Reliure du temps, coiffes absentes, charnières fendues en tête et en queue, coins émoussés. ex-libris héraldique au contreplat de J.-A.-G. Boucher de Crevecoeur. (4) ff., 1118 pp., (39) ff. Signatures : +4 [a-g]6 [aa-zz]6 [aaa-zzz]6 [aaaa-zzzz]6 *6 at6 et6 it6 ot6 ut st6 ss6. Petit travail de vers dans les marges d'une trentaine de ff. Première édition des oeuvres de Plaute avec le commentaire de Denis Lambin. L'humaniste picard Denis Lambin (Montreuil/Mer 1516 - Paris 1572) n'avait pu mettre la dernière main à cette édition de Plaute. C'est Jacques Hélie, autre professeur du Collège Royal avec qui Lambin avait échangé de nombreuses informations, qui la termina à partir des notes laissées par son confrère. Il ajouta lui-même quelques commentaires et des tables et c'est lui qui signa la dédicace. Cette édition, qui fut reproduite plusieurs fois est recherchée pour la qualité de son apparat critique. On remarque après la dédicace un poème grec de Jean Dorat suivi de sa traduction latine. Notre exemplaire fait partie des rares publiés à la date de 1576. La plupart sont en effet datés de 1577. Erreurs de pagination des pages 37 à 48 (foliotation puis pargination en pairs) sans conséquence pour le texte puis page 428 au lieu de 429. 1 bois usé page 245. Les marges de la page 263 sont amplement décorées de bois. Petite déchirure marginale page 483. Bien complet des 167 bois in-texte de format 62 x 60 mm (collation vue sur celle de l'exemplaire de la Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon) Ex-libris manuscrit sur la page de titre : G. Bouchet (Guillaume Bouchet (1513-1594) écrivain français de Poitiers et libraire, auteur notamment de ""Les Sérées"" )? " Bel exemplaire de l'édition originale rare de la traduction française de Gabriel Chappuys. Célèbre ouvrage de Giampietro Valeriano (1477-1558) les Commentaires Hieroglypiques ne proposent pas une traduction de l'écriture des anciens égyptiens mais comportent tout ce que l'auteur a pu trouver chez les anciens auteurs dans ce que peuvent évoquer les symboles (histoire naturelle, physique, phénomènes de la nature, philosophie etc...) Venice Girolamo Porro 1576. Folio. Uncommon later edition of Labacco's work on ancient Roman architecture (first printed in Rome, 1552). 30 Copper engraved plates including an architectural title page. This copy lacks the text dedication leaf (plate [2]) and plates 32 & 33 - hence ff. [1], 3-31. Three sets of plates (#5 & 6, #7 & 8 and #21 & 22) form double page illustrations; plates 21 and 22 are confusingly numbered to the right and left of the printed description which appears on plate 21; impression on plates #12, 19 and 23 is light; plate #14 is printed over a pressed fold / crease in upper left portion of the leaf; plate #15 is not numbered; plate #24 is bound out of place, following plate #26. The edges of the margins on three plates (#11, 13, 24) are extended / repaired with contemporary paper. Mild marginal staining and soiling; name written in an old hand on the inside front cover; tear neatly sealed in upper left corner of plate #18 (extends 16 mm into blank area of impression). Bound in full contemporary vellum. Apparently there are discrepancies between copies of this edition. Thomas Ashby ("Il libro Antonio Labacco " in "La Bibliofilia" 16, 1914-15 ) calls for 1 dedication leaf (33 lines of text) which was missing in 2 of the 5 copies he examined. Adams, however, mentions 3 printed leaves, but the copy he cites at Cambridge University Library is lacking plates 31 and 32. Edit16 CNCE gives the collation as [2], 3-33. Antonio Labacco (Abacco)(fl.1558) was an eminent Italian architect. He studied in Rome under Bramante and then became the assistant of Antonio da Sangallo. His "Appartenente a l'architettura" is an important collection of architectural plates and diagrams illustrating ancient Roman edifices. [Photos available on request]. Pergamentband der Zeit auf 6 durchgezogenen Pergamentriemchen mit Papier-Rückenschildchen, altem Papier-Signaturschildchen, umgeklappten überstehenden Deckelkanten, Lederschließbändern und geprägtem Monogramm F I M auf dem Vorderdeckel. Wesenbeck gehörte zu den bedeutendsten Juristen seiner Zeit und beeinflußte die juristische Literatur fast ein ganzes Jahrhundert lang. Sein Commentarius erschien erstmals 1569; er enthält zugleich den Text der Institutiones und stellt eine ausführliche Exegese dar. Vorsatz mit alten Signaturen, der Text vereinzelt mit sauberen Unterstreichungen und Marginalien von alter Hand in Tinte. Titelblatt mit kleinem zeitgenössischen Besitzvermerk in lateinischer Sprache. Der Einband angestaubt, der Rücken dadurch etwas nachgedunkelt, insgesamt jedoch ordentliches, innen sauberes, nahezu fleckenfreies Exemplar.. Jura:

