BRENTIUS (BRENZ), Johan.

Three interesting sermons by one of the leading protestant theologians of the 16th century Nürnberg, Künigund Hergotin 1533. 8vo. Later vellum. (40) lvs. Rare fourth edition of these three sermons by the reformed theologian and follower of Luther, Johan Brenz(en) or Brentius (1499-1570), one of the leading protestant theologians of his time. He found protection with Ulrich Duke of Würtemberg and later with his successor Duke Christoph. At their wish he composed the so-called 'Confessio Wütemburgica' (ed. 1552: Confessio Virtembergiae), was present at the Council of Trente, and reformed, together with other scholars, the University of Tübingen. His collected works were printed in eight volumes in Tübingen, 1576-1590 and Amsterdam, 1666. The first edition of these sermons appeared in 1529 in Augsburg, printed by Heinrich Steiner, the second: Nürnberg, Friedrich Peypus, 1532, the third: Wittemberg, Hans Lufft, 1532. Further editions of these apparently popular sermons were printed in Nürnberg (1549, 1550 and 1555), Leipzig (1548), and Frankfurt a/d Oder (1562).Contents:Fol. 1r: title on which the author is indicated as "Johan Brentius zu Schebischen Hall" (verso: blank).f. 2r-18r: Der erst Sermon von bereytung zu dem Sterben..f. 18r-31r: Der ander Sermon von Maria und Martha, hellt inn, wie man Got rechtschaffen dienen sol, Evangelion Luce X..f. 31v-39v:Der drit Sermon von dem klaffen und nachreden, uber die wort Luce. Martyr, Peter:

...DE REBUS OCEANICIS & ORBE NOVO DECADES TRES: QUIBUS QUICQUID DEINVENTIS NUPER TERRIS TRADITUM, NOVARUM RERUM CUPIDUM LECTOREM RETINEREPOSSIT, COPIOSE, FIDELITER, ERUDITEQUE DOCETUR. EIUSDEM PRAETEREALEGATIONIS BABYLONICAE LIBRI TRES....
Basel: Joannes Bebelius, 1533. [12],92 leaves. Folio. Early limp vellum, author and title in manuscript on spine. Early institutional ownership manuscript annotation on titlepage. Titlepage slightly soiled. Internally fresh and clean, except for occasional light dampstaining at foredge. A near fine copy. This esteemed early Americanum contains Martyr's initial three Decades, first published in 1516, supplemented in this edition by an abridgement of the fourth Decade. Martyr, a native of Italy, served the Spanish court in numerous capacities: soldier, priest, courtier, chaplain, teacher, historian, and ambassador. "In 1520 he became secretary to the Council of the Indies and later was appointed by emperor Charles V as the first official chronicler of the Indies. Although Martyr never set foot in the New World, he used his privileged position as a courtier to gather a great wealth of information from documents and through personal interviews. Following the model of the Latin historian Titus Livius, the Decades are volumes written in Latin divided into ten books each. They cover all aspects of the New World - the geography, the natural world...the natives, and all major events after the discovery" - Delgado-Gomez. Based on first- hand information the author was able to access through his position on the Council of the Indies, the Decades include accounts of the discoveries of Columbus, Vespucci, Cabot, and Cortés. In addition, there is information concerning the conquest of Mexico and details regarding Spanish settlements in the New World including Florida, Cuba, Hispaniola, and the Caribbean. Included in this edition, as in the 1516 printing, is Martyr's account of his embassy to Egypt in 1501 on behalf of King Ferdinand. A near fine copy of this fundamental text by the first Spanish historian of the New World. HARRISSE BAV 176. CHURCH 65. SABIN 1557. MEDINA (BHA) 92. MAGGS BIBLIOTHECA AMERICANA VII:4923. BELL A213. EUSEBIUS OF CAESAREA.

