EURIPIDES.
Tragoediae.
Venice; Aldus, 1503. 2 volumes 8vo. [268]; [189] unnumbered ff. Greek letter, Aldine dolphin device to versos of last, frequent Latin and Greek marginalia in several contemporary hands, leaves numbered at head, both occasionally cropped. A fine, clean copy in striking late 18th-C red morocco gilt with border of scrolling acanthus leaves and corner ornaments, inner dentelles gilt, spines richly gilt, green and navy morocco lettering pieces. 19th C Comb-patterned marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Armorial bookplates of the library of the Earl of Macclesfield on front pastedown, Shirburn castle blindstamps to first few ll. EDITIO PRINCEPS of eighteen Euripidean plays (in spite of the t-p, which mentions only 17), including 'Rhesus,' sometimes attributed to Sophocles, including in a ms note at the start of vol. 2, but more often considered as being a later, spurious, addition to the corpus. All the tragedies with the exception of 'Electra' are present, as well as the satyr play 'Cyclops.' All but four of the plays are here published for the first time. "It would seem from the preface that only 1000 copies were printed" (Dibdin), making it a set of particular rarity as well as beauty. The marginalia offer alternative readings, cross-references to other authors and translations of complex phrases. The text of the first volume is preceded by a sheet of manuscript with notes in Latin, Italian and Greek with relevant page numbers, in the same hand as did the numbering. The attractive bindings of this set date from the late 18th-C Classical revival, due to the rigid geometry of the designs on the spine, and the acanthus roll. BM STC It. 239. Dibdin I 524 "frequently found in an imperfect or indifferent condition". Adams E 1030. Renouard 43/10 "première et rare édition d'Euripide".

Maurice Brock
Bronzino
Flammarion-Pere Castor. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) was one of the leading representatives of Florentine mannerist painting. In this important new study, the eminent French art historian Maurice Brock provides a detailed analysis of this painter's remarkable oeuvre, taking into account the latest developments in scholarship and drawing on information about the artist's life that has recently come to light. Eschewing a chronological approach, the author examines the paintings according to genre, focusing above all on Bronzino's portraits and religiouslittle-known paintings, and in particular on the ltitle-known altarpieces and private devotional pictures. For Bronzino, art was the imitation of art, not the faithful imitation of nature. This book explains how he borrowed from other art forms, notable sculpture, and it looks at the relationship between the artist's paintings ISBN10: 2080108778.

Rabanus Maurus, Archbishop of Mainz
Magnencij Rabani Mauri De Laudibus sancte Crucis opus. Erudicione versu prosaque mirificum
[colophon: Phor!heim:: Thomas Anshelm,, 1503].. Recent ebony-brown calf old style: Round spine with raised bands, accented in gilt and with blind-tooled devices (no labels) in compartments; single blind rules extending onto covers from each band to terminate in trefoils, and covers framed in blind double fillets. Lower blank half of title-leaf excised and replaced with old paper; some other old tears sometime repaired without loss. First seven leaves with small, slightly meandered wormhole, touching some letters; different worm active on folios LIII to LIX touching four letters total; some leaves trimmed close to woodcut borders, touching six letters. Some dust-soiling and occasional staining; upper outer corner bumped in midsection; without the final blank leaf (only). = A very handsome production and a fascinating book.. Folio. [10], LIX, [1], XIIII, [1] ff., lacking final blank. . Modernly known as In honorem sanctae crucis, this work on the holy cross by Rabanus Maurus (a.k.a. Hrabanus Maurus) was completed by 814 and through the manuscript and early printing era it was known under the title of De Laudibus sancte Crucis. The New Westminster Dictionary of Church History (p. 320) says that "[w]ith this work Hrabanus paved the way to fill the theoretical gap left open by the previous debates in the East and West about the legitimacy of visual images."#11; And visual this work certainly is: It contains 30 carmina figurata (2 unnumbered and 28 numbered) glorifying the holy cross and two xylographic illustrations. The cataloguer at the Pierpont Morgan Library writes that the "Illustrations (pattern or figure poems) are in red and black, sometimes complete woodcuts, sometimes woodcut with letterpress. Various poetic texts can be derived from the resulting configurations. Explanatory text and a transcript of the poem complements each ill[ustration]." In other words, the archbishop's work ranks among the earliest examples of printed concrete poetry. And, because his poems are encrypted in a grid of 36 lines each containing 36 letters, this also is an early work in the field of cryptology. #11; This 1503 printing is the editio princeps and was edited by Jakob Wimpheling. It clearly was much anticipated in the Humanist community for it sports preliminary matter by Reuchlin, Sebastian Brandt, Joannes Gallinarius, and Georgius Symler. The text is printed in roman type in black and red throughout, with the exception of the title which is in gothic. There are two large woodcuts (16 x 12.5 cm; 6.25" x 5") of Rabanus in audience with and kneeling before the pope; in the second one he is presenting the pope with a book, and the pope has cats sitting at his shoulders on the papal throne.#11; Provenance: 16th-century ownership note of Sebastian de Sanctus on title-page; in the 20th century owned by Louis Karpinski, the famous mathematician; sold with the rest of his collection of 16th-century books to Colgate Rochester Divinity School; deaccessioned in 2004.

