In Evangelivm Lvcae Paraphrasis Erasmi Roterodami, per autorem recognita.
Basel: Joh. Froben, 1523 (in fine: 1524).. Octavo. 164 x 109 mm. [23], [1 weiße]; [526], [1 weiße], [1] Seiten. - Lagensignaturen: Aa8, Bb4; a-z8, A-K8. Mit Holzschnittinitialen und -zierstücken. Handgefertigter blindgeprägter Schweinsledereinband der Zeit auf drei Doppelbünden und aus Inkunabelpapier zusammengeklebten Pappdeckeln. Vier Stoffschließbänder entfernt. Auf den Deckeln im Rand eine ornamentale Rolle mit Vasen, Bändern und fleuralen Elementen (116 x 13 mm, nachgewiesen in Wittenberg: "Predigerseminar 2vo HTh 163" auf einem Mainzer Druck von 1549), mittig senkrecht in zwei Spalten nebeneinander gesetzt eine Rolle mit vier Halbfiguren: "LVGRECI - ? - DI:LEA - ?" (147 x 16 mm = Haebler II,226,30). Es handelt sich vermutlich um eine Werkstatt aus dem katholischen Süddeutschland.. Vierter Druck, gleich kollationierend wie der Erstdruck 1523, ebenfalls bei Froben; unterschiedlich sind der Titel, das Datum "1524" am Schluß auf fol. K7 verso sowie der Vermerk, daß diese Ausgabe vom Autor, der ja bis 1529 in Basel weilte, durchgesehen sei. Die Kommentare und Paraphrasen zum Neuen Testament sollten dessen Erschließung auch für die weniger gebildeten Christen dienen. Zuerst wird die Bedeutung der Worte selbst festgestellt, die zu einem tieferen Verständnis des Sinnes führen soll. Die Paraphrasen zum Lukas-Evangelium sind Heinrich VIII. von England gewidmet und zu jener Zeit geschrieben, da sich Erasmus mit den Reformatoren auseinandersetzte: 1523 verfaßte er die Schrift gegen Hutten, ein Jahr später gegen Luther jene über den freien Willen. - Besitzeintrag von Joan. Wirts auf dem vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz recto, von dessen Hand auch einige wenige, saubere Marginalien rühren (der 1658 gestorbene schweizer Theologe? vgl. Jöcher IV,2012). Besitzeintrag auf dem vorderen Spiegel: "Ex Librij Antonij Thomae \| Ao 1668. 17. Novemb." Weiterer Besitzeintrag: "Joannes Jacobus Franciscus \| Comes ab (?) \| 1740" auf dem Titel oben. Rechts von der Druckermarke auf dem Titel Bibliotheksstempel des Aschaffenburger Kapuzinerklosters, ein weiterer Stempel desselben gelöscht. Einband etwas fleckig, Kanten teils berieben; Bezugsfehlstelle an der oberen Ecke des Hinterdeckels. Innen im oberen weißen Rand der ersten Hälfte ein schwacher kleiner Fleck, sonst nur minimal fleckig. Titel mit kleiner Rasur. Breitrandig; noch schönes und innen recht frisches Exemplar in einem Meistereinband. - - - Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over pasteboards, three raised bands, bound in southern Germany. 4to (195 x 147 mm). Titel innerhalb breiter Holzschnitt-Bordüre. [40] Bl. (letzte 3 S. leer). Broschur des 19. Jhs. Wittenberg, [Lucas Cranach und Christian Döring], 1523. Erstausgabe, zweiter Druck von Luthers wohl im August veröffentlichter bedeutender Schrift im Streit um das Zölibat (Verbot der Priesterehe). Der Wittenberger Reformator wählte das siebte Kapitel des ersten Korintherbriefs zur Auslegung aus, weil dieses das Hauptstück darstelle, auf welches die Feinde des Ehestandes und Lobredner des Zölibats sich beriefen. Luther wollte "des Teufels Keuschheit" aufdecken, durch deren Schein die Jugend verführt werde, und Fleiss aufwenden, dass dieses Kapitel "nicht länger ihr Schanddeckel bleibe". - Die hier in klarem Abdruck vorliegende architektonische Titeleinfassung mit eckigen, rankengeschmückten Pilastern und geflügelten Putti als Schildhalter, stammen gemäss Zimmermann von Lucas Cranach selbst, nach Koepplin/Falk (Nr. 235) sicher aber aus dessen Werkstatt. - Ein breitrandiges und sauberes Exemplar, komplett mit dem manchmal fehlenden letzten leeren Blatt. Jhdts., S. 74, Nr. 7.- VD 16, G 3986.