A-D8,E4; A-D8,E4.: 72;70,[1],[1]pp., Lubeck:. Disbound, old stamp on t.p., very good copies.. Peter Bockmann,. PrinterÕs device on second t.p., head- and tail-pieces, decorated initials. Marco Antonio Maioragio (1514-1555), Italian humanist, philosopher, and jurist, born in Majoragio, a small town not far from Milan. After completing his education with difficulty because of the Italian wars that ruined his family's finances, he went to Milan to continue his interest in the classics, mathematics and rhetoric. He was a student of philosophy under Vincent Madius. In 1541 he was named to chair of eloquence at the college at Milan and later taught also in Ferrara (1543-55). He taught rhetoric and eloquence and published a series of classical treatises and translations and is most remembered for his work on Aristotle. This treatise was not printed with his other works, probably because it criticizes church authorities, and remained unpublished until Marquard Gudius found a copy in Milan and caused it to be printed in Utrecht in 1666. Morfof reprints the work with a new preface and with his own oration on gold. It is a rare work and Thorndike was unable to locate a copy (See V,547.) [For other references to Majoragio see Lohr, Latin Aristotle Commentaries, II,239ff.]Morhof was born at Wismar, 6 Feb., 1639. From 1660 to 1666 was professor of poetry at Rostock, in 1666 he removed to Kiel as professor of history. In 1680 he was made librarian, an office for which he was admirably fitted, and which he turned to the best account of his writings...He was a man of very great learning, and of sound critical judgement.Ó [Ferguson] VD17 14:645231T [Including: VD17 3:306642P.] Bruniibg 2664. Fine woodcut t.p. border Lullian version of John of RupescissaÕs ÒDe Consideratione Quintae Essentiae.Ó (First printed in Venice 1514.)Lull (ca. 1232-1315) Spanish philosopher, alchemist, Catholic martyr. His works on occult philosophy, memory, and alchemy were basic to Renaissance magic. "As the inventor of a method which was to have an immense influence throughout Europe for centuries, Lull is an extremely important figure. Lullism is a precursor of scientific method. Lullian astral medicine developed into Pseudo-Lullian alchemy. The great figures of Renaissance Neoplatonism include Lulliiam in their interests, and naturally so since Lullism was the precursor of their ways of thinking. And from the point of history of religion and of religious toleration, surely we admire Lull's vision in taking advantage of the unique concentration of Christian, Moslem, and Jewish traditions..."{Francis Yates,Occult Philosophy in the Elizabethan Age,1979.]John of Rupescissa is the actual author of the alchemical 'Liber de secretis naturae seu de quinta essentia' traditionally ascribed to Lull. It was written in the mid-fourteenth century. Michela Pereira "Alchemical Corpus Attributed To Raymond Lull,1989" notes"...all point in the same direction: the false attribution of every alchemical treatise concerning the fifth essence of wine and its attribution to Raymond Lull. Clearly, in alchemical and Hermetic tradition Lull's name carried more weight than Rupescissa's. VD 16 R157. Rogent/Duran 71. Mellon 8. Bruning 115. BM STC (Germ.) 533. Rosenthal, Magica. 541. Florentiae (Florence): Philippi de Giunta, August 1514. First Giunta Edition and probably the earliest of the 8vo editions of Caesar. The plates in this edition were used by Aldus for his edition dated 1513. Beautifully illustrated with 2 double-page woodcut maps of France and Spain, and of Europe north of the Mediterranean and east into Germania and 5 fine full-page woodcut plates. Engraved Giunta device on the verso of the last leaf. 8vo, in a finely designed full morocco binding by Graba, the covers with a central ornamental device surrounded by a large diamond at the center in blind and surrounded by multi blind tooled panels, all enclosed by a single fillet blind tooled line, the spine with wide raised bands, the diamond designs repeated in the compartments, title in one compartment gilt. (16ff), 285 leaves, (1 ff with device on verso). A wonderfully preserved copy, the binding in excellent condition, the textblock and illustrations also in excellent, fresh, clean and crisp condition.. RARE. ONLY THREE COPIES RECORDED IN OCLC. A FINE