DURER, Albrecht
Institutiones Geometricarum libris
|
Paris: Christian Wechel, 1535. Second edition (second issue) of this treatise outlining the artist!s theory of !the work of art as a natural object!, which he both wrote and illustrated himself and which became an accepted aesthetic dogma until the 19th century. Far more than the German original of 1525, this translation by the humanist Camerarius brought the treatise to the attention of the whole of Europe. As a theoretical statement by !the last major painter to be counted a significant geometer! (Kemp), the work is naturally of interest for applications in Durer!s own oeuvre as well as for the history of perspective. After his encounter with Luca Pacioli in Italy, Durer became convinced of how close the links are between art and mathematics and devoted himself to the study of form through the resources offered by arithmetic and geometry. The result was the present work. In this work Durer teaches the principles of perspective and explains the application of practical geometry to drawing and painting. It became a very influential text as its audience broadened from artists to architects, sculptors, and different craftsmen, and was translated and reprinted several times. Panofsky describes the treatise!s importance as three-fold: for the technical innovation in the construction of a perspective apparatus in which the eye of the observer is dispensed with entirely; for being the first literary document !in which a strictly representational problem received a strictly scientific treatment at the hands of a Northerner!; and for emphasizing that !perspective is not a technical discipline destined to remain subsidiary to painting or architecture, but an important branch of mathematics, capable of being developed into what is now known as general projective geometry.! ! Panofsky, p. 252 Book Three contains Durer!s famous treatise on the just shaping of Roman capital letters and gothic or !Textur! letters built up by means of small geometrical forms, a method original with Durer. (This text was translated into English by R.T. Nichol for publication by the Grolier Club, Of the just shaping of letters, New York, 1917.) * Mortimer, French I.183; Vagnetti E II.b7; Panofsky, The Life and Art of Albrecht Durer, Chapter 8, !Durer as a theorist of Art!, esp. 247-60; Kemp, Science of Art, 53ff.. Small folio [30.5 x 20.25 cm], (4) ff., 581 (i.e. 185) pp., (verso blank), (1) f., with extensions on p6 and q1 as required by Mortimer. Bound in quarter calf and marbled papers over boards c. 1900, raised bands on gilt spine with calf corners, endpapers renewed. Spine worn and covers slightly scuffed, boards exposed at corners. 16th-century ink ownership inscription of the College de Tournon in upper blank margin of title; Iiii r cropped at right margin; reinforcement at fold in double-page plate (p4); some minor, pale waterstaining in lower blank margin of title and on verso of last leaf; scattered minor foxing or spotting to a handful of leaves. Still, in all, very good.

GROTIUS, HUGO; J. BARBEYRAC
The Rights of War and Peace, In Three Books...
|
Grotius, Hugo [1535-1645]. The Rights of War and Peace, in Three Books: Wherein are Explained, The Law of Nature and Nations, and The Principal Points Relating to Government. Written in Latin by the Learned Hugo Grotius, And Translated into English. To Which are Added, All the Large Notes of Mr. J. Barbeyrac. London: Printed for W. Innys [et al.], 1738. [iv], xxxvi, 817 pp. Folio (14" x 19"). Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Faint crease through center of half-title, negligible dampwrinkling to edges in a few places, interior notable clean and bright. A notably handsome copy. $1,750. * First English edition with Barbeyrac's notes. Lowndes says this is the "best edition;" Marvin says Barbeyrac's notes are excellent. First published in Paris in 1625, The Rights of War and Peace established the system of modern public international law, based on the concept of "droit naturel," a morality-based law that superseded the personalities of individuals or nations. Grotius describes the situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines the principles of armed combat. Though based on Christian natural law, Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he pointed to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. Lowndes, Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature (rev. ed.) III:950. Ulrich Asendorf, Pastor i.R., lebt in Hannover.

