      Parigi?, s.e., 1552-1575. Incisione su lastra di rame. Foglio unico di mm. 155x141, privo di filigrana. Scala non indicata. Carta geografica con indicazione «Vniverselle Liure III. D'istrie 781» tratta dall’edizione francese della Cosmographia di Sebastian Münster. Nella parte inferiore indicazione «Loys Vergeius Vergerio Sebastian Munster» quale intestazione alla traduzione italiana della nota epistola che il capodistriano Lodovico Vergerio inviò al Münster da Basilea il 7 dicembre 1549 ed apparsa nella Cosmographia edita dall’officina di Heinrich Petri di Basilea. Come osserva Luciano Lago, «quello che ci viene proposto è un disegno dell’Istria assai scadente, che non risponde affatto alla realtà. Rispetto ai documenti del Coppo esso si presenta come del tutto indipendente e lascia supporre l’utilizzazione di qualche prodotto di compilazione, che ci è ignoto». La città di Gorizia è indicata con il toponimo «Goritia», tre monti ed un castelletto. Cfr. Textverlust, Bl. 197 mit am Rand hinterlegten Einrissen). (E 037588) Erste (einzige) Ausgabe.- Kaspar Huberinus (1500 - 1553) war 1522 als Student nach Wittenberg gekommen. Seit 1525 wirkte er - zunächst ohne kirchliches Amt - in Augsburg und Öhringen. Hier trat er entschieden für die Position Luthers im Abenmahlstreit mit den Zwinglianern ein. Seine Hauptwirksamkeit entfaltete er jedoch in vielen, teils mehrfach gedruckten Erbauungsschriften, die sich durch "eine gewisse Frische" (NDB) und "künstlerische Kraft" (RGG) auszeichneten.- VD 16 H 5624.- Zwei weitere Schriften angebunden: 2. GEORG III. v. ANHALT. Von dem hochwirdigen Sacrament des Leibs und Bluts unsers Herren Jhesu Christi, Vier Predigten ... Anno 1550. Corrigirt und gebessert. (Am Ende:) Leipzig, W. Georg III. von Anhalt, genannt der Gottselige, war der einzige fürstliche Kleriker, der nach der Reformation auch ein evangelisches Predigtamt übernahm. Von Luther ordiniert, wurde er 1544 geistlicher Koadjutor für das Bistum Merseburg, wo er schon seit vorreformatorischer Zeit (1518) Domherr war. Luther sah in Georg die lauterste und frömmste Persönlichkeit seiner Zeit. Er hat "in für seine Zeit einzigartiger Weise das Pfarramt und das ev. bischöfl. Aufsichtsamt als Seelsorgeamt verstanden" (NDB 6, 197).- VD 16 G 1333.- 3. DIETRICH, VEIT. Agend Büchlein für die Pharrherrn auff dem Land. (Nürnberg, J. v. Berg u. U. Neuber), 1544. 108 Bl. Mit Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre u. Druckermarke am Schluss (Ränder am Ende mit stärkeren Nässespuren u. kl. Wurmspur im Bund, die letzten 18 Bl. mit Randfehlstellen am oberen Rand, die letzten 4 Bl. dadurch mit geringf. Buchstabenverlust).- Dritte Ausgabe dieser wichtigen, zuerst 1543 erschienenen lutherischen Kirchenordnung, die in Nürnberg bis 1799 in Gebrauch war (NDB 3, 699; zur Datierung der einzelnen Auflagen vgl. RE IV, 656). Veit Dietrich war in Wittenberg Luthers Haus- und Tischgenosse gewesen. Als persönlicher Vertrauter Luthers begleitete er diesen 1529 zum Marburger Religionsgespräch und 1530 auf die Veste Coburg, von wo aus Luther die Verhandlungen um die Augsburger Konfession kritisch verfolgte. Besonderes Vertrauen genoss er auch bei Melanchthon, der an Dietrich schon früh dessen "singulare ingenium et singularem eruditionem" rühmte (RE). Ende 1535 kehrte Dietrich als Pfarrer in seine Heimatstadt Nürnberg zurück.- VD 16 A 639.

