Sophocles.
Tragoediae septem. Tragoediae nomina. Aiax flagellifer. Electra. Oedipus tyrannus. Antigone. Oedipus coloneus. Trachiniae. Philoctetes.
|
[Paris: Simon de Colines.] , 1528 - the issue without the final quire of errata (cf. Schreiber), lightly toned, line numbers and some underlining in pencil, a small marginal wormhole in second half, briefly stretching but only twice touching a character, ownership stamp depicting a rampant lion to title margin, ff. [200], 8vo., old sprinkled calf boards, rebacked in the twentieth century with brown morocco, backstrip with five raised bands, second compartment gilt-lettered direct, the rest plain, new endpapers (preserving old front papers), old leather a little worn at extremities, ownership inscriptions to endpapers, The third edition of Sophocles, and the first to be printed outside Italy. The text is based on that of the 1502 Aldine editio princeps. ?A very rare and neatly printed edition; it is much sought after by the Curious and is considered pretty correct? (Moss). ?In any state, it is a rare book? (Dibdin). The typeface, which de Colines takes full advantage of (printing only fifteen words on the title in Roman letters), is sometimes called his ?Sophocles type? after its use in this volume. It was his first Greek type, probably cut by Colines himself, and this is the first significant publication using it. This volume bears a number of gift inscriptions. The older front pastedown has an inscription to W. Cripps from the Rev?d Thos. Short accompanied by a note ?from the library of Peter Elmsley?. Above that is a what appears to be a purchase note (Elmsley?s?), ?28 Jan 1807, King & Lockie?. The recipient, W. Cripps, cannot be firmly identified, but Rev. Thomas Short is probably the tutor of Trinity College, Oxford (1789-1879), rather than his contemporary T.V. Short of Christ Church, and a barrister and MP named William Cripps (1805-1848) matriculated at Trinity while Short was in residence there. Peter Elmsley is the classical scholar (1774-1825), in his day the best British Hellenist since Porson and an important editor of Sophocles (see, e.g., Finglass, ?A Newly-Discovered Edition of Sophocles by Peter Elmsley? in GRBS 47, 2007). The older front flyleaf has an inscription of Charles Thomas Pettingal, dated 1801, another reading ?e dono J.H.G.,? and a substantial bibliographical note probably in the same hand as the purchase note on the pastedown. The new flyleaf bears a gift inscription: ?H. Lloyd-Jones / d.d. J.T.C. / praeceptor olim / iamdudum discipulus / MCMLXII?. Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones (1922-2009), who among his other distinctions edited Sophocles for the Oxford Classical Text series and the Loeb Classical Library, was inspired to study classics by his headmaster at Westminster School, John Traill Christie (a Trinity man, who was noted for his teaching of Sophocles). This inscription, meaning ?a gift given by J.T.C. / the teacher once, / now the student?, dates from 1962, not long after Lloyd-Jones was appointed Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford, and his former headmaster would certainly have been very proud. (Schreiber 32; Adams S1440; Dibdin II 410; Moss II 596; BM STC French 404) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Parabolæ sive similia… Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1528. Suivi de : De morte declamatio… in genere consolatorio. Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1529. Suivi de : Modus orandi Deum. Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1529.
|
Lyon, Gryphe, 1528-1529 In-12 de 160 pp., (4) ff. - (16) ff. Baudrier, Bibliographie lyonnaise, VIII, pp. 50-53."

Berlin Neubart, Heinrich (1915-1988) [editor]
Anales de Tlatelolco y Codice de Tlatelolco
|
xxiii+128 pages with plates, fold out reproduction of Tlatelolco Codex, folding tables and map. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 7") issued in wrappers. Prepared and anotated by Heinrich Berlin with a resume of the Anales and interpretation of the codex by Robert H Barlow. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition. The Codice de Tlatelolco is anonymous manuscript that Miguel Leon-Portilla believes was written as early as 1528 from a Tlatelolco perspective. Believed to be te first document in Nahuatl rendered into alphabetic script. It consists of its own narrative that mentions things not discussed in the Florentine Codex but is entirely consistent with it. Like the Florentine Codex, it suggests that Malinche facilited almost all communication between the Mexicas and other indigenous peoples.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp on half title and title, some edge wear at heal edges. Jacket edge wear with chips and tears, spine ends chipped, lightly soiled else a very good copy in a good to very good jacket.

