The Durham Liber Vitae and its Context
|
Boydell & Brewer Ltd - The Durham Liber Vitae (London, British Library, MS Cotton Domitian A. vii) is one of seven surviving libri memoriales from the Carolingian period, and the only English example of its date. The book, which has been n otably little studied, contains several thousand names of persons associated with a Northumbrian church, probably Lindisfarne, but possibly Monkwearmouth/Jarrow. From around 1100, it was used to record the names of all Durham monk s, as well as of many lay people; family groups also appear, especially the families of the last monks before Henry VIII dissolved the cathedral monastery in 1539. It casts considerable light on how the church interacted with cont emporary lay and ecclesiastical society and in the process illuminates the basis of the church's position and its role in defining related communities and regions. Studies cover all aspects of the manuscript, its content and its c ontext. Plato
OPERA OMNIA. Nunc recens summa diligentia repurgata
|
Basel: Office Frobeniana , 1539. A highly important edition with the commentary of Simon Grynaeus, the celebrated Swiss astronomer and geographer. With the wonderul typography of Froben throughout, with large numbers and initials; with diagrams and atronomical illustrations of Tymaeus. Folio, splendid and beautiful calf of the time, impressed fully with fine toolwork in blind in overall designs on the borders and in in the centers of the covers. (12), 959, (14) Fine copy.. AN UNUSUALLY FINE AND HANDSOME COPY. Cited Ofor the elegance of the impressionO by Froeben. THE KING OF PHILOSOPHERS. ONE OF THE SUPREME TEXTS OF THE RENAISSANCE. Preceeded with the dedication of the great curator S. Grynaeus, the proem dedication to Lorenzo de Medici and the important Life of Plato written by Ficino the original translator of the manuscripts into Latin; index at the end; 36 of the Platonic dialogues and works(the Dialogues, 10 books of the Republic, 12 books of the Laws and 12 of the Letters), edited and with the commentary of Marsilio Ficino. A highly important edition of the Opera of Plato with the traslation of Marsilio Ficino, the first and most important of the modern epoch, in itself one of the primary movers of the humanism of the Renaissance. In 1462 by order and gift of Cosimo de Medici and with support of the Academy the manuscript translations were begun. They were concluded under the beneficence of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The translation, which was completed in the 1470's contributed in great measure to the rediscovery of critical thinking and of the disciplines of Greek scholarship. Ficino had beuan his translation under the patronage of Cosimo de Medici in 1463. The work was completed five years later and circulated in manuscript for several years before finally being printed in parts beginning in 1484. It wasn't until 1491 that and edition brought together for the first time the fundamental text of Plato with FicinoOs PLATONICA THEOLOGIA, the most important Renaissance interpretation of the great philosopher. In this groundbreaking work Ficino sets out to prove that a harmony can be found between Christian theology and Platonism. The conversion of these two modes of thought, the classic and the medieval was instrumental in the formation of the modern European identity. The importance Ficino placed on this work even extended to the printing and he was not pleased with the first edition which contained 7 pages of corrigenda. In contrast, Ficino was very pleased with the typographical correctness of the later 1491 edition and this printing in large measure comes with the most important of the textual corrections and emendations and changes. The editio princeps from the Greek texts was provided by Aldus in 1513. This edition was with the rich and important corrections of Grynaeus from one of the early Greek manuscripts. A beautiful and very pleasing example in a rarely encountered period binding with early ownership note on the title. There is no copy noted in either the British Museum catalogue or in Adams. A rare book and very important in the history of Greek and philosophical scholarship.

He was one of the principal 16th century anti-humanist and anti-reformatorian commentators on the gospel of St. John (his commentary on the gospel of St. John was published in the Enorrationum as part of his exposition of the four gospels). Little research is done on catholic commentators like Broickwy and therefore little is known about the author, although his work generated considerable interest at the time. Venedig, Francesco Marcolini, 1539. Graesse II 95. * Second imprint of the Italian translation by Francesco Angelo Coccio. With two printer's devices. Fine copy in bibliophilic polished tan calf with gilt fillets on spine and boards.

