First edition in Italian and first edition in a modern language, folio, 242 leaves, large woodcut device on colophon and on verso of final leaf; woodcut arms on title-p.; geometrical woodcut diagrams in the margins throughout; a good, complete copy in dirty old vellum, recased in the 19th century, with extensive paper repair to margins of the title-p. and following leaf, also with paper repairs to corners of a number of pages throughout; some leaves washed. The translation and commentary is by Niccolo Tartaglia, one of the most noted mathematicians of the 16th century who here has added his own preface, commentary and eulogy on the utility of mathematics. According to Stillman Drake, Galileo at Work, pp. 2-4, it is probably this translation that was used by Galileo. "Tartaglia's Italian translation of Euclid�the first published translation of the Elements into any living language of Europe�was an event of great importance to the progress of mathematics, and indeed of all applied sciences. For the first time the principal treasury of rigorous mathematical reasoning was open to men who knew neither Greek nor Latin. The implications of that event for the science of mechanics were great because literacy in Europe was very high, especially among engineers and artisans" (Drake & Drabkin, Mechanics in Sixteenth Century Italy, pp. 21- 22). Strasbourg: Knobloch, 1543. Scarce first edition of the first edition of Vitruvius published in Germany, illustrated with reduced copies of the woodcuts found in the 1521 Como edition; also containing an edition of Frontinus on aqueducts, the most important ancient treatise on the subject, as well as the second edition (first c. 1500) of an important text by Nicolaus of Cusa containing the first experiment in plant physiology. The first edition of Vitruvius published outside Italy, Ryff!s redaction (which preceded his German translation of the work by five years) is his first piece of scholarship in the field of architecture. Walther Hermann Ryff!s reputation was cemented by his Vitruvian editions: he !skillfully won himself a readership scarcely familiar even with such terms as !architect! and !architecture!! (Kruft p. 71). Ryff (Rivius, d. 1548) was a humanist-trained doctor and mathematician from Nuremberg, who !had an extensive knowledge of published Renaissance writings on architectural theory. (A year before his translation of Vitruvius he published a substantial volume of texts and commentaries on the subject, in German, from mainly Italian sources)! (ibid p. 470). There are two known states (or issues) of this edition; that offered here contains a preface by Messerschmidt, as opposed to the author.Following the text of Vitruvius are Frontinus!s important work on the aqueducts of Rome, and the treatise on !Static Experiments! by Nicolaus de Cusa. !In this he records the famous experiment, antedating Hales 200 years, of weighing earth and seeds, then the resulting plants, their ashes, and the earth in which they had grown! (Osler 7465), and establishing that plants absorb something of weight from the air. This is considered the first experiment in plant physiology in modern times, and incidentally, the first formal proof that air has weight (see H. Viets, !De staticis experimentis of Nicolaus Cusanus,! in Annals of Medical History (1922), pp. 115-35 and R. Benedict, !The first experiment in plant physiology,! in Science (1939), pp. 411-12). The treatise was first published at Strasbourg about 1500 (Goff N-97); this is its second appearance in print. * VD16 V-1763; Fowler 401; Berlin Katalog 1806; Adams V-906; Cicognara 707; not in Millard, Northern European.. 4to. Bound in early stiff vellum, raised bands on spine, with title neatly stenciled. Ownership inscription of Lorenz Vibrosch (?) on title; annotated through book VII with subject headings in what is likely a 17th-century hand. Some toning and light, even browning; iron in ink annotations occasionally bleeding through extreme outer margin, with minor loss to annotation and the blank margin supporting it. Withal, a fresh, unwashed copy, with good strikes of the woodcuts.