Original edition of this important work containing several texts on the history of the Waldensians, including their Confession, edited and extensively commented upon by the orthodox Dordrecht minster Balthasar Lydius (1576-1629) with the intention to trace the origins of Protestantism: the Waldensians in south France from the 11th century onwards, and the Hussites in Bohemia.The Waldensians, Waldenses or Vaudois are names for a Christian spiritual movement of the later Middle Ages, descendants of which still exist in various regions. Over time, the denomination joined the Genevan or Reformed branch of Protestantism. They were persecuted as heretical before the 16th century, endured near annihilation in the 17th century, and were then confronted with organized and generalized discrimination in centuries that followed. The earliest Waldensians believed in poverty and austerity, promoting true poverty, public preaching and the personal study of the scriptures. The sect originated in the late 12th century as the Poor Men of Lyons, a band organized by Peter Waldo, a wealthy merchant of Lyon, who gave away his property around 1177 and went about preaching apostolic poverty as the way to perfection In 1179, they went to Rome, where Pope Alexander III blessed their life but forbade preaching without authorization from the local clergy. They disobeyed and began to preach according to their own understanding of scripture. Seen by the Roman Catholic Church as unorthodox, they were formally declared heretics by Pope Lucius III in 1184 and by the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. Uno dei piu' celebri trattati sulla peste del Cinquecento, importante nella storia della medicina per la posizione di rifiuto da parte dell'Autore della teoria della peste "manufatta". Il fenomeno della peste viene analizzato con grande rigore scientifico da quattro angolazioni (corrispondenti ad altrettante parti dell'opera): che cosa sia la peste e la sua sintomatologia, le norme di igiene e di organizzazione sanitaria per i malati, la prevenzione per la popolazione della citta' non ancora contagiata, la prassi terapeutica per gli appestati. G. F. Ingrassia, dopo essersi laureato a Padova, dove era stato allievo di Falloppio e Vesalio, si stabili' a Napoli. Era protomedico in Sicilia - incarico che aveva ricevuto da Filippo II nel 1563- durante il contagio di peste nel 1575; il suo contributo fu allora importante e il suo rifiuto di ipotesi fantasiose di peste manufatta segno' un passo avanti determinante nell'epidemiologia. Nel 1577 fu pubblicata una "Parte quinta" dallo stesso stampatore. Il capitolo 3. della quarta parte fu tradotto in latino ed inserito in una raccolta di scritti curata da J. Seltene erste Ausgabe der 158 Caterina de' Medici gewidmeten Maximen und Reflexionen des großen italienischen Historikers und Staatsmanns Guicciardini (1483-1540), der einer bedeutenden Florentiner Adelsfamilie enstammte und sich in hohen Ämtern skrupellos für die despotische Herrschaft der Medici einsetzte. Seine Betrachtungen zu Philosophie und Politik wurden häufig mit dem Werk Machiavellis über den Fürsten verglichen, wobei Guicciardini, "einem Machiavelli nicht nur um ein weniges überlegen" war (Giordani, zit. nach KNLL), moralische Bedenken noch weiter ausklammerte und auch nicht versäumte, seinen unverhohlenen Zynismus in die Tat umzusetzen. Schon die Zeitgenossen warfen ihm kalten Opportunismus vor, neuere Historiker sehen in ihm einen typischen Politiker seiner Zeit, der klar zu erfassen und zu formulieren verstand, was andere letztlich ebenso praktizierten. Die vorliegenden Betrachtungen, in denen Guicciardini die allgemeine Korruption der Verhältnisse, zu der er selbst wissentlich beigetragen hatte, scharf analysiert, sind hier von Jacopo Corbinelli herausgegeben und um einige persönliche Anmerkungen ergänzt. Due frontespizi indipendenti entrambi con bella marca editoriale silografica raffigurante un centauro entro elaborata cornice rinascimentale, con motto: "viribus iungenda sapientia". Capilettera istoriati silografici. Testo su due colonne. Piena pergamena seicentesca, titolo manoscritto al dorso a 4 nervi. Edizione riveduta e corretta dall'autore di entrambe le opere, rispettivamente relative al conseguimento, alla trattenuta e al recupero di un possesso (comprese servitù d'uso). Giacomo Menochio (Pavia 1532 - ivi 1607) fu giureconsulto, lettore all'Università di Padova, Pisa, Pavia e Piemonte. Fu eletto senatore e dal 1594 presidente del Magistrato Straordinario di Milano e regio consigliere. Buon esemplare, con arrossamento di alcune parti, qualche circoscritto e leggero alone di umidità marginale. Qualche sottolineatura d'epoca e nota manoscritta di possesso al frontespizio. Leggere tracce di sporco marginale alla legatura che presenta qualche menda alle cerniere, al piede e al rivestimento pergamenaceo dei nervi.

Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1576. - Neue Ausgabe durch Guillaume Rouillé, der die Tafeln der französischen Ausgabe von 1549 übernahm, mit den italienischen Erläuterungen von Giovanni Marquale. Vollständige Ausgabe, die sowohl die Emblemholzschnitte als auch die Bordüren enthält. Ein Teil der Bordüren ist mit P. V. monogrammiert und dürfte von Pierre de Vingles oder Pierre Vueirot stammen. Die Holzschnittfolge stammt von Pierre Eskrich, wurde aber zuweilen Bernard Salomon zugeschrieben (vgl. Mortimer, French, 15). – Titel oben angeschnitten und außen mit wenig Bildberührung angerändert. Die Blätter A3 und A4 mit einigen tektierten Wurmstichen. Benoist, uno de los teólogos franceses mas interesantes de la época de la Reforma, fue el primer católico traductor de la Biblia al francés, el primer Lector Real de Teologia en 1559 en la Sorbona y más tarde Decano de la misma, Párroco de Saint Eustache en Paris, y sucesivamente confesor de Maria Estuardo y de Enrique IV, en cuya conversión al catolicismo intervino decisivamente, siendo conocido vulgarmente por los parisinos como «el Papa de Les Halles». Fue igualmente un prolífico autor de escritos polémicos y la controversia rodeó permanentemente sus actividades. Todas sus obras son bibliográficamente raras. Edition originale de cette reimpression tiree a 100 exemplaires numerotes (96 Hollande, 4 Chine et de Peau de Velin). N°59 sur Hollande. §Demi Maroquin rouge d'epoque a coins signe Cuzin. Dos a nerfs richement orne. Filets sur les plats. Tete doree. Bel exemplaire. §Reimpression textuelle fait sur l'edition de Paris de 1576 de cette fable rabelaisienne qui conte les voyages de Bringuenarille. La bouteille fait reference a la Dive bouteille. L'oeuvre fut attribuee a Rabelais plusieurs fois, mais elle n'a finalement pas ete retenue dans ses oeuvres, faute de preuve reelle. Son auteur reste inconnu. Maistre hambrelin est une fable en vers. Les editions du XVIe de la Navigation (une seule portant ce titre, celle choisie pour la reimpression) sont excessivement rares, d'ou l'importance de cette edition ancienne et prefacee. §Photos sur www.Edition-originale.com. L'edition originale de la Republique date de 1576 et fut reeditee maintes fois au cours des annees suivantes. La seconde partie possede sa propre page de titre. Le dernier feuillet est restaure en marge droite. Brunet I : 'Bodin est lui-meme l'auteur de l'apologie...' §Demi Basane posterieure, coiffes restaurees (larges traces de restauration). §Livre fondamental de Jean Bodin (1530-1596), juriste, c'est aussi un livre fondamental pour l'histoire de la politique qui rompt avec la tradition aristotelicienne et philosophique du droit selon la force et assoit sur ses bases l'etat moderne? C'est par ailleurs au XVIe que l'etat devient une entite generale notamment avec les reflexions theoriques de Machiavel 1513) mais seul Bodin fait reposer l'etat sur la notion essentielle de souverainete, c'est elle, une et indivisible, qui constitue pour Bodin le critere de discrimination des gouvernements. Bodin fut un eminent juriste, homme encyclopediste de son temps, il participa aux querelles religieuses et se rangea du cote du roi (inalienabilite des biens de la couronne) et de la politique, mais pronera une reconnaissance des deux religions. Anvers Plantin 1576 - 2 parties en un volume in-folio de 671 pp.ch. (titre compris) pour la première partie ; 2 ff.n.ch., 471, 15, 24 pp.ch., 8 ff.n.ch. (table des noms en allemand) pour la seconde partie ; veau brun sur ais de bois, dos à nerfs, plats ornés de bordures à froid avec décor végétal et petits portraits en médaillon (reliure de l'époque). Pritzel, 5548 ; Nissen, BBI, 1218 ; Cat. Prélinnéens, 67 ; Hunt, 126-127 ; Voet, III, 1578 ; Wellcome, 3828 ; NLM, 2827 ; pas dans Waller ; Arents, pp. 237-242. Édition originale pour la première partie, remise en vente pour la seconde. La première section du volume contient l'Histoire des plantes du médecin et botaniste flamand d'origine française Mathias de L'Obel ou Lobel (en latin Lobelius), né à Lille en 1538 et mort à Highgate (Londres) en 1616. La seconde, intitulée Nova stirpium adversaria, renferme des textes de L'Obel, du médecin et botaniste français Pierre Pena (v. 1535-1605) et de Guillaume Rondelet (1507-1566). Elle fut d'abord publiée à Londres, chez Thomas Purfoot, en 1570-71. Plantin en racheta le stock, changea la page de titre, ajouta un index, l'appendice de L'Obel, le Formulae remediorum de Rondelet (qui occupent 15 ff.ch. à la fin du volume) et la remit en vente à la suite de la Plantarum seu stirpium historia de L'Obel. Cette partie, ici dans la variante B décrite par Voet, comporte en plus une table des noms en allemand (8 ff.n.ch.). L'ouvrage répertorie 1300 