- Romae, Per Marcellum Silber, 1525Due parti legate in 8° (cm 12,5 x 18), legatura in piena pergamena,rimontata, cc (8), 242, (2 bianche), per la prima parte, con proprio frontespizio, con lieve integrazione al margine dx, dal titolo: "Summula caietana reuerendissimi domini cardinalis Sancti Xisti"; 104, per la seconda parte, con front. proprio, dal titolo:: "Ientacula Noui Testamenti cardinalis Sancti Xisti.". In tutto, tre frontespizi silografici in cornice allegorica, il primo con le armi cardinalizie dell'A. Il secondo con l'impresa del giglio fiorentino (l'opera, in prima edizione, è infatti "impensis nobilis viri domini iacobi de giunta florentini impresse"); il terzo nuovamente alle armi del De Vio; dati tipografici al colophon della prima opera, che reca altra impresa tipografica; ripetuta al colophon della seconda. Seguono Registro ed Errata. Il nome del revisore (Joannes Daniel) si ricava dal colophon. Esemplare completo in buone condizioni, firme di appartenenza coeve ai primi due frontespizi, radi marginalia; rifilato al margine superiore, con perdita sovente totale o parziale del numero della pagina. Prima edizione di questo celebre manuale per confessori (scritto nel 1523, messo all'Indice nel 1559) del cardinale Tommaso De Vio (1469-1534): che sopravvisse al Sacco di Roma, condannò Lutero, sancì la validità del matrimonio di Enrico Ottavo con Eleonora d'Aragona. L'A. enumera alfabeticamente innumerevoli peccati, e li gradua a seconda della gravità, suddividendoli in veniali o mortali, causa questi di scomunica. L'Excommunicatio occupa quasi metà del volume. Tra i casi trattati: Aborto; Adulterio; Coito con animali, Incesto; Meretricio; Sodomia; Apostasia; Scisma; Crudeltà eccessiva; Emissione di libelli infamanti; Ironia; Istrioni, qualora si facciano gioco della Fede o della Legge; l'Alchimia non è sempre "vitiosa", non è "illicita", se "sine fraude". Divinatio, Aruspicium, Auspicium, invece, sono sempre mortali, perchè richiedono l'invocazione e l'ausilio dei demoni, così come l'Incantatio, i Malefici, i Sortilegi, Eretici e Inquisitori; una parte importante occupa la Riforma luterana, contro la quale tanto si battè l'A.; una dozzina di pagine sono dedicate all'Usura. Einzige Ausgabe der Schrift des Predigers zu Jena, radikalen Theologen und Reformers Martin Reinhart aus dem fränkischen Eibelstadt über die der Ketzerei angeklagten Mönche "Peter von Onspach, Der welsche Doktor Johann Eckenfeldt und Der kleyn Jorg von Frickenhausen". Reinhart "wurde von Luther, auf Begehrten des Königs Christian, nach Dänemark gesandt das Evangelium zu verkünden. Der König berief ihn dann 1522 auf der Universität Kopenhagen zum Lehrer der Theologie, und er war dreist genug, in diesem Jahre ein Buch herauszugeben, in welchem er die babylonische Gefangenschaft als ein Vorbild des Pabstthums darstellte. so kehrte er, unter dem Vorwande die Magisterwürde anzunehmen, wieder nach Wittenberg zurück. Eine der frühesten, durch Luthers Reformation angeregten Flugschriften des Nürnberger Malers, der sich in seiner Schrift selbst nennt: "Der ist auch nit gebessert, der ein handel hat oder ein handtwerck, damit sein nechster betrogen oder verergert wirt, vnd nit daruon lesst, wie etliche thun, als Bildschnitzer, Maler vnnd Formschneyder." (S. 3) und weiter "Wiewol etlich gelert sagen, der gemain man sol nit mit der geschrifft vmb geen, wan es zimb sich nit, das ein Schuster das Ewängelion leß, oder mit feder vnd tinckten vmb gee sunder mit leder vnd schwertz etc. So sag ich darauff, Ich hab nye kain Esel gehört singen, als ein Nachtigal.", wobei es sich möglicherweise auf eine böse Anspielung auf den dichtenden Schumacher und Sänger Hans Sachs handelt. - Wenige winzige Tintenanmerkungen, schönes Exemplar mit dem seltenen Druckfehler "seh" statt "sehe" im Titel, wobei das fehlende "e" keine Druckerschwärze mehr aufgenommen hatte. Title-page with a woodcut single-element border featuring a bearded near-naked man with a child and a naked woman opposite with a child; Adam and Eve, with Cain and Abel? Als Ehrenhold hatte er den Beinamen Deutschland, um ihn von den andern (welschen) Herolden des Kaisers zu unterscheiden. Sturm machte im Gefolge des Kurfürsten Ludwig von der Pfalz den Feldzug gegen Sickingen und seine Burgen mit. Er war Augenzeuge des Vernichtungskrieges gegen die rheinische Ritterschaft. Sturms sehr genaue Erzählung ist immer als die Hauptquelle für die Geschichte des Feldzuges gegen Sickingen angesehen worden. "Was wir wirklich von den letzten Augenblicken Sickingens wissen, beruht lediglich auf der in ihrer Einfachheit geradezu ergreifenden Darstellung Sturms". (Kolde). Was dieser Ausgabe besonderen Wert verleiht, ist das künstlerisch hervorragende Titelbild. Es dürfte von Sebald Beham stammen, dem Röttinger auch einen Einblatt-Holzschnitt der Belagerung der Burg Landstuhl (Geisberg 291) zuweist. Der fein ausgeführte Holzschnitt zeigt im Vordergrund den sterbenden Sickingen am Boden, umgeben von den an ihren Wappen kenntlichen drei Fürsten, der Kurpfälzer hält Sickingens Hand, im Hintergrund eine Feste (Ebernburg) und Belagerungsvolk. - Titelbl. tls. stärk. angestaubt, einige Bl. linke Ecke mit Abriß (im w. Titel und Zwischentitel mit handkolorierter, grosser Initiale innerhalb ebenfalls kolorierter Holzschnittbordüre, mit 1 ganzseitigen handkolorierten Holzschnitt [König David und der Prophet Nathan] auf Titel verso, 1 handkolorierten Wappenholzschnitt und 1 fast ganzseitigen Holzschnitt [Moses empfangt die Gesetzestafeln] auf vorletztem Bl. verso. [16], CCXI, [9] Bl. (inkl. Wappenholzschnitt). Schweinslederband des 16. Jhs., mit