Lyons reprint of the Basel edition edited shortly before by the Winterthur born headmaster of the Basel university, Alban Thorer (or Zum Thor, 1489-1559). It is the earliest or among the earliest cookbooks we know. The editio princeps of the 'apicius culinarius' was printed at Milan by G. Rothomagense in 1490. Complired in fact by several hands it was first printed at Milan by G. Rothomagense in 1490. The editor added here two texts, Platina's 'De tuenda valetudine, natura rerum, et popinae scientia libri decem' and Paulus Aeginetas' 'De facultatibus alimentorum tractatus'. - The four last leaves of the index are missing, some waterstain at the beginning, partly browned and foxed, narrowly cut to upper edges, name on title by an old hand. - Contemporary dark red morocco, gilt double-fillet around sides, spine elaborately gilt. APIANUS, Petrus: GEMMA FRISIUS, Rainer
Cosmographia Petri Apiani. ... Additis eiusdem argumenti libellis ipsius Gemmae Frisij
|
Nuremberg: Joh. Petreius. 1541. Modern black morocco in antique style with morocco trimmed slipcase. Folio . Second (1st: 1534), enlarged and corrected edition of this important instrument book by Petrus Apianus (1495-1552) who "... was a pioneer in astronomical and geographical instrumentation, and one of the most successful popularizers of these subjects during the sixteenth century. He studied mathematics and astronomy at Leipzig and Vienna, and quickly established a reputation as an outstanding mathematician" (DSB I, pp. 178- 9). He published a number of important works in his fields of astronomy, geography and mathematics: "Of greater scientific significance, however, is Apian's Instrumentum sinuum sive primi mobilis (1534), where he calculates sines for every minute, with the radius divided decimally. These are the first such tables ever printed" (ibid.).In addition to providing a new preface to the work (dated September 1540) van Ortroy notes numerous other differences. First of all the first edition also included an astronomy work by Gerber that Petreius didn't bother to reprint here. However he notes that Apian has included numerous marginal notes and two new leaves of text as an appendix to the "Quadrans primi mobilis" (leaves [c4]-d1). The work is very rare [88] pp. Large title woodcut, with full-page armoral woodcut on verso, numerous diagrams and a set of tables. Title printed in red and black. § VD 16, A 3088; IA. 106.434; Adams A-1293; Houzeau-Lancaster, 2399; Zinner 1768; van Ortroy, Apian, 108

Printer's 3 crown device (Z388) on verso of last leaf. Marini (1541-1594), Italian Hebraist born at Brescia. He entered orders and became the canon of S. Salvatore in Brescia. He was a polyglot and was learned in Greek, Arabic, Chaldern, Hebrew, and Russian. He was called to Rome by Gregory XIII and served as his translator as well as working for the Venetian state and others. He worked at extracting from the works of the Rabbis material that would elucidate the Bible. This is his great work and the culmination of his Hebrew studies. It is said that he resisted the bishops who wanted to elect him pope and he retired to his home town and died there. "The attitude of the former [Orthodox Catholics] is well illustrated in the imposing work of the canon Marini, which appeared at Venice in 1593, under the title of NoahÕs Ark: A New Treasury of the Sacred Tongue. The huge folios begin with the declaration that the Hebrew tongue was "divinely inspired at the very beginning of the world," and the doctrine is steadily maintained that this divine inspiration extended not only to the letters but to the punctuation." Eck, Johann
|
Gedruckt z Ingoldstat:: durch Alexander Weissenhorn,, 1541.. Deep walnut full calf old style: Round spine with raised bands, accented with gilt beading, gilt center devices in compartments; red leather spine label; fillets extending onto covers from each band to terminate in trefoils and covers framed in blind double fillets. Some early inner margins reinforced. Stray stains on some pages, beyond "light" on only one. A rather good copy.. 4to (19.5 cm; 7.75"). [96] ff. . Eck (1486-1543) was a forceful and often convincing voice for Catholicism during the first quarter century of the Reformation, and he was, specifically, Luther's "most indefatigable and important opponent" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Here he weighs in on the always hot-button topic of the supposed Jewish practice of ritual murder, also known as the blood accusation or the blood libel. His position here was retrograde, and his powers of rhetoric significantly contributed to ongoing anti-semitism. The text is printed in gothic with side- and shouldernotes, and the title-page has a woodcut of the arms of the Bishop of Trent. => WorldCat locates only three copies in the U.S. and COPAC only three in the U.K.