Cordoba, Alonso de
Tabule astronomice Elisabeth Regine (Isabel de Castilla)
Venice, Petrus Liechtensteyn Coloniensis. 1503 (or 1517) (Palau 61824; Adams C 2622; Honeyman 760).Small in quarto, old vellum. 51 of 52 leaves (B8, authentic blank; lacking last leave *e4, with colophon). Added are 9 leaves in contemporary manuscript. Of the 9 additional leaves 8 are tables and one is a horoscope dated: calculata anno 1553, aprilis 6 for Prince Henry (Henrici dauphini) born March 31 1518 between 7 and 8 hours. This Prince Henry, son of King Francois I, became King Henri II of France (1547-1559), married Catharina de Medici who gave birth to Francois II; Charles IX and Henri III.*Alfonso’s (Alfonso el Sabios‘) astronomical tables, as adapted by Alonso de Cordoba. The Alfonsin tables, tables of Toledo, were based on development of Arabic astronomy which in turn was based on Greek classical (for example Ptolomys Amalgesta) and Hindu knowledge. Concrete measurements with Toledo at the zero prime meridian started in 1061. The name of Azarquiel is remembered as its main author. We do not know how these measurements were documented. The first written elaboration of the Alfonsin Tables is carried out by two Jewish astronomers: Jehuda ben Mose and Isaac ben Sid between 1263 and 1272. The Alfonsin Tables did not stand alone: in various places in Western Europe similar tables were developed and adapted. The one outstanding characteristic of the Alfonsin tables is that the instrument translates calculations, based on movements of the sun (Christian) to calculations movements of the moon (Islamic) (Fernandez, Museo Naval. 2006). The Alfonsin tables were used all over Europe and found in the late XIII century in Florence, in 1320 in Paris etc. In those cases the prime meridian was adapted to the city of its use, e.a Florence or Paris. The adaptions of Johannes de Saxonia in Paris in 1327 were selected by Radtholt for the first printed edition (Venice 1483). Were the Alphonsin tables (based on the Paris adaptations) were used for two centuries all over Europe, they played a marginal role in Spain itself, were astronomy and science went lost. Only the arrival of Nicholaus Polonius in Salamanca in 1460 revived this interest and led to Alfonsin tables, adapted on a prime meridian through Salamanca: Tabulae probatae. The printed versions of the Alfonsin tables continued in Venice and elsewhere. In the meantime Alonso de Cordoba adapted the Alfonsin tables, using Sevilla as prime meridian and using as first year the year of the coronation of Isabel la Catolica in Spain in 1474. That is our copy. Alonso de Cordoba was born in Sevilla c 1450 and studied medicine. He was astronomer to the King of Portugal and published various books with astronomical tables and an almanach.#[604]