Vol 1°, frontespizio con marca tipografica, ccnn3, pp 326,1b, vol II, front. con impresa, pp 506+ c.nn con registro e marca, foro di tarlo ai margini int. di alcune cc, macchia oleosa alla parte sup. delle ultime 80 cc del 2° vol. che non pregiudica la perfetta leggibilità del testo. Prima edizione dell'opera più importante del Giovio e uno dei capolavori tipografici del Torrentino, al tempo stesso. Testo ottimamente impresso su carta forte, a largo margine, con 48 capilettera ornati ed istoriati. Il Giovio dedicò a questo capolavoro storiografico, 30 anni di lavoro, riguarda gli anni dal 1494 al 1547 ed occupa un posto notevole nella storiografia del Rinascimento. Brunet III, col 583.

Some minor staining to first few leaves. Iamblichus (ca 245 - ca 330) was a Syrian philosopher and one of the most important of the so-called Neoplatonic philosophers. He was a student of Porphyry, disciple of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism. The true title of this work is: "Answer of Master Abammon to a Letter sent by Porphyry to Anebon and Solution of the Difficulties which can be Found there". An early edition, translated into Latin by Marsile Ficin (1433-1499).

Erste Ausgabe. - Eines der schoensten manieristischen Holzschnittbuecher Marcolinis, "reich mit figuerlichen Darstellungen aus dem 'Giardino', sehr guten Bildnissen beruehmter Zeitgenossen und Ornamentstuecken ausgestattet" (Kristeller, Kupferst. u. Holzschn., S. 288). Der Buchschmuck aus frueheren Publikationen Marcolinis und Donis wiederverwendet: "the mixture of illustration is related to Doni's construction of his books out of dialogue, philosophical discourse, anecdotes, multiple dedications, and addresses to the reader" (Mortimer). Die kuriosen und satirischen Dialoge der "Academia Peregrina" ueber Kunst und Leben angesichts der Marmorskulpturen im Dom von Florenz sind den Gespraechsteilnehmern vom Verfasser in der verwandelten Gestalt eines kleinen Singvoegelchens abgelauscht. Schon der erste Dialog ist fuer die Rezeptionsgeschichte der kosmologischen Umwaelzungen im 16. Jahrhundert bemerkenswert: Der Buffo Carafulla verficht eben neun Jahre nach Kopernikus' "De revolutionibus" (und 80 Jahre vor Galileis "Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo") das heliozentrische Weltbild ("Il sole non gia, noi giramo; la terra e quella che si volge, non sai tu che il cielo si chiama fermamento; & quando costa vanno a torno alla terra e dicono io ho girato tutta la cosmographia" (I, 18). - Ausserdem zahlreiche selbstreflexive Bemerkungen zum Buchdruck: "A dialogue on the value of printing is given in part 2 [...] Gutenberg is named as inventor of printing in the year 1440 [...] There is a tribute to Aldo Manuzio" (Mortimer); ferner eine euphorische Beschreibung des zeitgenoessischen Stands der Druckkunst, Typographie und Buchillustration (II, 7). - Anton Francesco Doni (1513?-74), "ein Mitglied der Academie der Peregrini, in welcher er den Nahmen Bizarro gefuehret, [...] war anfaenglich ein Servit, verliess aber um 1539 den Orden und wurde ein weltlicher Priester. Seine Geschicklichkeit in der Music machte, dass er an viele Orte verlanget wurde [...] Aber seine geruehmten Inventionen haben bey klugen Leuten neimals vielen Beyfall gefunden, indem der groeste Theil auf lauter abgeschmackte und kindische Wortspiele hinauslaeuft" (Joecher [1750]). Der vielseitig begabte Doni (vgl. auch Eitner III, 230) gilt als italienischer UEbersetzer der "Utopia" des Thomas Morus und als geistiges Bindeglied zwischen diesem und Campanella. - Sauberes, kaum gebraeuntes Exemplar. Am letzten Blatt verso hs. Besitzvermerk der Zeit "[Giovanni] Batt[ist]a de Blanchis de Vallate". Am vorderen Vorsatz zeitgenoess. hs. Vermerk: "A di' 2 magio 1553 ch[e] fu m[ar]tedi' a hore 20 si parti' da M[i]l[an]o per Ven[egi]a il mag[nifi]co m[ess]er Io[anni] Andre[a] d'Anno[ne]" ("Am 2. Mai 1553, dienstags um die 20. Stunde, brach auf von Mailand nach Venedig der beruehmte Meister Giovanni Andrea d'Annone"). Der Genannte ist moeglicherweise zu identifizieren mit dem Architekten Andrea Vannone, der 1539 den Palazzo Nuovo in Bergamo baute. - Spaeter in der Sammlung des Wiener Militaers, Landschaftsmalers und Kartographen Franz Ritter von Hauslab (1798-1883) mit seinem herald. GRIECHENLAND.* Aus dem geographischen Lehrbuch "Rudimentorum cosmographicorum libri" des siebenbürgischen Reformators Honter, der als Lehrer in Krakau, ab 1530 als Verlagslektor in Basel wirkte und ab 1533 in seiner Heimatstadt Kronstadt/Siebenbürgen in einer eigenen Druckerei Reformationsschriften herausgab. Die Kosmographie Honters war mit über 30 Auflagen eine überaus erfolgreiche Schrift, deren Attraktivität nicht zuletzt in den kleinen, aber präzisen Karten lag. Die Griechenlandkarte (ohne eigentlichen Titel) zeigt das Land von Thessaloniki bis zur Peloponnes mit den Inseln; im Meer sind mehrere auf Seegetier reitende Götter dargestellt. Auf der Rückseite je eine halbseitige Karte von Norditalien und Bulgarien.

