Histoire véritable et digne de mémoire de quatre Jacobins de Berne, Hérétiques & Sorciers, qui y furent Brulez : ensmble les finesses & meschancetez, desquelles ilz vsoyent envers un conteur de leur ordre : traduite d'Alemant. Genève (Jules G. Fick) 1867. IN-4, demi maroquin rouge à coin, dos à nerfs.
Réédition absolument conforme d'une rarissime et mystérieuse plaquette de 1549, sans nom ni lieu, relative au procès de quatre Jacobins de Bernes, brûlés comme hérétiques. L'affaire avait grand bruit dans toute la chrétienté au début du XVIe siècle, comme l'atteste les nombreuses traces laissées par le chroniqueurs bernois du temps. Anselme lui même à consacré près d'un volume à cette épineuse affaire, et sembla y voir les éléments précurseurs d'une révolution religieuse. Bien qu'il soit difficile d'en retrouver l'auteur, cette curieuse plaquette aussi violente qu'intriquante semble être due à la plume de Stumpf, que le Prieur de Saint Victor se serait chargé de traduire.Très bel exemplaire de cette source rarissime et très originale à propos d'un des événement marquants de la vie religieuse européenne au XVIe siècle. Ce livre est la seconde partie des "Antiquités juives". La première partie a été publiée 2 ans plus tôt. In Venigia, A presso Baldassar Costantini al Segno di. S. Giorgio, 1549. Murray cite une édition de 1612 et Graesse une autre 1564. Texte en Italien du 16e. Format : 11 sur 15 cm. 299 pages. Reliure en parchemin, restauration ancienne sur le dos et sur une partie des plats, titre manuscrit au dos, frontispice restauré avec marque typographique répétée en dernière page, belles lettrines dorées. Trou de vers en marge basse des 9 premiers feuillets, sans atteinte au texte. Bel exemplaire malgré les défauts cités. Après l'Histoire des juifs, « Les Antiquités juives » est une des oeuvres les plus célèbres de ce soldat, diplomate à la cour de Néron, commandant en tête en Galilée, médiateur entre judaïsme et paganisme, romain citadin, fils adoptif de Vespasien. Les "Antiquités juives" relatent l'histoire des Juifs depuis Abraham. Extrait de l'Encyclopédie Universalis : À sa naissance (an 1 du règne de Caligula), il reçut le prénom de Joseph et le patronyme de ben Mattithiahu (fils de Mathias), auquel il pouvait adjoindre ha-Cohen (le prêtre) puisqu'il appartenait à une très noble lignée sacerdotale. Son éducation fut centrée sur l'étude sacrée. À treize ans, il était en mesure d'interpréter les textes pour des prêtres ou des notables moins savants. En un temps où le judaïsme était divisé en trois principaux courants : sadducéen, pharisien, essénien, il s'intéressa à chacun d'eux avant d'opter pour le courant pharisien. C'est sans doute à la demande de Vespasien que Josèphe écrivit son Histoire de la guerre des Juifs contre les Romains. Il entreprit d'écrire toute l'histoire de son peuple depuis les origines jusqu'à la veille du conflit avec Rome, dans un vaste ouvrage en vingt livres, LES ANTIQUITÉS JUIVES. Il s'agissait de démontrer que ce peuple vaincu et donc décrié était d'une très haute antiquité (ce qui était synonyme de noblesse) et possédait de grands hommes. Dans la première partie (I à X), Josèphe suit de près les récits bibliques, mais les modifications qu'il y apporte laissent entrevoir l'apport de toute une tradition orale, que l'on retrouve plus tard dans le midrash. On y décèle également quelques explications rationalistes (par exemple à propos du passage de la mer Rouge) destinées à son public romain ou grec. Dans la seconde partie (XI à XX), qui correspond pour l'auteur à de l'histoire moderne et contemporaine, il suit d'abord le livre I des Maccabées, puis il développe le règne des derniers Hasmonéens, celui d'Hérode, l'ère des procurateurs dont il avait été question plus brièvement au début de La Guerre. Sur cette période, il est notre seule source, ce qui explique l'importance historique de son oeuvre. Au chapitre XVIII des Antiquités apparaît un bref passage relatif à Jésus connu sous le nom de Testimonium Flavianum. C'est à lui sans doute que l'oeuvre de Josèphe doit sa survie, puisque l'Église a pu la considérer de ce fait comme une sorte de « cinquième Évangile ». Cependant, il ne fait aucun doute aujourd'hui que ce passage (comme