Joh. Petreius Nuremberg 1541 Modern black morocco in antique style with morocco trimmed slipcase. Folio . Second (1st: 1534), enlarged and corrected edition of this important instrument book by Petrus Apianus (1495-1552) who "... was a pioneer in astronomical and geographical instrumentation, and one of the most successful popularizers of these subjects during the sixteenth century. He studied mathematics and astronomy at Leipzig and Vienna, and quickly established a reputation as an outstanding mathematician" (DSB I, pp. 178- 9). He published a number of important works in his fields of astronomy, geography and mathematics: "Of greater scientific significance, however, is Apian's Instrumentum sinuum sive primi mobilis (1534), where he calculates sines for every minute, with the radius divided decimally. These are the first such tables ever printed" (ibid.). In addition to providing a new preface to the work (dated September 1540) van Ortroy notes numerous other differences. First of all the first edition also included an astronomy work by Gerber that Petreius didn't bother to reprint here. However he notes that Apian has included numerous marginal notes and two new leaves of text as an appendix to the "Quadrans primi mobilis" (leaves [c4]-d1). The work is very rare [88] pp. Large title woodcut, with full-page armoral woodcut on verso, numerous diagrams and a set of tables. Titolo a stampa al dorso. Frontespizio con titolo in rosso e nero e ritratto xilografico dell'autore intento a leggere nel proprio studio entro elegante bordura architettonica in xilografia con putti, tritoni e festoni. Capilettera xilografici ornati su fondo nero, testo su due colonne. Alla c. CCCXL, registro ed explicit ("(Impressi Lugduni: industria & arte probi viri Benedicti Bonnyn, 1541 Die vero quarta Mensis Ianuarij"). Al verso di tale c., impresa editoriale con due leoni rampanti che sorreggono uno scudo con cerchio, croce doppia e le iniziali "IFZ" appeso ad un albero con un giglio giuntino tra le fronde. Alcuni aloni e bruniture di minima entità, restauri al margine interno del frontespizio e all'ultima c. Timbro di collezionista moderno a una delle cc. bianche iniziali (inserite dal legatore novecentesco). Antica nota di possesso cassata al margine inferiore del frontespizio. Alcune sottolineature di mano antica. Nota di possesso all'ultima c. bianca. Bell'esemplare nel complesso. Hansomely rebound in full panel calf, maroon morocco label with gilt lettering and rules between raised bands to spine, Part I: title page dusty and lightly browned, name in top and bottom margins, another below title erased leaving tiny hole, tiny nick to lower edge, in about 50 places there is some highlighting of 2 or 3 lines of text in pale brown pencil or water colour, a couple of small corrections to text, original still legible, a few lines crossed through once but still legible, 6 neat early marginal notes, 1 erased, small ink smudge to 1 page with loss of 2 words, a little light browning to some pages; Part II, 1 small ink stain to text, still legible, 1 underlining, last 4 leaves slightly browned, otherwise clean. Text block tight and firm. A good copy. The first work is an early edition of Quintilian's famous treatise on the art of rhetoric. The second work in the volume was for many years attributed to Quintilian but is now recognised as spurious. Brunet, IV, 1025. Images sent on request.

Head of spine chipped but headband still present; both clasps missing; edges very worn and much exposed to boards; vellum rubbed and stained; small almost oval hole in vellum on upper cover, about 10-15 mm; paper fault foremargin G7 with no loss of text; paper fault M1 with no loss of text; Ss6 to end very slighty wormed with loss of a letter or so; some old and faint dampstaining to front and rear of text; some underlining and marginal notes in Greek and Latin in earlyish hands. An interesting but not very good copy. Compiled from a commonplace book the work, first published in Rome in 1469, contains notes on grammar, geometry, philosophy, history, etc., etc., as well as excerpts from the works of the ancients.

Venedig, Francesco Bindoni & Mapheo Pasini, 1541. - Sehr seltene Ausgabe der "Blümlein" des heiligen Franciscus (1181/1182 -1226), einer erstmals 1476 erschienenen Legendensammlung, die wohl aus dem späten 14. Jahrhundert stammt und eine Übersetzung aus den 'Actus beati Francisci et sociorum eius' in elegantem Toskanisch gibt (aufgeführt von der Accademia della Crusca). Der erste Teil schildert in einfachem, märchenhaftem Erzählton die Vita des Heiligen, die Gründung des Ordens und die Taten der ersten Generation der Franziskanerbrüder. Der zweite Teil berichtet dann von der folgenden Generation in den Marken und enthält einige Hagiographien, wie die der Brüder Bernardo, Leone, Masseo u. a. ? Elle est donnée par l'érudit et médecin suisse Alban Thorer (1489-1550), et publiée pour la première fois à Bâle en 1541; la même année, le libraire Sébastien Gryphe publie cette édition à Lyon. Ce célèbre traité de cuisine n'a été écrit par aucun des trois romains célèbres qui portaient ce nom; Gabriel Peignot a émis l'hypothèse que Coelius pourrait être le nom de l'auteur et Apicius le titre. Quoiqu'il en soit, l'ouvrage rend hommage à la gastronomie romaine et "c'est du livre d'Apicius que sont sortis tous les livres de cuisine que nous connaissons" (Oberlé). Thorer a joint à l'Apicius les traités suivants concernant la cuisine et la santé : De facultatibus alimentorum de Paul d'Egine, le De tuenda valetudine de Platine, mentionnés au titre, et le De condituris variis, extrait de Jean de Damas, qui n'est pas annoncé au titre. Quelques annotations et nombreux mots soulignés à l'encre dans la première partie du volume, ainsi que sur le titre et la première garde ; dos de la reliure habilement restauré. Ex-libris manuscrit sur le titre Carol Schenk, Hamb. 1698, et sur la garde : ex-bibliotheca Weberiana emit, M. Georg Clemens Draudius, 1730; ex-libris Dr. Maurice Villaret.

