Yvone Parisino Capucino (Yves de Paris)
Digestum Sapientiae in quo habetur scientiarum omnium rerum divinarum atque humanarum nexus, & ad Prima Principia reductio.
|
Pp (20), 41, (1), 1238 (i.e. 1236), 6.

[ELIZABETH I/MANUSCRIPT]
Privy Council Document, one leaf [32 x 21.5 cm], written in a chancelry hand in ink on paper, 32 lines, dated September 23, 1599, signed by seven members of the Queen!s Privy Council. With a contemporary leaf folded as an envelope and annotated with

1599. *Ronald, The Pirate Queen: Elizabeth I, Her Pirate Adventurers, and the Dawn of Empire, 2007.. Highly evocative manuscript document from the reign of Elizabeth I, signed by her entire Privy Council with the exception of Essex, who was directing the ill-fated Irish Campaign. The text authorizes payment for a successful spying expedition against the Spanish: !a Bark sent out from Plymouth to ye coast of Spayne for discoveries.! While spying on Spain, Elizabeth I engaged wholeheartedly in a secondary use for her fleet!to intercept all Spanish ships on their return from the New World. Although the Queen pleaded ignorance of this tactic during the undeclared Anglo-Spanish War: !The rules of these naval engagements had been well defined by the English Admiralty: the queen received a one-third share of the registered plunder, the investors a third, and the crew a third. The Admiralty would get a 10-percent slice off the top.! (Ronald, p 295.) In 1599, the Privy Council!a secretive cabinet body of Elizabeth!s closest and most powerful advisors!included some of the greatest names in English history. Nottingham, commander of the British Fleet which defeated the Armada and the statesman Robert Cecil were among those whom the Queen selected carefully for the posts. On the day after this document was signed, the missing Council-Member Essex would set out on his voyage back to England, where he would be greeted by imprisonment for his mismanagement of the Irish Campaign, and eventually, execution. In this missive, the Privy Council reconsiders the seemingly exorbitant fee (over 164 pounds) charged for the use of ships sailing between Plymouth and Spain, verifies the cost with the mayor of Plymouth, and eventually allows an expense of 200 pounds. The reason given for this change of heart is that !good service was donne at that tyme wch he by interrupting certaine letrs of the enemyes, wch served to good purpose for discovery of their intentions.! The enemies in question were of course the Spaniards, who would continue to wage war against England until 1604, despite the devastating blow Elizabeth I had dealt them by defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588.

