PAPALISTA.
Profetie di diverse persone Sante raccolte insieme, dove con difficolta' si considera e si antivede la vita delli Pontifici, et il successo del mondo, incomminciando a' la scisma di tre Papi, chi regno' lanno MCCCC sino al Papa Angelico. Manoscritto cartaceo, meta' XVII secolo, in-folio (mm 417x267) su carta con disegni a penna ed acquerello color seppia, ff. 38 n.n. (primo e ultimi 3 ff. bianchi), legatura coeva in cartone rustico. Manoscritto chiaramente vergato, databile alla meta' del XVII secolo; notevole per il grande formato e per la qualita' dei disegni, estremamente fedeli alla tradizione iconografica dellopera. Testo in latino e italiano; riporta 29 profezie su 30 poiche' lultima non e' mai stata disegnata e trascritta a causa di un errore o di una mancanza nellantigrafo; il codice deve quindi considerarsi comunque assolutamente completo. Particolarmente dettagliata e' la parte testuale relativa alla profezia generalmente ascritta a Pio V (1504-1572), autore di un duro rafforzamento dellinquisizione e di una persecuzione degli eretici. Il manoscritto riporta con il curioso titolo Papalista (lista dei papi) le profezie dellabate di origine cosentina (1130-1201), formatosi inizialmente in ambito cistercense. Le sue letture dei Vangeli e la delirante interpretazione dellApocalisse, crearono non pochi turbamenti nelle alte sfere ecclesiastiche, preoccupate per le sue apocalittiche visioni che fantasticavano sulla sorte degli ultimi Papi sino al Papa Angelico, previsto per il 1260 (numero piu' volte citato nellApocalisse). Questi era annunciato come ultimo rappresentante prima dellavvento di un periodo di concordia e di crollo delle gerarchie. Ancorche' dichiarato eretico, le sue opere esercitarono sempre una profonda attrazione anche per eminenti figure di teologi devoti, tra i quali si ricordano Guglielmo di Ockam e Ubertino da Casale. Le edizioni a stampa delle profezie datano sin dal 1517 e alcune di esse, profusamente illustrate, esercitarono un richiamo attrattivo non indifferente. Il manoscritto, ascrivibile ad un generico ambito italiano, e' databile per ragioni paleografiche e stilistiche alla meta' del XVII secolo. Ottimo esemplare. Titel fehlt (?), 83ungezählte Blätter; (II:) Ttlbl., 134gezählte Blätter; III:) 109, (2) gezählte Blätter, teilweise unteres Papierteil verstärkt. 3 Teile in einem zeitgenössischen Holzdeckelband mit blindgeprägtem Schweinslederband auf vier Bünde geheftet mit zwei (fehlenden) Schließen. Sehr schöne Postinkunabel, Initialen mit Rot und Blau ausgemalt. . Petrus Thmais aus Ravenna verließ Greifswald im Frühjahr 1503. Herzog Bogislaw X. übregab ihm 100 Dukaten und schenkte ihm ein Pferd, auch wurde ihm ein Empfehlungsschreiben überreicht für die Sicherheit unterwegs. Als Kurfürst Friedrich von Sachsen von der Reise des berühmten Italieners vernahm, sandte er ihm einen Boten entgegen mit der Bitte, in Wittenberg Station zu machen und dort Vorlesungen abzuhalten. Am 3. Mai 1503 hielt Petrus Ravenna eine Vorlesung mit dem Thema: Über die Gewalt des römischen papstes und des Kaisers. Den Bitten des Fürsten folgend blieb Petrus Ravenna in Wittenbuerg und hielt Vorlesungen. Er lehrte auf der Grundlage seines eigenen Compendium iuris canonici, das parallel in Wittenberg erschien. Im Sommersemester kam die Pest nach Wittenberg und Petrus Ravenna verließ Wittenberg. Danach ging er nach Köln, am 3. Dezember 1506 wurde er an der Universität immatrikuliert. Wiederum bestritt er Vorlsungen auf der Grundlage seines Compendium. Er diktierte und daran schlossen sich Erläuterungen und einige Zusätze an. Petrus Ravenna galt schon in Italien als Wunder an Gedächtnisleistung. Im Alter von 20 Jahren soll er als Student in Padua Probe seiner Gelehrsamkeit negboten