Kl.-4to. Mit breiter, dekorativer Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre von Georg Lemberger. [15] Bl. (ohne das letzte leere). Pergamentband unter Verwendung eines Antiphonarblattes. Wittenberg, [Hans Lufft], 1531. Erstdruck der ersten Ausgabe. Nachdem Herzog Georg von Sachsen ein Exemplar von Luthers "Warnunge an seine lieben Deudschen" sowie dessen "Auf das Vermeint Keiserlich Edict" vom selben Jahr erhalten hatte, beklagte er sich bei Kurfürst Johann Friedrich. Da er von diesem keine zufriedenstellende Antwort erhielt, schrieb er mit "Widder des Luthers warnung an die Deutschen" selbst eine Schmähschrift gegen den Reformator. Luther erhielt noch während der Drucklegung Kenntnis davon und verfasste als Replik umgehend eine seiner leidenschaftlichsten Polemiken. - Ausssteg minimal gebräunt. When Duke Georg of Saxony received copies of Luther's "Warnunge an seine lieben Deudschen" and commentary "Auf das Vermeint Keiserlich Edict", he wrote to Elector John Frederick to complain. Receiving no satisfactory answer, he wrote a booklet himself against Luther's work. Schön gedruckte Ausgabe der frühen juristischen Werkzusammenstellung, im Jahr der Erstveröffentlichung von Alciatos berühmtem Emblembuch, auf dem der Nachruhm des Verfassers gründet. Die Sammlung von sieben Schriften ermöglichte erstmals zu Alciatos Lebzeiten einen Überblick über seine juristischen Vorstellungen. - Die hübschen Kinderinitialen im Stile Hans Holbeins; die hübsche Bordüre auf Bl. A1r signiert von Jakob Faber. Der lange in Basel tätige Formschneider wirkte als "jahrelanger Metallschneider eines guten Drittels des von Hans Holbein d. J. gezeichneten Buchschmucks, ist also mit einer der anerkannt besten Leistungen der deutschen Kunst eng verbunden" (Thieme/Becker XI, 150). Papierbedingt in den Rändern etwas gebräunt; der Titel gelockert und mit kl. Papierdurchbruch. Einband stärker berieben und an den Deckeln angedunkelt. Martin Bucer Briefwechsel Correspondance: Band V (September 1530-mai 1531)

Unlike most theologians of his age, martin Bucer proved to be farsighted with respect to European affairs: in addition to his contacts with Alsace and Germany he established relations with almost every Europan country. It was his ecumenical attitude that always led him to mediate between the parties in the religious battles of his time. His deep commitment to the goal of reaching agreement can be traced in all his activities , works and letters. Since the first editor, Jean Rott(Strasbourg)died in 1998 , Bucer's correspondence has been edited in Erlangen. This academic edition of source material provides future research with abroad basis for significant aspects of reformation history about which very little is known. Volume V covers the period from September 1530 to May 1531. it therefore3 mainly contains information about Bucer's diplomatic journey after the Augsburg Diet, his correspondence with the valdesian synod of Merindol, his attempts to mediate between Luther and Zwingli with the help of his knokordienschrift and to integrate the Swiss party in the schmalcaldic confederation. The second part with large bust of Charles V on the title-page; a double-p. folded woodcut of the siege of Vienna and 28 other (large) woodcuts in the text. Contemp. richly blindstamped panelled calf over wood; bevelled sides; two brass clasps. Folio.-First and only edition of this chronicle.-Leaf 59 and the last unnumb. leaf of the second part replaced by very good matching photogr. facsimiles. Very fine copy, almost without spotting. First + 50 leaves narrow waterstain in blank outermargin. Very carefully restored original binding; rebacked with use of original backstrip; new clasps and leather of clasps renewed; new endpapers. Von Sebastian Münster (1489-1552) übersetzte und herausgegeben zweisprachige Grammatica des Rabbi Moses Kimchi. Diese bereits um 1525 von Jacob Cepornius begonnene Bearbeitung von Kimchis Grammatik kam Sebastian Münsters Bestrebungen entgegen, den Christen eine gute hebräische Grammatik zu geben. In seiner Einleitung weist Münster auf die Schwierigkeiten christlicher Hebraisten hin, die sich von deutschen Juden in die hebräische Sprache einführen liessen. - Der hebräische Text ist separat gedruckt. In der Uebersetzung sind die Scholien von Elia Levita eingeflochten, im hebräischen Teil ist der auf beiden Titelblättern angezeigte Kommentar Levitas nicht vorhanden. - Alter Bibliotheksstempel auf beiden Titelblättern. Mil Quatre vingtz et quatre demandes, avec les Solutions & Responses a tous propoz, oeuvre curieux et moult recreatif, selon le saige Sidrach.