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION IN LATIN OF THE CORNERSTONE TEXTS OF WORLD THEATRE AND DRAMA. Translated by Ioanne Baptista Gabia Veronensi. The Greek text was first printed by Aldus Manutius in 1502, and it is very surprising that it was another 40 year before the text appeared in a language which made it accessible to most scholars, although separate editions of the Antigone and Electra had been published in translation. Sophocles has been called the father of Modern theatre and the Homer of tragedy.OAccording to Aristotle in the Poetics, Sophocles was an innovator in tragedy: he added a third to the previously accepted two actors, introduced Oscene paintingO, and increased the chorus from twelve to fifteen; he also abandoned the Aeschylean practice of writing trilogies on related events instead giving each play a self-contained plot....His characters were admired by Aristotle for being Olike ourselves only noblerO; his heroes and heroines are placed in circumstances in which they must act, and by their actions, which often have tragic consequences, they show their heroic stature. (16), 512, (16) pp. Rare first edition of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates of Cos (460-370 BC), the father of Medicine, edited and translated into Latin by the famous first Leyden professor of medicine Johannes Heurnius (1543-1601). The aphorisms of Hippocrates are the earliest collection of the kind. It is a series of observations from which the patient's affliction could be deduced and treatment prescribed. Their broad application made them exceptionally valuable to medical practitioners of the time. Included are notable and often invoked phrases as: 'Life is short, [the] art long' and 'The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself, but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate'.The translater and editor Joannes Heurnius (Jan van Heurne) had studied at the Hieronymus School in his native town, under a.o. Georgius Macropedius. Afterwards he continued his studies in Louvain (with Gemma Frisius), Paris, where he developed an interest in surgery and finally Padua, the cradle of European medical education, in 1567. In Padua Heurnius became acquainted with the teaching of medical students at the bedside; this innovation had been introduced by Battista da Monte some decades before. He graduated in Padua in 1571 and became immediately court physician of Francois Perrenot, the nephew of Count Granvelle. He held this position until 1573, when he returned to his native town, where he practiced until 1581, when he was appointed professor of medicine at the Leiden University. He was also the physician of William the Silent and Prince Maurits. He introduced for the first time bedside teaching for medical students in Northern Europe. The 'Series lectionum' of the Laiden University annouce lectures of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates in 1599.Apparently the translation by Heurnius was very successful. Re-editions appeared in 1607 (in Leiden and Antwerp), 1609, 1611 - both by the Officina Plantiniana at Leiden -, a 'second edition' was published in 1623 by J. le Maire at Leiden; further editions: 1615 (Lyon, Widow of Ant. de Harsy) and 1690 in Jena. Good copy with ms. ownership's entries on cover and title and some contemporary annotations.- (Binding a bit wrinkled, front hinge loose). Martin Gymnicus: Cologne 1543. - Blindstamp design consists of a series of urns and couples. Text in Latin . 736 pp. Vallae seemed to have a habit of getting into scrapes. After riduculing the law in Pavia, he fled to Naples where he became the Secretary to Alfonso of Aragon. In 1444, he questioned the composition of the Apostles Creed, tried for heresy but luckily his patron King Alfonso had the trial discontinued. "De Lingua Latine" was first published in 1444 and placed the study of Latin in a more scientific basis. Vallae delighted in controversy, at one point urging the Romans to deprive the pope of the papacy. He also denied that the religious state was the perfect state and that the monks were guilty of arrogance in that regard. The translation and commentary is by Niccolo Tartaglia, one of the most noted mathematicians of the 16th century who here has added his own preface, commentary and eulogy on the utility of mathematics. According to Stillman Drake, Galileo at Work, pp. 2-4, it is probably this translation that was used by Galileo. "Tartaglia's Italian translation of Euclid - the first published translation of the Elements into any living language of Europe - was an event of great importance to the progress of mathematics, and indeed of all applied sciences. For the first time the principal treasury of rigorous mathematical reasoning was open to men who knew neither Greek nor Latin. Imprint and date from colophon, Latin text, Francoforti, ex officina Petri Brubachii, 1543. 