- (830) pp. Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (1 copy, UB Tübingen); NUC, vol. 560, p. 215 (1 incomplete copy, U. Illinois); not in Adams; BMC STC German; Cathedral Libraries Cat.; OCLC WorldCat; VD 16. EXREMELY RARE AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED Lutheran catechism by Cyriacus Spangenberg (1528-1604), known only from two other copies (one incomplete). It begins with an eight-page foreword by Hieronymus Mencel (1517-1590), dated 1 March 1564, followed by Spangenberg's own four-page note to the reader (where he provides information about his work on his book, begun more than nine years before, and about his late father Johan Spangenberg, a prolific theological author) and two-page dedication to the brothers Otto Heinrich and Johann Friedrich, Dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, also dated 1564 from "Thal Manssfeld." After the catechism comes Die Christliche Haustafel noted on the title-page, with a drop-title on its first page. It provides guidelines for behaviour, with chapters devoted to bishops, ministers and other religious leaders, members of the congregation, people in government, servants, married men and women, parents, children, men and women generally, various sorts of servants and workmen, young people, widows and others. The book did indeed appear in the year 1564, also printed by Bawman in Erfurt. The present edition is new, however, with quite a different collation and corrected by the author. A third edition printed by Michel Schmuck at Schmalkalden appeared in 1566. OCLC WorldCat, the Karlsruher Virt. Katalog and the NUC record several copies of the 1564 and 1566 editions, as well as five later editions before the end of the century, but the only copies located for this first corrected edition are at the Universitätsbibliothek Tübingen and the University of Illinois. The Haustafel begins a new alphabet series in the signatures, and (with a Schwabacher type for its main text and italic for the marginal notes) differs typographically from the rest of the book (which uses a fraktur for its main text with notes in a smaller heavy fraktur and Latin passages in an attractive Venetian-style roman with small capitals), but the two parts use the same rotunda for the running heads and some quotations, and the preliminaries (set in a third fraktur) use both the small fraktur of the catechism and the italic of the Haustafel for its marginal notes. So the colophon at the end of the Haustafel likely applies to the entire book: "Gedruckt zu Erffurdt, durch Georgium Bawman, zum bunten Lawen, bey Sanct Paul."Both boards richly blind-tooled in panels, with roundels containing portraits of Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon and Huss, and in the central panel a larger figure of Justice with sword and scales, with the motto, ":IVSTICIA QVISQVIS PICTVRA:LVMINE CERNIS:DIC*DEVS EST*IVSTVS."Hand-written owners' inscriptions and marginal notes, sixteenth-eighteenth centuries; waterstained throughout, with the title-page damaged (not affecting the text or woodcut), and lacking only the final blank leaf (present in the Tübingen copy; the Illinois copy lacks this and three printed leaves). With minor marginal worm damage in the first forty and last five leaves, not affecting the text or woodcuts, a few minor tears (three very slightly affecting a catchword, one word in a marginal note and three words of the main text) and stains, small corners of two leaves gone (not affecting the text), and the text areas of an occasional sheet browned. Some pages numbered in manuscript to "826" (beginning with "1" on the second leaf and skipping one leaf between pp. "1" and "13"). Binding good, with only a few small wormholes and slightly rubbed. A sound and complete copy of an extremely rare catechism in an interesting and attractive contemporary binding.

