Index.|~|"The developing and underdeveloped countries are a very mixed collection of countries. They differ widely in area, population density, and natural resources. They are also at different stages in the development of market and financial institutions and of an effective administrative framework. These differences are sufficient to warn against wide-sweeping generalizations about the causes of underdevelopment and all-embracing theoretical models of economic development. But when development economics first came into prominence in the 1950s, there were powerful intellectual and political forces propelling the subject toward such general theoretical models of development and underdevelopment. First, many writers who popularized the subject were frankly motivated by a desire to persuade the developed countries to give more economic aid to the underdeveloped countries, on grounds ranging from humanitarian considerations to considerations of cold-war strategy. Second, there was the reaction of the newly independent underdeveloped countries against their past "colonial economic pattern," which they identified with free trade and primary production for the export market. These countries were eager to accept general theories of economic development that provided a rationalization for their deep-seated desire for rapid industrialization. Third, there was a parallel reaction, at the academic level, against older economic theory, with its emphasis on the efficient allocation of scarce resources and a striving after new and "dynamic" approaches to economic development.|~|"All of these forces combined to produce a crop of theoretical approaches that soon developed into a fairly fixed orthodoxy with its characteristic emphasis on "crash" programmes of investment in both material and human capital, on domestic industrialization, and on government economic planning as the standard ingredients of development policy. These new theories have continued to have a considerable influence on the conventional wisdom in development economics, although in retrospect most of them have turned out to be partial theories. A broad survey of these theories, under three main heads, is given below. It is particularly, relevant to the debate over whether the underdeveloped countries should seek economic development through domestic industrialization or through international trade." (jacket) . PETRUS LOMBARDUS

MAXIMILIAN I Emperor,
Letter addressed to Pope Innocent VIII. and with the signature of Maximilian himself. Dated: Mecklenberg, 6 October
      - Single folio, written on vellum, 24 long lines. Folded and addressed on the back: "Sanctissimo Domino nostro Pape". Size: 323 x 284mm. 1488. An important letter of Maximilian I written to Pope Innocent VIII which highlights the hold that the Pope held over the Holy Roman Empire; signed "MAX" with paraph. The letter shows the concerns of Maximilian regarding the lack of confirmation by Pope Innocent VIII of the Preces Primariae; this was the law or right of the Holy Roman Empire to award benefices in ecclesiastical institiutions to his preferred candidates, and was subject to papal authority. The letter is dated two years after Maximilian had been crowned king of the Romans and shows his impatience that this issue had not been dealt with. The Hapsburg family held the title of Roman king, but to become the Holy Roman Empire it was necessary to have a coronation undertaken by the Pope which often meant waiting for the right moment. Frederick III had been made king in 1442 but did not become Emperor until 1452, while Maxililian was crowned king in 1486, and assumed the title of Emperor in 1508 without formal act of coronation although this was later accepted by Julius II. This system thus bound the Hapsburg family to the Catholic faith, and the family traditionally supported thge Catholic Church. Maximilian writes that he realises that his holiness is very busy, but he is concerned about a matter which very much concerns his honour and status. He writes: "We certify to the same [Holiness] that nothing at this time so much concerns my honour as that the "Preces" be granted, throughout the entire Empire and the dominions subject to my power from the day of my coronation, should be ratified". The other matter in the letter is Maximilian's strong desire for Bishop Luke of Sebenico to be promoted to Cardinal; this refers to Lucas de Tollentis, bishop of Sebenico in Dalmatia from 1470 to 1491, whose claims Maximilian had promoted for some time, but the plea clearly fell on deaf ears.

CAESAR, Caius Julius.
Caii Iulii Caesaris Commentariorum. Libri VIII. Quibus Adiecimus suis in locus D. Heinrici Glareani doctissimas Annotationes: multo quam antehac nunquam emendatiores editi. Quae praetere a hac ultima editione addita sunt, sequens pagella docebit. Basel, heirs N. Bryling, 1575. 8vo. With woodcut printer's device on title-page, double-page woodcut map of Gaul, double-page woodcut map of ancient Spain, 4 full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary vellum.
      - (32), 635, (21) pp. Adams C-62; this edition not BMC STC German, Brunet.Caesar's De Bello Gallico and De Bello Civili in an edition by the Swiss linguist, philosopher and mathematician Henri Glareanus, accompanied by illuminating woodcut maps and illustrations. The Commentarii De Bello Gallico deals with Caesar's Gallic campaigns from 59 till 52 BC. In these years, Caesar fought against invading nations, consolidated Roman rule over the various Gallic tribes and ventured into Britain. The work shows him as a brilliant commander, but its veracity is not in doubt. Book VIII describes the events of 51-50 and was written by A. Hirtius. The second work in this volume De Bello Civili - without a separate title-page and announcement on the title to De Bello Gallico - describes the struggle for power between Caesar and Pompey in 49-48. The present edition was prepared by Henri Glareanus (1488-1563). " (NBG XX, cols 791-793). The text of each book is printed in italic type, followed by Glareanus's notes in roman type. The double-page maps show Gaul and ancient Spain with Roman geographic names for regions, rivers, towns and tribes. There is a full-page woodcut of Caesar's bridge over the Rhine, built in a mere ten days, an illustration of the siege of Avaricum (Bourges), the circumvallations around Alesia (Mount Auxois) and Uxellodunum (Puy d'Issolu) and the fortifications at Massilia (Marseille). These woodcuts focus on the engineering side of Caesar's campaigns and are accompanied by explanations. They were made by J.J. Veronese. At the end is an index (pp. 573-635) with geographic and ethnographic names by Raimundus Marlianus, followed by an index with Roman geographic names and their German equivalent and a general index. A few ink underlinings, p. 275 repaired tear with some loss of text. Good copy in contemporary binding.