Titel in Rot und Schwarz innerhalb breiter Holzschnittbordüre von Lukas Cranach mit 10 Szenen. [6], CXXVI Bl. (Pentateuch), CLXIX Bl. (das Buch Josua, der Richter, Ruth, Samuel, Buch der Könige, Chronik, Esra, Nehemiah, und das Buch Esther), 1 leeres Bl., LXXXVIII Bl. (das Buch Job, Psalm und die Sprüche Salomos). Zeitgenössischer Schweinslederband über Holzdeckeln, Rücken über 5 erhabenen Bünden, mit zwei Schliessen und 4 Eckstücken aus Messing. Leipzig, Nikolaus Wolrab, 1541. Blindgeprägter Renaissanceeinband über dem von Lucas Cranach d. J. mit ganzseitigen Holzschnitten ausgestatteten Alten Testament aus Nikolaus Wolrabs Lutherbibel in Erstausgabe, von grosser Seltenheit. Erst nach dem Ableben des Luthergegners Herzog Georg 'der Bärtige' von Sachsen am 17. April 1539 konnte sich das albertinische Sachsen und die Stadt Leipzig unter dem Nachfolger Heinrich (der Fromme) der Reformation zuwenden. Damit erwuchs den Wittenberger Bibeldruckern ernsthafte Konkurrenz in der Nachbarschaft, denn der seit 1535 als (katholischer) Druckerverleger tätige Nikolaus Wolrab erbat und erhielt umgehend von Heinrich ein Privileg für den Druck der Lutherbibel, die auch als seine grösste verlegerische Leistung zu betrachten ist. Vergeblich hatte Martin Luther auf Drängen der Wittenberger Drucker mit einem Protestschreiben an Kurfürst Johann Friedrich von Sachsen (der Grossmütige; reg. 1532-1547) versucht, dem Leipziger Konkurrenten den Bibeldruck zu verbieten. Die grosse Seltenheit dieser Wolrab-Bibel lässt vermuten, dass sie keine grosse Verbreitung fand und wohl ursächlich das Ende der Leipziger Druckerei einläutete. Nach seinem wirtschaftlichen Kollaps 1545 verliess Wolrab Leipzig und ging zuerst nach Frankfurt an der Oder und, nach erneutem Aufenthalt in Leipzig, schliesslich nach Bautzen, wo er ab 1550 die erste Druckerei der Stadt betrieb und zehn Jahre später auch starb. Als Vorlage des Alten Testaments diente Wolrab die "auffs new zugerichtete" Wittenberger Foliobibel von 1540. Um aber die Ausgabe von Hans Lufft zu übertreffen, liess der Leipziger Druckerverleger von Lucas Cranach d. J. (1515-1586) einen neuen Titelholzschnitt sowie einen grossformatigen Zyklus von Illustrationen schneiden, die jedem Kapitel vorangesetzt sind. In der Titelbordüre und der ganzen Druckeinrichtung lehnt sich Wolrabs Luther-Bibel bewusst an die Wittenberger Edition an. Die für die später gedruckten und hier nicht vorhandenen Teile der Vollbibel benutzten Illustrationen (nebst den Cranach'schen Evangelisten- und Apostel-Darstellungen im NT) entnahm der Leipziger Verleger dann der Oktavbibel Luffts von 1535, respektive entlehnte sie einem Evangelienbuch. Die Initialen stammen aus einem grossen Alphabet (ca. 68 x 68 mm) und zeigen figürliche Darstellungen nach Buchstaben des Monogrammisten MS für Hans Luffts Bibeleditionen. Teile von Cranachs Zyklus, der 1543 von Wolrab, aber mit einem nicht von Cranach stammenden Titelholzschnitt, erneut gedruckt wurde, tauchten dann später noch in Nürnberger Bibeldrucken auf (vgl. Die Druckgraphik Lucas Cranachs und seiner Zeit, Kat. Wien 1972, Nr. 24). - Titel hinterlegt, wodurch das herzogliche Wappen auf der Rückseite verdeckt ist, Spuren von Mäusefrass im Aussensteg unten der ersten fünf Blatt, fehlende Stellen in der Titelbordüre alt von Hand in Tusche nachgezogen, etwas gebräunt und stellenweise wasserfleckig, wenige kurze Randeinrisse; ein sehr gutes Exemplar dieser Rarität, von der wir nur sehr wenige Exemplare in öffentlichen Bibliotheken nachweisen können: Parma (in 4 Bände gebunden), BL London, Cambridge, Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart (zweiter Druck) und Wolfenbüttel. Einzelne Teile finden sich in Weimar (wie hier das AT) und in Gotha (Psalmen). Blind-tooled Renaissance binding on the first issue of the Old Testament of the exceedingly rare Leipzig Bible by Nikolaus Wolrab, illustrated by Lucas Cranach the Younger. It was only after the decease of George, Duke of Saxony ('the Beared'), a fervent opponent of Lutheran reform, on 17 April 1539 that Saxony and the city of Leipzig could join the Reformation under his successor Henry IV the Pious. The Leipzig born printer Nikolaus Wolrab who had published many anti Luhteran pamphlets was successful in his request for the privilege to print an edition of Martin Luther's revised Bible of 1540 and became thus a competitor in the profitable market of Bible editions. At the Wittenberg printer's