(Reliure de l'époque). Lestringant, André Thevet, p. 374-376, n° 14; Sabin 95335; Atkinson 249n; Borba de Moraes II, pp. 859-860; Arents, I, 8 & 21; Adams T/623; Mortimer French, 517; JCB (3) I:261; Brun p. 312 (titre à l'adresse de G. Chaudière); Alden, 575/32. Mortimer commente : "Thevet, much maligned by his contemporaries for his inaccuracies and exaggerations, solicited as royal cosmographer an impressive array of commendatory verses for these two volumes". On the verso of the leaf 908 is a plate of Guanabara Bay and on leaf 925 a dominical prayer in Tupi (.) The Brazilian section of the Cosmographie is very important ; in a sense it is more complete than the Singularitez. The description of the Indians' attire, the informations about the Tupinambá, their beliefs, etc., are much more complete and among the best existing. The Singularitez was published immediately after Thevet returned to France in 1557, and the Cosmographie appeared only in 1575, which afforded him more time to deliberate on the matter and perhaps to consult people who knew Brazil better. Ferdinand Denis, who based his information on a letter from Richer, claims that Thevet consulted Villegagnon. On reading the Cosmographie one does not gain the impression that Thevet 'lied cosmographically' in the words of Jean de Léry".
FIRST EDITION. 4to. [xvi], 111, [1] pp. Woodcut printer's device on title, full-page woodcut portrait of author facing impressive full-page woodcut coat-of-arms. With 20 text woodcuts, including illustrations of instruments, and 3 tables. Nineteenth-century vellum; small repairs to title-page and to lower corner of coat-of-arms. First edition of this extremely rare treatise, the first work printed in France on navigation and one of the earliest attempts to determine longitude at sea. As a mathematician and instrument-maker, Bessard believed this could be accomplished by fixing one's position vis-a-vis the stars; his instruments, which are illustrated here, support this conclusion. Notwithstanding, he was well aware of the needs of seamen, and his methods for determining longitude at sea were successfully followed by navigators and seamen. An early description of South America is also included, undoubtedly drawn from Bessard's first hand experience. Bessard (also Bossard), born in Putot-en-Auge, became an accomplished mathematician and designer of navigational instruments, publishing in 1572 L'aigle-compas de T. de Bessard, d'auge en Normandie. However, most of his life was passionately spent in travel, both at sea and by land, and Bessard is remembered as one of the most renowned voyagers in sixteenth-century France. We could locate only three other copies of this work: British Library (STC-French, 51), the Bibliotheque Nationale (12,647) and the Crone Collection of the Scheepvaart, the Dutch Maritime Museum (Crone Library, 77), which copy appears incomplete.

Series of 18 extremely rare and exquisitely executed engravings in the first state by one of the most famous Flamish engravers of the 16th century. The first 17 engravings (title and series of 16) depict the Passion of Christ. Though rather small the engravings are very detailed from the aspects of clothing, expressions, shadows and light, backgrounds, like villages and buildings, and other ornamental details. On many of them the somewhat grotesque figures can be seen, which are so characteristic for the Flamish school. The 18th engraving is extra and added before the last engraving of the series and depicts a detailed scene of Christ bearing his cross while under a large (book)press. All engravings have a caption in Latin. They are cut with a small margin around the frame, except for the title which is cut directly around the frame, and mounted on strong paper, with a blank leave between each engraving.Wierix (1553-1619) was together with his 2 brothers Antoine and Johan one of the greatest flamish artists of the 16th century and their work takes a considerable place in the artistical history of that age. Maurolico, Francesco, OSB.
Opuscula mathematica.
Venedig, Francesco de Franceschi, 1575. (20), 285, (1) SS., l. w. Bl. Mit Holzschnittdruckermarke am Titel und zahlr. Textholzschnitten. (Dabei) Ders. Arithmethicorum libri duo. Ebd., 1575. (8), 175, (15) SS., l. w. Bl. "Only a few of his works were printed, although these are enough to show him as an outstanding scholar" (DSB). "Shows considerable originality in the treatment of figurate numbers" (Smith). Edit 16, CNCE 28131. Smith 348 und 350. Riccardi I (2), 141. Adams M 919. BM-STC Italian 428. DSB IX, 191. Kat. Dt. Museum, Libri rari, 186. Honeyman 2182. Gessner, C.