on a commencé à le soupçonner dès le XVIe siècle) constitue, sinon dans sa totalité, du moins partiellement, une interpolation due à une main pieuse. D'abord encensée par l'Église, son oeuvre fut remise en question par certains théologiens, catholiques notamment, en raison de ses divergences avec les récits évangéliques (dates du règne d'Hérode, du recensement de Quirinius, absence de mention du massacre des Innocents, cause de la mise à mort de Jean-Baptiste). Halbschweinslederband mit mod. ergänztem Pergamentbezug, Schweinslederteile mit schöner Rollenblindprägung. Hs. Rückenschildchen. Folio. Schöner und seltener Lyonnaiser Druck des Hauptwerks des italienischen Kanonikers. Der Kirchenrechtler Felino Maria Sandeo (1444-1503), nach seinem Geburtsort auch als Felinus bekannt, lehrte von 1466 bis 1474 in Ferrara, woher auch seine Familie stammte. Bis 1484 war er an der Universität von Pisa tätig; später wurde er Bischof von Penna und Atri sowie von Lucca. - Breitrandiges Exemplar mit zahlreichen Temoins; kaum fleckig. Vereinzelte Anstreichungen und Marginalien von alter Hand. Vorderer Innendeckel mit hs. Besitz- und Kaufvermerk des 18. Jh.s: "Ex libris Thomae Balth. Janowka \| emptus a Judaeo 45 x A1721. 7. May." Beim Besitzer, der das Exemplar um 45 Kreuzer "vom Juden" erwarb, handelt es sich um den um 1660 in Böhmen geborenen Magister der Weltweisheit und Organisten der Teynkirche in Prag, der bekannt ist als Verfasser des "ersten musikalischen Wörterbuchs der neueren Zeit" (Wurzbach X, zit. n. DBA I 600, 252). - Am Titelblatt des 1. Teils hs. Besitzvermerk eines Priesterhospitals: "Domus Emeritorum à Monte V. D. Prochaska 1750"; hier auch beidseitig etwas Textverlust durch Durchriebe (Löschung eines alten Besitzvermerks). Oberes Kapital etwas bestoßen. Der schöne Einband zeigt eine ausgezeichnet erhaltene Figurenrolle mit Darstellungen des Salvator (‘Data Est Mih[i] x’), David (‘De F[r]uctu Ve[ntris]’), Paulus (‘Apparuit Beni[gnitas]’) und Johannes (‘Ecce Agnus Dei’), 208:20 mm, das Paulusbild mit Hausmarke monogrammiert: WA (AW?), das Davidbild: R (Rolle und Marken nicht bei Haebler). Das schmale Mittelstück zeigt einen Bogenfries (im oberen und unteren Querriegel wiederholt; nicht bei Schunke, Schwenke-Slg.). - Sehr selten; nur 1 Ex. in internationalen Bibliotheken nachgewiesen (BSB); der 2. Es geht um Lehrbücher zur Physik, Ethik u. Dialectik des Aristoteles, teils in erweit., teils in EA. Hinter dem Haupttitel ist die 'Empfehlung' (iudicium) des Bischofs Ti(e)demann Giese (1480-1550, vgl. DBE IV 2 - NDB VI 379 - ADB IX 151 ff) vom 16.8.1546 abgedruckt, u. zwar in dessen Eigenschaft als Bischof von Culm (seit 1538) u. noch nicht von Ermland. Die beiden schwärmerischen Widm.epistel gelten Tid. Giese - die erste 'direct hinter' d. 'iudicium' - als Bischof d. 'Ermländ. Kirche' - und dann die ältere Widm. (zu Beginn des opus Teil I) noch als Bischof der Culmer Kirche. Mit seinem Ruf auf den Culmer Stuhl erhiellt Giese gleichzeitig das Coadjutor-Recht in der Nachfolge von Joh. Dantiscus als Bischof von Ermland, was nach dessen Ableben päpstlich am 20.5.1549 bestätigt wurde. Nur ein kurzes Wirken war ihm noch vergönnt. Nach Giese's plötzlich. Ableben am 23.10.1550 wurde er in der Frauenburger Kathedrale beigesetzt, wo sein Freund Kopernikus bereits seit 7 Jahren beigesetzt war. So sind sie im Tod wieder vereint. - Der Autor siedelte nach seiner mediz. Promotion 1513 nach Thorn, wo er ab 1515 als Arzt wirkte u. - auch an neuem Platz - seinen alten pädag. Dedicat. a Monsignor d’Aras e al Principe di Salerno. Contiene la corrispondenza del T. indirizzata a prelati, principi e letterati delle maggiori corti italiane: Annibal Caro, Cardinal Bembo, Papa Clemente VII, Conte Rangone, Duca di Camerino, Giulia Gonzaga, Ippolita Pallavicina, Principe di Salerno, Sperone Speroni, Stefano Colonna, il Vescovo di Brescia, il Cardinale di Carpi, e molti altri. Rara cinquecentina del diplomatico e letterato di origine bergamasca (Venezia 1493 - Ostiglia, Mn, 1569). Adams cita come prima ediz. quella di Valgrisi del 1551. L'ouvrage présenté ici, sans sa page de titre, est plutôt l'édition de 1549 décrite par Baudrier (X, p. 439) que celle de 1550 mentionnée à la main sur la