POLYCRONICON [translated by John de Trevisa]
Southwark Peter Treveris at ye expences of John Reynes 1527, the 16th day of May RARE. First Illustrated Edition and only the third issuance of the book after the Caxton printing of 1482 and the Wynken de Worde printing of 1495. With the exception of the woodcut of the musical notation on n5r, which first appeared in the printing of 1495 (and was the earliest printed musical notation in an English book), ALL THE WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS APPEAR HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME. Double column, black letter, zylographic title printed in red between two parts of a large woodcut block printed in red and black (Hodnett 2489, state 2), the upper portion featuring the royal arms, a portrait of Henry VIII, and the arms of London, the larger lower portion showing St. George; full page woodcut of a battle on z6v, 6 smaller woodcuts in the text (one repeated), woodcut musical notation on n5r, several 10-line and smaller woodcut initials. John ReynesÕ printerÕs mark, colophon with hunting scenes. Folio (273 x 190 mm), handsomely bound in full brown pigskin gilt, with gilt central device of the Earl of Warwick on each cover, edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Fo. CCCxlvi A very handsome copy of this rare and desirable book. Complete but for the title page and colophon leaf supplied in very skillful facsimile, first twelve and last eight leaves skillfully repaired in the margins, slightly affecting text in a few places, occasional minor dust soiling, some leaves possibly supplied from another copy. A very attractive, wide-margined copy. RARE AND IMPORTANT. Only the third printing of one of the most important pieces of early English historical prose. Higden's POLYCRONICON, a world history from the Creation to 1360 A.D., was translated by Trevisa at the command of Thomas, Earl of Berkeley (d. 1361). The work draws on over 40 sources, and synthesizes a continuous diachronic and multicultural history, beginning with the Biblical account of the Creation and moving through the history of the Semitic, Hellenic, Roman, and medieval-European cultures. It served as a model for innumerable later histories, both universal and localized. The POLYCRONICON was Caxton's most ambitious printing project. It is his longest book in terms of page count, and the second-longest in terms of word count (after the GOLDEN LEGEND of 20 November 1483). It is also Caxton's most ambitious work as an editor and a writer; for Caxton significantly revised the extant English translation of the POLYCRONICON, updating its terminology considerably; and he also authored an original history of England to serve as Book 8 of the text--a writing effort which stands as Caxton's greatest achievement as an author. This printing is the third, after CaxtonÕs original in 1482.

(Piccoli restauri antichi su carta azzurra a risarcire i fori dovuti all’acidità dell’inchiostro).

KENT. Quitclaim of land at Hawkhurst and Cranbrook, 1527

Quitclaim [formal release of title] of land at Hawkhurst and Cranbrook, from James Weynes of Hawkhurst to Gervase Mapllysden of Rolvynden
19 Henry VIII [1527]. Vellum deed, 9½ x 5 inches, seal tag (without seal), a few tiny holes. A few words neatly underlined. With a full typed transcription and some historical notes identifying place names. An attractive deed, issued in the year Henry VIII began negotiations with the Pope for a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. “Dated the fifth day of July in the nineteenth Year of the reign of our lord Henry the eighth of England and France King defender of the faith and lord of Ireland.” This document is only two years after Henry began to describe himself as ‘the Eighth’; unitl then he used only his name, like all previous English sovereigns. At this time he was still only ‘lord’ of Ireland; later he assumed the title King of Ireland. It is of particular interest to find part of the land consisting of two separate one-third parts acquired from two brothers, both described as heirs of James a Melle. This situation arose from the Kentish system of inheritance known as gavelkind, by which estates did not pass to the eldest son but were divided equally among all the sons.

MARSCHALCK, Haug, (H. Zoller, 1489-1535)].

Miriam Usher Chrisman in ihrem Artikel: Haug Marschalck. Lay Supporter of the Reform stellt diese Zuschreibung stark in Frage: "All three pamphlets support the Zwinglian interpretation of the Eucharist against the Lutheran doctrine of the real presence. Although the writer paraphrases the Bible, he cites it directly only rarely. In the pamphlets written after 1524, Marschalck was almost incapable of writing a paragraph without a direct scriptural reference; the reference was always cited, often in the text. In one case, Wer gern wolt wissen, fol C2v, the anonymous writer quotes from the scripture in Latin. This does not occur in Marschalck's work; indeed, since he was selfeducated, he probably did not read Latin. Adolf Laube identified Schnewyl as a Strasbourg cleric (private communication)". Schottenloher, Philipp Ulhart. Ein Augsburger Winkeldrucker (1921), Nr. 163; VD 16, M-1108; Pegg, (GB), 3617; Kuczynski 2403; M. Usher Chrisman, Haug Marschalck. Lay Supporter of the Reform, in: Fix/Karant-Nunn, Germania illustrata (1992), 61. First edition. Usually attributed to the Memmingen born mercenary soldier and paymaster of the imperial troops quartered in Augsburg, Haug Marschalck, the authorship of the present and two other pamphlets published with the name of Johann Schnewyl is questioned by Miriam Usher Chrisman: "All three pamphlets support the Zwinglian interpretation of the Eucharist against the Lutheran doctrine of the real presence. Although the writer paraphrases the Bible, he cites it directly only rarely. In the pamphlets written after 1524, Marschalck was almost incapable of writing a paragraph without a direct scriptural reference; the reference was always cited, often in the text. This does not occur in Marschalck's work; indeed, since he was selfeducated, he probably did not read Latin. Adolf Laube identified Schnewyl as a Strasbourg cleric (private communication)". - The large title woodcut illustratin the sin of idolatry depict the two golden calves and the armies of Beth-El and Dan facing each other. - Waterstain in upper half, lower corner slightly dump-soiled. - Modern boards.