COPY OF THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT GIUNTA EDITION. Despite the fact that Julius Caesar remains one of the most illustrious men in history, only a handful of his extensive writings survive to the present day. This ÒOperaÓ contains his primary works, ÒCommentaries on the Gallic WarÓ and the three books of the Civil Wars in Rome with Pompey, as well as his further works. Dibden calls the Giunta edition more correct than that of Aldus. Julius Caesar was anxious to establish his own record of his successful campaigns in Gaul from 58 to 52 B.C., which includes the less successful invasion of Britain. To answer those who accused him of purely personal ambition, he wished to appear as a straightforward soldier, fighting wars that were essential to Rome. Fascinating for its insights into a man who shaped the history of the western world, his first-hand account of the Gallic Wars is a crucial source for the history of Britain and Germany as well as Gaul. Books I[VII were probably written year by year, when events were fresh in CaesarÕs mind and issued together in 51 B.C. Book VII ends with the defeat of Cercingetorix so that Aulus Hirtius (d. 43 B.C.) CaesarÕs lieutenant in Gaul, took up the narrative in Book VII with th ensuing uprisings and the beginnings of CaesarÕs disputes with the authorities in Rome. The ÒCommentariesÓ was written not to suggest a history, but rather as a bald record of events. Caesar wished to create an impression that he was just a simple soldier fighting for the good of Rome. It is unique as a contemporary account of a drawn out (nine years) foreign war written by a Roman general, and he has written it in lucid and unrhetorical Latin. The work was probably first published in 51 BC. The books on the Civil War are rather more obviously political, the theme being that his enemies forced the war upon him. The narrative is greatly relieved however by touches of humility and humor. Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44 BC.

Becerra Guibert, Ignacio
El Cierre Fiscal y Contable. Ejercicio 2008
|
"This volume is of great interest to students of the early story of America, as it deals with the treatment of the disease whose first propagation in Europe has been attributed to the sailors of Christopher Columbus" (cf. Maggs Bros, Manuscripts and Books on Medicine, Alchemy, Astrology, Londres, 1929, n° 70). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SCHÖPPER, J.
Two Latin school plays for the gymnasium at Dortmund, Euphemus, seu felicitatus Jacob: actio nova & sacra, descripta historice. Item. Ovis perdita: parabola evangelica, comice descripta.
|
Johannes de Laet, 17254, Antwerp, - 2 plays in one vol. 12mo. 19th century half morocco, spine gilt. With woodcut printer's device on two titles. 55, (1 blank); 55 (=56) pp. Two extremely rare Latin school plays by Jacob Schöpper the Elder, German humanist, poet and preacher (ca.1514-1554). Schöpper studied at Louvain, and worked since 1544 at Dortmund. He came from a Dortmund patrician family and was from his youth a close friend of Johann Lambach, who founded the Gymnasium at Dortmund in 1543. Schöpper wrote the present plays for performance at the Dortmund school and he also directed them personally. When the plays had much success, they were published and became also popular with the larger public. The first edition was published by Philippus Maurer in Schöpper's home town Dortmund in 1552, but of this edition only an incomplete copy is preserved in the Landesbibliothek Dortmund. The present Antwerp edition was probably the second edition. Both plays were published together, but they both have their own title-page, dedication, collation and pagination. The second play "Ovis Perdita" was based on a parable of the same title, written by Jacobus Zovitius from Breda. Schöpper's collected school plays, six in all, were published in 1562, at Cologne. Fine copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; marginal waterst.) Belg. Typogr. 