Suite aux édicts promulgués à Lyon par Henri III en Septembre et Octobre alors que la cinquième guerre civile se poursuit depuis le printemps 1574, Innocent Gentillet prévient du péril du régicide et montre la possibilité de la coexistence de deux religions. Das Buch schildert Leben und Taten des Conquistadores Hernando Cortez. In den Jahre zwischen der ersten italienischen Übersetzung (1556) und 1599 erschienen nicht weniger als 18 italienische Ausgaben "with trifling variations", "showing how much interest was felt in Italy respecting the conquests by Cortez and Pizarro." (Sabin) - Zum Werk selbst sagt Sabin: "'Affords us the most authentic views of the primitive condition of the Indians before tyranny had crushed, or civilization had corrupted them.' (T. W. Fields). A Paris chez Guillaume Chaudière 1576 - In-4 de (16)-485-(26) pp., vélin à petits rabats, lacets, titre manuscrit au dos (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale rare de la traduction française de l'Historia de vita et gestis Scanderbegi de Marinus Barletius publié une première fois à Rome vers 1508. Portrait gravé. « Le plus considérable des ouvrages de Jacques de Lavardin est l'Histoire de Georges Castriot, surnommé Scanderberg, roy d'Albanie. Il a été réimprimé en 1597, 1604, 1621. Le titre de cet ouvrage l'attribue de plein droit à Jacques de Lavardin, et, sur la foi de ce titre, Florent Chrestien et Amadis Jamyn ont placé le sieur du Plessis-Bourrot au nombre des plus patients, des plus laborieux analystes ; mais, suivant Du Verdier, l'Histoire de Scanderberg n'est qu'une traduction de l'ouvrage latin de Marino Barlezio, de Sculari, publié en 1506 et en 1537, à Rome et à Strasbourg, sous le litre de De vita et laudibus Scanderbergii. Ce qui a été confirmé par le P. Du Poncet, jésuite, dans la préface de son Histoire de Scanderberg, publiée en 1709 » (Histoire littéraire du Maine par Jean Barthélemy Hauréau, 1852, p. 195). Héros national d'Albanie, Georges Castriot Skanderbeg (1405-1468) fut contraint de suivre les cours de l'école militaire ottomane et remporta plusieurs victoires militaires en Europe pour le compte de l'Empire. Il reçut alors le titre ottoman Alexandre (traduit en albanais par Skanderbeg), avant de rejeter l'islam pour défendre la chrétienté en Albanie. Pendant près d’un quart de siècle, aussitôt salué par les papes Nicolas V et Pie II du nom de « champion du Christ » infligea de rudes défaites aux troupes turques, sans pouvoir toutefois les chasser définitivement. Après la mort de Skanderbeg, les provinces albanaises retombèrent dans leurs déchirements féodaux, et le sultan Murat II acheva d’abattre ce « rempart papiste ». Brunet, I, 658. Ils ont été mis sous la forme de tableaux dichotomiques, par Johann Thomas Freige, en suivant les leçons de son maître Ramus (1515-1572) ou les principes de sa méthode. "En achevant de détruire l'autorité d'Aristote, Ramus rendit une nouvelle philosophie possible et prépara les esprits à la recevoir par l'introduction d'une meilleure méthode; l'oeuvre de Ramus, c'était d'émanciper la raison moderne. Il volume presenta una coperta assolutamente inusuale: si tratta di una coperta in legno massello (spessore circa 4 mm.) completamente intarsiato, sia ai piatti che al dorso, con stile di sapore nord-europeo. I piatti sono suddivisi ciascuno in tre scomparti, raffiguranti scene del Nuovo Testamento, mentre il dorso è suddiviso in quattro scomparti, sempre raffiguranti scene religiose. La legatura è con tutta probabilità tardo ottocentesca, assai salda e di buon impatto visivo. Tagli in rosso e fogli di guardia marmorizzati. Testo in cornicetta a doppia bordura, impresso in rosso e nero. 14 incisioni calcografiche a piena pagina e moltissime vignette incise nel testo. Numerosi capilettera. Giglio dei Giunti impresso in rosso al frontespizio e al recto dell'ultima carta. Impressione assai fresca, eccellenti condizioni di conservazione.