Schreiber, The Estienne 67 : "This edition appears to have been a favorite with collectors throughout the centuries, and Brunet records several famous copies, including those of de Thou et Heber." _1541. in Folio (31,4x22cm). cccxxxv ff. Un Vol. relié. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Apud Seb. Gryphivm, Lvgvduni (i.e., Lyon, France) 1541 - 314, [14, unnumbered] pp. Index. 17 cm. One of the earliest printed editions of this important collection of recipes from the late Roman Empire, usually thought to have been compiled in the late 4th or early 5th century AD and written in a language that is in many ways closer to Vulgar than to Classical Latin. Bitting notes, "It is not probable that any one of the three Roman epicures who bore the name Apicius was the author of the book. The name was synonymous with gourmandise, and, among the ancients, was given to choice dishes." The text is organized in ten books, arranged in a similar manner to a modern cookbook: Epimeles inscribitur (The Chef), Artoptes (Meats), Cepurica (From the garden), Pandecter (Various dishes), Osprion (Peas, beans, lentils, chickpeas, etc.), Trophetes (Fowl), Polyteles (Fowl), Tetrapus (Quadrupeds), Thalassa (Sea fish), Halieus (Fish). The foods described in Apicius are useful for reconstructing the dietary habits of the ancient world around the Mediterranean basin, although the recipes are clearly geared to the wealthiest classes and include such exotic ingredients as flamingo. [Bitting, p. 11; Cagle 32; Crahan sale 3; Simon 123; Vicaire col. 31]. Front joint starting, evidence of worming to spine, unobtrusive markings of prior ownership but over all a clean, tight copy of this desirable work, VG-VG+ Full period vellum, with gilt-lettered morocco spine label [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HOFSTEDE, P.).
|
M. Schooneveld, 1541, Amst., - 8vo. Wrappers. IV, 56 pp. Sharp satire written anonymously by Petrus Hofstede against the Lutheran minister F.G.C. Rütz, who had given a very critical evaluation of Hofstede's book on church affairs in the Dutch East-Indies. Petrus Hofstede (1716-1803), was an Orangist orthodox minister of the Church at Rotterdam. He also was a passionate book collector, whose library was visited by Björnstähl during his travels in Europe in 1774-1775. The present satire is of interest too with regard to schools and education, because of its school-scenes and discussions of schoolbooks. "Janus Vlegelius" is the Dutch equivalent of "John Hobbledehoy". The professions of sexton and schoolmaster, here ascribed to the reverend Rütz, were usually linked together and both very poorly paid, so of little social consequence. Good copy.- (With ex-libris of D. Wouters). Scheepers II, 1108; cf. Buijnsters, J.J. Björnstähl's bezoek aan Ned. boekverzamelaars, in: Ned. Lit. 18e Eeuw, p. 138, and pp. 146-147. These are the first such tables ever printed" (ibid.). In addition to providing a new preface to the work (dated September 1540) van Ortroy notes numerous other differences. ! Course of the River Mississipi, from the Balise to Fort Chartes; Taken on an Expedition to the Illinois, in the latter end of the Year 1765. By Lieut. Ross . . . 1775
|
Highly detailed map of the Mississippi River, from just north of the confluence of the Ohio River to the Gulf of Mexico. Lieutenant Ross' large scale map of the Mississippi River is of the few large format maps of the Mississippi published during the 18th Century. Ross’ map of the Mississippi was the first official English survey of the Lower Mississippi, and one of the most historically significant American maps, delineating the British gains from France in the French and Indian War and later establishing the future western boundary of the new United States. The map opened the area to settlement from the east and defined the western limits of the American colonies. The map provides a large scale depiction of the river and its topographical features, such as islands in the river, navigational instructions, other rivers and connecting tributaries, boundaries, towns and settlements, forts, local history (including the spot where De Soto discovered the Mississippi in 1541), quarries and potential mining areas, productive land, cane fields, and mountains and other topographical details. A number of Indian Tribes are shown, including the