WITZEL, Georg

Der Hunderst vnnd zwentzigist Psalm Dauids, Christlich ausgelegt
Melchior Lotter, Leipzig 1535 19th century paper covered boards. BOUND WITH WITZEL, Georg. Adhortatiuncula, ut vocetur concilium, ad archiepiscopum Moguntinen. &c. privatim scripta a Georgio Vuicelio. Leipzig: Ex officina Nicolae Fabri, 1534. 4to. [8] pp. (last page blank). 4to . I. Rare text on the 120th psalm of David by the German humanist Georg Witzel (1501-1573) who was active in church reform but stayed with the Catholic Church which led to numerous difficulties in his professional life. Witzel, who had taken holy orders, nevertheless married in 1523 and received help from Luther. He always believed the break in the church to be just a temporary and would eventually be healed. This caused friction with the reformers when he sought a university position at Erfurt and later with the Catholic Church when he sought a Papal dispensation. "Without quite realizing it, Witzel never really abandoned his hopes of seeing the Catholic Church reformed along humanistic lines" (see. Contemporaries of Erasmus, III, pp. 458-9). OCLC only locates a microfilm. II. Open letter from Witzel to Albert of Brandenburg, Archbishop and Elector of Mainz, Cardinal (1490-1545) in 1532. Albert was an important and influential German humanist who strove to prevent the radicalization of the religious conflict touched off by Luther and his followers. He often used his office to stall or delay the persecution of religious offenders to avoid an open rebellion on the part of the adherents of Luther. (see Contemporaries of Erasmus, I, 184-187). [40] pp. Blind stamp of the Rochester Seminary Library (deaccessioned). § I. VD16, W3965; Pegg, Swiss, 5344; Richter, Witzel Bibl. 15. II. VD 16, W 3842; Pegg, Swiss, 5302; Richter, Witzel Bibl. 3.

CINGULARIUS AURIMONTANUS, HIER.

Sm.8vo. Old boards. (75) lvs. One of the earliest school dictionaries of Latin synonyms by the Silesian humanist and school-director Hieronymus Cingularius Aurimontanus, Latin for Hieronymus Gürtel von Wildenberg (ca. 1465-1558). He was the founder of a famous German private school at Goldberg, for which he composed a number of school books after the latest pedagogical opinions and educational methods. The present school dictionary, first published at Wittenberg in 1513, was rather successful, Claes recording some 20 editions, but not the present one. The book is divided into two parts, the first part giving words in German, alphabetically arranged, with a wide choice of Latin synonyms, and the second part lists a large number of Latin expressions, alphabetically arranged according to the main word. Good copy of a rare edition.- (Sl. thumbed and browned). Hülse, Beitr. Gesch. Buchdruckerkunst Magdeburg, in: Geschichts-Blätter Stadt u. Land Magdeburg, 1880-1882, 196; Cf. STC German 210 (other ed.); this ed. not in Claes, Bibl. Verz. deutschen Vocab. u. Wörterb. bis 1600, 1977; not in NUC.

Epictetus.

Arrianou Eriktetos [sic] Arriani Epictetvs
[from the colophon: Venice: In aedibus Bartholomaei Zanetti Casterzagensis, aere uero, & diligentiaIoannis Francisci Trincaueli, September] 1535. Octavo. [216] ff., including the blank BB6 and BB7. Woodcut printer’s device on title and last leaf. Text in Greek letter. Ornamental Greek initials and headpieces. Dedication to Georges de Selve (1506-1541), French ambassador to Venice. Late seventeenth-century mottled calf. Gilt spine, tooled in compartments, gilt borders on covers, green speckled edges. A remarkably fine, clean copy. From the library of the Earl of Macclesfield, with the South Library armorial bookplate and the embossed stamp on the title-page and following leaf. Editio princeps of Arrian’s four books of the Discourses of Epictetus Epictetus (ca. 55–ca. 135), the very influential Stoic philosopher, was a slave in the household of Nero, and was given his freedom after the emperor’s death. Around 93 AD Domitian banished all philosophers from Rome, and ultimately, from Italy, and Epictetus traveled to Nicopolis in Epirus, Greece, where he founded a philosophical school. One of his students was the historian Arrian (ca. 86 - after 146), who took careful notes. Like Socrates, whom he admired, Epictetus wrote nothing for publication. Everything we know of Epictetus comes through Arrian’s writings, including both the Discourses, based on his lecture notes, and his later summary of Epictetus’ philosopohy, the Encheiridion. Likewise, Arrian is our greatest source of knowledge of Greek military tactics (Tactica) and our principle source of information about Alexanbder the Great (Anabasis). Vettore Trincavelli (1491-1598) was professor of medicine at the University of Padua. He published a number of medical books in Latin. An eminent Greek scholar, he edited the works of several Greek authors who had never before been translated in their original language, often printed by Bartholomaeus Zanetti. His editions of Themistius, trobaeus, and Hesiod are noteworthy. OCLC records fifteen copies worldwide. North American copies include Duke, Columbia, the Universities of Iowa and Illinois, Northwestern, the University of California at San Diego, and Dalhousie University.Dibdin, 4th edition, Vol. I, p. 328