Margarita Philosophica
      - Freiburg, Schott, 1503 (Graesse 6 pp 73; Brunet 3441). In quarto, rebound in contemporary blindtooled calf. 294 (of 296) leaves. Engraved title page; last leave authentic blank. 15 full page woodcut engravings, numerous engravings in the text. Mildly washed and de-acified copy. Still with traces of water and other stains throughout. Lacks two leaves (E4 and E5, on changing metals chapter XXV and herbs chapter XXVI). *The Margarita Philosophica is an overview of the liberal arts (science) at the break of the Renaissance, here about 1490. The original text was finished in 1496 and where all other bibliographies give 1503 as the editio princeps, Graesse mentions an edition without date or place, that he dates 1496 and places in Heidelberg. Panzer and Hain suggest this edition with a date of 1496 is the same one as this 1503 edition. The Margarita stands in line with earlier encyclopedias like the Ethymologia by Isodorus Hispalensis (VII century, includes an OT worldmap, first printed in 1473) Jacobus Magnus’ Sophologium (early XV century, first printed around 1470, and Bartolomeus Anglicus’ De proprietatibus rerum (1470). The twelve sciences described are:Trivium: (p1) Grammatica (latina); (p121) dialectica principia; (p229) retorica principia. Quadrivium: (p267) Aritmica; (p 332) Musica; (p401) Geometria; (p 512) Astronomia. Naturale: (713) naturalis philosophiae; (763) naturalium rerum; (p 834) animae vegetativae; (p 900) animae rationalis. Morale: (p1003) moralis philosophia. Most fields of sciences are preceded by a full page, metaphorical woodcut, showing and representing the field of science to be discussed. Gregor Reisch (1467-1525) was professor at Heidelberg University, where he also taught Waldseemuller. He is part of a circle of scientists/publishers, that include Walter Ludd; Ringmann, professor of cosmology in Basel, Johann Gruninger in Strassburg (printer), Schott and Amerbach. Between them information flowed freely. Partly under the maecenatism of Rene II, Duke of Lorraine, the Cosmografia Introductio was published (1507); wall map of the world naming America (1507); gores of a globe showing & naming America (1507) and the Carta Marina (1516).#[603]

Flavio Biondo (1392 - 1463) was an important Italian Renaissance humanist and historian reputed to have coined the term "medio evo" (middle ages) and is known as one of the first archaeologists. Born in Forlì, Flavio was well schooled studying under Ballistario of Cremona. During a brief stay in Milan, he discovered and transcribed the unique manuscript of Cicero's dialogue Brutus. He moved to Rome in 1433 where he began his writing career; he was appointed secretary to the Cancelleria under Eugene IV in 1444 and accompanied Eugene in his exile. After his patron's death, Flavio was employed by his papal successors, Nicholas V, Callixtus III and the great humanist Pius II. He published three encyclopedic works that were systematic and documented guides to the ruins and topography of ancient Rome. At the time the ruins of ancient Rome were overgrown and unexplored. His first work was De Roma instaurata (1444-1446), a reconstruction of ancient Roman topography. It was and remains a highly influential humanist vision of restoring Rome to its previous heights of grandeur by recreating what Rome used to look like based on the ruins which remained. The second was the highly popular De Roma triumphante (1459) about pagan Rome as a model for contemporary governmental and military reforms. The book was highly influential in reviving Roman patriotism and respect for ancient Rome, while presenting the papacy as a continuation of the Roman Empire. De Italia illustrata (1474) is a geography, based on the author's personal travels, and history of eighteen Italian provinces. Images sent on request. Images sent on request.

EURIPIDES.
Tragoediae.
      - Venice; Aldus, 1503. 2 volumes 8vo.

      - Venezia, Bernardo Giunti, 1582In 8° (15 x 10). Cc. 48. Old manuscript inscription on title (effaced); title-page partially backed. A nice and fresh copy in Eighteenth vellum backed-boards, morocco lettering piece on spine, red edges.

BOCCACCIO GIOVANNI
(AMETO). COMEDIE DEL EXCELENTISSIMO POETA MISER JOHANNI BOCCATIO DA CERTALDO. (IN FINE:) VENETIIS, PER GEORGIUM DE RUSCONIBUS MEDIOLANENSEM, 19 DIC. 1503,
in-folio, ff. (75, mancando l'ult. b.; segn. A-H8, I4, K8), leg. Tit. in car. semigotico, testo in car. rom., iniz. silogr., marca tip. in fine. Bompiani, Opere I, p. 110). Zambrini col. 140-1. Gamba 200, note. STC 107. Adams B-2129.