Fine edition of Eusebius's Historia Ecclesiastica in the first French translation in a beautiful contemporary binding Antwerp, Martin l'Empereur (Martin Keyser), 17 April 1533. 8vo. Contemporary calf with beautiful acorn panels, surrounded by an elaborate blind tooled border on both sides; spine with four raised bands; rests of ties. Printed in De Keyser's Small Pica Bastarda, probably cut by De Keyser himself. Title in woodcut border of four pieces, the lower one with the coat of arms (printer's device with his initials 'M. K.') of Martin Keyser; numerous woodcut initials. (12), 160, 157-293 leaves, pp. 295-299 (300). Very rare first and only Antwerp edition of the first French translation by Claude de Seyssel of the famous History of the Church by Eusebius of Caesarea, writing in the 4th century. Seyssel's translation was published twice before in Paris: an undated edition by D. Gauterot and an edition in 1532 by G. Tory, which edition is probably re-printed here by De Keyser. This is the most important history of the early Church being an excellent synthesis of the works of all significant early Christian and secular historians and eyewitness accounts of the events during the first three centuries of our era. Eusebius's narrative is linear, tracking the growth of the Church from Pentecost, A.D. 32 through stages of vicious persecution until the Emperor Constantine's sanctioning of Christianity as the Roman Empire's official religion. He tells us how the Church and the Canon of Scripture came to be. Every major Church figure, controversy and event of significance is recorded in accurate detail. Every form of heresy that threatened the Church's existence is reported thoroughly, yet concisely. Doing so Eusebius draws upon all available secondary sources during his time, including Josephus, Philo, Clement and the documents that later formed the Canon of Scripture. This synthesis of the ancient sources in itself is extremely valuable, making his history the primary source for our knowledge of the four first centuries A.D.The beautiful acorn panels on the covers of the binding belong to a group of at least 30 similar panels most of them produced in the Southern Netherlands, especially at Antwerp. Very good copy of this rare edition. - Dated ownership's entries on the back of the front cover: 1555: H. Spanofsky; 1563: Gotf. Beguaet Hoffnung; Christ. Tomigher (?) Jun. (?). NK 884; Vervliet, Printing types, B5: illustr. 137 from our edition! not in the BN at Paris; cf. Speeckaert, Quatre siècles de reliure, p.45.

EUCLIDES.

Elementa Geometriae
[:in Greek]. Woodcut printer's device on title & verso of final leaf, first page of text with a woodcut decorative border, & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. 6 p.l., 268; 115, [1] pp. Folio, 18th cent. mottled calf (upper blank margin of title -- 2.7 cm -- renewed & title carefully backed at an early date), double gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Basel: J. Herwagen, 1533. Editio princeps in Greek of Euclid's Elements, one of the great books in the history of the exact sciences. This is also the first Euclid to have the diagrams inset in the text. The Greek text was edited by Simon Grynaeus, professor of Greek at Basel University. Grynaeus used two manuscripts -- one sent by Lazarus Bayfius from Venice and the other supplied by John Claymond, president of Magdalen and later of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The Elements occupy 268 pages, followed by 115 pages containing the four books of the commentary of Proclus on the first book of the Elements. This commentary "is of considerable value for the study of ancient Greek geometry because of the historical information which it contains, derived from the lost works of Eudemos...and Geminos."Sarton, I, p. 403. Grynaeus dedicated this edition to Cuthbert Tunstall, Bishop of Durham and the author of the first English arithmetic. A fine crisp copy. Thomas-Stanford 7.

EUCLID .

[GREEK:] ELEMENTA GEOMETRIAE. BASLE: JOHANN HERWAGEN, 1533.
EDITIO PRINCEPS. Folio. [vi], 268, 115 pp. With woodcut device on title and colophon, decorated woodcut border to first page of text and numerous woodcut diagrams. Contemporary English calf, neatly rebacked, remains of ties, later endpapers. A very good copy. Editio princeps of Euclid's Elements and of the important commentary by Proclus on the first book. The first printing of Euclid in 1482 was a Latin translation from an Arabic manuscript, but the original Greek text did not appear for a further half-century. The Greek text was edited by Simon Grynaeus, a German Protestant theologian and philologist. This edition is also important for the innovation of geometrical diagrams within the text, rather than in the margins as had been the case with the earlier printed editions. The commentary by the Neoplatonist mathematician and philosopher Proclus on the first book of the Elements is the earliest extant criticism of Euclid's fifth postulate on the existence of parallel lines, the study of which led, after a further fifteen hundred years of effort, to the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry by Gauss, Bolyai and Lobachevsky. It is also the first printing of the earliest work on the philosophy of mathematics. "Because of his interest in the principles underlying mathematical thought and their relation to ultimate philosophical principles, Proclus' commentary is a notable - and also the earliest - contribution to the philosophy of mathematics. Its numerous references to the views of Euclid's predecessors and successors, many of them otherwise unknown to us, render it an invaluable source for the history of science" (DSB).