- Einzige Ausgabe. 4. und in sich abgeschlossener Teil der 6-teiligen Predigtsammlung des lutherischen Theologen und Reformators Caspar Güttel (od. Güthel), der zu den ältesten Freunden Luthers gehört. Geb. 1471 in Rötz, gest. am 24. Mai 1542 in Eisleben, erwarb er im Januar 1517 den Doktorgrad in Leipzig, trat aber im Ablassstreit auf Luthers Seite. Auf dem Heidelberger Konvent wurde er zum Prior in Eisleben gewählt. In der Krisenzeit des Ordens trat er auch in seinen Predigten für Luther ein. Auch als der Eislebener Konvent sich 1523 auflöste, blieb er in der Stadt und setzte seine Predigten fort. Seine Predigtsammlung erschien mit dem Haupttitel: "Quadragesimal oder etliche fastepredig, auß den Episteln un Euangelien". Siehe Claus S. 75 über die Druckgeschichte: "Dieser umfangreichste Druck der Schönsperger-Offizin in Zwickau führt die typographische Entwicklung in den ersten Monaten des Bestehens der Werkstatt deutlich vor Augen: Die ältere große Auszeichnungsschrift (Type 1) ist zunächst ziemlich rein vertreten, wird dann aber mit der großen Fraktur (Type 4) immer mehr vermischt. Dies führt zu der Schlußfolgerung, daß die Predigten über mehrere Monate hinweg, vom Mai/Juni bis September 1523, in Abständen gesetzt und gedruckt worden sind, was wahrscheinlich mit der Lieferung des Manuskriptes zusammenhängt. (WR 02-147) Nach Misserfolgen in Wertheim wirkte Jakob Strauß als Reformator in Eisenach - "ein unruhiges, stürmisches Original, das mannigfach an Karlstadt erinnert. Mengung von Altem und Neuen Testament, von Geistlichem und Weltlichem, wissenschaftliche Bildung und Unklarheit in den praktischen Zielen, stolzes Bewusstsein seiner akademischen Würde und warmer Sinn für des Volkes Not, Stärke im Angriff gegen das Alte und Schwäche im Aufbau des Neuen charakterisieren diesen Mann, der wie ein Meteor plötzlich als fruchtbarer Schriftsteller erscheint und wieder verschwindet" (RE XIX, 92). Seit Anfang 1523 in Eisenach, schaffte er schon bald nach seiner Ankunft die lateinische Messe und die Taufe mit dem Tauföl (Chrisam) ab, indem er seiner Gemeinde in der vorliegenden Osterpredigt drastisch klarmachte, dass das Chrisam nur einen Erwerbsartikel der bischöflichen Kasse bilde. "In summa. Alles das sy (die Priester) auch in jrem ertichten gotesdienst fürnemen und volbringen, das schreyt on unterlaß gelt, gelt, gelt".- Einer von drei Drucken desselben Jahres. "Auch die kleine Schrift Simon Reuters - 1523 entstanden - ist noch von Hoffnungen auf eine Reichsreform durch den Kaiser und das Reichsregiment getragen. Sie ist ein Zeugnis für eine Reihe z.T. anonym veröffentlichter Schriften, die mit bescheidenen theoretischen Voraussetzungen in der Diskussion befindliche Fragen aufgriffen und Wunschvorstellungen über vorhandene Möglichkeiten der Veränderung weiter nährten." Über den offenbar in Schleiz ansässigen Verfasser ist nichts bekannt, es erschienen noch zwei weitere Flugschriften von Ihm zur selben Zeit, alle (bis auf einen Nachdruck) bei Erlinger in Bamberg, woraus Schottenloher (Fränkische Druckereien) eine Bekanntschaft zwischen Verfasser und Drucker schliesst. Paris, Chevallon 1523. Folio (36 x 26 cm). [22], 450, [8] Bl. Titel in Rot und Schwarz gedruckt, mit großer Holzschnitt-Druckermarke und umlaufender ornamentaler Bordüre. Moderner Ganzlederband im Stil des 18. Jhs. mit reicher Rückenvergoldung. Durchgehend gering wurmlöchrig, nur in den Aussenlagen stärker. Titelblatt angerändert bis in die ornamentale Bordüre. Die letzten Blätter in den Rändern etwas sporfleckig, dort auch etwas Papierverlust. Adams 1167. Machiels 465. Nicht in BM STC French (1518 oder 1533). Panzer VIII 45, 989 (Ausgabe 1518). Zweite, offenbar kollationsgleiche Ausgabe der Werke Papst Gregor I., der Große (540-604), aus