[Augsburg : Melchior Ramminger], 1522. 4to, 6ff. Unpaginated. Modern wrappers, slightly worn, internally crisp and clean. First printing of this rare letter on the Ten Commandments etc. A search in OCLC and KVK yielded a small number of copies, many apparently in microfilm, but I suspect there are originals in all the obvious places, many bound up perhaps in collections of sermons by Luther. Augsburg, M. Ramminger 1522. Kl.-4to. 6 Bl. Mit ornamentaler Holzschn.-Titelbordüre. Br. (etwas braunfl., wenige Marginalien v. alter Hand).

Basle: Thomas Wolf. , 1522 title within a woodcut architectural border, small area of rubbing to edge of border, decorative woodcut intitals, the larger ones enclosing playing hares, large woodcut printer’s device on the last leaf, ff. [4], 88, [4], 8vo., mod. quarter calf and marbled boards, the backstrip ruled in blind, good Boethius (c.475-c.525), celebrated philosopher and Roman consul, completed ‘De consolatione philosophiae’ in prison towards the end of his life, when he had fallen into disgrace after being involved in a plot against the ruler of Rome. In this work which was influential work throughout the Middle Ages, he sought to establish a bridge between classical philosophy and christian scholastic thought. The work attracted a large number of commentators and imitators, inspired philosophy as well as literature, and was considered most suitable for use in schools. It also inspired great authors like Chaucer and Dante. The additional treatises were basic sources for ideas on the organisation of education and the duties of students, and, especially during the Renaissance, on all questions relating to education. Germany, ca. 1522. Magnificent woodcut; The escutcheon depicts the head of a moor with head-band, the crest of the helm consists of the bust of a moor between the antlers of a deer. Above 2 lines of text: "Insignia Hartmanni Maurill. Doctoris, Caesarei iudicii adsessoris" and underneath: "Virtus clara aeternaq. habetur". Border of the woodcut: 13,1 x 11,2 cm on leaf of 22 x 14 cm.*Hollstein III, 282. Pauli app. 1354a. Warnecke, Heraldische Kunstblätter, III, 209. Passavant III, 221 No. 321 (Dürer). Geisberg, No. 314, ill. p. 294. Very rare, only state of this beautiful armorial plate, which was formerly ascribed by Heller No. 2145 and others to Dürer. Possibly this plate was also used as ex-libris. "There can be no doubt, that many of the plates published in the . 'Heraldische Kunstblätter' have been used as Ex-libris; with most of them this is evident at first sight" (Warnecke, Rare Book-plates, London 1894, page 2). "Early German bookplates are principally armorial in subject. The use of armorial bookplates was a natural consequence of a way of life in which heraldry played such an important function" (Johnson, A treasury of bookplates, page 4). Hartmann Maurus (Moer), counsellor of the elector of Cologne, professor of law and imperial court assessor, was the author of an important eye-witness account of the coronation of Charles V at Aachen in October 1520. - Fine impression on laid paper, with ample margins, very well preserved.[(5559)]

| Moriae Encomium nunc postremum ab ipso autore religiose recognitum, una cum alijs aliquot libellis, non minus eruditis quam amoenis, quorum omnium titulos, proxima pagella loquetur.

Basel, Johann Frobenius, 1522. Sm.8vo. 19th century half calf, spine gilt. With finely designed allegorical borders on title, full-page woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf, the two first pages within charming four-part woodcut borders, and numerous woodcut initials in text. 408, (16) pp. Rare early Frobenius edition of Erasmus "Stultitiae Laus". The present edition contains commentary by Georg Listrius and includes some smaller treatises: "Ludus Senecae De morte Claudij Caesaris", and "Synesius De laudibus Calvitij", preceeding the main text and both with explanatory notes by Beatus Rhenanus. At the end the letter by Erasmus addressed to Martinus Dorpius, dated Antwerp, 1515, is added as well. The "Praise of Folly" by Erasmus from Rotterdam (1467-1536), was first published at Paris in 1509, and was to become one of the most popular books of the Reformation. The present edition is finely printed with the main text in Roman type and the comments in Italics nicely arranged aside and underneath the text, and with short references printed in the margins. The text occasionally includes also a fine Greek type, and is nicely adorned with woodcut initials. The beautiful woodcut border on title comprises the allegorical figures of virtues and vices, and includes a curious scene of death shooting arrows towards "Fortuna" riding on horse-back and wounding instead a knight standing at the other side. Good copy, from the library of Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park, with their book-label, and with the bookplate of J. Mouchet. Vander Haeghen p. 123; STC German p. 282.