4291; Goedeke II, p. 137, no. 23 e-f; not in Bibl. Belg., Machiels, STC Dutch; nor STC German. London: George Sawbridge, William Rawlins, and Samuel Roycroft, 1679 . LAW Folio. . Contemporary calf. Expertly rebacked worn at edges still a sound copy . The original edition was written by Anthony Fitzherbert and entitled La Grande Abridgement London 1514 and printed by Pynson. It is the first serious attempt to reduce the laws enacted during the reign of Edward III into systematic shape. It is a digest of the year books arranged under appropriate titles in alphabetical order and it is considered the principal source for all future attempts at codification of the law. Brook or Broke who edited and expanded Fitzherbert"s work received high praise from Coke for his effort. "Broke"s treatise however is considered superior in lucidity of arrangement to that of Fitzherbert and contains also some valuable original matter." The next great step was taken in 1151 with Gratian's Concordia Discordantium Canonum, or Decretum Gratiani, a watershed compilation that superseded earlier collections. Hernandez de Toledo, Francisco (1514-1587)

pspan style="font-family: Arial;"363 pages with illustrations and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7 1/4") rebound in full leather with red and black spine labels and gilt lettering, original wrappers bound in. Translated by Joaquin Garcia Pimentel. From the library of George M Foster. 1st Mexican edition limited to 100 copies.br /br /Francisco HernA!ndez de Toledo (La Puebla de MontalbA!n, Toledo 1514 a!! Madrid 28 January 1587) was a naturalist and court physician to the King of Spain. HernA!ndez was among the first wave of Spanish Renaissance physicians practicing according to the revived principles formulated by Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna. HernA!ndez studied medicine and botany at the University of AlcalA! and may have traveled between cities in Spain as was common among physicians seeking to make a name for themselves. Moving from Seville with his wife and children, HernA!ndez served briefly in the Hospital y Monasterio de Guadalupe and then at the Hospital Mendoza in Toledo, where he gained prominence for his studies of medicinal botany and publication of a Castilian translation of a work on natural history by Pliny the Elder. In 1567 HernA!ndez became a personal physician to King Philip II. In 1571 HernA!ndez was ordered to embark on the first scientific mission in the New World, a study of the region's medicinal plants. Accompanied by his son Juan, he traveled for 7 years collecting and classifying specimens, interviewing the indigenous people through translators and conducting medical studies in Mexico and the Philippines. He was assisted by three indigenous painters (baptized, AntA3n, Baltazar ElA!as and Pedro VA!zquez respectively), who prepared illustrations. During the 1576 yellow fever ("cocoliztle") epidemic HernA!ndez performed autopsies in the Hospital Real de San JosA! de los Naturales in collaboration with surgeon Alonso LA3pez de Hinojosos and physician Juan de la Fuente. Parts of Francisco HernA!ndez' extensive descriptions of his findings were published in a translated collection entitled emPlantas y Animales de la Nueva Espana, y sus virtudes por Francisco Hernandez/em, y de Latin en Romance por Fr. Francisco Ximenez (Mexico, 1615) also cited as emCuatro libros de la naturaleza y virtudes de las plantas y animales que estA!n recibidos en uso de medicina en la Nueva EspaA!a/em published by Francisco JimA!nez. A heavily redacted compendium in the original Latin was later published as emRerum medicarum Novae Hispaniae thesaurus/em (Rome, 1628) by collector, Federico Cesi. Another impression was put out by Johannes Schreck and Fabio Colonna as emNova plantarum, animalium et mineralium mexicanorum historia a Francisco HernA!ndez in indis primum compilata, de inde a Nardo Antonio Reccho in volumen digesta/em (Rome: Vital Mascardi, 1648). Some of HernA!ndez' original manuscripts are housed in the library of the Escorial, but many were lost in the fire of July 17, 1671. A new compilation by physician Casimiro GA3mez Ortega, based on additional material found in the Colegio Imperial de los Jesuitas de Madrid was entitled emFrancisci Hernandi, medici atque historici Philippi II, hispan et indiar. "The first complete system of surgery after that of Guy de Chauliac. It contains an account of gunshot wounds and a section on syphilis. It was a book which especially suited a practitioner who knew nothing of anatomy and feared or dislike to make use of the knife" (Garrison-Morton).