plantes traitées selon leur morphologie, leurs qualités médicales et leurs usages. Il est illustré de 2 titres gravés avec encadrement architectural et de 1441 figures dans le texte, le tout gravé sur bois. La figure de la page 252 de la deuxième partie, contrecollée lors de la première publication, constitue la première représentation imprimée de la plante du tabac (Nicotiana Tabacum). Notre exemplaire contient un autre bois contrecollé (I, p. 133 : Solanum hortense). Mathias de L'Obel, médecin de Guillaume le Silencieux, émigra en Angleterre vers 1569 en même temps que son ami Pierre Pena. Il fut chargé de superviser les jardins de Lord Zouche à Hackney, puis devint botaniste de Jacques Ier. "His system of describing plants, based on leaf form, was much in advance of the systems used by contemporary botanists" (Hunt). Quant à Pierre Pena, il délaissa la botanique et, rentré en France, devint le médecin de Louis XIII. Annotations anciennes dans la marge de quelques feuillets ; taches et auréoles éparses ; petit trou p. 260 avec légère atteinte à l'imprimé ; reliure restaurée, dos et fermoirs renouvelés. Occasional early annotations, interior otherwise clean. * Second edition. Sir Robert Brooke was renowned for his great learning and probity as a judge. His Abridgement is based on Fitzherbert's Abridgement, but it contains much new material. In all, Brooke abridged nearly 21,000 cases and digested them alphabetically under 404 headings. It abridges fully the Year Books of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Brooke proceeded with great care and accuracy, and is believed to have had access to the original records of the Year Books. Coke calls the Abridgement "a worthy and painful work and an excellent repertory or table for the Year Books of the Law." Sir Frederick Pollock [1845-1937] was one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Maitland on The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I and his correspondence with Oliver Wendell Holmes, which was published posthumously as The Holmes-Pollock Letters. FIRST EDITION of the first comprehensive treatise on proper Portuguese spelling, and only the second published study of any aspect of the Portuguese language, preceded by Fernão de Oliveira's Portuguese grammar of 1536 (see Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa, 9th ed., p. 25). It can be seen as part of the widespread effort in the sixteenth century to standardize the orthography of vernaculars. Duarte Nunes de Lião, historian, philologist, geographer, and jurisconsult (ca. 1530-1608), was born at Évora and studied civil law at Coimbra. He eventually rose to the position of judge of the Casa da Supplicação (court of appeals). Ce petit traité de la syphilis et des moyens d'en guérir est l'œuvre de Guillaume Rondelet (1507-1566), célèbre médecin, anatomiste et naturaliste français à qui l'on doit l'un des plus importants ouvrages anciens sur les poissons (Lyon, 1554-1555). Après avoir étudié les humanités à Paris, Rondelet intégra la faculté de médecine de Montpellier, où il fit la connaissance de Rabelais (qui l'aurait immortalisé sous les traits du docteur Rondibilis dans le Tiers Livre). Il exerça ensuite la profession de médecin et de maître d'école à Pertuis (Vaucluse), étudia l'anatomie avec Johannes Guinter à Paris, pratiqua quelques temps à Maringues (Puy de Dôme) et s'installa enfin définitivement à Montpellier, où il enseigna l'anatomie et créa le premier jardin botanique français. Esprit universel et curieux de tout, on lui a prêté des sentiments calvinistes que semblent contredire son goût pour la musique et ses penchants pour la table. Joubert, qui a publié sa biographie, nous a légué l'image d'un illustre savant et d'un grand jouisseur, rabelaisien dans le sens le plus noble et universaliste du terme. Le traducteur de l'ouvrage, Étienne Maniald (vers 1535-1599), professeur de médecine à Bordeaux, fut l'un des plus célèbres anatomistes et dissecteurs de son temps. Bel exemplaire, sobrement relié. This is one of a very few sixteenth-century illustrated books with original colouring by a known artist, in this case a major figure in the highly erudite and sophisticated court of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. This is the only known example of his illuminations of a printed book. Hoefnagel, born in Antwerp in 1542, was a friend of this volumeís publisher, Christoper Plantin. He left Antwerp in 1577 in the company of the great mapmaker Abraham Ortelius (whose publisher Plantin also was), and it was in the course of their travels to Italy that they met the great collectors Marx Fugger and Adolph Occo, who introduced them to Albert V, Duke of Bavaria. Albert, upon seeing portraits and a painting on vellum