"LACTANCE;"
Divinarum institutionnum libri septem. De ira Dei, Liber I. De opificio Dei, Liber I. Epitome in libros suos liber acephalos.
BOETHIUS, Anicius Manlius
Boetius de consolatione philosophica & de disciplina Scholarium... Additum est Carmen iuvenile Sulpitti
Lyon: Iohnnes Clein, 1515. [c.1515]. 4to. pp. [280]. p.[280 blank]. Colophon dated "nono kale[n]das Octobris" (23 Sept.). Title page printed in red and black inside woodcut architectural border. Woodcut printer's device (Sylvestre 132). Printed in Roman font with the surrounding commentaries printed in Gothic. Text contains decorative initials. Bound in contemporary blind stamped paneled calf boards; re-backed preserving original spine. Later antique endpapers with inscription on front-free endpaper dated "1925"; front and rear blank fly-leaves worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional marginalia in an old hand (i.e. several small inscriptions written on the title page); minor spotting; lower corner of leaf c7 clipped in margin;. The hinges and inner margins to the first gathering are neatly strengthened / repaired. The outer edges to this same gathering show some wear - i.e. a few marginal tears (sealed), and light soiling. The bottom margins on conjugate leaves a2 and a7 are trimmed about !" (12 mm). Anicius Manlius Boethius (480-524) was a late Roman philosopher and statesman. He became embroiled in a plot against Theodoric, the Ostrogothic ruler of Rome, and was eventually executed. Boethius wrote his most famous work, the "Consolation of Philosophy," while awaiting his fate in prison. The five sections discuss the capriciousness of fortune, the influence of good and evil, and the nature of God's control over the universe (i.e. free will, providence and fate). The work employs the Platonic notion of an ascent of the soul to the Godhead through a process of contemplation and reflection. The imagery is predominately pagan; however, the author himself was strongly influenced by Christian thought. Boethius's work was immensely influential throughout the middle ages. Commentaries are provided by Josse Badius (1462-1535) and Thomas Wallensis (the latter wrongly ascribed to Thomas Aquinas). The "Ascensio explanato" has separate signatures and divisional title page. [Adams B-2290; BM STC French, p. 73; Renouard, Josse Badius II, 213; Baudrier XII, p. 268].

The Gesta Friderici I by Otto and Rahewin of Freising is preceded by half-title within ornamental border. THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE WORKS OF OTTO OF FRIESING, (c1114-1158). The first printed edition of both the Chronica and Gesta, edited by Joannes Cuspinianus. The first comprised of 8 books, a chronicle of world history from the creation to the years 1146, he represents throughout the conflict between the two cities, of God and of the Devil. The final book of the Chronica consists of the Antichrist, the Second Coming, the Resurrection of the Dead, the Last Judgement and the concommitant beginning of the divine state. An early, if not the first, example of the medieval philosophy of total history. The Gesta, comprised of four books, was began by Otto and completed by his chaplain Rahewin and is a complete life of the inspirational Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, (1122-1190). This work is of great interest not only to scholars of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire, but also the Second and Third Crusade. Whilst Barbarossa himself participated in the Third Crusade, drowning in the River Saleph on the approach to Antioch, Bishop Otto of Freising was a participant in the Second Crusade, and the primary German source for the disasterous campaign of King Conrad III. Otto's veracity as a source is only heightened by his relationship to the highest echelons of Imperial society: he was the half-brother, through his mother, of King Conrad III, and thus also the Uncle of Frederick I Barbarossa himself. NEW TESTAMENT. Latin text.:
NOVUM TESTAMENTUM. Interprete Sebastiano Castalione.
