M6451, Basel - The Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster (1488 â€" 1552) from 1544 is the earliest German description of the world. It had numerous editions in different languages including Latin, French (translated by François de Belleforest), Italian, English, and even Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628, long after his death. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the fascinating woodcuts (some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, and David Kandel). DIONYSIUS PERIEGETES.
The newly discovered lands in the West' . one of the earliest mentions of America (1508), Situs orbis Di-/onysij Ruffo avi-/eno interprete.
Johann Winterberger, 97PFEN01U79O, Vienna, - 4to. Nineteenth century red morocco with triple gilt lines along the edges, spine gilt in compartments with the title lettered in gold in the second compartment, inner dentelles, gilt edges, marbled end-papers (bound by Emile Adusselle). Roman type. 28 lines to a page. 26 unnumbered leaves (collation: a6, b-f4). Very rare first and only edition of the translation/adaptation in 1.393 Latin verses by Avienus of the original Greek 'Description of the inhabited earth' by Dionysius Periegetes, as edited by Johannes Cuspinianus. It is also the first separately published edition of Avienus's Latin translation. The editio princeps of Avienus's text was published in Venice on 25 October 1488 by Antonius de Strata Cremonensis, edited by Victor Pisanus, together with other texts by Avienus (the Situs orbis is on f. d3v - f. 6r; GW 3131; BMC V 294). After our edition which was edited by Cuspinianus, Avienus's text was published for the third time in November 1513 in Bologna by Benedictus Hectoris (edited by Antonius Modestus); a fourth edition was printed in Vienna in February 1515 by Johannes Singrenius and was edited by Vadianus.Dionysius Periegetes (literally, Dionysius of 'The Description', or 'the guide' to distinguish him from other authors of the same name) is the author of this description of the habitable world in 1,186 Greek hexameter verses, written in a terse and elegant style. Designed more as a geographical handbook for a reader of the Greek poets than as a systematic or scientific treatise on geography, De situ habitabilis orbis undertakes a verse account of the known world and its seas, countries, and islands. Only Book I survives, with an unsteady grasp of actual geography and some far-fetched etymologies. During the Renaissance, it became quite popular, no doubt because of the combined interest of humanists for newly published ancient texts and the growing interest in geography as some translators report of the discovery of new lands. In his dedicatory letter to Stanislaus, bishop of Olomicensis (Olmouc, or Olmütz in Moravia) (f. a1v), the editor od our text, Cuspinianus makes an allusion to the newly discovered lands in the West: ". Tamen plurima seculo nostro sunt & inventa loca prius ignota & a scriptoribus vetustissimus neglecta . " (But more (lands) are discovered in our times which were unknown until now and not mentioned by the ancient writers). This is one of the earliest mentions of the recently discovered New World, and therefore an important Americanum. There is hardly anything known about Dionysius's life and origins, but he is believed to have been from Alexandria and to have flourished around the time of Hadrian, though some put him as late as the end of the 3rd century. The work enjoyed a high degree of popularity in ancient times as a schoolbook. It was translated into Latin (1) by Antonio Beccharia (first edition: 1478; second edition: Paris 1501), (2) by the grammarian Priscian (first edition 1482; in reality translated by Fannius Rhemnius; second edition: Vienna 1512), by Rufus Festus Avienus (first edition 1488; second edition: our book from 1508), and by Simon Lemnius (Venice, Aldus, 1543), who in his dedicatory preface explicitly mentions both Amerigo Vespucci and Columbus and the discovery of America. The best editions in Greek are by Gottfried Bernhardy (1828) and Carl Müller (1861) in their Geographici Graeci minores. There are two old English translations: by Thomas Twyne (1572), and by J Free (1789, blank verse); and a translation into French (1597).The translator Avienus was a Latin writer of the 4th century. His full name 'Postumius Rufius Festus (qui et) Avien(i)us' is mentioned on an inscription from Bulla Regia, but 'Avienus' has become the usual form of reference. He was a native of Volsinii in Etruria, a highly educated man from the distinguished family of the Rufii Festi. He was probably twice appointed consul (if an inscription published by the 17th-century antiquaries Jacob Spon and Raf [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

AEMILIUS (Paulus, Paolo Emilio)

Second absolute edition of Apuleius’ works, preceeded only by the rare 1469 first, printed in Rome by Sweynheym and Pannartz. They are here joined by the Asclepius of Hermes Trismegistus, the only philosophical Hermetic work known in the West during the Middle Ages, supposedly translated by Apuleius. Bound in 19th century half calf with gilt title on spine. Very good copy, some dampstains to the first leaves, small repairs on the lower corners of the last leaves, the last leaf reinforced. Rare edition incunable entierement rubriquee. MAXIMILIAN I Emperor, 1459-1519
