Sallustius Crispus, Gaius [i.e., Sallust]
Salvstius.
[Lugduni {i.e., Lyons}: The Aldine Forger, 1504]. Small 8vo. [116] ff. Aldine forgery and expectedly scarce. Printed sans the Aldine device, which Aldus began to use in 1502, but offering a clear knock-off of his famous italic type, this also displays his characteristic initial spaces with guide letters. The text was edited by Thomas Murchius (a.k.a., B. Fidelis). The editor's dedication is dated June, 1504. Rare: COPAC locates only the copy at the University of Manchester library, but we trace other U.K. copies in the British Library and Cambridge University library. In the U.S. and Canada the only copies we find are at the UCLA and the Pierpont Morgan libraries. Provenance: Ownership signatures on the front free endpaper: "J. Turner, 1790" and "John S. Conner / North Bend Ohio / Oct. 18th 1877." Renouard 48:10 and 308:22; Baudrier, VII, 20; Adams S137; Shaw 44; Aldine Press. Catalogue of the Aldine Collection, UCLA, 1115. Full dark walnut modern calf old style: Spine with raised bands accented with gilt and blind rules, the blind ones extending onto covers to terminate in trefoils; burgundy leather author label and gilt date; gilt tools to spine compartments. Blind double fillets framing covers. Heavy browning to the first two and a half signatures and again in the last gathering; minor worm damage to blank area of title-leaf; additional dampstaining, mainly though not exclusively to margins, more often than "occasionally" and yet not quite "throughout." Withal, a reputable copy of a notable forgery.

GAURICO, Pomponio
De sculptura
Rare early edition of this famous work on sculpture, perspective and the aesthetic theory of the plastic arts, of particular importance for the diffusion of perspective theory north of Florence. Kemp characterizes the work's technical innovations as "a curious melange of the Albertian method, using an intersecting plane (the central vertical), and the !workshop' method which depends on the diagonal point(s)" (Science of Art, p. 42, and following for Gaurico's foreshortening method). Midway between Alberti and Vasari, Gaurico's treatise also documents the tremendous increase in cultural prestige which painting underwent during the fifteenth century: the incomparable outpouring of masterpieces of that century stilled the old debates about the dignity of painting and its status as one of the liberal arts. This prestige is here reflected in art criticism as a broad discipline in accord with a humanistic concept of culture, with its emphasis on history and informed evaluative judgement. The work first appeared in 1504 (Florence), and again in 1528 (Antwerp); it proved particularly popular in German-speaking countries, as this imprint from the home of Durer attests. All early editions are quite rare. The work became an instant "classic" in aesthetics and was often anthologized into the 17th century.Pomponio Gaurico (1482-1530) was a professor of philology at the University of Naples, a poet and humanist par excellence. His brother Luca was a celebrated mathematician, and made an influential Latin translation of Peckham's treatise on perspective. * Vagnetti EIIb1; Schlosser-Magnino, pp. 235-239; Kemp, Science of Art, pp. 40-41; modern ed. by A. Chastel & R. Klein (1969).

Bracciolini, Giovanni Francesco (1443-1522).
De officio principis liber.
Roma, Johann Besicken, 29 dicembre 1504. "In-4° (mm 199x137). Very rare original edition of this important treatise about the education of the prince, dedicated by the author, the famous humanist Giovanni Francesco Bracciolini, to Giulio II, who became pope in the same year. Bound in 18th century vellum, with gilt title within painted label on spine; marbled edges. Woodcut decorated initials on dark ground throughout. Some wormholes on the white margins of the first three leaves, dampstains on the first and on the margins of last leaves. STC, Italian, p. 123; Fumagalli, 339; Ascarelli-Menato, p. 95."

Rosario / Rosarium de Juana la Loca. Der Rosenkranz Johanna der Wahnsinnigen. Limitierte Auflage von 999 Exemplaren.
Deutscher Kommentarband von Ulrike Bauer-Eberhardt, Christopher de Hamel., Brügge, 1. Hälfte des 16. Jh.

