Primera edición ilustrada del famoso tratado de botánica y medicina de Dioscorides editado por Ioanne Ruellio. La segunda parte del libro, con portada independiente, es la primera edición de los comentarios de Lonitzer a los textos de Dioscórides. Muchos de los más de 550 grabados proceden de la edición de Egenolff del Kreuterbuch de Rösslin; otros son copia de la primera edición de De historia stirpium de Fuchs. Todos los grabados están finamente coloreados en la época. Buen ejemplar en general aunque ligeramente amarronado como es habitual, ligeros puntos de óxido. First illustrated edition with all the woodcuts colored by a contemporary hand. Part two is the first edition of Lonitzer's scholia to Dioscorides. This work employs Ruelle's Latin Translation, first published in Paris in 1516, and taken from the Aldine greek edition of 1499. Added is the commentary of Ryff. Many of the woodcuts in this work were first used in Egenolff's editions of Rösslin' "Kreuterbuch". These woodcuts include about 200 copied from the publisher Isingrin's first Fuch's edition of "De historia stirpium". Fuchs criticized this use in various publications. Egenolff had also used pirated woodcuts of Weiditz's (Brunfels cuts published by Schott) in his edition of Rösslin but they were later confiscated by Schott.

Magnífica encuadernación francesa del siglo diecinueve en marroquén azul, planos ricamente decorados con multitud de hilos, ruedas y bellas grecas doradas, lomera cuajada de dorados, doble hilo dorado en los cantos, contracantos con hilos y ruedas doradas, de excelente ejecución, firmada por Emile Rousselle. Primera edición del primer libro de caza en español. El papel, los grandes márgenes, la belleza de los grabados y adornos así como los excelentes tipos góticos empleados hacen de esta obra un libro delicioso. La obra de Pedro Núñez de Avendaño es la primera impresa en nuestro país de una serie de libros de caza que iba a continuar veinte años después con el Libro de Cetreria de Zúñiga y Sotomayor y cuarenta años después por el Libro de Montería de Alfonso XI, editado en Sevilla en 1582. Pero la obra de Nuñez de Avendaño presenta enormes diferencias con las obras de cetrería del siglo XVI. No es propiamente un tratado de caza, sino un ensayo de jurisprudencia sobre el modo de cazar, es decir, sobre los deberes morales del cazador y una exposición de casos y controversias que pueden ocurrir y se precise resolver, teniendo en cuenta el derecho civil y canónico de la época. Important and scarce astronomy text dealing with the second book of Pliny's Natural History. "Before receiving the doctorate in medicine Milich had published a commentary on the second book of Pliny's Natural History. He finished its composition in 1534 while professor of mathematics at Wittenberg and it was printed at Hagenau in August, 1535, then again at Schwäbisch Hall in 1538 and at Frankfurt in 1543. If we believe Mylius, this work, although bearing Milich's name, was to a large extent written by Melanchthon. It utilized the erudite Commentary on Pliny's second book which Jacob Ziegler had published in 1531. The author regards the second book of Pliny's Natural History as an admirable brief compendium, comprising the elements of astronomy and meteorology, to prepare students for more advanced studies in physics and astronomy." (Thorndike, V, pp. 387-8). Thorndike, who describes this work at some lenght, also notes its possible influence on Newton and Tycho Brahe. In his commentary Milich regards comets as fumes or earthly exhalations in the upper air, although he does note that many men argue that they have a double motion like stars. He also expands on various other astronomical subjects touched upon by Pliny. The text is illustrated with woodcuts depicting various astronomical phenomena. Bound it its original, beautifully preserved, blindstamped pigskin binding (dated 1544) with the fine portrait rolls signed "AF" which Haebler in describing it suggests no less then three possibilities: one of two Leipzig master binders, Adndreas Ficker and Andreas Franke; or the Wittenberg binder Andreas Franckow (the one Haebler thinks most likely) 210, [6] leaves (without last blank). 21Woodcuts and diagrams (some full-page) of astronomical subjects. Venetijs Alouisium de Tortis 1543 - Due opere legate in 8° (cm 10,4 x 15), legatura piena pergamena coeva con titolo calligrafato al dorso, pp (48), 551, per la prima opera; (12), 115 per la seconda; due bei frontespizi silografici architettonici che incorniciano i titoli, dati tipografici dello stampatore al colophon per entrambe le opere; esemplare in buone condizioni, primo front. presenta tre minuscoli tarletti nel margine esterno, senza perdita di testo, rade annotazioni coeve, rade macchiette a poche cc, forellino di tarlo alle pp 107-115 della seconda opera, nel margine interno senza perdita di testo. Esemplare che unisce due opere nelle rare edizioni del Torti del filosofo e umanista Valla (1407-1457), anticonformista, accusato di eresia per le sue opere, A. dagli innumerevoli nemici; la prima opera, criticata e coperta di invettive dai contemporanei, tra cui il Bracciolini, fu considerata all'epoca della divulgazione (l'A. vi lavorò dal 1435 al 1444) una provocazione, che pone lo studio del latino su basi scientifiche, secondo i modelli di Cicerone e Quintiliano, per attuare l'eleganza stilistica dello scrivere latino, dettando le norme per l'uso moderno e mostrando disdegno sia per il latino medievale che per il latino degli umanisti suoi contemporanei. La seconda opera è confutazione degli errori di Antonius Raudensis, frate minorita e umanista, professore di eloquenza a Milano, partecipò al Concilio di Basilea. Tre esemplari censiti in Edit 16 per la prima opera, sei per la seconda. Non in Adams.