First edition. This work treats of the comparative values of Roman, Greek, Hebrew and Spanish weights and measures against those of Toledo. Frankfort am Main: Johann Feyerabends, 1599. Small quarto. (iv), (148) ff. First and only edition. Brunet calls this compilation of wood-engravings "rare et fort curieux." Amman, whose career flourished after his move to Nuremburg in 1561, succeeded Virgil Solis as artist for the printer Carl Sigmund Feyerabends. Originally intended for instructional use, this book, whose images include costumes, potentates and emblematic devices, is rarely encountered complete. This is the first complete copy to appear on the market in over twenty years. Bound in full straight-grain blue morocco with gilt and blind borders, and armorial device on both panels featuring a winged griffin beneath a pair of crowns. This is the Huth copy, with his leather booklabel on front pastedown. Carefully washed, leaves show only minor soiling and spotting, and the binding exhibits only the slightest shelfwear. (Bern?, 1599).. Folio (312 x 200 mm). 2 Teile in 1 Bd. Ae. (Tschudin, The Ancient Paper-Mills of Basle and their Marks, S. 142, Nr. 145 [Vorsatz] und S. 143, Nr. 152). Johannes Gruner, Johann Viret, Johann Ulrich Viret, SVC Reltest?, Johann Jacob Haller (siehe Kommentar). B. Gordon, Heinrich Bullinger, in: Lindberg, The Reformation theologians (2002), S. 170f.; C. Moser, Heinrich Bullinger's Efforts to Document the Zurich Reformation: History as Legacy, in: Gordon/Campi, Architect of Reformation (2004), S. 201ff.; Ders., Bullingers Geschichtswerk und dessen Überlieferung, in: Der Nachfolger - Heinrich Bullinger (2004), S. 86ff.; Feller/Bonjour 191f.; Pestalozzi, Heinrich Bullinger. Leben und ausgewählte Schriften (1858), 471f. A finely hand-written early copy of Bullinger's History of Reformation which circulated in manuscript form only up to the 19th century. Originally conceived as a continuation of his fragmentary Swiss Chronicle (Eydgenössische Chronik) Bullinger's text developed into a comprehensive, accurate and truthful account of the events in the period from 1519 to 1533. The chronicle treats the history of the Zurich Reformation in the context of both political and ecclesiastical events in the Swiss Confederation and crucial foreign events. The account begins with a reflection of the relationship between ecclesiastical and political institutions in Zurich before the Reformation, a short biography of Zwingli including a report on his appointment as stipendiary priest (Leutpriester) in Zurich. The opposition to the Reformation in the Inner Catholic states as well as the various military campaigns and battles in which the Swiss took part were of particular interest to the author. On the European stage, the struggle in Italy between Charles V, the papacy, and Francis I, is given a prominent place, though these events are viewed through the lens of Swiss participation in the military campaigns. As to the Empire, Bullinger's interest is almost entirely limited to the development of the Reformation. Bullinger's History of the Reformation is something like the Swiss equivalent to Johann Sleidanus' De statu religionis et rei puvlicae Carolo Quinto Caesare commentariorum libris XXV (Commentary of the state of religion and of the states under Emperor Charles V). However, the political and confessional tensions of the time made it impossible to publish the manuscript, although it seems that Bullinger might never have intended for it to be printed. Nevertheless, in spite of its lenght the 'Historia oder Geschichten' was frequently copied by hand till the 19th century and influenced subsequent historical writing on the Zurich Reformation. "In the Reformed tradition Heinrich Bullinger's 'History of the Reformation' was a fundamental resource for historical knowledge of the period and soon established itself as the canonical narrative of the Zurich Reformation" (Christian Moser). A printed edition of Bullinger's historic work appeared in 1838-1840 in two volumes. The scribe of this manuscript, Johannes Berchdolt (or Berchtold) wrote his name on both titles and at the final leaf together with the date of completion of the codex on 15 August 1599. It may have been written at Berne or Basel, from where the paper was obtained (cf. Tschudin, The Ancient Paper-Mills of Basle and their Marks, p. 142, no. 145 [first fly-leaf], and p. 143, no. 152). The provenance refers to the city of Bern or its dominion. The two earliest owner's entries stem from a Jean Viret (Vaud) and a certain Johannes Gruner (Bern) and date both from the year 1600. Another entry dates from 11 September 1630 and says that the volume was inherited from 'Johannes Vireti's son Hans Ulrich', unfortunately the name of the former buyer is crossed out. The last ms. entry was written by a certain Johann Jacob Haller in 1714. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, back on five raised bands, with 1 (of 2) brassed clasps (heavily rubbed, corners worn).

KALAI, Samuel Ben Moses
Mishpetei Shemuel [responsa]
|
1599. FIRST EDITION. KALAI, Samuel Ben Moses. Mishpetei Shemu'el [Responsa]. Venice: Daniel Zanetti, 1599. Folio, modern full brown buckram gilt. $3500. First edition of Kalai's responsa, of importance to the history of the Jews in Greece, finely printed by Daniel Zanetti in Venice, with characteristic decorative woodcut title page. The 16th-century Turkish rabbi Samuel Ben Moses Kalai "settled in Salonika [Greece] where he served as rabbi of the Keianah community. He was regarded as the Talmudic authority for the whole country and problems were addressed to him from various towns" (Encyclopaedia Judaica). "A special importance attaches to responsa as a primary source for a knowledge of the history of the Jews in the various countries. Responsa literature has one advantage over such other accepted historical sources as chronographies, official documents, biographies, etc., since the evidence it affords is undesigned, without any specific historical purpose or intention" (Encyclopaedia Judaica). The Zanetti family were publishers for a number of generations in Venice and issued several important Hebrew works. This volume features a highly decorative title page with a woodcut floral border, a hallmark of the Zanetti printers. Vinograd, Venice 879. Interior and woodcut title page bright. Faint marginal dampstaining, trace worming to first few leaves, not affecting text. A lovely copy in near-fine condition.