Contemporary limp vellum (lacking two pairs of ties, lightly soiled, a few pale stains). Second and best edition including 17 maps not published in the first edition of 1572. A charming and popular 16th-century atals that depicts the world as a series of islands. The New World is represented from page 154: "Descrittione della Gran Citta e isola Temistitan, " with a plan; "Descrittione dell'isola et terra di Santa Croce, overo Mondo Nuouo, " with a reduced version of Forlani's very important map of North America first published in Venice in 1565, which was the first to shows America as a single geographic entity, and is the second map to show the Strait of Anian in any detail; there are descriptions of the islands of "Spagnvola", "Cvba", "Iamaica" or "S. Herbersteins "Moscovitische Chronica" enthält, neben einer aus zum Teil verloren gegangenen russischen Chroniken gearbeiteten Geschichte Rußlands, ausführliche kartographische Angaben, Nachrichten über Sitten, Münzwesen, etc. Ihr Wert als primäre Quelle behielt sie in der russischen Hofhistoriographie bis ins 19. Jahrhundert (NDB). Eingeleitet wird das Werk durch Giovios "eigentliche Beschreibung von der Moscoviter Land und brauch" nach dem Bericht des russischen Gesandten Demetrius an Papst Clemens VII. Else fine. *Rare original (first) edition, written a grand Castellano and a style that reminds us of Erasmus. The book was reprinted in many editions and languages. Fray Luis de Granada (1504-1588) is one of the pilars of culture of XVI century Spain. His writings were very popular and went through many editions in many languages. Still his works were considered on the border of heresy (“hay algunas graves errors que tiene un cierto sabor a heregia…e otros que contradizen a la fe” ). About Antonio Ribeiro: E um dos nossos mais notavias impressores na segunda mitade do seculo XVI (Anselmo, p 267). According to Palau Salamanca and Lisbon both usually claim the first editions of separate texts of Fray Luis de Granada.#[536]

(Reliure moderne, dans le goût du temps). Edition Originale très rare dédiée à Catherine de Médicis de cet ouvrage de l'historien et homme d'Etat italien Francesco Guicciardini (1482-1540). "Questa serie di massime o sentenze, piu che d'un uomo, ci svela il pensiero politico e morale d'un intera nazione, d'un secolo intero... ci rendiamo conto del vero stato dello spirito italiano del cinquecento" (Gamba). L'ouvrage fut traduit la même année en Français puis en Anglais et en Allemand. L'éditeur du livre est le littérateur florentin Jacopo Corbinelli, qui a ajouté des notes personnelles. L'impression fut confiée à Frédéric Morel, "Imprimeur du Roi". Corbinelli, à cette époque, était en France chargé par Catherine de Médicis, dont il était parent, de l'éducation du duc d'Anjou. Il avait de nombreuses relations, était l'ami du chancelier de l'Hôpital et fréquentait le milieu littéraire parisien. Précieux exemplaire de Nicolas Moreau, seigneur d'Auteuil, trésorier de France et bibliophile célèbre. Imprinted By Richard Tottel, London 1576 - [7ff], 135ff, [2ff]. Complete with folding woodcut plate, bound after final leaf. Woodcut title, designs, initial letters and numerous coats of arms, some remarkably elaborate, throughout. Collated and complete. Bound in later speckled calf, ruled in blind, rebacked and partially recornered. A little cracking to joints Rubbed, with wear and some marking to extremities, head of spine, a few leather flaws. New endpapers. Internally a clean and bright copy, with ink inscription of Henry Beaumont to A7, occasional ink annotations to text. Tear to I5, repaired to margin, affecting text but with no loss to text. Gerard Legh, or Leigh, heraldic writer, (?