AUGUSTINE, Saint (attrib.), and
Sinte Augustinus vierige Meditatien oft Aendachten. Antwerp, Hieronymous Verdussen, 1603. 16mo. 5 parts in 1 volume. With a general title-page, part-titles to parts 2-4 and drop-titles to part 5 and its appendix, each of the four title-pages with a woodcut illustration (1-3 identical); 41 additional woodcut illustrations in the text; 1 woodcut illustration used 4 times as a tailpiece (3 times in a scrollwork frame); 1 historiated woodcut
      - (1), 84, (2); (1), "71" [= 72]; (1), 73-108; (1), 110-"138" [= 146]; (1), "140"-"166" [= 148-174], (1 blank) ll. Bib. Cath. Neerl. Imp. 4921; Anet Cat. (2 copies); NCC (2 copies); STC Vlaanderen (3 copies); cf. Belg. Typ. 5127 (1548 ed.); J.J. Lub, ed., Sinte Augustijs Hantboec, Assen, 1962. Anthoon van Hemert’s Middle Dutch translation of the devotional Meditationes, Manuale and Soliloquia sometimes attributed to Saint Augustine, published together with Saint Bernard’s meditations, a work sometimes ascribed to Saint Anselm, and as an appendix to the last work a prayer to Saint Anselm. The charming woodcuts (mostly about 4 x 5 cm) show a wide variety of biblical scenes. This translation, first published at Antwerp in 1548, went through at least seven editions before 1700. All five works share a single series of printer’s signatures, but the first is separately paginated. Although all but the last have their own title-pages, all but one begin in the middle of a gathering, so that they were probably not issued separately. The titles to parts 2 to 5 and to the appendix to part 5 read: Sinte Augustinus innighe Alleenspraken der Sielen tot Godt (L8-V); Sinte Augustinus Hantboecxken vander Aenschouwinghen Christi (X-2B5); Die Devote Meditatien oft Aendachten vande Heyligen ende Honichvloeyenden Leeraer Sinte Barnardus (2B6-2G3); De Straele der Goddelijcker Liefden. Die welcke die sommighe Sinte Anselmo toe schrijven (2G4-2K1r); and Een Devoot Ghebedt Sinte Anselmi om Vreese te Verwecken in eenen Sondighen Mensche (2K1v-2K7). The title-page to the second work calls Van Hemert (d. 1560) "Regulier by Eyndoven," presumably meaning a Regular at the Mariënhage Augustine Monastery in Eindhoven. With early owners’ inscriptions by Margareta Hendrina t’Seraerts and Dick van Halmale. t’Seraerts was probably a member of the noble family active in Brabant and Brussels in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. In good condition, with only a small tear sslightly affecting the woodcut on the title-page and minor marginal worm holes in a few leaves. A rare early Middle Dutch edition of a popular devotional work.

The first complete edition in Italian and the first edition of Gastaldi's maps (including the first two copperplate maps devoted to North America), and the first octavo edition of Ptolemy. The translation, including Münster's commentaries, was made by Pierro Andrea Mattioli, the famous botanist and translator of Dioscorides. The only earlier Italian version of Ptolemy was the metrical paraphrase of Berlinghieri, Florence, ca. 1482 (Goff B342). Gastaldi's Ptolemaic maps are based on the the Basel woodcuts of Münster's various editions, but his modern maps are independent of these. They mark the revival of engraving in editions of Ptolemy, this being the first full series of engravings made since the incunable editions of Bologna, Rome, and Florence (Berlinghieri). "This edition of Ptolemy's Geography was the most comprehensive atlas produced between Martin Waldseemüller's Geographiae of 1513 and the Abraham Ortelius Theatrum of 1570. It was the first to contain regional maps of the American continent....