|
###############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################

Liber sextus. Brunet, 24969. Absent a Graesse. §Plein Velin d'epoque. Edition-originale.com. pspan style="font-family: Arial;"xxxix+289 pages. Octavo (9 a!! x 6 A! a!!) bound in full leather with black and red spine labels on raised bands and gilt lettering. From the library of George M Foster. Reprint.br /br /Juan Bautista (de) Pomar (c. 1535 a!! 1590) was an historian and writer interested in pre-Columbian Aztec history. Based on references by Fray Juan de Torquemada, we can estimate that he was born in 1535 at Texcoco. He was the great grandson of Nezahualcoyotl, and was half-Spanish on his father's side. Considered noble by the Spaniards, he was able to obtain one of his great-grandfather's royal houses, known as the Netzahualcoyotl, in Texcoco. Pomar was raised as a Christian but learned Aztec tradition from his mother. He was bilingual and spoke and wrote in both Spanish and the native language of the Aztecs, Nahuatl. He is credited with one of the most important compilations of Nahuatl poetry, emRomances de los seA!ores de Nueva EspaA!a/em. Pomar's major work includes an account of the Aztecs and Tlatelolcas emRelaciA3n de Juan Bautista Pomar/em completed in 1582. He interviewed aged Native Americans, who recounted memory of the older and lost customs of their people. His account, written at the suggestion of the protomedic of Phillip II of Spain, complements with the works of Bernardino de Sahagun and Fernando de Alva CortA!s Ixtlilxochitl. Pomar also wrote an account with the intention of claiming his rights to the legacy of Nezahualcoyotl. br /br /Zurita, or Zorita, Alonso (thoo-ree'-tah), Spanish statesman, born in New Castile about 1500; died in Seville about 1570. He studied law, was appointed in 1544 auditor of the audiencia of Santo Domingo, and was sent two years later to organize the administration of New Granada at Santa Marta and Cartagena. Returning to Santo Domingo in 1549, he was transferred a few months later to the audiencia of Los Confines or Comayagua, and, visiting nearly the whole country, organized courts of justice everywhere during a sojourn of three years. He was promoted member of the audiencia of Mexico in 1553, retired from active service about 1564, and then returned to Spain. He studied in America the early history and antiquities of the Indians, and addressed several interesting memorials to the king, one of which was printed in the 2d volume of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalcetas emColeccion de documentos para la historia de Mexico/em (Mexico, 1858-66). Another memorial, preserved in the archives of San Francisco in Mexico, was utilized by Lorenzo Boturini and Father Clavigero, and is also mentioned in Jose Mariano Beristain's ratalogue, under the title of emBreve y sumaria Relacion de los Caciques y SeA!ores y sus maneras, y diferencia que habia de ellos en la Nueva EspaA!a, Leyes y Costumbres de los Indies y Tributes que pagabart sus Principes/em. An abridged copy of it was published in Jose F. Ramirez's emColeccion de Documentos ineditos relatives al Descubrimiento, Conquista, y Colonizacion de las Posesiones Espanolas en America y Oceania/em, but the original narrative was for the first time printed in its entirety in a French translation in Henry Ternaux-Compans's collection, under the title emRapports sur les differentes classes de chefs dans la Nouvelle Espagne/em (Paris, 1840). Zurita wrote also a treatise on taxation and, according to Boturini, a emNarrative of Facts concerning New Spain/em, which is lost.br /br /George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. TABV MODER SICI & SARDI 1535 LIONE

PLINY. GAIUS PLINIUS SECUNDUS (KNOWN AS PLINY THE ELDER).:
C. PLINII SECUNDI HISTORIA MUNDI
|
