First title with portrait of Alfred surrounded by elaborate compartment with at top Time, Truth and Antiquity above a terrestrial globe, figures of Ptolemy, Marius, Strabo etc and allegorical figures of the science surrounding, a bearded Memory (perhaps John Day) at foot, probably by the miniaturist John Bettes and one of the great Elizabethan t-ps (McKerrow & Ferguson 99), second title within compartment of mouldings with festoon of fruit at corners, Binneman's mermaid at foot (McKerrow & Ferguson 147), last within figurative architectural border, royal arms at head, boys in landscape within compartment at foot (McKerrow & Ferguson 76). This very handsome volume, a piece of deluxe Elizabethan book production comprises three notable first editions of English history. The first is John Asser's life of Alfred the Great.. Asser was a Welsh monk of St David's who became Bishop of Sherborne. He had a high reputation for learning and was invited by Alfred to join his household, which he did for six months every year. The King and the monk frequently studied together and Alfred refers to Asser in his translation of St Gregory. Asser's firsthand account is our principal authority for Alfred's life. It consists of a chronicle of English history from 849 to 887, and provides an original narrative of Alfred's career to this date. The work was edited by Matthew Parker and it is probably from his interpolations that a number of the famous Alfred legends - like the burning of the cakes � derive. Thomas Walsingham a monk of St Albans who lived c.1360-1440 was the last representative of that school of medieval historians. His great historical work, the Chronica Maiora, is now lost, all that remains is the author's abbreviated version, published here. The history extends from 1272-1422; the earlier parts are mostly derivative though with some additions and alterations, but for the reigns of Henry IV and especially Henry V it is the chief surviving contemporary history and of considerable authority. Walsingham had access to good information, was unbiased and of trustworthy character. He possessed detailed knowledge of events in England and Normandy unrecorded elsewhere for the period after 1406, was extensively quoted by Holinshed and Stow and thus brought to the mainstream of English history. His Ypodigmas, dedicated to Henry V, comprises a manual of the history of Normandy from the time of Rollo to its recovery by Henry in 1419. Its object was to provide Henry with a summary of history of his predecessors and to furnish a historical precedent for his invasion of France. Walsingham was essentially a chronicler, a painstaking collection of historical facts but we know for example the facts of Wycliffe's career and Watt Tyler's rebellion more from Walsingham than any other single source. Das wohl aus einem von Ancina angelegten Florilegium bemerkenswerter historischer Ereignisse entnommene Blatt enth�lt eine Beschreibung der in vielen Fassungen �berlieferten Pariser Hostiensch�ndung von 1290, bei der ein Jude die Hostie mit dem Messer wie auch mit kochendem Wasser maltr�tiert, worauf das Sakrament zu bluten beginnt. Auf der R�ckseite findet sich ein Johannes Zonaras entnommener Bericht �ber das Leiden des wassers�chtigen Kaisers Heraklius, dem beim Wasserlassen der Harn ins Gesicht zu spritzen pflegte, so da� seine �rzte besondere Schutzschirme f�r seinen Unterleib ersinnen mu�ten. Au�erdem zum Gotenk�nig Athalarich als Beispiel f�r den Schaden schlechter Bildung von Jugendlichen, dem Ludwig IX. von Frankreich sowie die Heiligen Bernhard und Petrus von Cluny gegen�bergestellt werden. - Der an den Universit�ten von Montpellier, Turin und Pavia ausgebildete Humanist gelangte 1574 als Botschafter des Herzogs von Savoyen nach Rom, wo er Theologie zu studieren begann und schlie�lich die Bekanntschaft Filippo Neris machte, der ihn f�r die neugegr�ndete Kongregation der Oratorianer gewann. 1602 wurde er schlie�lich zum Bischof von Saluzzo geweiht, wo er am "31. August 1604 von einem Verbrecher aus Rache vergiftet" wurde (LThk I, 401). 1889 wurde er seliggesprochen. "Ancina’s significance in the history of music lies in his propagation and encouragement of sacred poetry and music as part of the religous renewal begun by Neri. Inspired by the Counter-Reformation, he collected the best and most popular pieces of music and supplied them with new sacred texts in place of the profane originals. The contrafacta written in a manuscript copy (in [the Biblioteca Vallicelliana, Rome]) of 'L'amorosa ero' (RISM 1588) are an early example of this technique. His most important enterprise was 'Tempio armonico della beatissima vergine' [.] He also provided the texts of many 'laudi' that appeared in Rome around 1600" (New Grove I, 395). VD 16, E 533. - Erst 1579 erschien ein zweiter Teil unter dem Titel "Das guldene Fl�ss Christlicher Gemain und Gesellschafft", die erste Ausgabe erschien 1573. - Georg Eder (1523 - 1587) studierte seit 1541 in K�ln und ging 1547 ging er an die Universit�t Wien, wurde 1551 zum Dr. jur. utr. promoviert und war elf Mal Rektor der Universit�t. Georg Eder wurde Fiskalanwalt der nieder�sterreichischen Landschaft, kgl. Rat und Kammerprokurator, 1563 Reichshofrat. Er bem�hte sich, den Katholizismus in �sterreich zu st�rken, verfa�te akademische Reden, polemische Schriften sowie die erste Geschichte der Wiener Universit�t. Wegen seiner Angriffe auf die theologischen Grundlagen des Luthertums zog er sich den Zorn Kaiser Maximilians II. zu und erhielt f�r Schriften zu Religionsfragen Publikationsverbot. - "Of the many polemical writings