chez Jean Herman Widerhold 2836, A Genève - 2 parties en 1 vol. in-4 à 2 colonnes de (20)-88-480 pp. ; 560 pp., veau brun, dos orné à 5 nerfs, armes sur les plats (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale rare. « L'ouvrage parut à l'étranger car l'Académie française avait un privilège exclusif pour un dictionnaire de langue française. On reprocha en outre au dictionnaire de Richelet sa liberté de langage et les attaques que l'auteur y menait contre ses ennemis et en particulier contre Furetière. Le libraire Widerhold, qui donna la première édition en fit parvenir 1500 exemplaires en France à Villejuif pour les vendre clandestinement en France, mais la confidence qu'il en aurait faite au libraire Simon Bernard aurait entrainé une dénonciation de ce dernier au Syndic qui fit saisir et brûler tous les exemplaires. Widerhold serait mort de chagrin trois jours plus tard, et Bernard poignardé par un inconnu le lendemain de cette mort » (Sauvy, 312). La collation est conforme à celle donnée par Brunet (IV, 1291) ; les Remarques (88 pp.) sont placées en tête du premier volume ; le feuillet d'errata manque. Particular attention is paid to the trade between the Aegean and the Levant, as well as to the «Sea-Peoples». Eine wichtige Gruppe waren die miserabiles personae, zu denen man schon stets alte Menschen und bald auch die Indianer zählte; dem auf eine konstantinische Konstitution zurückgehenden und vor allem im mittelalterlichen Kirchenrecht rezipierten Terminus wird sogar eine herausragende Bedeutung bei der Konfiguration eines rechtlichen status der indigenen Bevölkerung in der Neuen Welt zugewiesen. Will man diesen Fall des Rechtstransfers und die Sonderrechtstraktate insgesamt verstehen, muss man den Gebrauch des Sonderrechtsprinzips in der gelehrten Praxis rekonstruieren und im Licht der besonderen frühneuzeitlichen Wissenschafts- und Rechtskultur interpretieren. In der Untersuchung werden deswegen die Theorie des Sonderrechts (1. Teil) und die Geschichte des Gebrauchs des Terminus "persona miserabilis" in Alter und Neuer Welt nachgezeichnet (2. Teil), um anschließend die Sonderrechte der personae miserabiles, der alten Menschen und der Indianer darzustellen (3. Teil) und zu analysieren (4. Teil). Die Rekonstruktion der kreativen Aneignung der Autoritäten des ius civile und des ius canonicum durch die frühneuzeitlichen Autoren sowie der Blick über den Atlantik helfen bei einer begrifflichen Bestimmung des Sonderrechts (5. Seven pages total, approximately 1500 words, in part (from the 1853 letter): "[We] went to the Indian country [i.e., northeastern Kansas], we went up the country on the South side of the Kaw or Kanzas river about forty miles, intending to cross it there and explore the country on the north side, but the ferry was not kept up there, so we returned by another route to the Missouri. We were well pleased with the country as far as we saw it, the land appeared to be very rich but lay too rolling, is well wattered, and near breaks of the creeks and river there is abundance of limestone for building fencing or any other purpose. There is no stone or rock of any kind on the high prairie to be in the way of the plow, there is a scarcity of timber in the country. We were near four days traveling in the territory and saw but two white men. The Indians appeared very friendly and gave us any information we asked for in respect to the roads, the best places to cross creeks &c. There are no white settlements yet in the territory. There will be a treaty held with the Indians this season and it is thought some of the tribes will sell their lands and there are other portions of the country that has never been given to any of the tribes which it is thought Government will soon permit the whites to settle." Entering Mills County, Glover notes "This part of Iowa is a fine rich country, it is generally more rolling than I should like. There are a great many never failing springs of excellent water, timber is scarce generally ... the Mormons first settle this country about six years ago, and have most of them since sold their claims to other settlers. There are but few here now that have lived here more than two years. I have bought a claim on one quarter section for $400 ... the claim I have bought is in one mile of Glenwood, the county seat and one mile of a tolerably good saw and grist mill." Glover's first letter includes a detailed two-page account of the death of a son, to chills and fever. Folded for mailing, with address on verso of integral leaf. La composition est échelonnée sur plusieurs plans : au fond, un ville imaginaire, où s’animent des petits personnages peints à l’or ; en plan intermédiaire, les remparts d’une cité et 2 paysans ; au 1er plan, Marie et Jésus, sous au haut vent percé, élégamment relevé d’une fine couche de neige. Le Christ est posé sur un linge blanc, lève le bras droit en signe de bénédiction ; derrière lui, se tiennent le bœuf et l’âne. La palette, très douce, se compose de vieux rose, de bleu ciel, et bleu profond, d’un dégradé de brun pouvant aller jusqu’à la teinte lie de vin ; les drapés finement travaillés sont rehaussés de gouache blanche finement ombrée ; l’or liquide est utilisé en complément de l’ensemble.