Letter addressed to Pope Innocent VIII. and with the signature of Maximilian himself. Dated: Mecklenberg, 6 October
      - Single folio, written on vellum, 24 long lines. Folded and addressed on the back: "Sanctissimo Domino nostro Pape". Size: 323 x 284mm. 1488. An important letter of Maximilian I written to Pope Innocent VIII which highlights the hold that the Pope held over the Holy Roman Empire; signed "MAX" with paraph. The letter shows the concerns of Maximilian regarding the lack of confirmation by Pope Innocent VIII of the Preces Primariae; this was the law or right of the Holy Roman Empire to award benefices in ecclesiastical institiutions to his preferred candidates, and was subject to papal authority. The letter is dated two years after Maximilian had been crowned king of the Romans and shows his impatience that this issue had not been dealt with. The Hapsburg family held the title of Roman king, but to become the Holy Roman Empire it was necessary to have a coronation undertaken by the Pope which often meant waiting for the right moment. Frederick III had been made king in 1442 but did not become Emperor until 1452, while Maxililian was crowned king in 1486, and assumed the title of Emperor in 1508 without formal act of coronation although this was later accepted by Julius II. This system thus bound the Hapsburg family to the Catholic faith, and the family traditionally supported thge Catholic Church. Maximilian writes that he realises that his holiness is very busy, but he is concerned about a matter which very much concerns his honour and status. He writes: "We certify to the same [Holiness] that nothing at this time so much concerns my honour as that the "Preces" be granted, throughout the entire Empire and the dominions subject to my power from the day of my coronation, should be ratified". The other matter in the letter is Maximilian's strong desire for Bishop Luke of Sebenico to be promoted to Cardinal; this refers to Lucas de Tollentis, bishop of Sebenico in Dalmatia from 1470 to 1491, whose claims Maximilian had promoted for some time, but the plea clearly fell on deaf ears.

PETRUS LOMBARDUS
Impreso sobre fuerte papel con tipos claros y nítidos, conserva su encuadernación original en piel sobre tabla. referencias: BMC III, 766; Hain 10195; Goff P-491; Polain 3120 Second edition with the conclusions of Henrici Gorichen and the commentaries of Thomas Aquinas. The Four Books of the Sentences, written between 1148 and 1152 by Petro Lombardo, is the most important theological work of the 12th century. Topically arranged, the work summarizes past learning about Christian doctrine by quoting authorities (these are the “sentences” that give the book its name) and attempting to resolve textual disagreement by dialectical analysis. As a source collection that continued to spark discussion, the “Sentences” enjoyed great success as a theological text-book until the 17th century and inspired numerous commentaries, including those of Aquinas and Luther. A very good copy bound in contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, hand-written label on front cover and spine.

BRUNFELS ( Otto ), ed.
Precationes Biblicae …
FIRST EDITION, the title-page printed in red and black within chiaroscuro woodcut border, woodcut on A8v followed by (181) pages of text and colophon all within wide woodcut borders of children playing, hunting and satirical scenes, trophies, grotesques, plants, animals, insects, etc., attributed to Hans Weiditz, wanting the final leaf which is blank except for printer's device, leaves (8), 91, small 8vo, 19C polished calf, gilt lettered spine, edges gilt, with the armorial bookplate of the bibliographer and author Percy L. Babington and the booklabel of T. Connolly, bookseller, Dublin : the last three leaves skilfully repaired and the upper hinge weak, but still a very good copy of a rare book. Adams P 2071 : FM only. "One of the earliest publications of Brunfels and very little known." - Fairfax Murray 100. A collection of biblical texts suitable for use as prayers collected by Brunfels (1488-1534), devoted follower of Luther and a leading botanical authority considered by Linnaeus to be one of the founders of modern botany. A rare book and one of the earliest examples of an illustrated protestant prayer book. In one of the borders is represented a fox in monkish garb selling indulgences to several geese with a treasure chest and papal standard behind : an excellent example of early anti-catholic satire in the art of book illustration. It appeared in German translation in 1531 as "Biblisch Bettbuchlein dar altvatter" and other translations followed. In England Robert Redman published it in 1535 as "Prayers of the Byble". Weiditz (c.1495-c.1536), sometimes known as 'The Petrarch Master" for his woodcut illustrations to Petrarch's "De remediis utriusque fortunae", also illustrated Brunfels' Herbarium. In 1520 he was probably studying at Durer's wookshop.