dem Jahre 1523. Fünf Jahre zuvor war sie bei Berthold Rembolt erschienen, dessen Witwe 1520 den Drucker Claude Chevallon 1520 (den Drucker dieser Ausgabe) heiratete. Dies erklärt, warum auf dem in rot und schwarz gedruckten Titel die prächtige Druckermarke Rembolt's prangt, während die von Chevallon am Ende des Buches zu finden ist. Schöner zweispaltiger Druck noch ganz im Stil einer Inkunabel. Second editon of the works of pope Gregorius I (540-604) on Job, Song of songs etc. The first edition was printed in 1518 by Berthold Rembolt, former associate of Ulrich Gering in Paris. After Rembolt's dead, his widow Charlotte Guillard married the typograph Claude Chevallon in 1520. The black and red title, with a wood engraved ornemental border, shows Rembolt's large printer's mark at its centre and the name of Chevallon at the bottom. Chevallon's printer's mark, inspired by Rembolt's one, appears at the end of the volume. The text is set in a nice typography in two columns and counts numerous ornemental and historiated initials. Modern pastiche binding : full dark brown calf, gold tooled ribbed spine, red edges. Minor wormholes passim, little loss at the corners and the margins and 2 small and reinforced marginal tears without any loss on the title, handwritten annotation at the bottom of one leaf, light mildew spot at the corner of the last leaves with minor loss of paper. [Rome, Francesco Minucio Calvo, 1523]. 4to, ff. [8]; upper margins trimmed slightly short; nineteenth-century vellum-backed patterned boards. One of at least three editions to appear in the same year. In 1521 Balbi had appeared at the Diet of Worms as the ambassador of Louis II of Hungary, attracting considerable attention by a discourse in which he protested against the ideas of Luther and urged upon the assembled princes the necessity of a joint undertaking against the Turks. ‘Shortly afterwards he was in the service of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, who, in 1522, designated him Bishop of Gurk, and sent him to Rome on a congratulatory embassy to the newly elected pontiff, Adrian VI. It was a part of his mission also to induce the pope to proclaim a crusade against the Turk. The address [printed here] which he made on being received by the pope in a public audience, 9 February 1523, abounded in extravagant rhetoric, but in humanistic circles it was considered a marvel of eloquence’ (Catholic Encyclopedia). Although Balbi here praises the pope enthusiastically, he soon afterwards bitterly reproached him for failing to keep his promises. Apponyi 168; Göllner 178. Erste Ausgabe der seltenen Schrift über die guten Werke und vom Verdienst. Außer einem Pamphlet gegen die Nonnenklöster und einem weiteren gegen den Franziskaner August von Alfeld ist vom Verfasser, einem "Freund und Beförderer der Reformation" (Jöcher/A.), nur sein Herkunftsort Feldkirch/Vorarlberg bekannt. - Die Titelbordüre ähnlich, jedoch nicht ganz übereinstimmend mit zwei bei Dommer (Lutherdrucke) beschriebenen: als Fußleiste zwei von Kapitellen eingerahmte Portraitmedaillons; wie bei Dommer 225, 116 (Augsburg, Otmar, 1521) seitlich auf Fußgestellen Adam und Eva (mit Apfel und Schlange) in der bei Dommer beschriebenen Haltung; in dem "zwischen die Seitenleisten eingesetzten Kopfstücke Gott Vater in halber Figur, mit der rechten Hand segnend, in der linken den Reichsapfel, von geflügelten Engelsköpfchen umgeben" (Dommer 257, 125: Augsburg, Ramminger, 1522). Durchgehend wurmspurig mit gelegentlichem Buchstabenverlust. Aus der Bibliothek des Vorarlberger Rechtsanwalts Dr. Karl J. Steger mit dessen gest. Mouillures marginales, et petits trous de ver peu visibles en marge intérieur. Nombreuses et copieuses annotations du XVIe siècle en