Mit Froschauers Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf beiden Titelblättern und grossen, neunzeiligen Holzschnitt-Initialen im Text (Alphabet mit Darstellungen aus der biblischen Geschichte). [18], 387, 1 leeres Bl.; 98 Bl.; 114, [19] Bl. (ohne das letzte leere). Schweinsleder d. Z. über schweren Holzdeckeln, Rücken über 5 erhabenen Bünden, Vorder- und Hinterdeckel mit Blindprägung, mit 2 intakten Metallschliessen (restauriert, Buchblock neu geheftet und aufgebunden, Vorsätze und Spiegel erneuert, ebenfalls neu sind die beiden Lederbänder der Schliessen). Exemplar aus dem Besitz Ulrich Zwinglis (1528-1571), gleichnamiger Sohn des Zürcher Reformators, der seit 1549 das einflussreiche Amt als Leutpriester am Grossmünster bekleidete. Die erste vollständige Ausgabe der lateinischen Zürcher Bibel in Erstausgabe. Diese herausragende, von Christoph Froschauer sorgfältig in einer schönen Antiqua gedruckten Bibel ist Frucht der zeitraubenden Übersetzung aus den Ursprachen durch Zwinglis Freund und streitbarsten Mitkämpfer für die Reformation, Leo Jud (1482-1542). "Ein wissenschaftliches Juwel im Kranze der Froschauerbibeln bildet die im Februar 1543 publizierte Folioausgabe der lateinischen Bibelübersetzung Leod Juds ... Was irgend in langjähriger Arbeit an Vorbereitungen dazu geleistet werden konnte, was sich an sorgfältigen Ausgaben des hebräischen Alten Testamentes auftreiben liess, was an Mitteln der Textvergleichung und Schriftauslegung, an gesicherten alten Lesarten für Feststellung des Grundtextes und seines Sinnes beizubringen war, was die alten Übersetzer und Kirchenschriftsteller als Hilfe an die Hand gaben, alles ward so gewissenhaft als möglich gesichtet und in nicht minder treuem Bemühen übersetzt" (Johann Conrad Gasser). Der von der Zürcher Bevölkerung als 'Meister Leu' bewunderte Übersetzer war am 19. Juni 1542 gestorben, so dass die Biblia sacrosancta schliesslich, mit Conrad Pellikan als Herausgeber und einer Einleitung Heinrich Bullingers, als Gemeinschaftswerk erschien. Von Theodor Bibliander stammen die Übersetzungen der Teile XLI-XLCVIII des Buches von Ezekiel, sowie der Bücher Daniel und Job, der Psalmen CIII-CL, Ecclesiastes (Prediger), und des Hohelieds Solomos. Petrus Cholinus verantwortete die lateinische Fassung der Apokryphen. Das Neue Testament betreute Rudolf Gwalther nach Erasmus' Version. Von Gwalther findet sich am Schluss auch eine Elegie einer Argumentation über das Alte und Neue Testament. Die Bibel erschien nebst dem vorliegenden majestätischen Folio-Format bereits ein Jahr später auch im Quartformat und 1559 schliesslich noch in der wohlfeilen Oktavausgabe. Der Pariser Verleger Robert Estienne (Stephanus) verlegte diese Zürcher Übersetzung, allerdings ohne Quellenangabe, erstmals 1545 zusammen mit Annotationen des Hebraisten François Vatable (1485-1547), notabene ohne dessen Wissen. Die solcherart als 'Bible de Vatable' bekannt gewordene Bibeledition erschien in revidierter Form erneut 1557 (Pagnini/Vatable und Beza) und 1584 (vgl. dazu: A. p. Hubbard, The Bible of Vatable, in: Journal of Biblical Literature, LXVI (1947), 197ff.). Christoph Froschauers gleichnamiger Neffe und Nachfolger griff 1564 schliesslich dann selbst auf Robert Estiennes Genfer Bibeledition von 1557 zurück. Bestimmt mit Einverständnis oder im Auftrag der Zürcher Reformatoren liess der Druckerverleger Christoph Froschauer ein Exemplar dieser herausragenden Zürcher Bibel als Geschenk an Martin Luther in Wittenberg übermitteln. In seinem bösen 'Dankesschreiben' vom 31. August 1543 wendet sich dieser brüskiert und vehement gegen "die falschen, verführerischen Züricher Prediger", mit denen er nichts zu haben wolle, denn "sie werde dasselbe göttliche Strafgericht wie Zwingli treffen" (WA Briefe, Nr. 3908). Der Kodex wird geschmückt durch verschieden grosse, biblische Szenen darstellende, Holzschnitt-Initialen, die Leemann-van-Elck der Werkstatt von Niklaus Manuel Deutsch zuschreibt (siehe Abb. in: Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1938, S. 154-155). Die drei in zwei Varianten vorliegenden Druckermarken Froschauers, des eigentlichen Begründers des Zürcher Buchwesens, stammen von Hans Baldung Grien. Es existieren auch Exemplare mit einem vom Zürcher Wappen geschmückten Haupttitel. - Das Titelblatt etwas braunfleckig, im Unterrand angefranst (fachgerecht restauriert), gelegentlich im Kopfsteg mit schwachem Wasserrand. Hs. Besitzeinträge auf Titel "Sum Huldriychi Zwinglij Tigurini 1553" und darunter: "Sum Huldriychi Stolbij. 1585". C. Gasser) was begun by Zwingli's friend and closest combatant Leo Jud in 1526. As he died on 19 June 1542 the Bible had to be completed as a collaborative work. Editor was Conrad Pellikan, the preface was written by Heinrich Bullinger, and furher collaborators were Theodor Bibliander, who translated Ezekiel, XLI-XLVIII; Daniel, Job; Ps. CIII-CL, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon; while Petrus Cholinus translated the Apocrypha, the New Testament was prepared after Erasmus' celebrated Latin version by Rudolf Gwalther of whom an elegy on the argumentation on the Old and New Testament is printed at the end of the book. In addition to this splendid folio format the Zurich Bible was printed in quarto one year later and finally in 1559 also in the inexpensive octavo format. Because of all translations made from the Hebrew into Latin, the Zurich version was considered the best for its correct Latinity, the Paris publisher Robert Estienne (Stephanus) published Leo Jud's translation with the annotations of François Vatable (1485-1547). a theologian learned in Hebrew and Greek who however did not know anything of the project. This version became soon known as "Bible de Vatable" and was reissued again in 1557 and 1584. "Estienne, to protect himself from the criticisms of the Sorbonne, used the name of Vatable, widely known for his immense erudition, to sponsor the entire bible". - Title with some brown stians, lower margin frayed (restaured), upper margins here and there with light narrow waterstain. - Contemporary pigskin over heavy wooden boards, back on five raised bands (newly stitched and recased, fly-leaves and pastedowns new). A fine copy of important provenance.

