[Colophon:] Excudebat Balthazar Arnolletus<br>Lyon: Balthazar Arnoullet, 1549.

8vo: aa-bb8 a-z8 A-2H8 (blank 2b8), 448 leaves, pp. [32] (last 2 blank) 852 [12]. Roman letter withItalic headings, German names in Gothic . Woodcut device on title, portrait of Fuchs on verso, and 510 botanical woodcuts. Leaf size and condition: 173 x 105mm. Some soiling in the index; minor spotting and small stains. A very good clean and fresh copy. Binding: German blindstamped pigskin dated 1552 on upper board, brass clasps. Corners worn. Provenance and annotation: Contemporary or early inscription on free endleaf 'Sum Danielis Gündelfingeri Nordlingensis'. A few words of contemporary annotation; . Walter Pagel (1896-1983); B. E. J. Pagel (1930-2007). Fifth small format edition (first edition: folio, Basle, 1542; small format editions: 12mo, Paris, Dupuys 1546; 12mo, Paris, Bogardan, 1546; 8vo, Lyon, Arnoullet for Gazeau, 1547; 16mo, Paris, Fouchet, 1547). Arnoullet published another edition with the same collation in 1551. Stübler 41 b1 a; Baudrier X, p. 120; Gültlingen IX, Arnoullet 82; Adams F1102; Durling 1679; Hunt 61; Nissen 667; Pritzel 3138; Fairfax Murray 181; Mortimer 240. § Fuchs's herbal is celebrated for the beauty of the full-page illustrations in the lavish folio printed at Basle in 1542, arguably the first modern botanical illustrations. These were not naturalistic illustrations, but what Ogilvie has termed 'analytic', showing the essential features of the plant, not necessarily how it looked in the field (Ogilivie 2003 p. 146). However it was not just in the illustrations that Fuchs set new standards, but in his text as well, and it was not through the folio editions that text and image were widely disseminated but through the small format editions that rapidly followed. Here the illustrations are not full page, but set into the text which can be more readily consulted at the same time.New woodcuts were made for this edition: the portrait of Fuchs and 510 botanical illustrations cut by Clement Bussey who moved from Paris to Lyon to work for Arnoullet in 1547. Fuchs long epsitle to the reader is truncated and there is a new 'Tyographus lectori', refering to Arnoullet's unillustrated edition (1547) and defending the the omsission of Greek names in the present edition.A most attractive copy, with some early annotation, showing signs of use but still well preserved in a stout binding with the brass clasps intact. Edward Stübler, Leonhart Fuchs, Leben und Werk (1928); Brian W. Ogilvie, 'Image and Text in Natural History, 1500-1700'. In Lefèvre et al, The Power of Images in Early Modern Science (2003), pp. 141-166.

Aubigne, Theodore Agrippa D'.
L'Histoire Universelle Du Sieur D'Aubigné [Three Volumes].
|
A Maillé: Par Jean Moussat, 1616-1620. Joints split at spine ends, boards soiled and edgeworn; small worm hole in front board of Vol. I, writing verso of free front endpaper; Vol. III tear to free rear endpaper. 365, [28]; 489, [14 pp]; 549, [14] pp. 4to. Graesse I, 249. Brunet I, 545. European Americana: 516/4. Tchemerzine I, 164. Picot: Catalogue bibliothèque Rothschild, 2086. Backer III, 595. Theodore Agrippa D'Aubigne (1552-1630) "is the most enduring of late-sixteenth-century Huguenot authors. Of all witnesses of his age, he most directly and thoroughly addresses the violence of the Wars of Religion. The psychological and social impact of these conflicts are depicted in d'Aubigné's epic, Les Tragiques (1616, The Tragic Ones), and in his historical work, L'Histoire universelle (1616-1620), " (Long, Kathleen P. "Theodore Agrippa d'Aubigne." Sixteenth-Century French Writers, in DLB). The purpose of L'Histoire universelle was to present the history of the second half of the sixteenth century, though d'Aubigné reaches back to the eleventh century in order for posterity to know "our history from us.". The Synod of Gap authorized d'Aubigné's historical project, directing Protestant churches in France to send all information they gathered to d'Aubigné. But despite the official sanction, "the strength of L'Histoire universelle lies in the detailed accounts of battles d'Aubigné saw as an eyewitness or heard about from friends or cohorts." The first edition of L'Histoire universelle, published in three volumes between 1616 and 1620, covers the period from the birth of Henri de Navarre in 1553 to the end of the Wars of Religion. But d'Aubigné could not persuade the king of the justice of the Protestant cause nor obtain royal permission to publish his work. The first two volumes were finally condemned by royal authorities in 1620, and realizing that he could not remain in France and that a warrant for his arrest had been issued, he fled to Geneva. Very scarce as most copies were burned. "Edition Originale extrèmement rare, elle fut imprimée aux frais de l'auteur. Mais dès sa publication, une sentence du 2 janvier 1620 condamna l'ouvrage à être brûlé; quelques exemplaires seulement échappèrent au feu " (Tchemerzine I, 164).