by Hoefnagel, engaged him as his court artist. Hoefnagel was employed as court painter from 1578 to 1591 for the Munich court of the Dukes of Bavaria (first for Albert, then for his son Wilhelm who succeeded him), after which he worked for The Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in Frankfurt and Vienna. ëThe conditions of Hoefnagelís service to the Munich court differed significantly from those of other court painters such as Friedrich Sustris and Peter Candid. Probably on the basis of his own request, he was granted the freedom to pursue interests not directly related to his duties. His average annual salary of 15 gilders, when compared with the 200 to 350 gilders granted to other court painters, indicates that he was probably concerned less with money than with the security the post offered. Under the courtís protection, he was able to pursue his activities unhindered by city regulations and guild rules. He worked for the entire court - for the duke; his brother, Ferdinand; and other distinguished patrons, who paid him separately. The most important project of this period was the illumination of a Roman missal between 1581 and 1590 for Ferdinand of Tyrol, uncle of Duke William V of Bavariaí (Thea Vignau-Wilberg, ëJoris Hoefnagel, The Illuminatorí in Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta). Hoefnagel is known to have been a regular reader in the ducal library during his period as court painter (cf. O. Hartig, ëDie Gründung der Müncher Hofbibliothek durch Albrecht V and Johann Jakob Fuggerí, Abhandlungen der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 28, 1917). Hoefnagel was the creator of ëEuropeís last great illuminated manuscriptí, the Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta (now in the Getty Museum), originally a calligraphical manuscript by the master calligrapher Georg Bocskay, imperial secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. This manuscript is a virtuoso tour-de-force, demonstrating the superiority of the written word and Bocskayís skills as calligrapher. Some 30 years later Hoefnagel was commissioned by Ferdinandís grandson, Rudolf II, to illuminate it, and Hoefnagel took the occasion to turn the work into a contest between the written and visual, with the pictorial portion clearly winning the laurels. Botanical images feature significantly in the manuscript, ëwhich is distinctive among his manuscripts for its extensive illustrations of the plant worldí. Interestingly, Hoefnagel was closely connected to the Plantin press and its circle of Antwerp scholars and botanists, such as Charles lí…cluse, and his illumination of this herbal demonstrates his early familiarity with botanical subjects. Hoefnagel was responsible for other manuscript illuminations, as well as the breathtaking manuscript, also created for Rudolf II, of the Four Elements (now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington). FIRST EDITION of the first comprehensive treatise on proper Portuguese spelling, and only the second published study of any aspect of the Portuguese language, preceded by Fernão de Oliveira's Portuguese grammar of 1536 (see Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa, 9th ed., p. 25). It can be seen as part of the widespread effort in the sixteenth century to standardize the orthography of vernaculars. Duarte Nunes de Lião, historian, philologist, geographer, and jurisconsult (ca. 1530-1608), was born at Évora and studied civil law at Coimbra. He eventually rose to the position of judge of the Casa da Supplicação (court of appeals). His many other published works include the @Repertorio dos cinquo livros das ordenacões (Lisbon, 1560), an important summary of Portuguese laws (updated by his @Leis extravagantes, Lisbon, 1569), @Chronicas dos Reis de Portugal (Lisbon, 1600), @Origem da lingoa portuguesa (Lisbon, 1606), and @Decripção do Reino de Portugal (Lisbon, 1610). Las Siete Partidas, es considerado el código legislativo mas importante de toda la edad media y la mayor compilación legislativa desde la época romana. En 1251 Alfonso X, El Sabio (1252-1284), encargo a un grupo de juristas que cumplieran la reforma legislativa ideada por su padre Fernando III. Se pretendía reemplazar Forum Judicum visigodo (Fuero Juzgo, de Asturias y León) así como la gran cantidad de fueros locales y usos costumbres de Castilla. Sin embargo el nuevo código no se aplica hasta 1348 en Castilla y con muchas reservas, de ahí se expande por el resto de España y sus posesiones en Filipinas, Puerto rico, Florida y Luisiana. Seltene erste Sammelausgabe von sieben Traktaten des Paracelsus, u.a. auch Begründer der allgemeinen und speziellen Balneologie. Ediert wurde das Buch von dem aus Unterfranken stammenden Arzt