Johannes Eichmann, genannt Dryander, "am 27. Juni 1500 in Wetter in der Nähe von Marburg geboren, hatte 1518 mit dem Studium der "artes" an der Universität Erfurt begonnen, in Bourges und (vermutlich) Paris Medizin und Mathematik studiert und 1533 in Mainz die medizinische Doktorwürde erlangt. Im selben Jahr noch wandte sich der Kanzler des Landgrafen Philipp von Hessen, Johannes Feige (1482 -1543) an ihn, um ihn nach dem Fortgang des ersten ordentlichen Professors der Medizin an der neu gegründeten Universität Marburg, Euricius Cordus (1486-1535), dessen Famulus Dryander in Erfurt gewesen war, für die vakant gewordene Stelle in Marburg zu gewinnen. Die Verhandlungen scheinen sich jedoch zunächst zerschlagen zu haben. Der Leibarzt des Landgrafen Philipp, Johannes Meckbach (1495-1555) wurde Dryander vorgezogen, so daß dieser vorerst in Koblenz blieb, wo er noch im selben Jahr, am 24. Dezember seine Schrift über das Emser Bad abschloß. Erst nach der Entlassung Meckbachs wurde Dryander nach Marburg als Professor der Medizin und Mathematik berufen, wo er bereits vor seinem Antritt am 1.6.1535 eine öffentliche Sektion abgehalten hatte, der 1536 die zweite, 1539 die dritte und 1558 die vierte folgten. Dem Vorwort des Rektors der Universität Marburg zu Dryanders Anatomielehrbuch aus dem Jahre 1536 ist zu entnehmen, daß nach einer Bestimmung des Landgrafen Philipp jährlich ein bis zweimal am Leichnam von Verbrechern Anatomie gelehrt werden sollte. Auf diese Aufforderung gehen Dryanders Sektionen vom 1. Juni 1535 und 1. März 1536 zurück, sie gehören zu den frühesten Zergliederungen überhaupt, die in Deutschland bekannt geworden sind.Dryander betrachtete die Anatomie als Fundament der Medizin. In seiner Antrittsvorlesung, die am 25. Oktober 1535 stattfand und den Auftakt sowie das Programm seiner Lehrtätigkeit bot, verteidigte er mit Nachdruck das Studium der Anatomie als unentbehrliche Voraussetzung für die medizinische Praxis. Marburg, die erste protestantische Hochschule, 1527 gegründet, das Jahr, in dem Paracelsus eine neue Heilkunde proklamierte und die Bücher der scholastischen Autoren öffentlich verbrannte, mußte ihm als ein günðstiger Ort zur Verwirklichung seiner Reformideen erscheinen. So setzte sich Dryander schon zu Beginn der Marburger Amtszeit energisch und nicht ohne Erfolg für die Verbesserung des medizinischen Unterrichts ein. Er forderte eine Vorbildung in der "physica", der allgemeinen Naturgeschichte, die mit einem öffentlichen Examen nachzuweisen war und verlangte die praktische Ausbildung der angehenden Medici, welche die Professoren auf ihren Patientenbesuchen begleiten sollten. Die Praxis sollte generell vor den "lectionibus" den Vorrang haben, nicht trockenes Bücherwissen, die philologische Zergliederung klassischer Texte sollte den Studenten der Medizin leiten, sondern die eigene Einsicht in die "beste Bibliothek, die Natur". Dryander befaßte sich nicht nur mit der Reform des Medizinstudiums, sondern auch mit Verbesserungen des Medizinalwesens. Auf seine Verðanlassung hin wurde 1539 die Leprosenschau eingeführt. Er forðderte nicht nur die jährliche Visitation der amtlichen Apotheken, sondern zugleich auch die Abschaffung der Winkelapotheken und die Beseitigung des Kurpfuscherunwesens. In der Bekämpfung der medizinischen Scharlatanerie erwies sich Dryander als ebenso unerðmüdlicher Richter wie gewaltiger Wortschöpfer. Keine Gelegenheit versäumte er, in derben und drastischen Ausdrückendie unerfarnen Kaelberaerzte, Landstreicher und Leudbescheißer" zu beschimpfen, die ihre "künstlin / hinderm ofen gelernt. zu allen gebrechen / ein Artztnei / ein Tranck / ein Salb / ein Pflaster oder so ein ungereumpts / daß mancher