[HUS, Johannes, Pseudo-]
Gesta Christi
Memmimgen: Albrecht Kunne, 1498. Extremely rare edition (2nd; lst Speier 1472) of this condensed synopsis of the Life of Christ as taken from the Gospels. The work presents a number of historical riddles: that of intended audience and its function, and in addition, a number of bibliographical problems: who wrote it (Hus' name appears in neither incunable edition); why and when it was (mis-) attributed to the great Czech reformer and martyr Jan Hus, none of whose generally accepted works was published before 1522, and whose collected works were published in Nuremberg in 1558. In the latter volume, the present tract was included (more on which below).Textually, the work presents the principal events of the Passion narrative in simple Latin, giving citations for the relevant passages in each Gospel. Generally there is a reference to a single passage, but occasionally there are two or three: the references are vague, providing chapter but not verse number. The text betrays no indication that the evangelists contradict one another, and why multiple sources are listed, however selectively, remains an open question. The present copy has been compared to the sole US copy (Beinecke) and the three copies in Munich, all of which lack watermarks. This suggests that the book was printed !on the cheap! from the leftovers of larger folio sheets; the relatively rough quality of the printing corroborates the historical context and may provide a clue for the work's readership. This is in contrast to the first edition printed from Speier, a handsomely printed volume in two columns in small folio format, which utilizes two columns and a much larger gothic font, and was printed on better paper stock. The present copy has been compared to the Morgan copy of the Speier edition: textual collation suggests no differences save abbreviations and variant spelling of place names. There is no positive reason to believe that the present edition was taken from anything other than a copy of the first. As stated above, there is no positive evidence that in the 15th century, either of these editions were ascribed to Hus. The dates of publication 1472/1498 are arguably too early to reflect the Reformist appropriation of Hus as a precursor. The cause for the hypothetical misattribution appears to be the fact that the work was included in the first collected edition of the reformer's works in 1558, and then, apparently in error, retrojected back to the earlier, separate incunable editions by 18th- and 19th-century incunabulists. This error is perpetuated in modern incunable catalogues.Nonetheless, it raises an interesting question: from the standpoint of mid-16th-century Nuremberg Reformers, why was this considered a Hussite text? One should mention that the text also circulated in manuscript (ONB 2691/92). It is not uncommon for manuscripts of works to make their way into collected editions, but this still begs the question of why this was taken to be a Hussite text in the first place. Possibly the text's bare recitation of events was taken to be in line with the Hussite-Wyclif insistence on the Bible as the rule of faith, passionately proclaimed by Luther and later Reformers, but we leave to specialists the task of explaining the attribution. With thanks to Stephanie Fischer of the Incunable section of the BSB for checking the Munich copies. For the first edition (Speier 1472, H-557), Goff lists Huntington, LC (Thayer), Morgan, and the Scheide Library.* Goff H-557 (listing one copy, Yale); BMC II.608; HC 9058; cf. [18.3 x 13 cm], (12) ff. Bound in quarter vellum and blue boards, title calligraphed on spine in gothic letters. Ownership inscription (illegible) clearly dated 1569 on verso of final leaf. [Bible in Latin]
BIBLIA LATINA
Basel: Joh. Amerbach, ed. Anton Koberger, 1498. Vol. I complete with the texts of Genesis /Exodus / Leviticus / Numbers / Deuteronomy /Joshua /Juith / Ruth / Regum IIII / Paralipomenon II / Esdre IIII / Tobias / Judith / Hester / Job. Printed in double column in Gothic font, a profusion of large initials with lateral extensions decorated by hand in red and blue and a profusion of smaller letters and initials decorated also by hand in red and blue. There are also: 24 magnificent engraved figures throughout including early reproductions of NoahOs Ark, The Sacrificial Alter, The Ten Commandments, The Great Menorah and The Temple of Solomon. The commentary, of significant import, is by Cardinal Hugo di Saint-Chair who was active in the early part of the 13th century and who died in 1262. Folio, ff 464 nn., in a superb contemporary binding of full blindstamped pigskin with clasps, the spine with wide raised bands, the covers blocked beautifully with full Renaissance designs. A wonderfully preserved calligraphic rendering on the inner rear board remains and is dated from 1402. Offset from the original vellum pastedown, this is an inclusion of significant import. 464 folio leaves unnumbered. (signed: a-b8, c6, d8, e6, f-g8, h6, i-k8, l 6, m6, n8, o6, p8, q6, r8, s-t6, v8, x6, y8, z6; A-C8, D6, E-G8, H-L6, M-Z ed aa-vv alternating 8 and 6), complete. A superb copy of this rare book. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. The book is extremely fresh, beautifully preserved, and one conjectures nearly as pristine as could be expected.. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL PRINTING OF THE ILLUSTRATED KOBERGER LATIN BIBLE. Anton Koberger was for a number of years the leading publisher of his time. The total list of his printings for the forty years from 1473 to 1513, when he died, comprises no less than two-hundred and thirty-six separate works, including fifteen impressions of the Biblia Latina, eight of which presented material differences of notes and commentaries which entitled them to be considered as distinct editions. "In the actual number of separate works issued, Koberger was possibly equaled by one or more of his contemporaries, but in respect to literary importance and costliness, and in the beauty and excellence of the typography, the Koberger publications were not equaled by any books of the time excepting the issues of Aldus in Venice" (Putnam II, p. 150). This superb illustrated folio Bible is one of the most beautiful printed by Koberger and is a wonderful example of the magnificent productions made during the first generation of printed Bibles, the state of preservation and the impressive binding making it all the more so. Further volumes of the Bible were not published until 1502. This magnificent example, complete, provides one with the opportunity to have a copy of a great illustrated incunable Bible rarely encountered in the open marketplace.