und Paracelsus-Schüler Adam von Bodenstein (1528-1577), der sich seit 1560 für die Verbreitung paracelsischer Schriften einsetzte und deshalb 1564 aus dem Basler Concilium facultatis medicae ausgeschlossen wurde. Für Paracelsus waren vor allem die Ideen von der Entstehung der Heilwasser als Akt der Naturerkenntnis von Bedeutung und er ist denn auch der erste, der die Wasser unter diesem Aspekt abhandelte. Bei seiner Besprechung der einzelnen Bäder, nebst schweizerischen auch deutsche, österreichische sowie ein französisches, gibt er Inhalt und Heilwirkung des Wassers an. Als Besonderheit finden sich bei ihm auch der Vergleich eines jeden Wassers mit einem Heilkraut, mit dem es die gleichen Tugenden teilt. Paracelsus bietet auch erstmals Rezepte, wie die Wasser bei bestimmten Krankheiten durch Zusätze zu verbessern seien. Wie schon sein Vorgänger Lorenz Fries in seinem Tractat der Wildbeder natuer, wirckung und eigentschafft von 1519, wird das Trinken und die Sauerbrunnen von Paracelsus nur nebenbei erwähnt. - Ein sauberes Exemplar. First collected edition of the seven tracts on balneology by the Swiss physician who is honored as the real father of balneology, edited by the paracelsist and physician Adam von Bodenstein (1528-1577). His theoretical ideas baout the effects of bathing are in part very modern, other originate from medieval alchemist sources. He used this theory of 'Separatio' of the three basal elements sculphur, mercurius, and sal, as well as the idea of the 'light of Nature', but beyond that he discussed also influences of personified forces, which he assumed in nymphs, melusins, and others. Furthermore, in his balneology Paracelsus expressed clearly his doctrine about the macro- and microcosmic relation, and he used in his balneotherapy vegetable and mineral compounds up to precious stones. Time, too, had a special importance for the effectiveness of the bath in his eyes. In contrast to the Galenic idea about catharsis as a cleaning process according to the doctrine of the four humours, the Swiss physician introduced in first line vitalizing factors, also called 'Brunnengeister' into the discussion, thus giving special importance to his doctrine about the four 'Entien'. This edition is based on the revised and corrected second edition of 1563 of the "Baderbüchlin" published first at Mulhouse in 1562. On p. 65 follows the reissue of the first German edition of 1571 of the notoriously rare monograph on the mineral springs of Bad Pfäfers in Switzerland, first printed by Froschauer at Zurich in 1535. It offers descriptions of Swiss, German, and French Spas. Bodenstein's postscript is dated "Bartholomey" [i.e. 24 August] 1576". - Some light waterstains. - Modern boards. Al frontespizio marca tipografica incisa su legno raffigurante un serpente che si erge da una pietra variegata e, in alto, il sole, il tutto entro cornice ovale affiancata da putti che reca il motto: ‘In frigido frigidus ardens’. Alla c. E2r diagramma silografico, al verso della stessa carta grande stemma nobiliare inciso su legno. Alla carta F4v incisione silografica a piena pagina raffigurante l’albero genealogico del Bartoli. Numerose iniziali silografiche animate e ornate nel testo. Legatura in pergamena coeva con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione. Qualche macchia e qualche fioritura al frontespizio e alle prime carte. Al frontespizio nota di possesso in inchiostro marrone, probabilmente di mano seicentesca, ‘Philippus Meniconius’. Prima ed unica edizione di questa biografia di uno dei più celebri giuristi europei del xiv secolo - Bartolo da Sassoferrato (1314-1357) – che fu discepolo di Raniero Arsendi da Forlì e di Cino da Pistoia e il maggiore esponente di quella scuola giuridica che fu definita dei commentatori (o post-glossatori). La venerazione delle successive generazioni di studenti del diritto è dimostrata dall’adagio: nemo íurista nisi bartolista, non può essere un buon giurista chi non sia un bartolista. Si ricorda che Bartolo e la sua scuola elaborarono i fondamenti giuridici dell’autonomia politica delle repubbliche cittadine e della cittadinanza, oltre al significativo contributo alla nozione di politica intesa come saggezza civile. L’opera venne redatta dal perugino Giovanni Lancellotti, che insegnò diritto civile e canonico all’Università di Perugia e che fu tra i fondatori dell’Accademia musicale degli Unisoni e membro dell’Accademia letteraria degli Insensati. First and only edition of the biography of one of the most popular european lawyers of the 14th century – Bartolo of Sassoferrato (1314-1357) – who had been a pupil of Raniero Arsendi and Cino da Pistoia. This account was written by the lawyer and writer Giovanni Lancellotti, who teached canonical and civil right at the University of Perusia and was a member of the musical academy of the ‘Unisoni’. Der niederländische Kartäuser Dionysius (Denis Rikel, Denis le Chartreux) , aufgrund seiner häufigen visionären Zustände "doctor exstaticus" genannt, gilt zugleich als "der letzte Scholastiker" (gest. 1471 in Roermond). In strengster Askese schuf er ein Lebenswerk, das "den Ertrag der mittelalterlichen Mystik, Exegese und Scholastik zusammenfasste. Von ihm wurde gesagt: "Qui Dionysium legit, nihil non legit" (RGG II, 202). Selten! Nicht in Worldcat.

