A3776, Venetiis (Venezia), - Apud Hieronimum Scotum (Girolamo Scoto), Pergamena molle originale, titoli manoscritti al dorso e al taglio, 4°(cm.21,5x15,5), pp. (96)-1254-(2) con 2 belle e grandi marche tipografiche dello Scoto al frontespizio (Grifone rampante solleva una sfera alata entro cornice figurata) e al colophon (Fama alata suona il corno, regge uno scudo con le iniziali OSM e poggia con un piede su un prigioniero, entro cornice col motto: Famam extendere factis est virtutis opus), lieve alone d’umido alle prime carte e sottili tracce di tarlo a 3/4 carte. Rara e importante raccolta di Decisiones della Santa Sede prese tra la metà del Trecento alla metà del Cinquecento facenti capo a quattro tra i principali fautori della Sacra Rota del tempo. A Gilles de Bellemere, celebre canonista e vescovo di Avignone, si rifanno le 755 Conclusiones (1374-78) referenti un vasto panorama giuridico; mentre sono di Guillen Cassador, canonista e vescovo di Alghero, uditore alla S.Rota dal 1511 al 1523 e legato di Giulio II, le celebri Decisiones apprezzate per prudenza e dottrina. A Etienne Aufreri, giureconsulto di Tolosa, si deve invece la raccolta di Quaestiones della sede arcivescovile di Tolosa scritte dopo il 1483. La quarta e ultima parte dell’opera è di Pietro Benintendi di Cesena, giudice rotale di Bologna attivo alla metà del Cinquecento, che scrisse le 98 Conclusiones (1540-1545) espletando proprio la sua carica presso la Sacra Rota bolognese. Sforza, über "ars illa imprimendi". "Noch ist eine Anrede der Drucker an die Studierenden angehängt, in welcher sie ihren Florus empfehlen. Er ist auch in der That mit der schönsten grossen Schrift gedruckt. Daß nur die vielen Abbreviaturen nicht wären!" (Denis). Der zweite Teil enthält die Annotationes, von denen Camers sagt, er habe sie "in der Zeit eines Monats aufgesetzet. Sie bestehen meistentheils aus Citaten andrer alten Schriftsteller, die von eben dem Gegenstande handeln, und machen der Belesenheiten unsers Minoriten Ehre" (ebd.). Zur Erklärung der kuriosen Gleichzeitigkeit der beiden Wiener Florus-Editionen mutmaßt Denis, dies müsse auf eine Eifersucht zwischen den beiden Herausgebern zurückgehen. - Etwas gebräunt und fingerfleckig. (In fine:) Stampato in Venetia per Zorzi de Rusconi Milanese. A istantia de Nicolo Zopino, MCCCCCXIadi XIII Febraro, (Venezia,1511), in-4, ff. (4), XXXIX, (1 bianco), legatura settecentesca in pergamena. Prima edizione illustrata della Vita di S.Caterina da Siena. Titolo figurato con elaborate bordure silografiche con S. Caterina che riceve le stimmate, Adamo ed Eva, S. Giovanni e cornici con elementi vegetali e putti: si tratta di una riduzione e di un'inversione dei legni dell'edizione del 1505; al f. IIII verso Crocifissione a piena pagina inquadrata da legni, tratta dall'edizione del San Bonaventura del 1497; al f. V recto l’adorazione della Vergine con il Bambino, grande impresa dello stampatore al verso del f. 39. Per la prima volta il testo viene illustrato da una serie di 17 silografie con i passi salienti della vita della Santa. Seconda edizione (prima 1505) di questo poema ascetico in tre libri composto da Giovanni Pollio, detto anche Pollastrino Aretino, letterato, traduttore e canonico originario di Arezzo, vissuto nel sec. XVI. Il testo inizia con uno straordinario dialogo il cui acrostico forma la scritta “Sancta Catarina da Fontebranda ora per el Populo tuo Senese ad Dio nostro Signiore”; mentre è importante notare il fatto che il primo foglio di ogni segnatura riporta, insieme alla lettera del quaderno, il titolo “S.CATH.”. E’ questa una caratteristica che non abbiamo riscontrato in alcuna altra edizione cinquecentesca, attuata per aiutare il compito del rilegatore affinché non mischiasse quaderni di opere diverse. Importante documento della diffusione del culto della Santa e della nascita di una iconografia della sua vita. Rarissima edizione, di cui un solo esemplare è conservato in biblioteche italiane; buon esemplare, malgrado qualcuno dei primi 6 fogli, dopo il bellissimo frontespizio originale, sia stato ristampato nel XVIII secolo: evidentemente la notevole rarità di questo figurato fece sì che già all’epoca alcuni esemplari venissero completati con fogli di testo impressi con caratteri antichi e la Crocifissione reimpressa. Basel, Adam Petri, 1511.. 47-zeiliges O-Postinkunabelblatt mit einem Holzschnitt (13,8 x 7,4 cm), einer Holzschnittleiste und einer vierzeiligen Initiale. Blatt fest mit hellem Fleck im Rand. Blattmaße: 27,7 x 17,1 cm. Sauberer klarer Holzschnittabdruck des Heiligen Johannes von Antiochien.. Johannes von Antiochien (349/44 - 407) war Erzbischof von Konstantinopel und gilt als einer der größten christlichen Prediger. Im 6. Jahrhundert wurde ihm der Name Chrysostomos beigelegt (griech.: Goldmund), unter dem er heute bekannt ist. In den orthodoxen Kirchen wird er seit dem 10. Jahrhundert als einer der drei heiligen Hierarchen verehrt, zusammen mit Basilius dem Großen und Gregor von Nazianz. Für das westliche Christentum ist er einer der vier Kirchenlehrer des Ostens. Er wurde als Asket verehrt und war für seine Begabung in der öffentlichen Rede wie auch wegen seines Auftretens gegen den Missbrauch der kirchlichen und staatlichen Autorität bekannt. Chrysostomos wurde mitten im arianischen Streit geboren und wurde zur Zeit des ersten Konzils von Konstantinopel zum Diakon geweiht. Er war als Theologe eine Generation jünger, als die kappadokischen Väter Basilius von Caesarea, Gregor von Nazianz und Gregor von Nyssa und ein Zeitgenosse Ambrosius' von Mailand und des westlichen Kirchenlehrers Augustinus von Hippo. Eine wesentliche Rolle in seinem Leben spielte auch die theologische Rivalität zwischen den Patriarchen von Alexandria und Antiochia. Johannes wurde in Antiochia als Kind hoch angesehener Eltern geboren. Sein Vater Secundus, ein hoher Offizier im Oberkommando der römischen Ostarmee, starb bald nach seiner Geburt. Er wurde von seiner christlichen Mutter Anthusa erzogen, mit der ihn eine enge Beziehung verband. Weil seine Mutter wohlhabend war, konnte er danach an der "Schule der Rhetoren und Philosophen" weiterstudieren und zwar Rechtswissenschaft unter dem heidnischen Lehrer Libanius. Mit zwanzig Jahren ließ er sich als Katechumene eintragen, studierte unter Diodor, Bischof