AUGUSTINE, Saint: VIVES, Juan Luis
Io. Frobenius lectori S.D. En habes ... Aurelii Augustini, opusabsolutissimum, de civitate Dei, magnis sudoribus emendatum ... per virumclarissimum & undequaque doctissimum Ioan. Lodovicum Vivem ....
      J. Froben Basel 1522 Contemporary blind tooled calf; rubbed but very sound (without clasps and minor chipping to head and tail of spine) Folio . FIRST EDITION of this important commentary of St. Augustine's "City of God" by Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) who was the greatest Spanish humanist and educational theorist of the sixteenth century. Vives was commissioned for this work by his close friend Erasmus who highly praises his talents in his preface. "Erasmus persuaded Vives to edit Augustine's De Civitate Dei for the projected Froben edition of the Father's works. Vives began the task in January 1521, sending his text and commentary to Basel in installments, the last in July 1522 ... Direct collaboration, however, placed a strain on the relationship of the two men, as Erasmus pressed Vives to complete the project quickly. In July 1522 Vives complained to Cranevelt of the harshness of Erasmus' letters and of his threats that Froben would publish an incomplete version of the work ... Vives suffered from insomnia, and in August 1522, shortly after sending the last books to Basel, fell seriously ill. De Civitate Dei was published in September, with an introductory letter by Erasmus, a eulogy of Erasmus by Vives, and the dedicatory epistle to Henry VIII" (Contemporaries of Erasmus, III, pp. 409-13). Vives had sought the patronage of Henry VIII of England through the offices of Thomas More. When that failed he dedicated the present work to Henry. This work also led to some friction between the two great humanists. "Early in 1525 Erasmus had complained to Vives that sales of the edition were poor, blaming this on the length of Vives' commentary and pointing out that he had advised brevity. In October 1527 he informed Vives that the Froben press wished to delay reprinting De civitatee Dei for the new collected works of Augustine because many copies of Vives' edition remained unsold. When Vives countered that he had heard from the bookseller Franz Birckmann that sales were going well, Erasmus harshly denied this claim, adding the cutting remark that Vives should write something useful ... The quarrel appeared to be patched up when Vives sent Eramus a conciliatory letter and the Froben press decided to reprint De Civitate Dei, ... Despite Erasmus' negative reaction, Vives' commentary was a valuable contribution to the elucidation of Augustinian thought and was republished frequently, in English and French translations as well as in Latin" (ibid.). A monumental publication of the great Froben press which spared no effort to provide a magnificent example of his printing art and the handsome use of his stock of decorative woodcuts by Hans Holbein and Urs Graff. The beautiful exlibris of Hector Pömer at one time was thought to be by Duerer (cf. Illustrated Bartsch, X, no. 163, 169) but was the work of Hans Sebald Beham (Pauli, Beham, 1352). The large woodcut (30 x 19.5 cm) displays the families coat of arms with St. Laurentius standing to one side with a palm branch in his left hand and a roasting grill in his right (symbol of his martyrdom); all within architectural borders. At the bottom is the family motto "Omnia munda munids" repeated in Hebrew and Greek. The woodcutter’s initials and date in bottom right corner ("R.A. 1525"). There are extensive neat annotations, presumably by Hector Pömer, in red ink including a purchase inscription on the last page below the printer's device which is dated 7 February 1524. A later owner, probably mid-16th century, has also added numerous annotations in a brown ink, some of which are quite fascinating. For example on page 485 where St. Augustine writes: "Auctuos est autem numerus gentium multo amplius quez linguarum. Nam & in Africa barbaras gentes in una lingua plurimas novimus, & homines quidem multiplicato genere huano, ad insulas inhabitantes navigio transire potuisse. quisd ambigat." Our reader writes -- "etiam in Americam? Negat Augustinus cap. 9 huius libri, Lactantium aliosq sequitus, qui negabant dati Antipodas." Provenance: Purchase inscription 7 February 1524 on last page; Pömer's bookplate; 19th century bookplate of the "Baptist Education Society of the State of New York."; Late 19th century blind pressure stamp of Colgate University (deaccessioned). [22] 787, [1] pp. Elaborate historiated woodcut title-border; four part woodcut border for first page of text with architectural sides and putti in various scholarly poses at top and bottom with the initials "H.H." (Hans Holbein); the third woodcut border on a1 is signed "VG" (Urs Graff) and features a central shield on which is printed "Io. Frob. typis excvdebat" and four lines in Greek, beautiful white on black architectural columns and putti. The final woodcut border depicting figures, from the classics and mythology, surrounding Froben's woodcut device. Woodcut historiated headpieces and woodcut initials throughout. A very wide margined copy. Purchase inscription at the bottom of the last page dated "1524". The work is annotated throughout in the same very neat hand all in red ink. There are also annotations in black somewhat later in the 16th century (see below). Some very minor handsoiling in the blank margins of a few leaves; minimal damp stain in the extreme outer edges of a few leaves. Fine copy with the superb full-page woodcut exlibris of Hector Pömer with woodcutter's initials "R.A." and dated "1525." §