Instrumento della filosofia
|
In Vinegia: Per Giovanmaria Bonelli, 1552 Both Instrumento della filosofia and La prima parte de la filosofia natural were published in 1561 in Rome. La seconda parte de la filosofia naturale was first published in 1564 in Rome. The first editions are exceedingly rare: OCLC notes only one copy of the first edition of Instrumento della filosofia, at Sachsiche Landesbibliothek in Dresden. Of the 1551-4 edition of La filosofia naturale, it lists four copies. The present editions are also rare. [Together with:] Piccolomini, Alessandro. Small octavo. 187, [1 blank] leaves; [16], 431 pages. Woodcut title-page device on first title-page, smaller, different woodcut device on second title; historiated initial letters, woodcut geometrical and occasionally astronomical diagrams in text. Small octavo. Woodcut publisher's device on title-page, woodcut historiated initial letters. Bound together in contemporary limp vellum with author and title in manuscript on spine. Covers partially browned, with tears at head of spine. Some dampstaining at lower margin through the first several gatherings of the first work; the first work also contains contemporary marginal underscoring, and a few contemporary marginal notes. A good, appealing copy. Alessandro Piccolomini (15089-1579) was a Siena-born Italian humanist who translated some of the classics into Italian, including Ovid's Metamorphoses, part of Vergil's Aeneid, and Aristotle's Poetics and Rhetoric. While a student at the University of Padua, he helped found the Infiammati Academy, where he gave lectures in philosophy. Thomas in his Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography (1872) calls him "the first who wrote on philosophy in the Italian language." We haven't been able to find corroboration for this in a more recent source, but these works clearly constitute some of the earliest philosophy written in Italian. In astronomy, Piccolomini is well known for his De la sfera del mondo (1559), the appendix (De la stele fisse) of which represents the first printed star atlas. He also wrote, at the behest of Cosimo de Medici, a proposal for reforming the calendar (1578). In 1574 Pope Gregory XIII appointed him titular bishop of Patras (Patrae).

John Speed
THE ISLE OF WIGHT
|
John Speed is a name that is synonymous with English cartography. He is also arguably the most famous name in English cartography. He was born in 1552, in a pretty village named Farndon, south of Chester, on the banks of the River Dee, close to the Welsh border in Cheshire. When Speed was a young man, he worked for his father in his tailoring business. He eventually grew tired of this and ventured south, settling in London sometime around 1582. Whilst working in London, Speed’s keen interest and knowledge of history enabled him to become a member of The Society of Antiquaries, and it was here his interests came under the notice of Sir Fulke Greville. Greville was a capable administrator, and a man of means, and he secured Speed a position within the Customs Service. This gave Speed a guaranteed living, and subsequently allowed him the freedom to pursue his other interests in life, one of which was cartography. John Speed in time produced two extremely fine atlases. The first in 1612 was entitled 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain', which was the first atlas devoted to The British Isles only. It is suggested that Speed drew on earlier cartographic works by Christopher Saxton, and John Norden. The second great atlas was his 1627 'A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World'. This was the very first atlas of the world to be published by an Englishman. This was a much larger and more ambitious undertaking. As well as having all the maps of his earlier successful work, this later work had 28 additional maps. The four continents plus a double hemisphere world map, a further 23 maps showing European and Far Eastern maps, and perhaps, most importantly, of all from an English perspective; 3 maps of 'The Colonies of America'. John Speed died in 1629, only a few years after his second magnificent atlas had been published. Arader Galleries are proud to offer to you a truly wonderful selection of superbly conditioned, uncolored maps from this very attractive 1676 atlas by England’s foremost cartographer of the seventeenth century. For 40 years Arader Galleries has been well known for offering items of only the very highest quality and standards, and we will always strongly defend the provenance of all our items. I am pleased to say that these maps are in keeping with this fine tradition. The Isle of Wight, or 'Wit' as the French Normans called it, was created after the last Ice Age, when it became separated from the mainland. The island has many historic archaeological sites, ranging from fossils to Bronze and Iron Age artefacts. The island is extremely attractive, and Osborne House, close to East Cowes was the favourite summer residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The island, as you might expect, has had many 'visitors' over the centuries, ranging from; Roman, Saxon, Viking, Danish & Norman. A curious fact about the island is; for a very brief period in the middle of the fifteenth century, The Isle of Wight had a king (Henry de Beauchamp, the First Duke of Warwick) and was an independent kingdom - however, the king died without issue not long after being crowned. If you look closely at one of the heraldic crests, you will see his. King Charles I was incarcerated in Carisbrooke Castle, and then Hurst Castle whilst he learned of his fate by Cromwell and Parliament. Most of the towns on the island are on the coast, the exception being; the county town of Newport, which is centrally located. The Isle of Wight is fed by two main rivers; The Medina and theYar. Speed engraves the town of Newport, and curiously, the town of Southampton in Hampshire. In the Solent you will find ships, and a sea serpent off the southern coast. You may notice some of the many dangerous rocks, and points that make sailing around the island very hazardous. This description was prepared by Ian Williams of Arader Galleries; who has over 20 years experience in maps and decorative prints.