LOCHMAIER, MICHAEL. - [THE FIRST HANDBOOK FOR PARISH PRIE...
Parochiale curatorium. [Prestantissimi sacre theologie, necnon iuris pontifitij doctoris et artium magistri. ac ecclesie Patauiensis canonici dn i Michaelis lochmaier parrochiale curatorum feliciter incipit].
(On colophon:) Hagenau, Henrich Gran for Johannes Rynman, 1498, 20. August. Small quarto. A copy with wide margins. Newer (late 19th century) brown half calf w. gilt red title label and gilt ornamentation to back. Corners bumped. First leaf a bit soiled and with many old owener's names. Repair to upper part of first leaf, due to worm-hole, far prom affecting printed text. The two following leaves with small worm-hole to upper margin, far from affecting text. Occasional soiling and minor brownspotting. Many leaves with contemporary marginal annotations and occasional contemporary underlinings. The marginal annotations have been full preserved when the book was rebound, and the margins have not been cut. Printed in double columns with 34 lines to each, and headlines; rubricated throughout. (12 (being title and Tabula), 1 (blank), 139) ff. - i.e. with all 152 ff., including the blank, which has been lacking in other identified copies. ¶ Exceedingly scarce incunable-edition (the first printed by Gran) of the first general handbook for parish priests, i.e. the first official parish handbook. Before Lochmaier's "Parrochiale curatorum", parish handbooks were usually written by the individual parish priests for their own use, as no reliable, official or general handbook existed. The "Parrochiale curatorum" describes all that a parish priest needs to know, and as such it is the first work to remedy the great lack of such a work, which had otherwise occasioned merely individual efforts. The first printing of the work appeared without place and without date, but not earlier than 1493. A reproduction of this edition appeared in Leipzig in 1497 (by Kachelofen), and in 1498 this, the third edition of the work, appeared in Hagenau. In 1499 Lotter produced yet an edition of the work, in Leipzig, and in 1500 Furter produced one in Basle. All these editions are scarce. The work continued to appear into the 16th century.Heinrich Gran (active en Hagenau 1489 - 1527) was a highly important German printer, who introduced printing to the German city of Hagenau, which in the 15th century was a city of much greater importance than it is today. Together with Mentelin and Eggestein, he was one of the pioneers of book-printing in Alsace. The great pioneering publisher Johann Rynmann of Augsburg was one of Gran's most important clients, and the present work constitutes one of their very early collaborations. Between 1501 and 1527, Rynmann financed 174 out of the 213 works that Gran produced during this period. Incunables by Gran are of great scarcity.Graesse IV:243. Hain II:10169.

Along with Venice Pisa and Amalfi, Genoa was one of the maritime republics that dominated trade in the Mediterranean. In addition to Corsica, Sardinia and lands in Liguria and Piedmont, Genoa controlled colonies in the Middle East. Its fortunes declined during the fourteenth century due to the Black Death, which entered Europe through the Genoese trading post at Caffa in the Crimea, and wars with Venice, France and Milan. Genoa would later enjoy a revival of power and prosperity under the leadership of Andrea Doria, who introduced a new constitution in 1528. The 1498 compilation of Genoa's civil and criminal law was issued at a time when Genoa had suffered through nearly a century and a half of misfortune. With the title in an architectural woodcut frame with 9 putti and the coats of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the city of Wurzburg, and a pointing hand in the margin of one page. With one page struck through in ink by a censor for deletion, but still present and completely readable. Modern half cloth.