Pius II [Piccolomini, Aeneas Silvius]
Historia Bohemica] [.] Epistola ad Leonardum Arretinum de morte Hieronymi Hus Bohemi [.]
Venetiis [Venice] per Bernardinum Venetum de Vitalibus 1503 [16th December]. - 4to., 80 leaves, signed [aa-uu]4. Without the final gathering comprising the second part. Covers ruled in gilt with blind-tooled inner border of foliage, inner margins of covers of a lighter colour, spine in six compartments, all gilt-ruled, with gilt D and ducal coronet (Devonshire) at top, gilt sides, dentelles in blind, covers a bit scratched, sympathetically repaired, new red morocco gilt label. All edges yellow. Chatsworth bookplate. Stamp on title-page of H. Cavendish. First post-incunable edition, overall the third (located) of the history of Bohemia of Pope Pius II (1405-1464) (see bibliography). It was issued also with a gathering after the colophon, containing a letter from Poggio Bracciolini to Leonardo Aretino. This part is advertised on the title-page and found in the Cambridge (Adams) copy, although it does not appear in the foliation given on the Italian online census. It is not present here. It is worth bearing in mind that it was common practice in incunable publishing (observable elsewhere in Bernardino de Vitalibus’s surviving output) to produce books in separable parts. This important history, begun the summer before the Pope’s election in 1458 and finished by the time of his death, describes the Hussite wars (1420-1434) and subsequent events into the reign of Pius’s contemporary George Podiebrad (reigned 1458-1471), with whom he clashed over the issue of Hussitism. Pius visited the kingdom as an ambassador for the Emperor Frederick III in 1451. In the sixteenth century Pius’s history was a popular account of Bohemia. A copy from the Chatsworth library of the Dukes of Devonshire. Adams P 1337 (Cambridge University Library). Zíbrt II 1195 (recording three prior incunable editions, cf. the two in ISTC). Rare. COPAC lists a copy in BL; WorldCat gives Ambassador University Library, Texas. A set of works by Pius in Princeton seems to be lacking this part. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Flavio Biondo (1392 – 1463) was an important Italian Renaissance humanist and historian. He is reputed to have coined the term "medio evo" (middle ages) and is known as one of the first archaeologists. Born in the capital city of Forlì, in the Romagna region, Flavio was well schooled from an early age, studying under Ballistario of Cremona. During a brief stay in Milan, he discovered and transcribed the unique manuscript of Cicero's dialogue Brutus. He moved to Rome in 1433 where he began work on his writing career; he was appointed secretary to the Cancelleria under Eugene IV in 1444 and accompanied Eugene in his exile, in Ferrara and Florence. After his patron's death, Flavio was employed by his papal successors, Nicholas V, Callixtus III and the great humanist Pius II. Biondo published three encyclopedic works that were systematic and documented guides to the ruins and topography of ancient Rome.