Basel, Ioannes Oporinus, 1553. NEW TESTAMENT, Latin text. Second edition, 8vo, 170 x 95 mm, 6.75" x 3.75", 501 pages with side notes, ruled throughout in reddish brown, title lined in yellow on title page, decorated initials to each book with same early yellow colouring, bound in full contemporary calf, rebacked to style with gilt motif and title between raised bands, covers panelled in blind with gilt motif at corners and in centre, all edges gilt, original red ruled endpapers. Corners worn with slight loss of leather to tips, lower cover worn with some loss of surface and loss of leather on fore-edge, small scrape to upper cover also, inner paper hinges repaired expertly, small armorial bookplate on first pastedown, closed tear to 2 margins, 1 just affecting text, neatly repaired, all still legible, tip missing from 2 corners, a few marginal notes and a few underlinings, both in very pale ink, contents otherwise clean, binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce Latin New Testament. The translator Sebastien Chateillon (1515-1563) was an associate of Calvin and an important figure in the early years of the Reformation. Through the influence of Calvin he was appointed rector of a school in Geneva, from which he was expelled on theological grounds in 1544. He subsequently became a professor of Greek in Basel and there published his famous Latin version of the Bible (1551). Calvin had refused permission for this in Geneva when he realised that Chateillon's translation threatened his authority on a number of points of theological interpretation. A separate edition of Chateillon's New Testament was issued also in 1551. A striking characteristic of Chateillon's Latin version is his use of classical substitutes for recognised ecclesiastical terms such as fanum for templum, respublica for ecclesia, collegium for synagoga. Chateillon also made a French version of the Bible from the Hebrew and Greek published in 1555 also in Basel. See Darlow and Moule, II,1 3720 and II,2 6131.
Roma, Giacomo Mazzocchi, 20 ottobre 1515. "In-4° (mm 210x140). Segnatura: A-Z4, &4, 74, )4. 103 di 104 carte numerate, manca l’ultima carta bianca. Carattere gotico e carattere rotondo. Titolo racchiuso entro cornice architettonica incisa su legno. «È difficile rendere completa giustizia all’Opusculum. Extraordinary copy – belonged to the Italian astronomer, mathematician and archeologist Francesco Bianchini (1662-1729) with his autograph signature on last leaf – of the second edition – the first was printed in 1510 – of the topography of both ancient and modern Rome, containing an important reference to Amerigo Vespucci and his New World discoveries. Since the early Middle Ages guide-books had been written for the use of pilgrims to Rome. Many editions of the Mirabilia were printed before Albertini produced this first modern guide to the city. Besides giving an account of ancient Rome, with information about excavations and archaeological discoveries, he tells us also about the churches and buildings commissioned by Julius II and the artists who decorated them, including the earliest printed reference to Michelangelo. In the third section there is one of the earliest descriptions of the Vatican Library «in qua sunt codices auro et argento sericinisque tegminibus exornati» and mentioning the Codex Vergilianus; the author also refers to the Library’s collections of astronomical and geometrical instruments. A nice woodcut decorated border on title-page. Beautiful copy, some foxing to the first to leaves a small hole on title. 19th century blue paper wrappers. Bookplate of famous collector the Baron Horace Landau in the inner board. Rossetti G, 218; Ascarelli, Mazzocchi, 94; Sander 164; Schudt 431; Harrisse I, 79; Sabin, 665; A. Caldana, Le guide di Roma, Palombi Editori, pp. 155-56 e 239."

ACHILLINI, Alessandro
De Proportionibus Motuum
Woodcut printer!s device at foot of final leaf. 16 leaves. Folio, modern boards. [Bologna: Hieronymus Platonicus de Benedictis, 1515]. The earliest surviving edition of this extremely rare work, a !presentation of Achillini!s research in the field of dynamics. A proponent of the Peripatetic School and an Averroist, Achillini criticizes Bradwardine!s attempts to modify the Aristotelian approach to motion! !!In his treatise on the proportion of motion Achillini raised the question whether more recent mathematicians had detected Aristotle in error on that subject. He further asked whether the proportion of velocities in motions was equal to the proportion of proportions moving to their resistances. He cited Euclid, Averroes, and that stalwart medieval trio, Jordanus, Campanus, and Calculator, more than once. He thought that moderns such as Paul of Venice, Albertutius (i.e. Albert of Saxony), and Thomas Bradwardine erred from the ancient mathematicians because they were unwilling to insert between two extremes like eight and one any mean which was not smaller than the greater number and greater than the lesser number. Jordanus, on the contrary, did not care whether the mean was greater or less than the extreme.!!Thorndike: V, 41! !Stillwell: 718 lists his De distributionibus ac De Proportione motuum, 1494, noting that though it is cited by the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke on the basis of Hain, Maittaire, and Panzer, no copy of that edition is known to exist. Apparently ignorant of the present edition, Stillwell cites its appearance in the Opera omnia, Venice, 1545, as the earliest available.!!Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 5. Achillini (1463-1512), graduated from Bologna in 1484 with his doctorate in both medicine and philosophy. !He is remembered for his considerable activity in research on human anatomy. He gave a good description of the veins of the arm, and he described the seven bones of tarsus, the fornix of the brain, the cerebral ventricles, the infundibulum, and the trochlear nerve. He also described, exactly, the ducts of the submaxillary salivary glands! Finally, to Achillini is attributed the first description of the two ossicles of the ear, the malleus and incus.!!D.S.B., I, p. 46. Achillini was highly regarded as a teacher. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. .