von Tarsus, einem Leiter der neueren antiochenischen Schule und wurde drei Jahre später von Bischof Meletius von Antiochien getauft, dessen Assistent er in dieser Zeit wurde und der ihn 371 zum Lektor bestimmte. Sein Wunsch, sich als Mönch in die Einsamkeit zurückzuziehen, traf bei seiner Mutter auf starke Opposition! Er versprach ihr, sie nicht zu verlassen, solange sie lebte, und führte mit drei gleichgesinnten Freunden in ihrem Haus ein Klosterleben. Nach ihrem Tod 372 schloss er sich den Mönchen in den syrischen Bergen an und verbrachte vier Jahre mit ihnen und zwei weitere Jahre in völliger Einsamkeit. Dabei zog er sich in eine Höhle zurück, las ständig die Bibel und gönnte sich nur ein Minimum an Schlaf. Schließlich zwang ihn sein schlechter Gesundheitszustand zur Rückkehr nach Antiochia. Johannes wurde 381 Diakon und 386 von Flavian von Antiochia zum Presbyter geweiht. In den nächsten zwölf Jahren gewann er in der gesamten griechisch sprechenden Kirche durch seine rednerische Begabung hohe Popularität. 397 wurde er gegen seinen Wunsch zum Erzbischof von Konstantinopel, der damals reichsten Stadt des römischen Reiches, ernannt. Er trat sein Amt als Patriarch wenige Jahre nach dem Tod von Theodosius I. an, in einer Zeit, als Hofintrigen florierten. Kaiser Arcadius, der in Konstantinopel regierte, wurde durch seinen ehrgeizigen Günstling Eutropius beeinflusst, dem die Kaiserin Eudoxia nicht gewogen war. Die Wahl von Chrysostomos war durch diesen zustande gekommen, entgegen dem Wunsch des Patriarchen Theophilus von Alexandria, der für einen Kandidaten seiner theologischen Richtung lobbyiert hatte. Dessen ungeachtet wurde Chrysostomos am 26. Februar 398 inthronisiert. Die Kirche von Konstantinopel agierte zu der Zeit nicht nach christlichen Idealen. Priester, die vorgaben, zölibatär zu leben - was in der Ostkirche niemals Pflicht war - teilten den Haushalt mit sogenannten "geistlichen Schwestern" oder lebten in ähnlichem Luxus wie die kaiserlichen Potentaten. Die Finanzlage der Kirche war desolat und kaum jemand kümmerte sich um die Gemeinde. Die Gottesdienste wurden zu Zeiten gehalten, die den Reichen angenehm waren, konnten jedoch vom arbeitenden Volk nicht besucht werden. Chrysostomos sah den Zustand der Kirche. Er bedauerte die Tatsache, dass ihm nun ein kaiserliches Protokoll den Zugang zu Privilegien eröffnen würde, die höher als die der höchsten Staatsbeamten waren. Während seiner Zeit als Bischof lehnte er die Veranstaltung verschwenderischer Gastmähler ab und kümmerte sich stattdessen um die Reform des Klerus. Mehrmals wurde Chrysostomos auf Grund von Konflikten mit dem kaiserlichen Haus verbannt, u. a. nach Cucusus im (damaligen Groß-) Armenien, auf 1400 Metern Höhe mitten im Antitaurus gelegen (heute Göksun in der Türkei). Johannes Cassianus (um 360 - 435), Diakon von Johannes Chrysostomos, wurde mit der Bitte um Unterstützung nach Rom zu Papst Innozenz I. geschickt. Cassianus protestierte vergebens gegen die Verbannung. Johannes schrieb Briefe, die in Konstantinopel großen Einfluss ausübten, woraufhin er noch weiter verbannt wurde, nach Pityus (am östlichen Rand des Schwarzen Meeres), damals der östlichste Vorposten des Römischen Imperiums. (Heute heißt der Ort Pitsunda und liegt etwa 75 Kilometer nordwestlich von Suchumi in Georgien). Dieses Ziel erreichte er jedoch nicht, da er auf dem Gewaltmarsch in der Nähe von Comana Pontica (heute Gümenek in der nordöstlichen Türkei) starb. Er wurde in der Kapelle des Märtyrers Basiliscus, im heutigen Bizeri gelegen, beigesetzt. Chrysostomos Gebeine wurden 438 in einer feierlichen Prozession nach Konstantinopel überführt, wo sie 1204 beim vierten Kreuzzug von lateinischen Christen geraubt, nach Rom gebracht und dort 800 Jahre lang im Petersdom aufbewahrt wurden. Erst am 27. November 2004 gab Papst Johannes Paul II. dem orthodoxen Patriarchen Bartholomäus I. die Gebeine zurück. Chrysostomos stand gegenüber Arianern und Novatianern klar auf der Seite des kirchlichen Konsensus, aber er befasste sich wenig mit den Feinheiten der Dogmatik und theologischen Kontroversen. Er betonte die praktische Frömmigkeit anstelle einer unfruchtbaren, rein dogmatischen Rechtgläubigkeit. (vgl. Wikipedia)

Lyon, Nicolaus de Benedictis, 20. Dezember 1511. - Schöner Sammelband mit bedeutenden Papstdekreten. Prächtige, ganz in Rot und Schwarz gedruckte Ausgabe. Die Texte sind von ausführlichen Kommentaren umflossen; eine typographische Meisterleistung. Von Johannes Chapuis herausgegebener und bei dem Lyoner Drucker Nicolaus de Bencdictis zwischen Ende Oktober und dem 20. Dezember 1511 gedruckter Band mit vier Papstdekreten, die zu den bedeutenden kanonistischen Quellen der Patristik gehören. Die Ausgabe folgt als dritter Druck dieser Zusammenstellung den Ausgaben von Kerver in Paris und Cabiller in Lyon, beide von 1511, mit leicht abweichender Kollation. Der äußerst feine Satz in Schwarz und Rot imitiert noch ganz die Tradition der mittelalterlichen Handschriften: Der mittig gesetzte zweispaltige Text wird von dem Kommentaren in einer Perlschrifttype umflossen, Rubriken, Überschriften, Kapitelnummern, Hervorhebungen und Absatzmarken sind in Rot eingesetzt. Entsprechend gibt es auch keine Titel, sondern lediglich Incipits und Druckerangabe im rotgedruckten Kolophon, die im folgenden zitiert werden. Die dreiviertelblattgroßen Dedikations-Holzschnitte zeigen einen Papst, dem die Dekrete übergeben werden, darunter kleine Szenen aus dem Kirchen- und Zivilrecht. Bonifacius verfolgte energisch das Ziel, die päpstliche Gewalt zur höchsten auf Erden zu erheben und alle weltlichen Herrscher dem Papst Untertan zu machen. In der Bulle "Unam Sanctam" von 1302 trieb er die hierarchische Anmaßung aufs äußerste, indem er den Papst für den Inhaber der obersten geistlichen und weltlichen Gewalt erklärte, dem jede menschliche Kreatur um ihres Heils willen untertänig sein müsse. Dante hat Bonifacius VIII. dafür einen Platz in der Hölle angewiesen. Die Dekrete wurden seit 1465 – zuerst durch Fust und Schöffer – immer wieder nachgedruckt und durch die anderer Päpste, wie Klemens V. und Johannes XXII. erweitert. – Von ganz minimalen Bräunungen abgesehen, durchgehend sauberes, tadellos erhaltenes Exemplar der höchst seltenen Ausgabe, gebunden in einem schönen Pergamentband. La "Summa" del Beato Angelo Carletti da Chivasso (nato nel 1411 e morto nel convento dei frati minori osservanti di Cuneo, ove le sue spoglie sono tuttora conservate e venerate) fu opera utilissima per confessori e moralisti, superando tutte le altre, e pertanto suscito' l'odio di Lutero che volle che l'opera fosse bruciata. La seconda opera si deve a Sant'Antonino, arcivescovo domenicano di Firenze (1389-1459); conosciuta col titolo di "Defecerunt", prima parte del "Confessionale", ebbe notevole fortuna in quanto manuale pratico per i confessori. Basel, Adam Petri, 1511.. 