|
Venice: Niccolo Zoppino, 1528. * Theatrum Orbis Terrarum facsimile edition edited by R.A. Skelton; see Harrisse, Bibliotheca americana vetustissima, no. 187; Sabin 6417; for the 1547 edition, see Mortimer, Italian, 82.. Small folio [31.5 x 22 cm], (10) pp., 73 ff., including title printed in red and black, with 2 full-page and 3 double-page maps and many maps in the text. Bound in early vellum over boards. Edges of title restored, gutter of initial and final leaves reinforced, single wormtrack through first 9 leaves, occasionally touching printed surface; light handsoiling throughout, but maps in strong impressions, overall good. Rare first edition. The isolario, or !book of islands,! was a cartographic form introduced and developed in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. Like the portolano, or pilot-book, to which it was related, it had its origin in the Mediterranean, as an illustrated guide for travelers in the Aegean Archipelago and the Levant. Bordone!s Isolario was the second isolario to be printed and the first to give prominence to the transatlantic discoveries. Skelton quotes Almagia as saying that it is, in fact, !the earliest complete work of its kind to have been produced by the printing-press in Italy or anywhere else.!The Isolario is divided into three books, devoted respectively to the !islands and peninsulas! of the western ocean, to the Mediterranean, and to islands of the Indian Ocean and the Far East. While this order corresponds very roughly to that of Ptolemy, it gives conspicuous priority to the discoveries across the Atlantic. Besides a page of diagrams illustrating the construction of a circular world map and windroses of !ancient! and !modern type,! there are three general maps: Europe, the Aegean, and an oval world map. Scattered through the text, in the appropriate places, are 107 small maps, plans or views including a nearly three-quarter page plan of Mexico City before the conquest of Cortez!which qualifies because it is an island.According to Cortazzi, in his Isles of Gold Antique Maps of Japan: !In 1528 the Italian cartographer Benedetto Bordone (1460-1531) produced an atlas of islands printed in Italy by Nicolo d!Aristotle. In it he included a small map of an island which he called !Ciampagu,! presumably another version of Cipangu. This would seem to be the earliest European printed individual map of Japan! (p. 15).Bordone was a Paduan illuminator and wood-engraver who was apparently established at Venice by 1494.

Von Geschoss, Büchsen, Pulver, Salpeter und feurwergken ec. (colophon: Frankfurt on the Main, Chr. Egenolff, March 1531). 4to. With large woodcut illustration on title. Old vellum.
|
- 24 ll. Benzing, Egenolff Index Aurelienses, 126.593 (1 copy only, Mü); VD 16, B-9129 (same copy as I.A.). An extremely rare publication on gunpowder and military pyrotechnics. Copies of any edition are virtually unknown to bibliographers of the subject, but it appears that the work was often reprinted by Christian Egenholff and his heirs (see: J. Benzing, Chr. Eggenolff zu Strassburg und seine Drucke (1528-1530) ; Das Antiquariat X (1954), pp. 88-89, no. 13). Benzing mentions a copy of the 1529 edition and a "spätere, erweiterte Neu-ausgabe", z.B. 1597 bei Chr. Egenolffs Erben. The edition of 1531 is a reprint of the one of 1529, with the same woodcut on the title, and with the addition of a woodcut tailpiece. Tears throughout carefully repaired; some staining, but a good copy.

RENATUS, Publius Flavius Vegetius
Artis veterinariae, sive mulomedicinae
|
1528. FIRST EDITION. RENATUS, Publius Flavius Vegetius. Vegetii Renati Artis veterinariae, sive mulomedicinae libri quatuor. Basel: (Joannes Faber, 1528). Small quarto, late 18th-century full brown speckled calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, tan morocco spine label, marbled edges. $7500. First edition of the first printed book on veterinary medicine, in handsome late 18th-century speckled calf. Composed in the fifth century A.D., the Artis veterinariae is considered one of the earliest treatises on veterinary medicine, stressing the economic benefits of healthy horses and cattle, and advocating hygiene and preventative medicine. Some scholars question whether the author of this work was the noted Roman military strategist of the same name and author of Epitoma rei militaris. However, translator N.P. Milner notes "that it was the same Vegetius who wrote both works was proved through close verbal and stylistic parallels! and is generally accepted." Although other authors, notably Ruffius, had treated veterinary issues in works published in the late 1400s, the Artis veterinariae is considered the first printed book devoted entirely to veterinary medicine. Text in Latin, using the italic typeface invented by Aldus Manutius the Elder. With index following the dedicatory epistle. Woodblock title page and initials. Marginal annotations in an early hand. Early owner signature to top margin of title page. Evidence of bookplate removal. Light damp staining to some leaves. Binding fine with only slight loss to spine label. A handsome copy. Most scarce.