urging Luther wrote a letter to Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony, in which he complains of a 'pirate edition' printed by 'the rascal' Wolrab, and claims, the Leipzig printer is making a profit at the expense of the legitimate printers and of God's Word. However the Elector resisted the request and Wolrab could finish his printing. To surpass the Wittenberg bibles, Wolrab even commissioned Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586) - who was the head of his father's printing shop since the late thirties - to cut eighteen full-page woodcuts for Wolrab's Bible, of which fifteen adorn the Old Testament. The large initials come from an alphabet used previously. Wolrab's bible edition however overstepped himself financially and he went first to Frankfurt an der Oder and, after coming back to Leipzig for a brief period, soon went to Bautzen where he founded the first printing press in that town in 1550 and where he died ten years later. - Slightly browned and stained throughout, few short tears in margins, lower corner of the first five leaves torn off, affecting only the printed marginalia on Aii verso. Title pasted down and therefore concealing duke Henry's coat of arms on verso. The lacking parts of the title border neatly supplied in ink. a few short tears in margins, browned, lower corner of first five leaves of the preface torn off (but not affecting text), light foxing and some waterstaines in places, a very well-preserved copy of this rarity. - Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, back on five raised bands, with two brass clasps. We can trace very few complete copies only of the Wolrab-Cranach-Bible: Parma (bound in 4 vols.), BL London, Cambridge, Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart (second issue of 1542), and Wolfenbüttel. Single parts of this bible are recorded in Weimar (Old Testament) and Gotha (the Psalms only). Provenance: Stephan Contzen with date [1]548 and some marginalia in places, probably by his hand. - Ms. name of Hans Heinrich Koller with date 1650 on first pastedown.

FAGUIS PRESS was the only one in 16th Century Isny (Swabia) and was very active for two years (1541-1542) before moving it to neighboring Constance (1542-1544). Sehr seltene Ausgabe der "Blümlein" des heiligen Franciscus (1181/1182 -1226), einer erstmals 1476 erschienenen Legendensammlung, die wohl aus dem späten 14. Jahrhundert stammt und eine Übersetzung aus den 'Actus beati Francisci et sociorum eius' in elegantem Toskanisch gibt (aufgeführt von der Accademia della Crusca). Der erste Teil schildert in einfachem, märchenhaftem Erzählton die Vita des Heiligen, die Gründung des Ordens und die Taten der ersten Generation der Franziskanerbrüder. Der zweite Teil berichtet dann von der folgenden Generation in den Marken und enthält einige Hagiographien, wie die der Brüder Bernardo, Leone, Masseo u. a. - Titel gebräunt und etwas fleckig, sonst nur wenig fleckig. - ICCU 41979 (nur ein Exemplar in italienischen Bibliotheken). SINGLE LEAF. - BIBLIA ANGLICA. with 62 lines to a full column, printed on both side. With a large, 7 lines, woodcut initial 'D'. London, Edward Whitchurch, May 1541. 35,7 x 26 cm. A leaf from the fifth Great Bible. The printer Edward Whitchurch (d.1561) became an adherent of the Reformed doctrines and in 1537 he associated himself with Richard Grafton to circulate Thomas Matthew's Bible (printed at Antwerp). In 1538 he and Grafton gave financial assistance to M. Coverdale in printing his New Testament at Paris and in 1539 they published the Great Bible in London. (The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church. 2000). Nothing within the Great Bible itself tells of its royal authorization. Official statement of this authorization came only in the second edition of 1540, which was also the first to include the preface and authorization signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), declaring it 'the Byble apoynted to the use of churches.' The large bold format, set in broad double-columns of 62 lines with large capitals and occasional woodcut illustrations, not only reflects the Great Bible's function as a book for public reading, but also expresses the authority that the edition was granted by Henry VIII, Cromwell, and ultimately Cranmer. Although the freedom to read from the English Bible was briefly revoked at the end of King Henry's reign, it was restored under King Edward VI.

