Fu polemico verso l'ortodossia greca e i suoi scritti sono fondamentali per la storia delle eresie cristiane e le controversie teologiche medioevali. Prima versione latina dal greco, fatta da Philippus Saulum, dei dotti estesi commenti di Euthymius al testo dei 150 salmi di David. Splendida impressione di Verona del primo cinquecento, assai rara. I Sabio furono chiamati a Verona dal vescovo Giberti, che fornì loro il materiale tipografico; l'indirizzo della loro bottega era "appresso il Domo". Venice: Giovanni Tacuino, 1530. First edition, first issue of this rare alchemical work, highly unusual for its early use of four-colour printing. !There is an augmented issue with four leaves inserted between the title leaf and A2 ! the first a blank, the others numbered 0, 00 and 1! (Mortimer).Pantheo was a Venetian priest who published, in 1518 the alchemical Ars transmutationis metallicae. !Portions of this were reproduced in the Voarchadumia in 1530, but [it] is quite a distinct work and is much enlarged. Pantheus wrote against spurious alchemy and he deals partly with the assay of gold, which is illustrated by drawings of rolling mills, furnaces of various sorts with the accompanying apparatus and a balance and weights, and partly with the chemical preparation of various substances which were made at Venice in his time and were used in the arts. He describes, for example, the manufacture of white lead and of an alloy for mirrors ! Pantheus was a priest of Venice, but seems nevertheless to have been devoted to chemical research. The word Voarchadumia ! barbarous, as it has been styled by some writers ! is compounded, according to the author himself, of a Chaldee word signifying gold, and of a Hebrew expression meaning !out of two rubies!, and he explains it all as equivalent to !gold of two perfect cementations!, that is, thoroughly refined! (Ferguson).!It seems probable that, after the publication of [the Ars transmutationis metallicae], someone called to the attention of its author or the papal court or the Venetian government the existence of a papal decretal and a decree of Venice against alchemists. For in 1530 Pantheus brought out with the same printer at Venice a book entitled Voarchadumia ! As [the] title suggests, he now professed to be writing not on alchemy but on Voarchadumia, an art distinct from alchemy. This Voarchadumia he represented as true wisdom, the very opposite of alchemy, a sort of !cabala of metals!, handed down from Tubal Cain through the Chaldeans and Indians ! The work opens with prefaces to the doge and to the papal legate. Yet he repeats most of his work of 1518 in the course of the Voarchadumia. The volume also includes woodcuts of alchemical furnaces and apparatus and a bird!s-eye view of Venice and its surroundings! (Thorndike, A history of magic and experimental science V, pp. 539!40).In the margin of f. 38r is printed a symbol which is strikingly similar to that used by John Dee in his Monas hieroglyphica. Dee owned and extensively annotated a copy of the Voarchadumia and it seems likely that his symbol, which first appears on the title of the Propaedeumata aphoristica in 1558 and then, most famously, in the Monas hieroglyphica of 1564, is derived from Pantheo!s. !For Dee it was a powerful symbol both of creation and of the unity of the sciences! (von 53, letztes Bl. vom Register fehlt, wahrscheinlich mit Kolophon), verziert mit zahlreichen Initialen, mehrere Blätter etwas gebräunt, leichter Wasserfleck am oberen Rand (im Registerteil auch im äusseren Rand), drei Wurmstiche im unteren Rand und im Text (kaum Textverlust), auf Innenseite des Vorderdeckels ein kleines herald. Exlibris 'F. Theremin. Pasteur' und Stempel 'Edouard de Montmollin', Halbpergament bis auf Mitte der Holzdeckeln, auf Bünden, Blindprägung teils abgenutzt, Beiband von ca. 100 Bl. ausgebunden, Resten von Kupferschliessen, alter hs. Titeletikette auf dem Pergament des Vorderdeckels. Sehr gutes Exemplar. Erstausgabe einer der historischen Arbeiten des Straßburger Reformators, nicht bloss eine Kompilation aus alten Kirchenhistoriker sondern auch durch Hedios umfangreiche Kommentare ein im reformatorischen Geiste geschriebenes eigenes Werk, die bald vielgelesene Volksbücher wurden . Wie den Euseb so übertrug Hedio frühere Weltchroniken ins Deutsche, versah dieselben mit Anmerkungen und führte sie bis auf seine Zeit fort, hauptsächlich mit dem apologetischen Bestreben, die Reformation geschichtlich zu rechtfertigen . Nicht mit Unrecht ist Hedio als erster protestantischer Kirchenhistoriker bezeichnet worden (RE VII, 517). Die große Kirchengeschichte des Straßburger Gelehrten ist der erste protestantische Versuch dieser Art. Den Beginn bilden Übersetzungen einzelner Abschnitte aus den Kirchenvätern; am wichtigsten sind Hedions Vorreden, durch welche er die praktischen Lehren aus dem mitgeteilten Stoff für die Gegenwart zieht. First edition of one of the historical works of the religious reformer from Strasbourg. It is not just a compilation from ancient church historians but also a personal work written by Caspar Hedio: his translations are accompanied by his extensive commentaries in the spirit of the reformation, getting very popular in his days. In this copy the last index leaf is missing, slight browning to some leaves, light waterstain in upper margin, the last few index leaves the outer margin with light waterstain as well, rubbed and duststained blindstamped vellum over spine and up to the middle of the wooden boards, in this copy a work of about 100 leaves was originally bound before the «Chronica», and has been bound out, remains of copper clasps. [10] 256 ff. A very fine copy, excellently preserved in original state with hinges tight and strong, the calf in beautiful condition, the textblocks clean, crisp and unpressed. This is also a large copy, of significantly greater dimensions than the Schreiber copy.. RARE FIRST EDITION IN FINE ANTIQUE CALF OF THE FIRST ESTIENNE FOLIO PRINTING OF PLAUTUS. This was a highly important edition of the comedies of Plautus which was instrumental in the forming of EstienneOs highly influential THESAURUS Oin which Estienne had virtually founded modern Latin lexicographyO (thus replacing the outdated work of Calepinus). Estienne had failed to persuade any suitable scholar to compile a new Latin dictionary and so prepared for this work by reading and making exhaustive notes on the whole of Terence and Plautus; these notes were then written out and put in alphabetical order to form the basis of the new work. The PLAUTUS appeared a year before the THESAURUS but it is not clear whether this edition had already been projected, or whether it was a by product of the dictionary. OPlautus, the great comic dramatist of Ancient Rome lived until about 184 B.C. according to Cicero. He may, in certain respects be regarded as completely original, viz. in his development of the lyrical element in his plays....These lyrical metres of Plautus are wonderfully varied, and the textual critic does well not to attempt to limit the possibilities of original metrical compinations and developments in the Roman comedian. Plautus was a general favourite in the days of republican Rome. Cicero...admired Plautus as elegans, ubanus, ingeniosus, facetus (De offic. i. 29, 104)...