PALISOT DE BEAUVOIS, Ambroise Marie François Joseph.
Prodrome des Cinquième et Sixième Familles de l'Aethéogamie. Les Mousses. Les Lycopodes.Paris, [François-Ignace and Jean-Baptiste II?] Fournier fils, 1805. 8vo in 4s. Twentieth-century blue boards, morocco spine label, marbled edges.
      - (2), ii, 114 pp. BMC NH, p. 1504; Howard Crum, "Bibliographic Notes on Palisot de Beauvois'Prodome," in: Bull. Torrey Botan. Club, vol. 79, pp. 407-409; Pritzel 6897; Stafleu & Cowan 7213; OCLC WorldCat (7 copies); An early taxonomy of mosses and club mosses (lycopods) that "ranks high among the early taxonomic treatments of both mosses and lycopods" (Crum) and proved especially important for bryologists, because it appeared in the formative years of bryological nomenclature. About one-third of the mosses were collected in North America. A two-page "avertissement" places mosses and club mosses in the broader scheme of Linnaean taxonomy, followed by a 12-page introduction to the mosses, descriptions of 41 genera (about 10 new), and a 53-page table of known varieties of mosses. After a page of errata come a 5-page introduction to the club mosses, descriptions of 7 genera and an 8-page table. Part of the text was originally published in Magasin Encyclopédique, volume 5. Palisot (1752-1820) eschewed the word "cryptogam," prefering "aethéogamie," because there was nothing "cryptic" about the production of these groups, which he considered unusual at most. With a lengthy manuscript note by R.B. (?) in the foot margin of one page. In fine condition. The lovely modern binding also fine. An important early taxonomic work on mosses and club mosses.