Paris Galliot du Pré 1531 In-12 de (32)-271-(1) ff., maroquin rouge, dos à cinq nerfs, dentelle intérieure, double filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées (Pagnant). Belle impression en lettres rondes de Pierre Vidoue pour Galliot du Pré. L'ouvrage, également intitulé Livre de la fontaine de toutes les sciences, est écrit en prose française dans la deuxième moitié du XIIIe siècle par un laïc anonyme ; selon une hypothèse de Charles Langlois l'auteur serait « un franc » sans doute un clerc de l'Orient latin. Le nom de Sidrac fait référence au Shadrach du livre de Daniel, qui refuse comme Sidrac, de se prosterner devant les idoles (Benoît Beyer de Ryke, Les encyclopédies médiévales, un état de la question). Sous une forme dialoguée entre le philosophe chrétien Sidrac et le roi Boctus de Bactriane, il y est traité de religion, éthique, médecine, droit, politique (gouvernement des princes) et pour la première fois d'astrologie. Le texte français, connu par 63 manuscrits au moins, a été imprimé pour la première fois en 1486 (Paris, Antoine Vérard), puis réimprimé onze fois entre 1486 et 1533 et le nombre de questions abordées varie selon les éditions. Ce livre médiéval eut un très grand succès jusqu’à la Renaissance (il figurait dans toutes les bibliothèques princières : rois de France, ducs de Bourgogne, Sforza, Gonzague de Mantoue, ducs de Ferrare) et fut traduit très vite dans de nombreuses langues (oc, italien, catalan, flamand, anglais, danois etc.) Première impression de ce texte en lettres rondes, d'après Brunet ; elle comprend de nombreuses et belles lettrines à fond criblé. Le titre est imprimé en rouge et noir. L'ouvrage est illustré de quatre figures sur bois, l'une sur le titre, l'une à la fin de la table, une troisième au commencement du texte et la dernière constituant la marque de l'imprimeur au verso du dernier feuillet. Mustergültige Typographie. - Der römische Drucker Antonio Blado wirkte zwischen 1515 und 1567; seine Typen sind in den 20er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts dem englischen Typographen Stanley Morison Anregung für dessen "Blado-Schrift". - Fadengeheftetes, unbeschnittenes nicht gebundenes Exemplar. The work has been, incorrectly, attributed to Johannes Ebser, Bishop of Chiemsee. Berthold Pürstinger (1465-1543), bishop of Chiemsee, was "often employed in important matters by Archbishop Leonard (d. 1519) and by his successor, Mathäus Lang (d. 1519). . Lang's energetic reformatory measures accorded with Berthold's deepest wishes, and he seems to have both inspired them and given them expression. When Berthold was sent to suppress the Lutherans in Kitzbühel he accomplished little, his retiring nature being unfitted for decisive action. . His Onus ecclesiae had appeared in 1524 and Archbishop Lang was anxious that Berthold would continue his literary work. . "Bethold's writings have far more interest than the deeds of his active and public life; and they reveal the man with no less clearness. The Onus ecclesiae was published anonymously (Landshut, 1524, Cologne, 1531, 2d ed. revised, Augsburg, 1531), but there is no doubt about his authorship. As early as 1548 it appears in a Venetian index of heretical books and in 1550 in the Louvain index. . Berthold's purpose is to call to repentance and reform; for this end he depicts in dark colors the 'burden' which lies on the entire Church--a twofold weight of guilt and impending punishment, in which all are involved, but especially Rome and the clergy. The Turks, who were then threatening eastern Europe, are an instrument of the merited doom; and the 'reformation' by which the Church was already divided forebodes more to come. . Joachim of Fiore, the revelations of St. Bridget, and other productions of the contemporary medieval prophetism furnished material, with which personal observations and experience are interwoven, so that the whole presents a well-ordered and illuminating picture of conditions in South Germany and the archdiocese of Salzburg. ." Très rare, nous n'avons pu découvrir qu'un seul exemplaire dans le catalogue Hollis de l'université d'Harvard. Manque bien sûr à la BN de France ainsi qu'à la plupart des catalogues étrangers. L'exemplaire d'Harvard ne contient pas les 46 pages d'un texte en grec (que contient notre exemplaire) censé faire suite à cette édition ainsi que l'indique le colophon. §Absent à Brunet qui ne cite que l'édition traduite en français de 1587 à Paris, chez Michalon. §Pleine Basane marron, pastiche d'une reliure flammande du XVIème siècle, dos à 4 nerfs et semis d'étoiles à froid, les plats portent un losange central à partir duquel rayonnent une série d'encadrements. Coiffe de queue grignotée et nombreux travaux de vers sur les plats (parfois larges), trous de vers en coiffe de tête. Trous de vers et galeries sur les deux premiers feuillets en marge basse et coin, de peu de conséquence... §Procope de Césarée fut un historien grec de la première moitié du VIème siècle, il occupa à bysance différents postes importants, secrétaire de Bélisaire, préfet de bysance. Ses écrits marquent la transition entre la littérature grecque classique et la littérature grecque bysantine, et font entrer l'histoire dans une nouvelle vision. L'ouvrage rassemble les livres de guerres, guerre des goths, des vandales, des perses. De nombreux autres textes suivent les récits de guerre. (FOL 19-57) Erste lateinische Ausgabe.