      - (14) pp. BMC STC German, p. 665; VD-16, O-1099 (9 copies); not in Adams; for Osiander: ADB XXIV, pp. 473-483.First and only edition of the first publication written by the mystic Reformation theologian Andreas Osiander (1498-1552), appointed priest to the St Lorentz church in Nürnberg in 1522, on the Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 2. Osiander was to become a leading Reformation theologian (though sometimes at odds with Luther and Melanchthon) and in 1543 he oversaw publication of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus. Ramminger at Augsburg issued the sermon anonymously and without the author's consent or knowledge. On the title-page, the compositor accidentally turned the n of "Ain" on its head, so that it is sometimes mistranscribed "Aiu."Already in this first work from his pen (not counting his editorial contribution to a Bible in 1522) he fell afoul of the authorities, for in the present copy a censor has marked the text of one page for deletion. With a water stain at the head of the first quire, a small ink stain on the woodcut frame, and a small worm hole in the last few leaves. First publication written by a Reformation mystic, with a censor's deletion mark.

RABBI SAMUEL. [ BUENHOMBRE (Alfonso), trad. ].
Arte litteraria famati Casparis Hochfeders nurenbergensis. decimanona Martii anno salvatoris nostri M.cccc.xcviii (1498). in-4. (1f.blanc) 22ff. (signatures A-C6, D4). Caracteres gothiques, 2 colonnes et 35 lignes par page. Parchemin moderne frotte. "The fact that Hochfeder describes himself as 'nurembergensis' in this book only may indicate that he printed it at Metz, where he moved in 1498 or 1499" (National Union Catalogue). Manque a Brunet.

Cicero, Marcus Tullius (106-43 a.C.).
A fine copy of this rare selection of Cicero’s popular philosophical works, perhaps intended for the use of students. Appended after the works noted in the title are twelve verse epitaphs for Cicero by various eminent Romans, such as Palladius and Asclepias. ISTC locates 5 copies in Germany (one incomplete), one in the Vaticana, and one in Edinburgh, but no copies in North America, and no copy in BL. 19th-century green morocco, decorated by a gilt border on boards with, in the center, a gilt armorial coat. Very good copy, some minor foxing on first and last leaves. From the Library of: the monastery of ST. Paul in Burgos, the Spanish collector Juan Gomez de la Cortina and the bibliophile Haskell Norman. GW 6990; BAV C, 308; Norman, 483."

MILÁ, Luis de, Cardinal.
Lérida, Heinrich Botel, c.1498. A printed indulgence - for the restoration of the Cathedral of Lérida - from one of the rarest of Spanish fifteenth-century centres of printing. The Saxon Heinrich Botel printed at least two settings each of two separate indulgences designed to gather funds for the rebuilding of the sacristy of the cathedral of Lérida. The difference between the two indulgences is that one is for the living (promising, that is, absolution for various sins, some of them specified) and the other for the dead (for whose souls commemoration in prayers, masses, offices of the dead, etc., was purchased by relatives). The two versions are easily distinguished by the first words, 'A exaltacio' for the dead and 'A honor' for the living, and the ensuing texts. In the case of that for the dead, two copies survive with two settings of each printed one above the other on one side of a folio half-sheet, the upper in 24 lines and the lower in 23 lines.1 The same type (Botel's 104G) is used for the two settings of the indulgence for the living, both of them in 31 lines, which are found one above the other in a single copy in Barcelona;2 the first setting only is further found in this copy and another at the Huntington Library, California.3 In summary, there are three copies known of the first indulgence for the living (Quaritch, Huntington, Barcelona AHM), one only of the second (Barcelona AHM); of the two indulgences for the dead, two copies are known of the first (Cambridge and Lérida) and three of the second (Library of Congress, and the twins of the first at Cambridge and Lérida). The indulgence is issued in the name of Cardinal Luis Juan de Milá, Bishop of Lérida (Lleida, in Catalan) and one of the most powerful churchmen of the latter half of the fifteenth century. His mother was Caterina de Borja, the sister of the Alonso de Borja who became Pope Calixtus III on 8 April 1455. Luis de Milá was already by that stage Bishop of Segorbe (near Valencia), from 1453 until his translation to the see of Lérida on 7 October 1459. He retained that bishopric even after becoming cardinal priest of SS. Quattro Coronati ('Cardinal de santiquatre' in the indulgence) in September 1456, a position held by Calixtus III until his elevation to the papacy. This first creation of his uncle's reign also saw his younger cousin Rodrigo Borgia, later the infamous Alexander VI, made cardinal deacon by the familiar Renaissance practice of papal nepotism. Luis de Milá remained a cardinal for more than fifty years, dying in 1508 as the senior member of the college.4We have apparently good documentary evidence on the circumstances that