Schouten, W.C.
Journal ou relation...voyage de Guill. Schouten
|
Paris, Gobert 1618. (Sabin 77952; Leclerc 1990; not in Tiele; JCB 618/119). In small octavo, full contemporary calf. a 7; A 4; B-P in 8 = 115 leaves; 8 folding maps & plates, plates in old colour. Complete as in Sabin. This little booklet which is complete and in its original binding has been illustrated by an early owner who drew geometrical figures on unprinted leaves, at the end and start of some parts of the book, and in verso of the worldmap. That same person coloured these geometrical figures in three basic colours. The booklet thus became a very personal copy. The plates are in old, possibly contemporary colour, the maps are in black & white. The text leaves are in excellent condition.* "This is mainly a reprint of the Amsterdam French edition of 1618, but with many alterations and improvements in the text" (Sabin). The maps and plates are close copies of those of the first edition but slightly smaller and the views are in reverse. Thus the initial worldmap lacks additional inscriptions like Tropicus Cancri etc as happened only in the very first printed books of the first edition. Both le Maire and Schouten, who split up during the voyage, claimed the discovery. Both wrote their own journal. Schouten was the first to publish his version of the circumnavigation (this book, 1618) while le Maire, who died on the way back home after having been imprisoned in Batavia for breaching the VOC monopoly on sailing through the Street of Magelaans, had his story first published in 1622 (see our copy of the Herrera, 1622). Sabin states that Schoutens journal was quite certainly not written by Schouten but composed by Blaeu from different log books of the journal especially the one of the commissary Arie Claeszoon. #[547]

HUES, Robert
|
Michel Daniel, Paris 1618 - 18th century green vellum with gilt spine with early 18th century engraved book plate ("C. Charles in. J.C. Fran scul Nanceii, 1739") 8vo . First edition of the first translation into French of Robert Hues Tractatus de Globis, originally published in London in 1594 (in Latin). The first translation into English was not published until 1639. This important early text dealing with the use of geographical and astronomical globes was translated and edited by the French mathematician D. Henrion, during the lifetime of Hues. Henrion has added his own notes on the use of the compass of proportion. The English geographer Robert Hues (1554-1632) circumnavigated the world with Cavendish and Emery Molyneux, whose globes form the basis this work. Molyneux's large terrestrial globe was the first to be made in England and was "corrected and reformed according to the newest, secretest and latest discoveries, both Spanish, Portuguese and English" (Hakluyt). The most important and innovative part of this treatise is the chapter dealing with rhumbs. Rhumbs were not properly understood and used at the time, though Mercator had used them previously on his globes. This part of Hues treatise contains a great deal of new and valuable information and emphasizes the significance of rhumbs in navigation as well as their use on globes for resolving navigational problems. "Because of . Hues combined mastery of the practice as well as of the theory of navigation, his treatise is of particular interest. It was in the fifth and last part of his Tractatus that he introduced something quite new, a detailed explanation 'of the Rombes that are described in the Terrestrial globe and their use'. Hues, in a short but brilliantly lucid treatise, discussed first the general characteristics and significance of rhumb lines in navigation, and then their particular use when represented on a globe, in the solution of various navigational problems. "Hue's Tractatus de Globis remained the standard work on globes for nearly a century." (Waters, The Art of Navigation in England, pp. 192-94) [4] leaves, 184 pp. Ownership signature neatly erased from title page and light waterstain to the lower right corner of the first three leaves. Generally very good. § Alden-Landis, European Americana, 618/59; Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners, p. 178 (no. 47) & p. 332. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Wikipedia)

Visconti, Giuseppe
Iosephi Vicecomitis Ambrosiani collegii doctoris Observationes ecclesiasticae in quo de antiquis baptismi ritibus, ac caeremoniis agitur
|
Parisiis: Apud Laurentium Sonnium, 1618. Later quarter mottled calf and speckled papercovered sides, spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather title-label, rebacked preserving most of original spine; edges and extremities rubbed, spine with area of discoloration from now-absent shelving label, original spine leather chipped and cracked. Title-page with institutional rubber-stamps, numeral, and pressure-stamp; one additional page pressure-stamped. Pages age-toned with occasional light spotting and title-page dust-soiled; one spot of pinhole worming to first quarter of volume, not touching text. Early inked inscription on title-page inked over, one instance of early inked underlining. Sound and handsome.. 8vo (18.5 cm, 7.25"). [6], 912, [70 (index)] pp.. Second edition: Important study of the development of canon law on baptism. A historian and antiquarian, the author was one of the earliest members of the college of doctors associated with the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, the historic Milan library established in 1609; he was invited to join the college by the library's founder, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who tasked him with studying ecclesiastical rites. The first edition of 1615 is scarce, as is this second edition, of which at least two variant issues appeared in 1618. All have the same pagination but attribute their publication to Droüart, Cramoisy, or (as in this case) Laurent Sonnius; presumably at least one of the title-pages is a cancel. All are uncommon: OCLC locates only two U.S. institutional holdings of this Sonnius printing. The work bears a woodcut title vignette, headpieces, and initials, with copious printed shouldernotes to the text.