Lione, Henri Estienne, 1543-'46Due tomi in 24° (cm 8 x 12); primo tomo: cartonatura , cc (184), titolo in latino ed in ebraico, segnatura in latino ed in ebraico, testo, note e colophon in ebraico; al frontespizio, impresa dello Stephanus: uomo indica olivo frondoso con innesti, motto su cartiglio: "Noli altum sapere"; secondo tomo: legatura piena pergamena coeva, cc (125), (1) bianca: manca forse il frontespizio e una bianca finale. Esemplari in buone condizioni, bruniture: il primo tomo è quasi completamente intonso, incredibilmente preservato, quasi tutti i fogli chiusi dai due lati. Il secondo, invece, fittamente, nitidamente postillato nella prima parte in caratteri ebraici e in caratteri latini, ma non in lingua latina. I due volumi forse sono entrambi relativi al Libro dei Re, secondo nota trovata in esemplari censiti in CCFr (To. 2, Reges (1-2), esemplare della Bibliothèque Municipale di Rouen); fanno parte della seconda edizione in tredici volumi, posseduti in numero variabile dalle varie biblioteche consultate, dello stampatore umanista Estienne, del Vecchio testamento in ebraico, nello specifico "Hamisha humse torah", "Quinque libri legis", con il commento di David Kimhi, (anche Kimchi or Qimchi) (1160-1235). Noto pure con l'acronimo ebreo di RaDak, lo studioso nacque a Narbona in Provenza e fu rabbino, esegeta biblico, filosofo, grammatico. Assai stimato per i commenti ai Profeti, la sua opera verte in modo specifico sul linguaggio, la vocalizzazione, la tradizione rabbinica della lettura, grammatica e significato letterale dei vocaboli. Grammatico di fama, si dedicò anche alla filosofia e alla scienza. L'edizione è a cura di François Vatable, "hebraicarum literarum regio professore". Due esemplari censiti in SBN. Venetijs, Alouisium de Tortis, 1543Due opere legate in 8° (cm 10,4 x 15), legatura piena pergamena coeva con titolo calligrafato al dorso, pp (48), 551, per la prima opera; (12), 115 per la seconda; due bei frontespizi silografici architettonici che incorniciano i titoli, dati tipografici dello stampatore al colophon per entrambe le opere; esemplare in buone condizioni, primo front. presenta tre minuscoli tarletti nel margine esterno, senza perdita di testo, rade annotazioni coeve, rade macchiette a poche cc, forellino di tarlo alle pp 107-115 della seconda opera, nel margine interno senza perdita di testo. Esemplare che unisce due opere nelle rare edizioni del Torti del filosofo e umanista Valla (1407-1457), anticonformista, accusato di eresia per le sue opere, A. dagli innumerevoli nemici; la prima opera, criticata e coperta di invettive dai contemporanei, tra cui il Bracciolini, fu considerata all'epoca della divulgazione (l'A. vi lavorò dal 1435 al 1444) una provocazione, che pone lo studio del latino su basi scientifiche, secondo i modelli di Cicerone e Quintiliano, per attuare l'eleganza stilistica dello scrivere latino, dettando le norme per l'uso moderno e mostrando disdegno sia per il latino medievale che per il latino degli umanisti suoi contemporanei. La seconda opera è confutazione degli errori di Antonius Raudensis, frate minorita e umanista, professore di eloquenza a Milano, partecipò al Concilio di Basilea. Tre esemplari censiti in Edit 16 per la prima opera, sei per la seconda. Non in Adams.