Fitzherbert, John (1460 - c. 1531) or Fitzherbert, Anthony, Sir (1470-1538)
Surveyinge
|
London: Thomas Berthelet, 1539. A rare early work on surveying, now thought to be the work of John Fitzherbert. Architectural border to title page. (4), 60 leaves. Collates complete. Tidy internally aside from some minor worming. Reasonable margins though possibly a trifle closer at the top margin. Contemporary occasional ink notes or marginalia. Very, very slight stain to left hand margin of last few leaves. Single wormhole to top margin starts at title page, getting slightly wider, but not affecting the text is joined by another wormhole in the right hand margin from leaf 30 onwards. From leaf 40 onwards they become tracks and start affecting the text slightly. Otherwise a tidy copy. 'Several other works were formerly but mistakenly attributed to Sir Anthony. The Boke of Husbandrie and The Boke of Surveyinge, both printed in 1523, were by one Master Fitzherbarde, but this is now known to have been the judge's brother John.' DNB. We can send images of this book on request.. Early Edition. Full Calf. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - 5.25 Inches.

Antverpiae, Apud Guilielmum Simonem, 1561. "A few of the things discussed are aqua vitae or brandywine, the effects of human saliva, whether it is better to sleep with the mouth closed or open, whether measles can be cured with red wine. It will not do, however, to dismiss this farrago too cavalierly, since it was often cited by subsequent learned authors, and since the numerous editions and translations of it show that it well suited the taste of the century" (cf. Aretino, Pietro
Le Lettre Di M. Pietro Aretino, Di Nuovo Con La Gionta Ristampate, E Con Somma Diligenza Riccorrette
|
Aluuise Tortis, Venice 1539 - Early reprint. 12mo. [5]leaves (title & table of contents), 224 leaves. Illustrated with a woodcut frontisportrait of the author on the title page. Text in Italian. Bound in contemporary vellum with manuscript title to spine and faint manuscript inscription to front panel. All edges gilt. Vellum bowed and slightly soiled from age. Gilt edges fading. First and last leaves repaired, with the last two leaves having suffered loss of text in places from worm damage. Additionally, a single small worm hole penetrates the margin of pages 209 forward. First and last leaves tanned and with fraying to the upper margin, not affecting text. Binding repaired, adding new matching endpapers and pastedowns. ** The first Volume of Aretino?s Letters was released by Francesco Marcolini in 1537, and later volumes were compiled and published in the decades that followed. This 'Tortis' edition differs only slightly from the Marcolini edition in that the letters here are more or less ordered alphabetically. The letters were of a sort unprecedented in Italian literature and today they offer historians a stunningly detailed depiction of renaissance Italy. The magic of Aretino?s style lay in his use of direct and common language, his penchant for detail, and his brilliant phrasing, which together evoke vivid mental pictures for his readers. He harnessed these literary skills to accumulate wealth by way of blackmail or praise and soon became one of the most feared men of his time, capable of destroying great men?s reputations. His gift and motivations were bluntly evident in his letters, and upon publication of this collection he quickly gained a legendary reputation not only in Italy but across Western Europe. Aretino corresponded with countless artists, thinkers, politicians, rulers, and clergymen. Among the letters contained in this volume are some addressed to Michelangelo, Pope Clement VII, Pietro Bembo, Francesco Marcolini, King Francis I, Jacopo Sansovino, Speroni Sperone, his close friend Titian, and Paolo Manutius. The most moving letter in this collection is that written to Madonna Maria de Medici concerning the death of her husband and Aretino?s lifetime friend, Giovanni dalle Bande Nere. Lynn Thorndike, VI, p. 393). Bon exemplaire. Ex-libris manuscrit sur le titre. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fitzherbert, John (1460 - c. 1531) or Fitzherbert, Anthony, Sir (1470-1538).