(The complete Gesner, all in early editions).
      - Zürich, Froschauer, 1575-1589. Five books in two. Folio (38.5 x 23.5 cm) text with about 1,275 fine woodcuts in the text (several full page). Good recent calf binding in old style with new flyleaves. *A very good set of the German language edition of Gesner's animal omnibus. These volumes are all early imprints. The Historiae animalium first appeared in 4 folio volumes printed in Zurich by Christoffel Froschouwer. A German translation, also printed by Froschouwer, followed in 1563 and was reprinted several times. This set contains the following: Thierbüch (1583, 3rd); Vogelbüch (1582, 3rd); Fischbüch (1575, 2nd); Schlangenbüch (1589, 1st); De Scorpione (1589, 1st). The Fischbüch contains invertebrates as well, including many Mollusca. It is rare to see such a mixed set. This important work may be seen as the starting point of modern zoology. The first few leaves of the Thierbuch have been restored in the lower corner and there is a little thumbing in corners as usual in all 5 books. A few repaired tears and a vague library stamp on 2 titles. Some handwritten notes in an old hand. In the "Vogelbuch" several marginal annotations in an old hand, the last 40 ll. have a large waterstain. In all a very good and collectible set with broad margins and strong imprint of the woodcuts. Nissen ZBI, 1552, 1555, 1557; Nissen IVB, 350.

Gessner, C.
(The complete Gesner, all in early editions).
Zürich, Froschauer, 1575-1589.

FURMER, Bernard G. (=Dirck Volkertsz
Embarrassment of riches Emblematum liber.
Antwerp, Chr. Plantin, 1575. . 4to. Contemporary vellum. Motto in Latin on the title within fine ornamental borders and 25 large numbered engraved emblems by Wiericx, one signed I.H.W. 27, (1 blank) lvs. . First edition of a rare and most beautiful emblem book on the use and abuse of riches. The fine artistic engravings were produced in the atelier of the talented Wierix brothers who were among the most prolific printmakers in the Low Countries of their time after the designs by Gerard Groenning. In their long association with Plantin they contributed engravings to many of his important productions. The emblems all centre on humans engaged in rich and sumptuous scenes of dinner and drinking parties, money transactions, scenes of elegant and luxurious life, etc., with a strong architectural background, but they also include a fine emblem on a farmer working in the cornfield and a woman offering him food while another woman is bending over her purse. The last emblem presents a lively scene of the Last Judgment. All emblems have a caption and quotation from the bible above and a four-line Latin verse underneath. The explanatory Latin text is printed on the opposite pages. Only the second emblem has the monogram I.H.W. of Joannes Wierix, on the other plates monograms must have been erased according to Mauquoy-Hendrickx because of Joannes's and Hieronymus' sympathy with the protestants. The publication was a joint venture of Christopher Plantin and Phillip Galle, each taking 250 copies and sharing expenses. The text is by the famous Dutch humanist and - with respect to religion - controversal Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590) and was published just before he returned to Holland from exile in 1576. He settled in Haarlem again in 1577. Coornhert was befriended with Hendrik Niclaes and other members of the "Huis der Liefde' in Antwerp and the moral issues discussed in De rerum usu et abusu are entirely in keeping with Coornhert's opinions. Probably to avoid potential conflicts with the authorities on account of publishing a work of an author in exile, Galle and Plantin issued the book under the name of the Frisian humanist Bernard Furmer(ius) (1542-1616), born at Leeuwarden in the Northern Netherlands, and historiographer of the States of Friesland since 1597. A Dutch translation under the title Recht ghebruyck ende misbruyck van tydlycke have was published by Plantin at his Leyden office in 1585. An adaptation in Latin by Richard Lubbaeus was published by Johan Jansonius at Arnhem in 1609. The book is of the utmost rarity. Fine copy, with the book plate of Sylvain S. Brunschwig.- (Title sl. dam. at inner margin because of having been pasted to the opposite blank, and with small tear in lower margin). M. Sellink, Philips Galle, I, p. 96-97; H. Puhlmann, De rerum usu et abusu (Antwerpen 1575).