47-zeiliges O-Postinkunabelblatt mit einem Holzschnitt (13,8 x 7,4 cm), einer Holzschnittleiste und einer vierzeiligen Initiale. Blatt fest mit hellen Flecken im Rand. Blattmaße: 29,4 x 19,2 cm. Sauberer klarer Holzschnittabdruck des Heiligen Sebaldo. Seltenes Wasserzeichen: Mühlenrad mit Handkurbel.. Sebaldus lebte nach manchen Überlieferungen schon im 8. Jahrhundert an der Stelle des Ortes Poppenreuth - heute ein Stadtteil von Fürth bei Nürnberg. Er lebte wohl tatsächlich als Geistlicher und Einsiedler im Reichswald - heute innerhalb des Stadtgebiets von Nürnberg. Legenden nennen Sebaldus einen dänischen Königssohn, der seine Verlobung mit einer französischen Prinzessin löste, um als Einsiedler zu leben. Nach 15 Jahren in der Wildnis in der Gegend um Nürnberg unternahm er demnach zusammen mit seinem Schüler Dionysius barfuß eine Wallfahrt nach Rom. Er überquerte dabei auf seinem Mantel segelnd - wie später Raimund von Penafort - einen reißenden Fluss - die Donau - und half einem armen Bauern bei der Suche nach seinen verloren gegangenen Ochsen, indem er seine Finger wie Lampen leuchten ließ. Auf der Rückkehr von dieser Pilgerfahrt habe er durch eine wunderbare Brotspeisung, die ihm ein Engel darreichte, Willibald und Wunibald gerettet und sie aus einem Weinfass getränkt, das sich auf wundersame Weise immer wieder füllte. In Rom vom Papst beauftragt, als Glaubensbote zu wirken, hielt Sebaldus demnach bei Vicenza eine Predigt, bei der ein lästernder Ketzer in einem Erdspalt versank, aber von ihm gerettet wurde. Einen Mann, der ihm gegen das Verbot der Heiden einen Fisch brachte und deshalb von den Heiden geblendet wurde, heilte er. EineFeuer entündete er mit einem brennenden Eiszapfen, was einen geizigen Wagner von seiner Habsucht befreit haben soll. Der hier vorliegende Text erwähnt seinen Besuch der Stadt Regensburg. Die Legende besagt, dass nach Sebaldus Tod sich Ochsen von selbst vor den Wagen spannten, um seinen Leichnam an die Stelle zu bringen, wo sein Grab sein sollte; hier steht heute die Kirche St. Peter und Paul im Fürther Stadtteil Poppenreuth; dies war bis ins 13. Jahrhundert die Mutterpfarrei von St. Sebald in Nürnberg. Sebaldus Verehrung ist seit 1072 belegt, nachdem sich die Kunde von Krankenheilungen an seinem Grab ausbreitete. Es ereigneten sich viele Wunder: Blinde wurden sehend, Sündern wurde vergeben; dereinst benützte Sebaldus seine Skeletthand, um einem lästernden Soldaten eine ordentliche Maulschelle zu verpassen. Sebaldus Kopf brachte man zu erkrankten schwangeren Frauen, er wurde angerufen von Pilger zum Schutz vor gefährlichen Räuberbanden auf ihrem Weg nach Rom und von sturmgeplagten Seefahrern, damit er die tobenden Winde besänftige. 1361 bis 1372wurde die nach Sebaldus benannte Kirche in Nürnberg errichtet. Der Rat der Stadt förderte zielstrebig seine Verehrung als Stadtpatron und Symbol des Selbstverständnisses der Stadt. Peter Vischer, berühmter Nürnberger Erzgießer der Spätgotik, fertigte 1508 - 1519 das Bronzegehäuse für den Sarg des Sebaldus nach einem Entwurf von Adam Kraft. Das Hindurchschlüpfen unter dem Sarg heile Gebrechen; Sebaldus Kopf brachte man zu erkrankten schwangeren Frauen.

Martel d'apres la preface a Daniel Boyvin et la dedicace en vers, la troisieme par W. Criep d'apres la preface. Certains exemplaires portent Jacobum Du puy comme imprimeur, car les deux imprimeurs de cet ouvrage furent Duval et Dupuy. §Plein Veau blond XVIIIe. Dos lisse orne. Piece de titre en maroquin rouge. Mors superieur fendu en queue et en tete sur 1cm. Mors frottes. Charmant exemplaire. §Jean Second (1511-1536) est un humaniste et un poete erotique neerlandais neo-latin. Son œuvre la plus connue, le Livre des baisers, a notamment ete imitee par Ronsard et ses disciples. Dans ce recueil compose de dix-neuf poemes, en partie imites de Catulle et des anthologies grecques, le theme du baiser est explore dans tous ses aspects : baisers secs ou mouilles, pudiques ou lascifs, furieux ou apaisants... Auteur prolifique, Jean Second a produit au cours de sa breve existence de nombreux ecrits. Le livre reunit ses elegies de nombre de ses ouvrages dont celui des Baisers. L'ouvrage contient le meilleur ouvrage de Angeriano, le Eropaegnon, publie originellement a Florence en 1512, Livre sur l'amour. Michel Tarchaniota Marullus est decede en 1500, sans doute ne a Constantinople et eleve a Florence, fut parraine par Laurent de Medicis. Il ecrivit des Hymnes et des epigrammes a l'imitation de Lucrece, presents dans ce recueil. Jean Second est certainement le poete le plus important de cette triade, qui eut une influence sur les ecrivains de la Renaissance, mais egalement sur les poetes jusqu'a la fin du XIXe siecle.Photos sur www.Edition-originale.com. apud Dionysium Duvallium. April 7, 180 AD[1]), was a Christian chronicler of the early Church who may have been a Jewish convert and certainly wrote against heresies of the Gnostics and of Marcion. The date of Hegesippus is insecurely fixed by the statement of Eusebius that the death and apotheosis of Antinous (130) occurred in Hegesippus' lifetime and that he came to Rome under Pope St. Anicetus (Bishop of Rome, ca 175-189) and wrote in the time of Pope St. Eleuterus. Eusebius says that St. Hegesippus was a convert from Judaism, learned in the Semitic languages and conversant with the oral tradition and customs of the Jews, for he quoted from the Hebrew, was acquainted with the Gospel of the Hebrews[8] and with a Syriac Gospel, and he also cited unwritten traditions of the Jews. The American theologian Robert M. Price has recently questioned the historical authenticity of Hegesippus: "I suspect that 'He-gesippus' is a garbled version of 'Josephus', made into a catch-all pedigree for