gave rise to this set of indulgences. The sacristy of the cathedral of Lérida had burned down in 1473. In this 'gran incendi e cremament', as the indulgence puts it (line 4), a great many articles of priestly attire and church ornament were lost. A passage in Jaime Villanueva's Viage literario of 1851 says that the author had seen a decree of 1497 issued by Juan of Aragón, the king's lieutenant in Catalonia. The decree ordered the revenues of the bishop to be sequestered at the instance of the chapter of the cathedral, frustrated that throughout the bishop's long tenure the sums designated each year for the repair of the sacristy had never been applied to that purpose. As a result Bishop Milá offered to pay 6,000 sueldos (in Catalan, sous)5 towards the repairs on 22 November 1498, in the same year issuing a printed decree granting indulgences to those who contributed to this pious work.6This, then, is clear enough proof that the four indulgences (and possibly others now lost) were at least first printed in 1498. They are thus by some way the latest known products of the printer Botel's career, his last dated book being of 1495 and nothing further, apart from the indulgences, plausibly datable later. Heinrich Botel of Einbeck in Saxony, a priest as well as a printer, had been involved in some of the earliest books printed in Spain. He undertook to teach two other Germans the art of printing at Barcelona in 1473 and the Aristotle that was then produced (GW 2371) is the first book known to have been printed in that city. By 1476 Botel had moved to Zaragoza and printed there with various companions before repairing to Lérida in 1479. In the Catalan city, situated between Barcelona and Zaragoza, some 90 miles from each, he began printing independently and without competitors for the first time, issuing a local breviary on 16 August 1479.7 His production thereafter was intermittent and not copious (a total of nineteen books and seven indulgences, in Latin, Catalan, and twice in Spanish), which suggests that his press was not continuously active and that he had other employment as occasion offered.8 Botel's name does not appear after the Sagramental of 5 November 1495 (BMC X 46); but unless an anonymous successor was using his types in these Catalan indulgences, he was still at work late in 1498.The text of the indulgence itself is interesting for the extensive list of sins for which the purchaser of this document (at a cost of two sous, line 8) could have absolution through a confessor: involuntary homicide, blasphemy, getting married in secret, eating meat during Lent or eating meat or drinking wine [sic] that belonged to Moors, killing or suffocating by negligence one's children in bed, perjury, arson, theft, invocation of evil spirits, abortion, having illicit relations with female relatives or nuns, failing to say the required canonical hours (for the religious), committing the crime of luxury in churches, keeping concubines (provided that they leave them and return to their wives), hearing Mass during one's marriage in time of interdict or giving church burial while under interdict (publicly imposed by the bishop with the cathedral doors open and the bells ringing). All pardons and graces granted by the bishop's predecessors are here confirmed in veneration of the glorious relics of the Holy Cloth and the Holy Thorn. It is not clear whether these relics survive in the Seu Vella of Lérida, a fine example of the Transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic architecture, dating from 1203 but much abused as a garrison for more than two centuries until the mid-1940s. The Holy Cloth, as the first two lines of the indulgence tell us, was a fragment of Christ's swaddling-clothes:9 indeed a rarissimum incunabulorum.Footnotes: 1. A reduced facsimile of the folio page with both together is given by F. Vindel, El arte tipográfico en España durante el siglo XV, 9 vols (Madrid, 1945-51), I, Cataluña, no. 130, p. 212. The whereabouts of that page was unknown to Vindel at the time of writing but it is presumably one of the two copies now known: at Cambridge UL (J. C. T. Oates, A Catalogue of the Fifteenth-Century Printed Books in the University Library Cambridge (Cambridge, 1954), no. 4050, presented by S. Gaselee in 1934) and at Lérida, Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs, Legat Areny (Catálogo general de incunables en bibliotecas españolas [IBE]: Adiciones y correcciones, ed. by J. Martín Abad, I, (Madrid, 1991), nos 6342 and 6343). The latter copy was purchased from Maggs in the late 1940s ([María del Carmen] T[orres] G[raell], 'La paleografía tipográfica de las Bulas incunables leridanas', Ilerda, 19 (1955), 129-35, at p. 132. She gives a reduced photograph of the Areny copy opposite p. 131). The second setting in 23 lines is also found by itself in a copy offered in Maggs catalogue 402 (1921), 653B ('the only copy known'), which may well be that recorded at the Library of Congress (Goff, Census, M-470). The 23-line setting is recorded in K. Haebler's Bibliografía ibérica del siglo XV, 2 parts, The Hague and Leipzig, 1903-17, II 433(3), though Haebler did not see it and believed