BARTHOLOMAEUS, Anglicus
De Proprietatibus Rerum
Gothic type, 50 lines & headline to the page, double columns. Rubricated initials. 326 leaves. Small folio (287 x 197 mm.), cont. blind-tooled South German calf over wooden boards (see below for a fuller description). [Heidelberg: Printer of Lindelbach (Heinrich Knoblochtzer), 21 May 1488].pTenth edition of the first important encyclopedia of the Middle Ages; "still important for its information on political geography and its accounts of natural history."-Stillwell, The Awakening Interest in Science during the First Century of Printing 1450-1550, p. 186. This encyclopedia was immensely popular for more than three centuries. Divided into nineteen books, the contents are as follows: "(1) God; (2) angels and demons; (3) psychology; (4-5) physiology; (6) family life, domestic economy; (7) medicine; (8) cosmology, astrology; (9) time divisions; (10) form and matter, elements; (11) air, meteorology; (12) flying creatures; (13) waters and fishes, dolphins, whales; (14) physical geography; (15) political geography, (in 175 chapters; this contains a number of interesting remarks, notes on economic geography, etc.); (16) gems, minerals, metals; (17) trees and herbs; (18) animals; (19) color, odor, savor; food and drink, eggs; weights and measures; musical instruments."-Sarton, II, p. 586. "Book 16 contains 104 short chapters on as many mineral substances as earths, stone, ores, metals, salts, etc., as well as gemstones, the latter often given names that now defy identification of the materials concerned. Gemstones are alabaster, adamante, amethyst, agate, alabandina, beryl, carbuncle, chrysoprase, chalcedony, chrysolite, rock crystal, coral carnelian, hematite, heliotrope, jet, jasper, hyacinth, pearl, marble, onyx, opal, prase, sapphire, emerald, sard, sardonyx, topaz, turquoise; very brief descriptions with comments on curious or medicinal lore associated with each."-Sinkankas, Gemology, p. 70. Bartholomew (fl. 13th cent.), studied at Oxford, Paris, and Magdeburg. This was probably the first book from the second press of Heinrich Knoblochtzer, who moved from Strasbourg to Heidelberg in the mid-1480s. The edition belongs to a group commonly assigned to the eponymous "Printer(s) of Lindelbach." BMC divides this group into two parts and assigns the early productions to the brothers Johann and Conrad Hist and the later ones to Knoblochtzer. Voullieme (Die deutschen Drucker des XV. Jahrhunderts, Berlin 1922, pp. 73-74) gives reasons for identifying the Lindelbach press with Knoblochtzer and attributes all the editions from the group to him, as does Geldner (Die deutschen Inkunabeldrucker, Stuttgart, 1968, I, p. 268). If Voullieme and Geldner are right that the Lindelbach printer's output forms a single group and should not be divided, then Knoblochtzer would be the first Heiderberg printer, but the Bartholomaeus not his first publication; if BMC is correct, Knoblochtzer would be the third printer at Heidelberg and the Bartholomaeus his first work there. Binding: contemporary blind-tooled South-German calf over wooden boards (some wear, head and tail of spine defective): the covers divided by triple fillets into a double frame and central panel, the frames filled with floral rolls, the central panels tooled to an ogival saltire pattern, each compartment filled with a floral tool, "Bartholomei" stamped at top of front cover, an Augsburg binding (Kyriss shop 83: Bogenfries Rolle II); evidence of two clasps; the back pastedown fol. Cxlii from Hieronymus, Buch der Altvater (Augsburg: Anton Sorg, 5 September 1482).