Initialen 'IHS' auf Vorder-, respektive gekrönten Initialen 'MRA' in Blindprägung auf Hinterdeckel, Grünschnitt (ohne die beiden Schliessen). Seltene Erstausgabe der Psalmen-Übersetzung, mit Holzschnitten des Petrarcameisters im zeitgenössischen Kolorit. Autor der deutschen Übertragung war der humanistisch orientierte Prior und zeitweilige Provinzial der Augustiner Eremiten in Lauingen, Caspar Amman (1450-1524). Er korrespondierte und sympathisierte mit seinem Ordensbruder Martin Luther, dessen Psalter-Übersetzung erst 1524 erschien. Die Übersetzung des Gebetes Salomons stammt von dem berühmten Hebraisten Johannes Böschenstein (1472-1540), der während fünf Jahren Ammans Lehrer für Hebräisch in Ingolstadt war. Wegen seiner Predigten gegen die 1520 erschienene Bulle Exsurge Domine (Verurteilung von Luthers Bussauffassung) von Papst Leo X. sowie gegen das Edikt von Worms (Wider Martin Luthers Buecher vnd Lehre) von 1521 wurde Amman 1523 in den Kerker geworfen. Nach seiner Freilassung bemühte er sich vergeblich um eine Aufenthaltsgenehmigung im protestantisch gesinnten Ulm. Die hier altkolorierten Holzschnitte stammen von dem zwischen 1514 und 1532 für die Augsburger Buchdrucker tätigen Petrarcameister, dessen Gleichsetzung mit Hans Weiditz nach wie vor umstritten bleibt. Der aus Zwickau gebürtige und 1530 gestorbene Verleger Siegmund Grimm war seit 1507 in Augsburg ansässig, wo er zuerst als Stadtarzt und Apotheker tätig war. Ab 1517 betrieb er eine eigene Druckerei, die er aber 1527 bereits wieder aufgeben musste. Grimm verlegte in den Anfängen vor allem humanistische, später zunehmend reformatorische Schriften. - Das erste fliegende Bl. recto mit alten hs. Notizen. Ein vorzügliches Exemplar im Einband der Zeit. Christian Ernst Graf zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (1691-1771), mit Stempel und Exlibris, datiert 1721. Scarce first edition of the German translation of the Psalms by the humanistic oriented prior and early Hebraist Caspar Amman (1450-1524), provincial of the Augustine eremites in Lauingen near Dillingen. He corresponded and sympathized with Martin Luther whose own translation of the Psalter would appear in 1524. The translation of the The Song of Songs is from Amman's teacher in Ingolstadt, the celebrated Hebraist Johannes Böschenstein (1472-1540). In 1523 Amman was sent to jail for his sermons against the papal bull "Exsurge Domine" (condemnation of Luthers doctrines) by Leo X of September 1520 and against the Imperial Edict of Worms of 1521 (which condemned Luther's teachings and placed him under the ban of the Empire). After his ransom Amman tried in vain to get permission to settle down in the (Protestant oriented) City of Ulm. The hand-colored woodcuts origin from the Petrarca-Master who was active in Augsburg between 1514 and 1532. His identification with Hans Weiditz remains uncertain and controversial. The Zwickau born publisher Siegmund Grimm (died 1530) had settled in Augsburg in 1507, he run his own press from 1517 to 1527 only. In his early years Grimm published in particular works by the Humanists, later he supported fervently the cause of the Reformation. - First fly-leaf recto with notes by an old hand, first three leaves lightly browned in lower margin, title minimally stained. HARDBACK. 2600010106 En appelant à la linguistique, à la rhétorique, à la philologie et à l'histoire, L'Epithète et la connivence étudie une forme particulière de littérature doctrinale, produite sous François Ier par des auteurs dont les convictions spirituelles s'opposaient à la position défendue par la Faculté de Théologie. Son enjeu littéraire et idéologique consiste à rendre compte à la fois de la singularité des oeuvres dites "évangéliques" et de la cohérence des voix qui ont composé ces textes. La récurrence de qualificatifs significatifs (seul, vray, vive [foy]), comme leur ajout ou leur omission délibérés dans les traductions de textes luthériens, prouvent que l'épithète, au-delà de sa portée pédagogique, fonctionne comme un élément de la stratégie discursive de contournement de la censure. A fine copy in high quality early 18th C crimson morocco, tooled in gilt to a double-ruled panel design, floral corner ornaments, pointille and circle roll to central panel, spine gilt in compartments with small crown stamp, black morocco lettering piece, 2 small paper library labels. Contemporary marbled endpapers, French curl on wide comb pattern, a.e.g. Lower outer corners a little worn at edge. Armorial bookplate of the Earl of Macclesfield on pastedown, Shirburn Castle armorial blindstamp at head of first two ll. First and only Aldine edition of Claudian's works, edited by Aldus himself, in the typical portable format that characterises many of Aldus' editions of the great Latin and Greek authors. Claudian (d.c.AD 404) was in fact the last great Latin poet in the classical tradition. He was court poet under Honorius, whom he praised in a number of eulogies and defended in invectives against his enemies. He also wrote panegyrics of Honorius' ministers and of his general Stilicho, an epithalamium and four shorter poems for the marriage of Stilicho's daughter to Honorius, and a number of idylls and epigrams on a great variety of subjects (the Nile, a locust, an electric ray, etc.). Of these, the best-known deals with an old man from Verona and was translated by the 17th C poet Abraham Cowley. Claudian finest work, however, is 'The Rape of Proserpine'. Divided into four books, of which only 1100 lines survive, it tells with great charm the familiar story of Proserpine's abduction by Pluto. Mythological episodes are