DURER'S THEORETIC MASTERWORK, this OCourse on the Art of Measurement with Compass and RulerO formulates a comprehensive and mathematically based method for the realistic depiction of objects in space. One of the earliest printed works on perspective, the Underweysung is the first presentation of the subject in German. The principles articulated in the Underweysung formed the foundation of aesthetic dogma for over 300 years. The treatise presents a wide range of geometric subjects, with the basics of linear, plane, and solid geometry laying a foundation for practical applications for architecture and art, including the construction of columns and the rendering of alphabets. Contemporary stamped and tooled calf binding, rebacked retaining the original spine. Deluxe copy with thicker cotton rag paper and wide margins retained at the bottom. Gilt gauffred page edges, raised bands. Collated in sets of 8 leaves, begins with set 56, runs through 119 (thus 512 leaves total). Second volume of Bomberg's second Biblia Rabbinica, known as the first Jewish Rabbinic Bible (Mikraot Gedolot, TaNaKh), based on Jacob ben Chaim's Masoretic codex (see Darlow and Moule #5085). Follows Bomberg's famous layout design- vocalized, cantillized, partially versified Hebrew Biblical text in the center, surrounded on the outside by the classical commentaries of Rashi and extensive Masoretic notes, as well as several other classical commentators. These additional sources include: David Kimchi "RaDaK" (Later Prophets), Ibn Ezra (Later Prophets, Writings), and Saadia ben Yosef Gaon (Daniel). Decorative title pages the beginning of the volume (Later Prophets) and at the beginning of Writings, illustrated with a repeating woodcut engraving depicting a cutaway of a traditional Temple design. Both title pages mention publisher and publishing place written in Rashi script, but no date imprint. End of last Biblical text page contains a complete imprint with date in Hebrew block script (286, or 1526 CE). Book headings engraved with the traditional Bomberg design. Second volume only, begins directly with Isaiah, and continues through the rest of Later Prophets and Writings (the first volume contained the Pentateuch and the Early Prophets- Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings). Writings opens with a short poem and a paragraph by Ibn Ezra. Several appendices at end: first, the Mesorah Gedolah, an extensive alphabetical index of Biblical Hebrew words and their occurrences throughout the TaNaKh. Following appendix contains variances (mostly in cantillation) of the Mesorah (transmitted tradition) on the writing of the TaNaKh. Final appendices are: Kria and Shaar ha-Neginut (variances on public reading customs). Jacob ben Chaim's name appears at the beginning of the introduction to the first appendix. Future reprints of this edition also contain b. Chaim's name here, but will omit it in their frontispieces and prefaces, due to b. Chaim's conversion to Christianity and exile from the Jewish community of Venice, for whom Bomberg produced the Mikraot Gedolot. Unlike later editions, this printing does not contain the Targum Yerushalmi. Biblical text in Hebrew block script, commentaries and appendices in Hebrew Rashi script. Overall very clean interior, meticulously sharp and clear lettering of a genuine original Bomberg edition. Anton Zimmermann war Pfarrer zu Teuchern bei Weißenfels in Thüringen, immatrikulierte sich am 18. Juni 1519 in Wittenberg und trat nach seinem Examen 1521 das Pfarramt 1523 an, wurde wegen seiner Sympathie für die lutherische Theologie und vor allem wegen seiner in der vorliegenden Schrift verbreiteten Höllenfahrtslehre im Jahre 1526 von seinem Amte durch einen Erlass Herzog Georgs von Sachsen suspendiert. "Wenn Zimmermann erwähnt wird, dann immer wegen seiner Theorie der Höllenfahrt Jesu Christi. .. Der Dogmenhistoriker Johann August Dietelmair hat 1741 auf die theologiegeschichtliche Bedeutung Zimmermanns aufmerksam gemacht, ihn als ersten Vertreter der Strafleidenstheorie der Höllenfahrt Jesu bezeichnet (qui primus inter nostrates hanc sententiam portentosam publico scripto propugnauerat). Diese Tradition war von Nikolaus von Kues ausgegangen, wurde über Jacob Faber Stapulensis an Martin Luther weitergegeben. Luther hat 1519-1521 in seiner Zweiten Psalmenvorlesung vor allem an einer Stelle (zu Psalm 16,10) behauptet, daß die Passion Jesu über das Kreuz hinaus eine Fortsetzung in der Hölle fand, wo der Erlöser die Pein der Verdammten auszustehen hatte; denn die Christgläubigen mußten vollständig von Sünde und Tod (durch den Kreuzestod), aber auch von Hölle und Teufel (durch die Höllenfahrt) erlöst werden. Diesen Grundgedanken haben sich unter seinen damaligen Zuhörern nicht nur Zimmermann, sondern u. a. auch Johann Aepin, der 1518 bis 1520 in Wittenberg eingeschrieben war, zu eigen gemacht und in Predigten und Druckschriften veröffentlicht. Beide sind zu Urhebern theologischer Kontroversen geworden" (BBKL