For much of the Middle Ages, the events of the Trojan War and of Odysseus’ return to Ithaca were known in Western Europe only in Latin or vernacular reworkings, but in the mid-fourteenth century, thanks to Petrarch, Homer made a return. The present study sets out to trace the reception of Homer till the end of the sixteenth century. It will follow the first reactions to the Homeric epics and the gradual familiarisation with them that took place, thanks initially to Greek and Italian scholars and later on to Northern European humanists such as Melanchthon. The first part of the work focuses on Homer as a European phenomenon, through an analysis of the various Greek editions, Latin translations, and commentaries produced throughout the continent. The interpretation of the Homeric text, often along confessional lines, will form a central element in this discussion. The second part concentrates on the reception of Homer in France, where Guillaume Budé and Jean Dorat inspired successive generations of writers who were deeply influenced by the Iliad and the Odyssey. Julius Caesar Scaliger’s reshaping of attitudes to Homer concludes this section. The study is completed by a detailed bibliography of Homeric texts printed before 1600.

PETRUS LOMBARDUS

Beautiful well preserved rare Venetian incunable of one the most popular religious works of the Middle Ages which literally became a late bestseller. Probably compiled ca 1260, the "Legenda Sanctorum" soon got universally known as "Legenda Aurea" or "Golden Legend" because "his contemporaries considered it worth its weight in gold" (Catholic Encyclopedia). The medieval hagiologist and archbishop of Genua Jacques de Voragine (ca 1230-1298) divided this collection of fanciful hagiographies of medieval saints into 5 sections: from Advent to Christmas, Christmas to Septuagesima, Septuagesima to Easter, Easter to Octave of Pentecost, Octave of Pentecost to Advent. New typography with large margins and nicely rubricated with typographical printer's device of Octavius Scotus on the verso of the last numbered leaf. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Histories of the Life and Deeds of the Admiral Christopher Columbus attributed to his Son Fernando Colon (Repertorium Columbianum)
Brepols Publishers Y - 2503521924 The Histories of the Life and Deeds of the Admiral Christopher Columbus, attributed to his son Fernando Colon (1488-1539), is one of the most important first-hand sources for Columbus's voyages, and for the intellectual and political context in which they occurred. Originally written in Spanish, it was published in Venice in 1571 in an Italian translation by Alfonso de Ulloa. Drawing on different sources from those used by Las Casas and Oviedo in their contemporary narratives, it provides a comprehensive view of the entire Columbian enterprise, and forms a fitting conclusion to the Repertorium Columbianum. 458p, Repertorium Columbianum 13 (Brepols, 2004). 9782503521923. They are also at different stages in the development of market and financial institutions and of an effective administrative framework. These differences are sufficient to warn against wide-sweeping generalizations about the causes of underdevelopment and all-embracing theoretical models of economic development. But when development economics first came into prominence in the 1950s, there were powerful intellectual and political forces propelling the subject toward such general theoretical models of development and underdevelopment. First, many writers who popularized the subject were frankly motivated by a desire to persuade the developed countries to give more economic aid to the underdeveloped countries, on grounds ranging from humanitarian considerations to considerations of cold-war strategy. Second, there was the reaction of the newly independent underdeveloped countries against their past "colonial economic pattern," which they identified with free trade and primary production for the export market. These countries were eager to accept general theories of economic development that provided a rationalization for their deep-seated desire for rapid industrialization. Third, there was a parallel reaction, at the academic level, against older economic theory, with its emphasis on the efficient allocation of scarce resources and a striving after new and "dynamic" approaches to economic development.|~|"All of these forces combined to produce a crop of theoretical approaches that soon developed into a fairly fixed orthodoxy with its characteristic emphasis on "crash" programmes of investment in both material and human capital, on domestic industrialization, and on government economic planning as the standard ingredients of development policy. These new theories have continued to have a considerable influence on the conventional wisdom in development economics, although in retrospect most of them have turned out to be partial theories. A broad survey of these theories, under three main heads, is given below. It is particularly, relevant to the debate over whether the underdeveloped countries should seek economic development through domestic industrialization or through international trade." (jacket) . PETRUS LOMBARDUS

Quae praetere a hac ultima editione addita sunt, sequens pagella docebit. Basel, heirs N. Bryling, 1575. 8vo. With woodcut printer's device on title-page, double-page woodcut map of Gaul, double-page woodcut map of ancient Spain, 4 full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary vellum.