Alberti, Leon Battista.
How to Do It: Guides to Good Living for Renaissance Italians. Chicago 2000. ? ? Schönes Exemplar, nur gering fleckig. ? Gamba 1189 (Anmerkung). Vgl. Gay/Lemonnyer II 457 und Adams A 496 (nur spätere Ausgaben). * Rare edition of the chief handbook on love from the time of the Renaissance, written by the great humanist in ca.1429. This copy contains an exceptionally decorative title border depicting a gallant scene. ? Only lightly spotted. Recent full-calf with gilt decoration to spine and gilt fillets to boards.

Alberti, Leon Battista.
How to Do It: Guides to Good Living for Renaissance Italians. Chicago 2000. - Gamba 1189 (Anmerkung). - Only lightly spotted. Recent full-calf with gilt decoration to spine and gilt fillets to boards.

Bordone, Benedetto (1460-1539)
Libro Di Benedetto Bordone Nel Qual Si Ragiona De Tutte L'Isole Del Mondo?
|
Aldus for Federico Toresano, 1528. ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS TO CONTAIN DELINEATIONS OF THE NEW WORLD Folio, with 3 double-page woodcut maps, double-page woodcut town plan of Venice and 108 woodcut maps and town plans in text. Contemporary calf gilt binding with Aldus tooled insignia; gilt edges References: Lloyd Arnold Brown, The World Encompassed, exh. cat. (Baltimore, 1952), n. 83; Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World (London, 1983), n. 59; Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 11. The isolario, or book of islands, was a popular genre that had first appeared in manuscript examples by Cristoforo Buondelmonte dating from the early fifteenth century, then in printed versions by Bartolommeo dalli Sonetti from the late 1400s. More so than its predecessors, the isolario first published in 1528 by Venice-based cartographer Benedetto Bordone was formative for Renaissance geographical conceptions. Bordone's early sixteenth-century treatment of the island-atlas theme greatly expanded upon the earlier works, augmenting the conventional focus on the eastern Mediterranean to encompass maps of other parts of Europe and the world, stretching as far as the Indian Ocean, the African coastline and the New World. Bordone's maps of islands in the West Indies, although schematic in their outlines (perhaps reflecting the author's training as a miniaturist as opposed to a cartographer), were among the first nautical charts of these regions to become widely available, and his map of "La gran citta di Temistican" (pictured above)--modern-day Mexico City--brought the former Aztec capital before the eyes of curious European viewers and recorded for posterity its form prior to the destruction wrought by Cortez. Equally important is the map of the eastern coast of North America, which includes labels for "Terra de lavoratore, " thought to represent a section of the modern-day Atlantic coast of Canada, and "p[ar]te del mondo novo"--"part of the New World"--w