Sursum corda.

[FOLENGO, Teofilo (1491-1544)].

Chaos del Tri per Uno.
3 Teile in 1 Bd. Kl.-8vo (156 x 101 mm). [124] Bl. [a4, B4, c-z4, &4, (A)-G4]. Massimo Zaggia, Una contraffazione editoriale folenghiana, in: Studi e problemi di critica testuale, Bd. XLV, Oktober 1992, S. 83-89. Stellenweise etwas fleckig, zwei Blatt (i3-4) im Aussensteg angerändert. Editio princeps of this curious allegorical work by the Mantua born Gerolimo or Teofilo Folengo otherwise known as Merlino Cocajo. - Referring to the identification of the editio princeps of this work see Massimo Zaggia, Una contraffazione editoriale folenghiana, in: Studi e problemi di critica testuale, vol. XLV, Octobre 1992, p. 83-89). The book, written in verse and prose and in mingled Latin, Italian, and macaronic speech, sets forth allegorically the anthor's own previous heretical leanings and finally states his confession of faith and the "Moschaea", which in three books of Macaronic distichs relates, somewhat after the fashion of the "Batrachiomachia" as well as of the chivalrous romances, the victory of the ants over the flies. The first work of its kind was published in 1490 as Maccharonea by Tifi Odasi. The coarse buffoonery of Folengo's Chaos of the Tripartite Man is often relieved by touches of genuine poetry, as well as by graphic descriptions and acute criticisms of men and manners. Its macaronic style is rendered peculiarly perplexing to the foreigner by the frequent introduction of words and phrases from the Mantuan patois. It influenced François Rabelais' writings and preludes the Italian mock-heroic poem of the seventeenth century. - Old owner's entry in lower margin of title, somewhat (dump) stained, two leaves (i3-4) remargined, on the whole a well-preserved and complete copy of this rarity. - Early 19th century half calf (upper joint of front cover worn at head).

Several chapters prepared by him were published as separate treaties, the most famous being his ‘Vier Bucher von menschlicher proportion’, which appreared in 1528. Durer’s exertions with the theory of proportions resulted in the most extensive of all such undertalings by artist and mark the climax in the development of his theory. HIGDEN, Ranulf, John Trevisa and William Caxton.

Polycronycon.
Southwark. Peter Treveris for John Reynes. 1527, 16th May. . Folio. [398 leaves; ff. (50), cccxlvi, (1)]. Printed in Black Letter, double column, 44 lines per page. Woodcut title page printed in red and black from five blocks, comprising crown; banner with medallion portrait of Henry VIII, the royal arms and the arms of the City of London in red; elaborate calligraphic title in red; large vignette of St. George and the Dragon; John Reynes' printer's mark in red [McKerrow 55], woodcut portraits of kings, queens and knights from six blocks with repetitions throughout [Hodnett 2490; 2492 - 2496], woodcut musical notation depicting diapason on n5 recto, full page woodcut battle scene with double borders depicting English and French armies on z6 verso [Hodnett 2491], colophon with elaborate woodcut border depicting bear hunting with dogs [McKerrow and Ferguson 12], final woodcut with rubrication on verso of colophon - an earlier version of that for the title [McKerrow 61], woodcut historiated and decorative initials throughout. Full late sixteenth or early seventeenth century speckled calf, boards with double rules in blind, banded spine with gilt decoration in six compartments, red speckled edges. . COMPLETE COPY OF THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION after the editions of Caxton in 1482 and Wynkyn de Worde in 1495. Originally composed in Latin by Ranulf Higden, a Benedictine monk, the Polycronycon was a history of the world from the Creation to 1342. At the time of composition and over the course of the next two centuries, Higden's work was enormously popular, providing important source material on the Roman world, the Norman Conquest, the relationship of British history to a wider European context as well as geography and science (the work is also an important Arthurian source). The Polycronycon, which was continually revised, most importantly by John Malvern, is known from a large number of extant manuscripts before an English translation was commissioned by Thomas, Lord Berkeley from John Trevisa which was completed on 18th April 1387. Trevisa added a 'Descrypcion of Englonde', the first such undertaking in the vernacular and updated the history to 1377. It was Trevisa's translation that was first published by Caxton in 1482, with Caxton's own continuation of the history to 1460 and a table of contents. Wynkyn de Worde reprinted Caxton's edition in 1495 with a new setting and preface and it is de Worde's edition that Treveris followed, adding all but one of the woodcuts (that for the musical notation on n5 recto, the earliest printed depiction of musical notation in this country). The woodcuts themselves are important, not only for the development of the illustrated title-page, but also in the development of a system of mise en page that breaks up large elements of text with vignette illustrations, also providing illustrations hors texte that elucidate the work (such as the battle scene on z6 verso). Dibdin identifies the artist for the woodcuts as John Nesbit, whereas Hodnett suggests that most of the woodcuts are by the same English artist, leaving him unnamed. The final woodcut, the earlier version of the title-page from three blocks, is, unusually, here found rubricated.' perhaps the most magnificent title-page, of which the early annals of English printing can boast.' (Dibdin, Ames' Typographical Antiquities).