      - (32), 635, (21) pp. Adams C-62; this edition not BMC STC German, Brunet.Caesar's De Bello Gallico and De Bello Civili in an edition by the Swiss linguist, philosopher and mathematician Henri Glareanus, accompanied by illuminating woodcut maps and illustrations. The Commentarii De Bello Gallico deals with Caesar's Gallic campaigns from 59 till 52 BC. In these years, Caesar fought against invading nations, consolidated Roman rule over the various Gallic tribes and ventured into Britain. The work shows him as a brilliant commander, but its veracity is not in doubt. Book VIII describes the events of 51-50 and was written by A. Hirtius. The second work in this volume De Bello Civili - without a separate title-page and announcement on the title to De Bello Gallico - describes the struggle for power between Caesar and Pompey in 49-48. The present edition was prepared by Henri Glareanus (1488-1563). " (NBG XX, cols 791-793). The text of each book is printed in italic type, followed by Glareanus's notes in roman type. The double-page maps show Gaul and ancient Spain with Roman geographic names for regions, rivers, towns and tribes. There is a full-page woodcut of Caesar's bridge over the Rhine, built in a mere ten days, an illustration of the siege of Avaricum (Bourges), the circumvallations around Alesia (Mount Auxois) and Uxellodunum (Puy d'Issolu) and the fortifications at Massilia (Marseille). These woodcuts focus on the engineering side of Caesar's campaigns and are accompanied by explanations. They were made by J.J. Veronese. At the end is an index (pp. 573-635) with geographic and ethnographic names by Raimundus Marlianus, followed by an index with Roman geographic names and their German equivalent and a general index. A few ink underlinings, p. 275 repaired tear with some loss of text. Good copy in contemporary binding.

With engraved frontispiece, 4 folding engraved views, 11 full-page engraved plates with 2 views each, a full-page engraved plate with 2 scenes in roundels, an engraved vignette on the title-page, and an extra-added contemporary folding engraved portrait of the author. Mid-eighteenth-century sprinkled calf.
      - (36), 304, (28) pp. Nijhoff & V. Hattum 331; Muller, Portretten 6091. First edition of a laudatory verse account of the Amsterdam city walls and the canals that run alongside them, with the city gates, weigh stations, etc., as well as the churches, monasteries and workshops in the neighborhoods outside the walls, all beautifully illustrated with 28 views of the city, its buildings, boats in the canals and river, the surrounding polder land, etc., finely engraved by Jan Goeree, including the title vignette and allegorical frontispiece. The coverage is both contemporary and historical, and the extensive notes to the verse text add much factual detail, indexed at the end. Most of the views are based on drawings then in the collection of the jurist Brouërius van Nidek. Two exceptions are the large general view from the barge canal that connects Amsterdam to Haarlem, rendered from life, and the large general view from the river Amstel, after a painting by A. Stork. The preliminaries include a verse dedication to D. Trip, a note to the reader, 22 pages of verses in praise of the book by nine different poets, and a list of Willink's earlier publications. The two scenes in medal-like roundels, engraved by P. v. Abeele, show Count Willem granting the city of Amsterdam a coat of arms in 1342 and the Emperor Maximilian adding the crown in 1488. The extra-added portrait of the author (17.5 x 13 cm), drawn by G. Lubienietzki in 1722, includes his coat of arms and a verse by D. van Hoogstraten.Daniël Willink (1676-1722) was an Amsterdam wine merchant best known for his various publications about his native city. Jan Goeree (1670-1731), one of Amsterdam's leading artist-engravers, is best known for his finely engraved book illustrations. The portrait of the author, made in the year of his death, appeared in Willink's posthumous Lustplaats Groot Heerema (Nijhoff & V. Hattum 337).With a tiny tear along the fold of the extra-added portrait, running a half centimeter into the background, a few creases in one of the folding views, and an occasional minor spot, but generally in fine condition, with the paper still crisp. Binding very good, with some cracks in and around the hinges and a small chip at the head of the spine. A fine copy, with beautiful views of Amsterdam and its architecture.

MAGNUS ALBERTUS
PHYSICA (LIBER PHISICORUM, SIVE AUDITUS PHISICI ALBERTI MAGNI)
Esemplare interamente rubricato in rosso. Legatura usurata in piena pelle su assicelle in legno; dorso rifatto anticamente.
One of the core texts of the Dutch Devotio Moderna. Tractatus de spiritualibus ascensionibus.