habe, er habe die ganze Justinianische Gesetzgebung einschlißelich der Glosse Wort für Wort im Kopf: also Institutionen, Pandekten, Codex und Novellen. Die Probe soll in Anwesenheit von Alexander Tartagnus stattgefunden haben, der sprachlos vor Staunen gewesen sein soll. 1497 hat Herzog Bogislaw X., der auf Rückreise vom Heiligen Grab gewesen war, Petrus Ravenna überredet, mit ihm in den Norden an die Universität Greifswald zu reisen, um der jungen Universität Glanz zu verleihen. Im Winter 1497 verließ er Italien. In Greifswald dozierte er zusammen mit seinem Sohne Vicentius 5 Jahre lang. Am 25. Die eiserne Hand des tapfern deutschen Ritters Götz von Berlichingen wie selbige noch bei seiner Familie in Franken aufbewahrt wird, sowohl von Außen als von Innen dargestellt, nebst der Erklärung ihres für jene Zeiten von fast dreihundert Jahren sehr merkwürdigen Mechanismus; ferner einer kurzen Lebensgeschichte des Ritters besonders in Bezug auf die Hand... Den in den Jahren 1814 und 1815 zum Friedens-Congreß in Wien versammelten gekrönten Befreiern Europen's ehrerbietig zugeeignet. Mit gest. Porträt von E. Henne, gest. Ansicht der Burg von Jaxthausen von Carl Gr. Brühl sowie 2 doppelblattgr. (1 teilkolor.) Aquatintaradierungen von Chr. von Mechel. Berlin, gedruckt bei Georg Decker, 1815. . Einzige Ausgabe dieses interessanten mechanisch-orthopädischen Werkes. - In der Schlacht bei Landshut im Bayerischen Krieg hatte Götz von Berlichingen 1504 seine rechte Hand verloren. Er ersann sich jedoch einen Mechanismus, mit dem er diesen Verlust zumindest teilweise wieder ausgleichen konnte. Er ließ sich vom Waffenschmied in Olnhausen eine eiserne Hand bauen, deren Finger über Zahnräder u. Achsen einzeln beweglich waren u. mit Hilfe der gesunden Hand verstellt werden konnten. Für die damalige Zeit war das ein großer Fortschritt. Die Hand gilt deshalb zu recht als das berühmteste frühe Beispiel einer funktionsfähigen Prothese. Der Basler Kupferstecher Chr. von Mechel erhielt den Auftrag die Hand zu zeichnen u. stellt auf seinen beiden Aquatinten die Hand im Maßstab 1:1 dar. QUATTRO XILOGRAFIE A PIENA PAGINA E VENTIDUE NEL TESTO, NUMEROSE RUBRICATURE IN ROSSO. RARA SECONDA EDIZIONE della Bibbia di Amerbach, Froben e Petri con il commento dal cardinale francese Hugues de Saint Cher, in un affascinante made up set completo in tutti i suoi volumi. Questa monumentale impresa, fu iniziata dai tre più grandi stampatori tedeschi del tempo, che la impressero per la prima volta tra il 1498-1502, ristampandola poi immediatamente grazie all'enorme successo ottenuto. Alcuni restauri ai frontespizi con controfondatura del terzo e del quinto; fettucce di rinforzo al margine esterno di alcune carte; trascurabili forellini di tarlo che sfiorano qualche lettera e leggere gore, ma in generale set molto fresco e ben conservato, impresso su carta forte. Jahrhunderts bei Simon Bening in Auftrag. Der Flame Bening (um 1483-1561) war der herausragendste Miniaturist seiner Zeit. Der portugiesische Diplomat und Humanist Damiao de Goes bezeichnete ihn um 1530 als den besten Künstler der Buchmalerei. Zu Benings berühmtesten Kunden zählten Kaiser Karl V. und Ferdinand, Infant von Portugal. In Benings Werkstatt in Brügge entstand die gewünschte Handschrift, ein Rosenkranz, dessen 16 farbenprächtige Miniaturen die zugehörigen, in altspanischer Sprache verfassten Gebete illustrieren. Die einprägsamen, durch 14 mit Gold und Silber illuminierte Initialen verzierten Texte entsprechen den freudenreichen, schmerzvollen und glorreichen Geheimnissen aus dem Leiden Christi und dem Leben der Jungfrau Maria. Der Gebrauch des Rosenkranzes, einer am Vorbild der 150 biblischen Psalmen orientierten marianischen Gebetsform, war nach dessen