Hyginus, Gaius Julius, attrib.; Palaephatus; Fulgentius;...
Jacob Micyllus, 1503-1558, ed. Basle: Johann Hervagius [Herwagen], 1549. Folio. a4,a-z6,A4. [8],261,[23]pp. Handsome modern blind-tooled 1/2 morocco over incunable covered boards, paper label; t.p. repaired in blank margin, occ. foxing, nice crisp copy; old owner's name "Mariani Ruele, Carmelite, Rome 1737" on t.p, old owner's stamp; small circular dampstain on t.p, minor repaired wormhole in inner margin of last few leaves Printer's device on t.p., 48 astronomical woodcuts. Hyginus, commonly confused with the freedman of the emperor Augustus, compiled this handbook of mythology, probably in the second century A.D. He was ignorant of Greek, which accounts for some of the absurdities present in his work, and the usual title Fabulae is due to the editio princeps of Micyllus who remains the only authority for the work since his manuscript is lost; this is the second edition of Micyllus, first published in Basel in 1535. Palaephatus (fl. late 4th cent. B.C.)rationalized myths in this, his only extant work. It held considerable influence during the Byzantine period. Fabius Planciades Fulgnetius (ca. A.D.467-532), probably the bishop of Ruspe exiled by the Vandals to Sardinia for his orthodox views, wrote the present offering in dialogue form, through which the muse Calliope reveals the meaning of the myths and Virgil the allegory upon which the Aeneid was composed. Lucius Annaeus Cornutus Phurnutus (fl. A.D.50), the freedman of Seneca, was a teacher of philosophy and rhetoric at Rome, counting Lucan and Persius among his disciples. Only one of his works, the present offering, is extant: in it he expounds the traditions regarding Greek mythology, using principles of Stoic criticism of such and incorporating allegory. Aratus (ca. 315-240/39 B.C.) was a stoic who under the patronage of the Macedonian king Antigonus Gonatas composed the present work. It is his best known work and concerns the northern and southern fixed stars, circles of the celestial sphere, the rising and setting of stars, and weather signs. As an astronomical poem, its style is based upon that of Hesiod and it incorporates Homeric terms. Proclus (A.D. 410/12-485)was a neoplatonic philosopher, a prolific author, and the last great synthesizer of the Greek philosophical inheritance. He bore a great deal of influence upon Medieval and Renaissance thought. The Aratos and Proculs are printed in Greek and Latin. VD 16 H6480. Adams H1252. Houzeau/Lancaster 762. Zinner 1958. Aristotle, pseudo.; Averroes; Avicenna; & Alexandro Achil...
Venice: Bernardinus Venetus, de Vitalibus [Bernardino Vitale], [c1503.] Folio. A-G4,a-g4. 56ff. 19th c. vellum-backed marbled boards, lacks title-piece; light damp stain in center of t.p. and following leaves and at lower margin; marginal expert restorations (no text affected); numerous contemporary marginalia, some ink stains. 6 large decorated initials. "One of the chief characteristics of medieval literature is the degree to which anonymous and pseudonymous texts were diffused and read. The most striking example is the immense literature in a variety of languages which surrounds Alexander the Great's teacher, the philosopher Aristotle, to whom were attributed many different works with little or no claim to authenticity... Some of the Latin versions are based upon Greek texts already attributed to Aristotle in Antiquity, others derive from Hebrew or Arabic roots, while others again seem to be original Latin works which became attached to the name of Aristotle at some time in their history. The most widely diffused of all these works is the one which bears the Latin title Secretum Secretorum. It enjoyed immense influence and the widest circulation from at least the tenth (and quite probably significantly before) to the seventeenth century, with more localized influence enduring even longer. Not all of the Secretis Secretorum editons published under Aristotle's name contain the tract on mineralogy. In fact, apparently none of the dozen or so incunubula editions appear to include it. The first appearance of the work in a published edition of the Secretis Secretorum occurs in the 1501 edition.[This is a reprint of that edition.] Edited by Alexandri Achillini [see note below], this text contains seven treatises on medicine and philosophy: Secreta secretorum; De signis aquarum, ventorum et tempestatum; De mineralibus; Alexander Aphrodisei de intellectu; Averoes de beatitudine anime; Alexandri Achillini de universalibus and Alexandri Macedonis ad Aristotelem de mirabilibus Indie. Four of these are pseudo-Aristotelian works, which were well known since the 13th century or earlier. The Secreta secretorum is here present in the translation of Philip of Tripoli; the De signis aquarum, ventorum et tempestatum on weather signs, was translated in the 13th century by Bartholomew of Messina; the third work by the pseudo-Aristotle is De mineralibus on gems; the fourth Alexandri Macedonis ad Aristotelem de mirabilibus Indie is a fictitious letter by Alexander the Great to his teacher Aristotle, describing the wonders of India and the East. Three other similar 'Indian tractates' are known, all of them connected with the romance of Alexander the Great at various points in history. All four of them were accepted during the later Middle Ages as reliable literary portraits of the Indians, especially of the Brahmans. They originated in the European culture, and became sources for later tellers and writers of fables. The three remaining treatises in the present work consist of a work by Alexander of Aphrodisias on the