das leben darob verzettet." Neben seiner Lehr- und Forschungsarbeit praktizierte Dryander außerdem in den beiden, unter seiner Leitung aus den Klöstern Haina und Merxhausen umgewandelten Landeshospitälern. Edition Originale de cet ouvrage de controverse religieuse et philosophique du théologien anglais Richard Smyth, le premier "Regius Professor of Divinity" de l'Université d'Oxford. Né dans le Worcesterhire vers 1500, Smyth fait ses études au Merton Collège d'Oxford, entre à l'Université d'Oxford en 1532 et en 1536 Henri VIII le nomme "Regius Professor of Divinity", poste nouveau qu'il est le premier à occuper. Sous le règne d'Edouard VI, favorable aux protestants, il perd sa situation et s'exile à Louvain. Il retourne en Angleterre à l'arrivée au trône de la catholique Marie Tudor et retrouve son influence. Après la mort de Marie Tudor en 1548 et l'accession au trône de la reine Elisabeth, le sort lui est de nouveau contraire. Il connaît la prison et de nouveau l'exil. Il choisit Douai où il est nommé doyen de St. Pierre et à la fondation de l'Université en 1562, Chancellier et Professeur de Théologie. Il meurt à Douai quelques mois plus tard, en 1563. Cet ouvrage fut publié à Louvain peu avant sa mort. Sur Richard Smyth voir: J. Andreas Loewe, "Richard Smyth and the language of the Orthodoxy". 2). Edition Originale. A very fine leaf which was produced in Bruges at the greatest period of Ghent / Bruges trompe l'oeil illumination. Numerous illuminated manuscripts were produced there, many of them of a very high standard, such as this one, for a very wide market. The manuscript from which this leaf comes was written in an attractive Italianate gothic script and would have been destined for Italy. Other manuscripts would have been written in different styles of script, depending on where the export market lay.The leaf introduces the prayer to the Virgin which begins "Obsecro Te". .

Der Codex ist nicht nur eine der großen Schöpfungen romanischer Buchkunst in Deutschland. Er ist zugleich ein eindrucksvolles Monument der weltlichen wie geistlichen deutschen Geschichte, einzigartig deshalb, weil er ebenso von mittelalterlicher Frömmigkeit zeugt, wie seine Bilder den weltlich-politischen Anspruch Heinrichs des Löwen kundtun. Das Evangeliar Heinrichs des Löwen ist vollständig. Die Malereien in Deckfarben, mit Purpur und Gold, sind ungetrübt in ihrer Leuchtkraft. Der Codex umfasst 50 ganzseitige Miniaturen, davon 17 Kanontafeln, 4 Evangelistenbilder, 9 Zierseiten und 20 Bildseiten. Modern boards covered with vellum musical manuscript, small skilful repair to title-page at lower edge (old owner’s name removed?), a few headlines slightly shaved, last leaf expertly laid down (washed?), very good copy, clean with pages in excellent condition. Double column, 45 lines plus headline, gothic letter, 5-line woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device on final recto. 87 Sermons, the last not in contents list. Reprinting the text printed in Pavia in 1482 Britannicus took over the colophon amending it to include his name in place of Ioannes de Ripa. Gregorius Britannicus was a brother of the printers Angelo & Giacomo Britannicus who printed this book. “...Bernard believed that everything in Scripture is meaningful if approached in love, he thinks and speaks like the Scriptures. Exzellentes Beispiel für die Buchmalerei der französischen Frührenaissance. - Im Mittelpunkt thront die kostbar gewandete Muttergottes mit dem nackten und gemarterten Corpus Christi auf dem Schoß. Der Kopf des Heilands wird von der heiligen Veronika mit dem Schweißtuch gestützt. Zu Füßen Christi kniet Maria Magdalena, die den Deckel des goldenen Salbgefäßes