Vereinfachung, d.h. einer Reduzierung auf zuletzt 15 Texte im Volk sehr beliebt und gerade im katholischen Spanien des 16. Die hier vorliegende Post-Inkunabel beinhaltet eine reich illustrierte Offenbarung, die fälschlicherweise dem Heiligen Methodius zugeschrieben wurde. Unter dem Titel "Revelationes divinae" bekannt geworden und mit einem Kommentar des Geistlichen Wolfgang Aytinger versehen, erschien sie erstmals im Jahre 1498. Beide Werke sind mit insgesamt 61 eindrucksvollen Holzschnitten so reich illustriert, dass auf fast jeder Seite Holzschnitte zu finden sind, welche Szenen aus der Weltgeschichte und der nahe geglaubten Apokalypse zeigen. Einer der Schnitte in der Offenbarung des Pseudo-Methodius zeigt einen prachtvoll gekleideten Herrscher, der von dem, am Kreuz hängenden Christus Krone und Reichsapfel als Symbol der geistlichen und weltlichen Macht überreicht bekommt. Ein anderer Schnitt zeigt Christus, auf dem Reichsapfel sitzend, beim Abhalten des jüngsten Gerichtes. Im Traktat von Wolfgang Aytinger finden sich weitere, sehr eindrucksvolle und anschauliche Abbildungen. So sind auf einem der Schnitte zwei Männer zu sehen, die - als Symbol für eine drohende Kirchenspaltung - ein Kirchengebäude zersägen. Auf einer weiteren Abbildung ist die "Hure Babylon" zusammen mit der siebenköpfigen Bestie abgebildet. Auf dem Saum ihrer Kleidung steht die Inschrift "got ist nit got". Das Buch besitzt einen zeitlos schönen Ganzpergamenteinband aus jüngerer Zeit. [Zustand des Einbandes: 1- /Zustand des Papiers 2- / Sonstige Anmerkungen: Der Einband ist sehr leicht beschmutzt und an den Ecken geringfügig bestoßen, ansonsten aber in einem einwandfreien Zustand. Der Buchblock ist auf einer Seite leicht schief beschnitten. Das Papier ist etwas wasser- und fingerfleckig. Der Band weist einen einzelnen Wurmgang auf etwa 2/3 der Seiten auf. Eine einzelne Seite besitzt im unteren Randbereich eine kleinere Fehlstelle (kein Text- oder Bildverlust). Einige Marginalien in alter Hand geben Auskunft über die Benutzung des Bandes in früheren Tagen. Da das Werk außerdem vollständig vorliegt befindet es sich alles in allem in einem guten Zustand.] Die "Revelationes divinae" wurden im 7. Jahrhundert von einem unbekannten syrischen Mönch als Reaktion auf die islamische Expansion verfasst und dem heiligen Methodios von Olympos (gest. um 311) zugeschrieben. Der Text fand eine schnelle Verbreitung und wurde innerhalb kurzer Zeit sowohl ins Griechische als auch ins Lateinische übertragen. Diese Beliebtheit lässt sich vor allem darauf zurückführen, dass der falsche Methodius den bedrängten Christen einen ersehnten Endsieg über die Araber vorhersagte, der von einem christlichen Kaiser errungen werden sollte. Im Jahre 1498 nahm sich der Humanist und Verfasser des "Narrenschiffes", Sebastian Brant (1457 - 1521), des Werkes an und veröffentlichte eine von ihm editierte und reich bebilderte Version der "Revelationes divinae". Das Werk war so erfolgreich, dass bereits 1504 eine zweite und 1510 eine dritte Auflage veröffentlicht wurden, welche inhaltlich weitgehend mit der ersten identisch waren. Das hier vorliegende Exemplar stammt aus der zweiten Ausgabe des Jahres 1504. Brant gelang es mit Hilfe zahlreicher Randglossen, einer durchdachten Gestaltung der Bilder sowie durch Hinzufügung von Aytingers Traktat dem Werk einen aktuellen Bezug zu geben. Für Aytinger war mit der Eroberung Konstantinopels durch die Osmanen im Jahre 1453 der Beginn der bei Pseudo-Methodius geschilderten Krise gekommen, die nach einer Kirchenreform und dem Sieg der Christen über die Osmanen bereits im Jahre 1509 mit der Apokalypse enden sollte. Bei dem hier vorliegenden Werk handelt es sich also um eine sehr reich bebilderte Postinkunabel, die vom berühmten Humanisten Sebastian Brant herausgegeben und bearbeitet wurde. Mit prachtvoller Titel bordüre aus der venezianischen Mallermi-Bibel 1493 und großem Titelholzschnitt (Soardis empfängt das Breve aus der Hand von Papst Julius II, damit ist dies eines der frühesten Drucker-Portraits). 