(T)hat he found many admirers, even in the Augustian age, Horace himself bears witness. A number of his plays were lost for a period during the Middle Ages, but found in an ancient manuscript discovered in 1429. Aftere the revival of learning Plautus was reinstated, and took rank as one of the great dramatists of antiquity; cf. Shakespeare, HAMLET, I.ii. 420, where Polonius says, OThe best actors in the world...Seneca cannot be too heavy nor Plautus too light.O O EB, 13. Three pages [1 1/2 leaves] are replaced in attractive old manuscript; two pages in Matthew, and one page in Revelation. Numerous full page woodcuts thru the text, including one of each of the Apostles at the beginning of the Gospels. There are 23 beautiful full-page woodcuts that accompany the Book of Revelation. Also contains some contemporary marginal notes. Contemporary owner's signature is on the title page. Binding is tight. Later, probably late 19thc. half leather covers, front cover detached and rear cover loose, with cover over spine not present. Close-cropped margins, affecting only a small loss on some of the headings at the top of some pages. Some foxing and sporadic light dampstaining. Needs to be recased in period style, or to preference. MDXXX on the title page. Printed in German black-letter. The third (?) edition, and printed during Luther's lifetime. William Tyndale translated the New Testament into English from this work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Valder Bâle 1530 ? In-32 (110 X 62 mm), 443 pages. Exemplaire réglé. Plein maroquin rouge, dos sansnerf. Toutes tranches dorées. Reliure établie vers 1800. (Ors du dos ternis ; discrètes restaurations aux mors.) Texte entièrement en grec. Herodianus (175-249), historien latin de langue grecque, couvre la période de Rome qui lui est contemporaine, à savoir de Marc-Aurèle à Gordien III : pendant ces 60 années, 17 empereurs se succèdent, parmi lesquels, Commode, Macrin, Héliogabale, Caracalla, Septime-Sévère. C'est l'un des seuls témoins de cette période. Il semble s'adresser uniquement au public grec de l'Empire, et prend pour modèle Thucydide. Bel exemplaire de la 3ème édition séparée d'Herodien, après celles de Venise, 1524, et de Louvain, 1525. Le format est très inhabituel pour un texte grec publié à cette période. Publiée avec la seule adresse de Bâle, elle est attribuée à Johann Walder et datée de 1530 par Schweiger (Handbuch der classischen Bibliographie, Griechische Schriftsteller, page 136), ce qui en ferait la première publication de cet éditeur. vers 1530 - Petit in-8 gothique (129 x 85 mm) de 8 ff.n.ch. ; maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs rehaussées d'un filet, compartiments ornés de fleurons et petits fers, encadrement de filets droits et courbes avec fleurons d'angle sur les plats, doublures de maroquin rouge, dentelle intérieure, filet sur les coupes, tranches dorées (Bauzonnet). Brunet, V, 292 ; Cat. du baron de Ruble, n° 161 : cet exemplaire ; Guy Bechtel, Catalogue des gothiques français, 2008, M-109. – Voir Brigitte Moreau 1529/1911 pour une autre édition gothique sortant probablement des mêmes presses, avec variantes. Une pièce très rare de l'ancienne poésie française. Elle se compose, pour la plus grande partie, du poème qui donne le titre au recueil : une facétie en vers décasyllabiques et pentasyllabiques évoquant la syphilis, ce mal napolitain que les Italiens baptisèrent mal français. Les sept marchands dont le nom figure sur le titre viennent l'un après l'autre se plaindre de l'état déplorable dans lequel ils se trouvent après avoir payé, souvent fort cher, le mal dont ils sont atteints. On trouve à la suite quatre rondeaux et une ballade composés dans le même esprit. L'ouvrage est orné de deux jolis bois gravés, le premier tiré sur le titre et flanqué d'une bordure (un clerc à son écritoire), le second occupant la totalité du verso du dernier feuillet (deux personnages en hermine haranguent des soldats en armure). On ne connaît que deux éditions gothiques de cette plaquette ; une troisième, elle aussi très rare, fut imprimée à Lyon par J. Moderne vers 1540, mais avec le titre en caractères gothiques et le texte en lettres rondes (voir Rothschild, I, 575). Précieux exemplaire, l'un des deux ou trois connus. Le deuxième exemplaire se trouve à la British Library. Un troisième, conservé à la BnF (anciennes collections Taylor et Rothschild), présente des particularités qui en font un exemplaire unique. Ces variantes ont été relevées par Émile Picot et Brigitte Moreau : la devise "Souffrir pour parvenir" à l'explicit, et une Balade joyeuse dédiée à la Vierge en place des deux petites pièces achevant notre volume. Il s'agit donc de tirages distincts, voire d'éditions différentes (bien que Guy Bechtel les confonde dans une seule notice), sortant vraisemblablement des presses du même imprimeur : Brigitte Moreau a attribué l'exemplaire Rothschild à Julien Hubert, dont on ne connaît qu'une seule impression signée. Quoi qu'il en soit, on ne peut que souligner la rareté de cette pièce dont les bibliographes n'ont pu recenser, toutes éditions confondues, que cinq exemplaires. Ce volume a appartenu au baron de Ruble (cat. 1899, n° 161, reprod.), et provient des collections Heber, Crozet et de Lurde. Il a servi pour la réimpression de l'ouvrage "faite par les soins de M. Veinant, en 1838, et qui forme la première livraison de la Collection de poésies, romans, chroniques, etc, publiée par Silvestre" (cat. de Ruble). Très bel exemplaire, finement relié par Bauzonnet. Buon esemplare.Ispiratio dal lavoro di Pico della Mirandola, Reuchlin divenne uno dei fondatori della Cabala cristiana con la pubblicazione di De verbo mirifico (1494) e il De arte cabalistica (1517). Quest'ultimo lavoro, che e' dedicato a Leo X, e' un dialogo socratico. Gli interlocutori sono Filolao (un pitagorico) Marranus (un maomettano di Costantinopoli). Questi due uomini erano giunti a Francoforte per incontrarsi con Simone, famoso cabalista ebreo; questi, invitati gli ospiti a casa sua, aveva illustrato loro i rudimenti della Cabala, spiegando i motivi per cui il mago, conoscendola, poteva operare miracoli. La Cabala era una teologia simbolica, nella quale non solo le lettere e i nomi, ma le cose stesse erano segni divini. Essa non potevaessere ricercata ne' attraverso il contatto rozzo dei sensi, ne' attraverso gli argomenti inoppugnabili della logica. Il suo fondamento si trova nella terza regione delle conoscenze, dove non esiste prova evidente, ne' sillogismo dotato di forza dimostrativa. Larte del cabalista e' il mezzo per giungere alla conoscenza simbolica ed il cabalista e' il tramite con cui Dio puo' compiere miracoli. Senza la Cabala sarebbe impossibile per luomo arrivare alla comprensione delle realta' divine, che non sono soggette alle argomentazioni razionali dei mortali, ne' ai sofismi irti di spine delle dispute, ne' ai sillogismi umani, proprio in virtu' della loro natura divina. Reuchlin situava luomo a meta' fra il mondo fisico ed il mondo soprasensibile; egli poteva conoscere il primo con i sensi e con la ragione, il secondo con la mente; la mente era quindi considerata superiore alla ragione, perche' era locchio dellanima e poteva vedere il divino.Adams R-381; Caillet 9333