Der Frage nach dem Spannungsverhältnis von Mündlichkeit und Schriftkultur wird anhand der Lesestoffe für den "Gemeinen Mann" in Dänemark im 17. Jahrhundert, der Vorlesekultur in einer bäuerlichen Kultur im Ungarn der Frühen Neuzeit, des Tagesschrifttums im England des späten 17. Jahrhunderts und der Vorlesepraktiken im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert in der Schweiz nachgegangen. Die Beziehungen von Handschrift und Buchdruck einerseits und von Handschrift und Gedächtnis andererseits sind das Thema von Aufsätzen über spanische Schreibmeisterbücher, venezianische Familienchroniken und die Publikation italienischer Briefeditionen des 16. Jahrhunderts. Ebenso werden Schreibtafeln in Spanien, eine Art frühneuzeitliches Notizbuch, und ihre Bedeutung für das Gedächtnis behandelt; daneben der ausserordentliche Fall des "Graffitomanen" Retif de la Bretonne und ein Korpus anonymer Briefe des 19. A somewhat surreal piece, with the head and some of the instruments floating in the air against a rich blue background, Christ standing before a tomb clad in loincloth and red cloak with a blue cloak on the tomb, a ladder and pillar at each side. - first ed, large quarto, publ's imitation leather binding, XXIX+336pp, one of 1500 numbered copies, numerous plates in half-tone printed on matte stock, one plate folding, pages printed on high quality laid paper, a fine copy except that the spine lettering is faded, pages bright and clean. Stacy-Judd was among other things a respected architect who was the first to introduce Mayan motifs into architectural design. A few of his buildings can still be seen today in Los Angeles. Manly P. Hall's influence on Stacy-Judd is obvious. There were at least two reprints of this large volume, smaller in format and without the special reproduction of the plates in sepia, and without the folding plate on thin paper. (segn. a-d4, e3) - carattere gotico; 40 linee per pagina; carta a1 verso con l' insegna tipografica del Sessa (un gatto con un topo in bocca); grande iniziale dell' incipit alla carta a2; 7 diagrammi silografici; 72 figure silografiche di carattere astronomico, di cui le prime 12 anticamente acquerellate; in una delle pagine di guardia iniziali, disegno di mano otto-novecentesca raffigurante gli astronomi Albumasar e Tolomeo in un momento di studio; due ex libris di appartenenza; legatura novecentesca in mezzo marocchino rosso e cartone marmorizzato; esemplare con qualche macchiolina; uno strappo anticamente restaurato alla carta e1; ma, nel complesso molto ben conservato. Prima edizione illustrata, prima edizione italiana e seconda in assoluto (la prima fu stampata ad Asburgo, nel 1488, da Erhard Ratdolt) di una delle tre opere di carattere astronomico (Introductorium in astronomiam e De magnis coniunctionibus, annorum revolutionibus ac eorum profectionibus) di Albumasar. Fu tradotta da Giovanni di Siviglia, che introdusse altre opere di scienziati arabi in Europa. ALBUMASAR (Ahmad Abu Ma' Shar). Medico e astronomo arabo-persiano (nato a Balkhi e morto a Wasit, Mesopotamia centrale 886 d.C.) che lavorò a Bagdad nel IX secolo.Si convertì al cristianesimo e visse alla corte del califfo Al-Ma' mun. Alcune sue opere, nel XII secolo, furono tradotte in latino da Ermanno Dalmata e da Giovanni da Siviglia ed ebbero larga diffusione. Più volte ristampate fin dal XV secolo, rivelano un forte influsso di dottrine persiane. Prima edizione italiana. (sur 249); 3ff., 234ff., [7ff.], soit 244 ff. au total (sur 249: manque le dernier cahier F, de 6 ff. avant l’index) Exemplaire lavé, en très bon état général, dans une élégante reliure du 20è siècle en maroquin havane, vert bronze, grenat et fauve, dos lisse et plats richement ornés d'un décor de motifs estampés, plats doublés encadrés d’une guirlande dorée, tranches dorées (reliure signée G. Slingler(?) à Rome). Curieux et spectaculaire ex-libris frappé sur le contreplat et peint de deux jolies femmes dévêtues dans un décor antique (Ernesti Pagnoni). Bel exemplaire, malheureusement incomplet d’un cahier, de cette édition milanaise post-incunable ornée de la marque d’imprimeur en tête de la page de titre. Selon une notice de la Bibliothèque Nationale, cette édition pourrait être antérieure à 1502, “puisqu'elle ne contient pas les "viginti et quatuor exempla" qui parurent pour la première fois dans l'une des éditions aldines de 1502”.