John Speed
BRECKNOCKSHIRE (BRECON)
|
Arader Galleries are proud to offer to you a truly wonderful selection of superb conditioned, uncolored maps from this very attractive 1676 atlas by England’s foremost cartographer of the seventeenth century. For 40 years Arader Galleries has been well known for offering items of only the very highest quality and standards, and we will always stand four square behind the provenance of all our items. I am pleased to say that these maps are in keeping with this fine tradition. One glance at John Speed’s 1676 map of Brecknockshire and it will show you that it is a rural and hilly and mountainous region. Two wonders of nature occur within the county; The Brecon Beacons, and the Black Mountains. Both are very popular tourist destinations for all kinds of physical and outdoor pursuits. Brecknockshire was one of the thirteen historic counties of Wales. The two main rivers that run through the county are; The rivers Usk and Wye. Brecknockshire as a county in its own right came into existence in 1535. The main towns are; Hay-on-Wye, which is a haven for bibliophiles everywhere. Brecon, which is a very pleasant market town. It has a Norman castle, and a medieval priory, which early last century was elevated to cathedral status. Builth Wells has historically always been militarily and economically important, due to its being situated on important trade routes, and on a crossing point on along an important river. As is normal with John Speed county maps, there is plenty of elaborate and thoughtful cartographic decoration on display. There is the Welsh coat of arms, a title cartouche, a graphic depiction of a battle, and its explanation, the 'Prince of Wales' feathers, and a lovely town plan of the county town of Brecon. Within the plan you will find the castle, a walled town, the college, a church, and the priory. This is a well balanced, attractive map of a truly delightful rural Welsh county. This description is prepared by Ian Williams of Arader Galleries, who has over 20 years experience in maps and decorative prints.

CARMINA QUINQUE ILLUSTRIUM POETARUM Additis nonnullis M. Antonii Flaminii libellis nunquam antea impresis.
|
Florentiae, Laurentium Torrentinum, 1552. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