1 große figürliche Initiale und 1 Holzschnitt-Druckermarke in Schwarz. - Halblederholzdeckelband mit Rollenstempelblindprägung (Rücken im Stil der Zeit erneuert). Alter Besitzvermerk auf dem Titel und 1 Bl. gelöscht, wenige Anmerkungen von alter Hand, nur vereinzelt leicht fleckig. Außenschnitt mit handschriftlichem Titel, Innendeckel mit Stempel, 3 kleine ausgebesserte Randeinrisse, 1 Seite mit Druckfarbenfleck, die letzten 20 Blätter mit kleinen Wurmlöchern. Ein schönes Exemplar der seltenen Ausgabe! Soardi bereicherte die von ihm gedruckten Bücher mit lateinischen Gedichten aus seiner Feder. Zwei dieser Gedichte finden sich auf dem Titel, eines am Ende der Lebensbeschreibung des Hl. Gregorius, (die möglicherweise von Lazarro zusammengestellt wurde). Augsburg, Erhard Ratdolt, 1504. Gr. 8°; 30 cm hoch, 21 cm tief. 264 Bll. (von 274). ??, ?, a-p8, q6, [r-s]8, A-I8; A-D8, E °, [F]4. Schweinsledereinband. Guter Zustand. (VD 16 ZV 11021; Proctor 10642) Prachtvoller blindgeprägter Schweinsledereinband über Holzdeckeln aus dem späteren 16. Jahrhundert mit zwei Messingschließen. Dies ist eines der ersten Konstanzer Messbücher, die von Ratdolt gedruckt wurden. Die Ausgabe wurde von Hugo von Hohenlandenberg in Auftrag gegeben. Sein Auftragsbrief für diese erste Auflage, der dem weiteren Text vorangeht, ist auf den 8. Mai 1504 datiert, entsprechend dem Datum auf Ratdolts Kolophon. Insgesamt gab es fünf Ausgaben der "Missale" bei Ratdolt, die allesamt sehr selten sind. Von der vorliegenden Auflage gibt es nur ca. 15 Kopien. Die aufwändige Blindprägung des Schweinsleders zeigt florale Muster im äußeren Rahmen. Die inneren zwei Rahmen sind mit Figuren von Heiligen und biblischen Szenen, darunter eine Kreuzigung, geprägt. Der innerste Rahmen enthält wiederum florale Verzierungen. Das ganzseitige, farbige Holzschnitt-Frontispiz zeigt die Bistumsheiligen Konrad und Pelagius, wie sie die erhöht auf einem Podest stehende Mutter Gottes mit dem Kinde flankieren. Vor dem Podest lehnt das Wappen Hugos von Landenberg, zusammen mit Bischofsmütze und -stab. Die Figurengruppe steht unter einem gotischen Bogen. Auf den Bogenstreben liegen links und rechts zwei nackte Figuren, die Adam und Eva darstellen. Im Bogenfeld befindet sich die Jahresangabe 1504. Der Schnitt ist mit dem Monogramm des Augsburger Malers Jörg Breu signiert. Halbseitiger Holzschnitt eines Sonnenkalenders. Der zweispaltige Text ist in Rot und Schwarz gedruckt und enthält mehrere große, zum Teil kolorierte Holzschnitt-Initialen sowie zahlreiche kleinere lombardische, mit perlenförmigen Verzierungen versehene, rote Initialen. In der Mitte des Buches sind 9 Blätter mit Noten und Gesängen. [Zustand des Einbandes: 2 / Zustand des Papiers: 2- / Sonstige Anmerkungen: Das Schweinsleder des Einbands wurde mit kleinen Nägeln an den Holzdeckeln befestigt. Handschriftliche Titelangabe am oberen Kapital. Das Leder ist berieben und bestoßen, aber durch die Prägung noch wunderschön anzusehen. Ein Teil der oberen Schließe fehlt. Dem Text fehlen 8 Blätter. Die letzten Seiten sind sehr abgenutzt und repariert. Die unteren Teile der Blätter XXXVIII - XL fehlten, wurden aber ersetzt und der Text per Hand nachgetragen. Die Blätter A1 und H8 sind etwas lose. Das Papier hat einige Wasserflecken. Handschriftliche Marginalien und Besitzvermerk von Kaplan Bock, dem Sponsor dieser Ausgabe: "Reverendissimi domini hugonis episcopi constantinensis capellanus Jeorius Bock proprium manus scriptura