The True History of the Conquest of Mexico, By Captain Bernal Diaz del Castillo, one of the Conquerors. Written in the year 1568
|
pspan style="font-family: Arial;"viii+514 pages with frontispiece map. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 3/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Translated by Maurice Keatinge. From the library of George M Foster. 1st English edition.br /br /was a conquistador, who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes, himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo (Spain), he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune, but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor, and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. Diaz joined this group, under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture, and although they discovered the Yucatan coast, by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless, Diaz returned to the coast of Yucatan the following year, on an expedition led by Juan de Grijalva, with the intent of exploring the newly discovered lands. Upon returning to Cuba, he enlisted in a new expedition, this one led by Hernan Cortes. In this third effort, Diaz took part in one of the legendary military campaigns of history, bringing an end to the Aztec empire in Mesoamerica. During this campaign, Diaz spoke frequently with his companions in arms about their experiences, collecting them into a coherent narration. The book that resulted from this was emHistoria verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva Espana/em (English: emThe True History of the Conquest of New Spain/em. In it he describes many of the 119 battles in which he claims to have participated, culminating in the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521.br /br /As a reward for his service, Diaz was appointed governor of Santiago de los Caballeros, present-day Antigua Guatemala. He began writing his history in 1568, almost fifty years after the events described, in response to an alternative history written by Cortes's chaplain, who had not actually participated in the campaign. He called his book the Verdadera Historia ("True History"), in response to the claims made in the earlier work. Diaz died in 1585, without seeing his book published. A manuscript was found in a Madrid library in 1632 and finally published, providing an eye-witness account of the events, often told from the perspective of a common soldier. Today it is one of the most important sources in understanding the campaign that led to the collapse of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish conquest of Mexico.br /br /George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. SIGISMUND I., König von Polen (1467-1548) - DIE SCHLACHT
S. 159; First edition. Exceedingly scarce contemporary German account on the battle of Orsha, finely illustrated with a large title woodcut. The Battle of Orsha took place September 8, 1514, between the forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Kingdom of Poland, under the command of Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski, and the army of Grand Duchy of Moscow under Konyushy, Ivan Chelyadnin and Kniaz (Prince) Mikhail Golitsa. The Battle of Orsha - one of the biggest battles of 16th-century Europe - was part of a long chain of the Russo-Lithuanian Wars conducted by Russian rulers striving to gather all the Old Ruthenian lands under their rule. Due to the spectacular proportions of the defeat, information about the Battle of Orsha was suppressed in Muscovite chronicles. King Sigismund I of Poland on the other hand sought to gain as much political advantage as possible from his victory. Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor was impressed by the scope of the Polish-Lithuanian victory and started peace negotiations with Jagiellons in Vienna in 1515. The finely executed large woodcut was reissued later by the Nuremberg printer Jobst Gutknecht who started business in 1514. Until his death in 1542 over 350 titles left his press. - Minor brown stain in outer margin. - Flexible old vellum. [Attributes: First Edition]

- Paris, H. Estienne, (7 Sept. 1514). 4to (27.3 x 19.2 cm), printed in Gothic type. Title set within woodcut border, full-page woodcut on one page and small woodcut illustrations and diagrams throughout. Many decorative initials. Expertly executed new calf binding in period style. *Historians of mediaeval mathematics agree that Jordanus de Nemore (1225-1260) was one of the most important writers on mathematics in Europe. He was, for example, among the first to use letters to replace numbers in algebraic calculations. But almost nothing is known about his life. This edition of Jordanus' Arithmetica - the first Estienne edition - is a fine example of early sixteenth century printing, complete with numerous mathematical diagrams. It comprises Jordanus' work on the theory of numbers, as well as a treatise on music by le Fèvre, an epitome (also by le Fèvre) of Boethius' Arithmetica, and an anonymous tract (attributed to John Shirwood) about the arithmetical game of "Rithmimachia". This Estienne edition was printed from settings similar to those used in the first printed edition of 1496. A rare book - ABPC records only 2 copies in the last 30 years. A small hand stamp on verso of title page, Some very small and marginal wormholes at the beginning and end, but not obtrusive in any way. Two small paper repairs to corners of first two leaves. Some near-contemporary marginalia and the text "Jordani Arithmetica" added in ink to title, Estienne's name inked out on title-page and colophon. Provenance: Harvard College Library. LUCIANUS/NACHTIGALL, Ottmar (a.k.a. LUSCINIUS), tr. & ed
Deorvm dialogi numero.