Portadacon grabado en madera a gran tamaño representando el escudo de Iñigo de Mendoza, timbrado por la corona ducal, entre dos columnas con guirnaldas colgantes; fol. xxxix con escudo del autor grabado al verso a media plana; bellas letras capitulares historiadas. Magnífica encuadernación francesa del siglo diecinueve en marroquén azul, planos ricamente decorados con multitud de hilos, ruedas y bellas grecas doradas, lomera cuajada de dorados, doble hilo dorado en los cantos, contracantos con hilos y ruedas doradas, de excelente ejecución, firmada por Emile Rousselle. Primera edición del primer libro de caza en español. El papel, los grandes márgenes, la belleza de los grabados y adornos así como los excelentes tipos góticos empleados hacen de esta obra un libro delicioso. La obra de Pedro Núñez de Avendaño es la primera impresa en nuestro país de una serie de libros de caza que iba a continuar veinte años después con el Libro de Cetreria de Zúñiga y Sotomayor y cuarenta años después por el Libro de Montería de Alfonso XI, editado en Sevilla en 1582. Pero la obra de Nuñez de Avendaño presenta enormes diferencias con las obras de cetrería del siglo XVI. No es propiamente un tratado de caza, sino un ensayo de jurisprudencia sobre el modo de cazar, es decir, sobre los deberes morales del cazador y una exposición de casos y controversias que pueden ocurrir y se precise resolver, teniendo en cuenta el derecho civil y canónico de la época. The misattribution on the spine and ms. t.p. report this as a Lyonese ediion by De Tournes of 1544 but no such book exists. Our attribution is based on the number of pages and this copy can only belong to one the 1571 Paris editions. There are two differing imprints with the same title and pagination, but as we lack the t.p., we cannot tell which this is. ÒAlthough numerous imitations of Ariosto appeared in France, this is the only complete French translation printed during the sixteenth century. The French text is sometimes attributed to Jean Des Gouttes, whose name heads the dedication to cardinal Hippolyte dÕEste, but Des Gouttes states specifically that the translation was made not by him but at his request. All edges red. Bookplate of Henry Babbington Smith to FEP. Early ink inscription to title, some staining and soiling to text, occasional ink annotation. Some pencilled collation notes to added blank leaves at end. Slight chipping to margins of signature A, with single wormhole to leaves A-A4, clipping a single greek letter from the title of the first work, otherwise not affecting text. Theocritus, Ancient Greek bucolic poet from Sicily, fl.3rd Century BC. Three editions of Theocritus' Idylls appeared between 1539-43, two published in Venice by Farrea (1543) and Zanetti (1539), another in Paris by Wechel. The two Venetian editions are both edited by Alban Thorer, with his 3pp preface, and appear to be identical but for their imprints, both reprints of the much-prized 1516 Kallierges edition, depicting two examples of concrete poetry, to verso of f.76 and recto of f.78, printed within woodcut borders to resemble and axe and a pair of wings. Both Farrea and Zanetti were among Venetian printers who used the striking device of a crowned salamander, suggestive of some alliance, and only adding to the bibliographical mystery. Both were also responsible for the publication of a Scholia, entirely in Greek, also reprinted from Kallierges, although whether this was integral to the work or a separate item remains in debate amongst bibliographers (Adams makes no mention of the Scholia at all, conversely EDIT-16 considers the Scholia integral, whilst several records on COPAC are for the text or scholia individually). The formation of this copy, with the text of Ferrea and the Scholia of the Zanetti, suggests that the two works were published separately, and because of the identical nature of the text, scholars' cared little for the bibliographical niceties. Added is the commentary of Ryff. Many of the woodcuts in this work were first used in Egenolff's editions of Rösslin' "Kreuterbuch". These woodcuts include about 200 copied from the publisher Isingrin's first Fuch's edition of "De historia stirpium". Fuchs criticized this use in various publications. Egenolff had also used pirated woodcuts of Weiditz's (Brunfels cuts published by Schott) in his edition of Rösslin but they were later confiscated by Schott.

Primera edición del primer libro de caza en español. El papel, los grandes márgenes, la belleza de los grabados y adornos así como los excelentes tipos góticos empleados hacen de esta obra un libro delicioso. La obra de Pedro Núñez de Avendaño es la primera impresa en nuestro país de una serie de libros de caza que iba a continuar veinte años después con el Libro de Cetreria de Zúñiga y Sotomayor y cuarenta años después por el Libro de Montería de Alfonso XI, editado en Sevilla en 1582. Pero la obra de Nuñez de Avendaño presenta enormes diferencias con las obras de cetrería del siglo XVI. No es propiamente un tratado de caza, sino un ensayo de jurisprudencia sobre el modo de cazar, es decir, sobre los deberes morales del cazador y una exposición de casos y controversias que pueden ocurrir y se precise resolver, teniendo en cuenta el derecho civil y canónico de la época. Dieses sehr seltene kleine Buch ist hauptsächlich ein Nachdruck von Peter Apians 1529 in Ingolstadt erschienener "Cosmographiae introductio" (siehe dazu Röttel, Apian, p.156 f), besonders was die Beschreibungen der vier Kontinente, einschließlich jener von Amerika, betrifft (Blatt 28v-29v: "Americae descriptio"). Der Text enthält aber auch die Beschreibung eines von Dryander hergestellten Globus mit einer Armillarsphäre, wovon aber offensichtlich keine Exemplare bekannt sind (siehe Blatt 3v: "Terrestri nostro Globo explicando, recipiendum putamus ..."; Blatt 29v: "Noveris, & hoc Instrumentum Globum Cosmographicum, ea arte excudendum, & in usum studiosorum producendum, me curasse, et ex uno atque eodem Instrumento, ram rerum coelestium, quam terrestrium, hoc est, tam Astronomica quam Cosmographica, commode addisci queant ... Adiectis itaque quae Astronomicis adesse, additamenta solent globis, videlicet Quarta altitudinis, Rota horaria, circulo positionis, Angulo Sphaerico &c. Ad hos et illos usus instructum habes globum, haec ne ignares, volui"). In L. Bagrow, A. Ortelii Catalogus Cartographorum, p. 36 ist der folgende Hinweis aus K. Gesners "Pandectarum libri", Zürich 1548, zu finden: "Jo. Schonerii, Dryandri & Gemmae Frisii Globi impressi sunt". Johannes Eichmann/Dryander (Wetter 1500 - Marburg 1560), Professor der Mathematik und Medizin an der Universtät Marburg. "Dryanders Hauptinteresse galt in den ersten Jahren seiner Marburger Tätigkeit der Anatomie. Er hielt vier Lehrsektionen ab, die zu den frühesten in Deutschland gehören ... In seiner astronomischen Tätigkeit trat Dryander als Verfasser mehrere viel benutzter und oft zitierter Lehrschriften hervor" (Neue deutsche Biographie, IV, 1959, p.143).

