Blaeu, Willem Janszoon (Guiljelmus Bleau), 1571-1638
Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus, c. 1640
A fine Copper plate map in early color by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (Guiljelmus Bleau) depicting the West Indies, Gulf of Mexico, Central America and the northern extremities of South America. The map spans as far south as the River Orinoco (Guyana) and as far north as the Chesapeake Bay. It is richly adorned with fine cartouches, coats of arms, sea galleons, rhumb lines and several compass roses. In this example, Blaeu draws extensively from the rare chart by Hessel Gerritsz (1631), the primary differences being the addition of the west (Pacific) coast of Central America and the naming of Virginia. SCRIBONIUS Wilhelm Adolf; WIDDOWES Daniel translator
Naturall philosophy or A description of the world and of the severall creatures therein contained viz. of angels of mankinde of the heavens the starres the planets the foure elements with their order nature and government as also of minerals mettals plants and precious stones with their colours formes and vertues ... The second edition corrected and enlarged
London: Printed by Tho. Cotes and sold by Beniamine Allen. 1631. 18th century marbled boards rebacked in calf. Small 4to . Second edition in English of this translation and abridgment of a natural history (Rerum naturalium doctrina methodica: 1577) by the German writer Wilhelm Adolf Scribonius (fl. 1576-1583). The translator was Daniel Widdowes with the epistle dedicatory signed by I. Wyddowes, alias Woodhouse. The author takes very broad approach to the world for a relatively short work but does give fascinating information on a variety of subjects in eight chapters. He begins with a short account of philosophy, God and angels, etc.; chapter two deals with the senses "Of motions, qualities, colours, tasting, etc."; astronomy in chapter three "Of the Celestial bodies, as the Heavens, the Firmament, the Starres, with their places, order and government."; chapter three "Of the Four Elements"; chapter five "Of mixed living Natures"; chapter six "Of Minerals and Mettals" is by far the longest and includes descriptions of precious stones, chemistry, loadstones, etc.; chapter seven "On natures perfectly living" dealing with plants (fruits, vegetables, spices, trees, etc.); chapter eight "Of human creatures" describes the physical senses, perception, the human body, disease, etc. As noted the section on Minerals and Metals is particularly long and must have been of special interest to the translator however it has been overlooked by the relevant literate on chemistry and gems (including Sinkankas) [14], 65 pp. Some light browning and foxing, inner blank margin of title-page reinforced. § STC 22112; Krivatsy 10744 (STC 22112.5 issue)

Lucius Apuleius Apulee
Les Metamorphoses ou LAsne Dor
1631. Paris. Samuel Thiboust. In 8vo. Very nice later yellow morocco gilt “citron, grain long”, in the style of Derome, spine lettered in gilt, with raised bands, boards with gilt fillet and a crown over an eagle´s head on boards, fore edge gilt, very attractive binding, slightly rubbed. Paper lightly browned, specially the plates, else a fresh copy. A remarkable copy of a beautiful edition of this classic. Illustrated with 16 full page plates, some signed by Crispin de Passe and J. Briot; engraved vignettes and initials. Translation and preface by J. Montlyard. The author (Apuleius in Latin) was born in Madaura (Argelia) and is often called Lucius Apuleius, although the praenomen Lucuis is taken from one of his works. Probably one of the most important Roman prose writers, this is the only Latin novel that survived entirely; in the work, the main character –Lucius-, experiments with magic until he accidentally turns himself into an ass. As an ass, the is witness to amusing scenes only to later be rid off his predicament in an unexpected way. At the end, he wants to be initiated into the mistery of Isis, given place to a series of steps needed to be part of the cult. The work integrates comedy, fiction and mythology. Brunet, I, 364.