L'épître de Jean Canappe à Guillaume Rondelet est datée de 1541. Les deux derniers feuillets contiennent une adresse du ""translateur au lecteur"". Le chirurgien français Jean Canape ou Canappe, traducteur de l'ouvrage, s'installa à Lyon et devint, en 1542, médecin de François Ier. On lui doit des traductions de Guy de Chauliac et de Galien, dont le Livre des simples. Initiales et lettrines ornées ; marque typographique d'Antoine Constantin sur le titre et le dernier feuillet (différentes). Annotations de l'époque à l'encre ; rousseurs prononcées sur les quinze premiers feuillets s'estompant progressivement ; petite déchirure dans la marge intérieure du titre et des gardes. Esemplare genuino, in buone condizioni complessivamente ma con qualche piccolo difetto al frontespizio, una bruciatura al margine di circa 20 carte, che sfiora il testo generalmente e lo danneggia su 2 carte, leggermente rifilato, con qualche carta alla fine leggermente allentata. Legatura piuttosto usurata, fascinosa ma modesta come condizioni.

A reasonable copy of a rare medical book.. 8vo.. Elyot, Sir Thomas (c.1490!1546), humanist and diplomat.#11;OElyot's Castel of Helth completes the trilogy of his major works. It is an attempt to summarize the teachings of the ancient Greek and Roman physicians, especially Galen, so that English men and women may understand and regulate their health accordingly. It popularized the theory of the four humours and complexions, which became a basic part of the intellectual make-up of Renaissance Britain, and suggested medicines and treatments for a variety of ailments. Probably based on Elyot's studies with Linacre, it differed from Linacre's own writings, for Linacre translated the works of Galen from Greek to Latin, hoping to make them accessible to doctors but not wishing to allow ordinary men and women to diagnose their own complaints. Many of the waterways are not configured as we know them from modern maps (i.e. the Dead S ea shows as an elongated lake, etc.). According to Laor's "Maps of the Holy Land" this map was modelled on Vesconte-Sanuto's map of Palestine. This map has no verso text, contrary to earlier editions (first issued in Strassburg in 1522). A few central wormholes have been expertly repaired and are nearly invisible; the image is intact and measures 22x41cm..

Hansomely rebound in full panel calf, maroon morocco label with gilt lettering and rules between raised bands to spine, Part I: title page dusty and lightly browned, name in top and bottom margins, another below title erased leaving tiny hole, tiny nick to lower edge, in about 50 places there is some highlighting of 2 or 3 lines of text in pale brown pencil or water colour, a couple of small corrections to text, original still legible, a few lines crossed through once but still legible, 6 neat early marginal notes, 1 erased, small ink smudge to 1 page with loss of 2 words, a little light browning to some pages; Part II, 1 small ink stain to text, still legible, 1 underlining, last 4 leaves slightly browned, otherwise clean. Text block tight and firm. A good copy. The first work is an early edition of Quintilian's famous treatise on the art of rhetoric. Antiocho Tiberti, italien ne en Romagne au XVe siecle, fit ses etudes a Paris ou il acquit de solides connaissances en mathematiques, medecine et dans les belles lettres. Mais sa vraie passion etait l'etude de la magie naturelle qu'il essaya d'etayer par des raisonnements tires de ses connaissances scientifiques. Il obtint une grande reputation en tant qu'astrologue. Dans son traite sur la chiromancie, il recherche les relations entre cette science divinatoire et l'astrologie. C'est d'ailleurs le premier a avoir attribue des signes du zodiaque aux differentes parties de la paume de la main. Exemplaire de Hyacinthe-Theodore Baron (1707-1787), docteur regent de la Faculte de medecine de Paris, premier medecin aux armees, bibliophile, auteur entre autres d'une notice chronologique des theses de medecine soutenues a Paris entre 1536 et 1752, et d'une liste des gradues de l'universite depuis 1295. Tous les traducteurs sont italiens, et ces traductions etaient considerees comme classiques a cette date. Le second volume contenant l'Odyssee renferme egalement la Batrachomyomachia dans la traduction latine de Aldo Manuce et les Hymnes dans la version de Iodoco Velaraeo. Outre ces oeuvres attribues a Homere, le livre contient la vie d'Homere par Herodote et par Conradum Heresbachium. C'est dans cette edition que liront Du Bellay, Ronsard... les oeuvres d'Homere. §Quintus de Smyrne ou Calaber (du nom de Calabria ou furent decouvert ses manuscrits) est un poete homerique du 2e ou 3e siecle et dont l'oeuvre poursuit la narration de la guerre de Troie, l'action commencant a la fin de l'Iliade. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, rifilata al rame,lievi ossidazioni, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Tommaso Barlacchi, incisore ed editore attivo a Roma tra il 1541 ed il 1550 e, secondo il Bartsch, originario di Salonicco. Nel suo periodo di attivita', relativamente breve, egli commissiono' lavori a Giulio Bonasone, Enea Vico e Nicolas Beatrizet, ovvero i migliori incisori del momento. Engraving, 1541, dated and signed on lower centre plate. From the series "The Grotesque", printed by Tommaso Barlacchi. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, light oxidations, otherwise in good condition. Tommaso Barlacchi, engraver and publisher who worked in Rome between 1541 and 1550, was born, accordin to Bartsch, in Salonicco. Petit in-8 [169 x 100 millimetres] pleine toile bleue a la bradel, piece de titre havane [STROOBANTS], 62 pages et [1] feuillet, marque typographique au titre, repetee au verso du dernier feuillet. Ex-libris a l'encre G. LABICHE sur une garde. TRES BON ETAT. ***___***___*** Small in-8 [169 X 100 millimetres] full blue fabric with the bradel, part of title Havana [STROOBANTS], 62 pages and [1] layer, typographical mark with the title, repeated with the back of the last layer. Ex libris with ink G. LABICHE on a guard. Elegant plate printed by Christian WECHEL who exerted in Paris between 1526 and 1554. The first edition of this small volume appeared in Antwerp in 1536. There is an edition of 1537 with the same address. Humanistic Dutch of great reputation and poet "NUo-Latin" which one rented the elegance and the purity of style, Cornelius CROCUS (Amsterdam, about 1500 - Rome 1550) was the vice-chancellor of the Latin schools of his birthplace. He deployed the greatest zeal to attach his pupils to the catholic religion and to communicate to them his aversion for the new doctrines. It is to this end that it composed a Latin grammar, in order to counter that of "the Melanchthon irreligious person" and that it wrote Latin Conferences to oppose them to those VERY GOOD. Elegante plaquette imprimee par Chretien WECHEL qui exerca a Paris entre 1526 et 1554. La premiere edition de ce petit volume parut a Anvers en 1536. Il y a une edition de 1537 a la meme adresse. Humaniste hollandais de grand renom et poete "Neo-Latin" dont on a loue l'elegance et la purete de style, Cornelius CROCUS (Amsterdam, vers 1500 - Rome 1550) fut le recteur des ecoles latines de sa ville natale. Il deploya le plus grand zele pour attacher ses eleves a la religion catholique et leur communiquer son aversion pour les nouvelles doctrines. C'est dans ce but qu'il composa une grammaire latine, afin de contrer celle de "l'impie Melanchthon" et qu'il ecrivit des Colloques latins pour les opposer a ceux d'Erasme. Michaud avance qu'il composa cette comedie, le Chaste Joseph, afin de contrer les effets que pouvaient produire sur l'esprit de la jeunesse la lecture de l'Eunuque de TERENCE. Adams 2970. Edition Originale tres rare de cet ouvrage sur l'organisation politique de la Grece antique de Guillaume Postel (1510-1581), philosophe, historien et mystique. "Ce livre constitue le premier ouvrage de reflexion de Guillaume Postel qui jusqu'ici avait publie trois ouvrages de 'linguistique' et un ouvrage de geographie. La dedicace a Guillaume Poyet, qui est Chancelier du royaume depuis 1538 lui permet de faire etat de ses relations avec Guillaume Bude et Lazare de Baif, de rappeler les vains efforts du Chancelier en faveur des salaires des professeurs du College des Trois-Langues (a). Ce livre est le seul ou Postel fasse etat de son titre 'd'interprete' en mathematiques et langues etrangeres..." (Cl. Postel). Il fut reimprime a Venise la meme annee et plusieurs fois par la suite. Le texte latin est parseme d'expressions en grec et en hebreu. Annotations manuscrites de l'epoque dans les marges. Traces de mouillures marginales aux premiers cahiers. Elle fut reimprimee en 1532, 1535, 1536, 1537, 1539, et connut encore de nombreuses reeditions plus tardives. Les exemplaires sont devenus rares. On trouve l'edition originale et ses reeditions a la BN de France. La British Library possede quant a elle de nombreuses reeditions. Edition a caracteres Batards. §Pleine Basane fauve XVIIIe. Dos a nerfs orne. Piece de titre en maroquin rouge. Un mors fendus en tete et en queue avec petit manque atteignant cette derniere. Quelques frottements. §Jean Bouchet (1476-vers1550) est un ecrivain et poete francais ne a Poitiers. Ami de Rabelais, de Louis de Ronsard (pere du poete), il fut remarque pour sa precocite et son erudition. En matiere de poesie, il fut le premier a s'astreindre a l'alternance des rimes feminines et masculines. Ses livres, notamment Les annales d'Aquitaine, connurent un vif et durable succes de son temps. Le triomphe de la dame amoureuse est de suivre la difficile voie de l'enseignement de la vertu et de la morale telles qu'elle furent vehiculees et enseignees par l'eglise, et cela tant dans la vie quotidienne (comment bien elever ses enfants, bien manger, tenir sa maison, etre une bonne epouse...) que d'une facon plus generale, en evitant le peche d'orgueil, d'avarice ou de colere. L'ouvrage constitue un temoignage precieux sur la vie quotidienne des couples a la Renaissance et sur la facon de concevoir la sante, la nourriture et la beaute, et ordonne un breviaire du comportement amoureux en accord avec la doctrine de l'eglise. Oecolampade (1482-1531), celebre humaniste protestant ami d'Erasme et de Zwingle, dont la premiere edition avait paru a Bale en 1522. Le second renferme les commentaires sur les epitres de St Paul et sur les petits prophetes (Habacuc, Jonas, Naum, Osee), traduits du grec par Jean Lonicer (1499-1569), humaniste et philologue allemand, ami de Luther, professeur de grec, d'hebreu et de theologie. Cette edition est plus complete que la premiere parue a Bale en 1540. En fin de volume, on trouve le commentaire de Victorinus sur l'Apocalypse. Graesse VII, 128; manque a Adams.