Abraham van Laren (the 1st, 2nd and 4th work), Utrecht H. Versteegh (the 3rd work), 16571659, Vlissinghe, - 4 works in 1 vol. Sm. 8vo. Contemp. vellum. With woodcut vignette on the titles of the 1st, 2nd and 4th work, and woodcut printer's device on the 2 titles of the 3rd work. (16), 270; (4), 74; (8), 118; (16), 392, (8) pp. Dutch translations of three sermons and a catechism by Christopher Love, a puritan minister at St. Ann's, Aldersgate, and St. Lawrence, Jewry in London (1618-1651). The first 2 sermons and the catechism, to which the obituary sermon by Thomas Manton is added, are in first editions, and the last sermon, "Het Cabinet", is in second edition. Love had been the first to refuse subscription to Laud's new canons of 1640, and declined episcopal ordination. He was jailed twice, but acquited. During the Civil War he was chaplain to Colonel Venn's regiment, and only when the Presbyterian system was established in England he finally was ordained. As a zealous Presbyterian he soon found himself in trouble with the Independents, and in 1651 he was thrown into the Tower, accused of high treason, the so-called "Love's plot", and tried and sentenced to death. He was executed on August 22, 1651. A reprieve from Cromwell was said to have been intercepted and destroyed by incensed Royalists. A large number of Love's works and sermons were published after his death by the executors of his will: Edmund Calamy, Simeon Ashe, Jeremiah Whitaker, William Taylor, and Allan Geare. The present Dutch translation of several of these posthumous works is rare. Abraham Laren, who translated 2 and published 3 of the present works in Dutch was an orthodox minister, and also a bookseller and publisher at Zeeland, born in 1633. In his opposition against the Remonstrant or "Voetian" ministers, he translated and published several English Puritanical works into Dutch. Good copy.- (Binding browned; loose in spine). STEIJNDERS, Christiaan (ca. 1800)
Het Afdanken der Waardgelders, te Utrecht, door Prins Mauerits [sic]. Naar de Origineelen Schilderij [door] Christiaan Steijnders.
|
The beginning of a coup d'état: Prince Maurits disbanding the mercenaries of Utrecht on the Neude, 31 July 1618 200 x 338 mm. (black ink framing line). Drawing in pen and brown ink finished as gouache and heightened with white, mounted on later paper with the original title-strip (cut from lower margin of the drawing) laid down on verso. Nice, rather naive copy probably after the historical print by Daniel Vrijdag, engraved in 1793, after a drawing by Jan Bulthuis which was in turn a copy after one of the now at least 12 known versions of the well-known painting by the Utrecht painter Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot (1586-1666), an eye-witness of this famous moment in the Dutch history of the Golden age.The disbanding, or dissolution of the 'Waardgelders' (mercenaries) at Utrecht on 31 July 1618 by the stadholder Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau was the starting point of a 'coup d'état' by Maurits to establish his full power in the young Republic - authorized by the States General - against the States of Holland and Utrecht, ultimately leading to the death penalty for Johan van Oldenbarneveld who was decapitated in The Hague in May of the following year, and the imprisonment of Hugo de Groot at Loevestein. The event was also decisive for the very difficult religious relations between the Remonstrants, including the States of Holland and Utrecht and the magistrates in the main cities, and the Contra-Remonstrants, including Maurits, the States General and the orthodox ministers. The victory of the latter faction was confirmed at the Synod of Dordrecht in the next year. This view on the Neude at Utrecht is from the West, with the St. Caecilia monastery at the left, behind the guardhouse of the 'waardgelders'. In the foreground the Utrecht magistrates welcome Prince Maurits, Count Ernst Casimir of Nassau-Dietz and other members of Maurits' staff, all on horseback. This view on the Neude at Utrecht is from the West, with the St. Caecilia monastery at the left, behind the guardhouse of the 'waardgelders'. On the title-page Sprigg describes his work as Ôcompiled for the public good.