La Ville, Cité, Université, et Fauxbourgs de Paris From Cosmographie Universelle
      M. Sonnius, Paris 1575 A MAGNIFICENT 16TH-CENTURY VIEW OF PARIS Woodcut: paper size 165/8" x 221/2" In 1544, the important German scholar and geographer Sebastian Munster published his landmark work on the universe. Entitled the "Cosmographia," it was a 16th century best-seller which was re-issued over many years. In 1575, the Paris publisher François de Belle-Forest issued a French edition of the work which contained this large-scale woodcut view of Paris. Rather than reproducing Munster's view of the city, Belle-Forest compiled and engraved this much larger scale, more detailed and embellished version, based on his own profound knowledge of the city, its layout and monuments. Munster's much more schematic view, which did not, for example, include a monument of such prominence as the cathedral of Nôtre-Dame, was superseded by Belle-Forest's magnificent rendering. The view gives an excellent understanding of Paris as it appeared in the late 16th century, and it identifies and lists more than a hundred notable sites, including churches, streets, plazas, bridges, notable buildings, and city gates. Among these are the Bastille, then a prison; the Louvre, then a recently inaugurated palace of relatively humble dimensions; the Sorbonne; Nôtre-Dame; Montmartre; St. Sulpice; and many more. The urban developments of Henri IV, such as the building of the Pont-Neuf and the creation of open public spaces like the Place des Vosges and the Place Dauphine, were still several decades away (not to mention the extensive changes to the urban fabric that were to take place under Baron Hausmann in the 19th century, with the imposition of a sweeping system of broad boulevards). Belle-Forest's view is one of the best records of Paris as it was in the Renaissance, before the successive campaigns of urban development would profoundly transform the city into the form it assumes today. Belle-Forest's view is of considerable rarity, and this example is in particularly good condition.

Pagninus
Sir Thomas Peckitt's Personal Copy: Hebrew Grammar: Thesaurus Linguæ Sanctæ
LUGDUNI, 1575. Very Good+ in None jacket Latin, Hebrew. Elephant Folio-over 15"-23" tall. ROYAL FOLIO. PRINTED 1575. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HEBREW GRAMMARS EVER COMPILED AND AT THE DISPOSAL OF THE TRANSLATORS OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE From the esteemed 18th century library of Thomas Peckitt, himself the author of Hebrew Grammar and other theological works, with his fine bookplate and signature. It should be noted that this is a very important volume in the Biblical Studies; The Trinitarian Bible Society in their April-June 1979 Quarterly Record cites this volume as being at the disposal of the translators for the KING JAMES BIBLE. The Book: Pagninus, "Thesaurus Linguæ Sanctæ", Lugduni, 1575. Large Folio Orginal soft calf with blindstamping, sympathetically rebacked, internally clean. From the famed library of Henry Peckitt, well known 18th century scriptural scholar with his siganture and handsome bookplate. Pagninus was perhaps the greatest of Christian Lexicographers and whose work was fundamental as an aid to 16th-century scriptural translators. A highly important work, only one copy of this 1575 edition in 30 years of auction records and that copy was a very poor one lacking a leaf. (A Finer 1548 Edition of this work Christies June 26, 1996, lot 113 $9240.00) As a measure if Pagninus' importance, it should be noted that that the first printed Bible divided into verses was an Old Testament Latin edition by Pagninus.