Four large woodcut illustrations, numerous woodcut miniatures and initials, all with early coloring. Printed in red and black, two columns throughout. Full restored contemporary calf binding, lacking clasps but with two metal catches still present. Lacking three leaves (last preliminary, b8, and two final leaves, X7-8), including colophon. All illustrations present except printer's device. Condition good overall, with slight soiling to t.p., light dampstain to top outer corner of about 45 leaves toward beginning, smaller dampstain on lower inner corner of same leaves. Gryphius qui avait deja publie les 4 premieres en 1535 et 1537, les a reimprimees en 1548/49. Cette edition regroupe 3 textes : un lexique des vocables des agronomes, de Giorgio Merula (humaniste, philologue et historien, 1424/1494), un ensemble de gloses de l'humaniste Filippo Beroaldo (1453/1505) sur Columelle, une notice d'Alde Manuce l'Ancien (1449/1515)sur la duree des jours en fonction des saisons.

Paris, Apud Simonem Colinaeum (Simon de Colines), 1541-1542; 2 ouvrages relies en un volume in-4, titre + 3 ff. + 250 ff. + 84 ff., plein veau de l'epoque, dos orne a nerfs entierement refait dans le style de l'epoque, traces de restaurations sur les plats, pages de garde renouvelees, dernier feuillet fortement restaure avec petit manque de texte. Brunet IV, 1025. Renouard, Colines p. 345 & 361. Belle edition du fameux traite de rhetorique de Quintilien, L'institution oratoire, suivies ici des Declamations qui lui ont ete longtemps faussement attribuees. Importantes notes marginales, contemporaines, sur quelques feuillets, agrementees parfois de petits dessins. Jolie impression que l'on doit a Simon de Colines, imprimeur humaniste, a qui l'on doit surtout l'introduction dans l'imprimerie parisienne des principales reformes que les Aldes avaient apportees dans leur art a Venise : l'abandon des caracteres gothiques, l'adoption de formats portatifs, l'impression de livres a bon marche pour les etudiants, l'utilisation d'un caractere italique et la creation d'un beau caractere grec. Sa belle marque d'imprimeur est presente sur les deux pages de titre, presence de lettrines gravees. La premiere page de titre a ete annotee et partiellement graffitee au XVIe siecle. Bon exemplaire malgre les defauts signales et quelques traces d'humidite anciennes. 1541

Premiere traduction en latin donnee par le medecin et erudit italien Giovanni Bernardo Feliciano, de la "Morale a Nicomaque" d'Aristote. Cette traduction est accompagnee des commentaires des philosophes grecs Eustratius de Nicee, Aspasius et Michel d'Ephese, sur le texte d'Aristote. Le texte original grec de ces commentaires avait ete publie par Alde en 1536, mais c'est ici la premiere traduction latine et la premiere fois qu'ils sont joints a une edition de la "Morale a Nicomache". Giovanni Bernardo Feliciano (c. 1490- c. 1552), professeur d'eloquence, erudit et medecin, a donne plusieurs traductions et editions savantes de grands auteurs grecs. Ce beau et rare volume sort de l'imprimerie d'un des membres de la famille des Junte de Florence, fixe a Venise. Des rousseurs, bord du titre consolide par endroits. Absent a la BNF et aux catalogues francais ainsi qu'a la British Library. Un exemplaire a Manchester. Absent a Brunet et a Graesse. Selon Manchester, l'auteur veritable serait celui que l'on nomme le Pseudo Mesue, pour le distinguer de Jean Mesue. Pseudo Mesue serait un medecin arabe du XIIe qui aurait emprunte le nom de l'illustre medecin du IXe par souci de gloire et parce que ses recherches et travaux s'orientaient dans la meme voie, l'utilisation des aliments, c'est ainsi que Pseudo Mesue est aujourd'hui considere comme le pere de la confiserie moderne, car il employait le sucre a des fins therapeutiques en utilisant certaines recettes anciennes, prises notamment chez Jean Mesue et les grands anciens. §Edition a caracteres gothiques imprimee sur deux colonnes. Nombreuses lettrines. Page de titre dans un encadrement (grande frise renaissance avec putti et rinceaux). §Plein Veau d'epoque, le dos a nerfs semble avoir ete restaure au XIXe. Grand fer central renaissance sur les plats avec encadrement a froid et fers dans les angles. Travaux d'insectes restaures sur les plats. Le livre a servi certainement d'ecritoire, un ecriture ancienne s'etant deposee sur les plats en miroir. Legeres restaurations marginales au premier et dernier feuillet. Mouillures claires en debut et fin d'ouvrage sur une vingtaine de feuillets. Un Vol. in Folio de Fo.CCCXXXV. §Abu Zakariya Yahya Ibn Masuyah dit Jean Mesue, medecin chretien ne a Khuz pres de Ninive en 776 et mort a Bagdad en 855 ou il exerca et pratiqua la medecine, et qui fut le medecin