Flathead, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Chackhuma, “Akansas or the Handsome Men,” Wiapes, Corrois, Yazoo, Ofogoulas, Chepoussea, Caskaskias, Colapissas (later known as Huoma), and others. Frederick Webb Hodge (Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico) makes numerous citations to this map. Following the Treaty of Paris, a British expedition was sent to the Illinois territory to demand the surrender of Fort de Chartres, the last outpost under French control in the area. Lieutenant John Ross, surveyor of the 34th Regiment of the British Army, went with this expedition and surveyed the lower part of the River, below Fort Chartes, to the mouth of the Mississippi River. The eastern bank of the river contains more detail than the western side, because the expedition could not enter Spanish territory. Christopher Plantin, 16999, Antwerp, - 8vo. 17th or 18th century calf, triple gilt filets with four cornerpieces on both sides; spine gilt in compartments with red morocco label, lettered in gold. Titles with two variants of the 'Labore et constantia' printer's device of the Plantin office; some woodcut initials. 172, (4), 27(28) pp. Antwerp issue of the original and only edition of the collected works of Lucas Fruterus edited by the famous Leiden humanist Janus Dousa Sr. The edition was printed in the Leiden Office, but a number of copies - also our copy - received a title-page with Plantin's Antwerp address.Lucas Fruytiers was born at Bruges in 1541. He went to Paris to study Law and classical literature and it is said that he was a briljant student. In 1566, however, he suddenly died. Janus Dousa who studied also at the University of Paris in 1564, very likely must have met him there. It is unknown, however, why and how Dousa acquired his papers and why he waited eighteen years before he published his works: there are two privileges, one already given by the Emperor Maximilian II, dated as early as 20 February 1565, and one by the French King, dated 5 August 1582. The Verisimilium libri contain a series of text-critical notes on a large number of Latin authors giving a good insight in the level of philological scholarship at Paris at the time.On p. 135-64 follows a number of Neo-Latin poems by Fruytiers, including poems for Janus Dousa, Georgius Buchanan, Jos. Scaliger, Lambert and Adrian vander Burch and Hadrianus Junius; p. 164-72 contain poems by others, written on the occasion of Fruytiers's death, including poems by Janus Dousa himself and Victor Giselinus, mirroring the life and circumstances of the students from the Low Countries at Paris in the 60s of the 16th century. The book also includes the edition by Lucas Fruytiers of the Syntomata rhetorices sive praecepta artis rhetoricae of Julius Severanus, a Roman poet and rhetorician from the middle of the 5th century AD. The edition is printed with a separate title-page, but it forms in fact one volume with Fruytiers's collected works; both parts were normally sold together. The Syntomata is a treatise on rhetoric and it was dedicated by Fruytiers to Marcus Laurinus, Lord of Watervliet, etc. Although stated on the title-page that this was the first edition of Severianus, there were in fact two preceeding editions: in 1556 by Joannes Operinus at Basel and an edition by Sixtus a Popma published in 1569 with the title De arte dicendi libellus, attributing the treatise erroneously to Aurelius Cornelius Celsus, a Roman author of the 1st century AD: Cologne, Johannes Rotaeus, 1569. Good copy. -(Some waterstaining at places; first title slighly soiled with two portraits scribbled in the lower margin; spine restored; bookplate of the 'Society of writers to Her Majesty's Signet.' pasted on the back of the front cover). Mich. Isingrinium. Basel. 