of Eder two are of greater significance to us, the Evangelische Inquisition, published 1573 by the Jesuit press of Dillingen, Bavaria (second edition at Ingolstadt in 1580), and the somewhat more restrained Malleus Haereticorum (Hammer of the Heretics). In both books Eder tries to justify himself for writing about such a subject in spite of being a jurist. Yet, he declares, he is writing not as a theologian but as a politician who is concerned with the general condition of the country both civic and religious. Church life has deteriorated, he laments, and all obedience to the authorities has nearly vanished, even in Vienna, the seat of the government, in spite of apparent faithfulness externally. The Evangelische Inquisition is dedicated to two Hapsburg archdukes and was presented personally to the emperor. Nevertheless the imperial government reprimanded him for his attacks on the Lutherans, tried to confiscate all copies available, and forbade him to write further concerning such religious subjects. Since the emperor died only three years later (1576), this order was of little effect, and the book was soon republished (1580). ... [It] describes "the present condition of the churches and the general unchristian polemic" (Klaggeschrei), including also a Ketzertanz of 48 tables or charts. ... Of all the Protestant groups the Anabaptists receive Eders most acid attacks. Concerning the origin of Anabaptism, Eder claims that it derives somehow from Luther and his teachings. Most of what Eder writes is hear-say; mingled with a few correct statements is much fancy. In general the book is intended to be a defense of Catholicism against charges by the Lutherans." Eastern Book Linkers, Delhi 2009 - The Bhagavata Purana occupies a very important position in the realism of Indian philosophy religious and culture. It is one of the most important and popular works of Indian literature. The very fact that there are eighty one commentaries in Sanskrit alone on this work compiled with the fact that it has translated not only in every language of India but in French German Persian and English languages. It gives an impression to a sensible reader that the Bhagavata Purana is not only a popular work but must be of much significance too. The Bhagavata is aware of the fact that people have their own liking. This attempt understand and interpret the supreme in accordance with the aptitudes and tendencies of different persons. But their different descriptions merely imply that the supreme has many names and forms. Puranas contain all elements of popular Hinduism viz. rites ceremonies vows modes of worship heaven hell virtues sins atonements pilgrimage reverence to gurus and Brahmans and the like. They preach the cults of Vishnu Shiva and Shakti and wrangle over the superiority of one. There is a class of long poems similar to Ramayana and Mahabharata but not having any central theme. These are known as Puranas Ancient lore. The Puranas have also an association with a bard/bards and the sages and the Naimisaranya Forest. Being the works of Ved Vyasa the author of the Mahabharata the Puranas present the teachings of Vyasa. In the Mahabharata and in the Ramayana the tales of great Heroes from the main theme and in the Puranas the culture of the ancient times forms the main theme. In the former the culture is held together by the main story while in the latter the story is contained in the presentation of the culture. In Bhagavata Dharma also the desire has been prohibited. At several places in Bhagavata direction for desireless action is to be found. Besides bondage what else could be the reason for not having the desire for the result. This is worth considering. In Gita desirous action has not been prohibited only because of its being the cause for bondage. Instead the main reason for the sacrifice of desire that has cause of the result of action and prohibition of Karma sanyasa Lord Srikrsna goes on to tell Arjuna how actions should be performed. Prachinabharhish was performing an action prescribed by Veda. But Narada's telling him that he did not even know what was meant by Karman deserves special consideration. As a matter of fact even actions prescribed by Sastras if they are performed with any particular desire in mind and an ill effort is made to accomplish them without fully considering the form of action then even prescribed actions could become harmful as happened in the case of Prachinabarhish. The action which Parachinabarhish was performing was also forbidden despite its being prescribed by the Veda because of its entailing killing of animals. Therefore while choosing actions discretion is also absolutely necessary. This reference also clearly indicated the fact that not only those actions which satisfy the Lord but the ways and means by which those actions are performed are also of particular importance. That is all types of actions whether they are with desire or without desire or without a purpose if they are devoid of the spirit of the Lord they do not look attractive. Not only that even knowledge which is the means of attaining liberation does not shine fully without that. But in Bhagavata this appears to occupy a prominent place. This Bhagavata view is the root of Bhagavata Dharma. By adopting this view alongwith solving the problems of our age we can also attain the highest goal of human life with ease and life will be happy in all. The Bhagvata has chosen to describe the supreme many times by such adjectives as a devote that he likes the path of devotion as a means of truth. First edition. A rare treatise on