Agréable édition parisienne du premier livre de diététique. L'édition originale a paru à Rome vers 1475, mais l'ouvrage connut un grand succès dans la première moitié du XVIe siècle et fut souvent réimprimé. Le titre est orné d'un encadrement architectural gravé sur bois et de la marque de Jean Petit. A la fois manuel de santé et livre de recettes, le traité de Platina ""va renouveler la cuisine européenne, en l'italianisant. Le souci primordial qui doit guider, selon lui, les cuisiniers est de distribuer de la joie, de la santé et du bien-être. Il se réclame d'Épicure, de Columelle et d'Apicius. Si on retrouve chez lui les sauces au vin de la cuisine du Moyan Age, il est plus réservé sur l'usage des condiments. Pour relever ses plats, plutôt que d'en noyer le goût avec les fortes épices alors en usage, il se contente ici d'un peu de jus de citron ou d'orange, là d'une pincée de gingembre ou de cinnamone. Il préconise les grillades, vante les légumes, et énumère quinze sortes de salades... Platine rapporte aussi tout ce qu'il a lu dans les ouvrages de ses devanciers... Des articles, plus ou moins courts, définissent les règles de la vie, la préparation des repas, et donnent des recettes. Au livre II, les fruits sont étudiés un à un (...) et sont suivis de notices sur le miel, le sucre, le lait, le fromage, les œufs, etc. Ailleurs il s'occupe des épices (...), du gibier, des volailles et des poissons. Le livre X contient un important article sur le vin"" (Gérard Oberlé, Les Fastes de Bacchus et de Comus, pp. 48-49). L'humaniste et historien Bartolomeo Sacchi (1421-1481) prit le pseudonyme de Platina en l'honneur de sa ville natale, Piadena, près de Crémone. Après une brève carrière militaire, il reprit ses études et devint le secrétaire de plusieurs cardinaux. Une lettre qu'il écrivit pour protester contre la suppression du Collège des Abréviateurs, dont il faisait partie, provoqua la colère de Paul II et lui valut quatre mois de prison. Ses positions critiques vis à vis de l'église, tout comme son affiliation à l'Accademia Romana de Pomponio Leto, dont les idéaux humanistes et de restauration classique choquaient la curie romaine, entraînèrent une nouvelle plainte, et Platina fut arrêté, torturé et jeté dans les geôles du Castel Sant'Angelo. Relâché en 1469, réhabilité, il fut admis comme bibliothècaire à la Vaticane en 1475, poste qu'il conserva jusqu'à sa mort. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages historiques, dont une vie des papes. La premiere edition de cet ouvrage est parue en 1530 chez De Marneff a Poitiers. Elle fut reimprimee en 1532, 1535, 1536, 1537, 1539, et connut encore de nombreuses reeditions plus tardives. Les exemplaires sont devenus rares. On trouve l'edition originale et ses reeditions a la BN de France. La British Library possede quant a elle de nombreuses reeditions. Edition a caracteres Batards. §Pleine Basane fauve XVIIIe. Dos a nerfs orne. Piece de titre en maroquin rouge. Un mors fendus en tete et en queue avec petit manque atteignant cette derniere. Quelques frottements. §Jean Bouchet (1476-vers1550) est un ecrivain et poete francais ne a Poitiers. Ami de Rabelais, de Louis de Ronsard (pere du poete), il fut remarque pour sa precocite et son erudition. En matiere de poesie, il fut le premier a s'astreindre a l'alternance des rimes feminines et masculines. Ses livres, notamment Les annales d'Aquitaine, connurent un vif et durable succes de son temps. Le triomphe de la dame amoureuse est de suivre la difficile voie de l'enseignement de la vertu et de la morale telles qu'elle furent vehiculees et enseignees par l'eglise, et cela tant dans la vie quotidienne (comment bien elever ses enfants, bien manger, tenir sa maison, etre une bonne epouse...) que d'une facon plus generale, en evitant le peche d'orgueil, d'avarice ou de colere. L'ouvrage constitue un temoignage precieux sur la vie quotidienne des couples a la Renaissance et sur la facon de concevoir la sante, la nourriture et la beaute, et ordonne un breviaire du comportement amoureux en accord avec la doctrine de l'eglise. Reunion exceptionnelle de ces trois ouvrages de voyages (fort rares) en editions originales, le premier sur la Suisse, le second sur Naples et le dernier sur Hildesheim en Saxe. L'ouvrage de Simler et de Turler sont en impression italique. Vignette de l'imprimeur pour le livre de Turler. §Plein Velin d'epoque. Dos lisse. Piece de titre beige et autres titres a la plume rouge. Tranches noires. Bon exemplaire. §Le Vallesiae descriptio constitue le premier livre sur les alpes et plus generalement la montagne. Josias Simler (1530-1576) fut un naturaliste suisse et un voyageur alpestre decide a promouvoir son pays, le livre consiste dans une juste description geographique du Valais et des alpes. L'ouvrage sera reedite en 1633 par les Elzevir. §Jerome Turler effectua plusieurs voyages a Naples dont il fit la relation dans cet ouvrage . C'est un voyageur anglais de la Renaissance, petri de culture grecque et latine qui rapporte sa vision des monuments de Naples et de l'Etna. §Anton Mocker, professeur au college d'Hildesheim, est responsable de cette histoire et description de la ville d'Hildesheim, en Allemagne, pres de Hanovre, qui fut le centre de la dynastie des empereurs ottoniens et une creation de l'eveque Berward (992-1022). L'Araucana ( oublie par le Dictionnaire des iuvres Laffont-Bompiani, qui n'en est pas a une lacune pres) est un des grands poemes epiques espagnols. Cervantes met l'iuvre d'Ercilla au dessus de celles du Tasse et de Camoens. Voltaire a compare la harangue du vieux Colocolo aux Araucaniens ( Chant II) a celle que Nestor adresse aux capitaines grecs et il conclut que celle d'Ercilla etait infiniment superieure a celle d'HomereE! Ercilla ne en 1530 a Bermeo fut un des conquerants de l'Araucanie. Il soutint contre ce peuple robuste et farouche une guerre longue et sanglante. Les Araucans ( habitants d'une contree montagneuse du Chili) combattirent pour leur liberte avec une energie admirable. L'armee espagnole perdit beaucoup d'hommes dans cette guerre qui n'avait d'autre but que d'ajouter quelques montagnes arides a la domination espagnole. Ercilla fut le chantre de cette conquete. Il employa ses rares loisirs a celebrer les evenements dont il etait le principal acteur. Faute de papier, il ecrivit la premiere partie de son epopee sur des morceaux de cuir. L'original espagnol vit le jour a Salamanque en 1569. Ercilla est mort a Madrid vers 1603. Il fallut attendre 1824 pour avoir une traduction francaise. Le traducteur Gilbert de Merlhiac est une celebrite de Correze. Il naquit a Brive-la-Gaillarde en 1789 et fit carriere comme lieutenant de vaisseau. Sabin 22727.- Bel exemplaire de ce livre rare.