ERASMUS
[Bound with]: HUTTEN (Ulrich von). [Greek title]: OUTIS. Nemo. Augsburg, in officina Millerana, 9 Sep. [1518]. [and]: BURLEY (Walter). Strassburg, Joannes Knobloch, June
Title-page of Erasmus printed within superb historiated woodcut border which shows two jesters, architectural columns, and two putti holding a shield with the initials "M. S."; title of Hutten with superb full-page woodcut (160 x 112mm.) by Hans Weiditz, the Petrarch Master.3 works in one vol. [6], LXXIII, [5]ff.; [12]ff.; [8], LII ff. 16th century blind-panelled pigskin with outer historiated roll with initials "HW" (see Haebler I, pp. 486/8) and inner ornamental one, stamped" SKE 1575" on upper cover (covers rubbed and soiled). 1516. I. An early edition of De duplici copia. Erasmus was working for a number of years on a treatise on Latin composition, begun while in Italy, but completed only in 1512 during his third stay in England at the request of John Colet for use in the latter's newly founded school in St. Paul's churchyard. This treatise was designed to help the young student in acquiring an elegant and copious style and to provide abundant examples of how to say the same thing in different ways. It was first printed in Paris by Badius in 1512, but was soon reprinted several times, becoming a standard textbook in schools throught Western Europe. This edition contains Erasmus' long letter to the Alsatian humanist Jakob Wimpfeling (1450-1528), dated 21 September 1514, in which he relates his previous journey to Basle, mentioning all the humanist scholars he had met from Alsace and Basle, where Erasmus had just taken up residence. Erasmus had first become acquainted with Wimpheling in August 1514 when he stopped in Strassburg on his way to Basle, and was officially welcomed by the members of the recently founded literary society which included Sebastian Brant and Joannes Sturm. The work concludes with three poems by Erasmus addressed to Sebatian Brant, Joannes Sapidus and Thomas Didimus, together with the latter's reply.VD16 E2647. Knaake II, 144.II. The first printing of Hutten's revision of his first work Nemo I, (1510), a speech in verse with proverbs and puns on domestic matters, here enlarged by about 30 distichs. Also added is a long preface to Crotus Rubeanus in which Hutten attacks both theologians and lawyers while at the end is a letter to Julius Pflug concerning the Reuchlin controversy and mentioning among others, Erasmus and Melanchthon.Hans Weiditz's excellent woodcut is dominated by the figure of Nemo in the foreground as a bearded man in Roman military dress, with the boat of Ulysses behind him and to the left the figure of Polyphemus carrying a rock to the edge of the cliff. The area around Nemo's feet is littered with objects such as a jug, a ladle, a book, an upturned table, an axe, playing cards, a lute, a backgammon board and counters, and spectacles.Benzing, Hutten, 62. Musper, Petrarka Master .L7. Fairfax Murray 211.III. Important medieval treatise by the Englishman Walter Burley (1275-1345?), the first attempt in modern times to write a history of ancient philosophy, first published in Cologne in 1470. According to Sandys the work was marred by strange mistakes in matters of literary history with the two Plinies and the two Senecas treated as one, while Statius Caecilius was confused with Papinius Statius and Livy with Livius Andronicus. Not in Adams.

Elogia Virorum Bellica Virtute Illustrium
1575 STIMMER, Tobias. GIOVIO, Paolo. Elogia Virorum bellica virtute illustrium. [6], 391, [15] pp. Includes an architectural woodcut title-page, and 127 woodcut portraits, all by Tobias Stimmer, plus 10 borders without portraits. BOUND WITH: -----. Elogia Virorum literis illustrium. [12], 232 (i.e. 228), [4] pp. Includes an architectural woodcut title-page and 63 portraits. Folio, 325 x 210 mm, bound by Birdsall in nineteenth-century olive morocco, gilt, a.e.g. Basel: Petri Pernae, 1575. First Edition with the famous Stimmer portraits. Jakob Burckhardt describes these Stimmer woodcuts as "the first comprehensive and generally accessible source for the likeness of persons in whom the contemporary learned public was interested." The portraits themselves measure 110 x 85 mm, and are inset into large figurative ornamental frames, the whole measuring 160 