(Bd. 1, S. 153. Abb. in Bd. II, Nr. 923-925. S. a. Oldenbourg / Scheufelein L 171). Jahrhunderts (Aurelius Victor, Amm. CAPELLA, G.

Sm.8vo. Contemporary vellum wrappers. 96 lvs. SERVILIUS, J. Geldro-Gallica Coniuratio in totius Belgicae clarissimam Civitatem Antwerpiam, Duce Martino Rosheymio. Augsburg, Henricus Steyner, 1544. (44) lvs. Two interesting contemporary history works, bound together at the time in one volume, with autograph "Fletcher" at the top of both titles. Ad 1: Important contemporary account of the struggle for power between the Pope, the Italian princes and the German emperor between 1521 and 1530, by Galeazzo Capella (1487-1537), see description above. The book is nicely printed in a small Italic type, with charming woodcut initials of various styles. Ad 2: Exciting contemporary account of the rebellious war by Maarten van Rossum in Brabant and Gelre in the 1540's and his attempt to capture Antwerp by surprise. The humanist Jan Knaap, latin Servilius, also Knapius, was born at Weert in the County of Horn and lived for some time at Antwerp where he was much respected for his erudition. He mainly wrote Latin school books but occasionally, swept by the circumstances or urged by his friends, he turned his literary talents to public or political events. STIFEL, Michael.

Ein Rechen Büchlin vom EndChrist. Apocalypsis in Apocalypsim.
19 October 1533 at 8.00 AM .... the end of the world Wittemberg, (Georgen Rhaw, 1532). 8vo. Later half ivory paper, boards covered with marbled paper, spine with title label. Title-page in architectural woodcut frame with lion laying at the bottom, second title-page of the prayer printed in upper part of a full-page woodcut with a shield at the top lettered 'GR/KK', and a Crucifixion in the lower part, contemporary coloured by hand in green and red, woodcut initials, printed tables. 103 lvs. (Collation: A-M8, N8-1 (last (blank ?) missing). First and only edition of this curious numerological analysis of the date of Christ's return and chiliastic book on the end of the world based on certain sections of the Book of Daniel, by Michael Stifel.Michael Stifel (1487-1567) was an eccentric German mathematician. He discovered logarithms and invented an early form of logarithm tables decades before John Napier. He published his most important 'serious work', his Arithmetica integra in 1544. This work has helped the development of algebra, and he helped to shape modern mathematics. However his following ideas on the end of the world most likely overshadow the good he has done:Stifel entered the Augustinian monastery and became a catholic priest in 1511. Soon after this, Stifel began questioning the Catholic Church and he was forced to leave the monastery in 1522. He decided to go to Wittenberg and became friends with Martin Luther, and lived in his house for a time. In 1528 Luther decided to give Stifel a parish in Lochau, which is now Annaberg.Already in Lochau he was engaged in mathematical research, especially with the so-called 'Wortrechnung' (reckoning with figures, letters and words). With the help of the 'Wortrechnung' it was believed to get secret information out of the Bible. In the present work Stifel attempted to use the Bible to predict the apocalypse. While in Lochau, Stifel announced to everyone that the world was going to end on October 19, 1533 at exactly 8:00 AM. Stifel performed a series of calculations in which he changed the letters to their successive triangular numbers. Stifel told the people of Lochau of his findings on New Year's Eve of 1522. This announcement had amazing repercussions. The sleepy town of Lochau believed Stifel. They all began living for the day and not worrying about what the future would bring. Lochau became a destination for pilgrims. Once they got to Lochau people began to prepare for the end of the world. Some people even took their own life instead of waiting. Some of the town's people burned their houses in an attempt to remove themselves from material objects and make it easier for to get to Heaven. Finally, the last day came and Stifel began to prepare his followers for the end. Fortunately for everyone except Stifel the world did not end that day. At 8:30 AM the authorities took Stifel away and put him in protective custody, for his own protection. Crowds gathered outside his cell and chanted Stifel must die for many days after this. Martin Luther got Stifel out of this, but he had to promise not to make anymore prophecies. In later years he became minister again and in 1559 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Jena, where he died in 1567.Contents: f. A1r: Title.F. A1v-A2r: Contents.f. REGIOMONTANUS (Johann MÜLLER).