Ausgabe der Übersetzung von Sebastian Münster (1489-1552). - Elijah Levita (1469 in Ipsheim oder Neustadt an der Aisch - 1549 in Venedig) war ein jüdischer Dichter, Humanist und Philologe. Er ist auch bekannt unter den Namen Elija Bachur Levita, Elias Levita, Elija ben Asher ha Levi oder Elia Levi Ben Ascher Aschkenasi = Elia, Sohn des Ascher, genannt der Deutsche. Schon früh beschäftigte er sich mit der hebräischen Grammatik. Später zog er nach Venedig, und im Jahre 1504 wurde er in Padua Hebräischlehrer für jüdische Kinder. Als Schriftsteller verfasste er auch Ritterdichtungen, welche zumindest teilweise als Parodien angelegt waren. Außerdem trat er als Übersetzer von Psalmen hervor. 1509 reiste er nach Rom und unterrichtete Aegidius de Viterbo, Kardinal und Ordensgeneral des Augustinerordens, in Hebräisch. Während dreizehn Jahren blieb er dort und veröffentlichte u.a. das Sefer ha-Bachur, das zunächst 1518 in Rom und 1542 in Isny gedruckt wurde. 1527 kehrte er nach Venedig zurück und wurde Korrektor in der berühmten Offizin Daniel Bombergs. 1540 bis 1542 lebte Levita in der freien Reichsstadt Isny im Allgäu. Dort unterrichtete er den Reformator und Hebraisten Paul Fagius in Hebräisch und veröffentlichte mit diesem einige Werke. Elija Levita starb im Alter von 80 Jahren am 28. Januar 1549 in Venedig. [Zurich: Christoph Froschauer(?)], 1543. 143 x 92 mm. (5 5/8 x 3 5/8"). From the Macclesfield collection (though without the characteristic blindstamped seal on the first leaf). A few leaves with very brief early marginal annotations and manicules, these partly trimmed. STC 17793. This is a very rare copy of the first appearance in English of an exposition of the views of Philip Melanchthon regarding the Eucharist, which Melanchthon argues should be offered to worshippers in the form of both bread and wine. He also denies in this work that the Mass itself constitutes a sacrament, argues that bishops have no greater authority than ordinary priests, and discusses other controversial issues. After Luther, the greatest figure of the Reformation was the person who was born with the German name Philip Schwartzerd (i.e., black earth) but who chose to be called by the Greek equivalent, Melanchthon. Professor of Greek at the University of Wittenburg, where Luther also taught, Melanchthon (1497-1560) was one of Luther's earliest and most staunch supporters. His mastery of Greek enabled him to guide Luther in his translation and interpretation of the Gospels as well as in the formulation of Lutheran theological doctrine. Melanchthon's Augsburg Confession was a statement of 17 Lutheran tenets readied for the conference of Augsburg, a meeting held with the vain hope of solving differences between Protestant and Catholic. After Luther's death in 1547, Melanchthon tried to lead the movement toward reconciliation with the papacy, but the more adamant wing of the Reformation prevailed. OCLC seems to locate just four copies of this first printing (and one copy of an edition issued by Richard Jugge in 1548). Retrospective limp vellum by Bernard Middleton.

Bei dieser zürcherischen Bibel, die im Februar 1543 erschien, handelt es sich um den Erstdruck der von Leo Jud unter Mitwirkung von Theodor Bibliander (Zwinglis Nachfolger auf dem theologischen Lehrstuhl) und Peter Cholinus (Kolin) aus dem Grundtext der Ursprachen nach vieljährigen Studien und Vorarbeiten ganz neu ausgearbeiteten Uebertragung in die lateinische Sprache. Kurz darauf und im folgenden Jahre erschienen davon auch eine Quart- und eine Grossoktavausgabe. Alle diese Drucke sind in der Offizin Froschauer sorgfältig und sauber in Antiqua und Kursiv ausgeführt worden. Der Band umfasst drei Teile, nämlich das Alte Testament, die kirchlichen oder apokryphen Bücher und das Neue Testament. Am Schluss ist eine von Antistes Rudolf Gwalther verfasste Elegie einer Argumentation über beide Testamente beigedruckt. Dem Text gehen folgende Einleitungen voraus: eine Lobrede auf die Heilige Schrift, ein Vorwort für den Leser über die grundsätzliche Absicht dieses Werkes, eine Darlegung Huldreich Bullingers über alle Bücher der Heiligen Schrift und deren Vorzüglichkeit, und ein Aufriss des Zweckes der Heiligen Schrift. Am Ende steht ein Schriftenverzeichnis über beide Testamente. Die Apokryphen sind durch ein Vorwort von Peter Cholinus eingeleitet. Der Text wird in Marginalien reichlich erläutert. Auf dem ersten Titelblatt prangt das zürcherische Hoheitszeichen im Kranze der Ämterwappen, wohl nach der Zeichnung Hans Aspers, und die beiden andern Titel erhielten den Schmuck einer der stilvollen Büchermarken Froschauers aus der Werkstatt Hans Baldung Griens (vgl. Heitz, Büchermarken 6). Unter den aus verschiedenen Alphabeten verwendeten Bildinitialen stechen besonders die grossformatigen mit den biblischen Darstellungen von Niklaus Manuel hervor. Sonst fehlt jede Bebilderung. Die lateinische Bibelausgabe genoß sowohl in protestantischen wie in katholischen Gelehrtenkreisen hohes Ansehen; sie galt als die eigentliche Zürcher Bibel. Vatable übersetzte sie ins Französische und liess sie schon 1545 in Paris drucken, und der berühmte Bossuet benützte sie für seine Studien". (Bibelsammlung im Großmünster zu Zürich, 12). ?Im Zusammenhang mit ihrer Herausgabe ereignete sich für Froschauer und die Zürcher Theologen schmerzliche Enttäuschung. In der Hoffnung, Luther sich und den Zürchern günstig zu stimmen, sandte der Druckherr ihm aus seinem Bücherladen in Frankfurt als Geschenk das eben erschienene Bibelwerk. Diese Gunstbezeugung fand aber nicht den erwünschten Beifall" (Van Elck, Offizin Froschauer, 95). Luther, der nach dem Marburger Religionsgespräch (1529) mit Zwingli auch auf Einigungsversuche Bullingers 1538 nicht eingegangen war, bedankt sich in einem Brief an Froschauer vom 31.8.1543 für die Bibel und erkennt die Arbeitsleistung an. In der ihm eigenen Diktion weist er das Geschenk jedoch barsch zurück, weil er mit den Zürcher Reformatoren nichts zu tun haben will: ?Ich hab die bibel, so ir habt mir durch unser buchfürer zugeschickt und geschenkt, und ewer halben wyß ichs üch guten danck. Aber weyl es ein arbeit ist ewer prediger ? mit welchen ich, noch die kirchen gottes, keyne gmeinschaft haben kann ? ist mirs leid, daß sy so fast sollend umbsonst arbeyten und doch darzu verloren syn. Sy