Editio Princeps. First Greek/Latin edition. The first edition of the Greek text of Ptolemy's 'Tetrabiblos' or Quadripartium (consisting of four books) and the of the 'Karpos' (Centiloquium-- a collection of 100 astrological aphorisms erroneously attributed to Ptolemy. [The Karpos has been attributed to Ahmad ben Yusuf al-Misri (835-912). See: Sholomo Sela's Abraham Ibn Ezra and the Rise of Hebrew Science,2003; p321-2)]. These are followed by the first edition of Joachim Camerarius' Latin translation of the first two books and of passages from the third and fourth of the Tetrabiblos, and by Giovanni Pontano's Latin version of the Karpos. Next come seven pages of annotations by Camerarius on the first two books of the Tetrabiblos, Matteo Guarimberto's 'Opusculum de Radiis et Aspectibus Planetarum', Ludovicus De Rigius' 'Aphorismi Astrologici', and, finally, Camerarius' complete translation of the third and fourth books of the Tetrabiblos. 'Ptolemy ... regards the Tetrabilblos as the natural complement to the Almagest: as the latter enables one to predict the positions of the heavenly bodies, so the former expounds the theory of their influences on terrestrial things. The introductory chapters are devoted to a defense of astrology against chrages that it cannot achieve what it claims and that even if it can, it is useless ... From the obvious terrestrial physical effects of the sun and moon, he infers that all heavenly bodies must produce physical effects... By careful observation of the terrestrial manifestations accompanying the various recurring combinations of celestial bodies, he believes it possible to erect a system which, although not mathematically certain, will enable one to make useful predictions... Book I explains the technical concepts of astrology, book II deals with influences on the earth in general ('astrological geography' and weather predictions), and book III and IV with influences on human life.' [DSB] "Ptolemy's treatise on astrology, the Tetrabiblos, was the most popular astrological work of antiquity and also enjoyed great influence in the Islamic world and the medieval Latin West. The Tetrabiblos is an extensive and continually reprinted treatise on the ancient principles of horoscopic astrology in four books (Greek tetra means "four", biblos is "book"). That it did not quite attain the unrivalled status of the Almagest was perhaps because it did not cover some popular areas of the subject, particularly electional astrology (interpreting astrological charts for a particular moment to determine the outcome of a course of action to be initiated at that time), and medical astrology. The great popularity that the Tetrabiblos did possess might be attributed to its nature as an exposition of the art of astrology and as a compendium of astrological lore, rather than as a manual. It speaks in general terms, avoiding illustrations and details of practice. Ptolemy was concerned to defend astrology by defining its limits, compiling astronomical data that he believed was reliable and dismissing practices (such as considering the numerological significance of names) that he believed to be without sound basis. Much of the content of the Tetrabiblos may well have been collected from earlier sources; Ptolemy's achievement was to order his material in a systematic way, showing how the subject could, in his view, be rationalized. It is, indeed, presented as the second part of the study of astronomy of which the Almagest was the first, concerned with the influences of the celestial bodies in the sublunar sphere. Thus explanations of a sort are provided for the astrological effects of the planets, based upon their combined effects of heating, cooling, moistening, and drying. Ptolemy's astrological outlook was quite practical: he thought that astrology was like medicine, that is conjectural, because of the many variable factors to be taken into account: the race, country, and upbringing of a person affects an individual's personality as much if not more than the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the precise moment of their birth, so Ptolemy saw astrology as something to be used in life but in no way relied on entirely." JUVENAL. PERSIUS.