PEROTTUS NICOLAUS
Cornucopiae, Sive Lingue Latine Commentarii Diligentissime Recogniti, Atque Ex Archetypo Emendati.
      Thusculani, (in Fine): Thusculani, Apud Benacum in Aedibus Alexandri Paganini. Mense Aprili, 1522. 1522. [Filologia-Raro] (cm. 23,6) ottima piena pergamena sec. XVII, nervetti e titolo calligrafato al dorso.-- cc. 50, colonne 1268, l' ultima carta con colophon e registro è bianca al verso. Testo su due colonne, magnifica bordura xilografica al frontis raffigurata nel volume "200 decorative title-pages" e citata in "Handbook Renaissance Ornament" tavv. 18-19 dove è attribuita al Taccuini. Bella ed elegantissima edizione della più importante opera del Perottus; essa costituisce un commentario sui libri degli spettacoli ed è un prezioso commento degli epigrammi di Marziale nonchè un lessico ragionato della lingua latina. Sembra che il Perottus avesse rinunciato a terminare il commento di alcuni epigrammi del Marziale perchè saturi di oscenità. L' opera è stampata con singolari e minutissimi caratteri. Alessandro Paganino era in possesso delle matrici e dei punzoni di tipo arabo usati per stampare il Corano. Qualche insignificante macchiolina e lievi tracce di polvere all' inizio e in fine, ma esemplare fresco, bello e nitido ottimamente conservato considerato l' uso pratico cui era destinato. AVICENNE, Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina, dit;
Liber canonis totius medicine.
AUGUSTINE, Saint: VIVES, Juan Luis
Io. Frobenius lectori S.D. En habes . Aurelii Augustini, opus absolutissimum, de civitate Dei, magnis sudoribus emendatum . per virum clarissimum & undequaque doctissimum Ioan. Lodovicum Vivem .
      J. Froben, Basel 1522 - Contemporary blind tooled calf; rubbed but very sound (without clasps and minor chipping to head and tail of spine) Folio . Vives began the task in January 1521, sending his text and commentary to Basel in installments, the last in July 1522 . Direct collaboration, however, placed a strain on the relationship of the two men, as Erasmus pressed Vives to complete the project quickly. In July 1522 Vives complained to Cranevelt of the harshness of Erasmus' letters and of his threats that Froben would publish an incomplete version of the work . When Vives countered that he had heard from the bookseller Franz Birckmann that sales were going well, Erasmus harshly denied this claim, adding the cutting remark that Vives should write something useful . The quarrel appeared to be patched up when Vives sent Eramus a conciliatory letter and the Froben press decided to reprint De Civitate Dei, . The woodcutter?s initials and date in bottom right corner ("R.A. 9 huius libri, Lactantium aliosq sequitus, qui negabant dati Antipodas." Provenan