Surveyinge
|
Thomas Berthelet, London 1539 - A rare early work on surveying, now thought to be the work of John Fitzherbert.
|
Theocritus.
Idyllia, hoc est parva poemata XXXVI. Eiusdem epigrammata XIX. Eiusdem Bipennis & Ala.
|
Venice: Apud Salamandram. , 1539 - woodcut device to title and last leaf, faint toning in places, title lightly spotted, two ink ownership inscriptions to title (Pinsonneau and ?S. Genovesa Parisiensis?) and one to initial blank (Dampier), ff. 77, [1], 8vo., late eighteenth-century diced russia, boards bordered with a gilt fillet, backstrip with four raised bands between gilt fillets, second and fifth compartments gilt-lettered direct, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, front joint cracked but strong, joints and corners slightly rubbed, bookplates of Chatsworth and Thomas Dampier, good Textually a reprint of the 1516 Kallierges edition of the idylls of Theocritus (including the famous poems printed in the shape of an axe and angel?s wings), this edition is notable for having the first appearance of its striking printer?s device, showing a crowned salamander surrounded by flames. The device represented several printers ?at the sign of the salamander? in Venice, including Zanetti (who printed this volume, and whose name appears in the colophon) and later Scottus and several others, who often remained anonymous behind it (c.f. Bernstein, ?The Burning Salamander?, Notes 42, 1986). EDIT16 and BMSTC list this text volume together with the scholia, which Zanetti also reprinted from the Kallierges edition in 1539, as a single work, but there is more evidence that they were issued separately: EDIT16 maintains a separate listing for the scholia volume on its own, Adams does not list the scholia volume at all, and a number of the EDIT16- and BMSTC-listed holdings are for only one of the volumes. This copy was in the library of the Abbey of Saint Genevieve in Paris, which was dissolved during the French Revolution (and turned into the Lycée Henri-IV). Its book collections were preserved and nationalised as the ?Bibliothèque de Panthéon? - and twenty-five years later renamed back to Sainte Geneviève - but this volume was acquired, most likely during that upheaval, by the noted book collector Thomas Dampier (1749-1812), bishop of Ely, who had the binding made; his important collection of early books was sold after his death to the sixth Duke of Devonshire, greatly enriching the collections at Chatsworth House. Basilae:: apud Michaelem Isingrinium,, 1539.. Full rich brown calf old style: Round spine with raised bands, accented in gilt rule; author and title lettered on cream-colored spine label; fillets in blind extending onto covers from each band to terminate in trefoils with blind double fillets beyond. Small rent in upper inner area of title-page with a very old and good repair on verso. Library name stamped on lower edge of closed book.. Small 4to. [16] ff., 319, [1 (blank)] pp. . Justinus (3rd century A.D.) is known solely by his Historiarum Philippicarum libri XLIV, which he describes in his preface as a collection of the most important and interesting passages from the voluminous, but now lost, Historiae pillippicae et totius mundi origines et terrae situs, that Pompeius Trogus wrote during the era of Augustus.#11; This very nice Renaissance edition was edited and has a preface by Simon Grynaeus. In addition to the text, there are an extensive index, four full-page woodcut maps of parts of the ancient world, and Grynaeus's extensive commentary. The main text is printed in roman with a good scattering of woodcut historiated initials and is accompanied on the same page by Grynaeus commentary and notes in a smaller italic. His preface is printed in a larger italic face.#11; This copy has interesting, early, but now somewhat faded marginalia in a red or sepia ink. The marginalia is scattered and is at times heavy, other times light; in some sections, it is non-existent. #11; A rare edition: No copy traced via OCLC; VD16 locates only three copies in Europe.