(Basel, Johannes Amerbach & Johannes Petri, 1488 or 1489).. Sm.8vo. Modern vellum, title written on spine. All initials supplied by hand in red or blue, rubricated throughout. (68) lvs. Collation: a-h8, i4.. Probably the third edition of this famous mystical and devotional work by Gerardus Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398), one of the most well-known pupils of Geert Grote, the father of the Dutch 'Moderne Devotie' (Devotia Moderna). The first edition was printed in Deventer, together with Zutphen, the birthplace of Gerardus Zerbolt, in the center of the homeland of the Dutch Devotio Moderna. First attributed to the printer Jacob van Breda, the edition is now in the name of Richard Paffraet and is dated 1483-85. The second edition was published in Cologne by Ulrich Zell, ca. 1488. Our edition is dated 'not after 1489' and so the edition Strassburg, Johann Prüss, ca. 1488 may be earlier than our edition. The treatise De spiritualibus ascensionibus is a very popular devotional work, the most important van Gerard's works, and printed many times until well into the 16th century. It describes in 70 chapters the various steps one has to go to rise from this vale of tears to a mental state of paradisical innocence, at lenght treated by Van Rooij in his interesting thesis. On the last 4 pages is added a text "De quatuor in quibus incipientes deo servire debent esse cauti si perficere volunt", which is the first chapter of book II of David van Augsburg's Profectus a well-known manual for novices, sometimes regarded as the last chapter of Gerard's work. The text is finely printed in a small "lettre batarde", with 30 lines to a page, and with all initials most carefully and professionally supplied by hand in red and blue, rubricated in red and in blue throughout. Fine copy, with ample margins. FILELFO, Francesco.
Or[ati]ones: & nonulla alia op[er]a.
[Colophon:] Impressum Brixiae [Brescia]: per Jacobum Britannicum, 18th June 1488. 4to, 183 leaves (of 184, lacking the last blank). Roman letter, 38 lines, spaces for initials with guide letters, printer’s woodcut device at end. Holes in the margins of a1, a2, and z7 neatly mended, first two leaves a bit soiled, a few small and diminishing wormholes in the first leaves of text, occasional faint dampstains in upper margin. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards (head of spine torn). Second edition. A collection of orations and other works by the eminent Italian humanist Francesco Filelfo (1398–1481), with an appended medical tract by Galen, Ad medicinam introductorium. This is only the second appearance of Galen’s text, which was first printed with the first edition of Filefo’s Orationes in 1484 (see Stillwell III, 376). Only one of Galen’s individual works was published separately before 1501; those that were published in incunable editions, numbering about twelve titles, appeared with other works, as here. Filelfo was one of the great humanists and literary figures of his age, destined to continue the work of Petrarch and others in recovering forgotten classical, especially Greek, culture. “Filelfo deserves commemoration among the great humanists of the Italian renaissance, not for the beauty of his style, not for the elevation of his genius, not for the accuracy of his learning, but for his energy, and for his complete adaptation to the times in which he lived… And in this work of collection and instruction Filelfo excelled,…acting as a pioneer for men like Poliziano and Erasmus…[but he himself]…has left nothing to posterity which the world would not very willingly let die” (Ency. Brit.) BMC VII, 975. Klebs 403.1 (giving the title as Orationes et opuscula).

Augsburg, Erhart Ratdolt für Theobald Feger in Budapest, 3. Juni 1488. Type 7..

Lectura super quinque libros Decretalium. Liber I (GWM 47787, HC 12315).