- Berthold Pirstinger (Pürstinger, 1465 - 1543), Bischof von Chiemsee, hatte einen klaren Blick für die Ungebildetheit und Verderbtheit des damaligen Klerus und gilt als früher Vertreter der katholischen Reform. Seine maßvolle Haltung gegenüber den Protestanten und aufständischen Bauern fand jedoch nicht genügend Anerkennung. 1526 trat er vom Bischofsamt zurück, um weiter schriftstellerisch zu wirken. Seine "Tewtsche Theologey" (München 1528) gilt als erste in deutscher Sprache verfasste Dogmatik, die in vielem bereits auf die Beschlüsse des Tridentinums vorausweist. Der Salzburger Erzbischofs Kardinal Matthäus Lang v. Wellenburg, der wünschte, dass das Werk auch außerhalb Deutschlands gelesen werde, veranlasste Pirstinger, das Werk selbst ins Lateinische zu übersetzen. Der Text ist unterzeichnet mit Saalfelden im Pinzgau ("in opido Salfelden vallis Pinzgeu"), wohin sich Berthold zurückgezogen hatte und wo er seinen Reformgeist durch die Gründung einer auch für Laien offenstehende Priesterbruderschaft sowie eines Spitals bewährte.- Die Titelbordüre zeigt in der Kopf- und Fußleiste Gottvater und Maria mit dem Kinde, in den Ecken die Symbole der vier Evangelisten, in den Randleisten die Apostel Petrus und Paulus, den hl. Augustinus und den hl. Apart from the first section describing ancient history, which is as usual based on legends, the history is according to the Bibliotheca Belgica of considerable importance as it contains numerous official documents. It also contains several minute descriptions of festivities and ceremonies which better than any modern study gives the reader an idea of the customs and morals of the period. The chronicle used to be ascribed to André de Smet and Antoine de Roovere. The name of De Smet is twice mentioned in the text, on folio CXL and CCLXXXII, but the Bibliotheca Belgica, after comparing several manuscripts of the chronicle, doubts the authorship of De Smet and rather thinks him to have been one of the owners of one of the manuscripts to which he added some contemporary observations. The Bibliotheca Belgica ascribes the main work to Roelant de Doppere, secretary of Gilles Baerdemakere, Bishop of Sarepta, and Antoine de Roovere, a Flemish rhetorician, born at Bruges around 1462. His Rhetoricale wercken were published at Antwerp in 1562. The author of the supplement on the life of the emperor Charles V has remained anonymous. In 1866 W.G. Brill published a manuscript belonging to the Count Van Limburg-Stirum at Ghent, containing a work of Antoine de Roovere, called Huwelijksplechtigheden van Karel van Bourgondië en Margaretha van York. This account is found in the Cronike van Vlaenderen as well. Of special interest are the numerous large woodcuts illustrating the chronicle. Partly they probably came from the large stock of the publisher, but partly they were no doubt especially made for the present work. Many are most elegantly and finely cut. Today the book has become rather scarce. Black and roman letter; title within elaborate pictorial woodcut border, (Not in McKerrow) contemporary (?)monogram in blank, 16th C inscription to last leaf "Be it known unto all them/ Be it known that I Thomas/ Be it known unto all men that" with Latin above now mostly excised, another elsewhere. Slight age yellowing, a good, clean, well-margined copy in 19th C half calf over marbled boards. Rare edition of Whittington's guide to noun cases for the use of students, PRINTED BY THE FIRST PRINTER IN SOUTHWARK. Whittington published a number of grammars from 1510 onwards. His regular printer was Wynkyn de Worde, but during the years 1529-1531 he experimented with Peter Treveris, who was found to be so unsatisfactory that on returning to de Worde Whittington saw fit to include some disparaging verses about Treveris in his new grammars. The text presents all grammar concerning nouns on a systematic case by case basis, with very brief statements of each grammatical procedure in a large Roman font, followed by examples in very small Black letter. Written entirely in Latin, the book represents a daunting project for the schoolboy reader. Whittington (c.1480-C.1553) was an English grammarian and pupil of John Stanbridge. Although turning to translation later in his career, he was made famous by his