- Folio (312 x 200 mm). 2 Teile in 1 Bd. Ae. (Tschudin, The Ancient Paper-Mills of Basle and their Marks, S. 142, Nr. 145 [Vorsatz] und S. 143, Nr. 152).

? VD17 1:009287N. Jähns 955. * Rare first German edition of one of the most important and most influential books on manners and etiquette. The subjects of the dialogues include wisdom of sovereigns, duties of legal judges, election of civil servants, dignity of women, honour and fidelity. Guazzo even mentions the importance of conversations for a happy relationship between men and women without conflict and violence. With two printer's devices. ? Evenly lightly browned. Curiously, bound together with a text on alliances in times of war in contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine, one corner split.

London: Imprinted At London By The Deputies Of Christopher Barker, Printer To The Queenes Most Excellent Majestie., 1599. Fine Binding. Very Good. 8vo - over 7!" - 9!" tall. 1599 Geneva Breeches Holy Bible Full title: "The Bible, That Is The Holy Scriptvres Conteined In The Olde And Newe Testament. Translated According To The Ebrew And Greeke, and Conferred With The Best Translations in divers languages. With most profitable Annotations vpon all the hard places, and other things of great importance. Imprinted At London By The Deputies Of Christopher Barker, Printer To The Queenes Most Excellent Majestie. 1599." The edition of 1599 was the most popular of the Geneva Bibles as it contained the most extensive notes of any addition. It is also enhanced with the addition of numerous woodcuts in the texts and also 4 maps. The maps are wonderful, one map depicts strange creatures in the sea, another shows 2 ships. Both woodcut title pages are present and are very attractive. They were produced by John Speed, famous mapmaker and also famous for his Genealogies. Lacks woodcut general title, woodcut New Testament title present, the text of the title is contained within a Heart Shaped Central Panel, surrounded by woodcut vignettes of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, The 12 Apostles, and The Shields of the 12 Tribes of Israel. This Holy Bible is listed in Herbert's "Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible 1525-1961", Number 252. With the reading and | seuen and twenty prouinces at Esther i,1, and with the mistake in Psalm lxxiii, 27 "that they" for "they that" which occurs in the other similar editions, corrected in this edition. At the base of the woodcut NT title page there is a woodcut of a line of music in place of the usual words Cum Privilegio. Collation: Printed title follows with woodcut vignette of the Parting of the Red Sea, blank on the verso, followed by "To the Christian Reader", "Of the incomparable treasure of the holy scripture", "How to take profite in reading of the Holy Scriptures" and "The names and order of all the Bookes of the Old and New Testament" The text Genesis-Job ff. 2 to 190a, verso blank, 1f. blank; Psalms-Malachi, with title, verso blank, text ff. 2 to 127a, verso blank; The books of the Apocrypha are listed but not present; New Testament; Woodcut title, verso blank, "The Printer to the Diligent Reader", to the verso woodcut map of "The description of the Holy Land" ff. 1 to 121, tables not paginated. Signatures: A-Z8 &6, Aa-Qq8, Aaa-Rrr4, 454ff. Psalms A-G5. This Geneva version has Tomson's New Testament, but with the Annotations of Francis Junius to the Book of Revelation. Also "The Order of Time, whereunto the Contents of this booke are to be referred" precedes Revelation. Attractive binding of probably 19th Century brown tree calf, with five raised bands with double gilt borders to the spine with gilt title and border on red morocco label in the second compartment, new endpapers, page edges waxed yellow. Condition very good. Covers are slightly rubbed at the extremeties, woodcut general title missing, printed title laid down with loss in margins, preliminary pages repaired, pages are toned and dust soiled, more so in the first half of the Bible, a few early ms notes and scribbles to margins here and there and verso of title pages. Printed in Roman type, two columns to the page with notes in each margin. The Bible is complete, with Tables present at the end. The Book of Psalms at the end, by Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins, is printed with woodcut musical notation and is complete with all prayers and table present. "The Booke of Psalmes: Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, Iohn Hopkins, and others: conferred with the Hebrew ; with apt Notes to sing them withall." The Geneva "Breeches" Bible can be identified by the Passages, Genesis Chapter III Verse 7: "Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knewe that they were naked, and they sewed figge leaves together and made themselves breeches." And also Luke Chapter II Verse 12: "Ye shall finde the childe swadled and layde in a cratch