PAPEUS, Petrus
Samarites comoedia de Samaritano evangelico
|
sub intersignio Rubri Castri (Typis Guilhelmi Montani), Antwerp 1539 - Recent full calf tooled in blind and gilt in a fine antique style 8vo . This Latin school comedy "The Samarian" was the most popular work by the Flemish dramatist, Petrus Papeus (fl. 1537-1541), who worked as a school rector in the West Flanders town of Meenen. It was, according to the preface, written to be performed in June 1537. This may be the first edition with Nijhoff & Kronenberg listing two editions that were published in the Southern Netherlands in 1539 with the other appearing in the small Flemish town of Bois le Duc by Ger. van der Hatart (N. & K. 4417). The work was reprinted the same year in Cologne along with Erasmus' "Carmen bucolicum" (cf. Vander Hagen III, p. 45). For a detailed account of the story line see his article in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie volume 25, p. 141. The work was very popular and became a staple of school play collections throughout the 16th and 17th century. A very nice copy of this rare neo-Latin comedy, handsomely printed with a very attractive woodcut title-border. The OCLC locates only two copies in US libraries (University of Chicago and University of Illinois) and none of the Bois le Duc imprint [32] pp. Fine architectural woodcut title border and woodcut printer's device on last leaf; woodcut head and tail pieces; Roman type; contemporary inscriptions on title-page. § Nijhoff & Kronenberg, Nederlandsche Bibliographie van 1500 tot 1540, I no. 1676; BM/STC Dutch p.165. Farnese.
Collection of 233 letters and 18 documents concerning the history of the Italian noble family, containing autographs by the 1st to the 8th and last Duke of Parma and Piacenza as well as by all important clerical and secular rulers which the family produced.
|
Parma, Piacenza, Rome, and other places, 3 July 1539 through 13 April 1723. Manuscripts on paper and vellum. Altogether 283 pp. From the wealth of letters and documents contained in this collection, only a few can be cited here as examples; it may be assumed with certainty that a careful study of the documents will yield new facts about the history of the Farnese family. A copious correspondence of Ottavio (1524-1586) with the Conte di San Secondo gives a detailed account of the organization of the salt monopoly and other tax affairs in the principalities of Parma and Piacenza. Curiously, the varying duties to be paid are apparently largely determined by the different building projects, debts, or dowries of the members of the family. The governments cooperated by exchanging lists of criminals and banished men: on 5 July 1583, Ottavio requests a list of all exiles, "li banditi capitalm(en)te della Giurisdizione di VS", and offers to cooperate with the Officio Criminale of Parma in these matters. The subjects of Francesco’s (1678-1727) correspondence with Frederico Rossi include family affairs - Farnese negotiates in the marriage crisis of Marchese Soragna, whose wife, the Duke of S. Secondo's sister, refuses to continue living under the same roof with her husband ("non volendo la dama coabitare col marito") and has fled to the monastery S. Caterina di Siena (includes a 2-page letter to the Marchesa di Soragna) -, letters of recommendation (such as that for Giovanni Fedolfi, logician and theologian, "esaminatore sinodale"), internal matters of the clergy, interventions on account of a prelate's libel suit, orders for arrest and banishment of the licentious priest Gio. Mezzardri (26 August 1698), efforts to accommodate troops, on the planning of a Corpus Christi procession, and for the exchange of artists, such as the musician Matteucci (1666-1737) for a church festivity. Apart from a Latin document (dated 26 May 1564) in which Camilla Gonzaga waives her claim to a donation by her husband Pietro Maria in favour of her first-born, Count Troilo Rossi, the collection also contains documents so diverse as Duarte Farnese’s intervention concerning Helena Orsini's inheritance (February 1591), his recommendation of Tiburtio Antonini at Filippo Colanna's suggestion, a letter by Margherita Farnese about an unsuccessful stay at a health resort in Lucca (14 July 1600), a 24-page document signed by Cardinal Odoardo on 20 May 1607 concerning the amalgamation of two Roman brotherhoods and listing all their possessions, or Ferrante Farnese’s appeals (April and November 1570) to his brother, the ruling Duke of Parma and Piacenza, that a banishment already passed be rescinded. - Includes several letters addressed to members of the Farnese family, among them 7 significant letters to Margaretha of Austria (daughter of Charles V, wife of Ottavio Farnese, Duchess of Parma and governor of the Netherlands). - A detailed catalog of all letters and documents is available upon request.