personnel du khalife Haroun El Rachid. En dehors du role preeminent qu'il joua dans la medecine arabe, traduisant nombre de textes grecs, son livre des aphorismes (des axiomes medicaux) eut un succes considerable en occident, dont certains ont encore cours aujourd'hui. Il redigea egalement le premier traite de dietetique reposant sur les proprietes des aliments de Gallien, analysant les effets de 140 aliments sur le corps. Par ailleurs la medecine arabe commenca a influencer d'une maniere importante l'Europe au XVe siecle, car les arabes avaient commente et traduit nombre de textes grecs. §Les œuvres de Pseudo Mesue sont commentees par plusieurs medecins europeens : Christofori Georgius, D. First edition of this collection of texts to be edited by Walter Hermann Ryff (d. 1548), the prominent city physician of Nuremberg, surgeon, and author of many medical, anatomical, surgical, pharmacological, culinary, and technological books. This is a very rare book with no copy in OCLC. The first part of this book contains a treatise in two books on various quintessences (leaves 1-56), of which one could transmute one hundred parts of mercury into gold or silver. It is a Lullian version of the De Consideratione Quintae Essentiae by Joannes de Rupescissa (1st ed.: Venice, 1514). Now considered spurious, this treatise had enormous influence on the development of alchemy and is regarded as one of the most authoritative texts on the quinta essentia. !Although Lull himself was opposed to alchemy...his methods had obvious applications in the alchemical field ! and they were so applied in a host of pseudo-Lullian alchemical works, most of them composed more than fifty years after his death. These works explain the traditional (but false) !scientific! view which made him !Lull the Alchemist!.!!D.S.B., VIII, p. 550. The remainder of the book contains Albertus Magnus! De Mineralibus, his principal work on mineralogy, metallurgy, and chemistry; it is one of the best and most comprehensive of the western medieval lapidaries and was written about 1260. !He seems to have experimented with alchemy and is said to have been the first to isolate the element arsenic. He compiled a list of some hundred minerals, giving the properties of each. During his many travels, he made frequent sidetrips to mines and excavations in search of specimens. He was acquainted with fossils, and made accurate observations of !animal impressions! and improved on Avicenna!s account of their formation. Albert suggested the possibility of the transmutation of metals, but he did not feel that alchemists had yet found the method to bring this about.!!D.S.B., I, p. 101. Carattere corsivo. Frontespizio, ripetuto alla carta A1v che separa la tavola dal testo vero e proprio, con la marca del Giolito incisa su legno (Z543), presente, in una variante di dimensioni maggiori, anche al verso dell’ultima carta (Z539). Capilettera silografici animati e ornati nel testo. Legatura ottocentesca in pergamena rigida con titolo manoscritto in inchiostro marrone al dorso. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione, lievi gore alle prime carte, margine superiore sobrio. Ex-libris novecenteschi di Natalio Botana (contropiatto anteriore) e della Biblioteca Senequiana di Antonio Llano Diaz de Quijano di Buenos Aires; un’etichetta con l’antica collocazione al contropiatto anteriore e al recto del foglio di guardia anteriore. Prima edizione giolitina di questo celebre dialogo che riprende quella stampata nello stesso anno dalla tipografia di Aldo Manuzio - che ne aveva pubblicato anche la princeps nel 1528. Il gran numero di edizioni dell’opera del Castiglione ne attesta, specialmente nel Cinquecento, l’immensa popolarità e la vasta diffusione. «Delle 62 edizioni italiane, almeno quarantotto furono stampate a Venezia. Cinque edizioni venivano dalla stamperia degli editori originari, l’officina di Aldo, mentre non meno di sedici, dal 1541 al 1574, venivano dalla stamperia rivale di Giolito, che stampò anche molte edizioni di Petrarca e di Ariosto. Le altre ventisette erano divise tra quattordici editori veneziani - in ordine cronologico, Curtio Torresano, Robani, Tortis, Giglio, Fagiani, Cavalcalovo, Domenico, Comin, Farri, Basa, Mimima, Ugolino e Alberti. Nelle successive edizioni, il libro cambiò gradualmente aspetto. La versione in-folio del 1528, di grande effetto ma difficile da maneggiare, fu sostituita da volumi in ottavo, più piccoli e maneggevoli, o persino minuscoli in dodicesimo come le edizioni Giolito del 1549 e del 1551, veri “tascabili”» (P. Early Venetian edition - the first printed by Giolito - of one of the most important literary works of the Italian high Renaissance. The author, the Italian