Paris, Joannis Petit, 1515. En folio. Tipografía gótica a dos tamaños. Texto a dos columnas. 78 ff.[i.e.76]. Valuable folio edition of Sacrobosco’s famous Spera with additions and commentaries by Pedro Ciruelo. Sacrobosco discussed the Earth and its place in the Universe. It was required reading by students in all Western European universities for the next four centuries. Very good copy.

LUCRETIUS CARUS, TITUS.
DE RERUM NATURA. VENICE, ALDUS MANUTIUS THE ELDER & ANDREA SOCERI, JANUARY 1515.
8vo. Later vellum, ribbed spine with title lettered in gold. Woodcut printer's device on title and verso of last leaf. (8), 125, (3; the second being blank) leaves. [Collation: *8 a-q8].\n Second issue of Aldus Manutius last printed work, De rerum natura (The nature of things) by Titus Carus Lucretius (ca. 98-55 BC). This issue contains, just as the first issue, some foliation errors of which most are identical in both issues. The differences regarding the first issue are that folio 12 is numbered 11 and 112 as 212. Furthermore the numeral 88 is out of alignment in our issue.Lucretius' scientific epic De rerum natura (usually translated as 'On the Nature of Things' or 'On the Nature of the Universe') is worldwide considered as the immortal masterpiece of Epicurean philosophy. It transmits the ideas of Epicurean physics , which includes Atomism, and psychology. Lucretius was one of the first Epicureans to write in Latin. Very little is known about Lucretius's life; the only certain fact is that he was either a friend or a client of Gaius Memmius, to whom he dedicated De Rerum Natura.According to Lucretius's frequent statements in his poem, the main purpose of the work was to free Gaius Memmius's (and presumably all of mankind's) mind of superstition and the fear of death. He attempts this by expounding the philosophical system of Epicurus, whom Lucretius apotheosizes as the hero of his epic poem.Lucretius identifies superstition (religio in the Latin) with the notion that the gods/supernatural powers created our world or interfere with its operations in any way. He argues against fear of such gods by demonstrating through observations and logical argument that the operations of the world can be accounted for entirely in terms of natural phenomena -- the regular but purposeless motions and interactions of tiny atoms in empty space -- instead of in terms of the will of the gods.In his epic, Lucretius appeals to reason in order to enlighten his readers and persuade them to accept his belief system. Because of its atheistic ideals, De rerum natura almost faded into obscurity as Christianity gained momentum. During the Renaissance however, Lucretius's epic was rediscovered, and it continues to be translated and studied today. Aldus had published the De rerum natura already in 1500, but the present edition 'est cependant bien superieure a' la edition de 1500' (Renouard). De rerum natura is praised for its depiction of nature as a source of life, death, joy, peace, and terror. It is not a poem strictly about the physical world, as Epicureanism also offers guidelines for human conduct and relationships. Lucretius's philosophy of how human beings should live dictates pursuing friendship and avoiding war.Lucretius distributed his argument into six books, beginning each with a highly polished introduction. Books I and II established the main principles of the atomic universe, refuted the rival theories of the pre-Socratic cosmic philosophers Heracleitus, Empedocles, and Anaxagoras, and covertly attacked the Stoics, a school of moralists rivalling that of Epicurus. Book III demonstrated the atomic structure and mortality of the soul and ended with a triumphant sermon on the theme "Death is nothing to us." Book IV described the mechanics of sense perception, thought, and certain bodily functions and condemned sexual passion. Book V described the creation and working of this world and the celestial bodies and the evolution of life and human society. Book VI explained remarkable phenomena of the earth and sky, in particular, thunder and lightning. The poem ends with a description of the plague at Athens, a sombre picture of death contrasting with that of spring and birth in the invocation to Venus, with which it opened. Very good copy with bookplate of Carlo Migliorini pasted on inside front cover.- (Some contemp. corrections (the 'errata' are corrected) and verse numbers supplied in ink

LUCIAN, of Samosata.