publication of elementary Latin school books concentrating on a single grammatical aspect, which were sold widely and cheaply and frequently republished, nevertheless, their survival rate, especially in good condition, has been very low. A staunch traditionalist, or 'Trojan', favouring the rote learning of grammar and syntax prior to any attempts at reading, Whittington famously came to blows with William Lily, headmaster of St Paul's, who favoured a 'Greek' approach to the Classics, promoting the learning of grammar through reading texts, resulting in the almost simultaneous publication of two very disparate 'Vulgariae'. Unfortunately for Whittington, Lily's approach carried the day. To Whittington can be attributed the coining of the maxim 'a man for all seasons', loosely following Erasmus' 'omnium horarum.' The first Dutch edition appeared also in Antwerp with Willem Vorsterman and Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten on 15 November 1531 under the title Ordinantien ende statuten ... om te verdriven de Lutheraensche ende andere gereprobeerde secten ... (FOL 19-57) Erste lateinische Ausgabe.- Berthold Pirstinger (Pürstinger, 1465 - 1543), Bischof von Chiemsee, hatte einen klaren Blick für die Ungebildetheit und Verderbtheit des damaligen Klerus und gilt als früher Vertreter der katholischen Reform. Seine maßvolle Haltung gegenüber den Protestanten und aufständischen Bauern fand jedoch nicht genügend Anerkennung. 1526 trat er vom Bischofsamt zurück, um weiter schriftstellerisch zu wirken. Seine "Tewtsche Theologey" (München 1528) gilt als erste in deutscher Sprache verfasste Dogmatik, die in vielem bereits auf die Beschlüsse des Tridentinums vorausweist. Der Salzburger Erzbischofs Kardinal Matthäus Lang v. Wellenburg, der wünschte, dass das Werk auch außerhalb Deutschlands gelesen werde, veranlasste Pirstinger, das Werk selbst ins Lateinische zu übersetzen. Der Text ist unterzeichnet mit Saalfelden im Pinzgau ("in opido Salfelden vallis Pinzgeu"), wohin sich Berthold zurückgezogen hatte und wo er seinen Reformgeist durch die Gründung einer auch für Laien offenstehende Priesterbruderschaft sowie eines Spitals bewährte.- Die Titelbordüre zeigt in der Kopf- und Fußleiste Gottvater und Maria mit dem Kinde, in den Ecken die Symbole der vier Evangelisten, in den Randleisten die Apostel Petrus und Paulus, den hl. Augustinus und den hl. Fine sammelband with three of Steiner's famous editions, all in their first printing and of special value due to their splendid woodcuts by Weiditz, Burgkmair, and Breu. - Johann Neuber's translation of Cicero's "Officia" into German was commissioned by Johann von Schwarzenberg, while the vernacular versions of Herodianus and Justinus were commissioned by Steiner himself. These latter two works are the first respective German editions ever. Hans Weiditz's more than 100 illustrations in Cicero's "Officia" are considered his principal work and - together with the series by Burgkmair and Breu count among the finest works of German Renaissance book illustration. - Interior only insignificantly fingerstained; edges and corners with traces of professional restoration. While the "Officia" apparently remained unread, the following two works contain extensive German marginalia by a contemporary hand. - Exceptionally well preserved copies of these three Renaissance woodcut works in their first binding. VERY HANDSOME ELABORATELY GILT LATE 18TH CENTURY OLIVE MOROCCO BINDING BY ROGER PAYNE covers with outer border featuring single fillet enclosing alternating floral sprig and star tools center panel with stippled cornerpieces and with various delicate gilt flowers circlets sunbursts etc. raised bands spine in six compartments (lettered in second and fifth the other compartments with massed small tools) BEAUTIFUL REMARKABLY ANIMATED OLIVE GREEN MOROCCO DOUBLURES tooled similarly to boards but with wider borders with a narrower center panel featuring festoons and floral tools and with densely gilt stippled square cornerpieces in both the borders and central panel all edges gilt green headbands (as was characteristic of Payne bindings). In a fine fleece-lined scarlet straight-grain morocco pull-off Solander box with raised bands and titling in gilt on spine. Woodcut title page border with Sessa’s cat and mouse device historiated initial. Ruled in red throughout. Front endpaper with engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Brooke F. S. A. of Armitage Bridge; morocco monogram bookplate of “V G H”; and early 20th century bookplate of Lucius Wilmerding verso with book label of Abel E. Berland. Front flyleaf with notes in an old hand recording among other things that our volume was sold as lot 2566 in 1836 as part of the auctions dispersing the collection of