Die erste von Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547) edierte Ausgabe von Plinius' naturwissenschaftlicher Enzyklopädie. Nachdem Rhenanus in der Klosterbibliothek Murbach eine unbekannte Handschrift [MS Murbacensis] von Plinius' einzigem erhaltenen Werk entdeckt hatte, erschien 1525 eine von Erasmus von Rotterdam besorgte Pliniusausgabe bei Johann Froben. Im darauf folgenden Jahr veröffentlichte Rhenanus seine Kommentare ("Emendationes"), die wie wir aus Briefen wissen, bei verschiedenen Humanisten wie Andrea Alciati, Bonifaz Amerbach oder Guillaume Budé auf grosses Interesse stiessen. Als 1527 Johann Froben an der Pest starb übernahm dessen Sohn Hieronymus Froben die berühmte Offizin. Für ihn bearbeitete dann Rhenanus die vorliegende Ausgabe der Historia naturalis von Plinius, wobei er Teile seiner "Emendationes" mitverarbeitete. "Peut-on trouver dans les éditions bâloises successives la trace de l'intégration des leçons du Murbacensis ou celle des conjectures de Rhenanus? Il faut sans doute, pour répondre à cette question, distinguer plusieurs aspects dans l'établissement du texte. Le plus apparent d'entre eux reside dans la presence in margine de leçons alternatives à celles finalement retenues dans le texte . Ces variants marginales sont assez généralement adoptées comme leçons du texte dans l'édition de 1530. L'adoption de cette nouvelle leçon fait alors disparaître la note marginale" (M.-E. Boutroue). Die Ausgabe wird mit Hieronymus Frobens kurzer Vorrede auf der Rückseite des Titels eröffnet. Darin erwähnt er nebst dem Herausgeber Rhenanus auch seinen Mitarbeiter, den Prager Philologen Sigismund Gelenius [=Gelensky (1498-1554)], der den Druck überwachte. Eine von Gelenius besorgte Pliniusausgabe mit seinem eigenen Kommentar veröffentlichte Froben dann 1535. The rare first edition of Pliny the Elder's Natural History composed by the Selestat humanist Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547). One year after the first (Johann) Froben edition of Pliny's only work known Rhenanus published in March 1526 his volume of commentaries ("Emendationes") based on a newly found manuscript of Pliny's text at the monestary in Murbach (Alsace). As we know from letters they attracted great interest by various humanists among them Andrea Alciati, Bonifacius Amerbach and Guillaume Budé. After Johann Froben's death in 1527 his son Hieronymus took over the famous printing press. Froben commissioned Beatus Rhenanus to prepare a revised Pliny edition which finally was printed in January 1530. Im Umfeld und als Schüler des berühmten Prof. Ulrich Zasius veröffentlichte er 1530 in Basel die vorliegende bedeutende Rechtsquelle "leges Riboariorum". Aus alten Handschriften wurden hier zum ersten Mal Teile der alemannischen Rechtsaufzeichnungen des Frühmittelalters publiziert. I & II) and contemporary full blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, without clasps (vol. III); some worming to spine of first volume Folio . First editions of these three volumes of sermons by Johann Eck. The first two volumes and the third volume were separately published works and are complete in themselves. The first work, in two volumes, is on the gospels, arranged according to church year with volume one covering gospel readings from Advent to Easter and volume two contains gospel readings from Easter to Advent. The third volume was printed in Augsburg (1531) for an Ingolstadt publisher, consists of sermons given on high holidays of the church year. Two addition, very short, volumes were printed in Augsburg in 1534 (158 ff.) and 1539 (67 ff.). Only these three volumes include the exquisite woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham which are described in detail in Gustav Pauli's Hans Sebald Beham Ein Kritisches Verzeichniss (Strassburg; 1901) numbers 703 - 747 and see pages 334 (vols. I & II) and 481 (vol. III). Some of the woodcuts have been attributed to Hans Schäuferlein and M. Ostendorfer (whose monogram appears on several). Muther (German Book Illustration) notes that Beham shared the 41 drawings in 1530 for this book with Ostendorfer and the artist L.B. Although there are some traces of use minor defects mentioned above they don't affect the beautiful woodcuts which appear in fine dark impressions. In very handsome contemporary (but not matching) blindstamped pigskin bindings which is understandable since they were issued as separate works in different cities by different printers. 3 volumes in 2 ([12], 189 ; 225 [i.e. 226] leaves : [8], CCCV leaves. Elaborate historiated woodcut title borders on each part with 63 woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham and Hans Schäuferlein in vols I & II and 45 woodcuts by Beham and M. Ostendorfer in vol. III. First title printed in red and black; woodcut initials and ornamental borders. (152) lvs. Unrecorded edition by Willem Vorsterman at Antwerp, of a very popular devotional work, explaining and depicting the office of Mass and other sacraments to the common people. First published at Gouda in 1506, it was several times republished at Antwerp by various publishers, mostly under the title: Boexken van der missen. Nijhoff-Kronenberg lists two Vorsterman-editions under the present title, one dated 1538, and another undated, probably published in 1529, but both show spelling differences and another typeset compared with our edition. The full sub-title reads: "Hier begint een devoet boecxken, seer profitelic allen goeden kersten menschen. Als hoe men salichlick sal biechten. Ende hoe men eerwaerdeliken ten heylighen sacramente gaen sal met anderen profitelike leeringhen ende ghebedekens daer in besloten: Ghemaeckt ende geordineert bi broeder Gheerit vander Goude, minrebroeder vanden observanten ghenoemt". Whether the author is identical with Guilhelmus de Gouda, who published a much shorter Latin Tractatus de expositione misse. Editus a fratre Guilhelmo de gouda ordinis minorum de observatia, of which many incunable editions were published, both in the Northern and Southern Netherlands, is uncertain but probable. Nijhoff-Kronenberg however, treats them as two different people, and lists the one Latin edition published after 1500, at Deventer in 1504, under Guilielmus de Gouda, without reference to Gerrit vander Goude. Also special and very attractive about our copy is that all the charming woodcuts were nicely coloured by hand at the time. Good copy of an unknown edition.- (With old ms. owner's name on fly leaf; traces of use; several small restorations to the woodcuts and the leaves; sl. thumbed). Cf. Fameux traite des cautelles du juriste italien et professeur de droit Bartolomeo Cipolla. Ce traite qui parut pour la premiere fois a Perouse en 1473-1474, rendit Cipolla particulierement renomme. Comme l'annonce le titre, les textes qu'il contient reglementent des situations de la vie courante. Il s'articule en deux parties : "Servi urba praediorum" et "De Servi rusti praediorum". Cipolla, ne a Verone vers 1420, enseigna a Ferrare, puis a Verone, ou il collabora a la redaction des statuts de la cite. En 1474, i fut titulaire de la premiere chaire de droit civil. Ex libris manuscrit sur la page de garde : "Teyssier". Passages soulignes a l'encre brune ancienne.