it lost.2. IBE 3941 and 3942 at Barcelona, Archivo histórico municipal.3. Goff M-569; Goff's references are confused, as his notes give one to understand that M-569 for the living and his M-570 for the dead were once two settings on the same sheet, and both are referred to Vindel's reproduction and to Oates, each of which concerns the two indulgences for the dead. H. R. Mead, 'Unique Spanish Incunabula', Gutenberg-Jahrbuch (1950), 153-59 at pp. 154-55 gives details of the Huntington indulgence which confirm that it is the same as the Quaritch copy and also as the first in Barcelona AHM (IBE 3941: note 2 above). The present copy is that sold by Maggs Cat. 402 (1921), 653A, alongside 653B for the dead (see note 1 above), and registered in Goff M-569 as in the hands of the bookseller John Fleming of New York. Mead was wrong to say (p. 154B) that the Huntington copy, in fact bought from A. S. W. Rosenbach in 1925, was that offered by Maggs.4. See K. Eubel, Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, II (Münster, 1901), pp. 12, 72, 188, 258 for details of his church career; also the entry s.v. Milà (in the Catalan spelling) in Diccionari Biogràfic, III (Barcelona, 1969), p. 178; Michael Mallett, The Borgias (London, 1969), ad indicem.5. In Latin solidi, English 'shillings'. As a comparison one may note that Botel engaged by contract to sell his edition of the Fori Aragonum (with Paulus Hurus, Zaragoza, 1477; GW 10174, folio, 380 leaves) at 60 solidi: BMC X, p. l, G. D. Painter in Gutenberg-Jahrbuch (1962), p. 139.6. This passage is taken over by M. Jiménez Catalán, Apuntes para una Bibliografía Ilerdense de los siglos XV al XVIII (Barcelona, 1912), p. 75, and by Vindel (note 1 above), without new evidence. Villanueva printed the text of the indulgence for the dead as doc. XV, pp. 265-66. 7. Breviarium Ilerdense, GW 5363. Lérida thus became the sixth printing town of Spain, after Segovia, Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Seville.8. For details of his career, see BMC X, Introduction, pp. xxxvii-xxxix (Barcelona), l-li (Zaragoza), lvii (Lérida), and also the entry s.v. Botel in Juan Delgado Casado, Diccionario de impresores españoles (Siglos XV-XVII), 2 vols (Madrid, 1996), I, pp. 86-87. There seems no good reason to follow Ferdinand Geldner in believing that Botel died at Lérida in 1495 (Die deutsche Inkunabeldrucker, 2 vols [Stuttgart, 1968-70], II, p. 288).9. ('that most venerable relic of the Holy Cloth wherein our Lord was wrapped and fed by the Virgin Mary'). The relic was examined on a visitation of the Cathedral in 1535 (Villanueva, Viage literario, doc. XVI, pp. 266-67).

HUS, Johannes, Pseudo-]
Gesta Christi.
Memmimgen Albrecht Kunne 1498. - 4to. [18.3 x 13 cm], (12) ff. Bound in quarter vellum and blue boards, title calligraphed on spine in gothic letters. Ownership inscription (illegible) clearly dated 1569 on verso of final leaf. Blank gutter margin of title reinforced; washed; some minor residual staining in lower margin; otherwise good. This suggests that the book was printed ?on the cheap? from the leftovers of larger folio sheets; the relatively rough quality of the printing corroborates the historical context and may provide a clue for the work's readership. For the first edition (Speier 1472, H-557), Goff lists Huntington, LC (Thayer), Morgan, and the Scheide Librar [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Thomatos, Marina
The Final Revival of the Aegean Bronze Age: A Case Study of the Argolid, Corinthia, Attica, Euboea, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese During LH IIIC Mid
Archaeopress. PAPERBACK. 1841719293 This work examines the post-palatial phase of Late Helladic IIIC middle. During this phase in Greek prehistory, Greece undergoes important changes that will transfer the palace administrative system of the Mycenaean era to that of the city-states of the early Greek period. At the time of its publication much of the material evidence known today was still unpublished and although the material examined provided a most thorough account of what was known at the time it was still limited as a result of the lack of publications or as often was the case the lack of LH IIIC, or so defined, deposits. This phase of the BronzeAge has been periodically examined either through the investigation of specific sites or in certain cases with the study of a particular type of material find such as pottery. What this publication aims to provide is a more synthetic study of the middle phase in its entirety within the regions of the central and southern Aegean. By examining the archaeological material from settlements and burials of the middle phase, together with their associated finds of pottery, terracotta figurines, jewellery and weapons, it is hoped that they will provide valuable insight into this phase and provide information concerning the new social and economic structures that arose in response to the loss of the Mycenaean administrative centres. 346p, b/w illus, pls, tabs (BAR S 1498, Archaeopress 2006). 9781841719290. BIBLIA LATINA CUM TABULA NUPER IMPRESSA ET CUM SUMMARIIS NOVITER EDITA. VENEZIA, SIMON BEVILAQUA, 8 MAGGIO 1498.