|
Rare first edition of the Strasbourg humanist Ottmar Nachtigall's edition and parallel Latin translation of Lucian's satirical Dialogues of the Gods. The ancient's cynicism and common sense found a wide audience among Northern European humanists in the intellectual orbit of Erasmus. A member of the circle of Strasbourg humanists which included Jakob Sturm, Nikolaus Gerbel, Thomas Vogler, his teacher Jakob Wimpfeling and Sebastian Brant, Nachtigall is credited with introducing the formal teaching of Greek to the city of Strasbourg. In this capacity he prepared a number of Greek grammars and Greek texts, including an edition of the Palatine Anthology. He met Erasmus during the humanist's visit to Strasbourg in 1514; Erasmus is duly saluted in the present work's preface (a1v), though relations between the two men later underwent some strain when they lived in the same house in Basel (see Contemporaries of Erasmus III.3). Nachtigall is also known for a popular defense of humanistic studies, Grunnius sophista and original works of music theory, and his career warrants study as a Northern humanist sympathetic to church reform who nonetheless remained a Catholic. OCLC lists U.Texas/Austin, Cambridge, Emory Pitts, Harvard.PROVENANCE: Josef Adolf Schwerdfeger (1867-1931), Austrian historian. * VD16 L2955; Proctor 10277; Adams L-1617; Hoffmann III.538; Panzer VI.73, n. 385.

[Nurenberg: Hieronimus Holtzel, 1514]. [Nurenberg: Hieronimus Holtzel, 1514].. 6 leaves. Title with large woodcut vignette. Small quarto. Old flexible vellum. Overall a very good copy. First German edition. A remarkable account of the battle of Chaldiran between the Turkish Sultan Selim I. (1465-1520) and the Persian Shah Ismail I. (1487-1524), which was won by the Turks. Selim usurped the throne from his father, Bayezid II, in 1512 and eliminated all potential pretenders to the throne. In a number of military campaigns he defeated the Mamluk Sultanate and annexed Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. He extended Ottoman power to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, claiming the position of "Guardian of the Faithful," a title that had hitherto been held by Shah Ismail. During his rule, Selim more than doubled the size of the Ottoman empire. According to Gollner, the present German translation appears to be based on an Italian original. News of the Persian defeat reached Germany in a remarkably short time. Two other editions (one in Latin, one in German) were issued in Augsburg in the same year. Only two copies are located on OCLC. Gollner: TURCICA I:67. VD16, V-2594. Panzer: ANNALEN DER ALTEREN DEUTSCHEN LITERATUR 796.

Johanne Froben
1514 Johanne Froben Latin Bible: "Biblia, Cum Peno Apparatu Summariorum Concordantiarum et Quadruplici.
|
Johanne Froben, Basel, Switzerland 1514 - Title: Bible, Latin: "Biblia, cum pleno apparatu summariorum concordantiarum et quadruplici repertori." Publisher: Johanne Froben, Basel. Froben was a historic Renaissance printer who also printed numerous works of Erasmus, including Erasmus' 1519 Novum Testamentum, which became the basis for Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German for the common people of his culture. Year: 1514 Edition: Masterpiece work of typography; post-incunabula. Size: 9 x 13.5" (Folio) Collation: 14 leaves + 351 leaves + 28 leaves forming 986 pages. Complete. Binding: Original pigskin binding, large repair to front cover, clasps missing, but all intact. Inscriptions: A few instances of antique handwriting occur; no apparent family history Description/Contents: Pages printed on heavy paper with dark ink, accented with woodcut engravings (see below). Title with verso beginning small section of introductory notes. Three sections of tables follow. "Tabula alphabetica historiarum" follows the Tables. Followed by General Divisions of the Bible. Scriptural text follows, with prologues to each book. Apocryphal books are included but not grouped together (interspersed with Old Testament Books). Leaves (e.g., not pages) are numbed (Fo. 1, etc.) throughout the text of Scripture, but not the pre- or post- Scriptural text materials. Last numbered leaf is 351, which is then followed by a brief index and what appears to be Interpretation of Hebrew Names, numerous leaves, but apparently complete. Other features of this Bible include some printed marginal references and a several page chart between the Old and New Testaments, each titled "Canon" with successive numbers 1-10. Engravings: Decorative and illustrative woodcut border on title leaf. Initial decorative woodcut letters appear to open each book. Additional woodcut, depicting someone reading the Hebrew Bible in the temple, adds visual interest to this Bible. This woodcut also has decorative accents borders to each side. Condition: Binding of text block generally secure; one weakened spot noted behind the third table, but no leaves are detached. A number of leaves have small wormholes, but these are generally found in the margins where present. Some do cover text, and result in the loss of a few letters, but not severe. Occasional colored pencil notes, modern, but not extensive. Occasional small spots found at a brief perusal (foxing, smudging, soiling, staining) but most pages are generally clean and white. Last few leaves have brown staining, covering but not obscuring all text. Additional Reference: British Library: General Reference Collection; 3020.f.6. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Piccoli capilettera silografici. Marocchino nero giansenista: titolo al dorso, dentelles interne e taglî in oro. Bell’esemplare.