Basel, 1535. denuo emendata, non paucis locis ex diligenti ad pervetusta et optimae fidei exemplaria collatione nunc primu[m] animadversis castigatisq[ue], quemadmodum evidenter in Sigismundi Gelenij annotationibus operi adnexis apparet. Adiunctus est Index copiosissimus. Printer's names from colophon on page 671, Latin text, Basel, per Hieronymum Frobenium, Io. Hervagium, & Nicolaum Episcopium, 1535. Folio, 370 x 245 mm, 14½ x 9¾ inches, printer's pictorial device on title page, on verso page 671 and on verso of final leaf, with 37 large historiated initials and small decorated initials in the Table, pages (36), 671, (181), 51 of these unnumbered pages contain Gelenius' annotations, followed by 130 pages of index, bound in full contemporary blind tooled pig-skin over wooden boards, with 2 brass clasps in working order, raised bands to spine with blind tooling in compartments, no lettering. Covers soiled and stained, 110 mm (4½ inch) cut to leather on upper cover, small loss of leather to lower corner on upper board, the other corners slightly worn, 4 wormholes to lower cover, 1 to upper cover, red stain filling lowest compartment of spine, upper hinge cracked at top 25 mm (1 inch", tiny crack to lower hinge at top, "Plinius" inked neatly across fore-edges, large handcoloured old armorial bookplate to front pastedown, with most of name and part of motto erased, inscription below bookplate erased and messy stain above it, old ink inscription erased in upper margin of title page, 4 small old paper repairs to reverse of title page, 3 at inner edge and 1 in blank area needed because of slight damage caused by horizontal crease which is repeated on A2, single small wormhole in inner margin from title to page 71, another to fore-edge of last 7 leaves of index, 2 very small closed margin edge tears, tiny closed tear to upper edge of 6 consecutive pages, a few brief early marginal notes, a little neat underlining, 1 pointing hand, contents otherwise very clean and bright. Pasted onto rear pastedown is a large sheet of paper with a drawing of a labyrinth on it in old ink and a reference to in Latin mentioning the story of Theseus and Ariadne. Binding tight and sound. A good sound copy of this classic encyclopedic work. This is the first printing of the Naturalis Historia with annotations by the Bohemian humanist Gelenius. The text is preceded by a preface by Erasmus of Rotterdam, reprinted from his edition of 1525. Gaius Plinius Secundus, known as Pliny the Elder, was born in Como, Italy, in A.D. 23. By the time he died 56 years later, he had been a cavalry officer, an adviser to emperors and the author of at least 75 books, not to mention another 160 volumes of unpublished notebooks. He is remembered today for just one of those works, his 37-volume Naturalis Historia (also entitled Historia Mundi), in which he planned to "set forth in detail all the contents of the entire world." Pliny describes in detail the nature of the physical universe: geography, anthropology, zoology, botany, and the medicinal uses of plants and curatives derived from the animals, among a host of other topics including mathematics, astronomy, agriculture, history and the arts and letters. Although dubious as a work of science, Pliny's Historia Naturalis provides a unique glimpse into the world view of ancient Rome. It is a wonderful melange of the real and the fantastic, the never was and the never could be. He wrote of dog-headed people who communicated by barking, and people with no heads at all, their eyes in their shoulders. He wrote of snakes that launch themselves skyward to catch high-flying birds, and of the "basilisk serpent" of Africa, which kills bushes on contact, bursts rocks with its breath and is so venomous that when one was killed by a man on horseback, "the infection rising through the spear killed not only the rider but also the horse." The work became a model for all later encyclopedias in terms of the breadth of subject matter examined, the need to reference original authors, and a comprehensive index list of the contents. The work was dedicated to the emperor Titus, son of Pliny's close friend, the emperor Vespasian, in the first year of Titus' reign. It is the only work by Pliny to have survived, and the last that he published, lacking a final revision at his sudden and unexpected death. Images sent on request.

BUDi Guillaume;
De Transitu Hellenismi ad Christianismum.
|
Parisiis Ex officina Rob. Stephani 1535 In-4 de (6)-132-(2) ff., velin souple de l'epoque. Edition originale.