Legatura moderna in cartoncino rigido. Esemplare parzialmente intonso, ad ampi margini. All'antiporta incisione di Antonio Verico su disegno di Carlo Falcini. Piccolissime chiazze alla stampa e al frontespizio. Si tratta di una cronaca della presa di Gerusalemme fatta dal Monaco di San Remigio di Reims, Ruberto, pubblicata la prima volta a Firenze nel 1552 dal Torrentino per la versione di Francesco Baldelli. Si vuole che da essa trasse spunto il Tasso per il suo capolavoro. Ruberto fu allievo di Erimaro, cui nel 1094 successe alla guida del Monastero suddetto. Ebbe travagliata vita religiosa e morì circa nel 1122. > Gamba, 1617, "Abbiamo oggidì altra versione di questa Storia, fatta dal ch. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, with clasps (catches gone). A very fine copy of the first Latin edition, translated by David Kyber, with 38 new woodcuts which appear for the first time, and the first edition to include the Gesner and Tessier material. The first illustrated German edition of Bock, was published in 1546, and contained 468 woodcuts (enlarged to 530 in the 1551 edition) by David Kandel. Kandel for the most part based his woodcuts on those of Fuchs and Brunfels, but some one hundred are entirely original, and include several with charming genre scenes accompanying the plant depictions, many with his initials. Bock was one of the 'Fathers of German Botany', the triumvirate that included Brunfels and Fuchs. As a botanist Bock was their decided superior. He was not shackled to the classical authority of Dioscorides and Pliny, and therefore could recognise new plants without his perception being clouded by supposed classical precedents. He pioneered descriptive botany, giving a detailed developmental history of each plant in its stages of growth, and was the first to discuss plant communities, thus foreshadowing the science of ecology. Gesner's contribution to this edition comprises a preface to the work and a 50-page bibliography of botanical writers, constituting the first botanical bibliography. Tessier provided a commentary on Dioscorides. Provenance: Old ownership inscription at inside of frontcover, old oval stamp on verso of title 'Museum Rem. Contemporary full vellum with yapp edges, lacks ties, title in manuscript to spine, library bookplate to paste-down, damp stain to earlier leaves affecting lower quarter of the page, annotations in an early hand throughout. 'Brasavola, like many physicians of his era, also held doctorates in law and theology and taught these subjects as well as medicine. He was a pupil of Niccolo Leoniceno (Leonicenus), a famous Italian medical humanist who also made an important translation of Hippocrates' Aphorisms. Brasavola served as personal physician to the Popes Paul III, Leo X, Clement VII, and Julius III; to Emperor Charles V, King Francis I, and King Henry VIII. He wrote some seventy books and articles, is said to have performed a large number of tracheotomies, and described over two hundred different kinds of syphilis. Among his many works were an authoritative concordance of Galen and this popular work on herbal medicine, first published in 1536, in which he introduced several new drugs into the pharmacopoeia. The work is in the form of a dialogue among Brasavola, an old apothecary, and an herbalist. It is a lengthy treatise and shows that, while he had made significant advances in presenting his material and his methods, he had not entirely succeeded in freeing himself from the traditional lore and superstitions of the past.' Handsome. * The first two parts of a seven-part set. This first includes the Rule in Shelly's Case (1581), which says that if, in a single grant, a freehold estate is given to a person and a remainder is given to the person's heirs, the remainder belongs to the named person and not the heirs, so that the person is held to have a fee simple absolute. "Coke's Reports [which contain cases from 1572 to 1616] retain a position among.legal publications that few of the elder reports possess. Contains the