Piccoli capilettera silografici. Marocchino nero giansenista: titolo al dorso, dentelles interne e taglî in oro. Bell’esemplare. Palau, 293382; Essling, 1885; Sander, 6728.

PLUTARCH.
The most influential Latin edition printed outside Italy Vitae Plutarchi Cheronei post Pyladen Brixianum longe diligentius repositae: cum moiore verioreque indice: necnon cum Aemilii Probi vitis.
|
Paris, Jodocus (Josse) Badius Ascensius & Joannes Parvus (Jean Petit), 1514, November 13, preface dated 1 December 1514.. Jodocus (Josse) Badius Ascensius & Joannes Parvus (Jean Petit), Folio. Half blind stamped 16th-century pigskin over the original wooden boards, with two clasps, spine in compartments with title written in ink: 'Plutarchus 35', title also in 16th-century hand on the wood of the front board. Title in splendid Renaissance woodcut border, with coat of arms left blank in the lower borderpiece (Renouard, Encadrement no. 1); in the middle the printer's device of Jodocus Badius Ascensus with the heading 'prelum Ascensianum' printed in red (Renouard, marque 3, ill. vol. 1, p. 43), lettering of the title, as well as certain elements in the border printed in red. Many beautiful woodcut initials in the text. (22), 393, (1 blank) lvs.. Very rare first Latin edition of Plutarch's Vitae paralellae (Lives) by the famous Parisian printer and publisher Josse Badius Ascensius. After the Strassbourg edition of 1470-71 this is the first and by far the most influential Latin edition outside Italy, printed three years before the Greek edition princeps. Much better, as is stated on the title, than the edition by Pylades Brixianus (=Johannes Franciscus Buccardus, 1506), printed in Brescia in 1499.Plutarch's popularity and importance rest primarily on these ' Parallel Lives' - composed ca. 100-120 AD -, which were designed to encourage mutual respect between Greeks and Romans. The lives are presented in pairs, for example: Theseus-Romulus, Demosthenes-Cicero, Alexander the Great-Caesar, etc. There are 22 pairs, and four single biographies of Aratus, Artaxerxes, and the Roman emperors Otho and Galba. By exhibiting noble deeds and characters, they were also to provide patterns of good behavior and moral and ethical values. Plutarch's later influence has been profound, but his reputation faded in the Latin West during the Middle Ages, only to be re-introduced in Renaissance Italy by Byzantine scholars in the 15th century. Italian humanists had already translated Plutarch's work into Latin before 1509 when the Greek editio princeps of the Moralia, the other great work by Plutarch, was published by Aldus Manutius at Venice. The Greek editio princeps of the Vitae appeared at Florence in 1517 and they were printed in 1519 by Aldus. Especially through its translations into Latin - of which this 1514 edition by Badius is undoubtedly the most important - as well as in the vernacular - the famous French translation by Jacques Amyot in 1559, and the English by Sir Thomas North in 1579 - the Lives could gain an enormous impact on Western civilisation by providing later biographers and literary authors an outstanding model. It is very well known for example that authors like Montagne, Corneille, Racine, Rousseau and Schiller heavily drew upon the Lives . This was certainly also the case with Shakespeare for whom the Lives were the main source for his Roman history plays. Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, Anthony and Cleopatra and Timon of Athens, all come, often literally, from the Lives. They have functioned also to a great extent as a model for later rulers like the French king Henry IV, Frederik II of Prussia and even Napoleon. The book is printed in a fine Roman type. Very good copy, with ownerships's entry of Albertus Trechsel (?) in ink on verso front cover, and the bookplate of Ludovicus Romanus IVD on verso of first flyleaf.- (Some contemporary 16th century scholarly annotations, esp. on lvs. 120-126v: the 'Live of Cato'). Renouard, Josse Badius Ascensius , III, p. 175-8 (4 copies, one of which in the Bibl. Arsenal); NUC lists 3 copies, one of which in the Folger Shakespeare Library); not in STC French , and Adams; no copy in the British Library; no copy in BNF.