Õ It is throughout based on the pamphlets and newspapers of the period, and contains very little information which can be regarded as embodying the author's own recollections; at the same time it is a very judicious and accurate compilation. Clement Walker asserts that Sprigg was not its real author, referring to ÔSprigg alias Nathaniel Fiennes in his legend or romance of this army called Anglia RedivivaÕ (History of Independency, i. 32); but his assumption is not supported by any evidence. It is probably based on the fact that ÔAnglia RedivivaÕ justifies the conduct of Fiennes in surrendering Bristol in 1643." DNB Wing S5070. ESTC r18123. Abbott 197 "valuable." Davies/Keeler 1579. Nova Virginiae Tabula
|
Nice example of Henricus Hondius' map of Virginia, Maryland and the Chesapeake region. This map isthe first state of Henricus Hondius' rare separately issued map, drawn from his deceased brother Jodocus' version of 1618. The two brothers led separate careers for at least ten years prior to the death of Jodocus in 1629, at which time Henricus was forced to comission his own plate of the map as Willem Blaeu acquired a number of Jodocus' plates from the estate. The map depicts the discoveries in the region detailed by Captain John Smith in his map of 1612. Smith's map is the basis for Hondius' work and was by far the most important map of Virginia published in the first part of the 17th Century. First issued in 1612, it became the prototype map of the region until Augustine Hermann's map of 1673. Smith’s map was first issued separately in London. Later, it was used to illustrate a number of rare works on Virginia (like this Hondius example) and was instrumental in creating interest in the new Virginia Colony. The map includes images of an Indian figure and Powhatan’s lodge based on John White’s drawings made during the first attempt to form a colony in Virginia. The Hondius first state Virgina is one of the most detailed maps of the Chesapeake region to date and is an essential map for collectors of this region. London: Printed for John Marriott… 1618. Small folio, 16 leaves, 210 pages, 3 leaves. Including thefine engraved title by Renold Elstracke, woodcut ornaments. Contemporary calf, spine neatly repaired, several cuts and small holes in the leather. Neat repair to blank upper margin of title and fore-edge a little ragged, rather soiled throughout, especially the endpapers, but a perfectly complete copy in its original binding. Several 17th century signatures of the Wynter family on endpapers; Morgan Jones dated 14th January 1663; Charles Wynstone (on p. 15); Gregory Griffiths, 1701; also (on the dedication) Lewis Williams, 1733. Second edition of the first London pharmacopoeia, the first pharmacopoeia intended for use by an entire nation. "There were at the time official European pharmacopoeias, but these were enforced only for comparatively small territories. The College's product was intended to be standard not only for the London area but for all England and it was declared obligatory by the King. Representatives of medicine and pharmacy in Western Europe awaited its production with much interest…" (William Brocklebank, "Sovereign Remedies. A critical depreciation of the 17th-century London pharmacopoeia", in Medical History, pp. 1-14, January 1964). Even though the College of Physicians began work on the pharmacopeia in 1589, the first edition, when it finally appeared, had numerous errors and was withdrawn. This second edition, brought out later in the same year, was corrected and had some 90 more pages, including a catalogue of simples and an index. It was even given a new engraved title, presumably to distinguish it clearly from the first. STC 16773. All editions of the first London pharmacopoeia are extremely rare; STC records 6 copies of this edition, fewer than any other. See G&M 1821, the first edition. Hind, Engraving in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, 1955, vol. 2, p. 205, no. 84 (the present engraved title, used for all further editions up to the fifth in 1639). Elstracke was one of the earliest native engravers in England, and the foremost English engraver of his time.

MEURSIUS, IOANNIS.
A classic on classical ballet and dancing Orchestra. Sive, De Saltationibus Veterum, Liber Singularis.