Richard Heber. Covers a little spotted and with slight loss of gilt in places but the binding otherwise in extremely desirable condition the joints virtually unworn and the doublures clean and with very bright gilt. Front free endpaper detached (but present) occasional minor foxing and isolated trivial discoloration internally but the text quite fresh and bright. A FINE EXAMPLE. Graesse VI, 1, 201; Brunet V, 4 (“a fine and scarce edition”); STC Italian, p. 595. In 1475 when the young Giovanni Sabadino degli Arienti (d. 1506) was secretary to Count Andrea de Bentivoglio he travelled with his employer to the fashionable baths of La Poretta in the territory of Bologna. To entertain his master and other socialites Sabadino composed these tales which take their name from the bathing establishment and which are very often of a lascivious nature. First printed in Bologna in 1483 these tales almost always number 60 (despite the title which promises 70); our 1531 edition seems to be unique in containing 62 tales. There are several tools here that have appeared on other bindings securely attributed to Roger Payne. The floral tool used as the termination of the oblique scalloped collar of the large central lozenge on the cover of the 1590 Tasso (see Davenport’s Plate 5) is the same as one of the two repeating tools along the border of our doublure’s central panel; also the five-lobed flower appearing four times in each of the spine compartments of E. Y. Ides’ “Travels” of 1706 (Plate 14) is the same as the featured tool used in the cover borders on our binding. Finally in Davenport’s Plate 15 which shows Guillaume Postel’s “La Loy Salique” of 1780--the binding that is by far the closest to ours in overall design--we can find three common tools: the squat five-pointed flower with four thin tendrils terminating in dots is located both at the outer corners of the Postel covers and in the same place in the central panel of our covers; a “V”-shaped sprig is used as the main unifying tool in the doublure border of both bindings; and the second floral tool in the border of our doublure’s central panel is identical to the tool used in the same way on the cover frame of the Postel volume. The provenance here glistens with distinction. To touch on only two of the celebrated owners we can say that Richard Heber (1773-1833) was one of the most famous bibliophiles in history and de Ricci says that “it is doubtful whether any private individual ever owned so large a library” as Heber’s. At his death his collection totaled between 200000 and 300000 volumes and it filled more than six houses in England and on the continent. Although he bought with avidity and sometimes in large quantities Heber was nevertheless a discriminating collector in terms of condition. His collection especially strong in continental and English literature and history took 16 sales to disperse and the disappointing prices fetched at the Heber auctions testified to the fact that he was the last great collector of the Dibdinian age. Wilmerding (1879-1949) a successful banker was known equally for his outstanding book collection and his philanthropic work on behalf of various organizations including the New York Public Library of which he was the director. His library contained a substantial group of bindings chosen with exacting discrimination for their historic interest their beauty and their consistently fine condition. [Bookseller: Phillip J. Cologne Quentell 1531. Rare first edition of this work of theology and canon law on the "canonical hours," the regular sequence of prayers enjoined upon ordained ecclesiastics of varying ranks and members of monastic orders throughout the day, by the future Archbishop of Vienna, Friedrich Nausea (b. Grau, 1480-1552). A rare Cologne imprint, with a single copy recorded in OCLC (Pitts Theology Library, Emory.) The work is in two parts: the first traces the origin of individual prayers to discrete episodes in the life of Christ as revealed by the Gospels and foretold in the Old Testament; the second book is devoted entirely to what might be called the anatomy of the Mass. Nausea is a staunch upholder of the Church?s right to legislate the time, sequence and content of devotion against the private acts of spontaneous worship advocated by Lutheran reformers, though later in his career he would prove himself something of a liberal in working for the reunion of Catholics and Lutherans, a proponent of clerical marriage and lay handling of the communion cup, etc. Nausea was born in Franconia, educated at Bamberg and Nuremberg, and received degrees in canon law and divinity from Siena. He attended most of the Diets the Church organized in response to the Reformation (Nuremberg, Ratisbon, Ofen and Trent, where he died).