subscriptus". Späteres (17. Jahrhundert) Manuskript einer Liturgie, die bei der Aussegnung und Reinigung von Frauen nach deren Niederkunft genutzt wurde, auf fliegendem Vorsatz. Bibliotheksstempel der Fürstenbergischen Bibliothek Donaueschingen.] Hugo von Hohenlandenberg (Bischof, * 1457 Schloß Hegi bei Winterthur, gest. 7.1.1532 in Meersburg) stammte aus dem Ministerialgeschlecht Landenberg und war 1484 zunächst Probst in Erfurt. Er wurde am 18.12.1496 zum Bischof geweiht. Durch die Auseinandersetzungen mit Zwingli kam der Bischof zunehmend in Schwierigkeiten. Als Zwingli am 2.7. 1522 sein schriftlich abgefaßtes Postulat zur Freigabe der Priesterehe und der freien, schriftgemäßen Predigt dem Bischof vorlegte, zeigte dieser sich jeder Reform abgeneigt. Bei der Bekämpfung der schriftgemäßen Predigt jedoch hatte der Bischof nicht genügend Rückendeckung von seiten seines Kapitels, so daß die Neugläubigen zunehmend an Einfluß gewannen. Die Bischöfe von Lausanne, Basel und Konstanz beschlossen zwar 1524 das sogenannte "eidgenössische Glaubenskonkordat", ein großangelegtes Programm zur Klärung der Reformfrage, jedoch distanzierte Hohenlandenberg sich schon bald davon, als ihm klar wurde, daß die zwischen altem und neuem Glauben schwankende Stadt Konstanz sich nicht von der kirchlichen Obrigkeit zur Umkehr b [Bookseller: Antiquarischer Lexikonhandel]

2 works in one volume. Folio. ff. cclv, (xxviii); (xvi) clv. Black letter in two sizes, extensive red, text in double column, notes surrounding. Five woodcut illustrations, four almost full-page on titles and part titles, two of St George slaying the dragon with onlookers, one Hopyl's device (Silvestre 1066) incorporating title within ovals flanked by eagles, and one of a king enthroned surrounded by members of his court, woodcut initials. Clean tears to M8 and A3, touching text but without loss, light dampstain to outer margin of a few gatherings at beginning of second sometimes touching text, small marginal dampstains to upper edge at end, final leaf with three small holes to blank outer margin, lacking final blank, one or two inkspots. A very good, clean, wide copy, with attractive woodcuts and two-colour printing, in early 17th-century English speckled sheep, a.e.r. Joints cracked, and split at head and foot, one corner slightly defective, small areas of rubbing on lower cover. Richard Rudd's ms. ex-libris dated 1557 in blank upper portion of title, partially visible ms. ex dono adjoining, early scholarly marginalia in more than one 16thC hand intermittently throughout text, extensive scholarly notes and on verso of last, 19th-century armorial bookplate on upper pastedown of the Earls of Macclesfield, their blindstamp to title and subsequent two leaves. "The 'Provinciale' is a digest in five books of the synodal constitutions of the province of Canterbury from the time of Stephen Langton to that of Henry Chichele, accompanied by an explanatory gloss in unusually good Latin, and is the principal authority for English canon law" (DNB). Lyndwood's work collects the most important ecclesiastical legislation from the province of Canterbury between 1222 up to the time of its writing. It is also supplied with Lyndwood's extensive marginal gloss and an authoritative index. It was completed in 1433, and was first published in Oxford c. 1470-80; it was also printed at Westminster in 1496 with Caxton's cipher and de Worde's colophon. That edition marked the first appearance of John Acton's commentary on the ecclesiastical 'constitutions' of Otho and Ottobone, the papal legates in England in the 14th century, followed by a collection of unabridged provincial statutes of Canterbury; the second work here, which is frequently (and erroneously) attributed to Lyndwood.