seind genügsam vermanet, daß sy söltend von irem irthumb abstehen, und die armen leute nit so jämerlich mit sich zur hellen füren. Aber da hilft keyn vermanung, müssend sy faren lassen. Darumb dürfet ir mir nicht mer schicken oder schenken, was sy machen oder arbeiten. This is the first extensive study of Strasbourg's diverse religious nonconformists beyond 1543, and the first to explore their continuities and discontinuities over two generations. Based on vast archival records in Strasbourg and secondary sources, it moves beyond the political and theological emphases of earlier works to include social history, portraits of village life, and the second generation to 1570. Derksen finds that second generation nonconformists were substantially different from the first. Their social profile changed; from an urban mix of leaders, intellectuals and artisans, they became largely rural folk composed of lower class artisans. Further, in outlook their view narrowed from "radicals" who sought to change church and society at its root to dissenters concerned mainly to survive. At the same time there were continuities. When the revolts of the 1525 Peasants' War were crushed, dissident ideals found new expression in spiritualist, sectarian, and apocalyptic streams. In these streams, into the 1560s and beyond, nonconformists continued their call for social and economic justice and meaningful participation in religion. The book will be of interest to historians of the Early Modern period, the Reformation`s radicals, popular religion, sixteenth-century society and Strasbourg, and to those interested in the free church tradition. Elegante corsivo, grande marca tipografica al frontis cui segue la dedica del Gussano a Pietro Aretino datata 10 settembre 1543. Salvo l' antica traduzione della Batracomiomachia del Summaripa, Verona 1470, è questo il più antico volgarizzamento che si conosca. Prima edizione della prima traduzione italiana in versi sciolti di una qualsiasi parte dei due poemi omerici. Manca ad ADAMS, CHOIX, BRUNET e a molta bibliografia consultata. Il CENSUS, ICCU EDIT 16, registra solo otto copie nelle biblioteche italiane. Vedi le ampie note in ARGELATI e PAITONI. HOFFMAN, GRAESSE e FEDERICI la citano con data errata (1543 e 1554) ma la considerano il: "Primo saggio di versione italiana dell' iliade". Nella dedica a Pietro Aretino il Gussano attesta: " Il principe di tutti i poeti, Homero per opera di greco è omai divenuto italiano". Poi ancora dichiara di avere già pronti gli altri 23 libri per le stampe. Mai però furono pubblicati. Al verso bianco del frontis antico ex libris manoscritto: " Giovanni de Brignoli"; probabilmente un dotto gesuita nato a Genova nel 1721, vedi DE BACKER-SOMMERVOGEL II p. 165. Un unico insignificante forellino di tarlo restaurato all' estremo margine bianco del volume, per il resto esemplare molto bello e fresco. Some nice woodcut initials. 151, (17) pp. Revised completed edition after the original Paris edition by Vascosan of 1541 of this famous work on the Athenean constitution, which reflects the interests of the academic world of Paris at the time and which was to be the last expression of Postel's youthful Hellenism. Until then Postel (1510-1581)had published three works on linguistics - a work which describes the alphabeths and grammars of twelve languages, mostly of the Near East, for which Postel has been hailed as the father of comparative philology and one on the Jewish origins of language and civilisation - and geography - a handbook for pilgrims to the Holy Land. His services as an orientalist and philologist to learning and the French crown were soon rewarded. After a diplomatic journey to Greece and Constantinople he was appointed to the lectureship in the Collège de France and from 1538 until 1542 he lectured for the king on mathematics and philology. He did so well that he became friends with great scholars as Guillaume Budé and others and with the Chancellor Guillaume Poyet, through whom he received important favours, also from the king himself. The present work was dedicated by Postel to this Chancellor Poyet. When Poyet was disgraced in 1542, however, Postel made a brave effort to intercede with the king, the only result being his own dismissal.The title is followed by the dedication on p. 3-8 and the preface on p. 9-14; at the end there is an index on 7 unnumbered leaves, a blank page and the colophon (verso blank). Good copy with four original fly-leaves at the front and eight at the end. Dated ownership's entry in red ink on the title-page: 'Ex dono Hieronymi Hyrusii me tenet Martinus Brem. 1560' (I am from the library of Martinus Brem; given to him by Hieronymus Hyrusius); also one on the front cover and the first fly-leaf: 'Pierre Gauthier, Dec. 1877'. - (some occasional soiling; a few contemporary annotations in the text). Die dritte und letzte von Luthers sogenannten 'Judenschriften'. Im Gegensatz zu den beiden vorausgegangenen Pamphleten weist diese Antwort auf Gerüchte, wonach die Eislebener Juden sich in beleidigender Weise über die Christen geäussert hätten, nur wenige heftige und agressive Aussprüche gegen die Juden auf. In seiner ursprünglich 'Ueber die Gottheit Christi aufgrund der letzten Worte Davids' betitelten Schrift der 'Letzten Worten Davids' sieht Martin Luther den Beweis für den Unglauben der Juden und darin wiederum findet er die Begründung für die vermeintliche Unversöhnbarkeit der Christen mit den Juden. Kaspar Schwenckfeld attackierte dann in der Folge den grossen Reformator wegen seiner antisemitischen Schrift. Die eindrucksvolle Titelbordüre wurde vermutlich von Cranach d. Ä. selbst entworfen, stammt aber sicher aus dessen Werkstatt (Koepplin/Falk Nr. 263 und Abb. 215) - Titel etwas unfrisch, durchgehend geringfügig gebräunt. Fokke, incl. frontispiece. 