XIX, 1581-87). He also establishes standard rules for spelling and syntax. The work was frequently reprinted throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, but this first edition was apparently seen through the press by Bembo himself. Besonders die in großen Teilen erhaltene Kirchenausstattung von St. Nikolai zeugt davon. Jedoch war ihre historische Gestalt sowie die der weiteren ehemals 15 Kirchen und Kapellen der Stadt mit ihren 207 Altarstellen für die Zeit vor 1525 bisher völlig unbekannt. Man hatte lediglich eine Vorstellung von reich ausgestatteten Altären, die dem reformatorischen »Bildersturm« zum Opfer fielen und folglich nicht erhalten sind. Trotz einer mageren Überlieferungslage in Bezug auf die Bildkunst der Altäre, untersuchte der Autor das vorhandene Material erneut: Und zwar mit einer Methode, die auch das erhaltene Werk als Realquelle in Anspruch nimmt. Die Analyse von Werkmerkmalen zusammen mit einer gleich laufenden Durchdringung der örtlichen Geschichte förderte so die eigentliche Werkgeschichte des Objekts im Einzelnen wie des Werkkomplexes im Ganzen zu Tage, wodurch die Rekonstruktion der genannten Kirchenausstattungen mit überraschender Plausibilität gelingen konnte. Brunet décrit une édition proche de celle-ci, placée à la suite de L'Amant rendu cordelier à l'observance d'amours (Guillaume Nyverd, v. 1525), poème que l'on a longtemps attribué, tout comme cet Amant rendu par force dont il semble être le modèle, à Martial d'Auvergne. L'exemplaire Rothschild, que Picot date de 1525 environ, présente des variantes : le titre est disposé comme le nôtre sur trois lignes et comporte les mêmes césures (""Lamant re[n]du / par force au cou=/vent de tristesse""), mais le bois gravé, différent, est entouré de quatre fragments de bordures dont une seule est identique à celle qui clôt notre volume. The Prose has been described as not only one of the earliest histories of Italian literature but also a manifesto promoting an "ideal language", one which could represent the Renaissance ideal of equilibrium and classical beauty. Composed as a dialogue set in Venice from the 10th to the 12th of December the Prose is divided into three books. The first begins with a comparison of the origins of Italian language and literature to that of Provence concluding with a profile of what a literary language should be. The critical analysis of the second book is way beyond the usual scope of the humanistic tradition and works with problems of style, metrics and diction drawing from the major Trecento models. The third book draws from these models again to observe grammatical problems. He arrived in Mexico in 1554, following the pioneering period of the famous twelve original Franciscans, among whom was Motolinia. Mendieta began writing his chronicle in 1571, finishing it in 1596. He died in Mexico City on May 10, 1604. Mendieta wrote at a time when many eyewitnesses of the initial contact between Indians and Europeans wee still alive; he utilized their information. He also drew not only on the works of Motolinia, but on those by Andres de Olmos, Bernardino de Sahagun, and others in the archives of the Convent of San Francisco. He attempted purposefully to be an historian, and his work shows a logical organization not found in Motolinia. Mendietaa!!s emHistoria EclesiA!stica Indiana/em is considered to be a major ethnohistorical source. It remained undiscovered until 1860. The emHistoria/em was unpublished until 1870, when it was issued in Mexico City by Joaquin Garcia Icazbelceta. This bulky quarto tome was reissued in a much more handy four-volume edition in 1945. The entire work is divided into five books and each book subdivided into chapters. The 1870 edition has a general table of contents at the beginning and an index at the end. The table of Contents in the 1945 edition is distributed at the end of each volume, with the index to the whole after the text of the final volume. Garcia Icazbalceta's introduction in printed in both editions. A biobibliographical study, it provides a brief and accurate account of the author and a penetrating critical evaluation of the work and it sources. ""The project of preparing a complete Latin translation of the hippocratic corpus was undertaken by Marcus Fabius Calvus (ca. 1440-1527) of Ravenna toward the end of the first decade of the sixteenth century. Condition rare pour cet ouvrage que l'on rencontre le plus souvent rogné. Ici, le bel encadrement architectural est non seulement intact, mais aéré. Quant au papier, un vergé de qualité, il a conservé sa fraîcheur originelle, si agréable au toucher et à l'ouïe. Brunet décrit une édition proche de celle-ci, placée à la suite de L'Amant rendu cordelier à l'observance d'amours (Guillaume Nyverd, v. 1525), poème que l'on a longtemps attribué, tout comme cet Amant rendu par force dont il semble être le modèle, à Martial d'Auvergne. L'exemplaire Rothschild, que Picot date de 1525 environ, présente