Satyrae.
Venice; in aedibus haeredum Aldi, et Andreae Soceri, 1535. 8vo. ff. 78. Italic letter. Aldine anchor device on t-p, bookplate of T. Kimball Brooker on pastedown. A fine copy in early 19th C English straight-grained olive morocco, triple-filleted in gilt, gilt Aldine dolphin to centre of each board, spine gilt in compartments, aeg. Third Aldine edition of Juvenal's and Persius' satires, which "follows sometimes one, and sometimes the other, text of the previous editions" (Dibdin). The book contains the famous sixteen satires written by Juvenal, and six by Persius. Juvenal being the greatest of Roman satirical poets, it is no surprise that Aldus quickly included his work among his beautifully printed pocket series publications. Little is known about Juvenal's life. His satires were first published between AD c110 and 127 and are characterised by a satirical and ironical humour directed against the vices of Roman society of the time. The third satire is perhaps the best, containing a wonderfully vivid description of Rome (which inspired Dr Johnson's 'London'), while the sixth, a harsh denunciation of women's vices, is the longest and most virulent. In his six satires, Flaccus Aulus Persius (AD 34-62) displays his stern Stoic morality in a mixture of styles and rather obscure language. A harsh criticism of the poets at the court of Nero is the subject of the first. The others, which are more homilies that satires, deal with topics such as the abuse of prayer (not for obtaining material goods), the damage caused by vice, and the greatness of Cornutus (Persius' Stoic teacher). The fine Aldine type makes the (re)reading of this edition a real pleasure. According to a pencil note on the fly, the Fortescue copy sold at Christie's in 1971. BM STC It. 364. Renouard 113:1 "pas commune". Adams J777. Brunet III 630. Graesse III 519 "édition très correcte et rare". Dibdin II p. 150-151 "It is not common".L800

Ptolemy, Claudius; Michaele Villanovano (Michael Servetus)

Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini Geographicae Enarrationis Libri Octo Ex Bilibaldi Pirckeymheri Tralatione, Sed Ad Graeca & Prisca Exemplaria a Michaele Villanovano (Serveto) Iam Primum Recogniti. Adjecta Insuper Ab Eodem Scholia Quibus Exoleta Urbium Nomina
Melchioris et Gasparis Trechsel, 1535. 4to bound in early blind-tooled, panelled calf over boards, small gilt devices to panels, nine compartments at the spine with a gilt fleur-de-lis in each. Clasp-mounts present, but clasps gone. 50 woodcut engraved maps, all double-aged save for the single-paged map of Lotharingia. (Some skillful, professional repairs and remargining throughout; cracking and rubbing to the leather). A celebrated and notorious edition of Ptolemy, the first edited by Michael Servetus. His description of the barren soil of Palestine in this volume, as opposed to the popular conception of it being a land of milk and honey, was one of the charges that led to him being burned at the stake in 1553, though the statement was not original to Servetus; he copied it from the 1525 edition of his predecessor, Pirckeymher. Copies of the present edition were immolated along with their editor, by order of Calvin, making surviving copies rare. The woodcut ornaments and borders are thought to be the work of Hans Holbein and Urs Graf. A beautiful example of this rare and significant edition of Ptolemy. Harrisse 210. Sabin 66483. Phillips 364.

'Ptolemy . regards the Tetrabilblos as the natural complement to the Almagest: as the latter enables one to predict the positions of the heavenly bodies, so the former expounds the theory of their influences on terrestrial things. The introductory chapters are devoted to a defense of astrology against chrages that it cannot achieve what it claims and that even if it can, it is useless . From the obvious terrestrial physical effects of the sun and moon, he infers that all heavenly bodies must produce physical effects. By careful observation of the terrestrial manifestations accompanying the various recurring combinations of celestial bodies, he believes it possible to erect a system which, although not mathematically certain, will enable one to make useful predictions. Book I explains the technical concepts of astrology, book II deals with influences on the earth in general ('astrological geography' and weather predictions), and book III and IV with influences on human life.' [DSB]"Ptolemy's treatise on astrology, the Tetrabiblos, was the most popular astrological work of antiquity and also enjoyed great influence in the Islamic world and the medieval Latin West. Ptolemy was concerned to defend astrology by defining its limits, compiling astronomical data that he believed was reliable and dismissing practices (such as considering the numerological significance of names) that he believed to be without sound basis.Much of the content of the Tetrabiblos may well have been collected from earlier sources; Ptolemy's achievement was to order his material in a systematic way, showing how the subject could, in his view, be rationalized. It is, indeed, presented as the second part of the study of astronomy of which the Almagest was the first, concerned with the influence

Cm. 15,5, pp. 361 (47).