Testo latino. Cm.21,3x15,4. Marca tipografica di Simone Bevilaqua all'ultima carta. Alcune chiose coeve manoscritte. HISTORIA DA INDIA NO TEMPO EM QUE A GOUERNOVO VISO REY DOM LUIS DE ATAIDE [HISTORY OF INDIA DURING THE GOVERNMENT OF VICEROY DON LUIS DE ATAIDE].. NICOLAU CARVALHO
First Edition. Small Folio. [xxiv], 151, [4], [3], [2]; 162 Leaves, [11] pages. Very handsome period brown elaborately gilt tooled full sheep. In very good condition. Very Rare work as only two copies in Worldcat. "The first Portuguese encounter with India was on May 20, 1498 when Vasco da Gama landed in Calicut (Kozhikode) in the present-day Indian state of Kerala . Over the objections of Arab merchants, Gama secured an ambiguous letter of concession for trading rights from the Zamorin, Calicut's local ruler, but had to sail off without warning after the Zamorin insisted on his leaving behind all his goods as collateral. Gama kept his goods, but left behind a few Portuguese with orders to start a trading post. In 1510, Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque defeated the Bijapur sultans on behalf of a local sovereign, Timayya, leading to the establishment of a permanent settlement in Velha Goa (or Old Goa). The Southern Province, also known simply as Goa, was the headquarters of Portuguese India, and seat of the Portuguese viceroy who governed the Portuguese possessions in Asia. The Portuguese acquired several territories from the Sultans of Gujarat: Daman (occupied 1531, formally ceded 1539); Salsette, Bombay, and Baaim (occupied 1534); and Diu (ceded 1535). Coat of Arms of Goa, Portuguese possession in India (1675)These possessions became the Northern Province of Portuguese India, which extended almost 100 km along the coast from Daman to Chaul, and in places 30-50 km inland. The province was ruled from the fortress-town of Baaim. Bombay (present day Mumbai) was given to Britain in 1661 as part of the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza's dowry to Charles II of England"(Wikipedia). First Edition

With the title in an architectural woodcut frame with 9 putti and the coats of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the city of Wurzburg, and a pointing hand in the margin of one page. With one page struck through in ink by a censor for deletion, but still present and completely readable. Modern half cloth.
. (14) pp. BMC STC German, p. 665; VD-16, O-1099 (9 copies); not in Adams; for Osiander: ADB XXIV, pp. 473-483. First and only edition of the first publication written by the mystic Reformation theologian Andreas Osiander (1498-1552), appointed priest to the St Lorentz church in Nürnberg in 1522, on the Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 2. Osiander was to become a leading Reformation theologian (though sometimes at odds with Luther and Melanchthon) and in 1543 he oversaw publication of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus . First publication written by a Reformation mystic, with a censor's deletion mark..

Aquinas (Thomas)
Opuscula Sancti Thomae: quibus alias impressis nuper haec addidimus. vz. Summae totius logicae. Tractatum celeberrimum de usuris nusque alias impressum. [Edited by Antonius Pizamanus.]