La Ligue catholique ou Sainte Ligue ou Sainte Union designe un regroupement de catholiques, cree en Picardie, en 1576. Ce parti ultra-catholique est appuye par le pape Sixte V, les Jesuites, et Philippe II d'Espagne. Forme en reaction aux edits de Saint-Germain (1570) et de Beaulieu (6 mai 1576) juges trop favorables aux protestants, la Ligue parvient en 1588 a chasser le roi Henri III de la capitale, mais decline devant les victoires d'Henri IV. Elle constitua un des plus grands dangers que connut la monarchie francaise avant l'avenement de l'absolutisme. Un siecle plus tard, les acteurs de la Fronde s'inspirent de la Ligue, comme modele ou repoussoir. "L'esprit de la ligue le meilleur ouvrage de l'auteur a paru pour la premiere fois en 1767 ; mais l'edition de 1771 en 3 vol. in-12 est preferable parce que le catalogue des ouvrages cites y a recu de nombreuses corrections communiquees par le P. Mercier depuis abbe de St-Leger" (Brunet, I, 302). C'est un ouvrage de reference sur l'histoire des guerres de religion en France, de Charles XI a d'Henri IV. Bel exemplaire, coins tres leg. emouss.

Rare, comme toutes les editions. Absent de la BNF et des catalogues francais (exception d'une edition a Lyon de 1586), comme de nombreuses bibliotheques. Brunet donne 1499 comme la date de l'originale V, 1135. le Gregoire donne 1571 pour la premiere edition?? §Cartonnage a papier brique XVIIIeme ou debut XIXeme, encre du titre estompee et illisible. §Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) est ne et mort a Urbino, apres avoir etudie a Bologne et Padoue, il devint le secretaire du duc d'Urbino et le chambellan d'Alexandre VI. Ses deux premiers ecrits le rendirent celebres et obtinrent une grande popularite 'Proverbiorum libellus' et 'De inventoribus rerum', traduite en francais par 'Les inventeurs des choses'. En 1501 le pape l'envoya en Angleterre, devenant l'intime de Henri VII, ce dernier lui commanda une histoire d'Angleterre par lequel Polydore devint le premier historien moderne, ne se contentant pas d'etablir une simple chronique mais etudiant les evenements, ainsi il influenca tous les historiens futurs et meme shakespeare dans sa vision de l'histoire. Il revint dans son pays natal lors des changements religieux en Angleterre. Le livre est aussi une histoire de la medecine et de la magie. Polydore Vergil a naturellement abondamment puise dans les Anciens. It was an alliance of the provinces of the Habsburg Netherlands for the purpose of driving mutinying Spanish mercenary troops from the country, and at the same time a peace treaty with the rebelling provinces Holland and Zeeland. Various issues of this pamphlet appeared in 1578, the first being printed in Brussels y Michiel van Hamont (Knuttel 260). Plates are sporadic in their condition, some being fairly fresh, and others exhibiting soiling and or foxing This description is compiled from sources found on the internet in 2009. Chacon's suite of engravings of Trajan's column constitutes one of the greatest and most ambitious illustrated books of the Renaissance. The plates for the engravings are the work of Raphael and his pupils Giulio Romano and Giovanni Polydoro, or The text was written by the Spanish archaeologist Alfonso Ciacon; the engravings were made by Francesco Villamena who followed in part previous engravings made by Giulio Romano, Raphael's foremost pupil. Trajan's column was erected in 114 to commemorate his victories against the Dacians and has a spiral band containing over 200 meters of bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the campaigns. Its high quality as well as its prominent location at the focal point of Trajan's Forum made it one of the best known ancient monuments in Rome. In addition to 130 plates reproducing the scenes from the column, Chacon has included in this publication two fold-out engravings of the entire column with interior and exterior views and floor plans. Their was accompanying explanatory text, in a much smaller format, which is missing from this volume, as is the title page, two folding plates and plates 1, 2 and 3. Sold as an attributable collection of plates. Leather covered boards (both are off). 127 (of 130) engravings.