SAVONAROLA, Jeronimo
Early edition of the main work of Savonarola Triumphus crucis: De veritate fidei. Fra. Hieronymi de Ferraria. Praedicatoris.
Venice (or Paris?), Lazarus de Soardis, 4 January 1504. 8vo. Modern calf, ribbed spine with red title label lettered in gold. The leather of the original binding - blind tooled with ornamented and floral rolls and fillets - preserved and pasted to the boards. 115 lvs. (A-O8, P4-1, without the last blank). Probably the second edition of the main work, an apology for Christianity by the famous theologian and 'pre-reformer' Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498). The original edition was published in Florence by Bart. di Libri in ca. 1497, shortly before Savonarola's death at the stake. The date 1503 for a Venetian second edition is probably due to a misreading of the colophon: "Finito .. Ex archetypo impresso Venetiis p(er) Lazaru(m) de Soardis; qui obtinuit a d(omi)nio Veneto Anno domini M.D.iii. quod nullus possit impromere: nec imprimi facere in eorum d(omi)nio sub pena ut patet in suis privilegiis. Die. iiii. Januarii. M. qui(n)gentesimo quarto". There is also some confusion as to whether this edition is a Paris reprint of the genuine Venetian edition of the same year. Born in Ferrara, Savonarola was for some time prior of the Convent of San Marco in Florence. Inspired by an aversion for worldly things, and the highest religious ideals, with his example and his obscurely threatening and prophetic sermons he condemned first the corrupt way of life in Florence, then the church hierarchy in Rome. Ignoring numerous reprimands and contemptuous of danger, he was condemned to death: together with his fellow friars, Domenico da Pesica and Silvestro Maruffi, he was hanged and burnt in Piazza Signoria on 23 May 1498. In fact Savonarola's quarrel was with the corruption of the clergy of whom Alexander VI was merely the most scandalous example, not with the Roman pontiff, for whom he always professed obedience and respect. He was a reformer, but Catholic and Thomist to the marrow; his faith is borne out in his many works, the greatest of which is this Triumphus crucis, a clear exposition of the Christian faith, being reprinted and translated many times till far into the nineteenth century. The words on the title page have been arranged in the shape of a cross Fair copy with some 16th century annotations and a 16th century ownership's entry on title: "... (ex li)bris fratris ..."); with armorial book plate of Kerckhove, with the motto "Endurer pour durer".- (Title severely damaged: stamp removed, with some lost of text of the 'Tabula', printed on the verso). PECKHAM, John
Perspective communis
[Edited by Andreas Alexander]. Numerous geometrical woodcuts in the outer margins of the text & woodcut printer's device on recto of final leaf. 38 unnumbered leaves. Small folio, modern pigskin over boards (a few minor stains). [Leipzig: Martin Herbipolensis, 1504]. A rare and handsome early edition of this classic work on optics; it was the most influential text on the subject for three hundred years. This is the first edition to be edited by Andreas Alexander (ca. 1475-ca. 1504), who prepared this edition to instruct students at the University of Leipzig where he had recently been appointed to the faculty of arts (see Lindberg, Theories of Vision from al-Kindi to Kepler, p. 121). Leipzig had, in the 15th and early 16th century, a vigorous tradition of presenting regular lectures on the Perspective communis. "The work on which Pecham's fame has chiefly rested is the Perspectiva communis, probably written between 1277 and 1279 during Pecham's professorship at the papal curia. In the first book Pecham discussed the propagation of light and color, the anatomy and physiology of the eye, the act of visual perception, physical requirements for vision, the psychology of vision, and the errors of direct vision. In book II he discussed vision by reflected rays and presented a careful and sophisticated analysis of image formation by reflection. Book III was devoted to the phenomena of refraction, the rainbow, and the Milky Way... "The central feature of Pecham's optical system and the dominant theme of book I of the Perspectiva communis is the theory of direct vision. Here, as elsewhere, Pecham endeavored to reconcile all the available authorities -- Aristotle, Euclid, Augustine, al-Kindi, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Rushd, Grosseteste, and Bacon... "Pecham's optical system included significantly more than a theory of direct vision. He briefly discussed the doctrine of species; treated at length the propagation of rays; and developed a theory to explain how solar radiation, when passing through noncircular apertures, gives rise to circular images. He expressed the full law of reflection and applied it to image formation by plane, spherical, cylindrical, and conical mirrors; in this analysis he revealed an implicit understanding of the nature of the focal point of a concave mirror... "Pecham's success was greatest in the case of the Perspectiva communis. This text...went through twelve printed editions, including a translation into Italian, between 1482 and 1665. It was used and cited by many medieval and Renaissance natural philosophers, including Dominicus de Clavasio, Henry of Langenstein, Blasius of Parma, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Brudzewski, Francesco Maurolico, Giambattista della Porta, Girolamo Fabrici, Johannes Kepler, Willebrord Snellius, and G.B. Riccioli...The Perspectiva communis was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject."!D.S.B., X, pp. 475-76. Peckham (ca. 1230-1292), took his degrees at Paris and Oxford and in 1279 was elected archbishop of Canterbury. The first edition of the text was published ca. 1482-83. Very good copy preserved in a red morocco-backed box. This edition is very rare.       Deutscher Kommentarband von Ulrike Bauer-Eberhardt, Christopher de Hamel., Brügge, 1. Hälfte des 16. Jh. ARISTOTELES
Commentaria...Egidii Romani in libros de generatione & corruptione Aristotelis cum textu intercluso singulis locis. Questiones...super primo libro de generatione nunc quidem primum in publicum prodeuntes. Questiones...Doctoris Marsilii Inguem in prefa
Woodcut initials & woodcut publisher's device at end. Two columns, Gothic type. 155, [1] leaves. Folio, attractive antique vellum-backed wooden boards (lower outer blank corners of a number of leaves repaired, occasional staining). [Venice: B. Locatellus for O. Scotus, 6 Sept. 1504].pAn important early edition of Aristotle's De Generatione et Corruptione; this is, I believe, the first to contain the three additional commentaries of Egidio Colonna (d. 1316), Marsilius of Inghen (d. 1396), and Albert of Saxony (ca. 1316-90). The De Generatione et Corruptione is one of Aristotle's most important writings on physics and natural science and was written during his years at Plato's Academy. Colonna (d. 1316), also known as Giles of Rome, was a disciple of Thomas Aquinas while a student in Paris. Colonna was the first Augustinian appointed to teach in the University of Paris and his deep learning earned for him the title of Doctor fundatissimus. In 1295 he was appointed Archbishop of Bourges by Pope Boniface VIII. "Although mainly a philosopher and theologian, Giles frequently dealt with problems relating to natural philosophy, notable in his commentaries on Aristotle. Moreover, he did so in a style distinctive enough to place him in the first rank of those thinkers who have made a positive contribution to the scientific thought of their time (see Maier, Die Vorlaufer Galileis, p. 2)... "[His commentary on] the De generatione et corruptione...became [a] classic, and was often utilized by such fourteenth-century physicists as Buridan and Marsilius of Inghen, who considered Giles the communis expositor of the De generatione."!D.S.B., V, pp. 402-03. Marsilius was a high official at the Universities of Paris and Heidelberg and his "chief contributions to science lay in the field of physics...His work places him among the Parisian masters who may be considered to be the precursors of Leonardo and Galileo and the formers of the new physics of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries."!D.S.B., IX, p. 136. Albert of Saxony was a prominent teacher on the faculty of arts at Paris. "Albert's significance in the history of science is primarily that of a transmitter and an intelligent compiler of scientific ideas directly drawn from the works of Buridan, Thomas Bradwardine, William of Ockham, Burley, Oresme, and other writers in the medieval scientific tradition."!D.S.B., I, p. 94. Very good copy. No copy in N.U.C., OCLC, and RLIN. Adams A-1792!(false collation).. First Edition. Hard cover.