Basileae, Apud Michael Isingrand, 1539. in-8.12ff. 177pp. Bon exemplaire. Cf. John L. Flood et David J. Shaw, "Johannes Sinapius (1505-1560), hellenist and physicien in Germany and Italy" (Geneve, Droz, 1997).

J. Frölich, 1539., Strasbourg, - Small folio. 19th century half vellum. With half-page woodcut on title depicting two old men talking with a third man, sitting in a high chair, the names "Berosias" and "Anastres Tassri" printed above and "Die alten Weisen" underneath, full-page woodcut illustration showing a man offering a book to a king, numerous large woodcut vignettes, and 113 woodcut illustrations for the fables in text. (4), 107 leaves. Rare early sixteenth century edition, the fifteenth in all, of the so-called "Bidpai Fables", a popular early German fable collection, based on the "Pantsha Tantra", an ancient Indian classic. The fables were called Bidpai after the Hebrew translation of "Pantsha Tantra" meaning "Five Books". The collection contained a large number of fables in which animals were depicted, both in text and in illustrations, as a mirror for human behaviour within the human hierarchy. These animal fables were embedded into a number of larger frame stories which in their turn taught wisdom, courtesy and the right conduct for princes. The fables were first translated into German by Anton von Pforr, based upon the Latin "Directorium Humanae Vitae" by Johannes de Capua, on which most translations in Europe were based. This Johannes de Capua had already translated the fables into Latin in the 12th or 13th century, problably from a Hebrew manuscript. Both the Greek and Hebrew translations, made in the Middle-Ages in Europe of the Bidpai fables, were based upon Arabic manuscripts from the 8th century, and these were based again upon 6th century Persian manuscripts, by way of which the Bidpai fables came to Europe. In the 16th century the Bidpai fables belonged to the most popular books in Germany, however after 1600 the fables of Aesop and other popular fable books took their place. The Bidpai collection more lastingly left books of proverbs and wise sayings, like the "Seven Wise Men of Rome", books of examples, animal "mirrors", etc. to European literature. Comparison with earlier editions of the Bidpai fables - the Ulm edition from 1483, the Strasbourg edition from 1490, both described in Fairfax Murray, and the Grienninger edition from 1529 -, learns that the illustrations are all based on the same basic designs, but differ more or less in execution. The large number of decorative woodcut vignettes, also added to the present edition, were especially made for our publisher, they are not found in the Grienninger-editions. These vignettes run over the whole width of the page, and are often repeated. Mostly they are of ornamental design in white against black, but often they are historiated as well, comprising cherubs, grazing sheep, scenes of cherubs bringing a drink to a recumbent giant, etc. The woodcut on title refers to the story told in the preface, that Anastres Tassri, King of Edom, commissioned his physician Berosias to translate the book from Sanscrit into Persian. The full-page woodcut depicts King Dissles receiving the book from the wise master Sendebar. The book is printed in Gothic type, with legenda in the margins in a slightly smaller Gothic type. German incunables of the Bidpai fables are occasionally offered for sale, but 16th century editions seem to be of the utmost rarity. Good copy.- (Few stains; few lvs. restored). Metzner & Raabe, Kat. ill. Fabelausg. 1461-1990, Frankfurt, 1998, no. 20, 3; STC German, p. 908 (ed. of 1545); Fairfax Murray, German, 70-71 (ed. of 1483 and 1490); Fabula Docet 29 (first Pforr edition, ca. 1481).