According to Claes, Verdeyen, and Van Loonen the first edition, in French and Dutch only, had been published in about 1530, and had been composed by an Antwerp schoolteacher, Noel de Barlaimont. Since then it had been continuously added to and published in a varying numbers of languages, up till the present eight languages. The present edition starts with explaining to the students the importance of language-study, not only for merchants and travellers, but also for the people at court or in the army, and assures the students that they will be taught to speak and write in all the major languages in an easy and inexpensive way, for which they otherwise would have had to pay several expensive language teachers. The book itself is divided in two main parts, the first part containing, in 8 chapters, dialogues in various situations, at the dinner-table, when bying and selling, when pressing for payment, asking for travelling directions and other informations, at an inn, on rising, opening-hours etc., on merchandizing, and writing reports, contracts, receipts of payment etc. The second part then contains a vocabulary of words most in use, also in 8 languages, the alphabet arranged after the Dutch. Rarissime Edition Originale en Espagnol de la celebre "Pharsale" du poete et historien Lucain (39-65), neveu de Seneque et ne comme lui a Cordoue. Cette traduction en prose, due a Martin Lasso de Oropesa, demeura jusqu'en 1684 la seule version espagnole de Lucain et elle fut reimprimee a diverses reprises dans le cours du 16e siecle. "Lucain se place dans la lignee des ecrivains espagnols de Rome. D'une Å“uvre abondante, voire considerable, touchant les genres les plus divers, poemes de fantaisie, tragedie, ballets-pantomimes..., il ne reste qu'une epopee en dix chants, La Pharsale, recit de la guerre civile menee entre Cesar et Pompee" (Encyclopudia Universalis). Exemplaire lave, un peu court de marges avec quelques reparations marginales, taches et traces d'humidite. Il porte diverses marques d'appartenance anciennes: l'ex-libris manuscrit de Alonso del Rincon, avec quelques lignes autographes de sa belle ecriture humanistique dans le corps de l'ouvrage; l'ex-libris manuscrit d'un docteur date de 1600; et enfin celui d'un certain Bartolome de Cardenas. Palau, 143291: "Primera edicion castellana. Es en prosa y se supone impresa en Flandes hacia 1530. Ha figurado en antiguos catalogos madrilenos pero actualmente es rara. Jhdts mit überreicher Blindprägung und Titel-Goldprägung im Stil der Renaissance, dreiseitigem Goldschnitt mit schöner ornamentaler Punzierung.Gering berieben an den drei Bünden und dem oberen Kapital mit kleinen Fehlstellen vorderes Außengelenk angeplatzt 1 Bl. mit kl. Eckausriß (Papierfehler, kein Textverlust) Vorsätze gebräunt. Dieser Schäferkalender, gesetzt in einer Bastarda, gibt Anleitungen für das Datieren beweglicher Feste, der Mondzyklen etc., wobei die 4 großen Holzschnitte Hände als Gedächtnisstützen zeigen. In der Druckermarke tragen ein Schäfer und ein Doktor einen Schild mit dem Bild von St. Denis. Provenienz: aus der Biblioteca Colombina, mit deren Exlibris auf Innendeckel. Der 2., illegitime Sohn des Christoph Columbus, Fernando (Ferdinand), 1488-1539, begleitete seinen Vater als 13-Jähriger auf der vierten Amerikafahrt und gründete die hochberühmte Biblioteca (in Sevilla) mit ihren ca. 12000 Titel aufgrund seiner wissenschaftlichen, insbes. kosmographischen Ambitionen er galt als größter Bibliophiler seiner Zeit. Ende des 19. Jhdts erwarb der Kunstsammler Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919) dieses Exemplar, ließ es neu binden und versah es mit seinem Bibliotheksnummer-Schildchen (No. 104 auf dem vorderen Innendeckel). Auf dem inneren Hinterdeckel das Exlibris der Bibliotheca Broxbourniana mit dem Datum 17 March 1949 Gründer der Bibliothek war Albert Ehrmann (1890-1969) sein Intitialen-Exlibris auf dem vorderen Innendeckel, seine hs. Initialen auf dem hinteren Innendeckel. Die Bibliothek gelangte 1977 zur Auktion. Nur 3 Exemplare dieses Werks sind bekannt: BL London und BN Paris (cf. Moreau III, 2066) und das vorliegende (cf. Basel: Froben, 1530. First edition of one of the great rarities of geology and mining; this is the first scientific book by Agricola. Regarding the extreme rarity of this book, it is revealing to note that Pres. Hoover, while forming his great collection on mining and metallurgy, failed to acquire a copy of the first edition (and Agricola was his favorite author!). In 1527, Agricola had finished his studies in Germany and Italy and was appointed town physician at Joachimsthal. !In those days St. Joachimsthal was the most important mining center in Europe besides Schwaz in the Tyrol. Miners and smelters, some of whom suffered from occupational diseases, were crowded together. Agricola studied not only their ailments but also their life, labor, and equipment. Day and night he visited the mines and the smoky smelting houses, and soon he had an excellent knowledge of mining and metallurgy. He recorded his impressions in Bermannus (1530)! !The success of this pioneer delineation of mining and metallurgy was assured by Erasmus, who contributed a letter of recommendation. Agricola was now a well-known author, and he indefatigably sustained his reputation with a flow of important books.!!D.S.B., I, p. 77. This book was!a sort of catechism on mineralogy, mining terms, and mining lore! !Agricola!s first work in relation to mining!The book is in the main devoted to a correlation of the minerals mentioned by the Ancients with those found in the Saxon mines!It is of interest to find here the first appearance of the names of many minerals which we have since adopted from the German into our own nomenclature.! Apponnyi "sehr schöne, interessante" Rede am 1. Jänner des Jahres vor dem Kaiser, dem Papst und 30 Kardinälen in Bologna gehalten, und zwar