12mo, 130 x 90 mm, 5 x 3½ inches, publisher's Janus device on title page and on colophon leaf, a few woodcut headpieces and initials, leaves (16), 250 (numbered on rectos only), (2) - colophon and a blank, pagination a little erratic in places, but catchwords and register correct, collated and guaranteed complete, bound in antique quarter leather over blue paper boards, raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments, gilt lettered morocco label, all edges red. Binding worn, a few scrapes to surface paper on covers, board edges and corners showing cardboard, upper hinge cracked slightly at head and tail with slight chipping to leather, head of spine slightly worn, spine rubbed, signature of James Boswell's nephew (Samuel Johnson's biographer) on front pastedown, dated 1811, small stamp of Boswell family arms with motto Vraye Foi at foot of colophon page, brief note about the book on front endpaper, 2 different signatures on title page which is a little dusty, intermittent dampstaining throughout mostly to margins, mostly pale, occasionally light brown, no loss of legibility anywhere, 1 underlining, 2 pointing hands in the margin. Binding tight and firm. A good copy. Carion's Chronica, a universal history from the Creation to 1532 written from a Lutheran perspective, was written originally in German and published in Wittemberg in 1532. It was translated into Latin by Hermannn Bonnus and this was first published in Halle in 1537. Johann Carion (1499-1537/8) was born in Bietigheim in Germany as Johannes Negelin, he enrolled at the University of Tubingen in 1514 and later also studied medicine. At Tubingen he met Philip Melanchton who became a life-long friend and who later enlarged and revised Carion's Chronica (Chronicon Carionis1558-1566). In 1519 he went to the court of the Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg where he worked as court mathematician and astrologer. Later he was in contact with Luther and Georg Sabinus. He published a few scientific and astrological works but the Chronica made him famous being the first German history. In it he followed the doctrine of the 4 monarchies then current and derived from Daniel 2 and 7. The work may have indirectly influenced Shakespeare as it was a source for the Chronicles of Holinshed who probably used an English translation by Walter Lynne, "The thre bokes of Cronicles whyche Iohn Carion...gathered wyth great diligence of the beste authours". Il testo vero e proprio degli 8 sermoni è invece nitido su carta pulita, integra e croccante (trascurabili pochi buchetti e gore). .Alc. annot. e sottol. a penna. Impresa ed. al front; al colophon, grande vignetta, motto in ricca cornice. Bei capilettera grandi figurati. EZIO di Amida sul Tigri, 502-575 d. C., 1° medico cristiano, scrisse in greco il "Tetrabiblion", di cui qui abbiamo la prima metà; ognuno degli 8 sermoni è a sé stante. Testo di enorme importanza, novità su veleni, oftalmologia, cosmesi, ginecol., reumi,; minerali, fitologia (i "semplici"), le prime spezie orientali (canfora ecc.). Ognuno degli 8 sermoni (salvo il 1°) è preceduto da un ampio indice alfabetico. Libro non adatto a collezionisti/investitori, ma prezioso per lo studio della storia della medicina e della natura. Tres rare edition, apparemment non repertoriee, des sermons du patriarche de Jerusalem et dominicain francais Pierre de la Palud (1277-1342). Cet ouvrage eut un grand succes au 15e siecle et il en existe un certain nombre d'edition incunables. L'auteur qui etait en charge de l'administration de l'eveche de Nicosie (Chypre), avait notamment plaide la cause des chretiens de Palestine aupres du sultan d'Egypte et, n'ayant rien obtenu, il s'etait declare en faveur d'une nouvelle croisade. Joli bois grave sur le titre et un feuillet illustre a pleine page de 4 charmantes gravures sur bois representant des scenes de piete. 2). Premiere Edition publiee en France, de cet ouvrage theologique sur la Passion du Christ, compose par le theologien hollandais Antoine Broickwy de Koninckstein (1470-1541). First edition in Italian and first edition in a modern language, folio, 242 leaves, large woodcut device on colophon and on verso of final leaf; woodcut arms on title-p.; geometrical woodcut diagrams in the margins throughout; a good, complete copy in dirty old vellum, recased in the 19th century, with extensive paper repair to margins of the title-p. and following leaf, also with paper repairs to corners of a number of pages throughout; some leaves washed. The translation and commentary is by Niccolo Tartaglia, one of the most noted mathematicians of the 16th century who here has added his own preface, commentary and eulogy on the utility of mathematics. According to Stillman Drake, Galileo at Work, pp. 2-4, it