|
Leyden, Ex Off. Godefridus Basson, 1618.. Small 4to. 18th century red morocco, spine inlaid with green morocco, gilt, with gilt triple fillet borders on sides, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. With woodcut printer's vignette comprising an open music book on title. (8), 111, (1 blank) pp.. Rare first edition of a fine humanist school book, collecting all references to dancing from over one hundred Greek and Latin authors, by the great Dutch linguist and historian Johannes van Meurs (1579-1639). Van Meurs was the most gifted Dutch humanist of the first generation, translating and commenting upon a large number of classical texts, many of them published by Govert Basson (ca. 1581-1643), who also printed for the Elzeviers at Leyden. For ten years Van Meurs was private tutor to Johan van Oldebarneveld's children, and in 1610 he became professor at Leyden and official historian for the Dutch States. After the death of Oldebarneveld and the defeat of the Remonstrant's faction, Van Meurs felt his popularity at Leyden waning, but he held on until in 1625 Christian IV of Denmark invited him to the University of Soroe and also appointed him to his official historian. Van Meurs's reference book on ballet and dancing in classical times is a real classic in its field. Fine copy of a rare work.- (Old owner's ms. entry on title). A. Philippon ex.', and it is plausible that this plate has been issued as the fourth plate of this series. Adam Philippon (1606- after 1645(!)) is the master of Jean Le Pautre.2. (First state, c.1658-70). Complete series of 6 plates 223-6x152-6 mm) of tabernacles for the embellishment of altars. Fuhring describes the series in the RM, Amsterdam as 'five plates from the Flemish reversed copies by Corn. Galle of [our series]' (nrs. 9469-73). The sixth plate, however he describes as nr. 9494.3. (ff. 16-21): Jean Le Pautre. Complete series of six plates with Altars with plan (185-210x120-35 mm), published by Jean I Le Blond, with inscriptions 'Le Blond Avec Privilege': (1) Altar in the shape of a triumphal arch with composite columns, with an attic on the main entablature, with plan (Fuhring 9505), (2) Altar under a baldachin supported by four twisted Corinthian columns. Elevation and plan (Fuhring 9507), (3) Altar in the shape of a triumphal arch, in the middle a second story surmounted by a tympanum, Elevation and plan (Fuhring 9506), (4) Altar with a painting of the Annunciation. Elevation and plan (Fuhring 9503).4. (Paris, Pierre II Mariette, before 1667). Complete series of 6 numbered plates (including the title; 147-54x221-9 mm) with armorial trophies in the classical and modern manner. 5. (ff. 28-33): Jean Le Pautre, Chimney-pieces in the modern manner. Complete series of 6 unnumbered etched plates, including title (213-17x151-4 mm). Paris, Jean Leblond, c.1655. Fuhring described incomplete series of later editions, a.o. by Mariette, 1661: f. 28 = Fuhring 9334, 29: not in Fuhring, 30 = F 9336, 31 = F. 9335, 32 = f. 9337, 33 = 9339. 6. Complete series of 6 numbered plates (207-10x145 mm ) with ornamental panels and doors for rooms and alcoves. Plate 1, cf. Furing 9430 (with illustr.), 2 = Fuhring 9435, 3 = 9432, 4 = 9433, 5 = 9434 and 6 = 9431.7. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

KEPLER, Johann
Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae
|
Frankfurt: J. G. Schonwetter, 1618. First book only (of 3). 3 parts in 1. 8vo. . Contemporary vellum, text browned as usual due to the quality of the paper, a couple of paper tears with no loss of letters, generally a good copy but lacking four index leaves. From the library of the eighteenth century savant Gueneau, with his autograph, and Owen Gingerich with his bookplate. First edition of the first part of Kepler's great classic astronomical text book based on the laws of Copernicus. This first part represents a front-line defense of the Copernican system, and the arguments with which Kepler defends the movement of the earth according to this theory are entirely new in concept. His position for the relativity of motion carried him considerably further beyond Copernicus and formulated principles later given more detailed treatment in Galileo's Dialogo. Because of these arguments, part one (as above) was placed on the Index liborum prohibitorum in 1619. The remaining books did not appear until 1621 and 1622.Provenance: Guéneau de Montbeillard (1720-1785) was a French naturalist and Buffon's main collaborator and ghostwriter for his Natural History, especially for the text on birds. In addition, he is well known for the origins of the science of anthropometry and human growth by his famous series of measurements conducted on his son, and in addition, for his articles for the French Englightement Journal Collection Académique, which he wrote on different scientific societies.

It was updated periodically, the final edition appearing in 1625. "It is partly of the nature of an edition of the Statutes at large, as the enacting parts of the public statutes in force are printed nearly word for word, and in their original language. But it is more of the nature of an abridgment. The book was frequently republished and brought up to date in successive editions and in 1579 the Latin and French Statute were translated. SELDEN (John)
The Historie of Tithes That is, The Practice of Payment of them. The Positiue Laws made for them. The Opinions touching the Right of them. A Review of it is also annext, which both Confirmes it and directs it in the Vse of it. By I. Selden.