320 pp. First edition of a very rare popular book by Nicolaas Hoefnagel, the author of a number of picaresque novels in the style of Nicolaas Heinsius. The book is nicely illustrated with engraved plates by Simon Fokke, born in 1712 as the son of a physician and playwright of some fame. After a short career in the theatre Simon Fokke choose a graphic profession and became a pupil of J.C. Philips for seven years. As book illustrator he was much praised for always working after his own designs in his own style, which for some time dominated Dutch book illustration. But his too free imagination caused his downfall, and in about 1770 Jacob Buys and Reinier Vinkeles took over as the most popular Dutch book illustrators. The second Cologne edition of two of the most important sixteenth-century textbooks on the art of letter writing - by Macropedius and Hegendorf -, which were often published together. Both textbooks were bestsellers and were published ca. 30, resp. 50 times. The first edition of Macropedius's textbook was published in Antwerp in 1543 under the title Epistolica ., the first Cologne edition in 1568.Georgius Macropedius (Joris van Lancvelt; 1487-1558) devoted a lifetime of hard work to teaching in the Schools of the Brethren of the Common life. By 1510 he had begun teaching at Bois-le-Duc and his Asotus, the first of the Latin School plays for which he is best known today, was composed there. Mascropedius was ordained priest and went on to teach at Liege (ca. 1525-29) and Utrecht (ca. 1529-1556). In addition to the twelve plays, Macropedius published Latin School songs and textbooks of grammar, dialectic, and prosody (two of which are included in this edition).Macropedius's Epistolica, or Methodus de conscribendis epistolis is devoted to the students of the Utrecht Latin School (pp. (2)r-v) divided in two parts, the first treating invention (pp. 1-56), the second disposition and elocution (pp. 57-80). Hegendorf (ca. 1500-1540) studied with Petrus Mosellanus and was a friend of Melanchton. He was professor of Greek in Posen and Frankfurt an der Oder. The first edition of his work on letter writing appeared in Hagenau in 1526. Hegendorf's Methodus is as original as one can expect a rhetoric textbook to be, but it also draws fully upon Erasmus's work. Hegendorf composes some model letters and selects the rest from classical authors. Under each question, he provides brief explanations.Both treatises, often published as tandem, were among the leading textbooks of letter writing in English schools, as well as in schools on the continent. Roman and Italic letter, a little Greek, titles slightly dusty and age yellowed, fine large historiated woodcut initials, numerous geometrical diagrams in text, some with printed florets. Later inoffensive paper restoration to upper margin and outer corner of C2-4 of vol. II, marginal faint spotting on second t-p, armorial bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield on front pastedown, small armorial blindstamp at head of first t-p and following leaf. A very good, clean copy in C17th citron morocco, covers gilt double ruled, spine gilt in six compartments, edges tooled gilt, page edges sprinkled red. First edition of Archimedes' two great books on hydrostatics, on which all subsequent study of the subject was founded. It was edited by Federico Commandino, and here bound with one of Commandino's very few original scientific works, an elaborated system of theorems and proofs to determine the center of gravity of solid bodies of all shapes and sizes. Archimedes' work is in the first critical printed translation, based on the Latin translation of Moerbeke, the first book only had been published by Tartaglia in an uncritical Latin edition of 1543. The opening letter addressed to Cardinal Ranuccio Farnese mentions that no Greek manuscript of this work had ever come to light. In fact the Greek codex of Archimedes' 'Floating Bodies' was only discovered in 1906. Commandino extensively commented on and corrected the Latin text. "In particular the proof of proposition 2 in book II was incomplete, and Commandino filled it out. One step required knowing the location of the center of gravity of any segment of a parabolic conoid. No ancient treatment of such a problem was then known, and Commandino's was the first modern attempt to fill the existing gap" (DBS III p. 364). Federico Commandino (1509-1575), from a noble family of Urbino, educated in Latin and Greek, studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Padua but he took his medical degree from the University of Ferrara. Gaining renown from his true vocation of editing, translating, and commenting on the classics of ancient Greek mathematics, he was designated private tutor and medical adviser of the Duke of Urbino and also taught mathematics to Guido Ubaldo da Monte and later his son. Commandino's editions and translations became the basis for almost all subsequent versions of the Greek mathematicians of antiquity and considerably advanced this aspect of Renaissance thought. Sein "Panarium" (der "Brotkasten" oder die "Medizinbüchse") ist das ausführlichste Werk seiner Zeit gegen Häretiker (vor allem gegen Origenes und die Arianer), es werden darin aber auch die Philosophenschulen und die jüdischen Sekten angegriffen. "Überaus stoffreiche [.] 'Ketzerbestreitung'" (LThK III, 730). Die Herausgabe besorgte der Arzt und Philologe Janus Cornarius (eigtl. Johannes Hagenbut) aus Zwickau, der lange Zeit in Basel weilte und vor allem durch seine Hippokrates-Ausgaben bekannt wurde. - Am ersten Widmungsblatt gest. Exlibris des Servitenordens (wohl der Klosterbibliothek in der Wiener Rossau); am Titel alte hs. Bibliothekssignatur. Am vorderen Innendeckel die spätere hs. First bilingual edition with the first Latin translation of the famous anthology, compiled from the writings of Greek poets, philosophers, and orators by the Macedonian scholar Joannes Stobaeus (5th cent. A.D.), and intended in the first instance for the instruction of his son Septimius. It deals with a variety of topics, from metaphysics to household economy, and it is concerned chiefly with ethical questions. The illustrative extracts, which Stobaeus probably owed in large measure to earlier collectors, are arranged under thematic headings. Photius, Patriarch of Constantinople and the best of Byzantine scholars (9th cent.), commends the work for its usefulness to writers and speakers. The special value of the work for us lies in the large number of quotations from many earlier authors whose writings are otherwise lost, or which often throw light upon difficulties in the regular manuscript tradition. As the first Greek edition, Venice 1536, proved to be extremely faulty, Gesner re-edited the Greek text from several manuscripts and added the first Latin