-1563). A fascinating chivalric work, The Accedence of Armorie, first appearing in 1562 and published a further 3 times by Richard Tottell in 1568, 1576 and then again 1591, was later pubished (in a slightly smaller formar) by Henrie Ballad in 1597. In 1612, William Jaggard, later publisher of the Shakespeare Folios, took the work on for its sixth and final appearance. This full version should not be confused with the abridged 'Concordes of Armorie' found in Bossewell's 'Works of Armorie'. With the manuscript heritage of heraldic history extending back into the thirteenth century, it is no surprise that Legh borrowed if not plagiarised much of his work. The manuscript notes of Nicholas Ward, law student at the Inns of Court, bear too many similarities to be coincidental. Sources aside, the content of this work provides fascinating insight to the art of 'armory'. Practically, this work guides the layman through the terms and artistry of the Herald, but is much more than a simple guide. Derivations of words, symbols and their background are included - with references to Aristotle, Plato, Pliny, Seneca and many other classical authors abounding. Similarly, Legh displays deft awareness of the pivotal importance of heraldry and ancestry to English history. It also provides insight late medieval perceptions of rank and position. Gentleness is sourced directly from God, with Abel 'a gentleman both of vertue an of linnage' whilst his 'brother Cain was ungentle, for he offered God the worst of his fruits', descending by blood through countless generations (obviously not neglecting 'Jesus Christ', a gentleman of great linnage'). We should not be convinced, however, that the Tudor ideas of heraldry were confined to the modern disciplines of theology and the classical arts; the colours of insignia draw out links with astrology, alchemy and primitive medicine, and references to medieval writers John Gower and Geoffrey Chaucer. Not only a cornerstone of the printed works on Heraldry, Legh's Accedence allows the modern reader entry into the Tudor experience of hierarchy and nobility. Luborsky & Ingram. Auf der Rückseite ist das Doppelbild der Mittelplatte mit den Texten "hic est filius meus " und "dolores nostros ipse " unterschrieben. Binding executed by Brent Gration- Maxfield. First edition in Dutch. Sabin 25998. The first edition of the first voyage appeared in English in 1578, and was translated into several languages. All these editions are rare.Martin Frobisher was born around 1535 and died in 1594. He was one of the first English explorers to find and navigate the Northwest passage that led to the Orient. Frobisher was placed in command of an expedition to the New World in 1576, this was the first attempt by an Englishman to search for the Northwest Passage. Frobisher set sail on June 7, 1576, with three small ships named: the Gabriel, the Michael, and a Pinnace, unfortunately the Pinnace was sunk in a storm. Soon afterwards the Michael deserted and the Gabriel was left to sail onward alone. The Gabriel sighted the mouth of a bay, now that bay is known as Frobisher Bay, located on Baffin Island. Frobisher accidentally mistook this for the entrance to the Northwest Passage. This voyage and the following voyage were both unsuccessful in locating and establishing new colonies. Frobisher was a captain in action against the Spaniards from 1580-88. In 1585 He commanded the Primrose, as vice-admiral to Sir Francis Drake in his expedition to the West Indies. In 1591 he became a landed proprietor in Yorkshire and Notts. he found, however, little leisure fro a country life and once again he sailed with Sir Walter Raleigh. After being wounded in battle, he died in Plymouth in 1594.

Nouvelle édition, après l'originale parue en 1574 chez Vascosan, en 6 volumes in 8. On a réuni 2 éditions, le tome I chez Du Puys et le II chez Frellon dont le texte se suit exactement. Le tome I, publié 2 ans après l'originale suit les texte des 3 premiers volumes de vascosan (les oeuvres morales), le tome second réunit la matière des trois volumes suivants (les oeuvres mélées). Chaque tome dans cette édition est muni d'un répertoire et d'une table. Les deux éditions sont imprimées en petits caractères, mais le tome I chez Du Puys est d'une meilleure facture (exemplaire réglé), et se trouve être l'une des trois éditions signalées comme étant les plus belles parmi les éditions compactes , Brunet IV, 738. §Tome I : plein velin poli à rabats d'époque. Dos lisse à roulettes et fleurs de lys. Titre à la plume. Plats frappés à froid d'un médaillon central Renaissance. §Tome II : Plein Velin d'époque à rabats. traces de lacets. Dos muet. Titolo in nero su tassello al dorso, recante altresì un titolo calligrafato in antico. Tagli spruzzati rossi. Frontespizio con ancora aldina incisa su legno e antica firma di appartenenza. Dedicatoria a Giovan Francesco Gambara. Testatine, finalini e iniziali ornate incise su legno. Ampio indice preliminare. Testo