Thesaurus 190. Warmholtz 2631 not. Carlander II s. 34 resp. 42 & III s. 564ff. Walde, NTBB 1926, s. 171ff. A-editionen.

SAXO GRAMMATICUS.
Danorum Regum heroumque Historie. (Issued by Christiern Pedersen).
|
- Paris, Iodocus (Josse) Badius Ascensius, 1514 (on colophon). Small folio. Bound in a very nice Danish Cambridge style-binding (Danish "mirror-binding") from ab. 1720-30 w. five raised bands on richly gilt back. Some scratches and overall wear, but well-preserved. Title-page printed in red w. large woodcut ornamental border and large woodcut depicting a Danish king in front of his army (signed C.P.). Numerous beautiful large and small woodcut initials throughout. Title-page repaired at margin w. very minor loss, none to woodcuts or text on verso; occasional later colouring in red to parts of the woodcuts of the title-page border. Minor browning an waterstaining (mostly marginal) throughout. One leaf (xiii) w. a tear, no loss. Cont. ownership-inscriptions to title-page and colophon. All in all a very nice and handsome copy. 107 ff. + final blank (being a1-(8) - z1-(8) + A1-(8) - B(1-(7) + 1 blank; quire aa bound first, aa1 being the title-page). The seminal first edition of Saxo's "History of Denmark", the edition that preserved the first full history of Denmark for posterity and to this day the most important of all Danish historical publications. The work furthermore contains the first known written narrative of the legend of Hamlet. No complete manuscript of the work has survived, merely a few loose leaves have been preserved, and thus "Pedersen's edition is indeed our only source to Saxo's history" (Thesaurus, 190). "[I]t is this edition that saved Saxo's work, because as mentioned earlier, during the course of time, all manuscripts have disappeared". ([own translation] Carl S. Petersen). The present copy is the A issue without the words "Venundantur in ædibus Ascensius" underneath the woodcut of the Danish King on the title-page; according to Thesaurus, "[p]resumably the B issue was for sale in Paris and the A issue for export". Saxo Grammaticus (ab. 1150-1220) was probably a secular clerk or secretary to Absalon, Archbishop of Lund, the great Danish churchman, statesman and warrior. Saxo is remembered today as the author of the first full history of Denmark, in which he modelled himself on the classical authors (e.g. Virgil, Plato, Cicero) in order to glorify his fatherland. The work dates from the end of the 12th century and was edited by Christiern Pedersen, a Canon of Lund, and printed by Jodocus Badius Ascendius in Paris in 1514 (the present copy) with 16th century re-issues following in 1534 (Basel) and 1576 (Frankfurt). Only with the first printing of this seminal work did the work become known throughout academic circles. The work soon received international fame and is to this day renowned as not only being immensely important historically, but also being extremely well written (Saxo is praised by Erasmus, for instance, for possessing great power of eloquence). The work consists of sixteen books that cover the time from the founders of the Danish people (Dan I of Denmark) till Saxo's own time, ending around 1185 (with the submission of Pomerania), when the last part is supposedly written. The work thus covers the entire history of Denmark until Saxo's own time, seen under a somewhat glorified perspective, from heathen times with tales of Odin and the gods of Valhalla to the times of Absalon, who probably directly influenced the sections on the history of his own time, working closely with Saxo himself. Apart from that, the work contains the first known written narration of the legend of Hamlet (Amleth, the son who took revenge for his murdered father). It is most likely this narrative of Saxo's, which he based on an oral tale, that forms the basis for Shakespeare's "Hamlet", which takes place in Helsinore in Denmark. There is fairly certain evidence that Shakespeare knew Saxo's work on the History of Denmark and thus the legend of Amleth.Laur.Nielsen 240. - Thesaurus 190. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