is probably this translation that was used by Galileo. "Tartaglia's Italian translation of Euclid!the first published translation of the Elements into any living language of Europe!was an event of great importance to the progress of mathematics, and indeed of all applied sciences. For the first time the principal treasury of rigorous mathematical reasoning was open to men who knew neither Greek nor Latin. The implications of that event for the science of mechanics were great because literacy in Europe was very high, especially among engineers and artisans" (Drake & Drabkin, Mechanics in Sixteenth Century Italy, pp. 21-22). L'opera, un poema in esametri diviso in 12 canti (ognuno dedicato a un segno zodiacale), ebbe larga diffusione nei paesi protestanti, mentre in Italia venne posta all'indice nel 1558 a causa delle aspre critiche mosse al clero. Oggetto della poesia sono l'esoterismo, lo studio della pluralita' dei mondi e soprattutto la condanna degli abusi ecclesiastici della curia romana. Frontespizio lievemente brunito. Edition originale. 'Broche', sous papier marbre' d'epoque. Les feuillets sont replies en marge haute droite. La couverture porte egalement une pliure et quelques manques. 'Depuis le XVIeme siecle, il y a avait toujours eu un homme pour chef de la maison d'Autriche, et la succession s'etait transmise de male en male , mais l'Empereur Charles VI n'eut que des filles. Il voulut laisser son heritage a' sa fille ainee, Marie-Therese, et regla sa succession au moyen d'une loi solennelle, appelee Sanction Pragmatique. Cet acte decidait que Marie-Therese succederait a' son pere. Pour etre sur qu'il fut execute, Charles VI le fit reconnaitre d'abord aux membres de sa famille, puis a' ses sujets des differentes provinces. La Pragmatique devint alors la loi fondamentale de succession de la monarchie autrichienne. Elle etablit le droit des femmes a' succeder et rendit le territoire indivisible, aussi longtemps qu'il subsisterait des descendants de Marie-Therese. C'est sur cet acte que repose encore aujourd'hui l'existence de la monarchie autrichienne. A la mort de Charles VI (1740), Marie-Therese fut reconnue heritiere par tous les pays de la monarchie autrichienne. Mais les souverains d'Europe ne se laisserent pas arreter par les traites qu'ils avaient signe' , ce fut une guerre europeenne, chacun travaillant a' demembrer l'Autriche. L'ouvrage evoque une mauvaise interpretation du testament de l'empereur Ferdinand quant a' la succession de la maison d'Autriche.

First Latin edition of this early history of Lübeck which first appeared in German in 1539. It was written by the reformer Hermannus Bonnus (1504-48) who received part of his education at Wittemberg, where he came under the influence of Luther and Melanchthon, and following organisation of the Evangelical Church there he became superintendent in Lübeck from 1530 until his early death. He represented his town in 1535 in the conference of the six free towns of Lübeck, Bremen, Hamburg, Rostock, Stralsund and Lüneberg to agree measures for dealing with Papists, Anabaptists and Sacramentarians. He took a courageous part against the democratic revolution in Lübeck led by Jurgen Wullenweber and in this history he pointed out the dangers of innovating tendencies. This translation is by Justin Gobler of St. Goar (d. 1567), who was councillor to Eric, Duke of Brunswick-Calenberg, and then to his son Eric II. The translation of the history is followed by two funeral orations (pp. 145-191), for Eric the Elder who had died in 1540. The two leaves following title-page restored in blank upper margins. Recueil de 23 lettres, rédigées entre 1537 et 1542 par Mondella et adressées à différents médecins et botanistes, tels que Leonhard Fuchs, Girolamo Fracastoro, Mario Nizolio, Vincenzo Mitelli ; la dernière partie (85 pages) est un commentaire sur la pharmacopée de Antonio Musa Brasavola. Luigi Mondella, médecin à Brescia, fut ensuite nommé à la tête du Jardin des Plantes de Padoue. Il fait partie, avec ses confrères Brasavola de Ferrare et Girolamo Fracastoro de Vérone, du mouvement de réforme qui s'éleva en Italie contre l'autorité, jusqu'alors indiscutée, de l'enseignement de Galien. Dans ces lettres, Mondella parle aussi de l'épidémie de typhus qui se déclara en Italie, de l'usage du vin en médecine et des différents simples. Jean de Gaigny, mort en 1549, chancelier de l'Universite et premier aumonier de Francois Ier, eut une part remarquable dans l'essor de la renaissance en France, en retrouvant et publiant d'importants manuscrits anciens. Ses commentaires sur le nouveau Testament "ou le sens litteral est developpe avec beaucoup de justesse" (Feller) sont un de ses principaux titres de gloire. Z. über schweren Holzdeckeln, Rücken über 5 erhabenen Bünden, Vorder- und Hinterdeckel mit Blindprägung, mit 2 intakten