Title within Colines's fine woodcut "Quadrivium" border & crible initials. 4 p.l., 24 leaves. Folio, attractive antique panelled calf (title a little soiled). Paris: S. de Colines, 1528. First edition of this very rare book; it "is one of the best of the sixteenth-century treatises on the mediaeval proportion. It follows the Boethian treatment, as seen also in the work of Bradwardin."!Smith, Rara Arithmetica, p. 157. "Fernel (1497-1558), before making a name for himself in medicine, was first attracted by the mathematical sciences, as evidenced by his first three publications -- of which this is the third, and all three of which were issued by Simon de Colines: De Proportionibus was preceded by Monalosphaerium, 1527, and Cosmotheoria, 1528. Fernel received his M.D. degree in 1530 and became a very influential physician through his numerous writings; he became physician to Catherine de Medicis, whose barrenness he cured, and eventually was appointed chief physician to King Henri II."!Schreiber 35. Its name indicates what is supposed to be its unifying element: accounts of happenings in ancient Rome. Each story has a title suggesting a virtue or vice and an appendix pointing to a moral. The first collection, in Latin, was probably the work of an English Franciscan about 1330. Continuously expanded, it exerted a strong influence upon later writers such as Chaucer and Gower and enjoyed a considerable vogue well into the 16th century...Some stories, e.g. AtalantaOs Race, derive from Greek myth; others, e.g. Androcles and the Lion, from late classical times. Several come fromAleandrian romance, Appolonius of Tyre being a notable example. Jewish and Indian lore, Christian writers like Geoffrey of Monmouth and local legends also provided a rich quarry.O [CassellOs Ency. of World Lit.] #11;Anton Sorg (c1430-1493) was among the earliest of the Augsburg printers. Strasburg, 1528.

De Sym[m]etria partium in rectis formis hu[m]anorum corporum, Libri in latinum conversi.
|
DÜRER'S HIGHLY IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCIENCE OF ART, ANATOMY, AND THE THEORY OF HUMAN PROPORTIONS. FIRST LATIN EDITIONS IN THE VERY INFLUENTIAL TRANSLATION OF CAMERARIUS OF ALL BOOKS OF VIER BÜCHER VON MENSCHLICHER PROPORTION (Nuremberg, 1528), which 'should, of course, accompany each other, but [because of their different dates of publication] are often found apart and separately bound' (Fairfax Murray). Joachim Camerarius (the elder), a devoted classical scholar, translated both texts, after Dürer's friend Willibald Pirckheimer had abandoned his attempt. Camerarius' translation ensured the popularity of Dürer's theoretical work throughout Europe. 'Without Camerarius' translation Dürer's writings would not have achieved widespread influence in Europe ... His theory of proportions was not only a part of artistic discourse, but - now in the language of the learned - could become part of European scientific literature. Without Camerarius' work Michelangelo would never have seen the Proportionslehre' (translated from the Dürer catalogue, 1971).'As early as his Wanderjahre Dürer had come to appreciate the works of Mantegna and other Italian artists. He wished to learn more of the artistic and philosophical rediscoveries of the Italian Renaissance ... Moreover he had become convinced that the new art must be based upon science - in particular, upon mathematics, as the most exact, logical, and graphically constructive of the sciences. It was this realisation that led him to the scientific work for which he was, in his lifetime, as celebrated as for his art. He decided to travel to Italy and in 1494 left his wife in Nuremberg and set off on foot to visit Venice.'On his return to Nuremberg in 1495, Dürer began a serious study of mathematics and of the theory of art as derived from works handed down from antiquity, especially Euclid's Elements and the De architectura of Vitruvius ... Most importantly, however, this period marked the beginning of Dürer's experiments with scientific perspective and mathematical proportion ... In 1505-1507 Dürer returned to Venice. PTOLOMEO, Claudio
Almagestum seu magnae constructionis mathematicae opus plane divinum.
|
Venecia, Lucas Antonio de Giunta, 1528. En folio. (6), 143 folios. Procedencia: I: Inscripción en tinta en portada “Liber Thomae Corsaeri presbyteri oxonii... emptus 4 die november Anno Dni 1540”; II: Library of the Earls of Macclesfield (tampón).Referencias: Sander 5971; Sarton I, p. 272; Adams P2214 “THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE FIRST LATIN VERSION OF PTOLEMY’S ALMAGEST TO BE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE ORIGINAL GREEK TEXT” (Norman). The translation was made in 1451 by the Byzantine scholar George of Trebizon (1396-1472). It was edited by the Renaissance mathematician Luca Gaurico (1476-1558), and dedicated to Pope Nicholas V (1447-55), who had commissioned the work. The present edition of Ptolemy’s Almagest was the most important of his astronomical and mathematical works; it covers every aspect of theoretical mathematical astronomy, and was the entire basis of all astronomy up to the publication of works by Tycho Brahe and Kepler. The Almagest is an encyclopaedia of astronomical knowledge which established astronomy as a mathematical discipline. It contains an elaborate theory of the planets, the discovery of the second inequality of the moon’s motion, the determination of the distance of the moon, an exposition of spherical and plane trigonometry and an account of the construction and use of astronomical instruments. Very good copy. Seventeenth century English calf.