unmittelbar, "nachdem der Friede zwischen den beiden Fürsten am Vorabend feierlich verkündet worden war. Der Redner hofft, daß der zwischen den christlichen Potentaten nunmehr gesicherte Friede es ermöglichen werde, den Türken endlich aufs Haupt zu schlagen [...] Amaseo wurde später vom Papst Paul III. in diplomatischen Missionen nach Polen gesandt, es scheint aber, daß er schon damals hohe Gönner dortselbst hatte, sonst wäre wohl die in Bologna gehaltene Rede nicht noch im selben Jahr in Krakau gedruckt worden" (Apponyi). - Auf dem von vierteiliger Holzschnittbordüre eingefaßten Titelblatt ein Dekastichon von Anianus Burgonius "in commendationem Romuli". - Nicht auf dt. oder internationalen Auktionen seit 1970, kein Ex. über OCL nachweisbar. Printer's marks on t.p.s. Sander [Sanders], Nicholas (c.1530!1581), religious controversialist. OOn 25 January 1572 Sander left Louvain, summoned to Rome. He had a very good relationship with Pius V, who had helped him financially, and it was widely expected that the pope would make him a cardinal...Almost as soon as Sander arrived in Rome he began to write his most influential work, De origine ac progressu schismatis anglicani. Its textual history is complicated. Sander left it unfinished. Only one incomplete manuscript is known, partially annotated by Persons. The first edition, nominally published in Cologne in 1585, actually appeared from the press of Jean Foigny at Rheims. Its editor, Edward Rishton, reworked at least book 3. Rishton's account of his edition includes a number of mysteries, chief among them the identity of the OJodochus Skarnhert of CologneO who had pressed him for a copy of De origine and who had taken responsibility for its publication. It has been suggested that Skarnhert may have been Persons, who is also said to have seen the expanded second edition (1586) through the press. Against these two points is Persons's treatment of De origine and its author in his OCertamen ecclesiae anglicanaeO, which refers to the writer as Oa most famous man for learning, talent and pietyO (Robert Persons, 31), together with Persons's claim that book 2 was Allen's work. It seems likely that Allen had a large hand in the whole of the text as printed, both the original and the revised editions...De origine has a very simple plot: Henry VIII's desire for a divorce caused the Reformation. The villains other than Henry are drawn with broad strokes, especially Cardinal Wolsey. Most of the second edition's interpretation and substance descend from Pole, particularly his Pro ecclesiasticae unitatis defensione, which is frequently quoted, his letter congratulating Mary I on her accession, and perhaps some unpublished and possibly lost works, including a letter about Henry's tomb. Pole figures as the hero: book 2 concludes with his death, not that of Mary Tudor, and he is praised as Othe hope of England, great ornament and light of the church of RomeO (N. Among other sources was a lost life of John Fisher that contained the bishop's witticism on the way up the scaffold (suspiciously reminiscent of Thomas More's): OFeet, do your job, and the rest of my journey will take care of itselfO; Richard Hilliard's mainly lost history of the English Reformation; and Johannes Cochlaeus's attack on Richard Morison's Apomaxis calumniarum. Sander put his legal training to good use in long discussions about the validity of Henry's marriage to Katherine of Aragon and the invalidity of that to Anne Boleyn.O [Oxford DNB]#11;Gotthardt (d.1589) Catholic polemicist and priest. He earned his degree in theology and philosophy and in 1576 and became rector in Passau in 1577. He fled because of the Protestant uprisings but returned in 1584. France, Tours or Paris, ca. 1530 - Single column 21 lines of text written in a very fine tiny upright humanistic hand. Attractively matted. Rubrics in red two paragraph marks in black or gold against a gold or white background two line fillers in black and gold (one in the shape of a knotted rope) a two-line initial in gold on a gray ground with wispy gold decoration text on both sides within a knotted ropework border in gold and red with convoluted tassels at the bottom. One side of the leaf WITH AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE SMALL MINIATURE SHOWING MARK seated with a scroll on his knees the youthful apostle dressed in blue and maroon deep in thought his elbow resting on his knee his emblem the lion looking on with an especially charming expression of sympathy; the scene in an interior with a window at the top left above a leafy molding the whole within a plain gold frame (the miniature measuring approximately 21 x 18 mm.). IN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE CONDITION. In this miniature the painter has been remarkably successful in giving both the Evangelist and his emblematic companion clear expressions of emotion. The depiction of architectural detail like the window molding here is typical of the elegant little touches in these very small miniatures that could only have been executed convincingly by an artist with the highest degree of skill.

Lazarus Spengler (1479-1534), Sohn eines Ratsschreibers, studierte seit 1494 Rechtswissenschaft in Leipzig, Abbruch des Studiums nach dem Tod des Vaters, seit 1496 in der Nürnberger Ratskanzlei beschäftigt. Seit 1516 ist er Ratsherr in Nürnberg. Nach seiner »Schutzrede und christliche Antwort eines ehrbaren Liebhabers christlicher Wahrheit« von 1519 wird er 1520 von Eck in die gegen Luther gerichtete Bannbulle aufgenommen. Im Jahre 1521 nimmt er als Vertreter Nürnbergs am Reichstag zu Worms teil. Das Werk erschien anonym und versucht, Irrtümer der katholischen Kirche u.a. aus dem Kirchenrecht zu widerlegen. Das Erscheinen der Schrift verursachte großes Aufsehen. Luther sah sich veranlasst, die Schrift in Wittenberg mit einem eigenen Vorwort herauszugeben (s. Benzing 2774).