PEROTTUS NICOLAUS
Cornucopiae, Sive Lingue Latine Commentarii Diligentissime Recogniti, Atque Ex Archetypo Emendati.
(in fine): Thusculani, Apud Benacum in Aedibus Alexandri Paganini. Mense Aprili, 1522, Thusculani - [Filologia-Raro] (cm. 23,6) ottima piena pergamena sec. * Sander 5534; * Sandy "Classical Scholarships" II 71; * Baroncelli 24; * Balsamo "Origini del corsivo" pp. 79-101; * Nuovo "Alessandro Paganino" 60; * Choix 12181; * Biblioteca Panizzi 4449; * Brunet IV 506; * Graesse V 205; * Bm. Plautus.
Mense Iulio. , 1522 - a little faint foxing, title somewhat stained around old gently washed inscriptions, some edges a bit dampmarked, a few small ink marks, ff. [xiv], 284, 8vo., late nineteenth century vellum, smooth backstrip divided by wide gilt dentelle rolls, red morocco label in second compartment, the rest with central butterfly-shape gilt decoration, somewhat soiled, endpapers with armorial bookplate (James Whittle, struck through), bookseller?s ticket, and a bibliographic note, good The first and only Aldine edition of Plautus, edited by Franciscus Asulanus (Francesco Torresani). The preface states that the basis of the text was a version prepared by Aldus Manutius and Erasmus. In a letter to Erasmus of 1517, Andrea Torresani, Francesco?s father, recalls the work of Aldus and Erasmus: ?And then the Plautus, how much effort [Aldus] expended on that, in which you gave him a great deal of help, for he used you to stick together, as it were, the lines of this Latin Siren? (Ep. 589). Despite this, Dibdin asserts that there are relatively few textual differences between this and the Giunta edition of the same year; Joseph Dane suggests the reason is that Erasmus and Aldus were not preparing an edition but instead working on metre (vide pp. 121-3 of ?On Metrical Confusion and Consensus in Early Editions of Terence? in Humanistica Lovaniensia, vol. XLVIII). (CNCE 37687; Renouard p. 94.2; Adams P1487; Dibdin II 308; Schweiger II 761; Goldsmid 189; Moss II 460; BM STC 524) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ALESSANDRI Alessandro A.
Genialium dierum libri sex, varia ac recondita eruditione referti.

Tertia Pars Repertorium seu Dictionarium Morale utriusque Testamenti Fratris Petri Berchorii.
[In fine:] opera et impensis Claudii Chevallon, 1522. [Paris, Claude Chevallon, 1522].

[colophon: Wittenberg: Nickell Schyrlentz, 1522]. Small 4to (18.5 cm; 7.25"). [20] ff. Highly important two part publication treating first the removal of sacred images and secondly begging. The first part of this work was in contrast to the writings of Emser (Das man der heylige[n] bilder yn den kirche[n] nit abthon noch vnehren soll Vnnd das sie yn der schrifft nyndert verbotte[n] seyn, {Dresden, 1524}, but dated in preface as April 1522) and Eck (De non tollendis Christi & sanctorum Imaginibus, {Ingolstadt, 1522}) who both opposed removal of images. The text is printed in gothic type without woodcut initials. The title-page has a woodcut single-element architectural border, this with Abraham and Isaac below the central panel on their way to the sacrificial altar, and with Adam and Eve to the reader's left and right. Putti blow trumpets at mid-center, and above them a device of we're not sure what nature appears to be suspended by decorated cords passing through convenient holes in the vault of the heavens. WorldCat locates four North American copies, one of which has been deaccessioned, and COPAC locates only two copies (variant title-pages), at the British Library. VD16 B6214. Removed from a nonce volume. A copy closely trimmed, costing small portion of left edge of title-page border and one line of text at top of each page of leaf A3; some other leaves also trimmed to take top portions of letters, this impacting (but generally not devastating) reader comprehension; priced accordingly. Otherwise, dust-soiling and stains; some old pencilling and no other markings.