De Triangulis omnimodis libri quinque …
Accesserunt huc in calce pleraque D. Nicolai Cusani de Quadratura circuli. Nuremberg: Johann Petri,1533 Folio (297 × 194 mm) in two parts. Modern half vellum, marbled boards. Woodcut diagram on main title, numerous woodcut diagrams in text, with blank R6, lacks blank l4. The Robert Honeyman copy, with his bookplate (his sale part IV, Sotheby's New York, 20 May 1981, lot 3299). F1 and F4 with marginal repairs, some staining at beginning and end, light browning to text. First Edition of the first printed systematic work on trigonometry. De triangulis was Regiomontanus's most important scientific contribution. Completed in 1464, De triangulis remained in manuscript for nearly seventy years before being published in this edition, edited by J. Schner (1477–1547). It contains the earliest statement of the cosine law for spherical triangles, stating the proportionality of the sides of a plane triangle to the sines of the opposite angle. This fundamental proposition of spherical trigonometry appears as theorem 2 in book V of the treatise. In the second part, Regiomontanus proves the errors of Nicolaus de Cusa's theory of squaring the circle. When, in the middle of the fifteenth century [Georg] Peurbach and his pupil Regiomontanus, Professors of Mathematics at Vienna University, prepared the first modern sine tables, they kept the 360° division of the circle used by the Greeks but, in order to avoid awkward fractions, they divided the diameter much more minutely, into 20,000 parts… These tables, being printed in folio-size books, were essentially works for the scholar's desk and astronomer's observatory (D.W. Waters, The Art of Navigation in England in Elizabethan and Early Stuart Times, p. 353). In 1594, Thomas Blundeville would reprint the tables, together with explanations for their use, and thus give Englishmen the first complete canon of trigonometrical functions printed in England. The work of Regiomontanus and Peurbach therefore constitutes one of the monumental breakthroughs in the practice of navigation. Adams R-280; BM/STC German, p. 631; Norman 1556; Stillwell Science 218.

They took up banking and politics, representing the mercantile class against the patrician de! Medici. Lorenzo married the writer!s sister Maria in 1572.#11; Filippo Corsini , (5th January 1538 - 24th March 1601), was an immensely rich merchant in London. His monument, in the family chapel of S. Spirito, was transferred in the 19th century from S. Gaggio, just outside Florence. His brother Bartolommeo , (8th March 1545 - 22nd January 1613), became a senator in 1601 but continued in commerce. He built or rebuilt nearly all the family properties, including the great palace in the Borgo S. Croce.#11;The Corsini were first ennobled in Lorenzo!s son Filippo, (1578-1636), made Marquis of Sismano (1629) by Urban VIII. They joined with the Medici in founding a Florentine bank in Rome, and later became Princes, with great palaces on the Lungarno and in Rome.#11;The Corsini appear from time to time in the records of the High Court of Admiralty in London, in commercial suits. !Baptist Cavalcante and partners, and Philip Corsini of Florence!, sued for money in the hands of Richard Barnes, John Stone and Thomas Tenett, belonging to Damian Doffe of Florence (Public Record Office, HCA 3/13 (1567-1569), folios 117d and later).#11; Alumstone , which makes the dye penetrate and fixes it in the wool, was mined in Tuscany. Sixtus V rid the Papal States of brigands, reorganised the finances and administration, re-housed the Vatican library, and gave Rome the appearance it maintained down to the 19th century by completing the dome of St. Peter!s and other great works.#11; Henri, 3rd Duc de Guise, (1550-1588), founded the !Holy League! in 1576. He renewed the war against the Huguenots in March 1585, when the king, Henri III, refused Spanish help against his own subjects. By 1588 the League was demanding that the king show proof of his Catholic principles or be deposed, and the Duke was murdered by Henri III!s assasssins on December 25th.