intellect, another by Averroes on the beauty of the soul, and a work by Achillini himself on universals. The tract, "De Mineralibus", is based upon a manuscript translation made at the end of the 12th century by Alfred the Englishman [see note below] of Avicenna's work on minerals. The origin of the Secret o f Secrets is veiled in obscurity. All known versions go back to an Arabic original, Kitab Sirr al-'asr, r, of which the earliest extant fragment can be dated A.D. 941. The work itself claims, in the Proem, to have been translated from Greek into Syriac and from Syriac into Arabic by Yahya ibn-al-Bitriq, a well-known ninth-century translator active in the period when the largest number of works was being translated from Greek into Arabic. While it is doubtful, though not impossible, that there was a Greek original, it is clear that the extant versions contain a good deal of Greek material, including a certain amount which derives from genuine Aristotelian doctrine. It also, however, contains much which certainly is traceable to Middle Eastern Islamic sources. In structure the work takes the form of an extended letter from Aristotle to Alexander the Great, which was sent to the king while he was engaged in conquering Persia. It is thus parallel to a number of other extant letters, which purport to be epistolory exchanges between the two eminent figures, of which several exist in Greek. The Secret, as it has come down to us, evidently underwent a long period of gestation. It probably originated as a `Mirror for Princes', a familiar medieval literary form in which a wise man (Aristotle) offers moral and political advice to an eminent political leader (Alexander). It thus contains much specific advice on how the king as handled the many requirements of his office. For example, it deals with how the king is to choose and manage his advisors, what diet he should follow, how he should dress, etc. The Secret, as it has come down to us contains much else besides. Probably through a long period of accretion it gradually became a sort of encyclopedic work comprising, in addition to its original moral and political component, much miscellaneous information on occult and pseudo-scientific subjects. Thus there are sections of astrology, physiognomy, alchemy, and magic, in addition to rather detailed medical sections. All known versions derive from one of two Arabic versions, which are extent in a total of about fifty manuscripts. One of the versions is divided into either seven or eight books and is known as the Short Form in Manzalaoui's classification, while the other is in ten books and is known as the Long Form. It was ultimately translated into many different languages... These versions, both in their Latin form and in the many vernacular translations which came from them, were exceedingly widely read for more than four centuries in many different intellectual contexts. Among the major figures of the High Middle Ages who read the work carefully are Albert the Great and Roger Bacon, who wrote a Latin commentary on the Secret. Owing to its encyclopedic nature it was of interest to readers in many different fields ranging from political theory to alchemy, from physiognomy to popular moral philosophy. Though much work has been done previously on many aspects of the Secret, we have by no means reached the stage where one can confidently place the work with its myriad ramifications in its proper historical context. Because it was transmitted in so many diverse cultures and in so many different linguistic and structural forms, to understand fully its overall historical position is beyond the capabilities of any single scholar. There are many unsolved problems of all sorts, ranging from the work's sources to the precise relationship between the various versions in many different languages. Alessandro Achillini. (Born: Bologna, Italy, 20 October 1463; Died: Bologna, Italy, 1512) Italian philosopher & classical scholar. Achillini studied philosophy and medicine at the university of Bologna, where he became a celebrated lecturer both in medicine and in philosophy. From 1506 to 1508, he also taught at Padua. For his commentaries and editorial work, he was styled the second Aristotle. His philosophical works were printed in one volume folio, at Venice, in 1508, and reprinted with considerable additions in 1545, 1551 and 1568. He was also distinguished as an anatomist. Alfred the Englishman.English translator. Also called Alfred of Sareshel and Alfred Angilicus, was one of the English scholastics who was especially important as a translator of (originally) Greek works from Arabic to Latin. His renderings of Aristotle's works occurred during the late 12th century." [Curtis Schuh] ISTC ia1011200 (1 copy). Reichling 1453. GW II, col 578 (note).Curtis Schuh. Maurice Brock
Bronzino
Flammarion-Pere Castor.

LUCIANUS
Opera (graece). Icones Philostrati..
Eiusdem Heroica, Vitae Sophistarum, Icones iunioris. Descriptiones Callistrati. (p. 449:) Venetiis,in aedibus Aldi mense Feb. 385-392 e 435-440; (lievi aloni al primo e all’ultimo f.).Illustre provenienza: Syston Park library, Thorold: “The Syston Park library had ben started, about 1785, by Sir J. Thorold...his son, Sir John Hayford Thorold, was truly a great collector. From 1824, till his death, he built up in an incredibily short time, a beautiful collection of incunabula and Aldines” (SEYMOUR DE RICCI, pp. 159-160). Adams L-1602. Dibdin II, 190: "It exhibits in some places a purer text than the Florentine edition, although, upon the whole, it is not so accurate".

Mortimer I, 137. Trivulziana 154. Predari 136. Cat. Hoepli 647.