Basel, Johann Amerbach, 1488. Type 1, 4, 11.. A number of four- to 13-line white-on-black woodcut initials and MORE THAN 400 FREQUENTLY VERY DELIGHTFUL WOODCUTS 19 OF THEM LARGE the initials and cuts ALL COLORED BY AN EARLY HAND. Front flyleaves with two emblematic engravings and a woodcut of an astrologer neatly pasted in. Rear pastedown with multiple inscriptions by Georgius Amyas (one of these dated 1565) as well as inscriptions by the English physician John Bayell (16th century) by Henry White of Lichfield (dated 1805) and by Thomas Lister / Astrologer / Boston / 1845 (see below); front pastedown with circular bookplate of Count Oswald von Seilern. Leather slightly scuffed and abraded but the binding solid and pleasing. Text somewhat soiled and thumbed (as expected with a frequently referenced early illustrated book like this one) title page with small waterstain at top (where an old owner's signature has been washed away) first two gatherings with small elongated wormhole in text (usually in tables with no loss but occasionally touching a letter or number on a page) two marginal tears (one neatly repaired with old paper) two other tears within woodcuts (one a small hole with minimal loss the other a closed tear or paper flaw with no loss) lower blank corner of one leaf replaced (before Lister owned the book ca. 1845) one quire with minor rust stain at inner margin other trivial defects but still very good internally the leaves relatively fresh with very ample margins and with the original naïve coloring very pleasing. Goff A-711; BMC II, 382; Stillwell (""Science"") 51; Honeyman 94; Klebs 375.1; Houzeau-Lancaster 3252; Dorbon-Ainé 104. This is the first printing of a significant work of astrology by Johannes Angelus (Johann Engel 1463-1512) as well as a rare incunable of considerable charm in any state but especially with its woodcuts hand colored as they are here. In Stillwell's words the book is an important astrological work containing tables of the sign and degree of the ascendent for each hour and minute [along with] . . . equations of the astrological houses . . . and illustrations showing the potential occupations and types of persons born under given auspices. Stillwell indicates that the work was not only important but also somehow unconventional or threatening enough to incur a partial condemnation by the Faculty of Theology of Paris. Painted in our copy in autumnal shades of chestnut gold green and brown the 19 large woodcuts showing the seven planets in their chariots and the 12 signs of the zodiac were reused from Ratdolt's 1482 publication of Hyginus. Similarly colored the smaller woodcuts appear to be original with this work. These illustrate the 96 pages devoted to predicting a person's character by birthdate. At the beginning of each section we have at the middle of the page a small zodiacal sign above which are three figures representing the three ten-day periods governed by the sign. For Sagittarius for example we learn from the superscriptions at the top of the page that the first third is under the influence of Mercury and is warlike the second is under the Moon and timid and the third is under Saturn and willful. Following each zodiac sign are 30 emblematic characters (360 such characters in all) representing horoscopes each surrounded by 12 triangles marked by zodiac signs the triangles fitting together to form a square frame around each emblematic figure. The figures are dressed in late Medieval garb and often are shown going about their daily business churning butter eating bread or harvesting. For each there is a short Latin phrase describing the figure and another interpreting its significance for the person whose horoscope is represented. Johann Engel was born in Bavaria and studied in Vienna under a leading astronomer Regiomontanus. He settled in Augsburg where he spent time practicing medicine and casting horoscopes. He was learned in astronomy as well as astrology (although without the insights of his contemporary Copernicus) and edited the first printing of Albumasar's De Magnis Coniunctionibus. Nearly as delightful as and more revealing than the colored woodcuts are the translations made by our Boston astrologer Thomas Lister in the top and bottom margins. Quite a number of horoscopes predict laziness and some carry more dire predictions; in Lister's words one unfortunate person born at the wrong time will be a thief another will be unfortunate on the water and a third will be a quarrelsome man and spiteful as a dog. At the same time a good many horoscopes predict happiness in varying degrees. We have not been able to identify our self-styled(?) astrologer though we believe his handwriting to be American suggesting that his stated hometown of Boston is in Massachusetts not in Lincolnshire. Lister is perhaps more adept as an astrologer than as a Latinist for although he usually translates the Latin correctly he not infrequently takes liberties and occasionally he is just plain at odds with linguistic reality. In addition to ours ABPC lists just three complete copies of Astrolabium at auction since 1979 and only one colored copy in the last 30 years. $45000

MAGNUS ALBERTUS
PHYSICA (LIBER PHISICORUM, SIVE AUDITUS PHISICI ALBERTI MAGNI) IN FINE: IMPRESSUM VENETIIS JOANNEM DE FORLIVIO ET GREGORIUM FRATRES. ANNO DOMINI MDCCCLXXXVIII DIE VIII JANUARII. VENEZIA IOANNEM DE FORLIVIO ET GREGORIUM FRATRES 1488
1 volume in-folio (317 mm x 214 mm) 1 ff bb (non coevo), 168 ff nn, 1 ff bb (non coevo). Esemplare interamente rubricato in rosso. Legatura usurata in piena pelle su assicelle in legno; dorso rifatto anticamente.

RATIONALE DIVINORUM / Bound With / MANIPULUS CURATOR(UM) by Guido de Monte Rocherii / With / ARS PREDICANDI by Jacques Fusigna.