With woodcut printer's device on title and verso colophon, woodcut initials. [1], 2-86, [1= colophon] ll.. First edition of a 'defense of women', by Domenico Bruni di Pistoia (fl. 1540-1550s). In four books he critically discusses the vices and virtues of women attributed to them by earlier writers. He cites exemplary actions of Judith, and the queens of the Amazons. In the fourth book he mentions that women are more excellent than men on many occasions. The book is dedicated to Eleonora de Medici di Toledo, Duchess of Florence (1522-1562) and Bruni celebrates the Duchess herself as 'donna illustre', offering her as a contemporary exemplum of a long list of virtues appropiate to the wife of a ruler. He draws flattering comparisons between a contemporary aristocratic woman and heroines of the past. A second edition was published in Milan by Antoni in 1559. First 3 ll. restored in upper margin, leaves 4-6 with small wormhole in uppermargin not affecting text; binding slightly bumped; some staining. Paris: Adrien Turnèbe 1552 - EDITIO PRINCEPS, title-page a little soiled, a trifle browned, pp. 24, 4to, twentieth-century marbled boards, good ?On the nature of the primary material substances, Theophrastus accepted Aristotle?s theory of four qualitatively distinguished simple bodies. In the introductory sections of De igne, however, he gives a penetrating criticism of the theory . if fire cannot exist without fuel, it cannot rightly be called a primary substance or principle, since it is neither simple nor prior to its substrate? (DSB).Turnèbe published a Latin translation with his own notes later in the same year - his usual pattern of publishing, repeated often in the 1550s. (The colophon of the Latin printing is dated ?1552 pridie Cal. Ianuar.,? i.e. 31st December, either of 1552 or possibly 1551, but most catalogues for some reason give the date as 1553.) The Latin and the Greek were published separately but are often, though not invariably, found together. This, the first printing of the Greek text, is the scarcer of the two on its own. Greswell states that all of Turnèbe?s 1552 Greek editions ?are of singular beauty, and held by the curious in high estimation.? (Adams T580) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Novae Insulae XXVI Nova Tabula [1st Map of the continent of America]
|
Rare 1552 Latin edition of Munster's map of America, the earliest map to show all of North and South America in a true continental form. The first edition ofMunster'smap appeared inhisGeographia, first published in 1540. However, it was the map's inclusion in the 1544 edition of Munster'sCosmographiathat forever caused America to be the name of the New World, perpetuating Waldseemuller's choice of names in a popular and widely disseminated work. Munster's map is the earliest map of all of America and the first to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). The depiction of North America is dominated by one of the most dramatic geographic misconceptions to be found on early maps—the so-called Sea of Verrazzano. The Pacific cuts deeply intov into North America so that the part of the coastline at this point is a narrow isthmus between two oceans. This was the result of Verrazzano mistaking the waters to the west of the Outer Banks, the long barrier islands along North Carolina as the Pacific. The division of the New World between Spain and Portugal Spain and Portugal is recognized on the map by the Castille and Leon flag planted in Puerto Rico, here called Sciana. The map includes a host of firsts, too many to include in this description. Includes a very early appearance of the Straits of Magellan, along with his ship Victoria in the Pacific. Earliest appearance of Japan on a map, predating European contact and based solely legends, such as Marco Polo. The Yucatan Peninsula is shown as an Island. Lake Temistan empties into the Caribbean. The map depicts cannibals in South America and names Florida. The present example is a Latin text edition of Burden's State 6. It is the only state to include the latitude and longitude bars outside of the map image and one of the rarest of all editions of the map. (Basle, 1552) [color: Hand Colored, size: 13.25 x 10 inches, condition: VG]

"Novamente rivista & con somma diligenza ristampata. Firenze, appresso i Giunti, 1552, in-4, ff. 114, cart. rustico secentesco. Impresa tipogr. al titolo e in fine. Camerini I, 288.Smith. rara arithmetica, p. 132: ""Books 10 to 13 relate to algebra, and their chief interest attaches to the symbolism employed"". Riccardi I, 501: ""rara è pure la seguente ediz."" e descrive un esempl. della Palatina con il primo quaderno di 6 ff., senza la dedica."

John Speed
NORTHFOLK.(NORFOLK)
|
It has been suggested that Speed drew on earlier cartographic works by Christopher Saxton, and John Norden. Arader Galleries are proud to offer to you a truly wonderful selection of superb conditioned, uncolored maps from this very attractive 1676 atlas by England’s foremost cartographer of the seventeenth century. For 40 years Arader Galleries has been well known for offering items of only the very highest quality and standards, and we will always strongly defend the provenance of all our items. I am pleased to say that these maps are in keeping with this fine tradition. The county of Norfolk, in the Middle Ages was the most densely populated and most intensively farmed region in England. A combination of peat, excavated from the Norfolk Broads, wool and good arable land, allied with the new idea of 'crop rotation' all contributed to Norfolk becoming very wealthy indeed. The many parish churches and other religious monuments within the county testify to the great wealth Norfolk accumulated during this period. The city of Norwich was once the most prosperous city in the kingdom, save that of the capital London. Norwich has more medieval churches within it than any other provincial city. Norwich has a fine Norman castle, built in 1075, and a glorious Norman built cathedral, built between 1096 and 1145. When you look at Speed’s map of Norfolk, you will see many larger towns evenly scattered throughout. The county then has a second tier' of numerous smaller villages and hamlets. The rivers that run through the county are shown in detail, as indeed are all the numerous physical features. Speed decorates his map with a lovely town plan of Norwich. The city gates and bridges, the castle and the cathedral are all clearly marked. The map title is in open book form. There is a coat of arms, and an engraving of the 'Battle of North Walsham' in 1381, which was the last vestige of the earlier ‘Peasants Revolt’. Down the right side of the map Speed engraves all the arms of the county nobility. The Dukedom of Norfolk is the premier peerage in England, and also the premier Catholic peerage in England. This description was prepared by Ian Williams of Arader Galleries. He has 20 years experience in decorative maps.