anhebt. Die Betenden, Maria Mutter des Jacobus und die ägyptische Maria, ergänzen den Halbkreis um die intime Szene. Hinterfangen wird die Gruppe vom Kreuz, an das noch zwei Leitern zur Abnahme des Leichnahms angelehnt sind. Im Mittelgrund deuten ein blühender Strauch und die frisch-grüne Wiese auf die durch Golgatha verheißene Erlösung. In der Ferne ragen links und rechts die Türme Jerusalems in den Horizont. Die meisterhafte Luftperspektive schafft Tiefenräumlichkeit. Vor die Darstellung ist im unteren Bilddrittel eine Tabula ansata mit zwei Zeilen Text eingeschoben: "Vie miserable en la gloire de paradis Amen". Darum sind einige Arma Christi arrangiert: Hammer, Bohrer, Nägel , Dornenkrone. Die Köperbehandlung der Figuren zeugt ebenso von Naturbeobachtung wie von den Einflüssen der italienischen Renaissance. So erinnern die Gastalten der Veronika und Magdalena an die Malweise eines Pietro Perugino. Die Goldhöhungen sind mit äußerst feinen Haarpinseln ausgeführt und verleihen dem Blatt seine preziose Note. Auch die aufwändig gestalteten Rahmenbordüre verrät den neuen Stil: Goldene und blaue bzw. grüne Doppelsäulen tragen über Kapitellen einen mit Palmetten besetzten Spitzgiebel. Links hängt eine Ghirlande mit floralen und zoomorphen Grotesken herab. Die Konsole unter dem Sockel ist in der Manier Raffaels als Seraphim gestaltet. Das im Mittelalter entstandene Andachtsbild der Pieta wurde in diesem Blatt durch vier Personen zu einer renaissancehaften Beweinung Christi erweitert. Der 17zeilige Text auf der Rückseite mit inniger Bitte um Gnade: "mon dieu, mon createur ie vous prie aussi pour mes parens, freres et seurs et amis et ennemys et pour toute la congregation des crestiens...". Am Bug zwei minimale Braunfleckchen. Gold- und Farbauftrag unten leicht berieben. Die auch kunsthistorisch interessante Miniatur in frischen, leuchtenden Farben bis auf kleinste Fehlstellen wohlerhalten.

Plain black softcovers, as issued. Text by Richard Hell. Word-drawings and prints by Christopher Wool. Printed on pristine-white archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with a reproduction of one of the word-drawings, "perpenilsis", on the cover, and black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Richard Hell and Christopher Wool's shared and obsessive interest in experiences associated with reading. They "create images using a selection of word pairings that are both conceptually estranged yet subliminally connected. The result is by turns a reading and a non-reading book which balances precariously between the worlds of rational ordered sense and the realm of polymorphous chaotic association" (The New Museum). That's true, but its academic tone does not do justice to the work's transgressive wit and beauty. The intended effect is to delight and disturb at the same time, which is what every true work of art is supposed to do. This is achieved by pairing a "clean" word with a "dirty" one: "reaction" is paired with "erection", "love story" with "lavatory", "stuns" with "anus", "sacred" with "scared", "nicest" with "incest", "perils" with "penis", among others, the Sacred and Profane become one. The method is fusion (instead of distinction) to the point that some words become a whole new word altogether, such as the Greek-sounding "perpenilsis" (from "perils" and "penis"). "To spend time in Wool's art is something akin to being caught in the compulsive and circular absurdity of a Beckett play. Like Beckett's Godot, its importance, let alone its existence, may well be something that can never be quite confirmed. But in his own tireless vigil, he brings to the activity particular and extraordinary worth" (Neville Wakefield).