x 150 mm. There are six different frames for the 200 portraits, one of them with a large figure of an American Indian. The printer, Peter Perna, commissioned the renowned Swiss artist to travel to Como and make the original portrait sketches based on models in Giovio's own collection. This museum was the most renowned portrait collection of the Renaissance. The biographies and portraits in the first work include a number of Sforza and Visconti dukes, Romulus, Hannibal, Alexander the Great, Tammerlane, Cosimo de'Medici, the explorers Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Cortez, the humanists Scanderberg and Scaliger, plus fine portraits of Henry VIII of England, James V of Scotland, François I of France, Charles V of Germany, and several portraits of Turkish rulers and emperors. The second work includes biographies and portraits of Petrarch, Boccaccio, Lorenzo de'Medici, Andreas Naugerius, Machiavelli, Sir Thomas More, Erasmus, and many others. Although the authors of the laudatory poems are not credited in the text proper, the "Index Poetarum" lists, i.a., Aldus Manutius, Bembo, Julius Gonzaga, Plantin, Ariosto, and other famous Renaissance scholars. Although this copy lacks the second preliminary leaf (A2), containing a 28-line dedication by the printer to Francesco I (Grand Duke of Tuscany), and a woodcut portrait of the author, this same woodcut reappears later in the volume, opposite page 1 of the Elogia Virorum literis illustrium. Interestingly, Houghton Library possesses two copies of the work, one with, and one without, the above mentioned leaf. A washed copy. Lipperheide 484. Adams G-644. Thöne, Stimmer 30-37. Ortelius, Abraham
Asiae Nova Descriptio
Antwerp, 1575 37 by 48.5 cm. Coloured; split of 5cm lower part centerfold. The rarer first plate of Ortelius' map of Asia, with "Farfana" capitalized in the lower right hand corner. One of only approximately 1575 copies printed from the first plate. An important depiction of the expansion of European power in the Far East. The map was based on Ortelius' own 1567 wall map of Asia, which drew on Gastaldi and Albufeda. The Indian subcontinent and Malaysian Peninsula are easily recognizable. Ceylon and Sumatra are correctly placed, though their shape leaves something to be desired. The Philippines are distorted and Japan is too far to the north and incorrectly oriented, with the embryonic outline of the three main islands and with the Rykus and Taiwan appearing as a tail of islands to the south of the archipelago. Cortazzi, plate 19; OAG, plate 10c; Broecke, Ortelius 7; Tibbetts (1978) map 34, p.48..

HERO (HERON) OF ALEXANDRIA - FOUNDATION
Spiritalium liber. A Federico Commandino Urbinate, ex Graeco, nuper in Latinum conversis. Cum Privilegio Gregorij XIII. Pont. Max.
Urbini, (D. Frisolini), 1575. Small 4to. Fine recent full vellum in old style with written title on back. Titlepage + 80 leaves (title unnumb. + F 1-80 with 4 leaves misnumb., e.g. F70 instead of 80). The dedicationleaf (unnumb.) after title missing. Text complete, fine and clean with broad margins. One large initial in woodcut and 89 large textillustrations in woodcut. First edition and the first printed work by Hero. It is Hero's main work, and it stimulated the interest and contributed substantially to the interest in pneumatics that arose suddenly in the late 16th century and led to the work of Toricelli and Boyle. The "Pneumatics" was not published in Greek until 1693. It is one of the major sources to our knowledge of the technics and mechanics of Antiquity, and the many hydraulic and mechanical inventions by Hero is here depicted for the first time in print. The work includes studies of pneumatics and mechanics and include 89 illustrations of different inventions, such as siphons, fountains, engines, an account of a small stationary steam-engine (whic is of the form now known as Avery's patent), the double-force pump etc., which "by the union of (compressed) air, earth, fire, and water, and the concurrence of.elementary principles., supply the most pressing wants of the human life, (or) produce amazement and alarm." The book describes many gadgets and magical tricks and includes the first suggestion of a steam engine (see f. 52). - Sarton, Introduction.Vol. I pp. 208 ff. - Adams H:369 - Poggendorff I: 1084.