whatever tradition or belief one wished to retroject into an earlier 'apostolic' period." Vignette de l'imprimeur sur la page de titre. On remarquera que la grande marque d'imprimeur n'est pas la meme en 1507 (un lion et un leopard le regard a senestre, avec des oiseaux dans l'arbre, les initiales J et P reliees par une corde nouee) que celle habituelle (deux lions se regardant avec un ecu portant une fleur de lys, tenue par leurs pattes). §Indications d'impression dans Colophon excepte pour le deuxieme volume, dont la date est presente sur la page de titre. Le colophon des deux premiers livres donne egalement la date de la premiere edition, 1494 (les bibliotheques donnent plutot 1498) pour sermones de Adventu et 1498 pour Quadragesimale. Jehan Petit reimprima plusieurs fois ces sermons de 1506 a 1522, Brunet. Quant au troisieme volume, la British Library en possede un exemplaire de 1506, mais ne contenant pas la troisieme partie sur la Passion du Christ , et compte 22f. pour la seconde partie, la bibliotheque Saint Genevieve n'en comptant que 21f. et nous 20 (sans doute 21 avec le dernier feuillet blanc place a la fin de la 3e partie). Brunet annonce que la bibliotheque de Nantes possede une edition du sermon sur la passion du Christ avec 16ff. mais sans indication d'imprimeur ou de lieu, et qui semble la meme que la notre. §Pleine Basane brune d'epoque. Dos a nerfs orne de fleurons. Filet d'encadrement sur les plats. Ensemble hativement restaure (deux caissons de coiffes, mors et coins). Mors fendus. §Olivier Maillard (1430-1502), vicaire general des observants franciscains de France en 1502, est une des plus grandes figures de la predication franciscaine a la fin du XVe. Predicateur de Louis XI et du duc de Bourgogne, Olivier Maillard (originaire de Bretagne et mort a Toulouse) ne semblait jamais trouver de mots assez durs ni d'expressions assez imagees pour ses sermons. Sa reputation est principalement fondee sur les predications qu'il fit pendant les annees 1494 et 1508 dans l'eglise de Saint-Jean en Greve a Paris et les libertes etranges qu'il s'y donna. ?Jamais personne n'avait attaque toutes les classes et toutes les professions sociales avec plus de hardiesse, de virulence et de mauvais gout. Chacun de ses sermons est une satire amere et outrageante, revetue d'un langage grossier, trivial, et de mots empruntes aux mauvais lieux du plus bas etage? (Hoefer). Le style d'Olivier Maillard fut qualifie de ?macaronique? par Sainte-Beuve dans son Tableau historique et critique de la poesie et du theatre francais au XVIe siecle. §Voir Moreau, Inventaire chronologique des editions parisiennes du XVIe siecle. §'Frere Olivier MAILLARD etait un predicateur du XVe siecle qui acquit beaucoup de celebrite en prononcant plusieurs sermons latins meles de francais, dans lesquels il declama contre les vices des grands, des gens d'Eglise et des hommes de loi.' Paris: N. de Pratis for F. Regnault & J. Frellon, 1511. A handsome copy of this attractive early edition of Pliny!s Natural History, edited by Nicolas Maillard for the university students of Paris. Maillard was rector of the Sorbonne in 1521, advocated the necessity of Greek and Latin for all theologians, and was a friend and correspondent of Erasmus. Pliny!s Natural History !comprises thirty-seven books dealing with mathematics and physics, geography and astronomy, medicine and zoology, anthropology and physiology, philosophy and history, agriculture and mineralogy, the arts and letters.!!Printing & the Mind of Man 5!(1st ed.: Venice, 1469). Fine crisp copy of a rare edition. With the characteristic red stamp on verso of title of August Ferdinand, Graf von Veltheim (1741-1801), an important mining official in the Harz Mountains and the author of a number of mineralogical and mining works. SINGLE LEAF. - Original woodcut from 'Die grosse Passion' (The Large Passion). A fair impression after the 1511 text edition, this copy without text, closely trimmed to the image. With a few wormholes; at some places neatly repaired, somewhat browned. Dated 1510 and with monogram signature at the bottom of the block. Image size 39 x 27,7 cm. The woodcut shows Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his Crucifixion. Dürer shows him floating above the tomb while the guards sleep. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), a native of Nurnberg in Germany, was one of the most learned of the Renaissance artists and ranked among the great minds of Humanism. His paintings and woodcuts include examples of the splendour of creation and skilled portrayals of biblical narratives. Durer began the Large Passion about 1496-97. Over the next few years, Durer added six additional woodcuts, and the seven were sold as single sheets. Durer returned to the series about 1510, adding 4 more woodcuts, and published the series with a frontispiece and a Latin text by Benedictus Chelidonius printed on the verso of the prints in 1511. Exemplorum Libri Decem... Strasbourg, Matthias Sch¥rer, 1511 ; petit in-folio. 4 ff. n. ch., XCIX ff. (le dernier chiffre par erreur XCXIX) caract. romains. Deuxieme edition strasbourgeoise, la premiere ayant paru chez le meme editeur en 1509. Une edition avait d'abord paru a Venise en 1507. - Ritter 2048 (qui ne signale pas les 4 ff. du debut.) - L'ouvrage est du aux soins d'Egnatius qui en avait recu le manuscrit de l'auteur mourant. L'erudit italien Sabellicus est ne a Vicovaro pres de Rome en 1436 et mort a Venise en 1506. Dans sa jeunesse il fut l'eleve de Pomponius Laetus. Il vecut longtemps a Venise et publia une histoire de cette cite. "Ses infirmites, qui etaient plus le fruit de ses debauches que de ses travaux, l'obligerent a se demettre en 1505 de son poste de bibliothecaire de Saint-Marc." Il mourut de maladie venerienne "gallica tabe ex vaga Venere quaesita, non obscure consumptus" dit P. Jove. Les ff. liminaires de cette edition portent une lettre de Beatus Rhenanus, un poeme de D. Palladius Soranus et l'epitre dedicatoire de J. B. Egnatius au doge de Venise Leonardus Lauretanus. Beau volume, dans un interessante reliure monastique du debut du XVIe siecle. Grandes marges. Quelques trous de vers marginaux sur certains cahiers. Ex-libris manuscrit sur le 1er titre : Jacobi Rochlinet Couvent des Capucins de Cella Ratsol (...?)"