Anvers. Plantin, 1576. In folio (30/20cm), 472 pp.-15-24 + tables en diverses langues. Demi basane blonde, dos lisse orne de filets dores, piece de titre rouge (une coiffe un peu usee). Reliure XIXeme. Illustre de 320 figures gravees sur bois. C'est l'ouvrage le plus important de L'Obel. Avec l'aide d'un jeune medecin francais Pierre Pena, Il s'efforca de classer les vegetaux.On remarque une ebauche des familles naturelles, ainsi les gramens, les orchis, les palmiers, les mousses y sont deja separes comme ils le furent plus tard. Les Labiees, les personnees, les ombelliferes y sont deja rapproches les unes des autres, mais beaucoup d'autres plantes sont encore melangees. Chaque section est precedee d'un tableau synoptique de classement des plantes. cette classification naissante apporta la celebrite a De l'Obel (source : livres de fleurs du XVIeme siecle de la collection Plantin par A.M. Bogaert-Damin et J. Piron). Bel exemplaire a grandes marges et sans annotations bien complet de son beau titre frontispice et des 2 pages supplementaires contenant 12 figures.

(Reliure du XVIIIe siecle.) 8 ff. n. ch., 400 pp. iDITION ORIGINALE dediee a Jerome de Chastillon, president au Parlement de Lyon et datee - e Grieriana nostra villa - fevrier1576. "Savante et instructive, cette piece de 9 pages est une sorte d'introduction a l'ouvrage, et non pas, ce qui n'est que trop frequent, un fade et oiseux panegyrique de quelque insignifiant Mecene" dit Renouard. Cet ouvrage est le premier de la trilogie dans laquelle Estienne s'attaque a la mode "ciceronienne". Le style ciceronien etait devenu au XVIe siecle, une veritable superstition litteraire, tout le monde "ciceronait" bien ou mal et les plus mediocres imitateurs meprisaient toute latinite qui n'avait pas cette teinture. On publiait des dictionnaires ciceroniens, des syntaxes ciceroniennes toutes faite a l'usage des neo-latinistes. C'est contre toute cette mode que Henri Estienne s'eleve ici en stigmatisant le ridicule de tous "ces intolerants singes de Ciceron" qui non contents de ne l'etudier que dans un dictionnaire, oublient tous les autres grands auteurs de l'antiquite latine. -Renouard, 144 - Schreiber 198 - Cioranesco 9636 - Moekli 86 - Exemplaire provenant de la bibliotheque du Marquis d'Aligre (ex-libris.) Ne a Paris en 1726 dans une famille qui compta deux chanceliers, il fut nomme President du Parlement en 1768. Il fit plusieurs fois des remontrances au roi contre les impots et contre les operations ministerielles subversives. En 1788, en presence de Necker, il lut un memoire au roi dans lequel il pronostiquait les malheurs qui, selon lui, decouleraient de la convocation des itats-Generaux. N'ayant pas ete ecoute par le roi, d'Aligre demissionna du Parlement. Le jour de la prise de la Bastille il fut arrete mais put s'echapper grace a un de ses anciens domestiques. Il emigra a Londres ou l'attendait une fortune placee dans une banque anglaise. Il mourut en 1798 a Brunswick, laissant une fortune colossale a ses deux enfants.