References: STC 21601; ESTC S116438; Wellcome 5390; Durling 3838; Heirs of Hippocrates 77. Sixth edition in English listed in STC (first 1528), translated by Thomas Paynell (d. 1564?), The Latin verses of the Regimen itself, attributed to John of Milan (fl. 1100) are printed with a translation of the extensive commentary attributed to Arnoldus of Villanova (d. 1311), which forms the bulk of the book. John's poem, supposed to have been written while he was head of the medical school at Salerno, is a manual of diet, hygiene and simple therapeutics. For centuries it was memorised by physicians and after the invention of printing published in nearly 300 editions. Geoffrey Eatough in Oxford DNB writes of Paynell's translation: 'A "temperate and moderate diete prolongeth man's life" is the keynote for a survey of the properties of all foods and drink, of remedies as "for parbraykynge on the sea" and of the psychology of illness. It has a clear analytical table of contents with careful instructions on how to locate a page. It was reprinted throughout the century and as late as 1634. The success of this book caused his publisher Thomas Berthelet to prompt Paynell to translate Ulrich von Hutten's De morbo Gallico (1533).' Paynell was a canon of Merton Priory in Surrey. He was educated at St Mary's College, the Austin canons' college at Oxford.

STC 19476; Lowndes III, 1803; Graesse V, 170. As the title indicates this is an annotated dictionary of persons and places appearing in the Bible and it is one of the earliest such books in English. Tabitha for example is identified as a pious woman resuscitated by Peter. Hers is a Syrian name we are told the Hebrew equivalent being Dorcas the meaning being Dama in Latin and Deer in English. The name Elizabeth provokes a long digression as she is not only the mother of John the Baptist but the sovereign of England on whose ancestors the author expatiates and whom he extols in a Latin poem. The information is culled largely from the Biblia Polyglotta of Francisco Ximénez de Cisneros and the Dictionarium Theologicum of Joannes Arquerius. William Patten who appears in the records for the final time in 1580 was a cousin of Bishop Waynflete of Winchester. In 1548 Patten participated in the expedition into Scotland of the Duke of Somerset and his description of the campaign is the ultimate source of Holinshed's account. Subsequently he worked as a teller at the queen's exchequer in Westminster and served as a justice of the peace. The publisher R. Jugge is best known for producing the Bishops' Bible. Antverpia.
[Cologne ]. 1575 Double-page engraved bird's-eye plan, printed on two sheets, joined. Dimensions: 450 by 785mm. (17.5 by 31 inches). This breathtaking bird's-eye plan by Georg Hoefnagel shows his home-town of Antwerp, in Flanders, at the height of its splendour. Within impressive town walls are shown populated streets, bustling quaysides and numerous churches of varied styles, with the vast cathedral dominating the entire town. The town walls are seen heavily fortified with bastions and armaments, the arsenal is marked on the city's seaward side with the River Scheldt full of commercial and naval shipping. Hoefnagel was one of the main contributors to the Civitates . venture and displays his skill, as one of the finest topographical artists of the day, in this magnificent engaving. Due to the size of this engraving, and subsequent folding into a folio volume this is rarely found in such good condition, here on paper of substantial thickness. Printed from two printing plates, first published in Cologne in volume V of Braun and Hogenberg's monumental Civitates Orbis Terrarum and here re-issued with the imprint of Amsterdam publishers Covens and Mortier.

Title page expertly backed (with defective fore margin renewed) lower corner of first dozen gatherings with inoffensive small gray spots associated with a very light (sometimes invisible) dampstain five signatures with elongated worming right at fore edge (just barely intruding onto the leaf) minor worming at bottom of final 70 leaves (beginning as two small holes elongating slightly in six quires but always well away from the text) other insignificant imperfections but still pleasing internally the vast majority of the text clean and quite fresh. STC 19476; Lowndes III, 1803; Graesse V, 170. As the title indicates this is an annotated dictionary of persons and places appearing in the Bible and it is one of the earliest such books in English. Tabitha for example is identified as a pious woman resuscitated by Peter. Hers is a Syrian name we are told the Hebrew equivalent being "Dorcas" the meaning being "Dama" in Latin and "Deer" in English. The name "Elizabeth" provokes a long digression as she is not only the mother of John the Baptist but the sovereign of England on whose ancestors the author expatiates and whom he extols in a Latin poem. The information is culled largely from the "Biblia Polyglotta" of Francisco Ximénez de Cisneros and the "Dictionarium Theologicum" of Joannes Arquerius. William Patten who appears in the records for the final time in 1580 was a cousin of Bishop Waynflete of Winchester. In 1548 Patten participated in the expedition into Scotland of the Duke of Somerset and his description of the campaign is the ultimate source of Holinshed’s account. Subsequently he worked as a teller at the queen’s exchequer in Westminster and served as a justice of the peace. The publisher R. Jugge is best known for producing the Bishops’ Bible. Like many early English works from the Macclesfield library this is a very rare book: ABPC lists just one copy at auction since 1975. $6000 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HERO (HERON) OF ALEXANDRIA - FOUNDATION
Spiritalium liber. A Federico Commandino Urbinate, ex Graeco, nuper in Latinum conversis. Cum Privilegio Gregorij XIII. Pont. Max.