John Speed
FLINTSHIRE.
|
- John Speed is a name that is synonymous with English cartography. Whilst working in London, Speed¿s keen interest and knowledge of history enabled him to become a member of The Society of Antiquaries, and it was here his interests came under the notice of Sir Fulke Greville. Arader Galleries are proud to offer to you a truly wonderful selection of superb condition, uncolored maps from this very attractive 1676 atlas by England¿s foremost cartographer of the seventeenth century. For 40 years Arader Galleries has been well known for offering items of only the very highest quality and standards, and we will always stand four square behind the provenance of all our items. I am pleased to say that these maps are in keeping with this fine tradition. The Welsh county of Flintshire is located in the far north west of Wales. Flintshire is surrounded by Cheshire to the east, Shropshire to the south and Denbigh is to the west. John Speed presents two town plans and a depiction of St. Winefrid¿s Well. In the lower left corner of the map, you will see the town plan of St. Asaph. The fourteenth century cathedral of the St.Asaph dates back to Celtic orders of the sixth century. In the corresponding upper right hand corner of the map, you will see the town plan for Flint, with its formidable castle standing aloof from the rest of the town. Flint castle was only a day¿s march from Chester, so was easy to supply and maintain. It was the first castle of King Edward¿s infamous 'Iron Ring'. This named Iron Ring was a chain of castles designed to encircle Northern Wales, to oppress the Welsh, and to keep them 'in their place'. The third and final inset is St. Winefrid¿s Well, a Holy-Well, situated in the town Hollywell in Flintshire. The well is the oldest continuously operating pilgrimage site in Britain. It is known as the 'Lourdes of Wales' because of its healing waters. Looking at Flintshire, it is a small, under populated rural county. Some of Speed¿s interesting embellishments are; a beautiful compass rose in the Irish sea, a terrifying sea monster, busily looking at ships in the River Dee. A depiction of two armies facing one another, together with an explanatory panel is seen under the plan of Flint. Some wonderful decorative calligraphy finishes the map off beautifully. This description was prepared by Ian Williams of Arader Galleries. He has over 20 years experience in maps and prints

& reliquis eius argumenti authoribus, quorum nomina sequenti pagella vis derelicet. Aeditio ultima, caeteris longe castigatior.Antwerp: Ioan. Steelsii, 1552. Thick sm. 8vo. Orig. vellum binding with yapp edges, rubbed and age-darkened, and with ink title on front cover. Remains of ink title on spine, and spine bands exposed. (48, 748, 40, 2pp.) With title-vign., and decorative initials. Errata page at end. Text in Latin. Pages crisp, slightly age-darkened, damp-stained on lower edge of some pages, and a small insect hole through lower part of all pages, neither of which affect the text. Pencil notation on ffep; pencil and ink notations on rear pastedown, and ink title on top edge. NOTE: There is some controversy about the authenticity of Annius' text; contemporary critics of Annius protested that all or part of his text, which he asserted was a translation of Berosus' original, was a clever forgery by Annius himself. Interestingly, Berosus' writing was also challenged, as he never produced the original manuscripts which he claimed to have used as his source texts. Berosus was a Chaldean priest who lived in the time of Alexander the Great and his immediate successors. He translated the history of his native country, Babylonia, into the Greek language, and dedicated the work to one of the Greek kings of Syria named Antiochus. His work is principally known through the fragments of Polyhistor and Apollodorus, two writers in the 1st century before the Christian era, who are quoted by Eusebius and Lyncellus.

Venetia, Domenico Giglio 1552.