frequent in the poetry of Claudian, who remained attached to the old pagan religion. The finely executed binding (q.v. The title-page with a fine, deep woodcut border enclosing Badius's large woodcut of a printing press in use, folios (8), 191, (1, blank), folio, old half roan : with a short clean tear without loss in two leaves and the running headline touched only very slightly on just a very few leaves, otherwise a well-margined and very good-nice copy. Adams K14 (2 copies). An uncommon edition of the collected works, ascetical, homiletic, poetical, biographical, etc., all pervaded by the devotional spirit which finds its classic expression in the 'Imitation', of this ascetical writer (1380-1471). This edition follows that of Pirckheimer (1494) and carries his intrroduction as well as a short prologue by Jodocus Badius, the publisher of the present edition.

Two important works by Erasmus in a magnificent and interesting Flemish panel binding, probably by the binder Jan Tys at Malines, Spongia adversus aspergines Hutteni.

Joannes Froben, September 1523., Basel, - 8vo. Beautifully bound in contemporary full calf, ribbed spine with paper title label lettered in ink ('Spongi Erasmi'), sides with blind ruling around a magnificent centre piece, a triple panel of 94 x 60mm., consisting of two similar but not identical compartments with two rows of four animals and birds in winding vines. Both compartments are surrounded by a legend: the lower section reads: "De profundis / clamavi ad te domine / domine / exaudi vocem meam", the upper section has "Omnia si persa / famam servare memento / qua semel / amissa nula revisio erit". The two panels are separated by a frieze of four square compartments with three dogs and a porcupine; fore edge lettered in ink: 'Spongia Erasmi'. With Froben's printer's devise on title. (40) lvs. Binding: the magnificent and well preserved panel that occurs in very clear impressions on both sides of the present binding, is the well known so-called 'De profundis-panel' which is discussed at length in Staffan Fogelmark's book Flemish and related panel-stamped bindings (New York 1990), pp. 34-43, illustrated with examples on plates VI-VII and XXX. Our panel apparently belongs to a variant group without nail marks or flaw above the letters 'oi' in the left hand vertical part of the legend in the upper section. This variant, being also somewhat smaller than other groups, represents an earlier state used by the binder Jan Tys at Malines. Most dies of this panel are attributed to the printer/binder Geraert van der Hatart working in Bois-le-Duc ('s-Hertogenbosch in Northern Brabant, the Netherlands), from 1529 onwards. The dates of Erasmus's works contained in the binding suggest and support the assumption that our book was bound by Jan Tys at Malines.Ad 1: One of the three editions of this work by Erasmus that were all published in 1523 by Erasmus' famous printer and publisher Joannes Froben in Basel: one appeared in October, one without mentioning a month. So this edition from September 1523 is the editio princeps or the second edition (issue?). After a turbulent life the protestant humanist, poet, and fiery polemist Ulrich Hutten (1488-10 August 1523) fled to Switserland in 1522 where he expected to be welcomed by Erasmus. The latter, however, received him with an icy distance. Hutten reacted, as could be expected, with a defamatory pamphlet: his Expostulatio cum Erasmo, answered by Erasmus with his Spongia, published just before, or just after Hutten died on the island Ufenau in the lake of Zürich.Ad 2: Second edition of Erasmus's additions to and annotations on his own works. The first edition had appeared in 1523, also printed by Froben. A Catalogus omnium Erasmi Rot. lucubrationum had already appeared in 1522, also by Froben. Good copies in a very interesting Flemish panel binding with the ownership's entry of W. Carr, dated 1 July 1786, on the first fly-leaf.- (Top and tail of spine damaged, ties missing, last lv. of first work lacking and the four bands broken at that opening). Good edition of the Latin version of GUARINO of VUrone (1370-1460) and Gregorius TIPHERNAS (about 1415 - about 1469) whose first edition was given about 1470. The translation is re-examined here by the humanistic young person Conrad HERESBACH (1509-1576) of which it is the first claim to fame. Specimen with the beautiful typography. The historiU framing of the title page is engraved on wood according to Hans HOLBEIN; composed of four broad blocks it appears in edge of head king Solomon with on the left Plato and Aristote and on the right Socrates and Pythagore. The block of bottom of page represents the Muses with in the Calliope center crowning HomÞre. The two amounts represent the Greek authors and Latin. This "very beautiful GOOD. Bonne edition de la version latine de GUARINO de Verone (1370-1460) et Gregorius TIPHERNAS (vers 1415 - vers 1469) dont la premiere edition fut donnee vers 1470. La traduction est ici revue par le jeune humaniste Conrad HERESBACH (1509-1576) dont c'est le premier titre de gloire. Exemplaire a la belle typographie. Cette "tres belle composition" porte les initiales I.F. pour Jean Froben, pres de la figure d'Aristote ; elle fut utilisee pour la premiere fois sur les Adages d'Erasme de 1520. Le reste de l'ornementation se compose de deux encadrements architecturaux, l'un pour le feuillet de dedicace, l'autre pour le premier feuillet de texte, de bois varies formant bandeaux et de 18 grandes lettres historiees [50 x 50 millimetres] d'un "kinderalphabet" dont plusieurs sont repetees. [Hieronymus Höltzel] [Nuremberg] 