|
[London: [s.n.], M.DC.XV111, [1618]. - First Edition, third variant, small 4to, title page in red and black, in this edition p.249 is misnumbered 149 and line 1 has "little"; [6], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp., contemporary calf, rebacked, red morocco label, a good clean copy with wide margins. "The most celebrated of Selden's treatises from this decade, 'The Historie of Tithes' (1618), marked a major refinement in his theory and practice of history. Dedicated to Sir Robert Cotton, it praised his 'inestimable Library', which assured 'a curious Diligence in search after the inmost, least known and most usefull parts of Historicall Truth'. The preface recommended the scrutinizing of earlier interpretations and of all evidence with a searching, but moderate philosophical scepticism, which helped to clear away unsound interpretations and to promote soundly based truth. A 'Review' at the end of the 'Historie of Tithes' provided a brief history of the Roman law to show how it could not rightly claim to have ruled even western Europe in an unbroken sequence and pictured William I, his barons, and those 'learned in the laws' (identified as 'the common Lawiers of that time, as Godric and Alfwin') gathering together as a parliament in the fourth year of the conquest to hear and confirm the 'former Laws of the Kingdome'. This vivid image of the historical triumph of the king-in-parliament appeared just in time for Selden's political career of the following decade. King James and his favourite, the marquess of Buckingham, forced Selden to withdraw Historie of Tithes from circulation, apologize to the privy council for the mistake of its publication, and endure in silence the attacks on it made by his critics. However, he would neither admit that it presented false evidence or interpretations nor retreat from the central thesis that the law of God found enforcement only in the laws of particular jurisdictions." - Oxford DNB. 1618 - 1637 New Testament, Bishops Version and King James Version (Mixed Copy)
|
Bonham Norton & John Bill,, London 1618 - Title: New Testament, Bishops Version and King James Version (Mixed Copy) Publisher: Bonham Norton & John Bill, London Year: 1618/1637 Size: Small personal copy, approximately 6" tall and 2 1/2" thick. Considered small octavo in size. Edition & Contents: Very unusual hybrid copy, made up at an early date, in which portions missing from a 1618 Norton and Bill edition of the Bishops' New Testament (identified from the colophon) have been supplied from an unidentified early octavo black letter King James edition. The King James sections are Matthew 24:27-Mark 2:22, Mark 10:43-14:47, and John 2:23-Revelation 10:9. Bound with unidentified edition of The Book of Common Prayer, missing the title and a number of other leaves, with some supplied from another edition; and 1637 Company of Stationers edition of the Sternhold/Hopkins metrical Psalms in single-column black letter with letterpress music (A-X8), with title bound before Book of Common Prayer, lacking last 2 leaves. No endpaper. Leather cover wraps around inside of cover, no fixed endpaper covering this. Stitches visible on inside front cover. No front free endpaper. Psalmes title has decorative border. Contents: Opens with "The Whole Booke of Psalmes. Collected into English Meetre by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others: conferred with the Hebrew, with apt notes to sing them withall. Set forth and allowed to bee [sic] sung in all Churches of all the people together before and after Morning and Evening prayer, and also before and after Sermons, and moreover, in private houses, for their godly solace and comfort, laying apart all ungodly songs and ballads, which tend only to the nourishing of vice and the corrupting of youth. Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1637." No general titles, but this copy also includes Bishops and King James Versions of the New Testament merged as one, followed by the Book of Common Prayer. Following the NT are some notations and tables. Following this is a notation "Imprinted at London by Bonham Norton and John Bill, Deputie Printers for the Kings most excellent Maiestie, 1618." Followed by "A Treatise made by Anthanasius the Great, concerning the use and virtue of the Psalmes. Metrical Psalms and readings follow, nearly complete to the Table (index) of this portion. Description: Most of the single column text Testaments were read out of existence, probably explaining why this copy is a merged form. This copy includes a Whole Booke of Psalmes, New Testament (merged) and Metrical Psalms. The two New Testaments, issued in the same size and similar single-column blackletter layout, appear to have been merged from very early on in their existence, probably even the 1600s. No recorded reason exists. The Testament opens with The Whole Booke of Psalmes (Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins), which is dated 1637. No general title exists anywhere for either version. At each merge point, a few verses of text are missing. Roman type occurs in all footnotes, prefatory notes, marginal notes, and headers. Apparently the King James Version portions have more extensive prefatory notes. Condition: Fair condition overall. At some pointmost likely the 1600sthe two versions were merged to make one complete New Testament. Binding: Full-leather, still bound in its original (apparently post-merger) contemporary calf. Spine worn and damaged; front edge of cover worn through. Internal crack in text block but all still holding, if only by a few threads in some places. Back inside cover same as front. Small jab into edge of back cover. Leather peeling back from spine, torn in one spot. Leather also cracked at back joint. Evidently formerly had clasps. Front cover very worn at page side edge, leather peeling back. Some small wormholes (?) to covers. Pages: No general title page. Contents partly loose, with some soiling and staining, soiled and dampstained with scattered marginal scrawls, couple of leaves torn with text loss, lacks the title and several other leaves fr [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Milton, Anthony