marge. Signature sur le titre du médecin du 18e siècle Pierre Guisard. Stumpf (1500-1578), Swiss chronicler and theologian, was one of the most important personalities of the Swiss Reformation. He ". entered the order of the Knights of St. John in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1521 and a year later was appointed prior at Bubikon, Zürich. He there declared himself for the Reformation and, as a friend of Huldrych Zwingli, worked faithfully for the Reformers until his retirement in 1562. Stumpf's reputation rests upon his 'Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen und Völckeren chronikwirdiger Thaaten Beschreybung' (1547–48), probably the most famous of Swiss chronicles, describing the deeds of places, lands, and people of the confederation. Der ehemalige Ulmer Franziskaner war durch Luthers Sendbrief 'An den christlichen Adel deutscher Nation' gewonnen worden und gehörte für die Altgläubigen zu den bestgehassten Vertretern der Reformation. "Er könne wohl eine ganze Provinz verführen, sagte einer, so viel Eindruck mache er bei dem gemeinen Mann" (RE V, 123). Die Wurzel seines Erfolges lag in seiner geschlossenen Persönlichkeit, "gütig und gewaltig, wie neben Luther kaum ein anderer in jener reichen Zeit" (RGG/2/ II, 5). Die vorliegende Schrift spielt auf Eberlins Verstoßung aus dem Kloster und seine Vertreibung aus Ulm an. [Johann Stuchs], [Nuremberg] 1523 Modern wrappers 4to . FIRST GERMAN EDITION of Luther's "Adversus Armatum virem Cokleum" which appeared the same year in Latin at Wittenberg. The German scholar Johannes Cochlaeus (d. 1552) having read Luther's An den Christlichen Adel and Captivitas Babylonica to which he wrote a refutation but was unable to find a publisher. He wanted to have a public debate, defending the sacraments, with Luther and privately met him twice while attending the Diet of Worms on the 4th of April 1521; "The final discussion in Luther's rooms convinced both of their basic differences of opinion. Thereafter Cochlaeus considered it his duty to preserve the unity of the church by attacking the reformers in his writings. Although this caused him to lose many of his former friends, he soon emerged as one of Germany's leading Catholic controversialists" (Contemporaries of Erasmus I, p. 321). Cochlaeus attacked a young and ardent admirer of Luther, Wilhelm Nesen (1493-1524: cf. Contemp. of Erasmus III, pp. 12-14) in his De gratia sacramentorum liber unus written in the form of a letter. Luther attacks Cochlaeus with wit and humor but also clearly sets out his positions on the sacraments as earlier had done at the Diet. Italic letter, small woodcut initials, four half-page woodcuts of siege engines and a bridge over the Rhine near beginning. Light age-yellowing, minor marginal worming to title-page and last two leaves, a good copy in later C16 red panelled morocco gilt over bds, fleurs-de-lys at corners of panel and in three of four) compartments on spine, top compartment lettered gilt. An early edition of Ortica's translation, first recorded in 1517, which dominated the Italian market in the first half of the C16. In this edition the translation is still apparently unfinished - after Book VI Ortica includes a letter apologising for omitting his version of Book VII, which was imperfect and interrupted. The history of Caesar's military campaigns in Gaul, Spain, Africa, Egypt and the Civil Wars, with their terse style and lively narrative, have, in their Latin original, been a perennial favorite with schoolmasters. In the vernacular the book could be used as a crib, and at the beginning the translator provides a vocabulary of Latin and Italian place names, explaining that it is so short because he has not had more time, with all the work