[Venice: Bonetus Locatellus, for Octavianus Scotus.] , 1498 - Gothic type, 65 lines and headline per page, final blank discarded, title slightly dusty and last few leaves just faintly dampmarked, a few minor spots elsewhere, two old ownership inscriptions to title (one struck-through) and one or two marginal notes, ff. 341, folio, late eighteenth-century Italian vellum, skilfully recased, endpapers renewed with old paper, later brown label to smooth backstrip, edges mottled red, head just slightly rubbed, very good A very clean copy of an important incunable edition of Saint Thomas Aquinas?s collected minor works. This is the second Pizamanus edition, and the first in folio form, following a quarto of 1490 printed in Venice by Hermann Liechtenstein. Two additional treatises have been included, bringing the total to 73, and one, on usury, is here printed for the first time. This is thus most complete incunable edition of the Opuscula, of which a small selection had first been printed in the 1470s. This edition was published by Ottaviano Scotto, an enterprising businessman who began as a printer but who later strictly restricted himself to publishing - underwriting and arranging distribution for books produced by other men. Around a dozen printers worked for him, of whom the most important was Boneto Locatelli, a priest from Bergamo and the printer of this book. The colophon dates this edition to the 31st of December, 1498, exactly a week after Scotto?s death, so it seems likely that this was the last book in which he would have been able to personally take an interest. His heirs continued to print books with his name for at least a year before adopting their own imprint. The editor, Antonio Pizzamano, was the era?s leading Aquinas scholar, a correspondent of Poliziano and a friend of Cardinal Grimani; he also produced the first catalogue of the library of Count Pico della Mirandola after his death. Pizzamano?s life of Aquinas is also included in this edition. (ISTC it00257000; BMC V 452; Goff T257; Hain 1542)

Wasserman, Jack
Michelangelo's Florence "Pieta"
Princeton University Press. - 0691016216 Jacket with light edge wear else clean and tight, mark free book. This is NOT an ex-library discard, is theirs? Michelangelo's Florence "Pieta" (Hardcover) by Jack Wasserman (Author), Franca Trinchieri Camiz (Contributor), Timothy Verdon (Contributor), Peter Rockwell (Contributor), Aurelio Amendola (Photographer) Michelangelo produced three sculptures of the Madonna holding the dead Christ in her lap, called the Pieta. The first (1498-99) is at St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. The second (ca.1550) is at the Museo Civico in Milan. The third, called the Florence Pieta and the subject of this exciting book, was started about 1550. Michelangelo worked on it for several years, attacked it one day with hammer and chisel, was stopped by a servant, and never touched it again. Later repaired, the Pieta passed through many hands until it ended up in the Museo dell'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, the subject of many long-raging controversies about why Michelangelo tried to destroy this beautiful work of art. Art historian Wasserman now analyzes numerous documentary studies and conducts a remarkably thorough physical examination of the Florence Pieta, including a gamma-ray scan of its interior, even using a virtual computerized model, which allows him to view the piece in ways that would be impossible in real life, all in an effort to replace speculation with fact. Utterly absorbing, this book sets new standards in art historical scholarship. Victor Cassidy Copyright American Library Association. HORATIUS.
Splendid first illustrated edition of the works of Horace Opera. Cum quibusdam annotationibus.
Strassburg, Johannes Reinhard Grüninger, 1498.. Folio. Elegant 19th century gilt dark green morocco. Large woodcut on title, and over 160 woodcuts in text. (6), 207, (1 blank), (6) lvs.. First illustrated edition of Horace, edited by the poet laureate Jacob Locher, and founded on German manuscripts. Since this is the first edition based on German manuscripts, in stead of Italian, Brunet considers it an "editio princeps". This edition is of great interest because of the splendid illustrations. They were probably made by artists from Terenz, near Strasbourg. The woodcut on the title, repeated at the beginning of each of the 8 books, depicts Jacob Locher studying. On the second leaf is a charming image of the Nine Muses, of which Calliope is shown enthroned, crowning the kneeling Horace. The first book, Carmina, opens with a large woodcut of Horace, facing Mecenas with two attendants. Another interesting woodcut also in the first book, is at the beginning of the second ode. Here Julius Caesar is shown in oriental costume with scimiter, turban and imperal crown, being slain by Brutus and Cassius. All woodcuts are in splendid impressions. The present copy also contains some manuscript inscriptions, including a 15th century note at the end by a professor at the University of Louvain: "Istius Libri possessor est Johannis de Delft...morali(bus) lovanii pedagogio lilii". The work is complete with the index at the end. Fine copy. BMC I, 112; Goff H 461; Hain-Copinger *8898; Fairfax Murray 205.

CHAMPIER SYMPHORIEN
In 4° (mm. 204x143); 20 carte. Fascicolazione: a8, b-c6. Testo in carattere gotico disposto su 28 linee. Senza legatura, in scatola moderna. ANNE (St.)
Legenda s[an]ctissime matrone anne genitricis v[ir]gis marie matris: & hiesu cristi auie. (Leipzig, Melchior Lotter, 16 September
      - 4to. (220 x 148mm.). 23ff. (lacks final blank). Gothic type, 34 lines. 19th/20th century vellum over paste-boards. 1498). Rare edition of this text first published by Lotter in the previous year, one of the first books to appear from his press. To cater for the interest in the life of the Virgin's mother Lotter also published c. 1497-1500 Johann Tritheim's (1462-1516)De laudibus sanctissimae Annae. "All our information concerning the names and lives of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary, is derived from apocryphal literature, the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary, the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and the Protoevangelium of James. Though the earliest form of the latter, on which directly or indirectly the other two seem to be based, goes back to about A.D. 150, we can hardly accept as beyond doubt its various statements on its sole authority. In the Orient the Protoevangelium had great authority and portions of it were read on the feasts of Mary by the Greeks, Syrians, Copts, and Arabians. In the Occident, however, it was rejected by the Fathers of the Church until its contents were incorporated by Jacobus de Voragine in his "Golden Legend" in the thirteenth century. From that time on the story of St. Anne spread over the West and was amply developed, until St. Anne became one of the most popular saints also of the Latin Church." (Catholic Encyclopaedia). A number of margins filled with annotations by a 17th century? German hand. Folio B4 strenghened at inner and upper margins, single wormhole to lower blank margin. GW 2004. H1114*. PAOLO VENETO
Pauli Veneti Logica et Menghi faventini viri carissimi super ea commentum cum questionibus quibusdam
Otino de Luna, Venezia 1498 - In folio (mm. 300x210); 112 carte.