Referencias: Palau 152137; Martín Abad 294; European Americana 539/20; Sabin 44586 A fine Brocar edition of one of the key Spanish histories, detailing memorable events up to the time of Charles V, including a long account of the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, mentioning the American possessions, and the curious statement that “Pedro Colon” was sent out with a fleet to explore the Atlantic (fol.161r). The work also contains a reference to the sensational discovery in a gold mine, probably in Peru, of a coin depicting one of the Caesars, thus proving that the Romans had reached America before the Spanish. It is not surprising therefore that the book may have suffered the rigours of censorship; the fact is that copies are extremely rare. As in the Latin edition there is an interesting essay on the ancient language of Spain, with a list of words in Spanish and Basque (fol.28v-29r). Mid-twentieth-century crushed brown morocco by Brugalla.

Farnese.
|
Parma, Piacenza, Rom u. a. O., 3. Juli 1539 bis 13. April 1723.. Handschriften auf Papier und Pergament. Insgesamt 283 SS..

Very rare and early work on astrology, meteorology and weather forecasting Paris, Jacques Kerver I,1539. Folio (28 x 20 cm). 19th century half linen painted in red and black; spine with label lettered in gold; boards covered with marbled paper. With Kerver's printer's device with two cocks standing on either side of a little tree on a pedestal with his monogram, on the title (Silvestre 52); some nice criblé woodcut initials and many astrological tables in the text. (4), 79 leaves. Very rare first edition after the extremely rare editio princeps which was printed in 1485 by Erhard Ratdolt in Venice (BMC V, 291; H* 13393), being the earliest printed collection of astrological weather predictions. The work is anonymous, but is generally attributed to the French astrologer Firmin de Beauval from Amiens, who flourished ca. 1335-1345. It is the first edition edited by Philip Jollain of Blery who has added also his scholarly notes. The prognostication is the only of Firmin's treatises which was ever printed. In essence it is a treatise on astrological meteorology and it is one of the first meteorological works ever published. Divided into seven chapters, the book deals respectively with the nature of different parts of the sky, the stars, seasons and climates; global climate changes due to great conjunctions, eclipses and movements of the sun; similar changes due to the respective movements of the sun and the moon; particular judgments arising from the same sets of causes; and predictions concerning rain and weather forecasting in general.Although the author is indebted to the writings of Ptolemy, Pliny, Johannes Hispalensis, Albertus Magnus and many Arabic authors such as Al-Kindi, Abu Ma'shar, Ali ibn Ridwan, Abraham ben Ezra, he drew also largely on contemporary popular knowledge and oral traditions. The work is dedicated by Philippus Jollainus to Joannes Robertus, dated Paris 1539 (f. (2)r-(3)r). On f. (3)v-(4)v follow a preface and three laudatory poems to the reader by Philippus Jollainus, Joannes Darud and Carolus Albosius Haeduus. Juvenal; Giovanni Britannico; Josse Badius
[Satyrae.] Iu. Iuvenalis Aquinatis satyrographi opus
|
Bernardinum de Bindonis Venice Bernardinum de Bindonis 1539 Reference: Renouard, Badius, II, 542, 15; Schweiger Latin I, 503; Folio (32 cm); [6], CLXII leaves;15 woodcut illustrations in text. Title page printed in red and black, with title framed within elaborately illustrated border. Remains of extensively decorated and inscribed endleaves, as described below. Bound in recent one-quarter tooled leather over wooden boards in period style, with leather and brass clasps. One clasp missing; lower board stained, with one corner chipped. Some worming, mostly marginal and rarely affecting text. Occasional ink stains, some of them significant. Occasional staining, especially in first signature. Few leaves browned. A Venice edition of the Satires of Juvenal, utilizing the text established by Giovanni Britannico at the beginning of the century. The two remaining endleaves of this illustrated Renaissance edition of Juvenal reveal a remarkable trajectory of ownership. Above a color sketch of a crest framed by grotesque figures, one owner inscribed "io Federico addi' 20 jugno 1567 comprai questo da un Hebreo" (I Federico, on June 20, 1567, bought this from a Jew). A different hand, on the last blank, inscribed a sycophantic paean in Latin to Paul IV (Pope from 1555-1559), ironically the very pope who instituted the Jewish ghetto in Rome, along with decrees that Jews must wear distinguishing yellow hats and shawls. The second inscription is decorated with a roughly-drawn capital I featuring a human face and a rampant cat. Still other inscriptions identify the source of the crest ("Evander Rampinus faciebat haec insignia"); and, despite Paul IV, who instituted the Index of Prohibited Books, another inscription echoes Juvenal's rage against censorship ("il pennello e a pugnare," the pen is for fighting). In all, the fly-leaves show a juxtaposition of crested nobles, ghettoed Jews, and intolerant clergy around an illustrated classical text produced at the height of the Italian Renaissance. Also reprints the 1498 preface to Juvenal by Badius Ascensius.