Urbini, (D. Frisolini), 1575. Small 4to. Fine recent full vellum in old style with written title onback. ¶ First edition and the first printed work by Hero. It is Hero's main work, and it stimulated the interest and contributed substantially to the interest in pneumatics that arose suddenly in the late 16th century and led to the work of Toricelli and Boyle. It is one of the major sources to our knowledge of the technics and mechanics of Antiquity, and the many hydraulic and mechanical inventions by Hero is here depicted for the first time in print. The work includes studies of pneumatics and mechanics and include 89 illustrations of different inventions, such as siphons, fountains, engines, an account of a small stationary steam-engine (whic is of the form now known as Avery's patent), the double-force pump etc., which "by the union of (compressed) air, earth, fire, and water, and the concurrence of...elementary principles..., supply the most pressing wants of the human life, (or) produce amazement and alarm." The book describes many gadgets and magical tricks and includes the first suggestion of a steam engine (see f. 52). - Sarton, Introduction...Vol. I pp. 208 ff. - Adams H:369 - Poggendorff I: 1084.

Valeriano Bolzani, Giovanni
Hieroglyphica, Sive De Sacris Aegyptiorum, Aliarumque Gentium Literis Commentarii. a Celio Augustino Curione Duobis Libris Auctii, & Multis Imaginibus Illustrati
Basel (Thomas Guarinus), March, 1575. (10)ff., 12pp., 13-441ff., 25ff. Woodcut title-page vignette, splendid full-page portrait by Tobias Stimmer in elaborate ornamental frame, and 273 woodcut illus. Lettrines and schematic figs. in text. Stout folio. Contemporary calf, handsomely blindstamped with fillets and oval device at the center of each cover; handsome seventeenth-century calligraphed paper labels on spine, lettered in red and black. A book of pivotal importance in late Renaissance iconography, first published in Basel, 1556; the present edition follows that of 1567, which was the first to contain the two additional books by Caelio Augustino Curio. Dedicated to Cosimo I de' Medici, Valeriano's “Hieroglyphica” is “a vast compilation of all the hieroglyphic knowledge of his time; it drew on Horapollo, the ‘Physiologus, ' the obelisks he saw in Rome, the Cabala and the Bible as sources. It was so popular that eleven editions were published in the first seventy years. At the time it was believed that hieroglyphs were a purely ideographical form of writing used by ancient Egyptian priests to foreshadow divine ideas, and that the Greek philosophers had tapped into ‘hieroglyphic wisdom. ' In the dedication of his ‘Hieroglyphica, ' Valeriano writes, ‘[To] speak hieroglyphically is nothing else but to disclose the true nature of things divine and human. He contributed no revolutionary ideas to the field, but his compilation was instrumental in changing the study of hieroglyphic symbols from a philosophical to a philological pursuit” (Funk). Valeriano (1477-1558) was Vasari's Latin teacher, and tutor to Giovanni de' Medici (the future Pope Leo X); in 1509, as the private secretary of Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, he travelled to Rome, where he studied the city's antiquities. The “Hieroglyphica” provided a fountain of emblematic imagery for leading artists, while the inscriptions in his historical material were utilized by humanist historians. It was unquestionably the most important source for Ripa's...