Metallschliessen (restauriert, Buchblock neu geheftet und aufgebunden, Vorsätze und Spiegel erneuert, ebenfalls neu sind die beiden Lederbänder der Schliessen). Erstausgabe der ersten vollständigen Ausgabe der lateinischen Zürcher Bibel, Exemplar aus der Bibliothek Ulrich Zwinglis (1528-1571), gleichnamiger Sohn des Zürcher Reformators, der seit 1549 das einflussreiche Amt als Leutpriester am Grossmünster bekleidete. Diese herausragende, von Froschauer sorgfältig in einer schönen Antiqua gedruckten Bibel ist Frucht der zeitraubenden Übersetzung aus den Ursprachen durch Zwinglis Freund und streitbarsten Mitkämpfer für die Reformation, Leo Jud (1482-1542). "Ein wissenschaftliches Juwel im Kranze der Froschauerbibeln bildet die im Februar 1543 publizierte Folioausgabe der lateinischen Bibelübersetzung Leod Juds . Was irgend in langjähriger Arbeit an Vorbereitungen dazu geleistet werden konnte, was sich an sorgfältigen Ausgaben des hebräischen Alten Testamentes auftreiben liess, was an Mitteln der Textvergleichung und Schriftauslegung, an gesicherten alten Lesarten für Feststellung des Grundtextes und seines Sinnes beizubringen war, was die alten Übersetzer und Kirchenschriftsteller als Hilfe an die Hand gaben, alles ward so gewissenhaft als möglich gesichtet und in nicht minder treuem Bemühen übersetzt" (Johann Conrad Gasser). Der von der Zürcher Bevölkerung als 'Meister Leu' bewunderte Übersetzer war am 19. Juni 1542 gestorben, so dass die Biblia sacrosancta schliesslich, mit Conrad Pellikan als Herausgeber und einer Einleitung Heinrich Bullingers, als Gemeinschaftswerk erschien. Von Theodor Bibliander stammen die Übersetzungen der Teile XLI-XLCVIII des Buches von Ezekiel, sowie der Bücher Daniel und Job, der Psalmen CIII-CL, Ecclesiastes (Prediger), und des Hohelieds Solomos. Petrus Cholinus verantwortete die lateinische Fassung der Apokryphen. Das Neue Testament betreute Rudolf Gwalther nach Erasmus' Version. Von Gwalther findet sich am Schluss auch eine Elegie einer Argumentation über das Alte und Neue Testament. Die Bibel erschien nebst dem vorliegenden majestätischen Folio-Format bereits ein Jahr später auch im Quartformat und 1559 schliesslich noch in der wohlfeilen Oktavausgabe. Der Pariser Verleger Robert Estienne (Stephanus) verlegte diese Zürcher Übersetzung, allerdings ohne Quellenangabe, erstmals 1545 zusammen mit Annotationen des Hebraisten François Vatable (1485-1547), notabene ohne dessen Wissen. Die solcherart als 'Bible de Vatable' bekannt gewordene Bibeledition erschien in revidierter Form erneut 1557 (Pagnini/Vatable und Beza) und 1584 (vgl. dazu: A. p. Hubbard, The Bible of Vatable, in: Journal of Biblical Literature, LXVI (1947), 197ff.). Christoph Froschauers gleichnamiger Neffe und Nachfolger griff 1564 schliesslich dann selbst auf Robert Estiennes Genfer Bibeledition von 1557 zurück. Bestimmt mit Einverständnis oder im Auftrag der Zürcher Reformatoren liess der Druckerverleger Christoph Froschauer ein Exemplar dieser herausragenden Zürcher Bibel als Geschenk an Martin Luther in Wittenberg übermitteln. In seinem bösen 'Dankesschreiben' vom 31. August 1543 wendet sich dieser brüskiert und vehement gegen "die falschen, verführerischen Züricher Prediger", mit denen er nichts zu haben wolle, denn "sie werde dasselbe göttliche Strafgericht wie Zwingli treffen" (WA Briefe, Nr. 3908). Der Kodex wird geschmückt durch verschieden grosse, biblische Szenen darstellende, Holzschnitt-Initialen, die Leemann-van-Elck der Werkstatt von Niklaus Manuel Deutsch zuschreibt. Die drei in zwei Varianten vorliegenden Druckermarken Froschauers, des eigentlichen Begründers des Zürcher Buchwesens, stammen von Hans Baldung Grien. Fulvio's account of Rome, the classical antiquities, the private collections and the buildings as they survived at the beginning of the 1500s, is of the greatest historical significance. Fulvio's observations are recorded by a humanist's critical eye. The descriptions of private collections in Rome include the antiquities collection of Angelo Colocci and the numismatic collection of Cardinal Andrea Della Valle. The work has also been cited as the first true antiquarian topography of Rome. "Fulvius published the work under the guidance and instigation of Raphael, who had been charged by Pope Leo X to undertake a pictorial reconstruction of Ancient Roma. Fulvio was a friend of Raphael, Blondus and Laetus." (Kissner Catalogue 153). Andrea Fulvio (1470 - 1527), a Renaissance humanist, poet and antiquarian of Rome, advised Raphael in the reconstructions of ancient Rome and as possible settings for his frescoes. Fulvio was Raphael's cicerone as they explored the ruins of Rome, Fulvio showing Raphael what was essential to be drawn and ex-temporising on them (cf: Bette Talvacchia, in Marcia B. Hall, ed. The Cambridge Companion to Raphael (Cambridge