SERLIO, Sebastiano
Il primo libro d'Architettura... Il Secondo Libro
|
[Jehan Barbe] Folio [37 x 24 cm], (4) ff., 74 (i.e. 75) ff., including 1 blank and 1 unnumbered leaf (betw. 67 & 68). Bound in 18th-century half vellum and speckled boards, covers a little soiled, title and date gilt-stamped on morocco labels on spine, head of spine cracked.; light finger soiling in corners of some leaves; some general toning and occasional foxing in margin, small blue ink mark in blank margin of l. 70; overall a large, genuine, copy. Very good. A large-margined example of the first edition of the first two books of Serlio's general treatise, devoted to geometry, perspective and theatrical scenery, and as such considered "the first published account of modern theatrical practice." (Hewitt, The Renaissance Stage, p. 21.) As with the whole of the treatise, the outstanding feature of these two books lies in their overwhelmingly practical orientation, a welcome departure from the highly theoretical, not to say abstruse presentation found in earlier architectural works (mainly translations of Vitruvius). Serlio's intention was to offer architects "a pattern book in which the architect could find solutions for all sorts of problems." -- Blunt, Art and Architecture in France, p. 73. The work gives two methods for determining perspective, the second a form of the distance point method exemplified by its many woodcut diagrams and exercises. Book II also contains a detailed historical account of the theater Serlio built in Vicenza in 1539. The magnificent woodcuts of tragic, comic and rustic stage scenes "are the first regularly published scene designs" (Hewitt, op.cit.) and with their "Raphaelesque draughtsmanship" (so Kemp), they very likely owe something to the hand of Serlio's teacher, Baldassare Peruzzi. The work received numerous subsequent editions in many languages, though the woodcut illustrations were issued only in this edition. In the 19th century, Brunet and others speculated that an undated Venice edition (Fowler 304) may have been published prior, but this edition is now securely dated to c. 1551 and the work offered here is now unambiguously first. * Fowler 303; Berlin Kat. 2563; Dinsmoor, Art Bulletin 24 (l942) pp. 73-4; Schlosser p. 374; Mortimer (French) 492; Vagnetti EIIb12; Kemp, The Science of Art, p. 66; Hewitt, The Renaissance Stage, 21; Kernodle, From Art to Theatre, p. 181.

First edition. § This popular guide to health is an important source for the historical Dr Faustus. Begardi, City Physician of Worms, says he knows a number of people duped by Faust, an arogant swindler who boasted great skill in medicine and referred to himself as another Paracelsus. He mentions Faust as a man who was well known, but of whom nothing had been heard lately. The vivid title woodcut (160 x 135mm) is a medical scene showing the male patient on a bed attended by two women and a young physician. The text contains some fine white on black woodcut initials decorated with stylised plant forms.

PAPEUS, Petrus
Samarites comoedia de Samaritano evangelico
|
sub intersignio Rubri Castri (Typis Guilhelmi Montani), Antwerp 1539 - Unbound pamphlet 8vo .

Bel exemplaire. Moreau 1523. Renouard, Bade III, 339. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Venice Bernardinum de Bindonis 1539 Reference: Renouard, Badius, II, 542, 15; Schweiger Latin I, 503; Folio (32 cm); [6], CLXII leaves;15 woodcut illustrations in text.