bicolonne. Minimi aloni ad alcune pp. Ottimo e genuino esemplare, difficilissimo a reperirsi in queste condizioni conservative, come confermato anche dall'annotazione del Renouard: "Ces sortes de livres sont devenus rares, et ne se trouvent presque jamais que fort mal conditionnés, parce que pendant un grand nombre d'années ils ont été sans cesse feuilletés par la multitude de ceux qui, bien plus que maintenant, faisoient des ouvrages de Cicéron un étude opiniâtre, et même aussi cherchoient à donner une tournure cicéronienne à tout ce qu'ils écrivoient en langue latine. J'ai de ce Nizolius de 1576 un exemplaire en grand papier, mais dont la conservation n'est point parfaite". Reimpressione aldina di queste monumentali concordanze lessicali delle opere ciceroniane, pubblicate per la prima volta a Brescia nel 1535 col titolo "Observationes in M. T. Ciceronem"; l'edizione è notevolmente ampliata rispetto alla precedente aldina del 1570. L'opera "gli assegna un posto eminente nella schiera dei "ciceroniani" della Rinascenza: il N. si manifesta infatti come uno dei più ferventi conoscitori e difensori di ogni eleganza dello stile ciceroniano. E il libro ebbe grande fortuna, giacché sopravvisse anche alla decadenza del ciceronismo e fu rimesso poi in onore dalla reazione classicistica dell'Arcadia" (Guido Calogero in Encicl. Italiana, XXIV, 862). "Cette ouvrage est un recueil alphabetique des tous les mots employées par l"orateur romain, avec des examples qui servent à en determiner les differents acceptions. Michael Nizzoli, neveu de Mario, en publia une nouvelle edition, corrigée sur les manuscrits de son oncle. Il Nizzoli, o Nizolio (Brescello, 1488-Sabbioneta, 1566), umanista allievo del Valla, letterato e filosofo, fu professore nelle università di Parma e di Sabbioneta. La sua più importante opera filosofica è il "De veri principiis et de vera ratione philosophandi contra Pseudophilosophos" (1553), apprezzata dallo stesso Leibniz, che la ristampò due volte, nel 1671 e nel 1674, con il titolo "Antibarbarus philosophicus". Oppositore della scolastica e delle sue astrusità, le sue posizioni furono influenzate dal nominalismo di Occam e si situano fra le più stimolani e antitradizionalistiche del nostro Rinascimento. Hugo de Mena, 1576. First edition. 68 leaves. Tied contemporary flexible vellum, title in manuscript on the spine. Woodcut coat of arms on the title-page, repeated on the large folding plate, and on one other page, with an additional small woodcut of the Crucifixion. One tie broken, split at the top joint, a tear on the title-page, else a handsome, very good copy. An excessively rare first edition of the second work of Juan Latino, the great "Ethiopian Humanist. " Latino (also known as Juan de Sessa) was captured by Spanish sailors, probably near the coast of Guinea, and subsequently sold to Gonzalo Ferdinando de Cordova Duca de Sessa, hence Juan's name. Sponsored by his master, Juan studied at the University of Grenada, eventually was set free, and received the chair of grammar at his university. He was the first published African poet in Europe, the first African to be published in Europe in Latin (thus his later name, Latino), and the second African to be published in Europe, after Leo Africanus. Cervantes mentions Latino in his classic work Don Quixote as "El Negro Juan Latino, " and regarded him as the epitome of a pedantic scholar (not without some derision, as Cervantes himself was not as fluent in Latin as he would have liked to be). In this particular work, Latino's second of three (he published a similar work in 1573, issued by the same publisher, known in only one copy, Blockson 101 #2) he describes in both prose and verse the celebration of the transfer of the Royal remains from the Cathedral in Granada, to the mausoleum in the Royal monastery Escorial, by the command of King Philip II. Apparently only two other copies are known, at Harvard and the University of Grenada. The only Juan Latino first edition we have ever seen on the market.

Cette première édition fut insérée dans le recueil de coutumes du sud-ouest de la France publié à Bordeaux par Simon Millanges en 1576, mais elle fut également diffusée séparément comme en témoignent les exemplaires conservés à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France ou à la Bibliothèque Municipale de Toulouse.