statesman and writer Balthasar Castiglione, used to live at royal and papal courts. He was a specialist in good manners, courtesy, elegance, and diplomacy. This classical work, characterized by the same elegance in style, is a manual for courtiers, discussing in the form of dialogues staged at the Court of Urbino where Castiglione lived for several years, the virtues of real noblemen and ladies, at the same time showing the court etiquette in all its subtlety. The book was very successful: after the first edition, by Aldus in Venice, 1528, many other editions and translations followed. The present edition is well produced, printed in an elegant italic type. With fine woodcut initials. Editio princeps of the Latin epic poem De Bello Troiano ("On the Trojan War"), the only surviving work of the 12th-century English poet who wrote in Latin, Joseph of Exeter (Josephus Iscanus, fl. 1190). During the Middle Ages, when knowledge of Homeric texts in the original, was lost in Western Europe, such Latin retellings of the events of the Trojan War became immensely important. One of the most popular of these accounts was De Exidio Troiae Historia ("History of the Fall of Troy") by "Dares the Phrygian," which purports to be an eyewitness account of the Trojan War, and which is known to us through a medieval Latin version believed to have been composed in the early sixth century A.D. In the late 12th century the English poet Joseph of Exeter adapted Dares' prose work into Latin hexameters, and it is this version that is printed here for the first time, but erroneously attributed to Dares -- it was not until the Frankfurt edition of 1620 that Joseph's name was correctly attached to the poem. Scholars have suggested that Joseph's version was the principal source (through Boccaccio's Il Filostrato) of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, which in turn inspired Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. Following Joseph's epic is printed the so-called Ilias Latina ("Latin Iliad"), a Latin verse epitome in 1070 hexameters of Homer's Iliad attributed to one "Pindarus Thebanus" in the manuscripts and in early editions (as here); its date is unknown, although internal evidence places it before A.D. 68. The main importance of this Latin Iliad lies in preserving the events of the epic for those ignorant of Greek. The second half of the volume is taken up by twelve Books of Homer's Iliad in the Latin verse translations by the Bavarian humanist Vincentius Opsopoeus (Books I, II, and IX), and Niccolo della Valle (Books III-V, XIII, XVIII, XX, XXII-XXIV). Frontespizio racchiuso entro una cornice silografica decorata da motivi floreali su fondo criblé, ripresa dall’edizione della Vita de S. Catherina da Siena di Raimundus de Vineis, stampata a Siena nel 1524. Alle cc. A1r, A2v e G2r tre grandi capilettera silografici su fondo criblé decorati da personaggi di gusto classico; alla c. A2r una piccola vignetta incisa su legno raffigurante il compianto sul Cristo morto. Legatura in pergamena moderna con titolo in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso al dorso; tracce di coloritura verde sui tagli. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione, alcune lievi fioriture e alcuni aloni alle prime e alle ultime carte; piccoli fori di tarlo restaurati all’ultima carta. Prima rara edizione senese e terza assoluta di questo fortunato testo agiografico – la cui princeps era stata impressa a Firenze da Niccolò Alemanno intorno al 1477-, e che fu redatto dal poeta e priore fiorentino Feo Belcari, noto soprattutto per le sue opere di carattere religioso e per le sue rappresentazioni. Nel secolo XIV il ricco mercante senese, il beato Giovanni Colombini, convertitosi insieme alla moglie dopo la lettura della Vita di Santa Maria Egiziaca scitta da Jacopo da Varazze, aveva fondato una confraternita laica ispirata alla spiritualità di San Girolamo. Nel redigere quest’opera Feo Belcari «mise a profitto un’anomima versione toscana della vita che in latino ne aveva steso nel 1425 Giovanni Tavelli da Tossignano, e con procedimento nuovo in tal genere di letteratura precisò il racconto con nomi, date e notizie che dice desunte “da carte di pubblici notai”. Largamente attinse anche alle lettere del Colombini, delle quali trascrisse e con bell’arte intrecciò ampi frammenti; il che valse, per le immagini e le similitudini spesso formalmente barocche di che il mistico senese aveva fiorito le proprie lettere, a rappresentare il mondo mistico in cui si svolgono i fatti. Ne risultò una vita nella quale il meraviglioso ha naturalmente la sua parte, ma dove traluce pure lo spirito critico dei nuovi tempi» (V. Rossi – A. Balduino, Storia letteraria d’Italia.