1541 - Small 8vo. [xiv], 192pp. Title [A1], A2-[N8]. Engraved vignette to title, decorative initial letters. Bound in later full polished speckled brown calf with new e/ps. Original pages browned along margins and sl. stained to title and edges of first gathering, but overall clean, readable and sound, final few leaves have been professionally repaired along outer margin, lower portion of title page reinforced. Very rare. Giglio Gregorio Giraldi (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus or Giraldus) (June 14, 1479-February, 1552) was an Italian scholar and poet. He was born at Ferrara, where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. On the completion of his literary course he removed to Naples, where he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Milan in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone. Giraldi was a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His Historia de diis gentium marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by these above treatises De annis et mensibus, and on the Calendarium Romanum et Graecum, he contributed to bring about the reform of the calendar, which was ultimately effected by Pope Gregory XIII. Great Bible) The Byble in Englyshe, That is to Saye, the Content of All the Holye Scripture, Both of the Olde and New Testament Truly Translated After the Veryte of the Hebrue and Greke Textes .1540 Edition
|
Edwarde Whitchurch, London 1541 - Am early example of the Great Bible, this the fifth edition printed in 1541. This copy consists of the Old Testament only. Bound in early 20th century half calf with gilt spine titles. Joints stained and just starting to split a little at the ends. Upper joint quite weak. One inscription and one note tipped in to free front endpaper dated 1911 and 1912. First six leaves (Title page, calendar and prologue) all supplied in old facsimile. Followed by the first original leaf which is the first leaf of Genesis. As well as the missing preliminaries it is also missing the title page to the second parte (the leaf before the first leaf of Joshua) and Folio LX of Machabees. The title page for the fourth parte is supplied in facsimile. (6), 84, 123, 132, 80 leaves. First 38 leaves all with some degree of remargining or restoration sometimes with minor loss of text. Further leaves with corner or marginal restoration include leaf XXIIII of Samuel, XXXIX, LI, LIII-LVI, LXXI of Kynges, CXVI-CXVII and CXXIII of Job, VIII, X, XI, XIII, XIV, XVI, XVIII, XIX, XXI, XXII of Psalms, XXXV-XXXVIII of Ecclesiastes, XLIII-XLIV, XLIX, LVIII, LIX-LXIIII of Esau, LXVIII, LXXIII-LXXX, LXXXIII, LXXXVI-LXXVIII, XC-XCI of Jeremy, XCVIII, CV-CXIII of Ezechiel, CXXXII of Malachy, VIII-XI of Esdrasm XLV of Ecclesiasticus, LVIII of Susanna, LXXIII of Machabees. Many leaves trimmed, usually on the gutter margin. Title page to Thirde part very defective and missing about 1/3 of the page which has been replaced with modern paper. Overall admittedly a somewhat defective and heavily restored copy, but viewed as the Old Testament it is nearly all there. We can send images of this book on request. Due to the weight a postage surcharge may apply. Herbert 61. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MORALIA NICHOMACHIA. Cum Eustraii...Explanationibus. Buper a Ioanne Berardo Feliciano Latinitate Donata
|
Venetiis: Lucaeantonij Juntae [Giunta], 1541. The first edition of the Latin text as translated by Giovanni Bernardo Feliciano and an early edition of any Latin translation of AristotleOs OMorals with the Nicomachian EthicsO. Accompanied by the comments of the Greek philosophers Eustratius de Nic!e, Aspasius and Michel d' Eph!se, on the text of Aristotle. With very handsome engraved head and tail-pieces and large engraved historiated initials throughout. Folio, in antique Italian vellum covered boards with remnants of the leather ties, sometime rebacked in white pigskin with raised bands, lettered on the spine in manuscript in red. (32), 548, (2) with original blanks. A fine and handsome copy, the paper fresh and clean, binding with some age, not unpleasing and with some sympathetic restoration, endpapers renewed.. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THE TRANSLATION INTO LATIN BY THE ITALIAN SCHOLAR GIOVANNI BERNARDO FELICIANO. This is also the first of the Latin translations to be accompanied by the notes on Aristotle's text written by the Greek philosophers Eustratius de Nic!e, Aspasius and Michel d'Eph!se. The original Greek text containing these notes was published by Aldus in 1536, but here they accompany an edition of the text in Latin for the first time. Giovanni Bernardo Feliciano (c. 1490- c. 1552), was a professor of rhetoric, a scholar and a doctor. He produced several translations and scholarly editions of the great Greek writers. This is also a fine example of the elegance and beauty of the works to come from the presses of the Giunta family.