des variantes : le titre est disposé comme le nôtre sur trois lignes et comporte les mêmes césures ("Lamant re[n]du / par force au cou=/vent de tristesse"), mais le bois gravé, différent, est entouré de quatre fragments de bordures dont une seule est identique à celle qui clôt notre volume. Cette édition, dit Picot, "est différente de celle qui a été reproduite par M. A. This edition has a handsome, single-unit woodcut title-border incorporating pillars, stags, vines, and cherubs. The text is in fraktur, of course. The Prose has been described as not only one of the earliest histories of Italian literature but also a manifesto promoting an "ideal language", one which could represent the Renaissance ideal of equilibrium and classical beauty. Composed as a dialogue set in Venice from the 10th to the 12th of December the Prose is divided into three books. The first begins with a comparison of the origins of Italian language and literature to that of Provence concluding with a profile of what a literary language should be. The critical analysis of the second book is way beyond the usual scope of the humanistic tradition and works with problems of style, metrics and diction drawing from the major Trecento models. The third book draws from these models again to observe grammatical problems. Of the different views on the Italian language current at the beginning of the 16th century it was Bembo's which won the most favour and continued to prevail through the efforts of Lionardo Salviati and the Accademia della Crusca. Important mémoire sur le développement des pêcheries françaises à Terre-Neuve et dans les îles de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon depuis la prise de possession de Terre-Neuve par le florentin Jean Verrazini au nom de Francois Ier en 1525 puis l’établissement de Jacques Cartier jusqu’au traité de Paris en 1814. Cette étude décrit la situation géographique des îles du Golfe du Saint-Laurent, en évoquant les premières explorations effectuées par des pêcheurs basques : « On rapporte que ce fut d’un pilote biscayen que Christophe Colomb reçut les premières notions sur l’existence d’un nouveau monde », et le partage de ces territoires entre colons français et anglais. La pêche à la morue se développe sous la protection d’Henri IV, plusieurs arrêts et ordonnances favorisent la pêche côtière jusqu’au traité d’Utrecht en 1713 qui donne l’Acadie aux Anglais. Les Français se rassemblent alors sur l’île du Cap Breton (île Royale), jusqu’à ce que les guerres de Succession d’Autriche puis de Sept ans ne les confinent aux îles de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon. « Mais ces débris quelques faibles qu’ils fussent étaient encore pour la France d’un grand intérêt ». Vers 1765, le produit de la pêche est évalué à 300 000 quintaux de morue. De nouveaux privilèges de pêches sont arrêtés pour combattre la concurrence anglaise. Puis c’est la guerre d’Indépendance américaine avec les premières victoires des Anglais et le traité de 1783 qui rétrocède ces îles à la France avec possibilité de les fortifier. La progression de l’industrie de la pêche est à nouveau interrompue pendant la Révolution. Les îles tombent à nouveau aux mains de la Grande-Bretagne, puis sont définitivement rendues à la France par le traité de Paris de 1814. Le mémoire conclut que la pêche française peut et doit redevenir aussi importante qu’avant la guerre : « Nous possédons les mêmes établissements que nous avions alors ; nous avons le droit de pêche dans les mêmes parages, et l’abord nous est permis sur les mêmes côtes, mais après 25 années d’interruption, la générosité actuelle de nos gens de mer et de nos commerçants, a besoin peut-être que le temps et le maintien de la paix rendent à leurs travaux et à leurs spéculations cette direction utile dont ils ont été si long temps écartés. Reprinted in a collective volume in 1530 § The Opuscula is a collection of commentaries on Aristotle's De animalium motu, De animalium incessu, and Mechanica (with the text), and an extract from Proclus' commentary on Plato's Timaeus. The most important to an early owner was apparently the Mechanica as this is the title used to identify the volume lettered on the lower page edges. The Mechanica has woodcut diagrams illustrating mechanical principles: remarkably, the lever is illustrated by a pair of dental forceps. The other tracts in the Opuscula are on animal motion; and the physiology of sex, considered both physically and psychologically. Niccolò Leonico Tomeo was born in Venice and studied in Padua. He is credited with giving the first formal lectures on Plato at Padua in 1497, and from the Greek text rather than from a Latin translation. Beautifully printed with some fine initials, these two works were evidently bound together close to the time of printing in a typical Venetian binding of blind-stamped morocco. The binding is well preserved with only minor repairs and has an amusing nineteenth-century provenance