Primera edición, segunda emisión, con la genealogía de Carlos V en francés. Representación original de la cabalgata, cortejo y celebraciones que se ofrecieron en Boloña en 1530 con ocasión de la coronación de Carlos V como Emperador del Scrao Imperio Romano por el Papa Clemente VII. “Una de las obras más importantes del siglo XVI desde el punto de vista del grabado” (Ruggieri). Las 40 láminas que componen el libro fueron grabadas al aguafuerte por Hogenber y Bruining en un estilo muy característico, y están concebidas para ser montadas una tras otra y formar un inmenso cuadro. Todos los personajes que aparecen ilustrados asistieron a la cabalgata y están representados hasta el más mínimo detalle incluyendo su vestimenta, montura, adornos, etcétera. Las tres últimas láminas representan las celebraciones ofrecidas al pueblo e incluyen músicos y un fabuloso banquete. Nuestro ejemplar debe ser uno de los pocos que conserva su encuadernacion original. Incluye además adherida a la guarda delantera un eneorme y fabuloso retrato de Carlos V grabado hacia 1540 que no pertenece al libro, posiblemente obra del grabador boloñés Giulio Bonasone. This is a collector's copy recently rebound in 3/4 leather with marbled paper boards. Gilt title on spine. Text tanned otherwise in excellent condition except for few tiny creases bottom corner first four pages. Few small peppercorn size stains on table of contents page. Three small Roman numerals in margin of page 25. 102 pages plus 8 page table of contents and index. This is a series of excerpts from ancient authors, reviewed by the historian Myrsili Lesbii, about the origins of Italy and the Tyrrhenians. The Tyrrhenians were a Pelasgian people who migrated to Italy and formed the parent stock of the Etrurians. The title page states: "Fragmenta vetustissimotum aotorum, summo studio ac diligentia nunc regognita." Photo of the book and copy of the title page are available upon request.

He was professor of civil law in Valencia. Deeply affected by the Reformation, he eventually moved to Geneva and became a Protestant. He died in 1635. According to Schmidt (Aristotle and the Renaissance ), his edition of the Organon became standard. He also wrote a great many legal titles. In addition to this introduction to Lull, he performed a similar service for Ramus. There is some confusion about the first edition of this work but Rogent/Duran spends some time discussing references to earlier printings but finally comes to the conclusio that this is the first edition (V II,158).#11;First Latin edition of this pocket summary of the Lullian art, by the Italian born Aristotelian and legal theorist Giulio Pace. Older catalogues give the date as 1537 or 1538 but Ritter's date of 1530 is now accepted. § A treatise on the signs of conception, abortion and obstetrics. It is one of several gynaecological works by Bonacciuoli. His best known work Enneas muliebris a, sex manual written for Lucrezia Borgia, was first printed in 1502 and reprinted in Wolf and Spach, Gynaeciorum (1597) and again in Pineau, De virginitatis notis (1639). There is a brief foreword by Sybold, and at the end of Bonacciuoli's work is printed Aristotle, De indiciis quibus maris a foeminae generatione generatio discernatur. Bonacciuoli (or Buonaccioli in some sources) was professer of medicine at Ferrara from sometime at the end of the fifteenth century. O'Dowd and Philipp note that 'Bonacciuoli gave detailed descriptions of the mons veneris, clitoris and hymen,' presumably this is in Enneas muliebris, but no source is given (Michael J. O'Dowd and Elliot E. Philipp, The history of obstetrics and gynaecology (1994) p. 60).

Das Stück enthält, neben der Widmung an den Nürnberger Stadtrat, eine sehr kurze Erklärung des Holzschnittes. Am Schluß sagt Meldemann, dass noch vieles zu erzählen wäre; da er aber eine größere Erklärung herausgegeben, so verweise er auf diese. Damit ist die Neuherausgabe der Relation des Stern von Lambach gemeint, die ebenfalls 1530 erschienen war (Kabdebo 1 und 9). Zunächst wandte sich Ladislaus von Mazedonien in seiner Rede an den Kaiser selbst und bat ihn, sich nicht daran zu stoßen, daß einige Ungarn mit den Türken verbindet seien, aber auch diese würden sich ihnen anschließen, sobald das kaiserliche Heer in Ungarn erscheinen werde. - Eindringlicher ist die Rede an die deutschen Fürsten. Bis jetzt sind die Ungarn im Kampfe gegen die Türken nie unterstützt worden, wenn aber jetzt auch der Türke die Deutschen tatenlos sieht, dringt er bis Deutschland vor, und dann wären auch die Ungarn und Slavonier gezwungen, sich dem türkischen Heere anzuschließen. Es folgen dann kriegstechnische Erörterungen (zit. nach Göllner). - Die schöne Titelbord. (Musper 626; Johnson 20) hatte der Petrarcameister 1519 für die Offizin Grimm u. Wirsung geschaffen, bei der sie 13 mal bis 1522 Verwendung fand (aussen u. unten ca. 1 mm. angeschnitten). Nr. u. hs. Eintr. a. Tit. beschabt (dadurch kl. According to Claes, Verdeyen, and Van Loonen the first edition, in French and Dutch only, had been published in about 1530, and had been composed by an Antwerp schoolteacher, Noel de Barlaimont. Since then it had been continuously added to and published in a varying numbers of languages, up till the present eight languages. The present edition starts with explaining to the students the importance of language-study, not only for merchants and travellers, but also for the people at court or in the army, and assures the students that they will be taught to speak and write in all the major languages in an easy and inexpensive way, for which they otherwise would have had to pay several expensive language teachers. The book itself is divided in two main parts, the first part containing, in 8 chapters, dialogues in various situations, at the dinner-table, when bying and selling, when pressing for payment, asking for travelling directions and other informations, at an inn, on rising, opening-hours etc., on merchandizing, and writing reports, contracts, receipts of payment etc. The second part then contains a vocabulary of words most in use, also in 8 languages, the alphabet arranged after the Dutch. Basel: Froben, 1530.p First edition of one of the great rarities of geology and mining; this is the first scientific book by Agricola. Regarding the extreme rarity of this book, it is revealing to note that Pres. Hoover, while forming his great collection on mining and metallurgy, failed to acquire a copy of the first edition (and Agricola was his favorite author!). In 1527, Agricola had finished his studies in Germany and Italy and was appointed town physician at Joachimsthal. !In those days St. Joachimsthal was the most important mining center in Europe besides Schwaz in the Tyrol. Miners and smelters, some of whom suffered from