Small folio; ff 6, [7-36], 37-302 (f. 300 bound between ff 297-298); some staining on prelims, and old waterstains on final few leaves; neat, contemporary marginalia in some margins; wanting front free endpaper; contemporary full vellum, hand-lettered on spine; tiny old stamp (CSL?) on title. Adams C2407; Kress 25 (wanting colophon); located also at BL and Oxford; Wellcome cites the 1495 edition, and later 16th-century editions, but not this one. Generally catalogued as "Scriptores rei rustica", this collection of Latin texts from the beginning of the Christian era was the chosen reference work in the field of agricultural and rural economy well into the sixteenth century, with five editions printed in the 1400s alone. The essays deal with the problems, concerns and necessities of the "gentleman farmer" (one is reminded of Cicero's "you ask me how I spend my day on my country estate; well, I shall tell you."). Requisite animals and plants are discussed, as well as their care and cultivation, and there are recipes and suggestions for dealing with olive oil, conserves, vinegar, wine, cheese, etc.

GIOACCHINO DA FIORE
PAPALISTA. PROFETIE DI DIVERSE PERSONE SANTE RACCOLTE INSIEME, DOVE CON DIFFICOLTA' SI CONSIDERA E SI ANTIVEDE LA VITA DELLI PONTIFICI, ET IL SUCCESSO DEL MONDO, INCOMMINCIANDO A' LA SCISMA DI TRE PAPI, CHI REGNO' LANNO MCCCC SINO AL PAPA ANGELICO. MANOSCRITTO CARTACEO, META' XVII SECOLO,
in-folio (mm 417x267) su carta con disegni a penna ed acquerello color seppia, ff. 38 n.n. (primo e ultimi 3 ff. bianchi), legatura coeva in cartone rustico.

Opera [ ]: novissime accurate revisa (addito generali super omnibus memoratu dignis regesto) [ ]

BINDING, COLLATION, ETC: Chancery Folio (271 mm x 192 mm). Bound in 17th century French full mottled calf. Spine with raised bands decorated gilt tooled in compartments. Titled in gilt in the 2nd compartment and erroniously labeled "Vol. I" in 3rd compartment. All edges speckled red. Marbled endpapers. Green silk bookmark. 228 leaves (foliated [12], CCXVI). Signatures: pi6 aa6 A-Z6 a-n6. Complete. 3- to 5-line initial spaces with printed guides; unrubricated. Printed in roman letter, with the title printed in large gothic type. Printed marginal notes. Numerous quotations printed in Greek. Astrological diagram on e1r. Preface by Emser on verso of title (pi1v), prefaces by Wimpfeling and Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola on pi5r. Index on leaves pi2r-pi4v. Table of contents (Tabula capitum) at the end of the volume, on leaves n4r-n6r. Colophon on n6r (n6v blank). CONDITION: Very good, attractive copy. Some leaves sightly browned. Occasional neat marginal notes in a very elegant early hand (probably a humanist scholar). Light marginal soiling to a few leaves. Binding rubbed, with some wear to edges. Slightly chipped at foot of spine; short crack at top of rear joint (with some Insignificant worming to top of spine). Generally very clean, bright and attractive copy in solid tight binding. ADDITIONAL NOTES: This scarce edition was edited by Hieronymus Emser, later a vehement opponent of Martin Luther whose tracts were publicly burned by Luther in Wittenberg in 1520. In his prefatory epistle to Prüss, Emser states that his text is carefully based on the 1496 Bologna editio princeps (Goff P-632) which used Pico's autographs, and exhorts Prüss to print with great care. He then adds that the Italians formerly printed with great care, but have latterly become negligent, and it is only just that the Germans, who invented the art of printing, should now again regain their reputation. "Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-94) is, after Marsilio Ficino, the best known philosopher of the Renaissance: his Oration on the Dignity of Man is better known than any other philosophical text of the fifteenth century." [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy] His most important works (all included in this edition) are Heptaplus, Oratio ("Oration on the Dignity of Man"), De Ente et Uno, Apologia Tredecim Quaestionum and Disputationum Adversos Astrologos. The "Heptaplus" is a mystico-allegorical exposition of the Creation narrative of the Book of Genesis. In the Apologia Tredecim Quaestionum Pico defends against the accusation of heresy thirteen of his famous 'nine hundred theses' that he had planned to discuss in Rome. Pico's famous "Oration on the Dignity of Man", seen by many as the 'humanist manifesto' of the Italian Renaissance. Pico's influential attack on astrology Disputationum Adversos Astrologos was read by Kepler who agreed with most of its arguments (cf. Thorndike, VII, p.19). The Tractatus de Ente et Uno an explanation of the concordances between Aristotle's and Plato's philosophies. Also included is the Life of Pico written by his nephew Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola, as well as numerous letters of Pico to illustrious learned friends such as Marsilio Ficino, Angelo Poliziano, Filippo Beroaldo, Cristoforo Landino, Baptista Mantuanus, Gioovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola, Hieronymus Emser, et al. These are particularly useful for understanding the late 15th century humanistic thought. Cc. 166 nn. Testo in carattere romano, 25 linee titolo in gotico. Dedica a Lucrezia Bentivoglia Estense. Ex-libris John Roland Abbey. Graesse I, 54. GIOACCHINO DA FIORE
Papalista.
Ottimo esemplare.