1523 4to . One of two issues (the other printed at Zwickau with noprecedence known) of this account by the minister from Schonbach Johannes Stumpf . It describes judicial examination by the Bishop of Merseberg, Prince Adolphus II, prince of Anhalt of both Stumpf and a colleague (Franz Klotzsch) from Büch regarding their evangelical convictions. Stumpf (1500-1578), Swiss chronicler and theologian, was one of the most important personalities of the Swiss Reformation. He "... entered the order of the Knights of St. John in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1521 and a year later was appointed prior at Bubikon, Zürich. He there declared himself for the Reformation and, as a friend of Huldrych Zwingli, worked faithfully for the Reformers until his retirement in 1562. Stumpf's reputation rests upon his 'Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen und Völckeren chronikwirdiger Thaaten Beschreybung' (1547–48), probably the most famous of Swiss chronicles, describing the deeds of places, lands, and people of the confederation. It was a standard work until the 18th century. (Enc. Brit.). The work is illustrated with a very handsome woodcut architectural title-border. Both issues rare with only single copies found in OCLC. Only Emory University copy located in the US [14] pp. (without last blank leaf). Woodcut title-border (J. The final important document in the book (pp. 66-68), from Gregory XVI, reinstates to seven the number of protonotaries after they were increased to twelve by Sixtus V at the end of the sixteenth century. The additional forty-four blank ruled vellum leaves (a rather remarkable and rare collection of blank vellum leaves in itself) inlcude one leaf entitled memoria summarum.#11;#11;Contemporary full red velvet with the original Renaissance bosses and fittings of gold-plated brass depicting a Protonotary and scenes from the Passion of Christ. Flyleaves, inner spine, and portions of velvet possibly refreshed in the eighteenth century. Some very slight wear to bands. Overall an excellent copy.#11;#11;The treatment of the Passion of Christ, from Giotto's frescoes to D!rer's series was a rite of passage for many great artists and it was a subject undertaken with great reverence and a special sense of purpose. Its beautiful handling here in a series of gilded brass metal fittings underscores the importance accorded the manuscript. The cycle represented consists of four corner bosses on the front board (Agony in the Garden with the apostles asleep, Jesus Before Pilate washing his hands of the blood of the innocent, the Flagellation, and Crowning with Thorns); and four on the rear (Ecce Homo, Crucifixion of Christ between two thieves, Descent from the Cross, and finally, the Lamentation).#11;#11;There are additionally two central bosses, the front boss with the motto VII VIRORUM PROTONOTAR BULLAE AC STATUTA. The rear boss, an example of exquisite Renaissance craftsmanship, is worthy or special note and certainly further scholarly investigation. It depicts the figure of a Protonotary carrying the tools of his trade, namely his quill and book, and fixed with an ethereal gaze in clear acknowledgment of the divine purpose of his work. It should be noted that the manuscript was written in a period concurrent with Benvenuto Cellini's employment in the royal mint Given the superlative Vatican provenance of the manuscript, the Ganymede-like face of the Protonotary, the superb artistic execution of the central boss, and even possibly the rather bold undertaking of the Passion series itself, it is fair, at the very least, to attribute it to Cellini's circle and immediate milieu, if not the artist himself.#11;#11;As stunning as this Renaissance manuscript is for its singularly exquisite binding, it is also remarkable for its important content:#11;#11;The protonotaries apostolic (protonotarii apostolicii) are prelates in the Roman Curia who perform duties with regard to papal documents. In the Middle Ages the protonotaries were very high papal officials, often raised directly to the cardinalate. As such, this unique and unrecorded statute book is of great importance to the study of the Vatican scribes, the composition of the Papal Bullae, and most importantly, the administration of ecclesiastical authority in the Renaissance.#11;#11;The manuscript comprises bullae and statutes of various dates relating to the office of the the Protonotary as detailed above. It is essentially equivalent to a private register made for the Office itself, and composed largely in a elegant humanist hand on the finest roman vellum. Given the continued light ruling throughout, it is evident that the manuscript was initially prepared as a blank vellum volume, to be updated as new bullae were issued or statutes were changed. The great expense of its production, when from the fourteenth century onwards volumes of the Papal Regesta were generally made of paper, is indicative of the important purpose for which it was created.#11;#11;We can make a historical parallel of this manuscript with the coveted printed Constitutiones of the Society of Jesus (Rome, 1559). That small book, considered to be one of the core documents of the Counter Reformation, provided the general pattern of rule and government of the Jesuits and projected their administration and influence to the far-flung reaches of the globe during the great age of exploration. Here by contrast, we have a revered manuscript, crafted for internal use, that helps establish the pattern of rule and government not in Paraguay or Japan, but at the very seat of Renaissance Papal power.