cases of Burkhurt, Pelham, Porter, Woods, Capel, Archer, Bredon, Corbet, Shelley, Albany, Chudleigh, Mayowe, Chedington, and Digges. Coke was perhaps the greatest legal practitioner of his day. Written between 1572 and 1616, and intended originally for personal use, the Reports are not reports in the conventional sense but highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized according to the cases they consider. In each instance Coke assembled a large body of cases, outlined their arguments, and explained the rationale behind the verdicts, using them as a basis for a statement of general principles. They are, in effect, a series of treatises on the points of law adjudged. The Reports form the most extensive and detailed treatment of Common Law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. His accounts, especially of pleadings, were applauded for both their clarity and usefulness as stylistic models for students. And his selection of cases, cited frequently in subsequent years, has served as the starting point for numerous decisions. He also attracted some powerful enemies, however, principally James I, who was angered by some of his opinions concerning royal prerogative. Contemporary limp vellum, new endpapers. A fine edition of Brunschwig's distilling book, the first and only one to include the large botanical woodcuts, taken from Brunfels herbal. Egenolph had previously utilized plagiarized copies, cut on a much smaller scale, of the Weiditz/ Brunfels blocks for this edition of Brunschwig, but this is the first appearance of the full cuts accompanying Brunschwig's text. It contains the first two books of Brunschwig's Kleines Distilierbuch, first published in 1500. This was the first work devoted to the extraction by steam distillation of the essential oils of plants (and to a lesser extent animal substances and minerals). It was immensely popular and went through numerous editions in various formats. The charming woodcut title shows distilling apparatus and 2 men working amidst rich foliage of trees and birds. RE IV, 656). Veit Dietrich war in Wittenberg Luthers Haus- und Tischgenosse gewesen. Als persönlicher Vertrauter Luthers begleitete er diesen 1529 zum Marburger Religionsgespräch und 1530 auf die Veste Coburg, von wo aus Luther die Verhandlungen um die Augsburger Konfession kritisch verfolgte. Besonderes Vertrauen genoss er auch bei Melanchthon, der an Dietrich schon früh dessen "singulare ingenium et singularem eruditionem" rühmte (RE). Wichtigste italienische Entscheidungssammlung im europäischem Raum! Der Versuch des Vorrangs des präjudiziellen Rechts nahm mit Afflictis seinen Anfang. Die Idee des Entwurfs einer umfassenden Systematik mit präjudiziellem Charakter erfuhr mit dem Codex Fabrianus seinen Höhepunkt. Man suchte zunächst die wissenschaftliche Erschließung, um dann ein case-law-book mit vertrauter Systematik vorzulegen. In der Regel wurde die Systematik des Codex Justinianus benutzt. Die berühmte Entscheidungssammlung des Neapolitanischen Juristen Matteo d"Afflitto (1443-1528) wird als einer der ersten modernen Sammlung höchstrichterlicher Rechtsprechung eingestuft. (Vgl. Coing Handbuch II,2/1179). Diese Entscheidungssammlung ist aus zwei Gründen von überragender Bedeutung: einmal war der Neapolitanische Rechtskreis, vor allem deren Gerichtshöfe, vorbildhaft für ganz Europa. Zum anderen werden erstmals ausgesuchte Entscheidungen wissenschaftlich kommentiert, bisweilen in monographischem Stil. Die wissenschaftliche Pflege vom präjudiziellem Recht nahm mit diesem Werk ihren Anfang und fand auch in Deutschland viele Nachahmer. Die italienischen Entscheidungssammlungen formten auch die Publikationsform. In diesen Bänden wurden die Entscheidungssgründe und die wesentlichen Begründungen veröffentlicht, nicht die gesamte Entscheidung. Eine Publikationspraxis, die auch bei den heutigen Sammelbänden höchstrichterlicher Rechtsprechung (BGH) sich erhalten hat. Insgesamt hat Affllictis 404 Gerichtsentscheidungen (decisiones) in dem Band mitaufgenommen.