Antonii Coccii Sabellici commentariis, nihil annotatu dignum dissimulantibus. Jo. Baptistae Egnatii Veneti, Annot. in Suetonium. Annotata in eundem, & loca aliquot restitutae per D. Erasmum Roterodamum.
Antwerp, Joh. Loëus (Jan van der Loe), 1548. - 8vo. Later boards. With woodcut printer's device on title and many woodcut initials in text. (24), 661, (1 blank) pp. First edition published by Jan van der Loe (Johannes Loëus), who printed many editions of classical authors between ca. 1542 and 1560). This edition Van der Loe prabably re-printed from the Basel edition by Henric Petri from 1542.The book is dedicated by Hieronymus Gemusaeus to Guilielmus Yzernaeus, councillor of the French King (f. (2)v-(3)v. The Preface to Suetonius by Angelus Politianus follows on f. (4)r-(11)v, f. (12) being blank. The lives of the twelve Roman Emperors - Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian - are on pp. 1-626 together with the commentary and annotations by Marcus Antonius Coccius Sabellicus (1436-1506), a scholar and historian from Venice who authored a history of the world in 1504. He was a pupil of Pomponius Laetus, was professor of eloquence at Udino and Venice. In 1487 he was appointed as a curator of the San Marco Library. The text is followed by the annotations on Suetonius by Joannes Baptista Egnatius (ca. 1478-1553) on pp. 627-43, and those of Erasmus on pp. 644-58, a mention of Suetonius by Ausonius (pp. 658-9), an annotation on the name 'Caesar'(p. 660), and a short 'Vita' by Philippus Beroaldus on p. 661.Suetonius was born the son of Suetonius Laetus, who probably came from Hippo Regius (Annaba, Algeria ). He was a close friend to Senator and letter-writer Pliny the Younger. Pliny describes him as 'quiet and studious, a man dedicated to writing'. Through Pliny, Suetonius came into favour with Trajan and Hadrian. Under Trajan he served as secretary of studies (precise functions are uncertain) and director of Imperial archives. Under Hadrian, he became the Emperor's secretary. In 122, Hadrian dismissed him for disrespectful behaviour towards Empress Vibia Sabina. Suetonius may have later regained imperial favor under Hadrian and returned to his position. He is mainly remembered as the author of the famous De Vita Caesarum ("About the Lives of the Caesars", best known in English as "The Twelve Caesars"), his only extant work except for the brief lives and other fragments noted below. The Twelve Caesars, probably written in Hadrian's time, is a collective biography of the Roman Empire's first leaders. The book was dedicated to a friend Gaius Septicius Clarus, a prefect of the Praetorian Guard in 119. The work tells the tale of each Caesar's life according to a set formula: the descriptions of appearance, omens, family history, quotes, and then a history, often full of spicy, erotic, often pornographic, shocking and cruel details, are given in a consistent order for each Caesar. Good complete copy with many contemporary annotations and underlinings and ownership's entry of Dr. J.W.L. Bernbrik?, Nürnberg, 22.4.1875; many mis-numberings.- (Title soiled and damaged (repaired, almost without loss of text, sl. stained). Belg. Typ. 6808; Machiels S-640; STC Dutch p. 194; Adams S-2045 (3 copies, all incomplete). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Julij.WITH: Die ongevaluweerde Gouden ende silveren Munte van diverschen Coninckrijcken, Hertochdommen, Graefschappen, Heerlicheden, Landen, ende Steden.Amsterdam, Jan Ewoutsz., 1560. Two works in one volume. 8vo. With portrait of Charles V on first title, and printer's device on title second work, printer's device on final leaf second work, 37 leaves with illustrations of coins in the first work, and 110 leaves in the second work, most leaves printed on both sides, interleaved with blank leaves. Contemporary vellum, one suede tie remaining.
      - (40); (110) ll, all interleaved. BMC STC Dutch, p. 140 and p. 138; Moes 131 and 134; cf. Machiels K-247.Two very rare works on the value of current money in the Netherlands, commissioned by the general mintmasters. The Ordonnantie statuyt, ende Permissie vanden gouden ende silveren penningen is an official survey of valid coins in the Low Countries and their value. The value is indicated on the illustrations and in two leaves at the end of the first work. The privilege on the verso of the title is dated 1548 and three issues were published in the Southern Netherlands in that year. A second privilege was signed at Brussels in 1550, and four more issues were published in the Southern Netherlands between 1551 and 1555. Jan Ewoutsz. printed the North Netherlands version after copies of his Belgian counterpart, Joos Lambrecht from Ghent. Moes lists five issues from 1557 till 1560 (Moes 120, 123, 130-132), which contain minor deviations in contents, layout and spelling. The portrait of Charles V on the title-page has his coat of arms and device, with the additional text "Carolus Quintus Imperator Max Pater Patrie Felix Semper Augustus" and the year "1560." On the verso of the title, there is the privilege granted in 1548 and signed 1550. Contrary to the copy described by Machiels, our copy does not have "1560" in the colophon. The second work is the most extensive issue of a survey of European currency. Both works contain coins from several countries, dukedoms, counties, and cities, such as Spain, Portugal, Rome, Venice, Savoye, France, England, Scotland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, German cities and counties, and the Netherlands. De ongeualuweerde Gouden ende silveren Munte was likewise first published in the Southern Netherlands. This time Jan Ewoutsz. even copied the printer's device of Joos Lambrecht in his copy, an oaktree with a reaper and the words "Cessent Solita Dum Meliora Satis Quercus." Underneath the device is the privilege of 1551. According to Moes, Ewoutsz. hoped to boost his sales by including the device of the previous editions. There were four issues, in 1558 (Moes 122), 1559 (Moes 129) and two issues in 1560 (Moes 133 and 134). Our copy is the final and most extensive issue. It also carries illustrations on the recto of the final leaf. According to Moes, the final gathering is O1-8, but this must be O1-6. The total number of leaves is therefore 110 and not 112.Some damage to E8 (first work) and F1 (second work); some coins and printer's device second work coloured with paint or pencil.Very well-preserved copies of these rare works.