In 1521 Balbi had appeared at the Diet of Worms as the ambassador of Louis II of Hungary, attracting considerable attention by a discourse in which he protested against the ideas of Luther and urged upon the assembled princes the necessity of a joint undertaking against the Turks. ‘Shortly afterwards he was in the service of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, who, in 1522, designated him Bishop of Gurk, and sent him to Rome on a congratulatory embassy to the newly elected pontiff, Adrian VI. It was a part of his mission also to induce the pope to proclaim a crusade against the Turk. The address [printed here] which he made on being received by the pope in a public audience, 9 February 1523, abounded in extravagant rhetoric, but in humanistic circles it was considered a marvel of eloquence’ (Catholic Encyclopedia). Although Balbi here praises the pope enthusiastically, he soon afterwards bitterly reproached him for failing to keep his promises.Apponyi 168; Göllner 178. Güthel), der zu den ältesten Freunden Luthers gehört. Geb. 1471 in Rötz, gest. am 24. Mai 1542 in Eisleben, erwarb er im Januar 1517 den Doktorgrad in Leipzig, trat aber im Ablassstreit auf Luthers Seite. Auf dem Heidelberger Konvent wurde er zum Prior in Eisleben gewählt. In der Krisenzeit des Ordens trat er auch in seinen Predigten für Luther ein. Auch als der Eislebener Konvent sich 1523 auflöste, blieb er in der Stadt und setzte seine Predigten fort. Seine Predigtsammlung erschien mit dem Haupttitel: "Quadragesimal oder etliche fastepredig, auß den Episteln un Euangelien". Siehe Claus S. 75 über die Druckgeschichte: "Dieser umfangreichste Druck der Schönsperger-Offizin in Zwickau führt die typographische Entwicklung in den ersten Monaten des Bestehens der Werkstatt deutlich vor Augen: Die ältere große Auszeichnungsschrift (Type 1) ist zunächst ziemlich rein vertreten, wird dann aber mit der großen Fraktur (Type 4) immer mehr vermischt ... Dies führt zu der Schlußfolgerung, daß die Predigten über mehrere Monate hinweg, vom Mai/Juni bis September 1523, in Abständen gesetzt und gedruckt worden sind, was wahrscheinlich mit der Lieferung des Manuskriptes zusammenhängt. Son enjeu littéraire et idéologique consiste à rendre compte à la fois de la singularité des œuvres dites «évangéliques» et de la cohérence des voix qui ont composé ces textes. Ce faisant, la notion d’«évangélisme», jusqu’alors étroitement dépendante des historiens qui la pensent, se trouve définie par les repères que livre l’écriture littéraire. A partir du postulat que la langue d’un groupe comporte des témoignages précis de convictions partagées, l’étude d’un corpus d’une vingtaine d’œuvres en vers ou en prose produites, entre la traduction du Nouveau Testament par Lefèvre d’Etaples (1523) et l’affaire des Placards (1534) par Marguerite de Navarre, Marot, Lefèvre, Farel, Aimé Meigret comme par des traducteurs anonymes de Luther, caractérise l’«écriture évangélique», à partir du rôle spécifique dévolu à l’épithète. La récurrence de qualificatifs significatifs (seul, vray, vive [foy]), comme leur ajout ou leur omission délibérés dans les traductions de textes luthériens, prouvent que l’épithète, au-delà de sa portée pédagogique, fonctionne comme un élément de la stratégie discursive de contournement de la censure. - In fine: Stampata in Venetia per Gregorio de Gregoriis, nel anno MDXXIII (1523) a di XIII (23) aprile. cm.10,5x15, cc.nn.7-1 b.-143-1 b., mancanza restaurata all'ult. c. b., bella vignetta xilogr. al front. con 2 duellanti e 5 figure che osservano. P.pelle coeva con impress. a secco, con abrasioni, sguardie sostituite. Aloni e lievi fioriture. Un tarletto isolato interessa un angolo bianco delle prime 4 cc. e un altro tarletto interessa parzialm. una lettera in tutte le cc. della 2°metà del vol. Il nome dell'Aut. si legge alla c. 9a : "Incomincia il libro de re mili / tare in materno composto / per il generoso misser Pa / ris de Puteo doctore de / lege. Lege feliciter". Paride Dal Pozzo (1413-93) "insige giureconsulto, nacque a Pimonte presso Amalfi e passò a Napoli per fare i suoi studi. Percorse indi le principali u-niversità d'Italia e di ritorno a Napoli, Alfonso I d'Aragona lo nominò suo consigliere e gli conferì la cattedra di giurisprudenza. Paride fu prescelto a maestro di Ferrante I duca di Calabria, il quale nel 1446, allorchè restò luogotenente del padre, lo nominò uditore generale. Ferrante I innalzato alla dignità reale nuovi onori largì al caro maestro." (cfr. Minieri Riccio p.284 che cita anche alcune o-pere, tra cui questa nell'ed. Venezia 1521). Il Dal Pozzo estrasse dalla sua op. latina De re militari, questo compendio sul duello, che tradusse in "volgare materno", ritenendo il duello un elemento importante dell'arte militare, "disciplina. trovata al governo dela republica, et freno de tyranni et la sua sublime doctrina essendo sepulta et a pochi cavalieri nota."