The British Delegation and the Synod of Dort (1618-19)
|
Boydell & Brewer Ltd - The Synod of Dort [1618-19] was one of the most remarkable and important gatherings of Protestant divines ever assembled. Summoned to resolve doctrinal disputes in the Netherlands, it involved theologians from a number of other co untries, including Britain. The precise role played by delegates of the Church of England at the synod has been the subject of intense disagreement ever since. Drawing on new sources discovered in English and Dutch archive s, this volume provides a wide-ranging collection of edited documents [many previously unpublished] which make it possible for the first time to construct a thorough and fully contextualized account of the role played by the Briti sh delegates. Different sections of the book tackle the political and theological background to the synod, the submissions of the British delegation on issues ranging from predestination and episcopacy to catechizing and bible tra nslation, and also the aftermath of the synod and the later defences of it by the British delegates. The primary source material is set in context by a substantial introduction, which argues for a major reassessment of the role of the British divines at the synod, and emphasizes the importance of the event in allowing historians to study the detailed interaction of British and continental thinkers at a vital period in the emergence of an 'Anglican' identit y. Dr Anthony Milton is Reader in History at the University of Sheffield. Condition: Brand new (not pre-owned). Binding: Unsewn hardback Year first printed: 2002. ISBN: 9781843831570. Selden, John
The Historie of Tithes. First Edition. London, 1618
|
1618. Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n. ], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (5-1/2" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to portions of boards, corners lightly bumped. Title page printed in red and black. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however. ) Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1: 194-5.

Cowley, Abraham
The Works of Mr. Abraham Cowley. Consisting of Those Which Were Formerly Printed: and Those Which He Design's for the Press, Now Published Out of the Authors Original Copies
|
London: Printed by J. M. for Henry Herringman, 1668. Some browning and foxing to the paper, but overall a fine, handsome copy. Wing 6649; NCBEL II, 1219. Small folio, recent full blind-ruled calf antique (by Philip Dusel), raised bands, maroon morocco label, gilt decorations and lettering. Frontis portrait by William Faithorne. ¶ Issued shortly after Cowley's death, with numerous reprints quickly to follow. Cowley (1618-1667) played a central role in the development of English poetry, but it is his graceful prose essays (here included) that are most often read today. Contemporary ownership inscription of Ron. Townshend and a later one, dated 1830, of Gul. Withers Ewbank at the head of title-page. 23-line note on the front blank and a few marginalia by Townshend, the former which appears appears to be a commentary on current events, but the combination of crabbed script and 17th-century orthography make it nearly indecipherable to aged eyes.

Battles of the Thirty Years War: From White Mountain to Nordlingen, 1618-1635
|
Greenwood Press. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. This is the first complete detailed study of the military aspects of the first half of this important conflict (1618-1635). Each chapter deals with a particular battle, but Guthrie also examines wider questions of strategy, leadership, armaments, organization, logistics, and war finances. The main emphasis is on the unique character and aspects of the Thirty Years War, with attention to the evolution of warfare and weapons, the impact of this evolution on actual operations, and the replacement of the previously dominant "tercio" style of warfare by the nascent linear system. The Thirty Years War is considered within its own context, rather than merely as a poor relation to the linear or Napoleonic periods. The campaigns covered in this volume include the defeat of the Bohemian and German Protestants (1618-1623), the Danish War (1625-1629), the victories of the Swedes under Gustavus Adolphus (1630-1632), and the final defeat of the Swedes at Nordlingen in 1634. Guthrie also pays particular notice to the important battle of Breitenfeld. With the inclusion of many secondary theaters and minor actions, the whole of this work constitutes a complete military history of the German War. ISBN10: 0313320284.