London, printed by I. N. for Hugh Perry, 1631.. description of all those kingdomes, cities, and people: as also, a relation of their commodities and manner of traffique, and at what seasons of the yeere they are most in use. Faythfully related: with a discovery of a great emperour called the Great Mogoll, a prince not till now knowne to our English nation. Third edition, London, printed by I. N. for Hugh Perry, 1631. Slim 4to, 180x 140 mm, 7 x 5½ inches, printed in black letter, pages (2 of 8), 68, (2 of 4), initial and final blank leaves are missing as are 2 preliminary leaves (Dedication? To the Reader?) which should follow the title page, the text is complete. Collation: A-K4 (-A1, A2 & A3 and K4). The colophon is present on K3. The title page appears to be a printed replacement (it is not a photocopy facsimile) as it is tipped onto the inner edge of page 1 and the mistake "Traffiqne" which appears on the title pages of all the 1631 editions we could find, has been corrected to "Traffique". Bound in 18th century half green roan over marbled boards, gilt title to spine. Spine rubbed, corners and board edges slightly worn, small scrape to surface paper on lower cover, some pencil notes on front pastedown, 3 armorial bookplates on endpapers, 1 belonging to Frances Mary Richardson Currer and another to her grandfather Mathew Wilson, title page just very slightly narrower than page 1, upper margins slightly trimmed, shaving running title in a few places, small light brown stain to lower corner of 4 leaves, light browning to a few pages. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce book, (lacking 2 preliminary leaves as noted). There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captaine Robert Covert, It seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in 1612 and again in 1614. Howgego, Encyclopedia of Exploration, Volume I, C211; Cox, Volume I, page 266. Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) was a well-known bibliophile and scholar, and had one of the largest libraries in the north of England. She was one of the founders of the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge which Charlotte and Emily Bronte both attended and her surname is undoubtedly the source of Charlotte's pseudonym, 'Currer Bell'.

More Crescare
D. O. M. S. The Life And Death Of Sir Thomas Moore Lord high Chancellour of England
[Douai:]: [Balthazar Bellire,], [1631?]. 19th c. mottled calf, gilt rule on covers, spine banded, extra-gilt, title gilt on label, bookplate of "The Knights of Morar,"old owner's note on t.p. dated March 1660 but name crossed out; some finger soiling, occ. minor stains, wide margins.. Head- and tail-pieces, decorated intials.. 4to.. First Edition. More, (Christopher) Cresacre (1572Ð1649), biographer. "More's The Life and Death of Sir Thomas Moore was written between about 1616 and 1620 and published undated at Douai between about 1626 and 1631. Formerly it was attributed to Cresacre's older brother Thomas, a secular priest, who died in Rome in 1625, making Cresacre his heir. The issue of authorship arises from discrepancies between the ÔEpistle DedicatoryÕ and the ÔPreface to the readerÕ in the first edition. The ÔEpistleÕ clearly ascribes the authorship to Thomas, referring to him in the third person and as deceased. The ÔPrefaceÕ just as clearly refers to the author as the youngest of thirteen children, as baptized on the anniversary of Sir Thomas More's death, as a parent, and as the only one of his brothers not to be in a religious estate. Conceivably Cresacre revised a biography first written by his brother but there is no acknowledgement of this possibility in the ÔPrefaceÕ. It is likely that the ÔEpistleÕ was added at a late stage, quite probably, in view of More's vulnerable position as a recusant, in an attempt to obscure his responsibility for the work. The dedication of the Life to Queen Henrietta Maria, whose marriage negotiations Thomas furthered, could also have rendered the illusion of double authorship desirable.& & More's biography of his great-grandfather is largely derivative, drawn mainly from the lives of William Roper and of Thomas Stapleton, but also using materials from Nicholas Harpsfield's life and from Edward Hall and John Stow's historical accounts. His chief accomplishment is to present a fully rounded portrait of his ancestor, in which he deftly combines the personal emphasis of Roper's biography, with its cameos of wit and family life, and the internationalist emphasis of Stapleton's, which depicts Sir Thomas the European humanist, man of letters, statesman, and martyr for the universal Catholic church. From a literary point of view his achievement is considerable." [Oxford DNB] STC 18066. Gibson, More, 106. Allison & Rogers 548. ESTC s112843.