Institution de la religion chrétienne (1541)
|
###############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################

BIBLIA GERMANICA -
Biblia Das ist die gantze Heilige Schrifft, Deudsch, Auffs new zugericht. D. Mart[in] Luth[eri].
|
Folio (360 x 235 mm). Vgl. Bibelstammlung Stuttgart E 330 (datiert 1542); Schmidt, Die Illustration der Lutherbibel, 1522-1700, S. 219f. und Abb. 154; Zimmermann, Beiträge zur Bibelillustration des 16. Jhdts. (1924), S. 175, Nr. 12; Pietsch, Bibliographie der deutschen Bibel Luthers (WA II), Nr. 215; Koepplin/Falk, Lucas Cranach (1974), Nr. 281. Blind-tooled Renaissance binding on the first issue of the Old Testament of the exceedingly rare Leipzig Bible by Nikolaus Wolrab, illustrated by Lucas Cranach the Younger. It was only after the decease of George, Duke of Saxony ('the Beared'), a fervent opponent of Lutheran reform, on 17 April 1539 that Saxony and the city of Leipzig could join the Reformation under his successor Henry IV the Pious. The Leipzig born printer Nikolaus Wolrab who had published many anti Luhteran pamphlets was successful in his request for the privilege to print an edition of Martin Luther's revised Bible of 1540 and became thus a competitor in the profitable market of Bible editions. At the Wittenberg printer's urging Luther wrote a letter to Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony, in which he complains of a 'pirate edition' printed by 'the rascal' Wolrab, and claims, the Leipzig printer is making a profit at the expense of the legitimate printers and of God's Word. However the Elector resisted the request and Wolrab could finish his printing. To surpass the Wittenberg bibles, Wolrab even commissioned Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586) - who was the head of his father's printing shop since the late thirties - to cut eighteen full-page woodcuts for Wolrab's Bible, of which fifteen adorn the Old Testament. The large initials come from an alphabet used previously. Wolrab's bible edition however overstepped himself financially and he went first to Frankfurt an der Oder and, after coming back to Leipzig for a brief period, soon went to Bautzen where he founded the first printing press in that town in 1550 and where he died ten years later. - Slightly browned and stained throughout, few short tears in margins, lower corner of the first five leaves torn off, affecting only the printed marginalia on Aii verso. Title pasted down and therefore concealing duke Henry's coat of arms on verso. The lacking parts of the title border neatly supplied in ink. a few short tears in margins, browned, lower corner of first five leaves of the preface torn off (but not affecting text), light foxing and some waterstaines in places, a very well-preserved copy of this rarity. - Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, back on five raised bands, with two brass clasps. We can trace very few complete copies only of the Wolrab-Cranach-Bible: Parma (bound in 4 vols.), BL London, Cambridge, Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart (second issue of 1542), and Wolfenbüttel. Single parts of this bible are recorded in Weimar (Old Testament) and Gotha (the Psalms only). Provenance: Stephan Contzen with date [1]548 and some marginalia in places, probably by his hand. - Ms. name of Hans Heinrich Koller with date 1650 on first pastedown.