ALBERTI, Leon Battista.
|
Venice, Giovanni Antonio et Fratelli da Sabbio ad instantia de Nicolo & Francesco Librari al Dolphin, 1528. A combined edition of the Ecatomfila and the Deifira, Alberti’s two dialogues on love. They originally appeared separately in 1471, probably the first works of literature by a living author printed in Italian. They treat the vagaries of love from different perspectives. In the Ecatomfila, a woman, expert in matters of love, counsels her youthful listeners on how to secure and keep love. The ideal lover is prudent, modest, and virtuous; above all, he is a man of letters. In the Deifira Filarco counsels Pallimacro, hopelessly in love with Deifira, on the dangers of love and on how the humanist may experience the intensity of love as a young man without abandoning his literary and artistic pursuits. The emblem of the vase of flames – the symbol of love, carnal and spiritual – occurs on both Italian and French renaissance bindings. Anthony Hobson cites examples of its use in Humanists and Bookbinders, Cambridge, 1989, pp. 165-166. See also two examples in Breslauer, cat. 110, nos. 23 and 25.Contemporary owner’s initials at foot of title “F.M.S.I.B.”. From the library of L.A. BRUNFELS ( Otto ), ed.
Precationes Biblicae …
|
FIRST EDITION, the title-page printed in red and black within chiaroscuro woodcut border, woodcut on A8v followed by (181) pages of text and colophon all within wide woodcut borders of children playing, hunting and satirical scenes, trophies, grotesques, plants, animals, insects, etc., attributed to Hans Weiditz, wanting the final leaf which is blank except for printer's device, leaves (8), 91, small 8vo, 19C polished calf, gilt lettered spine, edges gilt, with the armorial bookplate of the bibliographer and author Percy L. Babington and the booklabel of T. Connolly, bookseller, Dublin : the last three leaves skilfully repaired and the upper hinge weak, but still a very good copy of a rare book. Adams P 2071 : FM only. "One of the earliest publications of Brunfels and very little known." - Fairfax Murray 100. A collection of biblical texts suitable for use as prayers collected by Brunfels (1488-1534), devoted follower of Luther and a leading botanical authority considered by Linnaeus to be one of the founders of modern botany. A rare book and one of the earliest examples of an illustrated protestant prayer book. In one of the borders is represented a fox in monkish garb selling indulgences to several geese with a treasure chest and papal standard behind : an excellent example of early anti-catholic satire in the art of book illustration. It appeared in German translation in 1531 as "Biblisch Bettbuchlein dar altvatter" and other translations followed. In England Robert Redman published it in 1535 as "Prayers of the Byble". Weiditz (c.1495-c.1536), sometimes known as 'The Petrarch Master" for his woodcut illustrations to Petrarch's "De remediis utriusque fortunae", also illustrated Brunfels' Herbarium. In 1520 he was probably studying at Durer's wookshop.