page de garde blanche; cette dernière n'étant pas citée par Baudrier. Front. del 1° tomo fig. Tagli azzurri. Capilettera al secondo tomo. Nervi. Tracce di antichi tarli al marg. sup. di alcune pp. del 1° tomo che ledono solo alcune lettere del titolo alto, medesime tracce si trovano sugli ultimi due fogli bianchi (uno mancante dello spigolo superiore) e sulla p. interna del piatto post. Fioriture. Mende al d. e più lievi ai piatti. Dal primo tomo risulta mancante l'occhiello (registro A), mentre dal secondo risultano mancanti l'occhiello e il front. (registro A - A1). Il Tractato del Dominici è una rarissima opera ascetica del frate domenicano, beato, cardinale, fondatore nel 1406 del convento di S. Domenico di Fiesole, riformatore del proprio ordine e tenace cooperatore alla cessazione dello Scisma d'Occidente. Esempio di prosa volgare trecentesca. Alcune notizie biografiche sono contenute nella Epistola del Frate N. che occupa il secondo e terzo foglio preliminare. Opera di rara reperibilità e, nel complesso, in condizioni molto buone. Edition Originale de la traduction latine donnée par Ioannes Guinterius des œuvres d’Alexandre de Tralles. Alexandre de Tralles "was the only one of the Byzantine compilers who displayed any special originality... His account of insanity, gout and the disenteryc and choleraic disorders are above the average. He has a highly original chapter on intestinal worms and vermifuges, is said to have been the first to mention rhubarb, and first recommended colchicum (hermodactyl) in gout" (Garrison). Alexandre de Tralles accordait une importance particulière à la diététique et son ouvrage contient de nombreux chapitres sur l’alimentation. La fin du volume est occupée par la traduction du traité de la Peste du médecin arabe Rhazes. Jean Gonthier d’Andernac (1505-1574) médecin et humaniste allemand était un helléniste distingué. En 1525 il se fixa à Paris où il fréquenta Budé, Lascaris et le cardinal du Bellay. Ses traductions de médecins grecs de l’antiquité sont réputées. Finely printed first illustrated edition of a famous didactic poem by Spieghel, with a portrait of one of the nine Muse for each of the seven books, by Nolpe after Goltzius. A libertine poem and the most important work of the Catholic humanist Spieghel (1549-1612), it was supposed to have had one chapter for each of the nine muses but was left unfinished and published posthumously in 1614. It discusses sin, guilt and free will, and defends the notion that virtue is its own reward. The seven books are followed by an additional poem "Uyterste-Wil ofte Vaderlijke Vermaningh" and (with its own part-title but an integral part of the book), the "Byspraax Almanak" with about a thousand edifying proverbs arranged as a perpetual calendar.A very good copy, with only an unobtrusive water stain in the upper inside corner. Lacking (as usual) the last leaf, probably blank. Although the endpapers do not show the waterstain of the text leaves, their paper dates from ca. 1650. Two classic treatises on food and diet, including their medical aspects, well illustrated with dozens of charming woodcuts, together with a treatise on the human body and mind, all in Frankfurt editions of the 1580s. The first work is an anonymous poem on hygiene, drink, diet, and the beneficial properties of plants, with extensive commentaries. The woodcuts show people at the dinner table, wine casks, people drinking and vomiting, various edible plants and animals, and the production of foods and drinks. The poem dates back to at least the thirteenth-century and is associated with the famous school of Medicine at Salerno in southern Italy. There is little grounds for its ascription to Jean de Milan, or to Arnauld de Villeneue (ca. 1240-1311) who is supposed to have added many of the notes. It appeared in print many times, beginning ca. 1480 and usually under the title, Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum , but in 1551 Christian Egenolph at Frankfurt published a new edition under the present title, with woodcut illustrations and revised by Johannes Curio (d. 1561). Curio's text remained the standard for many decades.Elias Eoban or Helios Eobanus Hessus (1488-1540), was one of Germany's leading