Perotti, Niccolo
Cornucopiae, sive linguae latinae commentarii diligentissime recogniti
Thusculani apud Benacum [Toscolano]: in aedibus Alexandri Paganini, in mense, 1522. Thick 4to (22 x 14 cm.). Title within decorative border. Latin text, printed in Paganini's italic type, in two enumerated columns. [50] leaves, 1268 [i.e., 1270] columns. Recased in early vellum, slightly worn but sound and unwarped; title page has some minor abrasions, without loss; text is clean and fresh, a bit tight in margins; occasional marginal worming. Nuovo, A. Alessandro Paganino 60; Adams; P723; BM STC Italy; p. 499 . A notable book in the history of printing by the interesting printer-publisher, Alessandro Paganino of Toscolano, whose admiration for Aldus Manutius is evident in the jocular tribute to him on the title page (" non ante impressa, nisi per Aldum manutium, idq[ue] labore, et diligentia Iucundi nostri Veronensis ... ). The Aldine italic type itself had become the virtual symbol of the humanistic tradition which Aldus was spreading with his cheap and handy editions; imitators and counterfeits multiplied all over Europe. Paganino was also clearly inspired by the Venetian master's innovations, but in a way which stimulated him to experiement and create in the Aldine tradition. In this innovative setting of Perotti's lexicographical commentaries on the firs book of Martial's Epigrams, follwed by similar works by various authors -- constituting a virtual encyclopedic lexicon of Latin - Paganini's design of a text displayed in enumerated columnsand lettered lines constitued a creative in the presention of a lengthy and complex text. His typeface, too, a smaller and more upright italic, is noteworthy. As Luigi Balsamo writes, "Even more interesting [among the followers of Aldus] was ... printer-publisher Alessandro Paganino of Toscolano, whose admiration for Aldus became a strong stimulus to achieve something new in the field of typography. Although Brunet defined the so-called "Paganini" type as bizarre, there were actually no less than five distinct designs. They reflected the successive phases of a graphic study intended as the progressive assimilation of the Roman and italic types. Pagnini's laborious experimentation resulted in an archaic imprint that influenced not only the design of type but the entire graphic composition of the page. Indeed it was Paganini who had recognized Aldus's commitment to innovation as an example worthy of being followed.- Luigi Balsamo "Legibility and Migration," 1997

BOCCACCIO.
Il Decamerone. [Ed. A. P. Manutius].
Venice, Aldo & Andrea Torresani, November 1522. First Aldine edition, embodying a new text, and thefirst containing the three added Novelle (not by Boccaccio) at end.In the prefatory letter addressed to Roberto Magio, the printer Andrea Torresani – Aldus’ father-in-law – says that the text was prepared and corrected by Aldus himself. If this is true it is the only vernacular text that Aldus edited. Perhaps, Martin Davies suggests, Torresani means he just gathered the material, which he might then have given to say a Bembo or Navagero to edit. Renouard says that the edition served as textual basis for the Giunta edition of 1527, noting “Dans la Bibliothèque Médicis, à Florence, on en conserve l’exemplaire que les Junte ont en 1527 donné pour copie à leurs compositeurs”.This is the copy listed in the Quaritch Aldine catalogue of 1929, formerly in the library of the Earl of Powis.

Plautus; Aldus
Comoediae
1522. ALDUS, ERASMUS, AND THE REVIVAL OF SECULAR DRAMA IN RENAISSANCE EUROPE PLAUTUS, Titus Maccius. Comoediae [ed. Franciscus Asulanus]. Collation: *6 **8 a-z8 A-M8 N4, complete. [14], 284 ff. With an Aldine anchor on title-page and verso of final leaf. Printed in italic letter. Bound in nineteenth-century Italian vellum, red edges. Venice: In aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Asulani Soceri, July 1522. |~||~||~||~||~| First and Only Aldine edition. In his preface Franciscus Asolanus explains that for this edition he used the text of Plautus upon which Erasmus worked in collaboration with Aldus Manutius in 1508; Erasmus was paid twenty gold florins for his efforts. The discovery of a ninth-century MS of the plays of Plautus by the bookhunter Poggio Bracciolini, c. 1430, gave rise to many other manuscripts which were then studied, imitated, and performed in Rome and elsewhere. The Bracciolini MS (now Vat. lat 3870) was annotated by Niccolo Niccoli; its arrival in Rome marks the beginning of one of the Renaissance's most long-lasting cultural achievements, the revival of secular drama. Provenance: early inscription on title: "Gio. Ant. Lorenzani" (16th-century?), with neat three -quarters of a page manuscript notations presumably by Lorenzani on the verso of the title-page. -- F. Harrison -- Presented to St. Stephen's College Library, with bookplate. Binding worn at top edge of lower cover; pin-sized wormhole through latter half of text; some discolouration or traces of damp. Vellum split for four inches on the front joint. Overall a very good copy. Renouard 94:2. Adams P-1487.