Lyons : Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel, 1535. Folio (16 3/8 x 11 2/8 inches). Large woodcut on title-page, 49 fine double-page woodcut maps ("Europae", map 4 remargined with some decorative border and letterpress in facsimile, one marginal repair not affecting image or text) and one single-page map, most with text on versos enclosed within elaborate woodcut borders (attributed to Hans Holbein and Urs Graf); text with 4 large woodcut diagrams and 2 full-page woodcuts of a diagram and armillary sphere showing the projection of the winds by Albrecht Durer (verso of map l4), woodcut initials. Near contemporary paneled calf, each cover decorated with broad borders of blind fillets and elaborate roll tool, with gilt fleurons at each corner, the central panel decorated with small gilt tools, remains of two pairs of brass clasp and catches (rebacked to style, extremities worn). The first edition to be edited by Michael Villanovanus, better known as Servetus (1511-1553), born at Villanueva, in Aragon, Spain. While working as an editor for the publisher Trechsel he wrote the preface and many of the modern descriptions on the verso of the celebrated maps. He also edited a second edition printed at Vienne in the Dauphine, in 1541. For his writings against the Holy Trinity and infant baptism Servetus was burnt at the stake in 1553. However there were forty counts of heresy against him, including the offence of having asserted, in the text accompanying map 41 (The Holy Land), that Palestine was not as fertile as it was generally believed. Many copies of the book were burned with him on the orders of John Calvin, although the offending passage was not actually written by Servetus, and had appeared previously in the 1522 and 1525 editions, and was pointedly omitted from the second edition of 1541. Of the fifty magnificent maps four relate in some way to America: the "Tabula Terre Nova", number 28, with an account of the voyages and discoveries of Columbus on the verso; "Norbegia et Gottia", number 34, showing Greenland as a peninsula of Europe; "Tabula Nova Orbis", number 49, attributed by some to Columbus and known as the "Admiral's Map", and by others to Vespuccius; and "Tabula Totius Orbis", number 50, the celebrated new map of the world by Lorenz Fries, first used in the Gruninger edition of 1522, and the first map in an edition of Ptolemy with the name 'America', which appears on a portion of the South American Continent. The work is essentially in three parts: the text, comprising the new Latin translation by the humanist Wilibald Pirckheimer (1470-1530), edited by Servetus; the maps, 27 depicting the ancient world and 22 of the modern world, with one map of Lotharingia; and the index. Rare first edition of the complete suite of engravings of Michelangelo's frescoes for the Sistine Chapel by the Mantuan engraver Adamo Scultori, the earliest comprehensive graphic record of this ceiling. Of art historical interest on two counts, the series was an important means for the dissemination of designs that revolutionized Renaissance painting. It also includes the only iconography of the Prophet Jonah and surrounding figures (nos. 62-65), which Michelangelo had destroyed in 1535 in order to make room for the Last Judgement.

Lyons : Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel, 1535. - Folio (16 3/8 x 11 2/8 inches). He also edited a second edition printed at Vienne in the Dauphiné, in 1541.
|
First edition of this very attractive Venetian festival book by the Librarian of the Marciana, withfine aquatint plates of the barques, triumphal arch and machina for the procession of Napoleon up the Grand Canal. Napoleon stayed ten days in Venice and the Venetians laid on various spectacles each and every day, among them regattas on the Grand Canal, acrobats of human pyramids, fireworks, etc. The La Fenice theatre entertained Napoleon three times. First there was a theatre spectacle with singing and music, the Giudizio di Giove, by Lauro Corniani Algarotti; with the theatre decked out in the most sumptuous colours and additional festival architecture. Then there was a ball held in the theatre adorned with, as Morelli stresses repeatedly, a complete new and different colour scheme and new festival architecture; lastly there was an evening of illuminations.Cicognara 1535; Vinet 533; Oechslin-Buschow. Festarchitektur, Stuttgart 1984, plates 113-114; Venezia nell'eta di Canova, 1978, no. 228; not in Ruggieri. Venice, nella Tipografia Picotti, 1808.