|
(10) pp., 73 ff., including title printed in red and black, with 2 full-page and 3 double-page maps and many maps in the text. Bound in 19th-century quarter vellum and marbled paper over boards. Edges of title restored, gutter of initial and final leaves reinforced, single wormtrack through first 9 leaves, occasionally touching printed surface; light handsoiling throughout, but maps in strong impressions, overall good. Rare first edition. The isolario, or !book of islands,' was a cartographic form introduced and developed in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. Like the portolano, or pilot-book, to which it was related, it had its origin in the Mediterranean, as an illustrated guide for travelers in the Aegean Archipelago and the Levant. Bordone's Isolario was the second isolario to be printed and the first to give prominence to the transatlantic discoveries. Skelton quotes Almagia as saying that it is, in fact, "the earliest complete work of its kind to have been produced by the printing-press in Italy or anywhere else."The Isolario is divided into three books, devoted respectively to the !islands and peninsulas' of the western ocean, to the Mediterranean, and to islands of the Indian Ocean and the Far East. While this order corresponds very roughly to that of Ptolemy, it gives conspicuous priority to the discoveries across the Atlantic. Besides a page of diagrams illustrating the construction of a circular world map and windroses of !ancient' and !modern type,' there are three general maps: Europe, the Aegean, and an oval world map. Scattered through the text, in the appropriate places, are 107 small maps, plans or views including a nearly three-quarter page plan of Mexico City before the conquest of Cortez-which qualifies because it is an island.According to Cortazzi, in his Isles of Gold Antique Maps of Japan: "In 1528 the Italian cartographer Benedetto Bordone (1460-1531) produced an atlas of islands printed in Italy by Nicolo d'Aristotle. In it he included a small map of an island which he called !Ciampagu,' presumably another version of Cipangu. This would seem to be the earliest European printed individual map of Japan" (p. 15).Bordone was a Paduan illuminator and wood-engraver who was apparently established at Venice by 1494. * Theatrum Orbis Terrarum facsimile edition edited by R.A. Skelton; see Harrisse, Bibliotheca americana vetustissima, no. 187; Sabin 6417; for the 1547 edition, see Mortimer, Italian, 82.

"His book on human proportions was prepared for the press after his death by his lifelong friend Willibad Pirkheimer, to whom Dürer had previously dedicated it, and it appeared in October 1528. The first and very rare edition is printed in Gothic type with identures and comprises 132 pages with signatures and many woodcuts in the text, some of them covering the entire page." Choulant-Franck 143. "Dürer's aesthetic rules are firmly based in the laws of optics -indeed, he even designed special mechanical instruments to aid in the attainment of beautiful form. He used the height of the human body as the basic unit of measurement and subdivided it linearly to reach a common denominator for construction of a unified artistic plan. This canon was not inviolable: Dürer himself modified it continually in an attempt to approximate more closely the canon of Vitruvius (which was also the canon most favoured by Leonardo)." Strasburg, 1528. (A la fin: Strasburg, Christian Egenolphen, 1528). - in-4. 52pp. n. ch. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

"His book on human proportions was prepared for the press after his death by his lifelong friend Willibad Pirkheimer, to whom Durer had previously dedicated it, and it appeared in October 1528. ... The first and very rare edition is printed in Gothic type with identures and comprises 132 pages with signatures and many woodcuts in the text, some of them covering the entire page." Choulant Franck 143. "Durer's aesthetic rules are firmly based in the laws of optics indeed, he even designed special mechanical instruments to aid in the attainment of beautiful form. He used the height of the human body as the basic unit of measurement and subdivided it linearly to reach a common denominator for construction of a unified artistic plan. This canon was not inviolable: Durer himself modified it continually in an attempt to approximate more closely the canon of Vitruvius (which was also the canon most favoured by Leonardo)." (DSB 4, 260). Stillwell, The awakening interest in science 622. Brunet 2, 914. Norman 666 (incomplete copy). Garrison Morton 149. First edition of Durer's book on human proportions. Illustrated by 136 woodcuts. Five leaves, without illustrations are missing. Norman 666 (had also an incomplete copy, lacking 6 leaves). Garrison Morton 149.