government, society and economy, written during the French Wars of Religion by the archdeacon of Toule. Rosi�res enjoyed the patronage of Charles, the Guise cardinal of Lorraine, to whom this book is dedicated. In 1580 he published Stemmatum Lotharingiae ac Barri ducum libri septem, which, on fraudulent documentary evidence, attempted to prove that the house of Lorraine (of which the Guise was a branch) was the rightful claimant to the French crown: unsurprisingly the book was suppressed, but, thanks to his Guise connections, Rosi�res suffered no more that a short term of imprisonment (see NBG).INED 3904. Dell'autore (1530-1622) si sa che era veneziano, originario di Ceneda, e che scrisse anche delle "Rime", dedicandole al conte Fulvio Rangoni (cfr.Fontanini-Zeno, Bibl. eloquenza ilta., II, p. 344, n. 2 e nota 2; Cat. No writer of one age and nation has ever received more devoted and important services from a writer of another than Plutarch owes to Amyot. Already the translator of the Greek pastorals of Heliodorus and Longus, as well as seven books of Diodorm Siculus, Amyot came not unprepared to the subject of his life's work. Years were spent in purification of the text. Amyot's marginal notes as to variants in the original Greek give hut a slight conception of the extent of his labours in this direction. In 1559, being then Abbot of Bellozane, Amyot published his translation of Plutarch's Lives, printed in a large folio volume by the famous Parisian house of Vascosan. Yet it was not the Lives solely that occupied him. In 1572 were printed Les Oeuvres Morales et Meslees de Plutarque. Translatees du Grec en Francois par Messire Jacques Amyot. The popularity of this work, by whose appearance all Plutarch was rendered accessible in the vernacular to French readers, was hardly inferior to that the Lives had attained. It clearly shows the difficulties the Stadtholder William the Silent and the revolting provinces had with the hot issue of the sovereignty of the 'liberated' provinces, before they abjured the Spanish king in 1581. Froissart (c. 1337 � c. 1405) was one of the most important of the chroniclers of medieval France. For centuries, Froissart's Chronicles have been recognized as the chief expression of the chivalric revival of the 14th century kingdom of England and France. His history is also one of the most important sources for the first half of the Hundred Years' War. The editor of this edition, Denis Sauvage (c. 1520-c. 1587) was a wellknown French historian, translator and philologist, historiographer to King Henri II. His edition was first published in 1559-61. Les deux editions sont imprimees en petits caracteres, mais le tome I chez Du Puys est d'une meilleure facture (exemplaire regle), et se trouve etre l'une des trois editions signalees comme etant les plus belles parmi les editions compactes , Brunet IV, 738. §Tome I : plein velin poli a rabats d'epoque. Ce roman grec qui longtemps attribue a S. Jean de Damas (VIII e siecle) n'est sans doute pas de lui. Voir la longue notice a ce sujet dans le Diction. de Spiritualite tome 8 p.464, qui penche pour une attribution a Euthymios d'Ibere. Le roman raconte l'histoire du fils du roi des Indes qui, malgre son pere, se convertit au christianisme et se fait moine grace au moine Barlaam. L'ouvrage connut une diffusion considerable dans la chretiente orientale et occidentale. Rare edition lyonnaise inconnue de R. Arbour et de Brunet. This very handsome volume, a piece of deluxe Elizabethan book production comprises three notable first editions of English history. The first is John Asser's life of Alfred the Great. Asser was a Welsh monk of St David's who became Bishop of Sherborne. He had a high reputation for learning and was invited by Alfred to join his household, which he did for six months every year. The King and the monk frequently studied together and Alfred refers to Asser in his translation of St Gregory. Asser's firsthand account is our principal authority for Alfred's life. It consists of a chronicle of English history from 849 to 887, and provides an original narrative of Alfred's career to this date. The work was edited by Matthew Parker and it is probably from his interpolations that a number of the famous Alfred legends - like the burning of the cakes – derive. Thomas Walsingham a monk of St Albans who lived c.1360-1440 was the last representative of that school of medieval historians. His great historical work, the Chronica Maiora, is now lost, all that remains is the author's abbreviated version, published here. The history extends from 1272-1422; the earlier parts are mostly derivative though with some additions and alterations, but for the reigns of Henry IV and especially Henry V it is the chief surviving contemporary history and of considerable authority. Walsingham had access to good information, was unbiased and of trustworthy character. He possessed detailed knowledge of events in England and Normandy unrecorded elsewhere for the period after 1406, was extensively quoted by Holinshed and Stow and thus brought to the mainstream of English history. His Ypodigmas, dedicated to Henry V, comprises a manual of the history of Normandy from the time of Rollo to its recovery by Henry in 1419. Its object was to provide Henry with a summary of history of his predecessors and to furnish a historical precedent for his invasion of France. Walsingham was essentially a chronicler, a painstaking collection of historical facts but we know for example the facts of Wycliffe's career and Watt Tyler's rebellion more from Walsingham than any other single source.