of translating, transcribing and having the edition printed; he promises that his versions of the Lives of Plutarch and Helius Spatianus, which he is in the process of writing, will have longer lists. The travails of the C16 literary hack! The three half-page illustrations of siege engines, the "vinea", the "ariete" and the "testudine", and the one of the bridge half-constructed in the middle of the Rhine, which all follow the vocabulary, are very jolly. The binding is curious. It is C16 Italian morocco but over bds of the thickness we would normally associate only with pigskin. Did the binder or his client have a change of heart half way? Is it a provincial production of the far north Italian where German style bindings were more common? Were there once many bindings like this but very few survivors? BM STC It. p. 135. Not in Adams. Frontespizio con titolo in rosso racchiuso in una cornice silografica a motivi floreali stampata in inchiostro blu; al verso della carta P3 marca tipografica dei fratelli Vitali raffigurante il leone di S. Marco che tiene con la zampa destra il Vangelo recante la scritta ‘Pax tibi Marce evangelista meus’. Alcuni diagrammi silografici nel testo. Legatura coeva in pergamena floscia recante sul piatto superiore la scritta, in caratteri capitali, ‘Ambrosii Nolani Problemata’ in inchiostro marrone, racchiusa da una cornice formata da quattro cerchi concentrici. La stessa iscrizione manoscritta, ma in caratteri gotici, compare anche lungo il dorso del volume; tracce di bindelle. Esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione; legatura parzialmente scucita al dorso. Antica nota manoscritta di possesso illeggibile al frontespizio. Rarissima prima – ed unica - edizione di quest'opera di Ambrogio Leone, dotto medico, filosofo, storico, matematico e letterato originario di Nola. Thorndicke ne fa menzione per la sua analisi, incredibilmente sofisticata e all'avanguardia rispetto ai tempi, della sifilide (Historia V.147), pubblicata otto anni prima della prima edizione del Fracastoro. «Ambrogio Leone fu mente eclettica, aperta ad ogni forma di cultura, anche se provava una naturale e particolare inclinazione per le scienze sperimentali e per la filosofia. Figlio del suo tempo, egli assorbì a Padova, a Napoli e a Venezia tutti gli aspetti e le sfumature della complessa cultura e civiltà dell’Umanesimo e produsse, nei primi lustri del secolo successivo, il Rinascimento, buona parte delle sue opere, che di quella cultura sono, spesso, la sintesi e la puntualizzazione esegetica. Alcune di esse, infatti, sono come delle enciclopedie del sapere, ricche di erudizione messa al servizio di quanti volessero apprendere e di coloro che desiderassero approfondire o rivedere le proprie cognizioni filosofiche e scientifiche» (Ammirati, p. 97). Le Quaestiones sono «un’opera colossale, una vera enciclopedia che per il vario contenuto e le finalità che […] anticipano l’Illuminismo, risponde a quesiti riguardanti le più disparate discipline e a domande le più strane e curiose, non ebbe, a quanto consta, altre edizioni oltre a quella veneziana, nonostante la grande considerazione in cui fu tenuta dagli studiosi del Rinascimento e dei secoli successivi. Erasmo nel 1519, scrivendo all’amico, dice di essere rimasto meravigliato per non aver avuto ragguagli su quell’opera: “De problematis rerum naturalium, quod opus iam olim habeas in manibus, admiror te nihil meminisse” » (Ammirati, pp. 139-140). Oekolampad war nach dem Zwischenspiel als Schlosskaplan bei Franz v. Sickingen Ende 1522 nach Basel zurückgekehrt. Ohne eine feste Anstellung arbeitete er zunächst für den Basler Buchdrucker Cratander an der Übersetzung der Kirchenväter. Die Universität verweigerte ihm die Ausübung seiner