(c.9 a). L'Aut. legittimava la sua difesa del duello, attraverso la citazione di autorevoli fonti, prima tra tutte la Bibbia, che permise il primo duello: ".si como le battaglie prima sono procedute da Dio, si como se lege nela Bibia che per volunta de leterno Idio fo permesso in quella età che Davit re combatesse col gigante Golia. Et oltra che parlando Dio al popolo hebreo, disse armatevi et confundeti la lingua loro, cioè deli Philistei inimici del populo di Dio."(c.10 a). Dopo le prime 7 cc., che contengono gli indici, e 1 c.b., inizia l'op. che si compone di 9 libri dai titoli: Libro I: Incomincia il libro deli re e deli principi dela iustitia dele singulare battaglie: duelli chiamati, quali se fan-no tra cavalieri: per dare ludi cio deli occorenti casi; Libro II: Incomincia il secondo libro che tracta de la electione del loco dela battaglia; Libro III: Incomincia ol terzo libro nel quale se tracta del guagio de battaglia; Libro IV: Incomincia il quarto li-bro nel quale se tracta dela electione dele arme; Libro V: Inco-mincia il quinto libro nel quale se tracta deli campioni, quali se danno nela battaglia per cavalieri che de ragione possono dare campioni; Libro VI: Incomincia il sesto libro, nel quale se tracta per quante cause se po venire a guaglio de battaglia; Libro VII: Incomincia il septimo libro dove se tracta dela nobiltà de cavalieri che veneno a battaglia dove se tracta in materia dela nobiltà; Libro VIII: Incomincia il libro octavo de li casi succedenti a le particulare battaglia e deli pacti deli combattenti; Libro IX: Inco-mincia il nono libro dove se tracta de qualli che sono renduti per prigionieri in duello, o in battaglia particulare e data fede de an-dare a richiesta deli vincitori. Der nicht signierte Titelholzschnitt zeigt den Verfasser als Prediger mit einem Kruzifix und dem Spruchband: "Unum deum adorabis et illi soli servies" (Einen Gott sollst du anbeten und ihm allein dienen). [Hieronymus Höltzel], [Nuremberg] 1523 - 4to . One of two issues (the other printed at Zwickau with no precedence known) of this account by the minister from Schonbach Johannes Stumpf . It describes judicial examination by the Bishop of Merseberg, Prince Adolphus II, prince of Anhalt of both Stumpf and a colleague (Franz Klotzsch) from Büch regarding their evangelical convictions. Stumpf (1500-1578), Swiss chronicler and theologian, was one of the most important personalities of the Swiss Reformation. He ". entered the order of the Knights of St. John in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1521 and a year later was appointed prior at Bubikon, Zürich. He there declared himself for the Reformation and, as a friend of Huldrych Zwingli, worked faithfully for the Reformers until his retirement in 1562. Stumpf's reputation rests upon his 'Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen und Völckeren chronikwirdiger Thaaten Beschreybung' (1547–48), probably the most famous of Swiss chronicles, describing the deeds of places, lands, and people of the confederation. It was a standard work until the 18th century. (Enc. Brit.). The work is illustrated with a very handsome woodcut architectural title-border. Both issues rare with only single copies found in OCLC. Only Emory University copy located in the US [14] pp. (without last blank leaf). Woodcut title-border (J. L’Egloga di Amicitia, in questa edizione aggiunta alla commedia, era stata pubblicata separatamente a Siena nel 1523. «Rara commedia, in terza rima, con mescolanza di alcune stanze in ottava rima (strambotti), senza divisione di atti e di scene, che introduce, fra i personaggi, cantori e ballerini. - Cm. 15,5, pp. (72). Bellissima legatura ottocentesca (firmata Adolphe Bertrand) in pieno marocchino rosso; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli in oro. Splendida carta marmorizzata alle sguardie e profilo interno dei piatti decorato in oro con ricchi motivi ornamentali. Esemplare rifilato e corto nel margine di testa con testo marginalmente interessato in poche cc. (sempre comunque leggibile). Esemplare peraltro fresco e ben conservato. Jean Begat (1523-1572), giureconsulto francese, ricoprì cariche di primissimo piano nel parlamento di Digione fino a diventarne presidente negli ultimi anni di vita. Impegnato politicamente su posizioni marcatamente cattoliche, Begat lottò contro la revoca degli editti del 1563 che concedevano libertà di culto ai protestanti. In questo saggio, pubblicato anonimo, l'A. confuta la tesi della possibile convivenza tra confessioni religiose, ipotizzando una grave lesione degli interessi dello stato dovuta ad un permanente ostacolo nell'esercizio del potere. The title-page with a fine, deep woodcut border enclosing Badius's large woodcut of a printing press in use, folios (8), 191, (1, blank), folio, old half roan : with a short clean tear without loss in two leaves and the running headline touched only very slightly on just a very few leaves, otherwise a well-margined and very good-nice copy. Adams K14 (2 copies). An uncommon edition of the collected works, ascetical, homiletic, poetical, biographical, etc., all pervaded by the devotional spirit which finds its classic expression in the 'Imitation', of this ascetical writer (1380-1471). This edition follows that of Pirckheimer (1494) and carries his intrroduction as well as a short prologue by Jodocus Badius, the publisher of the present edition.