University Press) 2005:184). Very fine copy. PROVENANCE: Marchese Giuseppe Arconati Visconti (1797-1883) with his crowned oval stamp at foot of title-page. Visconti was the owner of the famed Lombardian villa Castelazzo, designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Ruggeri and possessing the largest and most elaborate landscape gardens in Lombardy. Primera edición del primer libro de caza en español. El papel, los grandes márgenes, la belleza de los grabados y adornos así como los excelentes tipos góticos empleados hacen de esta obra un libro delicioso. La obra de Pedro Núñez de Avendaño es la primera impresa en nuestro país de una serie de libros de caza que iba a continuar veinte años después con el Libro de Cetreria de Zúñiga y Sotomayor y cuarenta años después por el Libro de Montería de Alfonso XI, editado en Sevilla en 1582. Pero la obra de Nuñez de Avendaño presenta enormes diferencias con las obras de cetrería del siglo XVI. No es propiamente un tratado de caza, sino un ensayo de jurisprudencia sobre el modo de cazar, es decir, sobre los deberes morales del cazador y una exposición de casos y controversias que pueden ocurrir y se precise resolver, teniendo en cuenta el derecho civil y canónico de la época. “Libro tan curioso como raro” (Catalina) Procedencia: 1. Il s'agit de : "De Justo", "De Virtute", "Demodocus vel de Consultando", "Sisyphus vel de deliberando", "Eryxias vel de Divitiis", "Definitiones" (ce dernier a ete attrubue a Speusippe, philosophe d'Athenes, neveu et disciple de Platon, a qui il succeda dans la chaire de l'Academie). Le traducteur est le grammairien et humaniste italien Sebastiano Corrado (mort en 1556), successivement professeur a Venise, Reggio et Bologne. Il fonda a Reggio l'Academie des Belles-Letres "Degli Accessi". Bon exemplaire en cartonage ancien. Old ownership inscriptions to the foot of the general title, letters numbered in the margin in an old hand, handwritten subject index compiled on the largely blank pages at the end of the text. Old plain calf, with some wear to spine but still sturdy. Floral end-papers and armorial bookplate !Comes de Solms!. Paulus Manutius, the son of Aldus, established a reputation for himself as a Ciceronian scholar and after he took over the press at the end of the 1530s Cicero dominated the list of Aldine publications. There were a number of editions of the Epistolae Familiares, but as Renouard mentions, they are found less frequently than those written to Atticus. Renouard presumed that this was beacuse they were read and reread as models of Ciceronian style. This edition has a revised text and an additional leaf of scholia discussing earlier editions. Loys Vasse, qui fut le condisciple de Vesale a Paris. C'est la premiere de ce format et elle est augmentee d'une table de matieres. La contribution a l'histoire de l'anatomie de Loys Vasse ainsi que ses rapports avec Vesale ont ete etudies par Crummers & Sanders et par H. Cushing. Par ailleurs Bayon a montre l'interet de cet ouvrage concernant l'histoire de la decouverte de la Circulation du Sang et les valves des veines. Son etude a ete reprise par le Dr. Weil dans son catalogue 30 dans ces termes: "Besides the Vesalius interest (of this work), I wish to point out the interesting passage of the Blood... coming very near to Harvey's discovery. Dr. Bayon, in his excellent papers on Harvey discusses Vasse as precursor." Et le Dr. Weil ajoute que ce livre constitue un lien entre Vesale et Harvey, dont Loys Vasse avait pressenti la grande decouverte. Mouillures generales, mais papier solide. Our copy includes the rare 4-leaf "Ad Lectorem," a list of the astronomical parameters culled from various authorities. Eighteenth-century tree calf, rebacked with the original elaborate gilt spine laid down; covers and spine lightly worn, lower margin of title strengthened and a few leaves soiled. First edition of this outstanding astronomical treatise containing a discussion of the earth's revolution on its axis -- no doubt an allusion to Copernicus, and a remarkably early one, since his great work was printed the same year (1543). It is therefore interesting to note that the main part of this work was in fact completed October 21, 1535 at Messina (f. 103). However, the preface, a dedicatory letter to Cardinal Bembo, is dated February 5, 1540, the "Ad Lectorem" (lacking in most copies) is dated December 5, 1542, and the publishing date is 1543.#11;This work is also valuable for its connection with early Americana; several references are made to the discovery of America and the voyages of Columbus and Vespucci.#11;Maurolico (1494-1575) is described by Sarton as one of the most remarkable men of the Renaissance. He made major contributions to the fields of astronomy, mathematics, optics, music, and geodesy (see Arnaldo Masotti, DSB, IX, pp. 190-94).