References: (with two-line text on A1) GW M08113; IGI 8168; Reichling 1337; Rhodes, "The Three Florentine Editions of the Psalterio di sancto Hieronymo abreviato," Gutenberg Jahrbuch, (60) 1985, 153-4; Rhodes, Annali tipografici, 533; Kristeller, Early Florentine Woodcuts, 339. The Florentine editions of St. Jerome's late, apocryphal psalms have resisted classification. Dennis E. Rhodes, the British Library incunabulist, admitted as much in "The Three Florentine Editions of the Psalterio di Sancto Hieronymo Abreviato." Rhodes wrote that the Florentine editions "have caused trouble to a number of bibliographers and have consequently given rise to not a few errors." Rhodes corrects some of the errors, but adds "unfortunately I cannot yet provide the answers to all the questions raised by … these editions." The psalms attributed to St. Jerome circulated in manuscript in at least two versions in the centuries preceding printing. The present text was first published in 1476 with a Venice imprint which has since been shown to be a Milan printing (BMC VI, 733). According to Rhodes, only two copies of the first edition survive. That was followed toward the end of the century by an illustrated Florentine printing which, as Rhodes indicates, survives in at least three distinct editions. Identifying and classifying them is complicated by the habit of Florentine printers of the 1490s to issue books without imprints or dates. Typically, blocks and types were used over and over, well into the sixteenth century, further complicating reliable identification. Rhodes distinguishes three Florentine editions of the Psalterio: 1) IGI 8168 (GW M08113) published by Piero Pacini and printed by the Compagnia del Drago, datable to 1498; 2) Proctor 6299 (GW M08112) which Rhodes dates 1510; and an edition dated "1423" (a spectacular misprint for "1523") published by Pacini's son Bernardo. Of the three, the last is by far the most numerous. The present copy is identical to IGI 8168, except it has no text on A1 (where the title is printed above the woodcut in the model). Like IGI 8168, the present copy bears the letters "A.M.A." above Pacini's device on the colophon, which initials are found on two other books definitely attributed to the Societas Colubris, and which Rhodes takes to be the initials of the compositor or press reader. The present copy is clearly distinct from the other two editions described by Rhodes. We conclude that it is a unique variant of IGI 8168, or that A1 is a cancel, lacking the two-line printed title. Surviving examples of Florentine illustrated books are relatively rare, because the presses in Florence were by and large devoted to popular tracts, pamphlets and chapbooks in pocket format (10 years before Aldus), meant to be read, discarded, and reprinted. The Italian-language introduction to the Latin text recommends it as a constant companion, to be carried along in travels, and consumed whenever possible. No great names have been attached to the popular woodcuts made in the Florence of Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, but it would not have been unusual for local artists to have collaborated with a workshop specializing in cutting woodblocks, and recent scholarship has suggested the convent of San Jacopo di Ripoli, site of an active press until 1484, functioned also as a woodblock factory. While both woodcuts are hand-colored, the image on A1 appears to have roughly contemporary coloring (judging by the deterioration caused to the paper by the green pigment) while the woodcut on C2 may have been colored later. GW locates four copies only of this edition: two in Italy, one in Denmark, and one in the United States.

PAOLO VENETO
Pauli Veneti Logica et Menghi faventini viri carissimi super ea commentum cum questionibus quibusdam
Otino de Luna, Venezia 1498 - In folio (mm. 300x210); 112 carte.

Arte litteraria famati Casparis Hochfeders nurenbergensis. decimanona Martii anno salvatoris nostri M.cccc.xcviii (1498). in-4. (1f.blanc) 22ff. (signatures A-C6, D4). "The fact that Hochfeder describes himself as 'nurembergensis' in this book only may indicate that he printed it at Metz, where he moved in 1498 or 1499" (National Union Catalogue).