(Mouillure marginale claire sur une quinzaine de feuillets au niveau du titre courant, quelques rousseurs.) Rare premiere edition de cet ouvrage de Barthelemy ANEAU, orne d'une suite de 106 vignettes, dont 2 sont repetees, la plupart mesurant 36 x 50 millimetres ; 17 sont en premier tirage. Ces vignettes furent longtemps attribuees a Bernard SALOMON, graveur attitre de Jean de TOURNES, mais qui travailla en quelques occasions pour Guillaume ROUILLE, a qui Mathieu (Mace) BONHOMME etait associe depuis 1548 (Mace BONHOMME avait imprime pour ROUILLE la premiere edition latine des Emblemes d'ALCIAT illustree des figures de Pierre VASE). C'est BAUDRIER qui, le premier, attribua a Pierre VASE la paternite des illustrations de Picta Poesis ; mais il semble que 17 seulement appartiennent a ce dernier, les autres etant des reutilisations de provenances diverses (sur l'une des vignettes - Ex Domino Servus, page 41 - on releve les lettres I.F qui designent vraisemblablement Jacob FABER, dont les bois furent employes a Paris et a Lyon au milieu du XVIe siecle). Barthelemy ANEAU qui fut l'ami et le correcteur de BONHOMME, raconte dans sa preface les circonstances qui amenerent a la publication de cet ouvrage. Une des nouvelles vignettes executees par VASE (page 8), et qui denonce la corruption des magistrats, fut supprimee dans toutes les editions suivantes, latines et francaises. Jahrhundert bemerkenswert: Der Buffo Carafulla verficht eben neun Jahre nach Kopernikus' "De revolutionibus" (und 80 Jahre vor Galileis "Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo") das heliozentrische Weltbild ("Il sole non gia, noi giramo; la terra e quella che si volge, non sai tu che il cielo si chiama fermamento; & quando costa vanno a torno alla terra e dicono io ho girato tutta la cosmographia" (I, 18). - Ausserdem zahlreiche selbstreflexive Bemerkungen zum Buchdruck: "A dialogue on the value of printing is given in part 2 [...] Gutenberg is named as inventor of printing in the year 1440 [...] There is a tribute to Aldo Manuzio" (Mortimer); ferner eine euphorische Beschreibung des zeitgenoessischen Stands der Druckkunst, Typographie und Buchillustration (II, 7). - Anton Francesco Doni (1513?-74), "ein Mitglied der Academie der Peregrini, in welcher er den Nahmen Bizarro gefuehret, [...] war anfaenglich ein Servit, verliess aber um 1539 den Orden und wurde ein weltlicher Priester. Seine Geschicklichkeit in der Music machte, dass er an viele Orte verlanget wurde [...] Aber seine geruehmten Inventionen haben bey klugen Leuten neimals vielen Beyfall gefunden, indem der groeste Theil auf lauter abgeschmackte und kindische Wortspiele hinauslaeuft" (Joecher [1750]). Der vielseitig begabte Doni (vgl. auch Eitner III, 230) gilt als italienischer UEbersetzer der "Utopia" des Thomas Morus und als geistiges Bindeglied zwischen diesem und Campanella. - Sauberes, kaum gebraeuntes Exemplar. Stunde, brach auf von Mailand nach Venedig der beruehmte Meister Giovanni Andrea d'Annone"). Der Genannte ist moeglicherweise zu identifizieren mit dem Architekten Andrea Vannone, der 1539 den Palazzo Nuovo in Bergamo baute. - Spaeter in der Sammlung des Wiener Militaers, Landschaftsmalers und Kartographen Franz Ritter von Hauslab (1798-1883) mit seinem herald. The text as a Roman is surrounded by an important comment, is printed in italic, is drawn from 16 humanistic of reputation among which: MELANCHTON, ERASME, SCALIGER, BEMBO, DONAT, LATOMUS, GLAREANUS and DOLET. The edition is decorated of a succession of labels illustrating the play of the actors, of which several are repeated at the head each scene. Of an antiquated style, they are copied from those of the edition of Venice, Scoto, 1545, except for the repeated figure which opens each part. Old handwritten ex libris. ADAMS T341. HARVARD 512.