8vo. 18th-century mottled calf, gilt and decorated spine with title lettered in gold on red morocco title label, red edges. Woodcut Aldine printer's device on title and verso of last blank. (4), 5-204 ff. (Collation a-z8, A-B8, C4). Very rare first Aldine edition of Justinus' epitome of the historical works by Trogus Pompeius (ff. 4-147) and Nepos (ff. 148-204). The work is edited by Franciscus Asulanus. He was the son of Andrea Asulanus, the Venetian printer who also was involved with the printing of this work. Trogus Pompeius was a freed slave of the triumvir Pompey, who wrote his historical work at the end of the first century BC. In the 3rd century Justinus collected, as he writes in his preface, the most important and interesting passages from the Historiae Philippicae by Pompeius Trogus, a voluminous work of 44 books. He picked out the memorable sayings and anecdotes, which was more in tune with contemporary taste, and the original work by Trogus vanished. Trogus's work originally concentrated on the rise and history of the Macedonian monarchy, but Justinus digressed and elaborated to the history of the Roman empire. The Epitome was extremely popular in the Middle Ages and was first published in 1470 in Venice. Renouard describes this edition as being most rare, and as being much more correct than the fifteenth- and early 16th-century editions which preceded it ('Edition fort rare, et bien plus correcte que toutes les precedentes du quinzieme siecle et du commencement du seizieme'). Dibdin agrees, describing our edition as 'very rare and correct'.The second work on the lives of the emperors is by Cornelius Nepos, although until 1569 these Vitae were commonly mis-attributed to the fourth-century writer Aemylius Probus, but it is now generally accepted that the author is Cornelius Nepos (99-24 B.C.) who was well acquainted with Cicero, Pomponius Atticus and Catullus. The present work, together with two biographies on Cato and Atticus, is all that is left from his writings. Nepos is the first biographer known by name, and he was also the first biographer to compare the Romans with foreigners. The work was first published at Venice, in 1471. Fine copy.- (Old shelf marks in ink on inside of front cover; ownership's entry in ink on title erased). UCLA 209; Renouard p. 96, no.9; Adams J-723; STC Italian p. 683.

Renouard describes this edition as being most rare, and as being much more correct than the fifteenth- and early 16th-century editions which preceded it ('Édition fort rare, et bien plus correcte que toutes les précédentes du quinzième siècle et du commencement du seizième'). 683.