Complete. Bound in later supple vellum. Very fine copy. Rare suite of engravings by Charles de Mallery (1571-1635) who worked with Philippe Galle. In 1501, with the help of the Franciscan friar Blessed Gabriel Mary (Gilbert Nicholas), she founded the contemplative order of nuns '' Les Annonciades de Bourges ''.
|
Hieronymus Sweerts, 8659, Amst., - 4to. Contemp. vellum. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece and 100 engraved illustrations in text by J. Gole. (20), 727 pp. Beautifully illustrated first and only edition of an original Dutch emblematic fable book for the education of youth. All illustrations have a Latin motto underneath, engraved on the plate, and a two-line Dutch motto printed above, which makes the book an emblem book, but all the stories are fables, and all the plates are fable-plates, mostly animal fables, so the book is above all a fable book. All moral lessons taught by the fables are explained, and all words and subjects used in the fables are extensively explained as well, teaching the children natural history, natural science, medicine etc., but especially teaching them politics and the history of The Netherlands. This last was to be expected, since the anonymous author was Pieter de la Court (1618-1685), a cloth merchant at Leyden, and an active political historian and author of the famous "Interest van Holland", in which he defended the politics of Johan de Witt against the Stadtholder. The present fable book for children was published only once, but in 1731 it was adapted in verse by Jan van Hoogstraten and published under the latter's name, illustrated with the same engraved plates first used here. The book represents a perfect example of the coexistence and cross-fertilisation of fable and emblem books, which took place in The Netherlands in the late 16th century. Fine copy.- (First and last lvs. sl frayed at outer margins; stain at lower corner in one quire). Landwehr, Emblem & Fable Books, 433; cf. Cat. Van Rijn 926 (Rotterdam ed. of 1731 by Van Hoogstraten); Anne Stevenson Hobbs, Fables, p. 15, and pp. 26-27 (discussing the emblem-fable connection). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Boyer, Claude (1618-1698)
Porus, ou La generosite d'Alexandre
|
Boyer, Claude (1618-1698). Porus, ou La generosite d'Alexandre [Texte imprime], tragedie. Paris: T. Quinet, 1648. Probably performed in the Marais in 1646, as it does not appear in the repertory of the Hotel de Bourgogne for 1646-7. Priv. Nov 20,1647; Acheve Feb 28, 1648. Original edition. Cioranescu 17 s., n! 16118. Modern quarter morocco and boards. Very clean copy, probably washed. 1f Title page, verso blank; 4p dedication to the Chevalier de Riviere, governor of Espernay; 1p priv.; 1p acteurs; 103p text. The plot finds Alexander the Great in India. Alexander has captured Argire, the wife and Oraxene and Clairance, the daughters of Porus. Both daughters stand in danger of being seduced by suitors, and Argire is vulnerable to Alexander himself, so Porus in disguise visits Alexander's camp, wishing to murder the conqueror, who in fact is in danger of assassination from Attale, who is a member of Porus' court. Saved by his wife from implication in the plot, the innocent Porus returns to his camp, puts down an insurrection by Attale and has him executed. Alexander is so deeply impressed that Porus is given his freedom and his family. The daughters happily marry. Lancaster calls it a "history coated romance," in which the play romanticizes the historical facts of the encounter between Alexandre and Porus--the latter's capture, his display of fortitude and the conquerer's magnanimity, were probably derived from Plutarch rather than from Quintus Curtius. The unities are partially observed except for a subordinate plot, an epilogue instead of a fifth act, and a highly unusual fight on stage in the fifth act, which became standard over time. Most of the influence of the play is Racine's Alexandre (1665), which was written for Moliere's troupe in order to compete with Porus, which had been restaged at the Hotel de Bourgogne, calling it Alexandre in order to distinguish between the two works. If this influence is correct, it gives to Boyer the credit, not of inspiring Racine's plot, but of suggesting the subject, and explains why Racine called his play Alexandre rather than Porus, which would otherwise have been a more logical name for it. Following this, Boyer's play was reissued with the title Le Grand Alexandre ou Porus (Lancaster). The theme of Alexander in India was popular at the time because of the interest in Asian customs, an interest that remained so for decades. An opera Alesandro nell' Inde (1729) with libretto by Metastasio is based on the dramas by Boyer and Racine and was performed for over 50 years, with numerous different settings. The plot resembles Mangon's Tamerlan, although Lancaster cannot determine which appeared first. Claude Boyer (1618 in Albi - July 22, 1698 in Paris). Cleric, dramatic author, French apologist and poet. Boyer was educated among Jesuits, wrote tragedies, and was elected member of the French Academy in 1666. In 1645, he settled in Paris and produced his first play, Porcie Roman, at Hotel de Bougogne, 1646. Boyer wrote about 30 plays, the majority of them tragedies. At the time Boyer was considered a rival of Boileau and Racine. Boyer made a great impression on the public and had a long writing career from 1645 to 1680 with Agamemnon, which was a triumph, and he even composed with Zenobie in 1693. Although eclipsed by Racine, Boyer had the merits of a careful craftsman who was able to adapt himself to varying tastes in other fields than that of comedy. A 12mo edition was published in 1666 under the title Grand Alexandre, ou Porus in Indes. Locations: University of Chicago.