[Printer of the 1483 Jordanus de Quedlinburg (Georg Husner)], Strassburg: Sept. 1, 1488 / / Johan Koelhoff, Lubeck Colonie [Cologne]: 1487. 1488, Hardcover Three works in one. 1. Rationale Divinorum. 264 leaves. Title page mounted, with loss of blank portion. First signature with damp damage, but no real loss of text. 2. Manipulus curator(um). 68 leaves. Some light marginal damping. Some marginal worm holes. 3. Ars predicandi. 16 leaves (last blank) printed continuously with the preceding work. Last few leaves wormed and damped with some slight loss. Gothic Latin text. Double column. Folio. 215 x 310 mm. The original, highly decorated leather boards are preserved over a modern leather binding. The boards are blind tooled with: sixteen small stamps showing a rampant lion within a diamond frames; ten small madonna stamps in circular frames; and a lettered mari(a) ribbon stamp repeated over forty times. Though much of the decoration has perished, and what remains is worn - this is a wonderful survival of a fifteenth century binding. When all the prescriptions for celebration of the liturgy are gathered into a single volume, that book is termed an ordinal. If a book contains only the directions for sacraments administered by a bishop, it is called a pontifical. Over time, the ceremonial was studied by authors who attempted to explain its allegory and codify its practice; and the most complete of such treatises, the Rationale divinorum officiorum, was composed in 1286 by Guilelmus Durandus, Bishop of Mende [Ca. 1230-1296], also known as Duranti or Durantis. He was born at Puimisson, near Beziers, of a noble family of Languedoc. He studied law at Bologna, especially with Bernardus of Parma, and about 1264 was teaching canon law with success at Modena. Clement IV., his fellow-countryman, called him to the pontifical court as a chaplain and auditor of the palace, and in 1274 he accompanied Clement's successor Gregory X. to the council of Lyons, the constitutions of which he drew up, along with some other prelates. In the midst of the struggles between Guelfs and Ghibellines, Durandus successfully defended the papal territories, both by diplomacy and by arms. Honorius IV. retained him in his offices, and although elected bishop of Mende in 1286, he remained in Italy (with a few absences) until his death. His principal work is the 'Speculum judiciae' - a general explanation of civil, criminal and canonical procedure, and contracts. Scarcely less important is this 'Rationale Divinorum' - a liturgical treatise written in Italy before 1286, on the origin and symbolic sense of the Christian ritual. It presents a picture of the liturgy of the 13th century in the West, studied in its various forms, its traditional sources, and its relation to the church buildings and furniture. It is one of the main authorities on Western liturgies. The 'Manipulus Curatorum' of Guy de Montrocher and the appended 'Ars Predicandi' are among the most important of the practical manuals written for the use of the priests in the middle ages. They were "read to death" by generations of priests, which helps explain the incredible scarcity of the edition offered here. References: 1. Goff D 434; BMC I 138; Walsh 236; GKW 9135; Hain 6494. 2. BARTHOLOMAEUS, Anglicus.
De Proprietatibus Rerum.
Gothic type, 50 lines & headline to the page, double columns. Rubricated initials. 326 leaves. Small folio (287 x 197 mm.), cont. blind-tooled South German calf over wooden boards (see below for a fuller description). [Heidelberg: Printer of Lindelbach (Heinrich Knoblochtzer), 21 May 1488]. Tenth edition of the first important encyclopedia of the Middle Ages; "still important for its information on political geography and its accounts of natural history."-Stillwell, The Awakening Interest in Science during the First Century of Printing 1450-1550, p. Voulliéme (Die deutschen Drucker des XV. 268). If Voulliéme and Geldner are right that the Lindelbach printer's output forms a single group and should not be divided, then Knoblochtzer would be the first Heiderberg printer, but the Bartholomaeus not his first publication; if BMC is correct, Knoblochtzer would be the third printer at Heidelberg and the Bartholomaeus his first work there. Cxlii from Hieronymus, Buch der Altväter (Augsburg: Anton Sorg, 5 September 1482). Provenance: Frater Johannes: contemporary inscription on DD8r -- Ziegler: 16th-century inscription on F3v -- Seitenstetten, Benedictines: armorial inkstamps on 1/1r and DD8r -- André L. Simon, Bibliotheca Bacchica bookplate. BMC, III, 670. GKW 3411. Goff B-139. Klebs 149.3. Simon, Bibliotheca Bacchica, 19b. Simon, Bibliotheca Gastronomica, 173. Thorndike, II, pp. 401-35.