Bellaportada a dos tintas con marca del impresor grabada en el centro, 10 grabados en madera por el texto, hermosas letras capitulares historiadas a gran tamaño. Importante encuadernación heráldica francesa del siglo dieciocho en pleno marroqués burdeos, doble filete dorado en los planos con escudo de armas en oro en el centro, lomera decorada con hierros, ruedas y puntillé dorado, rueda dorada en los cantos y contracnatos, cabeza y cortes dorados. Magnífica edición impresa con gran esmero artístico y tipográfico. Texto de la obra en el centro enmarcado por los comentarios. Al comienzo de cada capítulo un grabado en madera. Marco Anneo Lucano, sobrino de Séneca, nació en Córdoba en el 39 d. de C., aunque se crió en Roma. El éxito que obtuvieron las lecturas públicas de sus poemas provocaron la envidia del emperador, que tenía veleidades literarias, y Lucano cayó en desgracia. Nerón le prohibió escribir poesía y ejercer la abogacía en los tribunales. Acusado de participar en la conjura de Pisón fue obligado a suicidarse, igual que su tío Séneca, en el 65 d. de C, a la edad de 26 años. La “Pharsalia” es la única obra que conservamos completa de él. El verdadero nombre de la obra es “Bellum Civile”, aunque ha pasado a la posteridad con el nombre de la gran batalla que enfrentó a César y Pompeyo, la Pharsalia. La obra es un poema épico-histórico escrito en hexámetros que tiene como tema la guerra civil entre César y Pompeyo. Referencias: Palau 143159

Lyons: Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel, 1535. Folio (16 3/8 x 11 2/8 inches). Large woodcut on title-page, 49 fine double-page woodcut maps ("Europae", map 4 remargined with some decorative border and letterpress in facsimile, one marginal repair not affecting image or text) and one single-page map, most with text on versos enclosed within elaborate woodcut borders (attributed to Hans Holbein and Urs Graf); text with 4 large woodcut diagrams and 2 full-page woodcuts of a diagram and armillary sphere showing the projection of the winds by Albrecht Durer (verso of map l4), woodcut initials. Near contemporary paneled calf, each cover decorated with broad borders of blind fillets and elaborate roll tool, with gilt fleurons at each corner, the central panel decorated with small gilt tools, remains of two pairs of brass clasp and catches (rebacked to style, extremities worn). The first edition to be edited by Michael Villanovanus, better known as Servetus (1511-1553), born at Villanueva, in Aragon, Spain. While working as an editor for the publisher Trechsel he wrote the preface and many of the modern descriptions on the verso of the celebrated maps. He also edited a second edition printed at Vienne in the Dauphiné, in 1541. For his writings against the Holy Trinity and infant baptism Servetus was burnt at the stake in 1553. However there were forty counts of heresy against him, including the offence of having asserted, in the text accompanying map 41 (The Holy Land), that Palestine was not as fertile as it was generally believed. Many copies of the book were burned with him on the orders of John Calvin, although the offending passage was not actually written by Servetus, and had appeared previously in the 1522 and 1525 editions, and was pointedly omitted from the second edition of 1541. A FINE COPY of the first Venetian edition of Ptolemy's Geography is a cartographical advancement of primary importance, being the first example of two color printing in western cartography, the first atlas to contain a cartographical representation of Japan, and only the second edition of the "Geography" to show the New World. The 1511 Ptolemy is unique among Italian editions, as it was printed with woodcuts, with the place names printed from type inserted into the block. A landmark edition of the "Geography", which broke new ground under the august editorship of Bernardus Sylvanus. The bold Sylvanus was unafraid to make changes and modernize the overarching work of Ptolemy, breaking new ground for his successors. The final map of the volume, that of the modern world, is the first known cordiform map.This copy is also significant because there are several annotations in a contemporary hand in Latin, with some manuscript place names added to the French and Italian maps, a prior owner having carried on in the spirit of Sylvanus. Les 2 pieces reliees en 1 vol petit-in-4 (130 x 200 mm), basane havane, dos orne a nerfs (reliure de la fin du XVIIe siecle). Edition originale des Statuts du comtat venaissin imprimee a Avignon par Thomas Des Cloches. Au verso du titre : Statuta edita per reverendissimum in Christo patrem dominum Henricum episcopum ruthenensen rectorem comitatus Venayssimi. Et confirmata per Fe Re. Clementam papam septinum. Une des premieres impressions avignonnaises ornee sur le titre de 2 gravures sur bois : Vierge a l'enfant (30 x 50 mm) et les armoiries de Julien de La Rovere (70 x 50 mm) ; ces memes armoiries sont copiees a l'encre au verso du titre. Le texte imprime est copieusement annote en marges et suivi de feuillets manuscrits qui sont le commentaire anonyme latin de chaque article (Annotationes ad Statuta Comitatus venaissini). L'ensemble de ces notes a certainement ete redige autour de 1700 ; quelques annnotations manuscrites dans le texte et un ex-libris biffe sur le titre sont en revanche de l'epoque de l'impression. Ex-libris armorie et manuscrit du comte Victor de Gaudemaris (1835-1918), conservateur du musee des photographies documentaires de Provence, accompagne d'une note manuscrite en regard : Extraits du livre des statuts du comte venaissin existant (a) la cour de la rectorie du d. comtat venaissin , par honorable homme maitre romain filieul {filoili} notaire et secretaire de la communaute de Carpentras et par Jean Rouland {Rolandi} et (a) {Raimondi} aussi notaires et greffiers de laditte cour de la Rectorie. Nota {ce livre est rare}. Mouillure marginale, leger manque de papier sans atteinte au texte au dernier feuillet, premier plat legerement epiderme. Comme l'exemplaire decrit par Brunet, le notre est incomplet du dernier feuillet blanc (a-f par huit et g par sept). Written by a priest and chapel singer named Sebastian Virdung, it provided rudimentary instruction on playing three instruments: the clavichord, the lute and the recorder. This early? do-it-yourself? manual of instruction not only tells us about music-making in that era, it also illumines other aspects of society in the years just before the Reformation. Its author communicates in a popular style, choosing a mixture of media: a written text in the guise of an informal conversation, coupled with woodcut illustrations and visual aids. "Gregory is certainly one of the most notable figures in Ecclesiastical History. He has exercised in many respects a momentous influence on the doctrine, the organization, and the discipline of the Catholic Church. To him we must look for an explanation of the religious situation of the Middle Ages; indeed, if no account were taken of his work, the evolution of the form of medieval Christianity would be almost inexplicable. And further, in so far as the modern Catholic system is a legitimate development of medieval Catholicism, of this too Gregory may not unreasonably be termed the Father. Together 2 works in one volume, folio, 311 x 207 mm, bound in contemporary blind-tooled Italian brown calf over pasteboard, sides paneled with triple (two thin, one thick) fillets, two borders of different foliate rolls enclosing two squares each composed of a floral roll around a central lozenge, sewn on three double cords, spine tooled with triple fillets to a saltire design. An extremely fine composite volume bringing together two early Italian illustrated editions of classical texts, preserved in its original Italian blind-tooled binding. Plautus: First fully illustrated edition of Plautus' comedies, second edition with the commentaries of Saracenus and Valla. Lost during the Middle Ages, 20 comedies, plus one fragment, of the 150 plays attributed to Plautus were rediscovered during the Renaissance and widely translated, influencing Shakespeare and later Moliere. Filled with jokes, puns, alliteration and often rowdy word-play, bordering on musical comedy with their consistent use of song and recitative, Plautus' plays were free adaptations from the slightly earlier Greek "New Comedy," a pure comedy of manners using stock characters and turns of plot. Plautus' "flow of wit and vigour of language" revived the genre and account for his "supreme popularity on the Roman stage" (Oxford Companion to the Theatre). His surviving plays still provide almost the only extant evidence for spoken Latin during the 3rd and 2nd century B.C. The illustrations of this edition provide some of the earliest visual testimony to Renaissance performance practice. Commissioned by the printer Lazzaro de'Soardi for his 1497 edition of Terence, the striking full-page woodcut of a "coliseum or theatre" unusually depicts the stage and circular seating area from the actors' point of view, showing on either side the curtained compartments from which the players emerge. Prince d'Essling, the eminent scholar of early