Johannes Petreius, Nuremberg:: Johannes Petreius,, 1535.. Editio Princeps. First Greek/Latin edition.. Contemp. vellum over boards, rebacked with old spine laid-on, label gilt (rubbed);a.e.g., t.p. soiled, small wormhole in blank inner margin of first three leaves; wormtrack in blank margin of last three leaves; wormtrack in last text leaf affecting a few letters; one old marginal notation in Greek; occ. light spots and minor edge stain but a very good copy with ample margins.. 4to. 2 vols in 1.. The first edition of the Greek text of Ptolemy's 'Tetrabiblos' or Quadripartium (consisting of four books) and the of the 'Karpos' (Centiloquium-- a collection of 100 astrological aphorisms erroneously attributed to Ptolemy. [The Karpos has been attributed to Ahmad ben Yusuf al-Misri (835-912). See: Sholomo Sela's Abraham Ibn Ezra and the Rise of Hebrew Science,2003; p321-2)]. These are followed by the first edition of Joachim Camerarius' Latin translation of the first two books and of passages from the third and fourth of the Tetrabiblos, and by Giovanni Pontano's Latin version of the Karpos. Next come seven pages of annotations by Camerarius on the first two books of the Tetrabiblos, Matteo Guarimberto's 'Opusculum de Radiis et Aspectibus Planetarum', Ludovicus De Rigius' 'Aphorismi Astrologici', and, finally, Camerarius' complete translation of the third and fourth books of the Tetrabiblos. #11; 'Ptolemy ... regards the Tetrabilblos as the natural complement to the Almagest: as the latter enables one to predict the positions of the heavenly bodies, so the former expounds the theory of their influences on terrestrial things. The introductory chapters are devoted to a defense of astrology against chrages that it cannot achieve what it claims and that even if it can, it is useless ... From the obvious terrestrial physical effects of the sun and moon, he infers that all heavenly bodies must produce physical effects... By careful observation of the terrestrial manifestations accompanying the various recurring combinations of celestial bodies, he believes it possible to erect a system which, although not mathematically certain, will enable one to make useful predictions... Book I explains the technical concepts of astrology, book II deals with influences on the earth in general ('astrological geography' and weather predictions), and book III and IV with influences on human life.' [DSB]#11;"Ptolemy's treatise on astrology, the Tetrabiblos, was the most popular astrological work of antiquity and also enjoyed great influence in the Islamic world and the medieval Latin West. The Tetrabiblos is an extensive and continually reprinted treatise on the ancient principles of horoscopic astrology in four books (Greek tetra means "four", biblos is "book"). That it did not quite attain the unrivalled status of the Almagest was perhaps because it did not cover some popular areas of the subject, particularly electional astrology (interpreting astrological charts for a particular moment to determine the outcome of a course of action to be initiated at that time), and medical astrology.#11;The great popularity that the Tetrabiblos did possess might be attributed to its nature as an exposition of the art of astrology and as a compendium of astrological lore, rather than as a manual. It speaks in general terms, avoiding illustrations and details of practice. Ptolemy was concerned to defend astrology by defining its limits, compiling astronomical data that he believed was reliable and dismissing practices (such as considering the numerological significance of names) that he believed to be without sound basis.#11;Much of the content of the Tetrabiblos may well have been collected from earlier sources; Ptolemy's achievement was to order his material in a systematic way, showing how the subject could, in his view, be rationalized. It is, indeed, presented as the second part of the study of astronomy of which the Almagest was the first, concerned with the influences of the celestial bodies in the sublunar sphere. Thus explanations of a sort are provided for the astrological effects of the planets, based upon their combined effects of heating, cooling, moistening, and drying.#11;Ptolemy's astrological outlook was quite practical: he thought that astrology was like medicine, that is conjectural, because of the many variable factors to be taken into account: the race, country, and upbringing of a person affects an individual's personality as much if not more than the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the precise moment of their birth, so Ptolemy saw astrology as something to be used in life but in no way relied on entirely." The health resort of Salerno, a port near Naples, became the site of the first university in Europe. In spite of the presence of a bishop, the university remained a completely secular institution where medicine was first treated as a separate science. Probably originating about 1160, the Regimen sanitatis had greater popular influence than virtually any other medieval medical tract. The work is filled with what is essentially common sense advise - - - don't eat too much, exercise