Ausser einem Pamphlet gegen die Nonnenkloester und einem weiteren gegen den Franziskaner August von Alfeld ist vom Verfasser, einem "Freund und Befoerderer der Reformation" (Joecher/A.), nur sein Herkunftsort Feldkirch/Vorarlberg bekannt. - Die Titelborduere aehnlich, jedoch nicht ganz uebereinstimmend mit zwei bei Dommer (Lutherdrucke) beschriebenen: als Fussleiste zwei von Kapitellen eingerahmte Portraitmedaillons; wie bei Dommer 225, 116 (Augsburg, Otmar, 1521) seitlich auf Fussgestellen Adam und Eva (mit Apfel und Schlange) in der bei Dommer beschriebenen Haltung; in dem "zwischen die Seitenleisten eingesetzten Kopfstuecke Gott Vater in halber Figur, mit der rechten Hand segnend, in der linken den Reichsapfel, von gefluegelten Engelskoepfchen umgeben" (Dommer 257, 125: Augsburg, Ramminger, 1522). HARDBACK. 2600010106 En appelant à la linguistique, à la rhétorique, à la philologie et à l'histoire, L'Epithète et la connivence étudie une forme particulière de littérature doctrinale, produite sous François Ier par des auteurs dont les convictions spirituelles s'opposaient à la position défendue par la Faculté de Théologie. Son enjeu littéraire et idéologique consiste à rendre compte à la fois de la singularité des oeuvres dites "évangéliques" et de la cohérence des voix qui ont composé ces textes. Ce faisant, la notion d'"évangélisme", jusqu'alors étroitement dépendante des historiens qui la pensent, se trouve définie par les repères que livre l'écriture littéraire. A partir du postulat que la langue d'un groupe comporte des témoignages précis de convictions partagées, l'étude d'un corpus d'une vingtaine d'oeuvres en vers ou en prose produites, entre la traduction du Nouveau Testament par Lefèvre d'Etaples (1523) et l'affaire des Placards (1534) par Marguerite de Navarre, Marot, Lefèvre, Farel, Aimé Meigret comme par des traducteurs anonymes de Luther, caractérise l'"écriture évangélique", à partir du rôle spécifique dévolu à l'épithète. La récurrence de qualificatifs significatifs (seul, vray, vive [foy]), comme leur ajout ou leur omission délibérés dans les traductions de textes luthériens, prouvent que l'épithète, au-delà de sa portée pédagogique, fonctionne comme un élément de la stratégie discursive de contournement de la censure. [Johann Stuchs], [Nuremberg] 1523 - Modern wrappers 4to . FIRST GERMAN EDITION of Luther's "Adversus Armatum virem Cokleum" which appeared the same year in Latin at Wittenberg. The German scholar Johannes Cochlaeus (d. 1552) having read Luther's An den Christlichen Adel and Captivitas Babylonica to which he wrote a refutation but was unable to find a publisher. He wanted to have a public debate, defending the sacraments, with Luther and privately met him twice while attending the Diet of Worms on the 4th of April 1521; "The final discussion in Luther's rooms convinced both of their basic differences of opinion. Thereafter Cochlaeus considered it his duty to preserve the unity of the church by attacking the reformers in his writings. Although this caused him to lose many of his former friends, he soon emerged as one of Germany's leading Catholic controversialists" (Contemporaries of Erasmus I, p. 321). Cochlaeus attacked a young and ardent admirer of Luther, Wilhelm Nesen (1493-1524: cf. Contemp. of Erasmus III, pp. 12-14) in his De gratia sacramentorum liber unus written in the form of a letter. Luther attacks Cochlaeus with wit and humor but also clearly sets out his positions on the sacraments as earlier had done at the Diet. Second edition (first, Venice 1492). § The al-Maliki, or Liber regius, of al-Majusi (Haly Abbas) was the leading treatise of medicine for a hundred years, when it was displaced by ibn Sina's (Avicenna's) Canon (Garrison--Morton 42, citing the 1492 edition). According to Sarton it is 'more systematic and concise than Razi's Hawi, but more practical than Avicenna's Qanun, by which it was superseded'. Dealing with both the theory and practice of medicine, Sarton says the best parts are those devoted to dietetics and the materia medica. He also notes al-Majusi's rudimentary conception of the capillary system; interesting clinical observations; and 'proof of the motions of the womb during parturition (the child does not come out; it is