Strassbourg, Johannes Schott, 1515. First edition edited and translated by the German humanist (andmusician) Ottmar Nachtgall.Nachtgall introduced the study of Greek in Strassburg, "preparing Greek grammars and texts for the use of adults interested in learning the language" (Contemporaries of Erasmus). In this he worked closely with the Strassburg printer Johann Schott who - along with Matthias Schürer, likewise from Strassburg - was the first to print continuous Greek texts in Germany.Lucian was a favourite with the humanists: More and Erasmus also translated selected dialogues, and certainly his influence can be seen both in the Utopia and Moriae Encomium. As Professor Trapp has written in his recent Panizzi lecture, "Among Greek authors, there can be no doubt that More's favourite was Lucian, in early days at least. The witty Syrian rhetorician, set to 'drive and whoop idolatry out of the world' and 'show all the gods and goddesses to be no better than a company of gypsies' looks a rather uncharacteristic choice for someone who was later to be so much involved with defence of his Church's views... [but] in his dedication More writes of the delight and instruction to be got from Lucian, who is the model moral censor, not arrogant like the philosophers or wanton like the poets, but skilful in thrusting deep without wounding. Moreover, he was much approved by earlier and therefore better Christians such as St. John Chrysostom" (Erasmus, Colet and More: the early Tudor humanists and their books).Provenance: contemporary presentation inscription (trimmed) in an English hand on title, "Johannes Chr[ ] amico suo Ed. Jac[ ];" George Mason, sale 1798 ('Bibliotheca Masoniana'); British Museum (stamp on title and last leaf, and duplicate release stamp dated 1831); John S. Jones, Sep. 18th 1841 (signature on flyleaf).Müller, Bibliographie Strasbourgeoise, Schott no. 35; Adams L1617.

ACHILLINI, Alessandro
De Proportionibus Motuum
Woodcut printer!s device at foot of final leaf. 16 leaves. Folio, modern boards. [Bologna: Hieronymus Platonicus de Benedictis, 1515].p The earliest surviving edition of this extremely rare work, a !presentation of Achillini!s research in the field of dynamics. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica.. First Edition. Hard cover.

Gellius (Aulus)
Noctium Atticarum Libri undeviginti.
Venice: in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri. , 1515 - FIRST ALDINE EDITION, second issue with the corrected spelling ‘duernionem’ on the last leaf, large Aldine printer’s device on the title, and at the foot the ownership inscription ‘Di (?) Gio. Leonardo Canyo 1651’, title lightly soiled, some lower margins with light dampstaining, the last 28 leaves washed, Aldine device on the last leaf, ff. [xxxii] (last blank), 289, [51], 8vo., 20th-century vellum, recently recased using old endpapers, hinges neatly relined, boards panelled in gilt, smooth backstrip divided by gilt rolls, red morocco label, all edges showing early gilt and gauffering, good The Attic Nights of Aulus Gellius, a wide-ranging compilation, is notable as a source of quoted fragments and of stories, and also is one of the two ancient sources (with Suetonius) for Aldus’s own motto, ‘festina lente’. It was a saying of which Augustus was particularly fond, and appears in its Greek form (‘speude bradeos’) in Book X, chapter xi. The editor of this edition, which contains a copious double index, was Giambattista Egnazio, one of the leading figures in the circle of scholars and editors around Aldus Manutius; he stood as executor to Aldus’s will in the same year as this volume was published. It appeared six months after Aldus’s death and was perhaps the last of Aldus’s books to have his personal involvement. Already in Dibdin’s time, fine copies of this edition were ‘becoming very scarce’, and by May 1910 George D. Smith’s catalogue description records the following description: ‘Excessively rare and valuable. Beckford's copy sold £16, Sykes's copy £28, Syston Park copy £42’. However, it is only in the last few years that another resurgence of interest in the author has led to publication of the ‘first collection of essays in any language on Aulus Gellius’, along with books by L. Holford-Strevens and E. Gunderson. (Adams G344; Renouard 1515 / 9; Simon BG 743; Dibdin I 339; Moss I 202) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

IORNANDES (i.e. JORDANES)
De rebus Gothorum.