8vo. Contemporary limp vellum with title in ink on spine, parts of ties preserved. Woodcut Aldine printer's device on title and verso of last leaf. (12), 262 [i.e. 260; f. 158 numbered 158-160], (2) ff. [Collation: aa8 bb4 a-t8 u6 A-N8]. Rare first and only Aldine edition of the first printed work on ancient Roman coinage and weights & measures, written by the great French humanist Guillaume Bude'. This pioneering study of Roman coinage was the best book on the subject written up to that time. It was this work which gained Bude' the greatest reputation. Though his activities were varied, his reputation as a humanist of the greatest erudition was established in 1515 with the publication of De asse et partibus eius: a treatise on Roman coinage. The treatise, however, also contains a manifesto arguing for the necessity of humanism in a Christian education. Bude' argues that the truly educated Christian must study not just the Bible and the writings of the church fathers, but all types and forms of knowledge (also on coinage) so that he may recognize truth when he sees it. Although recognized by Bude's contemporaries as a valuable restatement of humanist aims and principles, De asse also attracted criticism because of its heavy, obscure, and ornate style. According to Brunet and Renouard a copy of this work was printed on vellum for the famous bibliophile Jean Grolier (1479-1565), to whom this book is dedicated. This Aldine edition was preceded by two others, printed in Paris in 1514 and 1516 respectively by Badius Ascensius. A French extract of this work appeared in 1522 at Galliot de Pre' in Paris, the Italian translation was printed in 1562 at Giunta in Florence.Guillaume Bude' (1468-1540) was a French scholar. He went to the University of Orleans to study law, but for several years, being possessed of ample means, he led an idle and dissipated life. When about 24 years of age he was seized with a sudden passion for study, and made rapid progress, particularly in the Latin and Greek languages. He was held in high esteem by Francis I, who was persuaded by him, and by Jean du Bellay, bishop of Narbonne, to found the Collegium Trilingue, afterwards the College de France, and the library at Fontainebleau, which was removed to Paris and was the origin of the Bibliotheque Nationale. He also induced Francis to refrain from prohibiting printing in France, which had been advised by the Sorbonne in 1533. Guillaume Bude' corresponded with the most learned men of his time, amongst them Erasmus, who called him the 'marvel of France', and Thomas More. Fine copy, with contemp. ms. annotations ink. Church Father Athanasius against the world Strasburg, Joannes Knobloch d. Ält., March 1522. Folio. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, spine and both covers richly tooled in blind with floral rolls around a centrepiece with floral motives, both original clasps and catches present. Printed title in magnificent full-page woodcut frame, illustrating the life of Athanasius, beautifully coloured by a contemporary hand. Nice woodcut initials. Many claves of coloured fabric. (6), CCCXIIII, (10) lvs. Fourth edition of the Opera omnia (the first published in Strasbourg) in Latin translation of Athanasius of Alexandria (298-373), the bishop of Alexandria, revered as a saint by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Roman Catholics have declared him one of the 33 Doctors of the Church. The Athanasian Creed is traditionally ascribed to him. Athanasius is best known for his lifelong fight against the heresy of Arianism. In about 314, when Athanasius was a deacon, a presbyter named Arius began teaching that there was a time before God the Father begat Jesus Christ when the latter did not exist. Athanasius responded that the Father's begetting of the son, or uttering of the word, was an eternal relationship between them, not an event that took place within time. In 328 he succeeded Alexander as bishop of Alexandria. As a result of rises and falls in Arianism's influence, he was banished from Alexandria only to be later restored on at least five separate occasions. This gave rise to the expression "Athanasius contra mundo" ("Athanasius against the world").Athanasius was also the first to list the same 27 books of the New Testament that are in use today. Up until his Easter letter, various similar lists were in use. However, his list was the one that was eventually ratified by a series of synods and came to be universally recognized as the New Testament canon. He also wrote a biography of Anthony the Great, the most well-known Father of the desert, that later served as an inspiration to Christian monastics in both the East and the West. Some of his works had been already printed before 1500. The first edition of his Opera was published in Paris in 1518, followed by editions in 1519 and 1520. Translators of the works collected in this edition were Christophorus Porsena, Ambrosius Monachus,Angelus Politiano, and Joannes Capnionus. Added is the Paraclesis of Erasmus together with Erasmus's Vita of Athanasius. Contents:- f. (1)r: title-page, verso blank.- f. (2)r: Note by the publisher Joannes Knobloch to the learned readers, dated Stasbourg, March 1522.- f. (2)v-(5)r: Erasmus's 'Paraclesis ad lectorem pium'.- f. (5)v-(6)v: Some notes on Athanasius.- f. Ir-CCXXXVIv: Commentarii in Epistolas Pauili: Athanasius's commentaries on the Epistles by St. Paul.- f. CCXXXVIIr-CCXLIXr: Contra Gentiles liber primus: together with:- f. CCXLIXr-CCLXIIr: De incarnatione verbi, eiusque ad nos per corpus adventu, liber secundus, forming two parts of a single work. Jerome (De script. Eccl.) refers to them as 'Adversus Gentes libri duo'. Both books are mainly directed against the Gentiles, but the refutation is carried out with more special reference to the beliefs and worship of the heathen. Refuring idolatry, his aim is to vindicate the dignity and reasonsbleness of the Christian Faith. Next to Origen's De principiis, these two works are the first attempt to construct a scientific system of the Christian religion upon certain fundamental ideas of God and world, sin and redemption, and they form the fruit of the positive apology in the Greek Church.- f. CCLXIIv-CCLXXIv: Disputatio contra Arrium. Athanasius's work against Arianism.- f. CCLXXIV-CCLXXIVr: In psalmos opusculum: the few pages that are left from his commentary on the psalms.- f. CCLXXVIIIv-CCXCv : Epistolae nonnullae Romanorum pontificum ad Athanasium, & Athanasii ad eundem: Letter of Athanasius to Pope Marcus together with his answer (CCLXXVIIIv-CCLXXIXv); letter of Pope Julius in favour of Athanasius to the eastern bishops, together with their answer and the answer of Julius (CCLXXIXv-CCLXXXVr); two letters of Athanasius to Popa Julius on the oppression by the followers of Arius and his answers (CCLXXXVr-CCXCv). - f. XXXCIr-CCXCVr: Liber Sancti Athanasii ... de variis quaestionibus ad Antiochum principem de Graeco in Latinum nuper traductus a Joanne Reuchlin.- f. Printer's device and full-page woodcut illustration of a branching tree in second work. 2 parts in one. 4to. [26]; [19]ff. 20th century morocco-backed boards. 1522. I) Second edition of this dialogue which wrote Latomus wrote following the establishment of the controversial Collegium Trilingue (Latin, Greek, and Hebrew) at the University of Louvain thanks to a bequest of Jéröme de Busleyden in 1517. The college became the focus for a fierce academic pursuit between the humanistic educational principles of Erasmus, and the opposing traditional views of the philistine majority of scholars such as Latomus who held that the teaching of of Greek and Hebrew to students of theology was pernicious rather than beneficial. Although Latomus had not mentioned Erasmus by name, the latter still responded with Apologia contra Latomi dialogum. also in 1519. Our edition of Latomus' dialogue must have been printed after Erasmus' reply since there is a reference to Erasmus' Apologia at the top of the errata leaf. It also contains the annotations of Thomas Carinus' at the end. The first edition appeared in Antwerp, also in 1519 (NK 1326). II) Only edition of this tlegal treatise which discusses difficult points of law. Some quite severe marginal worming throughout, sometimes touching text, some waterstaining. I) This edition not in Adams. II) Moreau 3.358.