having belonged to George Eliot's Dr Lydgate. Literature: M. E. The first two volumes (of five) of the magnificent Aldine Galen, which, by publishing in one place all the known Greek texts of Galen, marked a new era in both medical and philological scholarship. The collection's five folio volumes, the climax of nearly 100 years of active scholarship, represent the largest single body of text issued by the Aldine press, which had by then passed into the hands of Aldus Manutius's father-in-law Andreas Asulanus, Aldus having died in 1515 before he could fulfil his long-held desire to issue a new edition of Galen. Superbes Exemplar der Erstausgabe der wichtigen humanistischen Programmschrift In seinem, im Juli 1525 in Basel vollendeten Traktat über die Macht der menschlichen Sprache - und ihren Missbrauch - reflektiert und unter anderem auch die Ansicht äussert, dass Ciceros glänzende Sprachkunst seine charakterlichen Schwächen nicht vergessen machen könne. Ein bedeutendes Motiv für die Niederschrift dürfte Erasmus' unvergleichliche Kenntnisse der antiken Literaturen, speziell der griechischen, gewesen sein, die er hier in nahezu idealer Weise ausbreiten konnte. Tatsächlich ist die Zahl von angeführten Exempeln, Anekdoten und Zitaten noch beeindruckender als in anderen seiner gelehrten Werke. Many of the volumes in Turner's library were enriched with sketches, drawings and etchings by his wife and daughters, who were all pupils of the watercolourist John Sell Cotman, who settled near the family's home on Turner's inducement in 1812. The autographs in the present collection are written on slips of paper cut out from letters and other documents and mounted on the leaves of the album. 40 of the 60 autographs are embellished with a washed pen and ink cartouche with figures, landscapes and ornamental designs, mainly of emblematical character. These are all unsigned, but they are probably done by members of the artistic Turner family. Most of Turner's library, including 150 volumes of manuscripts and letters was sold in 1853. The remainder, including a staggering 40.000 letters was sold at auction after his death, in 1859. (2), 103 (=203), (15, 8), lf. 105 (=205) - 267, (1) lvs. Collected edition of three works by classical authors, Velleius Paterculus first published here in Italy. Both Justinus and Nepos are here in an edition of "considerable authority" (Dibdin), based on the 1522 Aldus edition, with corrections. Ad 1: In trogi Pompei historiam epitomen by Justinus. Justinus collected, as he writes in his preface, the most important and interesting passages from the Historiae Philippicae by Pompeius Trogus, a work which is now lost. In the 3rd century Justinus summarized this voluminous work of 44 books, and his epitome was extremely popular in the Middle Ages. Trogus's work originally concentrated on the rise and history of the Macedonian monarchy, but Justinus digressed and elaborated to the history of the Roman empire. The work was first published in 1470, Venice. Ad 2: De vita excellentium imperatorum by Cornelius Nepos. Until 1569 the Vita were attributed to Aemylius Probus, but it is now generally accepted that the author is Cornelius Nepos (99-24 B.C.). Nepos was well acquainted with Cicero, Pomponius Atticus and Catullus. The present work, together with two biographies on Cato and Atticus, is all that is left from his writings. Nepos is the first biographer known by name, and he was also the first biographer to compare the Romans with foreigners. The work was first published at Venice, in 1471. Ad 3: Historiae Romanae duo volumina ad M. Vinici, um cos. pro generum Tib. caesaris by Velleius Paterculus (19 B.C.-31 A.D.). The Historiae is one of the most important documents on the age of Augustus and Tiberius. Beatus Rhenanus discovered the manuscript in the Alsatian Convent of Murbach in 1515, and he published the work in collaboration with Froben in 1520. The manuscript, returned to the convent after publication, is lost ever since. Part I of the Historiae deals with the history from early times, the Orient and Greece, to the fall of Carthage and Corinth in 146 B.C. Part II treats the period 146 B.C.-30 A.D., especially emphasizing the period marked by the death of Caesar (44 B.C.) and the death of Augustus (14 A.D.). As Velleius writes on the history of more recent times, his work becomes more and more detailed, and focuses on the history of the Roman empire in stead of universal history. The work consists of some rather interesting portraits of famous Romans, modelled after the Annales by Tacitus. The biographical interest of the author is expanded upon with two excursuses on history, including the most famous passages from his work on Roman colonization, and three excursuses on literary topics. The excessive flattery of especially Tiberius can be considered a counterbalance for the diatribes against Tiberius of Tacitus and Suetonius. Renouard's copy, from the libraries of Heber and Abdy.