Venetian book illustration, considered this woodcut among the finest work of the time. Showing from two to six characters, the charming text illustrations are composed of separate small blocks of figures, trees and the same curtained doorways as those depicted in the large theatre cut. This manner of assembling cuts was first used by the Strasbourg printer Johann Gruninger for his 1496 editions of Terence, and seems to be associated with theatre in early Italian book illustration. It is a graphic device that is particularly appropriate for Plautus, whose plays were built up from a variety of stock plots, incidents, scenes, characters and passages of dialogue taken from a hodge-podge of different sources. (Mortimer notes that "there was a certain amount of adjustment of blocks at press," and individual copies vary in the blocks used for the illustrations.) This copy has the first state of the title and its conjugate leaf (aa1.10): the title is found either in a longer version printed in Gothic type, as here, or in roman type and considerably shortened, as in the Hofer copy at Harvard. The editors' dedicatory epistles on the title verso also differ in the two states, and the conjugate aa10 was reset, with several variants of spelling, some described by Mortimer, who states that the "roman-title setting" is more accurate. Ovid: Rare and beautiful edition of Ovid's Heroides. Ovid's elegiac letters written from the heroines of legend and history to their lovers read like dramatic monologues, and the woodcut illustrations in this edition are similar to those of the Plautus in their three-part format, showing the characters of each poem engaged in different actions, as if scenes from a play. Like the cuts of the Plautus, the illustrations of this edition of Ovid exemplify the conservation and repeated reuse of woodblocks in the first century of printing, passed from one printer to another throughout several decades, for use in often unrelated editions. The text illustrations were previously used by the Venetian printer Tacuino's 1501 and 1512 editions of Ovid. The marvelous title border with stylized dolphins is one of the most attractive and frequently imitated woodcuts of the 16th-century book. First recorded in a 1511 edition of Vitruvius printed by Tacuino in Venice, it may have been used previously in editions now lost. "There are a number of variations on this dolphin composition, and! it was one of the most influential pieces of ornamentation of the sixteenth century" (Mortimer, p. 755). Countless copies, some close, as here, others either more crudely cut or diverging stylistically from the original model, appeared from presses all over Italy during the next few years, and its influence extended as far as France, Switzerland and Germany. This edition is exceptionally rare: other than the Modena copy listed by Sander we can trace only one other copy, at the Bibliotheque nationale de France. No copies are listed in RLIN, OCLC, COPAC, or Edit-16. PROVENANCE: contemporary inscriptions on lower endleaves [regarding binding?]. Petrus Buoninsegnus, Siena 1814, typographic booklabel (examples of this bookplate are known with different dates, e.g. 1802). Marginal dampstaining to first and last few leaves, some discreet paper repairs to outer page edges at end and occasionally elsewhere, tear in leaf i7 of the Ovid; binding rubbed in places and with a few small wormholes, otherwise a fresh copy. Maillard was rector of the Sorbonne in 1521, advocated the necessity of Greek and Latin for all theologians, and was a friend and correspondent of Erasmus. Pliny’s Natural History “comprises thirty-seven books dealing with mathematics and physics, geography and astronomy, medicine and zoology, anthropology and physiology, philosophy and history, agriculture and mineralogy, the arts and letters.”–Printing & the Mind of Man 5–(1st ed.: Venice, 1469). Fine crisp copy of a rare edition. With the characteristic red stamp on verso of title of August Ferdinand, Graf von Veltheim (1741-1801), an important mining official in the Harz Mountains and the author of a number of mineralogical and mining works. Augmented edition of THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF VITRUVIUS (1511), the first attempt to establish a critical text of the only surviving ancient architectural treatise, one notoriously difficult for its technical matter and crabbed means of expression. It is notable that this was undertaken by a practicing architect, Fra Giovanni Giocondo, equally at home in the practice of building and in the finer points of humanist philology: he worked on St. Peter's with Raphael and Bramante and supervised construction after the latter's death in 1514. "Fra Giocondo's publication of his edition of Vitruvius in 1511 is the best remembered of his Venetian projects... Fra Giocondo's claim for his edition is that he reconciled the reconstituted Latin text with the extant Roman ruins. Although Manfredo Tafuri criticizes his Latin edition as less rigorous than the editio princeps of Sulpizio, and Francesco Pellati considers his assertive interventions worthy of a translator rather than an editor, Lucia Ciapponi has shown that Fra Giocondo's corrections and filling of lacunae were based on manuscripts unknown to the earlier editor. Fra Giocondo had distinguished counselors in Venice, including Pietro Bembo, Giovanni Lascaris, and Giovanni Marco da Landinara, an expert in optics, who assisted him with the illustrations. The graphic segment is of course the great breakthrough of Fra Giocondo's edition. Although seemingly coarse and diagrammatic, the illustrations are logical and clear. The woodcut illustrations, based on drawings probably prepared by Fra Giocondo himself, are assumed to have been made by the publisher" (M. Pollak in Millard, Italian, p. 493). The present work contains the 136 Tacuino woodcuts of the 1511 first edition in smaller format, plus 4 new woodcuts, and is further augmented by Frontinus's treatise on aqueducts. The work was reprinted in 1522. Maillard was rector of the Sorbonne in 1521, advocated the necessity of Greek and Latin for all theologians, and was a friend and correspondent of Erasmus. Pliny’s Natural History "comprises thirty-seven books dealing with mathematics and physics, geography and astronomy, medicine and zoology, anthropology and physiology, philosophy and history, agriculture and mineralogy, the arts and letters."–Printing & the Mind of Man 5–(1st ed.: Venice, 1469). Fine crisp copy of a rare edition. With the characteristic red stamp on verso of title of August Ferdinand, Graf von Veltheim (1741-1801), an important mining official in the Harz Mountains and the author of a number of mineralogical and mining works. Original blind-panelled pigskin over wooden boards, clasps gone, two tears at top and bottom of spine. None of these editions is in Adams. A rare volume of three important texts in medieval canon law and very nicely printed by the short-lived partnership of three of Basel's greatest printers, Adam Petri, Johann Amerbach and Johan Froben. First work: The great work on canon law by Bonifacius VIII (Benedetto Gaetano). He added a large number of constitutions to the general ecclesiastical legislation, which came to be known as Liber Sextus, since the Decretals of Gregory IX, promulgated in 1239, consists of five books. Giovanni d'Andrea was one of the great canonists of his age and his gloss is incorporated in all early editions. Verso third leaf - recto fifth leaf contain the Arbor consanguinitatis and the Arbor affinitatis of Johannes Andreae. Second work: Clement V was elected pope in 1305 as successor to Benedict XI. He fixed his residence in Avignon thus inaugurating the seventy years' 'Captivity'. Clement was seen as being heavily dependant on the French king, Philip the Fair, who insisted on a formal condemnation of Clement's predecessor, Bonifacius VIII, on charges of heresy and immorality. Third work: John XII was elected pope in 1316 as candidate of Robert of Anjou and fixed his residence in Avignon where he remained the rest of his life. His reign was filled with theological and political conflicts. He was however a capable administrator, enlarged and reorganized the Curia, put the Papal finances on a sound basis and strengthened the hierarchy by founding new, and defining the frontiers of old, dioceses. - Some small worming throughout mostly but not exclusively limited to the lower blank margin, first title neatly rebacked, ownership inscription at top of first title dated 1588. Numerous contemporary marginal annotations in red ink.

Hadrianus Junius (alias Adriaan de Jonge) was born 1511 in northern Holland. He became a physician after studying medicine and philosophy in Leuven and Bologna. His first book was published in 1555. This is his second book. The fine woodcut emblems are by Gerard van Kampen and Arnold Nicolai after original designs by Geoffroy Ballain and Peter Huys. Each emblem has a decorative typographical border along with a caption that explains the emblem's meaning. The text is bright and clean, the attractive vellum is lightly age-soiled; a clean, very good to near fine copy.