Latin poets. Christian Egenolph at Frankfurt published his present educational poem on diet and health in 1551, the same year as Curio's edition of the Regimen , and the two remained closely associated. From 1556, Egenolph illustrated Eobanus's work with a selection of the Curio woodcuts. At the end it includes several related short verses by Eobanus himself, Johannes Placotomus, Walafrid Strabo and Baptista Fiera.Matthaus Dresser (1536-1607), a humanist and classical scholar in Erfurt, wrote on a wide variety of subjects and first published his account of the human body and mind in 1581, and it went through several editions. It discusses the body part by part and the mind topic by topic, often in the form of questions and answers. Included are questions of locomotion and of the decline of the body and mind. It draws on classical sources and in many cases gives Greek and German translations or descriptions of Latin medical terms.With an early owner's initials (W.H.) and later library stamp on the title-page. In very good condition, with minor marginal waterstains at the beginning of the first work, the paper very lightly browned, and a small marginal hole repaired in one leaf. Trou de vers en marge basse des 9 premiers feuillets, sans atteinte au texte. Bel exemplaire malgré les défauts cités. Après l'Histoire des juifs, « Les Antiquités juives » est une des oeuvres les plus célèbres de ce soldat, diplomate à la cour de Néron, commandant en tête en Galilée, médiateur entre judaïsme et paganisme, romain citadin, fils adoptif de Vespasien. Les "Antiquités juives" relatent l'histoire des Juifs depuis Abraham. Extrait de l'Encyclopédie Universalis : À sa naissance (an 1 du règne de Caligula), il reçut le prénom de Joseph et le patronyme de ben Mattithiahu (fils de Mathias), auquel il pouvait adjoindre ha-Cohen (le prêtre) puisqu'il appartenait à une très noble lignée sacerdotale. Son éducation fut centrée sur l'étude sacrée. À treize ans, il était en mesure d'interpréter les textes pour des prêtres ou des notables moins savants. En un temps où le judaïsme était divisé en trois principaux courants : sadducéen, pharisien, essénien, il s'intéressa à chacun d'eux avant d'opter pour le courant pharisien. C'est sans doute à la demande de Vespasien que Josèphe écrivit son Histoire de la guerre des Juifs contre les Romains. Il entreprit d'écrire toute l'histoire de son peuple depuis les origines jusqu'à la veille du conflit avec Rome, dans un vaste ouvrage en vingt livres, LES ANTIQUIT.S JUIVES. Il s'agissait de démontrer que ce peuple vaincu et donc décrié était d'une très haute antiquité (ce qui était synonyme de noblesse) et possédait de grands hommes. Dans la première partie (I à X), Josèphe suit de près les récits bibliques, mais les modifications qu'il y apporte laissent entrevoir l'apport de toute une tradition orale, que l'on retrouve plus tard dans le midrash. On y décèle également quelques explications rationalistes (par exemple à propos du passage de la mer Rouge) destinées à son public romain ou grec. Dans la seconde partie (XI à XX), qui correspond pour l'auteur à de l'histoire moderne et contemporaine, il suit d'abord le livre I des Maccabées, puis il développe le règne des derniers Hasmonéens, celui d'Hérode, l'ère des procurateurs dont il avait été question plus brièvement au début de La Guerre. Sur cette période, il est notre seule source, ce qui explique l'importance historique de son oeuvre. Au chapitre XVIII des Antiquités apparaît un bref passage relatif à Jésus connu sous le nom de Testimonium Flavianum. C'est à lui sans doute que l'oeuvre de Josèphe doit sa survie, puisque l'.glise a pu la considérer de ce fait comme une sorte de « cinquième .vangile ». Cependant, il ne fait aucun doute aujourd'hui que ce passage (comme on a commencé à le soupçonner dès le XVIe siècle) constitue, sinon dans sa totalité, du moins partiellement, une interpolation due à une main pieuse. D'abord encensée par l'.glise, son oeuvre fut remise en question par certains théologiens, catholiques notamment, en raison de ses divergences avec les récits évangéliques (dates du règne d'Hérode, du recensement de Quirinius, absence de mention du massacre des Innocents, cause de la mise