Augsburg, Johannes Miller, 21 March 1515. With full-page title-woodcut by Hans Burgkmair, some floral woodcut initials, and large woodcut printer's device at the end. 70 unn. leaves. Small folio. Marbled 18th-century boards. (Augsburg, Johannes Miller, 21 March 1515). Editio princeps of Jordanes' (6th cent.) chronicle of the Goths, a primary source of the epoch of the volkerwanderung, together with the exemplary edition of Paulus Diaconus' (or Warnefrid, d. 797) important history of the Langobards, first printed in 1471. Editor of both historical sources is the Augsburg town scribe Conrad Peutinger (1465-1547) with his privilege issued by Emperor Maximilian I, dated 1511, printed on title verso. It is followed by the dedicatory letter to the Italian count Hieronymus Nogarola, in which Peutinger mentions the astronomer Johannes Stabius as co-editor. Nogarola is known for handing over the keys of the town of Vicenza to Maximilian when he was approaching after the siege of Padova. At the end of Jordanes' work, Peutinger gives a short summary of the epoch of the decline of the Roman empire and the migration of nations. The impressing title-woodcut by Burgkmair, executed by Jost Dienecker, according to Muther one of his most important works, shows the Langobardian king Alboinus talking to Athanaric, king of the Goths. - Old name and note on first paste-down, title somewhat dustsoiled and with old ms. note on lower white margin, contemp. ms. marginal notes and underlinings throughout, margins cropped affecting some written or printed marginal notes. - VD 16 J 932; STC (German) 463; Adams J-320; Proctor 10826; Fairfax Murray 229 (illus.); Potthast 682 (Jordanes) and 900 (Paulus Diaconus, "Wirklich vortreffliche Ausgabe"); Brunet III, 567; Apponyi 109 (calls for 64 leaves only); Muther 868; ADB XXV, 565 (Peutinger, "trefflich bearbeitet"). ACHILLINI, Alessandro.
De Proportionibus Motuum.
      - Woodcut printer’s device at foot of final leaf. 16 leaves. Folio, modern boards. [Bologna: Hieronymus Platonicus de Benedictis, 1515]. The earliest surviving edition of this extremely rare work, a "presentation of Achillini’s research in the field of dynamics. A proponent of the Peripatetic School and an Averroist, Achillini criticizes Bradwardine’s attempts to modify the Aristotelian approach to motion "‘In his treatise on the proportion of motion Achillini raised the question whether more recent mathematicians had detected Aristotle in error on that subject. Jordanus, on the contrary, did not care whether the mean was greater or less than the extreme.’–Thorndike: V, 41 "Stillwell: 718 lists his De distributionibus ac De Proportione motuum, 1494, noting that though it is cited by the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke on the basis of Hain, Maittaire, and Panzer, no copy of that edition is known to exist. Apparently ignorant of the present edition, Stillwell cites its appearance in the Opera omnia, Venice, 1545, as the earliest available."–Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 5. Achillini (1463-1512), graduated from Bologna in 1484 with his doctorate in both medicine and philosophy. "He is remembered for his considerable activity in research on human anatomy. He gave a good description of the veins of the arm, and he described the seven bones of tarsus, the fornix of the brain, the cerebral ventricles, the infundibulum, and the trochlear nerve. He also described, exactly, the ducts of the submaxillary salivary glands Finally, to Achillini is attributed the first description of the two ossicles of the ear, the malleus and incus."–D.S.B., I, p. 46. Achillini was highly regarded as a teacher. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The 'Tractatus de particularibus dietatis' was first printed in 1487. § Among the medical works, the Book on Fevers and the Book on Urine were highly regarded textbooks. Sarton calls the latter 'by far the most elaborate mediaeval treatise on the subject'. The Treatise on diet, the only text in print before this edition of Isaac's works, was the first separately printed work on the subject ( Garrison--Morton 1961). Of Isaac's philosophical works, the Book of Definitions and Descriptions, largely based on al-Kindi, was widely used by the Schoolmen in Gerard of Cremona's Latin version (Stern). The 'hearing' of a text by Isaac was a requirement of Cambridge students according to the statutes of 1396 (Stillwell). Isaac Israeli (or Judaeus), 'one of the greatest physicians of Western Islam' (Stillwell) was 'one of the first to direct the Jews to Greek science and philosophy ... he composed many medical writings in Arabic. Translated into Latin in 1087 by Constantine of Africa, into Hebrew, and into Sapanish, their influence was very great ... Isaac was the earliest Jewish philosopher (or one of the earliest) to publish a classification of the sciences. This was essentially the Aristotelian one as transmitted and modified by the Muslims.' (Sarton.) The Pantegni and Viaticum here ascribed to Isaac are free Latin versions by Constantinus Africanus of the Kitab al-Maliki of Ali ibn al-Abbas and the Zad al-musafir of Ahmad ibn Ibrahim, called Ibn al-Jazzar, respectively. The Liber de oculis is also a translation by Constantinus, of the Kitab al-ashr makalat fi'l-ain, of Hunain Ibn Ishak, al-Ibadi. (Durling.) Literature: Sarton I, pp. 639--40; Stillwell 427; S. M. EYN AUSSZUG ETLICHER PRACTICA PROPHECEYEN AUFF VERGANGNE UND ZUKUNFFTIGE JAR / SYBILLE / BRIGITTE / CIRILLI / JOACHIM DES ABTTES / METHODII / UNND BRUDER REYNHARTS / WIRD WEREN BIS AUFF DAS MDLXXXI JAR. NO PLACE NO PRINTER NO DATE (1515)
Small 4to. 10 leaves. Recent half-vellum on polychrome boards. Large woodcut vignette (two-thirds of page) on title, depicting an eight-pointed star surmounted by six signs of Zodiac surmounted by three pagan gods, the lower beacons of the star with the images of Sol and Luna in different positions). Homogeneously negligibly toned due to the quality of paper, some old scribbling, but a fine copy. The author of this prophecy could not be determined, neither can the year of edition. VD-16, A-4432 (not on authopsy) mentions a date of 1515, corresponding with the earliest date readable in the book, whereas the same title is reported by NUC as having a completely different title woodcut and an imprint of Nuremberg, Hans Herrgott, 1525. This is therefore an earlier edition, most probably the original one. A date prior to 1517 can be maintained as no hint to the incipient Reformation is present. Collections of prophecies were a widespread sort of popular books, based on the alleged observations of astronomers of previous ages (in this case Ptolemaeus) to which the predictions of several wise persons and soothsayers (among others Brigitta of Sweden and Gioacchino da Fiore) were accorded. As usual with these books the predictions always saw the immediate and certain defeat of Turks, the conversion of Jews to the true faith and the reconquest of Jerusalem. Slightly disquieting are the predictions of universal German domination (zum letzten wirdt der Frantzoss unter liegen und der Teutsch am angesicht wird regiren an allen enden und behalten das regiment von Orient bis in Occident) and of the formation of a league of peasants against nobility predicted for 1522, which foreshadowed the Bauernkrieg of 1525. Kuczynski 56 (collating only 8 leaves); Koehler 198 (giving an address of Leipzig, but collating only 8 leaves as Kuczynski: the date of 1540 maintained by this last cannot be maintained in view of the date of the Peasants' War); not in STC, Adams, Machiels, Zinner and Houzeau-Lancaster.

- The Aldine Press, Catalogue of the Ahmanson-Murphy Collection of Books, nº 132."