|

SARDI, Pietro.
Including chapters devoted to the latest developments in Dutch fortification, Corno Dogale Della Architettura Militare.
|
I. Giunti, 3533, Venice, - Folio. Contemporary vellum. With richly engraved allegorical title including a bust of the author, aged 79, at the bottom, large woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf, 9 mostly double-page engraved plates, 37 large engravings in text, 8 double-page and 14 full-page, and several small woodcut figures in text. (28), 220 pp. Second, entirely revised and enlarged edition of one of the most famous early books in the science of military fortification, first published at Venice in 1618 under the title Corona Imperiale della Architettura militare. This first edition was already in 1623 translated into the German, and was much in use and several times republished in Germany. Jähns, praising the author "Ein fruchtbarer, römischer Schriftsteller", discusses the German edition only, which consisted of two treatises, the one treating the theory and the other the practice of military fortification. The present second Italian edition however, is divided into seven books, the first two teaching miliraty fortification in theory and practice. The third book, starting with a foreword to the reader, is devoted to the new developments in fortification as practiced by the Dutch. The books 5-7 then are short treatises on Roman military camping and dicipline, the composition of squadrons, military mathematics, etc. So the present second edition probably was not only newly titled "Corno Dogale" to honor the Venetian Doge's, but mainly because it was quite another book. Good copy, with the bookplates of the "Bibliotheca della Marmora", and of Mark Dineley. Cockle 828 (mentions only 44 plates and engravings) Cf. Jähns pp. 1098-1099 (only discussing the first ed.).
|

PALLAVICINI, (Giuseppe or Ferrante?).
First and only edition of an interesting emblem book with 144 small circular emblems, Devises & emblemes d'amour, anciens & modernes moralisez & expliquez, en sept sortes de Langues.
|
Daniel de la Feuille, 14729, Amsterdam, - 4to. Three-quarter 19th century red morocco, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, boards covered with marbled paper, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved frontispiece by G. van Gouwen after F. de Kaarsgiter, title-pages with woodcut vignette and printed in red and black, and 24 copperplates (ca. 14 x 95 mm) each containing six emblems in circles by Jan van Vianen. (4), 24 fols. First and only edition of this very nice emblem book by Pallavicini. It is not clear who this is. On the title he is referred to as 'Professeur des langues etrangeres'; some bibliographies consider Giuseppe Pallavicini as the author, others think of the notorious Ferrante Pallavicini (1618-1644), an Italian writer of lampoons and satires which were so popular that booksellers and printers bought them from him at a premium. Pallavicino's scandalous satires, which cost him his head at the age of twenty-five, were all published under pseudonyms or anonymously. There are twenty-four pages with six small circular emblems (numbered 1-6). Although only five circles are signed, all illustrations can be attributed to Jan van Vianen. The emblems are derived from the emblems in the works of Jacob Cats, Daniel Heinsius' Emblemata amatoria, Otto van Veen's Amorum emblemata, Jacob Viverius, and Crispijn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis. Each emblem has an engraved French motto and is accompanied on the facing page by translations of the motto in Latin, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, English and German. French stanzas supplement these mottoes. Though the emblems are derived from other sources, the text is entirely original. Contents:f. 1 v: Frontispiece with engraved text 'Cupido à la Jeunesse', engraved by G. v. Gouwen after F. de Kaarsgi(e)ter (recto blank).f. 2r: First slightly different title without date:Devises & emblemes d'amour, ancienes & modernes moralisees en vers Francois, & expliquées, en sept Langues. A1r).f. 4v (numbered p. 1) with text to the facing plate with the first 6 emblems, numbered 1.In total there are 24 numered plates with on their verso's the texts to the facing plates. On the verso of plate 24 there is an 'Avertissement' with other books for sale at De la Feuille's bookshop. The first entry refers to another emblem book with more or less the same title: (Henri van Offelen), Devises et emblemes anciennes et modernes, tirées . It was this emblem book that came in the possession of Peter the Great, tsar of Russia, during his stay in Amsterdam in 1697-8. The tsar was inspired by the imagery in the book, and sought to transfer some of its emblems into crests that would adorn the ships in the new navy he was just beginning to construct. Peter engaged the services of one Il'ja Kopievskij, a Pole resident in Amsterdam, to translate the emblem titles in de la Feuille's compilation (which were listed therein in Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, English and German) into Russian, which were ultimately published under the title Symbola et Emblemata in 1705 by the bookseller Hendrik Wetstein.