à mort de Jean-Baptiste). Alamanni was born in Florence and was a friend of Machiavelli. Perhaps acting on encouragement of Machiavelli, Alamanni joined an unsuccessful conspiracy against Guilio de Medici, later Pope Clement VII. On Clements accession, he was force to flee to Venice and later to France, where he wrote the majority of his works which included Eclogues; Poesies Lyriques; Satires Morales, etc. However, his fame has come to rest on the heroic poem "Girone Il Cortese." It derives from the original French roman of the same title written in 1235. The central theme of Arthur's war against Meliades soon dissolves into a succession of individual adventures, in the tradition of the Grail quest romances and all the grand Arthurian themes are treated; ie. the spirit of chivalry, love, friendship, betrayal, etc. Arthurian romances enjoyed great popularity in Italy from the mid-thirteenth century on, and spawned Italian originals. Exemplaire de Caspar Bauhin (1560 - 1624), celebre botaniste et anatomiste d'origine francaise, ne' a' Bale, avec son ex-libris manuscrit, suivi du "nunc Johan Caspari 1618" de son fils Jean, qui fut Professeur de botanique a' l'Universite de Bale et futur medecin de Louis XIV.Edition qui est absente de la fameuse Bibliotheca Erasmiana Bruxellensis de la Bibliotheque Royale Albert Ier de Belgique.Bonne edition (qui sera reimprimee a' l'identique), donnee par Eberhardius Tappius (Eberhard Tappe), humaniste allemand (vers 1500 a' Lunen dans la Ruhr - 1541 /1542), collectionneur de proverbes de diverses origines europeennes, qui furent publies en 1545.Travail de ver en fond de gorge en pied des 15 premiers feuillets, sans gravite, petites mouillures eparses tres claires, sinon bon exemplaire dans l'ensemble ; mouillure sombre, quelques usures ou grignotage en bordure d'un plat mais bon etat egalement pour cette reliure de l'epoque, solide et avec ses fermoirs. Marca giolitina al frontesp. ed in fine, carattere corsivo, cc. 61, (3). Prima edizione di questa celebre fonte di storia dell’arte, testualmente imperniata sulla figura di Michelangelo, tenendo tuttavia presente l’opera dei fiamminghi. Importanti sono le notizie in essa contenute, relative ad opere e collezioni d’arte site nelle varie città, e può quindi configurarsi come una sorta di breve ‘vademecum’ artistico delle principali città d’arte italiane: Roma, Napoli, Pavia, Parma, Mantova, Venezia (una speciale menzione e' dedicata all'altare del Durer in S. In-4 plein vélin du XIXe siècle, dos lisse et fleuronné, pièce de titre grenat, tranches rouges, 152-[8]-176-[11] pages, figures gravées sur bois dont certaines à pleine page, grande lettrines à fond criblé. (Coins légèrement usés. Petite mouillure claire en tête de volume, petit manque marginal à un feuillet.) Seconde édition chez Estienne de cette compilation des principales oeuvres du diplomate Lazare BAIF (né au commencement du XVIe siècle et mort en 1547). Conseiller du roi François Ier, auquel cet ouvrage est dédié, il fut maître des requêtes et ambassadeur de France à Venise et en Allemagne. La majeure partie du volume est consacrée à l'architecture navale et à la navigation des anciens avec le traité De Re Navali illustré de 21 bois gravés. Il est suivi du De Re vestiaria, illustré de 3 grands bois et, en pagination continue, du De Vasculis liber, curieux traité sur les vases antiques, illustré de 7 figures gravées sur bois, dont 6 à pleine page. La dernière partie du volume contient l'une des plus anciennes études sur les couleurs, le De Coloribus libellus de l'humaniste italien Antonio TELESIO (1482-1512) où ce dernier traite des couleurs en grammairien. La première partie reproduit l’édition de 1523 donnée par Josse Bade; la deuxième contient des ouvrages ajoutés par le nouvel éditeur Gabriel Dupuiherbault: 'Sermonum et exhortationum Joannis Tritemii libri II' - 'De disciplina monastica libellus ex IV tractatulis D. Entirely ruled in double red rules throughout. Lilac library stamp of St. Hugh's Parkminster on margin of TP. A few ink spots to one opening and corner of 8 leaves repaired with completion of a few words done long ago in neat ink. Final leaf with edges strengthened on blank verso. A lovely clean copy.