SCRIBONIUS Wilhelm Adolf; WIDDOWES Daniel translator

London printed by I. N. for Hugh Perry 1631 - description of all those kingdomes, cities, and people: as also, a relation of their commodities and manner of traffique, and at what seasons of the yeere they are most in use.
Bel exemplaire. First edition. A very rare treaty of astronomy, quoting Copernic and Tycho Brahé, written by a royal engineer and cartographer from Normandy. All disease, starting from a certain point, proceeds either in one direction or in another... The 'Catholic' disease springs from the sin of man, and is a plague which is sent to evil hearts by Jehovah through evil angels...the essence of disease is corruption by sin....Disease is either acute or chronic, and is undoubtedly affected by the influence of the planets...A large portion of the work treats of the stellary influence on health and disease...The effects of the moon are laid down in certain definite canons. The divine science of numbers is also explained in regard to its relation to disease, and the thirty days of the month have each their influence on the progress of disease..A very large portion of the Catoptron is taken up with a treatise 'De Nomandia, sive Oypomantia'--that is, 'divination' 'per urinam.' The four 'conflexions' are explained in their relation to sickness." 'The tract [Pulsus] is divided into five parts: 1. The radical mystery of the pulse is opened up. 2. Contains the essential definition of the pulse, both from sacred writ and the opinions of Ethnic doctors. 3, The mutiform difference in the method and progression of the pulse. 4. The different species of pulse, distinguished both by the sacred authority and by ocular demonstration. 5. How the pulse demonstrates the presence of disease.       Oxford:: William T[urner] for William Webb, 1631. 12mo. [π 4 of 6], A-L12, M6. [8 of 12], 274, [2]p. Full modern pebble grained calf, blind tooled ruling. Banded spine, black morocco label with title in gilt lettering. Brown speckled edges. Side edges occasionally trimmed close, slightly effecting margin notes. Falconer Madan's copy with his stamp on π 2. Engraved initial, head and tail pieces. Vincent (d. ca. 450), a semi-Pelagian monk on the island of Lérins, was opposed to the position of Augustine of Hippo. In order to provide a guide for the determination of the true Catholic faith, he wrote the present work, which despite an emphasis on tradition asserts the final ground of Christian truth as Scripture; the authority of the Church was only to serve as a guarantee to the Scriptures' correct interpretation. Furthermore, what development did occur in doctrinal matters was to come only through a more thoroughly explicated reading of the Scriptures. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), doctor of the western Church and one of the most frequently read and esteemed ecclesiastical authors of late antiquity, established the position that humankind lost free will in Paradise when Adam and Eve chose to be separated from God, and so, by this act of defiance, necessitated grace as a requirement for salvation. His position on Predestination, although unique and never quite fully accepted by the Roman church, predated that of Jean Calvin by more than a millennium. STC 24749. ESTC s119136. Madan I, 159.

SCRIBONIUS Wilhelm Adolf; WIDDOWES Daniel translator
Naturall philosophy or A description of the world and of the severall creatures therein contained viz. of angels of mankinde of the heavens the starres the planets the foure elements with their order nature and government as also of minerals m

CHENG, Ji.
CRAFT OF GARDENS.
THE FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE 1631 YUAN YE New Haven 1988, Yale. Green cloth, very good, dj., 144p., notes, chronology, appendix, 118 color & b.w. photos, 162 designs of balustrade [lattice], window patterns, pillar structures, &c. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. O B S C U R E Translated by Alison Hardie, with a foreword by Maggie Kes- wick. Ji Cheng's great work on garden design the YUAN YE or CRAFT OF GARDENS was originally published in or around 1631 & is the earliest manual of landscape gardening in the Chin- ese tradition. This is the first complete English translat- ion of his seminal work. The book is based on Ji's notes and experiences from his career as a garden designer, which he discusses at length in his introduction. Since architecture is an integral part of the Chinese garden, much of the book is taken up with the design of different types of buildings & the integration of architecture with nature in the garden. Ji explains the religious & aesthietic principles underlying garden design & the appropriate emotional response to vari- ous effects. He then offers a down-to-earth series of instr- uctions about his requirements of different types of sites, building layouts, architectural features, paving, the const- ruction of artifical mountains, selection of rocks and the use of natural scenery.