| Untitled [Verso - Oceani Occidentalis Sev Terrae Novae Tabvla]
|
An Original Antique Map From Jonathan Potter. Published in Lyon, 1522 -1535. A woodblock engraving. Coloured. 37.5 x 28.5cms [14.75 x 11.25ins] A most important map - one of the earliest to concentrate on and display the New World discoveries. This map was first published in Laurent Fries' 1522 reduced-size version of Martin Waldseemuller's 1513 atlas which had included the so-called 'Admiral's map', supposedly based directly on Columbus's reports. However, the Fries copy also includes one or two differences and innovations of its own; most notable is the vignette of a group of cannibals in South America with an opossum nearby, a result of Vespucci's reports from the region. The map also incorporates 'modern' reports and discoveries as the name Parias is shown in North America and a Spanish flag flies over Cuba, here called Isabella Insul. Also of particular note is the passage of text below Hispaniola describing Columbus' discoveries. Columbus is then mentioned again in the verso text with relation to the protestations at the use of the name "America" for the New World - a fine example of an unsuccessful protest!. Burden remarks that the 1535 edition of the atlas, in which this particular example appeared, was published by Michael Servetus who was burned alive for heresy and copies of the book were destroyed at the behest of John Calvin. The map is thus more scarce than might otherwise have been the case. The original Waldseemuller publication is now very scarce and expensive, and we have not been able to offer a copy of this map, here a good example boldly and suitably hand-coloured, for many years. A rare opportunity to own this most important map. Burden, The Mapping Of North America, 4.