"Con una nuova Tavola de i Capitoli". Opera dedicata a Tomaso Zarmosa. Cm.19,7x14,5. Pg.(32); 232. In Venetia, appresso Lucio Spineda, 1699. BMC-STC Italia, 194. Adams, I, 2538. Sapori, I, 755, cita l'edizione veneziana del 1737.

THE NEW TESTAMENT OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.GENEVA VERSION
|
Deputies of Christopher Barker, London 1599 - Title, Cont: "Translated out of Greeke by Theod. Beza: With briefe Summaries and expositions upon the hard places by the said Author, Ioac. Camer and P. Leseler, Villerius. Englished by L. Tomson. Together with the Annotations of Fr. Junius upon the Revelation of S. Iohn. Imprinted at London by the Deputies of Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes most Excellent Maiestie. 1599." No prelims present. Title page, as in Herbert 1599, is the 24-compartment woodcut frame, with the tents of the 12 tribes on the left, figures of the 12 Apostles on the Right, inner corners of the four Gospel authors, with the symbols of the Dove and Angus Dei, the lamp, and two open books. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. At the base of the cut is a line of music. A preliminary leaf has a page of notes from "the printer to the diligent reader." Verso of this leaf is "The description of the holy Land conteining the places mentioned in the foure Evangelists." above a map with a legend below. The Book of Matthew starts on p. 3 and text block goes through p. 61b. Pages 62-121b are in a second cover. Page 110b, which precedes the Book of Revelation, contains a chart "The Order of Time." These two volumes appear to have been hand-bound in a set of trimmed leaves, which was then sewn with cord, and bound in boards covered with marbled paper, with spine and all edges bound with once-ivory vellum. Covers are soiled and warped with trim in various stages of disintegration, but have accomplished the purpose of protecting the contents. Only traces of foxing, with integrity of the stock amazingly good. Inside each book is a printed label "Joseph Angus." T.p. is detached from binding, and first leaf is partially detached. All other pps. holding tight. Print is Roman Style. There are occasional marginal notes and underlinings in brown ink. Presumably the notes of Joseph Angus (1816-1902), a noted Baptist theologian and historian who was a member of the New Testament Company for the Revision of the Scriptures for the American Bible Union. His extensive personal library formed the foundation of the Angus Library at Regent's Park College, Oxford, England, of which Angus was Principal 1849 - 1893. This is an original printing, not a facsimile edition, a prime candidate for the binder. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation?
|
London: George Bishop, Ralph Newberie, and Robert Barker, 1599-1600. Second edition, very much enlarged; 3 volumes, folio; pp. [22], 606; [16], 312, 204; [16], 868; later full calf (vol. III not uniform and slightly larger), all neatly rebacked to match, red and black morocco labels on spines; good looking set of the best textual edition. Volume II is the second issue with the printer's ornament conforming to "state 2" as illustrated by Quinn, p. 501. The map, as usual, is lacking, and the Voyage to Cadiz is not included at the end of vol. I, per Church, p. 756: "In this issue the honourable voyage to Cadiz is ? omitted, the volume stopping at p. 606. " Church explains the reason for this. The Earl of Essex was in disgrace when this 1599 issue came out, and the narrative of his voyage was suppressed. The title-pp. of the first two volumes are in the most common setting, with line 7 endings in "yeres" as oposed to "yeares" (see STC). Hill; 743: "This enormous work-it contains one million, seven hundred thousand words-is the most complete collection of voyage and discoveries ? and of the nautical achievements of the Elizabethans. " Church 322: "An invaluable treasure of nautical information. " See Quinn, Hakluyt Handbook (Hakluyt Society, 1974); Sabin 29598; STC 12626a.