An extremely fine composite volume bringing together two early Italian illustrated editions of classical texts, preserved in its original Italian blind-tooled binding. Plautus: First fully illustrated edition of Plautus' comedies, second edition with the commentaries of Saracenus and Valla. Lost during the Middle Ages, 20 comedies, plus one fragment, of the 150 plays attributed to Plautus were rediscovered during the Renaissance and widely translated, influencing Shakespeare and later Molière. Filled with jokes, puns, alliteration and often rowdy word-play, bordering on musical comedy with their consistent use of song and recitative, Plautus' plays were free adaptations from the slightly earlier Greek "New Comedy," a pure comedy of manners using stock characters and turns of plot. Plautus' "flow of wit and vigour of language" revived the genre and account for his "supreme popularity on the Roman stage" (Oxford Companion to the Theatre). His surviving plays still provide almost the only extant evidence for spoken Latin during the 3rd and 2nd century B.C. The illustrations of this edition provide some of the earliest visual testimony to Renaissance performance practice. Commissioned by the printer Lazzaro de'Soardi for his 1497 edition of Terence, the striking full-page woodcut of a "coliseum or theatre" unusually depicts the stage and circular seating area from the actors' point of view, showing on either side the curtained compartments from which the players emerge. Prince d'Essling, the eminent scholar of early Venetian book illustration, considered this woodcut among the finest work of the time. Showing from two to six characters, the charming text illustrations are composed of separate small blocks of figures, trees and the same curtained doorways as those depicted in the large theatre cut. This manner of assembling cuts was first used by the Strasbourg printer Johann Grüninger for his 1496 editions of Terence, and seems to be associated with theatre in early Italian book illustration. It is a graphic device that is particularly appropriate for Plautus, whose plays were built up from a variety of stock plots, incidents, scenes, characters and passages of dialogue taken from a hodge-podge of different sources. (Mortimer notes that "there was a certain amount of adjustment of blocks at press," and individual copies vary in the blocks used for the illustrations.) This copy has the first state of the title and its conjugate leaf (aa1.10): the title is found either in a longer version printed in Gothic type, as here, or in roman type and considerably shortened, as in the Hofer copy at Harvard. The editors' dedicatory epistles on the title verso also differ in the two states, and the conjugate aa10 was reset, with several variants of spelling, some described by Mortimer, who states that the "roman-title setting" is more accurate. Ovid: Rare and beautiful edition of Ovid's Heroides. Ovid's elegiac letters written from the heroines of legend and history to their lovers read like dramatic monologues, and the woodcut illustrations in this edition are similar to those of the Plautus in their three-part format, showing the characters of each poem engaged in different actions, as if scenes from a play. Like the cuts of the Plautus, the illustrations of this edition of Ovid exemplify the conservation and repeated reuse of woodblocks in the first century of printing, passed from one printer to another throughout several decades, for use in often unrelated editions. The text illustrations were previously used by the Venetian printer Tacuino's 1501 and 1512 editions of Ovid. The marvelous title border with stylized dolphins is one of the most attractive and frequently imitated woodcuts of the 16th-century book. First recorded in a 1511 edition of Vitruvius printed by Tacuino in Venice, it may have been used previously in editions now lost. "There are a number of variations on this dolphin composition, and… it was one of the most influential pieces of ornamentation of the sixteenth century" (Mortimer, p. 755). Countless copies, some close, as here, others either more crudely cut or diverging stylistically from the original model, appeared from presses all over Italy during the next few years, and its influence extended as far as France, Switzerland and Germany. This edition is exceptionally rare: other than the Modena copy listed by Sander we can trace only one other copy, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. No copies are listed in RLIN, OCLC, COPAC, or Edit-16. PROVENANCE: contemporary inscriptions on lower endleaves [regarding binding?]. Dedica dellautore al suo maestro Luca Ripa, datata Milano 1507. Sotto il titolo vi e' una stupenda silografia a mezza pagina (mm 86 x 95) raffig. le nove Muse che suonano vari strumenti, raccolte sotto gli zampilli della fontana delleterna giovinezza; nel testo altri 9 finissimi legni (mm 63 x 50), ciascuno raffig. una Musa in sfarzosa ed elegante veste e col proprio simbolo distintivo. Prima rarissima edizione di questo interessante trattatello che raccoglie quanto era stato scritto sulle Muse nel mondo antico greco-romano, che il Giraldi (Ferrara 1479 - 1552) aveva iniziato a studiare fin dalladolescenza. Autore di poemi, discorsi, lavori eruditi, Giraldi era considerato dai contemporanei uno dei piu grandi geni prodotti dallItalia negli ultimi secoli. Nel 1527, durante il sacco della citta, perse tutti i suoi averi e, soprattutto, la biblioteca personale. Cerco' allora rifugio presso un nuovo protettore, Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola, che, purtroppo, fu assassinato di li a poco. Rarissimo delizioso figurato di alta scuola tedesca, non registrato in vari repertori bibliografici consultati. Ottimo esemp. a pieni margini. Edition originale des Statuts du comtat venaissin imprimée à Avignon par Thomas Des Cloches. Au verso du titre : Statuta edita per reverendissimum in Christo patrem dominum Henricum episcopum ruthenensen rectorem comitatus Venayssimi. Et confirmata per Fe Re. Clementam papam septinum. Une des premières impressions avignonnaises ornée sur le titre de 2 gravures sur bois : Vierge à l'enfant (30 x 50 mm) et les armoiries de Julien de La Rovère (70 x 50 mm) ; ces mêmes armoiries sont copiées à l'encre au verso du titre. Le texte imprimé est copieusement annoté en marges et suivi de feuillets manuscrits qui sont le commentaire anonyme latin de chaque article (Annotationes ad Statuta Comitatus venaissini). L'ensemble de ces notes a certainement été rédigé autour de 1700 ; quelques annnotations manuscrites dans le texte et un ex-libris biffé sur le titre sont en revanche de l'époque de l'impression. Ex-libris armorié et manuscrit du comte Victor de Gaudemaris (1835-1918), conservateur du musée des photographies documentaires de Provence, accompagné d'une note manuscrite en regard : Extraits du livre des statuts du comté venaissin existant (…) la cour de la rectorie du d. comtat venaissin , par honorable homme maître romain filieul {filoili} notaire et secrétaire de la communauté de Carpentras et par Jean Rouland {Rolandi} et (…) {Raimondi} aussi notaires et greffiers de laditte cour de la Rectorie. Nota {ce livre est rare}. Mouillure marginale, léger manque de papier sans atteinte au texte au dernier feuillet, premier plat légèrement épidermé. Salomone addormentato (al recto del f. 255) e 90 silografie a 1/3 di pag., entro belle bordure a fiori e frutti per il Vecchio Testamento e 23 vignette per il Nuovo. E' la seconda edizione (la prima e' del 1506) dell'opera curata dal veneziano Alberto da Castello o Castellano, religioso dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, che arricchi' il testo di concordanze, varianti testuali, nonche' di prologhi di S. Girolamo e di Sant'Eusebio di Cesarea e di Interpretationes nominum hebraicorum' (La Bibbia da Gutenberg a Bodoni, n. 42). La primera edición de las Decadas de Tito Livio es de Roma: Sweynheym y Pannartz 1469.Magníficamente ilustrada con 174 bellos grabados en madera, tres a plena página, que representan batallas, vistas de ciudades y escenas de vida mundana. Algunos de los grabados tienen el monograma "F". Nagler atribuye los grabados al círculo de Bellini.La Historia de Roma desde su fundación de Tito Livio es uno de los libros que fundan a su vez la literatura histórica: fue admirada por Ovidio, Virgilio, Petronio. Séneca, el gran Tácito, Lucano, Silio Itálico, Valerio Máximo, Floro y así Justino, Dión Casio, Orosio y Casiodoro y todos los antiguos que se dedicaron a escribir sobre historia de Roma. Ab Urbe condita quedó como la mejor historia de la Roma republicana, como la mejor escrita y como la vivaz descripción del desarrollo de una nación y de un sentimiento nacional. La fama del libro de Livio fue considerable también durante la Edad Media y desde Prisciano hasta el renacimiento petrarqueso fue la fuente de la que manó y corrió la historia de la ciudad de Roma. Con Petrarca todo cambió: Livio fue considerado el historiador por antonomasia y el texto que podía hacer renacer el interés por los clásico. El propio Petrarca copió, anotó y completó manuscritos de Livio y con él se llegó al cénit del interés y de la moda humanista por el Ab Urbe condita, con lo que casi todos los humanistas pusieron su grano de interés en comentar y anotar los libros livianos: Lovatti, Beccadelli, Valla, Bruni, Poggio, Beato Renano, Gelenio y todos los grandes editores posteriores quedaron prendados de la grandeza de estilo y la profundidad de historiador de Tito Livio.