translation together with some other works (a.o. an elegy ascribed to Solon and translated by Ph. First edition in Italian and first edition in a modern language, folio, 242 leaves, large woodcut device on colophon and on verso of final leaf; woodcut arms on title-p.; geometrical woodcut diagrams in the margins throughout; a good, complete copy in dirty old vellum, recased in the 19th century, with extensive paper repair to margins of the title-p. and following leaf, also with paper repairs to corners of a number of pages throughout; some leaves washed. The translation and commentary is by Niccolo Tartaglia, one of the most noted mathematicians of the 16th century who here has added his own preface, commentary and eulogy on the utility of mathematics. According to Stillman Drake, Galileo at Work, pp. 2-4, it is probably this translation that was used by Galileo. "Tartaglia's Italian translation of Euclid�the first published translation of the Elements into any living language of Europe�was an event of great importance to the progress of mathematics, and indeed of all applied sciences. For the first time the principal treasury of rigorous mathematical reasoning was open to men who knew neither Greek nor Latin. Strasbourg: Knobloch, 1543. Scarce first edition of the first edition of Vitruvius published in Germany, illustrated with reduced copies of the woodcuts found in the 1521 Como edition; also containing an edition of Frontinus on aqueducts, the most important ancient treatise on the subject, as well as the second edition (first c. 1500) of an important text by Nicolaus of Cusa containing the first experiment in plant physiology. The first edition of Vitruvius published outside Italy, Ryff!s redaction (which preceded his German translation of the work by five years) is his first piece of scholarship in the field of architecture. Walther Hermann Ryff!s reputation was cemented by his Vitruvian editions: he !skillfully won himself a readership scarcely familiar even with such terms as !architect! and !architecture!! (Kruft p. 71). Ryff (Rivius, d. 1548) was a humanist-trained doctor and mathematician from Nuremberg, who !had an extensive knowledge of published Renaissance writings on architectural theory. (A year before his translation of Vitruvius he published a substantial volume of texts and commentaries on the subject, in German, from mainly Italian sources)! (ibid p. 470). There are two known states (or issues) of this edition; that offered here contains a preface by Messerschmidt, as opposed to the author.Following the text of Vitruvius are Frontinus!s important work on the aqueducts of Rome, and the treatise on !Static Experiments! by Nicolaus de Cusa. !In this he records the famous experiment, antedating Hales 200 years, of weighing earth and seeds, then the resulting plants, their ashes, and the earth in which they had grown! (Osler 7465), and establishing that plants absorb something of weight from the air. This is considered the first experiment in plant physiology in modern times, and incidentally, the first formal proof that air has weight (see H. Viets, !De staticis experimentis of Nicolaus Cusanus,! in Annals of Medical History (1922), pp. 115-35 and R. Benedict, !The first experiment in plant physiology,! in Science (1939), pp. 411-12). Withal, a fresh, unwashed copy, with good strikes of the woodcuts.

The Greek text was first printed by Aldus Manutius in 1502, and it is very surprising that it was another 40 year before the text appeared in a language which made it accessible to most scholars, although separate editions of the Antigone and Electra had been published in translation. (16), 512, (16) pp. Rare first edition of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates of Cos (460-370 BC), the father of Medicine, edited and translated into Latin by the famous first Leyden professor of medicine Johannes Heurnius (1543-1601). The aphorisms of Hippocrates are the earliest collection of the kind. It is a series of observations from which the patient's affliction could be deduced and treatment prescribed. Their broad application made them exceptionally valuable to medical practitioners of the time. Included are notable and often invoked phrases as: 'Life is short, [the] art long' and 'The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself, but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate'.The translater and editor Joannes Heurnius (Jan van Heurne) had studied at the Hieronymus School in his native town, under a.o. Georgius Macropedius. Afterwards he continued his studies in Louvain (with Gemma Frisius), Paris, where he developed an interest in surgery and finally Padua, the cradle of European medical education, in 1567. In Padua Heurnius became acquainted with the teaching of medical students at the bedside; this innovation had been introduced by Battista da Monte some decades before. He graduated in Padua in 1571 and became immediately court physician of Francois Perrenot, the nephew of Count Granvelle. He held this position until 1573, when he returned to his native town, where he practiced until 1581, when he was appointed professor of medicine at the Leiden University. He was also the physician of William the Silent and Prince Maurits. He introduced for the first time bedside teaching for medical students in Northern Europe. The 'Series lectionum' of the Laiden University annouce lectures of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates in 1599.Apparently the translation by Heurnius was very successful. Re-editions appeared in 1607 (in Leiden and Antwerp), 1609, 1611 - both by the Officina Plantiniana at Leiden -, a 'second edition' was published in 1623 by J. le Maire at Leiden; further editions: 1615 (Lyon, Widow of Ant. de Harsy) and 1690 in Jena. First section, 15 leaves, including title and many of the index leaves, is very worn with damage along edges and gutter, some with crude "repairs" to margins; lower edge of title page torn away, just under the imprint & date. Main text, a-2B8, generally in VG condition but with isolated issues, such as patches or repairs, early notations, edge chipping, and small tears. Leaf c6 has gutter tear with loss. In all, about 40 leaves have condition issues worth noting, and most others have faint staining along fore-edge.