Seconde édition parisienne, après celle de Gaultherot, publiée, comme le dit Fuchs dans sa très virulente préface, pour faire pièce aux traductions allemandes subreptices du plagiaire strasbourgeois Gauthier Riffius. Elle ne figure pas au catalogue Opale Plus de la BNF. L'auteur Leonhard Fuchs (1501-1566), fut un des médecins les plus célèbres de son temps et un des fondateurs de la botanique moderne. On lui doit en particulier la description de la digitale pourprée. Provenances : André Delpech, juriste à Sarlat (ex libris manuscrit du XVIème ou du XVIIème siècle sur la page de titre) ; Docteur P. A. Créhange, auteur d'une remarquable bibliographie sur " les livres anciens de médecine et de pharmacie ", parue en 1984.

Reddish stains to back board, contemp. inscript. at title-page, light marginal dampstains to last 3 signatures, small piece of lower clasp broken away. A very good copy, in a handsome contemporary binding. Armorial bookplate of Baron Radcliffe. . ! Early Basel edition, originally published at Strasbourg in 1527/28. One of the first Protestant biblical concordances, the Pandectae is organized by topic (De Deo, De Christo, De Peccato, De Spe, etc.) and concludes with biographical entries on biblical persons and wars. Before Otto Brunfels (c.1488-1534) rescued botany from the confines of medieval scholasticism, he in fact spent about twelve years in a Carthusian monastery in Strasbourg until he, aided by Ulrich von Hutten and the printer Johann Schott, fled both the monastery and Catholicism. He quickly became a Protestant preacher, but his Protestantism, affected by the mysticism of Bodenstein von Karlstadt, was too unlike that of the other reformers in Strasbourg and merely embroiled Brunfels in controversy. He was then, perhaps in consequence of his religious frustrations, drawn to the botanical work that has made him famous. Nevertheless, his theological efforts were of great importance, and the vitriolic nature of his correspondence with Erasmus is legendary. In addition to publishing this work, he wrote both several widely read volumes on the lives of men and women in the Bible and numerous theological tracts. Cf. Bietenholz I.206-7. VD16 ZV-2572. The book's seventeen chapters cover topics such as: "De Populo Romano," "De Interrege & Interregno" and "De Senatoribus." The title-page notes that the material was compiled from "various authors" but names only Prevotius (active 1543-1579), Protestant professor at the University of Lausanne.The Writers to the Signet were those authorised to supervise the use of "the Signet," originally the private seal of the early Scottish Kings. The Society is particularly noted for its Edinburgh library, containing about 65,000 books, almost half of a legal nature. They sold about 25,000 books at auction in 1978. In very good condition. The binding also very good, with only minor damage to the corners. Neo-Latin work on the political structure of the Roman republic.

Rare edition of the 3rd century historian's account the chaotic period immediately following Marcus Aurelius' death through the brief reign of Gordianus III. The scholarly printer of Basle, Henricus Petrus, had first printed Herodian's text in 1535, with the Latin translation by Poliziano; but here, clearly with an eye on the student market, the text is set in parallel columns: Greek on the left, with the Latin "trot" on the right. The only copy we have located is at Cambridge University (cf. Adams), but neither the British Library nor any American institution appears to have one