Lehrbefugnis, so dass er seine Vorlesungen unter wachsendem Zulauf außerhalb der Universität halten musste. Titrate in a framing engraved on wood, typographical mark on wood with the back of the last layer. (Strongly restored Binding. Some overloads with ink with the title. Good edition of the Latin version of GUARINO of VÚrone (1370-1460) and Gregorius TIPHERNAS (about 1415 - about 1469) whose first edition was given about 1470. The translation is re-examined here by the humanistic young person Conrad HERESBACH (1509-1576) of which it is the first claim to fame. Specimen with the beautiful typography. The historiÚ framing of the title page is engraved on wood according to Hans HOLBEIN; composed of four broad blocks it appears in edge of head king Solomon with on the left Plato and Aristote and on the right Socrates and Pythagore. The block of bottom of page represents the Muses with in the Calliope center crowning HomÞre. The two amounts represent the Greek authors and Latin. This "very beautiful GOOD. Bonne édition de la version latine de GUARINO de Vérone (1370-1460) et Gregorius TIPHERNAS (vers 1415 - vers 1469) dont la première édition fut donnée vers 1470. La traduction est ici revue par le jeune humaniste Conrad HERESBACH (1509-1576) dont c'est le premier titre de gloire. Exemplaire à la belle typographie. L'encadrement historié de la page de titre est gravé sur bois d'après Hans HOLBEIN ; composé de quatre larges blocs il figure en bordure de tête le roi Salomon avec à gauche Platon et Aristote et à droite Socrates et Pythagore. Le bloc de bas de page représente les muses avec au centre Calliope couronnant Homère. Les deux montants représentent les auteurs grecs et latin. Cette "très belle composition" porte les initiales I.F. pour Jean Froben, près de la figure d'Aristote ; elle fut utilisée pour la première fois sur les Adages d'Erasme de 1520. Le reste de l'ornementation se compose de deux encadrements architecturaux, l'un pour le feuillet de dédicace, l'autre pour le premier feuillet de texte, de bois variés formant bandeaux et de 18 grandes lettres historiées [50 x 50 millimètres] d'un "kinderalphabet" dont plusieurs sont répétées. Rare early edition of the famous bull against Luther by Pope Adrian VI Breve quoddam Papae Adriani Sexti adversus Lutherum.
(Wittenberg, Johann Rhau-Grunenberg, 1523).. 4to. Modern boards. (5) lvs. (the last blank lacking as usual).. One of the rare early 1523 editions of this papal bull of the only Dutch pope Adrian VI (1459-1523) against Martin Luther, together with the notes Luther added to his German translation of the bull, published several times in the same year, for example in Wittenberg, Johannn Rhau-Grunenberg, 1523 (Benzing, Lutherblibl . 1543).The bull is dated Rome, 30 November 1522, only a few months after Adrian had accepted his election as pope, and is signed by Theodor Hezius (d. 1555), the Dutch secretary and right hand of the new pope ( Contemp. of Erasmus II, p.190-1). The pope addresses the authorities at Bamberg ('Dilectis filiis consulibus & senatui civitatis Bambergensis') and, in term uncharacteristic of the mild pope, calls on the authorities to suppress Luther and his followers (f. 2v-5v).The bull is preceded by a letter by Francisco Chierigati (d. 1639), dated Nürnberg, 12 January 1523, to the same authorities (f. 2r). In the autumn of 1522 Adrian made hi bishop of Teramo in the Abruzzi and entrusted him with a most important mission, that of nuncio to the diet of Nürnberg, where he presented the pope's pleas for enforcement of the edict of Worms (1521) against Luther ( Contemp. of Erasmus I, p. 301). Very good copy of this rare work, with a modern library stamp of the 'Ambrose Swasey Library' on the verso of the title.