occupational diseases, were crowded together. Agricola studied not only their ailments but also their life, labor, and equipment. Day and night he visited the mines and the smoky smelting houses, and soon he had an excellent knowledge of mining and metallurgy. He recorded his impressions in Bermannus (1530)! !The success of this pioneer delineation of mining and metallurgy was assured by Erasmus, who contributed a letter of recommendation. Agricola was now a well-known author, and he indefatigably sustained his reputation with a flow of important books.!!D.S.B., I, p. 77. This book was!a sort of catechism on mineralogy, mining terms, and mining lore! !Agricola!s first work in relation to mining!The book is in the main devoted to a correlation of the minerals mentioned by the Ancients with those found in the Saxon mines!It is of interest to find here the first appearance of the names of many minerals which we have since adopted from the German into our own nomenclature.! Jhdts mit überreicher Blindprägung und Titel-Goldprägung im Stil der Renaissance, dreiseitigem Goldschnitt mit schöner ornamentaler Punzierung. Gering berieben; an den drei Bünden und dem oberen Kapital mit kleinen Fehlstellen; vorderes Außengelenk angeplatzt; 1 Bl. mit kl. Eckausriß (Papierfehler, kein Textverlust); Vorsätze gebräunt. Dieser Schäferkalender, gesetzt in einer Bastarda, gibt Anleitungen für das Datieren beweglicher Feste, der Mondzyklen etc., wobei die 4 großen Holzschnitte Hände als Gedächtnisstützen zeigen. In der Druckermarke tragen ein Schäfer und ein Doktor einen Schild mit dem Bild von St. Denis. Provenienz: aus der Biblioteca Colombina, mit deren Exlibris auf Innendeckel. Der 2., illegitime Sohn des Christoph Columbus, Fernando (Ferdinand), 1488-1539, begleitete seinen Vater als 13-Jähriger auf der vierten Amerikafahrt und gründete die hochberühmte Biblioteca (in Sevilla) mit ihren ca. 12000 Titel aufgrund seiner wissenschaftlichen, insbes. kosmographischen Ambitionen; er galt als größter Bibliophiler seiner Zeit. Ende des 19. Jhdts erwarb der Kunstsammler Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919) dieses Exemplar, ließ es neu binden und versah es mit seinem Bibliotheksnummer-Schildchen (No. 104; auf dem vorderen Innendeckel). Auf dem inneren Hinterdeckel das Exlibris der Bibliotheca Broxbourniana mit dem Datum 17 March 1949; Gründer der Bibliothek war Albert Ehrmann (1890-1969); sein Intitialen-Exlibris auf dem vorderen Innendeckel, seine hs. Initialen auf dem hinteren Innendeckel. Die Bibliothek gelangte 1977 zur Auktion. Nur 3 Exemplare dieses Werks sind bekannt: BL London und BN Paris (cf. Moreau III, 2066) und das vorliegende (cf. Fameux traité des cautelles du juriste italien et professeur de droit Bartolomeo Cipolla. Ce traité qui parut pour la première fois à Pérouse en 1473-1474, rendit Cipolla particulièrement renommé. Comme l'annonce le titre, les textes qu'il contient règlementent des situations de la vie courante. Il s'articule en deux parties : "Servi urba praediorum" et "De Servi rusti praediorum". Cipolla, né à Vérone vers 1420, enseigna à Ferrare, puis à Vérone, où il collabora à la rédaction des statuts de la cité. En 1474, i fut titulaire de la première chaire de droit civil. Ex libris manuscrit sur la page de garde : "Teyssier". Passages soulignés à l'encre brune ancienne.

Parigi, vaenundantur cum reliquis Ioanni Parvo, & Iodoco Badio, (colophon: in aedibus Ascensianis, ad Idus Febr. 1530), in-folio, leg. seicentesca in cartone ricoperta con fogli in pergamena da un codice musicale antico, (dorso piuttosto danneggiato dai tarli), carte [6], CCXXIIII - [2], CLXXIII. Con due bei frontespizi (il primo in rosso e nero), inseriti in cornice architettonica con al centro la raffigurazione di un torchio tipografico in azione. Il margine bianco inferiore delle prime quattro carte è stato rinforzato in antico (ora con lievi mancanze). Velatura d'umidità al margine esterno di due terzi del volume: quasi sempre molto leggera ma rinforzata nelle ultime 50 carte con angolo superiore esterno delle ultime carte reso assai fragile. Continuazione di: "Origenis Adamantii operum tomi duo priores, cum tabulis & indice generali proxie sequentibus". Mancano dunque i primi due tomi di solito anch'essi legati in un volume. Le edizioni antiche di Origene non sono comuni data la sua condizione di eretico. Questa è curata e stampata da Josse Bade.

Seltenes Werk des 1475 geborenen Kontroverstheologen und Inquisitors Jakob Latomus (eigentlich Jacques Masson, gest. 1544). Als Professor und Rektor der Löwener Universität bekämpfte er Luther wie Erasmus, Oecolampadius und Beatus Rhenanus. Erste Ausgabe, extrem selten: nicht im BMC Dutch, Adams. Nur ein Exemplar im NUC (Yale), nach KVK nur ein Exemplar in einer deutschen Bibliothek (JAL Emden). Die bemerkenswerte Druckermarke zeigt die personifizierte Zeit (bezeichnet TEMPUS), in der Tradition der falschen Gleichsetzung Chronos-Kronos dargestellt mit Flügel und Sichel, aber völlig nackt, was möglicherweise zur frühen Entfernung führte.

Basel: Froben, 1530. First edition of one of the great rarities of geology and mining; this is the first scientific book by Agricola. Regarding the extreme rarity of this book, it is revealing to note that Pres. Hoover, while forming his great collection on mining and metallurgy, failed to acquire a copy of the first edition (and Agricola was his favorite author!). In 1527, Agricola had finished his studies in Germany and Italy and was appointed town physician at Joachimsthal. “In those days St. Joachimsthal was the most important mining center in Europe besides Schwaz in the Tyrol. Miners and smelters, some of whom suffered from occupational diseases, were crowded together. Agricola studied not only their ailments but also their life, labor, and equipment. Day and night he visited the mines and the smoky smelting houses, and soon he had an excellent knowledge of mining and metallurgy. He recorded his impressions in Bermannus (1530)… “The success of this pioneer delineation of mining and metallurgy was assured by Erasmus, who contributed a letter of recommendation. Agricola was now a well-known author, and he indefatigably sustained his reputation with a flow of important books.”–D.S.B., I, p. 77. Several minerals, including bismuth, are described here for the first time. This is a fine copy of a rare book and only the second time I have had it (the previous copy was sold to Joseph Freilich). ❧ The Hoovers’ translation of De Re Metallica, pp. vii & 596-97–“According to Agricola’s own statement, he spent all the time not required for his medical duties in visiting the mines and smelters, in reading up in the Greek and Latin authors all references to mining, and in association with the most learned among the mining folk.