Jean Picart
Civitas Acon sive Ptolomaida
Extremely rare plan of Acre, based upon the Vesconte-Sanuto plan, intended to illustrate a period when the town was under the control of the Knights of St. John.  Shows extensive fortifcations, town plan, buildings and a key identifying significant landmarks. Acre or Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World.  The City dates its history back to Pharaoh Thutmose III (1504-1450 BC).  In its time, it was one of the major ports in the Middle East, on a par with Alexandria and Constantinople.  The town became a part of the empire of Alexander the Great after his conquest of 332  BC.  It was later seized by Egyptian King Ptolemy II, who renamed the city Ptolemais in the 2nd Century BC.  The name flourished until the Muslim's conquered the City in the 7th Century AD.  In 1104, the town was conquered by the Knights of Malta and the town was renamed St. Jean d'Acre.  In 1291, the Mamluks invaded and destroyed the City, killing all the remaining Crusaders, ending its ancient history. In the mid-18th Century, Sheik Daher el-Omar re-established the city in the mid-18th Century when he created a small Kingdom within the Ottoman Empire.  Acre was later fortified by Ahmad Pasha al Jazzer during his time as Turkish Governor (1775-1804).   Napoleon attempted to take the City in 1799, but failed. Acre was taken back by the Ottoman empire, and remained under Turkish control until the region was taken by the British in 1918.  The City became part of the British Mandate of Palestine.  It remained under British Control until it became part of the modern state of Israel.  In May 1947, it was the site of a dramatic attack/rescue by the Irgun. PECKHAM (John).
Perspectiva Communis.
"Peckham's thirteenth century treatise on optics, first published ca. 1482, was the generally accepted medieval handbook on the subject and used in the universities until Kepler's day. His most original contribution to optics is his description of concave refracting surfaces; the first time that such glasses were mentioned" (Source Book of Ohthalmology). Source Book of Ohthalmology, 1755.