BILLICH Anton Gnther
Observationum ac Paradoxorum chymiatricorum Libri Duo Quorum Unus medicamentorum Chymicorum praeparatione Alter eorundem usum succincte perspicuèque explicat
Finely engraved title. 4 p.l. (incl. engraved title), 11-173, [1] pp. Small 4to, cont. vellum over boards. Leyden: J. Maire, 1631. First edition of a rather scarce book. Billich (1598-1640), the son-in-law of Angelo Sala and private physician to the Count of Oldenburg, was one of the earliest chemists to challenge the then-prevalent Paracelsian doctrines. “Continuing the attack on the Paracelsian tria prima, which he had begun in his De Tribus Chymicorum Principiis (Bremen, 1621), Billich here presents a number of chemical paradoxes and rejects the tria prima altogether. He criticizes the arrangement of chapters two to five in the first book of Jean Beguin’s Tyrocinium Chymicum. In addition to Beguin, Billich also criticizes the various iatrochemical preparations described in the works of Croll, Du Chesne (Quercetanus), Paracelsus, and other chemists. The book contains numerous descriptions of pharmaceutical chemical preparations, from animals, vegetables, and minerals, with their supposed physiological actions on man. Rare.”–Neville, I, p. 153. Fine copy. Title with tiny tear at foot, not touching image. ❧ Duveen, p. 78. Ferchl, p. 46. Ferguson, I, p. 107. Partington, II, p. 280-81–“a good chemist.” .

Merian Matheus printer Based on Earlier Work of Theodore De Bry
Leaf with Illustration Plate hand colored from NEWE WELT UND AMERICANISCHE HISTORIEN
Frankfurt: Frankfurt: Circa 1631, 1631. Attribution tag that comes with this leaf identifies it as being from the very scarce 1631 edition of "The Newe Welt und Americanische Historien," authored by Johann Ludwig Gottfried. The work as a whole was a compilation of the various voyages published by Theodore de Bry in the late 1500's and earlier 1600's. Matheus (or Matthias) Merian, the printer of this work, was a son-in-law of de Bry's and so had access to the original plates used by de Bry to illustrate his earlier books on the voyages of discovery. The illustration plate at the bottom half of this leaf was nicely hand colored at an undetermined time in the past. It is an interesting scene showing a troop of Spanish soldiers coming upon an Indian village. There are five native houses shown in the print and in one of them are four nude females huddled together. In the background a contingent of warriors is coming up as if to meet the Spaniards in battle. In the distance offshore is a galleon being fired upon with bows and arrows by the Indians. Plate is 5 3/4 inches high by nearly 7 inches wide. The coloring is expertly done and the image bright and relatively clean. Above the plate is text in German and the other side of the leaf is completely German text. Leaf size is 8 by 13 1/2 inches. The leaf shows considerable age toning and the German script is a very old fashioned looking one. Both text and image very well printed. Page number 224 at upper left corner of the page with the plate. The paper of the leaf is showing signs of its advanced age and the leaf is in a heavy clear plastic holder to make the presentation attractive and to protect the leaf from deterioration. The leaf can be removed if desired. I am unable to verify that the attribution on the previous ownership tag is accurate, but it seems very likely. All the early editions with de Bry plates are very scarce and researching any one plate as to what edition it came from is very time consuming. A great study piece for its future owner, or simply a very attractive example of an early illustration of the New World. A few brown age spots in the blank margins do not detract from the attractiveness. . Disbound. Very Good. Illus. by Vintage Illustration Plate from an Earlier Work By De Bry Showing an Indian Village and Spanish Conquistadors.. Folio Leaf. "Matthaus Merian, Matheus Merian, Theodor De Bry, Grand Voyages, discovery of America, Native Americans, De Bry Print".