moderately, keep yourself clean, etc. For the modern enthusiast of the Middle Ages, this is an ideal source for information on daily life, beliefs, thoughts, and practices; it is also a source for authentic attitudes and prescriptions concerning every day foodstuffs, such as vegetables, herbs, and meat, along with advice on when to eat, how much to consume, and what foods were safe and which should be avoided to prevent disease. Paynel (fl.1528-1567), the canon of Merton Abbey, here includes the Latin verses attributed to Joannes de Medolano (fl.1100) or John of Milan. Many authorities believe that John wrote the poem when he was head of the medical school at Salerno. The commentary Paynel translated is purported to be that of Arnoldus de Villanova (see Eimas, Heirs of Hippocrates, 77). [Attributes: First Edition]

VITRUVIO POLIO, Marco
Heirs of Aldus and Andreas Torresano. Venice:: Heirs of Aldus and Andreas Torresano., 1535.. 18th c. Italian vellum, gilt spine, a few small worm holes in spine, edges red, marbled paste-downs,old owner's name removed from t.p., small hole in t.p., a few old stains, some leaves browned [gathering FF as usual], some occ. marginalia, but the rest in fine clean condition.. 8vo.150 x 98mm.. Aldine anchor device on t.p. and recto of HH8.(A72 - Z36). Lactantius (fl. 320) an eminent father of the church, was, as some say, the most eloquent of all ecclesiastical Latin authors. He formed himself upon Cicero, and wrote in such a pure, smooth, and natural style, and so much in the taste and manner of the Roman Orator, that he is generally distinguished as 'the Christian Cicero.' #11;"He well merits the designation of the "Christian Cicero" bestowed on him by the humanists, for he exhibits many of the shortcomings as well as the graces of his master. Among the works of his pen extant, the earliest is the "De Opificio Dei", written in 303 or 304 during the Diocletian persecution, and dedicated to a former pupil, a rich Christian named Demetrianius. The apologetic principles underlying all the works of Lactantius are well set forth in this treatise, which may be considered as an introduction to his great work "The Divine Institutions" (Divinarum Institutionum Libri VII), written between 303 and 311. This the most important of all the writings of Lactantius is systematic as well as apologetic and was intended to point out the futility of pagan beliefs and to establish the reasonableness and truth of Christianity. It was the first attempt at a systematic exposition of Christian theology in Latin, and though aimed at certain pamphleteers who were aiding the persecutors by literary assaults on the Church, the work was planned on a scale sufficiently broad enough to silence all opponents. The strengths and the weakness of Lactantius are nowhere better shown than in his work. The beauty of the style, the choice and aptness of the terminology, cannot hide the author's lack of grasp on Christian principles and his almost utter ignorance of Scripture. The "dualistic and panegyrical" passages, which have been such a puzzle to students of Lactantius, are manifestly not from his pen, but from that of someone who lived close to his time, probably a rhetorician of Trier. The "Epitome Divinarium Institutionum", made by Lactantius himself at the request of a friend named Pentadius, is much more than a mere abbreviation, rather a more summary treatment of the subject dealt with in the older work. Another treatise, "De Ira Dei", directed against the Stoics and Epicureans, is supplementary to the "Divine Institutions" (II,xvii,5) and deals with anthropomorphism in its true sense. Knowing the bent of Lactantius's mind it is not surprising that the only historical work we have from his pen, "De Mortibus Persecutorum", should have an apologetic character. In this work, we have an account of the frightful deaths of the principal persecutors of the Christians, Nero, Dormitian, Decius, Valerian, Aurelian, and the contemporaries of Lactantius himself, Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius, and Maximus. This work, not withstanding the manifest bias of the author, is of prime importance as a source of the last and greatest of the persecutions, though, somewhat strangely, the style is not so perfect might be expected. The full text is found in only one manuscript, which bears the title, "Lucii Caecilii liber ad Donatum Confessorem de Mortibus Persecutorium". Many attempts have been made to show that the work was not written by Lactantius; however the coincidences of name, both of author and recipient the similarities in style and train of thought between this and other works of Lactantius, are too striking to admit of such a possibility. The chronological difficulties which Brandt thought he discovered are shown by Harnack to have no weight (Chronologie, II, 423). Of the poems attributed to Lactantius only one, besides the "Hodoeporicum", is genuine, viz., the " De Ave Phoelous", an account, in eighty-five distichs, of the fabulous eastern bird which is reborn from its own ashes every thousand years, The poem "De Resurrectione" was written by Venantius Fortunatus..."