(8), CVIII (Homelia prima - Homelia Octuagesima); CXXII (Homelia I - Homelia XLIIII, Liber primus - Liber sextus dialogum, Liber primus - Liber secundus De compunctione cordis, Tractatus de reparatione lapsi, Liber primus - Liber tertius De providentia dei, Sermo I - Sermo XXXVI). A scarce early edition of the first part of the works of St. John Chrysostom (ca. 347-407). The famous Greek preacher, theologian and liturgist, Ionannes Chrysostomos, also Archbishop of Constantinople, was renowned for his eloquence in preaching and public speaking, hence his name (Gold-Mouth). The most famous of his works are probably his Homilies on various books of the Bible and his Sermons, both which are present in this first part of his Works. He is honoured as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and by the Eastern Catholic Churches, and together with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, the two last count him among the Three Holy Hierarchs. In 381 Chrysostomos was ordained a deacon and in 386 a Bishop. He became very popular and admired for his speeches and sermons, and he was particularly well liked among the people because of his concerns for the poor and his outspokenness against abuse of wealth. He was also considered easy to understand, due to his direct interpretations of the Scriptures, which made his preaching practical and aimed at everyday life. He also founded a number of hospitals in Constantinople, which secured him popular support. In 298 he was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople, but he still refused to take advantage of the privileges granted him as such. He thus became more and more popular with the people but less and less popular with the wealthy citizens and the clergy, and he tried to reform the clergy in Constantinople and rid them of their high lifestyle. Due to his ideologies and abilities as a preacher, Chrysostomos became hugely influential, and his works continue to be of the greatest importance. He is now generally considered the most prominent doctor of the Greek Church, and his works are probably the best preserved of those of any of the Greek Fathers.Graesse II:152. Gabriel Barletta (Sometimes called Barlete, De Barolo, Barolus) " Preacher, b., according to some, in the Neapolitan territory at Barletta, whence he took his name, or, according to others, at Aquino; d. sometime after 1480. Little is known of his life other than that he was a Dominican and probably a pupil of St. Antoninus. All his contemporaries held him in high esteem as an orator. He was generally proposed, even during his lifetime, as the model orator. After his death his fame did not diminish, if the popular saying which Altamura has preserved for us be a criterion. Throughout Italy it was the common saying: Nescit praedicare qui nescit barlettare. His sermons appeared in two volumes at Brixen in 1497, and have been reprinted very frequently since. Echardsays that no less than thirteen editions appeared in eighty years. In form his sermons are nothing else than the ordinary homily on the virtues and vices of life. He spares none of the foibles and weaknesses of his contemporaries, and in his denunciations passages of eloquent and biting sarcasm are often met with. At times he descends to an almost burlesque mimicry, as witness his sermon on the manner in which the rich ecclesiastic says the Lord's prayer. Coarse things are also to be found, but not so frequently as in the printed sermons of some of his rivals. Hehas been blamed for this coarseness by Bayle and Theophilus Raynaud, but his name has been completely vindicated by Dominic Casales, O.P., in the work "Candor lilii seu Ordo Praedicatorum a calumniis Petri a Valle Clausa [i.e. Theop. Reynaldi] vindicatus". Some maintain (Tubing, Quartalschrift, 1872, II, 270) that Barletta is not the author of the sermons which bear his name. They base their contention on a sentence of Leander Alberti [Descrizzione di tutta Italia (Bologna, 1550), 200], who says that an unskilled youth whom he knew gathered together old and unknown sermons and ascribed them to Barletta. Furthermore, they must have appeared in the vernacular, whilst we know them in the Latin alone. Thus they have suffered many changes and alterations. But up to the seventeenth century there was no question of the authorship. They show sure signs of the times and are not unworthy of his fame. Hence, scholars generally accept them as authentic." Cc. 166 nn. Testo in carattere romano, 25 linee titolo in gotico. Dedica a Lucrezia Bentivoglia Estense. > Adams, I, 707. Graesse, III, 88. Brunet, II, 1609.

Gaguin, Robert 1433?-1501
Copendium Roberti Gaguini Super Francorum Gestis: Ab Ipso Recognitum & Auctum
Jean Petit, Paris 1504 - Edited by Jodocus Badius Ascensius (i.e. Josse Badius 1462-1535). The title leaf is a full-page woodcut displaying St. Denis, holding his severed head and St. Remi. Between them a pillar bearing the royal arms, at their feet two stags bearing several lines of text. Twelve regional coats-of-arms decorate the borders. Includes the first published work by Desiderius Erasmus, a commendatory letter to Gaguin (originally appearing in the first edition of 1495) on the first three pages of the final five unnumbered leaves. Then follow two pages by Cornelius Gerard of Gouda, an older friend of Erasmus's monastic days; two poems by the editor; a repeat of the title woodcut; the colophon with the attractive printer's device of Jehan Petit. In a contemporary limp leather binding, elaborately tooled in gilt. Somewhat Moorish and perhaps`comparable to the Neapolitan bindings of the late 15c. A scan is available. Gilt gauffered edges. Faint traces of two missing edge ties. A dark stain has damaged a small upper section of the ffep and offset to a comparable section of the woodcut but not affecting legibility. The text and duplicate woodcut facing the colophon are intact. This edition not in British Library or Adams.