"AUBERY, Jean;"
L'Antidote d'amour.
|
Botero Benes, Giovanni (Juan)
Relaciones universales del mundo - Primera y segunda parte
|
Valladolid, Diego Fernandez de Cordoba - 1599/1600/1603. (Palau 33704; Vindel pp 56-59; JCB, Europ Americana: 603/17; JCB 1922: III pp 20; Sabin 6809; Medina: BHA 468; Burden, 129). In folio, contemporary limp vellum. Title in contemporary manuscript on spine. Two books in one volume. 5 folding maps.*This is Giovanni Botero's famous description of the world, first published in Italian (Bergamo 1594/ 1595), in Spanish. There is some bibliographical confusion about the Spanish editions. Palau mentions a first edition in Spanish, dated 1600, and a second edition (as ours) dated 1603 on the title page. Exept for the date on the title page however, both books seem to be identical. Other bibliographers only mention (have seen) the 1603 edition. The second confusion is about the maps. Most bibliographers do not mention the folded in maps (by Hernando de Solis), though they are an essential part of the book. These maps are a set of the earliest Spanish maps of the world, and extremely rare (compare Vindel). The first part is divided into six books. Book four and five are dedicated to the new world and book six is dedicated to the islands in the oceans, including Japan , the Philippines ; Indonesia , Singapore and the islands of China but also the islands around Africa, the Caribbean and the fabled Frisland (183 in verso) and the islands of Holland, Zeeland, all of Great Britain; Malta Cyprus and the Mediterranean. The second part is historically oriented and decribes the characteristics of the some key European nations and the great empires of the past and present world (Romans but also Moghul, Chinese and Japanese empires). The maps. The five maps in the book: a set of the world and continents are made after Ortelius by the Spanish cartographer Hernan de Solis y Ribadenayra. The world map is engraved after Ortelius first state worldmap of 1570 (bulging South America) and surrounded by strapwork which contains four medalions, each showing one of the continents. A playful idea which enhances the coherence of the five maps. This worldmap , with lettering in Spanish and signed in the plate (Solis fecit, Valladolid) and to be dated 1598 (as the America map, also signed by Solis is) (Shirley 242). The map is rare and Map Prices Records only mention three copies sold in the last 25 years. The map of the Americas is also surrounded by strapwork, showing in two medalions the faces of Columbus and of Vespucci. The characteristic western bulge of South America is there and a large Southland is connected to New Guinee. This map is also signed and in this case dated in the plate: Hernando de Soliz lo heco en Valladolid, anno de 1598. This well engraved map is rarely found in the book, which itself is scarce (Burden 129; Vindel: ) The only Spanish maps of the Americas, which precede the Solis map are the famous Pedro de Martyr map of the Caribbean (1511); the Medina maps in his Arte de Navigar; the small Chavez map of South America (1554) and the Cieza de Leon map of that same year. Map Prices records show only one copy offered for sale in the last 25 years. The other continent maps: Europe, Africa and Asia, are similar to the corresponding Ortelius maps though they are new engravings and carry Spanish lettering. #[600]

HAKLUYT, RICHARD
The principal navigations, voyages, traffiques and discoveries of the English nation
|
George Bishop, Ralph Newberie, and Robert Barker 1599-1600, London - Second edition, very much enlarged; 3 volumes, folio; pp. 756: "In this issue the honourable voyage to Cadiz is omitted, the volume stopping at p. 606." Church explains the reason for this. The Earl of Essex was in disgrace when this 1599 issue came out, and the narrative of his voyage was suppressed. The title-pp. of the first two volumes are in the most common setting, with line 7 endings in "yeres" as oposed to "yeares" (see STC). Hill; 743: "This enormous work - it contains one million, seven hundred thousand words - is the most complete collection of voyage and discoveries and of the nautical achievements of the Elizabethans." Church 322: "An invaluable treasure of nautical information." See Quinn, Hakluyt Handbook (Hakluyt Society, 1974); Sabin 29598; STC 12626a.

This worldmap, with lettering in Spanish and signed in the plate (Solis fecit, Valladolid) and to be dated 1598 (as the America map, also signed by Solis is) (Shirley 242). #[600] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