Agostino de Zani for Melchior Sessa 4 June 1511, Venice - Modern binding using vellum leaves from a 15th-century manuscript over boards backed with new vellum backing Folio . An important and rare corrected edition of this handsomely printed and illustrated edition of Lucan's epic of the Civil Wars edited by Joannes Sulpitius and Omnibonus of Vicenza. According to d"Essling (cf. vol. p. 271 for illus.) this is also the first appearance of these woodcuts. As occasionally happens during the process of printing there was some variety in the quality of paper used in the printing of this work with the result that about a dozen leaves are foxed and somewhat browned but with the remaining text generally fresh and white. Presumably all copies would have this same problem however due to the rarity of the work I haven't been able to find another copy to compare. No copies located by the OCLC in US libraries [4], 205 leaves (without last blank leaf). Title printed in red, Sessa's cat and mouse device on title and smaller device on last page; 10 woodcut illustrations in the text. About a dozen leaves have browned and there is a small inkstain in outer blank corner of latter part of the work; few minor marginal dampstains; inner margin of first and last few leaves reinforced § d'Essling, Libres a figures Vénitiens II, p. 270, no. 853 (p. 271: illus.); Edit16 CNCE 52789; not in Adams or the BM/STC Italian. (4), XXXIX, (1 bianco), legatura (Bound by Lloyd"") in pieno marocchino verdone, filetto oro ai piatti, titolo e fregi oro al dorso a nervi, ricche dentelle interne. Prima edizione illustrata della Vita di Santa Caterina da Siena. Titolo entro elaborate bordure silografiche con S. Caterina che riceve le stimmate, Adamo ed Eva, S. Giovanni e cornici con elementi vegetali e putti: si tratta di una riduzione e di un'inversione dei legni dell'edizione del 1505; al f. IIII verso Crocifissione a piena pagina inquadrata da legni, tratta dall'edizione del San Bonaventura del 1497; al f. V recto la Vergine, il Bambino ed una serie di figure in adorazione, grande impresa dello stampatore al verso del f. 39. Per la prima volta il testo viene illustrato da una serie di 17 silografie con i passi salienti della vita della Santa. Seconda edizione (prima 1505) di questo poema ascetico in tre libri composto da Giovanni Pollio, detto anche Pollastrino Aretino, letterato, traduttore e canonico originario di Arezzo, vissuto nel sec. XVI. Il testo inizia con uno straordinario dialogo il cui acrostico forma la scritta ìSancta Catarina da Fontebranda ora per el Populo tuo Senese ad Dio nostro Signioreî; mentre è importante notare il fatto che il primo foglio di ogni segnatura riporta, insieme alla lettera del quaderno, il titolo ìS.CATH.î. Eí questa una caratteristica che non abbiamo riscontrato in altre edizioni cinquecentesche, attuata per aiutare il compito del rilegatore affinché non mischiasse quaderni di opere diverse. Importante documento della diffusione del culto della Santa e della nascita di una iconografia della sua vita. Rarissima edizione, di cui un solo esemplare è conservato in biblioteche italiane; buon esempl. (lievi ingialliture). Sander 5827. Essling 1746. Venetiis per Simonem de Luere 1511 - In Folio (cm 32), pergamena coeva con dorso a 5 nervi e titolo manoscritto, piccole mancanza alla testa ed al piede del dorso, strappato l'angolino bianco inferiore destro della prima carta, qualche rara brunitura, un alone fastidioso all'angolo superiore delle carte tra 153 e 176, peraltro ottimo esemplare genuino abbastanza fresco e ben co Queste pandette sono l'opera principale dell'Autore, medico salernitano attivo agli inizi del secolo XIV, e costituiscono un vocabolario di termini medici desunti dalle opere classiche di Avicenna, Dioscoride, Mesue, uniti ad osservazioni originali dell'A. sulle proprietˆ (positive e negative) delle erbe e dei semplici, e numerosi sono i riferimenti di interesse alimentare e gastronomico su erbe, frutta, carni e pesce. Egli dˆ la spiegazione di un gran numero di vocaboli e presenta l'etimologia di molti nomi; benchŽ Haller, con la sua critica piccante, chiami quest'opera Çbarbari auctoris opus chacticumÈ, tuttavia si riconoscerˆ pi ragionevole il giudizio di Freind, il quale crede che per esattezza e dottrina superi tutte le altre del tempo: Çillud de Sylvatico aequisssime dici potest, facta ab eo quadam in re botanica incremnta, naturamque et virtutem herbarum accuratius descriptam, quam a quovis antea in obscuris istius saeculis esset praestitumÈ. Silvatico ebbe cura di far venire dalla Grecia, i semi della Cantalide (Athamanta cretensis), per coltivarla nel suo orto. é curioso che la Caesalpina fu chiamata da Silvatico Presillum Lignum (quasi legno del Brasile) molto tempo prima che fosse stata scoperta l'America. Il manoscritto dell'Opus Pandectarum Medicinae, in latino, conservato a Roma nella Biblioteca Vaticana. L'opera usc" come incunabolo, poi edito anche nel XVI secolo; tuttavia il censimento nazionale ondine delle edizioni del XVI secolo conosce soltanto un altro esemplare di questa edizione (ma mutilo, alla Bibl. del Sem. di Lucca) e pertanto allo stato attuale questo esemplare del 1511 l'unico completo conosciuto, censendo inoltre solo 2 edizioni prima di questa (di cui una dello stesso stampatore Simone da Lovere nel 1507), entrambi note in due soli esemplari. Thomas Des Cloches 1511 Petit in-4 gothique de (55) ff. (le dernier feuillet, blanc g8, manque). Relié à la suite : [Annotationes ad Statuta Comitatus venaissini ]. Manuscrit de (35) ff. Les 2 pièces reliées en 1 vol petit-in-4 (130 x 200 mm), basane havane, dos orné à nerfs (reliure de la fin du XVIIe siècle). 8500 Edition originale des Statuts du comtat venaissin imprimée à Avignon par Thomas Des Cloches. Au verso du titre : Statuta edita per reverendissimum in Christo patrem dominum Henricum episcopum ruthenensen rectorem comitatus Venayssimi. Et confirmata per Fe Re. Clementam papam septinum. Une des premières impressions avignonnaises ornée sur le titre de 2 gravures sur bois : Vierge à l'enfant (30 x 50 mm) et les armoiries de Julien de La Rovère (70 x 50 mm) ; ces mêmes armoiries sont copiées à l'encre au verso du titre. Le texte imprimé est copieusement annoté en marges et suivi de feuillets manuscrits qui sont le commentaire anonyme latin de chaque article (Annotationes ad Statuta Comitatus venaissini). L'ensemble de ces notes a certainement été rédigé autour de 1700 ; quelques annnotations manuscrites dans le texte et un ex-libris biffé sur le titre sont en revanche de l'époque de l'impression. Ex-libris armorié et manuscrit du comte Victor de Gaudemaris (1835-1918), conservateur du musée des photographies documentaires de Provence, accompagné d'une note manuscrite en regard : Extraits du livre des statuts du comté venaissin existant (ä) la cour de la rectorie du d. comtat venaissin , par honorable homme maître romain filieul {filoili} notaire et secrétaire de la communauté de Carpentras et par Jean Rouland {Rolandi} et (ä) {Raimondi} aussi notaires et greffiers de laditte cour de la Rectorie. Nota {ce livre est rare}. Mouillure marginale, léger manque de papier sans atteinte au texte au dernier feuillet, premier plat légèrement épidermé. Comme l'exemplaire décrit par Brunet, le nôtre est incomplet du dernier feuillet blanc (a-f par huit et g par sept).
