. The collection also reveals in abundant detail the compositionand working practices of acting companies, especially in the numerousasientos (actors' employment contracts), as well as transportconditions, costume hire, staging practices and repertory. The actors'convoluted and often precarious finances are an ever-present theme. The documents are accompanied by appendices and maps, and theextensive introduction provides an exhaustive survey of what can belearned from this remarkable source. CHARLES DAVIS was formerly Lecturer in Spanish at Queen Mary, University of London, and is currently a Ramon y Cajal Research Fellow at the University of Valencia. The late J. E. VAREY was Professor of Spanish at the University of London and Principal of Westfield College. (Spanish blurb see vol. II) ISBN10: 1855660628.

Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Ex officina Joannis Maire, 1639. - 3 works in 1 volume, 4to, pp. (viii), 267, 84, 2 engraved plates; (viii), 104, (8), 4 engraved plates; 51. First title soiled, and some minor soiling elsewhere (mostly in the upper margin), corner of 2 leaves and upper margins of 3 plates carefully restored affecting portion of ruled border of 1 plate only. Contemporary calf, spine and corners neatly repaired, endpapers replaced, bookplate on front pastedown. Preserved in a fine full green morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. [1] Second complete edition of the book that announced the discovery and experimental proof of the circulation of the blood, the most important book in the history of medicine. Harvey?s work fundamentally changed concepts about the heart and blood vessels, leading to a reform of all physiology. This edition has the complete text and illustrations, together with refutations including those of Primerose, who was the first to go into print against Harvey (in 1630). See G&M 759, PMM 127, Dibner 123, Horblit 46, Grolier One Hundred (Medicine) 27A, etc. (the first edition of 1628). Keynes 3.[2] Third edition of the book which announced the discovery of the lacteal vessels, an important milestone in our knowledge of the process of nutrition. See G&M 1094, Lilly, Notable Medical Books, 61, Grolier One Hundred (Medicine) 26, etc. The illustrations are not the large coloured woodcuts, as they appeared only in the first edition, published in 1627.[3] A response by Primerose to the Spongia of Hendrick de Roy, professor of medicine at Utrecht, which defended Harvey?s theory of the circulation. Spongia had in turn been written in response to an attack by Primerose in 1640. Owing to the value and rarity of the first edition, this is the earliest edition of Harvey?s book that most collectors can aspire to own. In 1635 Parisano had published his refutation of Harvey, and included the bulk but not the whole of Harvey?s text in his own book. For the present edition Maire restored the text and illustrations entire, together with Parisano?s refutations, and he took the opportunity, as he says in his note to the reader, to republish another important book, Aselli?s De Lactibus. However, the De Lactibus is not always found bound with the Harvey, as it is here.

|
De integitatis & corruptionis virginum notis: de graviditate & partu naturali mulierum
|
Leiden: Francis Heger & Hack, 1639. Pineau, Severin (d. 1619). De integritatis & corruptionis virginum notis . . . [and 4 other works by Buonaccioli, Platter, Sebitz & Gassendi]. 12mo. [6], 183, 272, [40]pp. 3 engraved plates plus later inserted engraved portrait of Platter, 1 printed table. Lacking engraved title and printed table after p. 134. Leiden: Heger & Hack, 1639. 124 x 72 mm. Old boards, extremely worn, spine lacking, several signatures loose, endpapers detached and chipped. Moderate browning. Former owner's name on front flyleaf. Offered as is. First Collected Edition. See G-M 802. Pineau's De integritatis, originally published in 1597, contains his demonstration of the vestigial foramen ovale in the adult heart, settling the question of the permeability of the septum of the heart. Pineau made it clear that the foramen ovale in the adult heart was an anomaly after Botallo, whose name is associated with the foramen, had originally described it as an anatomical feature in the adult heart generally. Pineau published this study in a frank treatise on virginity and the ways of losing it. Among the other works in this collection is a later version of G-M 1721, Sebitz's De notis virginitatis (1630), on the legal determination of virginity.