pushed out)'. The first edition, Venice 1492, is based on the translation by Stephen of Antioch, completed in 1127; the same translation is used here, with annotations by Michael de Capella. [Hieronymus Höltzel], [Nuremberg] 1523 - 4to . One of two issues (the other printed at Zwickau with no precedence known) of this account by the minister from Schonbach Johannes Stumpf . It describes judicial examination by the Bishop of Merseberg, Prince Adolphus II, prince of Anhalt of both Stumpf and a colleague (Franz Klotzsch) from Büch regarding their evangelical convictions. Stumpf (1500-1578), Swiss chronicler and theologian, was one of the most important personalities of the Swiss Reformation. He ". entered the order of the Knights of St. John in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1521 and a year later was appointed prior at Bubikon, Zürich. He there declared himself for the Reformation and, as a friend of Huldrych Zwingli, worked faithfully for the Reformers until his retirement in 1562. Stumpf's reputation rests upon his 'Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen und Völckeren chronikwirdiger Thaaten Beschreybung' (1547–48), probably the most famous of Swiss chronicles, describing the deeds of places, lands, and people of the confederation. It was a standard work until the 18th century. (Enc. Brit.). The work is illustrated with a very handsome woodcut architectural title-border. Both issues rare with only single copies found in OCLC. Only Emory University copy located in the US [14] pp. (without last blank leaf). Woodcut title-border (J. [Johann Stuchs] [Nuremberg] 1523 Modern wrappers 4to . FIRST GERMAN EDITION of Luther's "Adversus Armatum virem Cokleum" which appeared the same year in Latin at Wittenberg. The German scholar Johannes Cochlaeus (d. 1552) having read Luther's An den Christlichen Adel and Captivitas Babylonica to which he wrote a refutation but was unable to find a publisher. He wanted to have a public debate, defending the sacraments, with Luther and privately met him twice while attending the Diet of Worms on the 4th of April 1521; "The final discussion in Luther's rooms convinced both of their basic differences of opinion. Thereafter Cochlaeus considered it his duty to preserve the unity of the church by attacking the reformers in his writings. Although this caused him to lose many of his former friends, he soon emerged as one of Germany's leading Catholic controversialists" (Contemporaries of Erasmus I, p. 321). Cochlaeus attacked a young and ardent admirer of Luther, Wilhelm Nesen (1493-1524: cf. Contemp. of Erasmus III, pp. 12-14) in his De gratia sacramentorum liber unus written in the form of a letter. Luther attacks Cochlaeus with wit and humor but also clearly sets out his positions on the sacraments as earlier had done at the Diet. Title in red and black within woodcut historiated border, contents browned with occasional marginal dampstaining and scattered early marginalia, preliminaries reinforced in gutters, burn marks in blank upper inner corner of last few leaves. (Lyon: Antonius du Ry for Jacobus & Franciscus de Giunta and partners, 16 May 1523). Abu Zakariyya Yuhanna Ibn Massawayh (c.777-857) is one of the great names in Arab medicine. He was personal physician to the Abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun, al-Mu'tasim, al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakil, and spent most of his life in Baghdad and Samarra. He contributed to the translating activities of the famous " Bayt al-Hikma"; and Hunayn ibn Ishaq, the most influential of the translators of Greek scientific texts, was his pupil. Despite his distinction, much of Ibn Masawayh writing had not reached us. Just a handful of his texts are extant in Arabic. More has been preserved in Latin translation, though the attribution of some texts to an elder as opposed to a younger Mesue has given the false impression that there was more than one Ibn Masawayh. This work is a collection of medical writings ascribed to Ibn Massawayh (d. 1015), including a popular pharmacopoeia based on Muslim knowledge, "for centuries the standard text-book of pharmacy in the West" (Sarton). this edition contains the apparent earliest printing of the anatomia porci falsely attributed to Copho, a medieval account of the public dissection of a pig for teaching purposes at Salerno, which "may be said to mark the beginning of anatomical research in western Christian Europe" (Sarton). Also included are Symphorien Champier''s life of Mesuë and Doctorum artis peonie cognomina, a list of epithets customarily applied to noted medical authors from antiquity onward; Pietro d''Abano''s supplement to the pharmacopoeia; the antidotary of Nicolaus Salernitanus; the Ars medendi supposedly by Copho; and a synopsis by Jacques Desparts of selected remedies credited to Mesuë.