The first complete edition in Italian and the first edition of Gastaldi's maps (including the first two copperplate maps devoted to North America), and the first octavo edition of Ptolemy. The translation, including Munster's commentaries, was made by Pierro Andrea Mattioli, the famous botanist and translator of Dioscorides. The only earlier Italian version of Ptolemy was the metrical paraphrase of Berlinghieri, Florence, ca. 1482 (Goff B342). Gastaldi's Ptolemaic maps are based on the the Basel woodcuts of Munster's various editions, but his modern maps are independent of these. They mark the revival of engraving in editions of Ptolemy, this being the first full series of engravings made since the incunable editions of Bologna, Rome, and Florence (Berlinghieri)."This edition of Ptolemy's Geography was the most comprehensive atlas produced between Martin Waldseemuller's Geographiae of 1513 and the Abraham Ortelius Theatrum of 1570. It was the first to contain regional maps of the American continent. Giocomo Gastaldi had the maps beautifully engraved on copper. This was a turning point, from now on the majority of cartographic works used this medium. As it was a harder material than wood it gave the engraver the ability to render more detail. Born in Villafranca, Piedmont, Gastaldi became Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic, then a powerhouse of commerce and trade. He sought the most up to date geographical information available, and became one of the greatest cartographers of the sixteenth century" (Burden). Most of the thirty-four maps of the modern world are entirely new, including seven relating to the Americas. Among these is Nueva Hispania tabula nova, showing the Mississippi and Florida area. "[Tierra Nueva] is the first map produced of the east coast. It is among the earliest to relate the discoveries of Jacques Cartier's voyages to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and those of Giovanni di Verrazzano. The latter was exploring for a passage to Asia on behalf of Francis I, the King of France. This was the first French voyage in the waters of North America" (Burden). .

Ouvrages Anon., cols. 384-385; STCN (2 copies); Mennonite Encyclopedia I, p. 535.First edition of an anonymous French anti-Mennonite history of the Mennonites, an enlarged translation of Lambertus Hortensius's Tumultum Anabaptisarum liber unus (1548), the translation and revisions sometimes ascribed to the Jesuit Catrou. The 17 engraved plates depict baptism, riots, executions and the well-known scene of naked Mennonites running through the streets.Francois Catrou (1659-1737) made additions of his own to Hortensius's original Latin edition, which described only the Anabaptist riots at Münster and Amsterdam between 1534 and 1535. Among other things, he included a more up-to-date history of the Mennonites and a little about their doctrine. Although various sources say that the historical value is small and many of the accounts exaggerated, they also say that this antipathetic account of the Mennonites influenced French Catholic opinion and must have proved popular, with at least one more printing before the enlarged edition under the title, Histoire du Fanatisme des Religions Protestantes in 1706.With a ca. 1900 bookplate of the Crozer Theological Seminary, and inked and embossed library stamps. In good condition, with a browned stripe across 2 leaves and a few small wormholes. First anonymous expanded translation of Hortensius' Tumultum Anabaptisarum liber unus, by Catrou, with 17 engraved plates.

BUDE, Guillaume.