PECKHAM, John.
Perspectiva Communis.
      - [Edited by Luca Gaurico]. Large woodcut on title depicting a master & his students, Sessa’s cat & mouse device below, & 77 woodcut diagrams in the text. 20 leaves. Small folio, modern limp vellum with ties. Venice: G.B. Sessa, 1504. A handsome early edition of this classic work on optics; it was the most influential text on the subject for three hundred years. This is the first edition to be edited by Luca Gaurico (1476-1558), the expatriate Neapolitan scholar who also edited works by Archimedes and Ptolemy and taught at Bologna, Mantua, Ferrara, and Rome. "The work on which Pecham’s fame has chiefly rested is the Perspectiva communis, probably written between 1277 and 1279 during Pecham’s professorship at the papal curia. Book III was devoted to the phenomena of refraction, the rainbow, and the Milky Way. "The central feature of Pecham’s optical system and the dominant theme of book I of the Perspectiva communis is the theory of direct vision. Here, as elsewhere, Pecham endeavored to reconcile all the available authorities — Aristotle, Euclid, Augustine, al-Kindi, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Rushd, Grosseteste, and Bacon. "Pecham’s optical system included significantly more than a theory of direct vision. He briefly discussed the doctrine of species; treated at length the propagation of rays; and developed a theory to explain how solar radiation, when passing through noncircular apertures, gives rise to circular images. He expressed the full law of reflection and applied it to image formation by plane, spherical, cylindrical, and conical mirrors; in this analysis he revealed an implicit understanding of the nature of the focal point of a concave mirror. "Pecham’s success was greatest in the case of the Perspectiva communis. This text.went through twelve printed editions, including a translation into Italian, between 1482 and 1665. It was used and cited by many medieval and Renaissance natural philosophers, including Dominicus de Clavasio, Henry of Langenstein, Blasius of Parma, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Brudzewski, Francesco Maurolico, Giambattista della Porta, Girolamo Fabrici, Johannes Kepler, Willebord Snellius, and G.B. Riccioli. The Perspectiva communis was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject."–D.S.B., X, pp. 475-76. Peckham (ca. 1230-1292), took his degrees at Paris and Oxford and in 1279 was elected archbishop of Canterbury. The first edition of the text was published ca. 1482-83. A fine copy preserved in a black morocco box. ? Mortimer 367. Smith, History of Mathematics, II, p. 341–"The work that had the greatest influence upon the subject of perspective in the Middle Ages was the Perspective communis." REISCH, Gregor.
Margarita Philosophica. Totius Phiijae Ratinalis, Naturalis & Moralis principia dialogice duodecim libris complectes .
Freiburg: Johan Schott. [Apriles Anno Gratie], 1504. - 307 ff [of 330, lacking 23 leaves: rr-tt]. Signatures a-c in sixes (preceded by six preliminary leaves), d-pp in eights, qq in six, Quarto, rebound in full dark brown morocco, blindtooled to period, with gilt lettered morocco label on spine whith raised bands and blind tooled decorations, new endpapers. Titlepage with small repair from back and skillful infill in ink from front, n3 with skillful marginal repair, occasional light browning, a very nice copy. Illustrated with woodcuts, many full page as well as numerous ones in text, 2 folding plates. Map of the world and colophon in facsimile. Second edition. Leaf nn3 with lengthy old brown ink notation. This is the second edition, revised and enlarged by the author. The colophon (here present in facsimile) cautions the reader about an evidently unauthorized edition printed in the same year by GrŸninger. On the verso of the woodcut title are twenty-two lines of a verse headed "Suo Gregoriso Reisch gnerois Comitis de / Zolrn alumno: Adam Vuerherus Tema / rensis. Salutem. P. D." and below "Ex Heydelberga, iij. Klanu /arias. m. cccc. lxxxvi". This verse have led some bibliographers to the erroneous conclusion that the work was printed in Heidelberg in 1496. The volume was very widely read since its first publication in 1503 and is the first encyclopedia of liberal arts and science. It is divided into twelve books, edited by Gregor Reisch, a Carhusian monk and confessor of Emperor Maximilian I. The twelve books, or parts, deal with: anatomy of humans and of animals, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, metallurgy, geometry, music, philosophy, morals, and more, and are profusely illustrated with woodcuts. The illustrations are detailed and very well done; many are full page plates. The illustrations cover everything from human anatomy to comets and galaxies to relating the signs of the planters to the human body to a number of pages with music notations and words to the music to childbirth, and mining. For the next 100 years of this period of the Renaissance the book was used in universities and all institutions of learning. [Sabin 69124. See J. Alessio Piemontese.
DE' SECRETI DEL R.D.ALESSIO PIEMONTESE. Parti quattro, nuovamente ristampati. In Venetia, appresso Angelo Bodio, 1674.
      - Cm.15,9x10,4. Pg.554,(38). Legatura moderna in piena pergamena rigida. Cartigli e capilettera incisi. DSB, Vol. XV, "a wide range of empirically discovered recipes, including medicinal compounds, cosmetic preparations, and formulas for the chemical technology of pigments and dyes, metallurgy, and jewellery". ARISTOTELES.
Commentaria...Egidii Romani in libros de generatione & corruptione Aristotelis cum textu intercluso singulis locis. Questiones...super primo libro de generatione nunc quidem primum in publicum prodeuntes. Questiones...Doctoris Marsilii Inguem in prefatos libros de generatione...Item questiones...Magistri Alberti de saxonia in eosdem libros de gene. ultra nusq impresse.
Woodcut initials & woodcut publisher's device at end. Two columns, Gothic type. 155, [1] leaves. Folio, attractive antique vellum-backed wooden boards (lower outer blank corners of a number of leaves repaired, occasional staining). [Venice: B. Locatellus for O. Scotus, 6 Sept. 1504]. An important early edition of Aristotle's De Generatione et Corruptione; this is, I believe, the first to contain the three additional commentaries of Egidio Colonna (d. Moreover, he did so in a style distinctive enough to place him in the first rank of those thinkers who have made a positive contribution to the scientific thought of their time (see Maier, Die Vorläufer Galileis, p. 2)... "[His commentary on] the De generatione et corruptione...became [a] classic, and was often utilized by such fourteenth-century physicists as Buridan and Marsilius of Inghen, who considered Giles the communis expositor of the De generatione."D.S.B., V, pp. 402-03. Marsilius was a high official at the Universities of Paris and Heidelberg and his "chief contributions to science lay in the field of physics...His work places him among the Parisian masters who may be considered to be the precursors of Leonardo and Galileo and the formers of the new physics of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries."D.S.B., IX, p. 136. Albert of Saxony was a prominent teacher on the faculty of arts at Paris. "Albert's significance in the history of science is primarily that of a transmitter and an intelligent compiler of scientific ideas directly drawn from the works of Buridan, Thomas Bradwardine, William of Ockham, Burley, Oresme, and other writers in the medieval scientific tradition."D.S.B., I, p. 94. Very good copy. No copy in N.U.C., OCLC, and RLIN. Adams A-1792(false collation).

MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI SANT'ANDREA IN ARGINE 1480 CIRCA - BOLOGNA 1534
Bibliografia: Bartsch 98; Passavant 42; Delaborde 89; Bologna e lUmanesimo 12." Engraving, 1504/5 approx., signed on plate on lower centre. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentified watermark, trimmed to the border line, small repairs perfectly executed on upper centre and near the signature, in general in very good condition. Recent studies have confirmed that Raimondi is the author of this work, although it was inspired by the homonymous painting by Francia with some references to Mantegna. Hind underlines that the landscape is clearly inspired by Duerers work, which Raimondi might have known through Sea Monster and Hercules at the Crossroads. Some stylistic elements of the niello help us to date the print at the beginning of XVI century. The signature Mar. Ant. is a real, unique innovation in Raimondis graphic production. Extremely rare. 300 220

He recieved ' his medical degree from the University of Paris in 1542, but had ' apparently been at work on this anatomical magnum opus for many ' years, as some of the plates are dated 1530 and 1531. This ' magnificent folio volume is one of the finest of all anatomical ' treaties. Certainly it was the finest printed in France in its ' century, and the sixty-two full-page woodcuts, artistically ' presenting the anatomical subjects in special poses before unusal ' background seetings, are unusually sumptuous and ' imaginative". "Had 'DE DISSECTIONE... been published in 1539, ' there is no question that it would have stolen much of the ' thunder from Vesaliu's Fabricia: it would have been the first ' work to show detailed illustrations of dissection in serial ' progression, the first to discuss and illustrate the total human ' body, the first to publish instruction to mount a skeleton, and ' the first to the anatomical figures in a fully developed ' panoramic landscape...." Despite its tardy appearance, however, ' DE DISSECTIONE..... was able to make numerous original contributions ' to anatomy, including the first illustrations of the whole ' external venous and nervous system, and the descriptions of the ' morphology and purpose of the "feeding holes" of bones, the ' tripartate composition of the sternum, the valvulae in the ' hepatic veins and the srotal septum. In addition, the work's ' eight dissection of the brain give more anatomical detail that ' had previously appeared."       - Cm.15,9x10,4. Pg.554,(38). Legatura moderna in piena pergamena rigida. Cartigli e capilettera incisi. PECKHAM, John.
Perspective communis.
Riccioli...The Perspectiva communis was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject."D.S.B., X, pp. 475-76. Peckham (ca. 1230-1292), took his degrees at Paris and Oxford and in 1279 was elected archbishop of Canterbury. The first edition of the text was published ca. 1482-83. Very good copy preserved in a red morocco-backed box. This edition is very rare. Smith, History of Mathematics, II, p. 341"The work that had the greatest influence upon the subject of perspective in the Middle Ages was the Perspective communis."

T.p. in red and black, decorated initials. Hence, scholars generally accept them as authentic."       CALIGULA DI BASALER, 1504. Signed. Dedica a Lucrezia Bentivoglia Estense. Cc. 166 nn. Testo in carattere romano, 25 linee titolo in gotico. Dedica a Lucrezia Bentivoglia Estense.