BOCCACCIO.

Epistola ... de exustione librorum Lutheri,. & Monachorum Dominicanae factionis nequitia, ad Germaniae proceres, & cives. O.O., Dr. u. J.
(Basel, V. Curio, 1522).. Kl.-4to. 8 Bl. Nov. 1520 in Köln. Exclamatio in incendium Lutheranum etc." Ulrich v. Hutten selbst zugeschrieben (so Holzmann/Boh. 58). Kalkoff (Ulrich v.

Binding: Re-sewn and re-cased in seventeenth-century carta rustica; no free endleaves. Provenance and annotation: 'Franciscus Justinie[?]', signature, partially erased, on titlepage. Pen trials on f. 53v and f. 54r, some colour added to the illustration on f. 25. Walter Pagel (1896--1983); B. E. J. Pagel (1930--2007). References: Putti pp. 148--50; EDIT16 CNCE 5421; Wellcome 782; Garrison--Morton 368; Norman 188; Waller 907. First edition. A second edition, slightly enlarged, was issued by Faelli in 1523, followed by reprints, Strasbourg, 1530 and Venice 1535. § This famous work introduced several innovations in anatomy and anatomical illustration and is among the most important precursors of Vesalius. 'Berengario was the author of the first [anatomical] illustrations made from nature. His innate feeling for the graphic arts seems to have aided him considerably in his first attempts' (Choulant p. 138). Several of Berengario's illustrations, such as those of the veins on f. 67r, show the influence of Leonardo (Herlinger p. 83). This set of anatomical illustrations is by far the most extensive that had appeared up to this time. The male skeleton and muscle figures are displayed against landscape backgrounds in the way that would be followed by Estienne and Vesalius. The female figures are equally striking and, in contrast to the male figures, are revealed in bedrooms, or holding sheets (or shrouds?) behind themselves. Both the situation and the poses of the figures giving them an erotic charge; they are modelled on works of art and inspired Estienne's female figures, but not those of Vesalius. As Talvacchia remarks 'artistic conventions for the display of the eroticized female body shared those developed for the demonstration of female sexual organs' (Talvacchia pp. 169--70). The last five woodcuts seem to have been intended for artists. The Isagogae breves is a condensed version of Berengario's Commentaria on Mondino's anatomy (1521) and uses many of the same woodcuts, but with significant revisions and additions. The Commentaria was printed at Bologna by Girolamo de Benedetto whom Choulant suggests may have cut the blocks. Three of the woodcuts which Choulant says were intended for artists are omitted, but the illustration of two uteri on f. 25r is new, as is the muscleman on f.69r. The second edition, printed in the following year, added three more anatomical woodcuts and revisions to other woodcuts. Garrison--Morton notes that this work includes a description of the valves of the heart and Pagel discusses Berengario's views on the disputed septum of the heart in the Commentaria (William Harvey's Biological Ideas, p. 159). Though he does not mention the Isagogae specifically he would no doubt have been interested in what Berengario says here about the veins and the heart. Berengario was born in Carpi, near Modena, the son of a surgeon. He took is MD at Bologna and taught surgery first at Pavia, then at Bologna. After 1527 he was in Ferrara and Rome where he was the first to use mercury in the treatment of syphilis and thereby earned a large fortune. He was regarded by Benvenuto Cellini as 'a great connoisseur in the arts of design' (quoted by Choulant, p. 136). Literature: Ludwig Choulant, trs and annotated by Mortimer Frank, History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration (1945) pp. 136--142; Vittorio Putti, Berengario da Carpi; saggio biografico e bibliografico, seguito dalla traduzione del "De fractura calvae sive cranei" (1937); Robert Herrlinger, History of medical illustration (1970), pp. 80--83; Bette Talvacchia, Taking Positions.