With engraved frontispiece, 4 folding engraved views, 11 full-page engraved plates with 2 views each, a full-page engraved plate with 2 scenes in roundels, an engraved vignette on the title-page, and an extra-added contemporary folding engraved portrait of the author. Mid-eighteenth-century sprinkled calf.
      - (36), 304, (28) pp. Nijhoff & V. Hattum 331; Muller, Portretten 6091. First edition of a laudatory verse account of the Amsterdam city walls and the canals that run alongside them, with the city gates, weigh stations, etc., as well as the churches, monasteries and workshops in the neighborhoods outside the walls, all beautifully illustrated with 28 views of the city, its buildings, boats in the canals and river, the surrounding polder land, etc., finely engraved by Jan Goeree, including the title vignette and allegorical frontispiece. The coverage is both contemporary and historical, and the extensive notes to the verse text add much factual detail, indexed at the end. Most of the views are based on drawings then in the collection of the jurist Brouërius van Nidek. Two exceptions are the large general view from the barge canal that connects Amsterdam to Haarlem, rendered from life, and the large general view from the river Amstel, after a painting by A. Stork. The preliminaries include a verse dedication to D. Trip, a note to the reader, 22 pages of verses in praise of the book by nine different poets, and a list of Willink's earlier publications. The two scenes in medal-like roundels, engraved by P. v. Abeele, show Count Willem granting the city of Amsterdam a coat of arms in 1342 and the Emperor Maximilian adding the crown in 1488. The extra-added portrait of the author (17.5 x 13 cm), drawn by G. Lubienietzki in 1722, includes his coat of arms and a verse by D. van Hoogstraten.Daniël Willink (1676-1722) was an Amsterdam wine merchant best known for his various publications about his native city. Jan Goeree (1670-1731), one of Amsterdam's leading artist-engravers, is best known for his finely engraved book illustrations. The portrait of the author, made in the year of his death, appeared in Willink's posthumous Lustplaats Groot Heerema (Nijhoff & V. Hattum 337).With a tiny tear along the fold of the extra-added portrait, running a half centimeter into the background, a few creases in one of the folding views, and an occasional minor spot, but generally in fine condition, with the paper still crisp. Binding very good, with some cracks in and around the hinges and a small chip at the head of the spine. A fine copy, with beautiful views of Amsterdam and its architecture.

MAGNUS ALBERTUS
PHYSICA (LIBER PHISICORUM, SIVE AUDITUS PHISICI ALBERTI MAGNI)
Esemplare interamente rubricato in rosso. Legatura usurata in piena pelle su assicelle in legno; dorso rifatto anticamente.
One of the core texts of the Dutch Devotio Moderna. Tractatus de spiritualibus ascensionibus.
(Basel, Johannes Amerbach & Johannes Petri, 1488 or 1489).. Sm.8vo. Modern vellum, title written on spine. All initials supplied by hand in red or blue, rubricated throughout. (68) lvs. Collation: a-h8, i4.. Probably the third edition of this famous mystical and devotional work by Gerardus Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398), one of the most well-known pupils of Geert Grote, the father of the Dutch 'Moderne Devotie' (Devotia Moderna). The first edition was printed in Deventer, together with Zutphen, the birthplace of Gerardus Zerbolt, in the center of the homeland of the Dutch Devotio Moderna. First attributed to the printer Jacob van Breda, the edition is now in the name of Richard Paffraet and is dated 1483-85. The second edition was published in Cologne by Ulrich Zell, ca. 1488. Our edition is dated 'not after 1489' and so the edition Strassburg, Johann Prüss, ca. 1488 may be earlier than our edition. The treatise De spiritualibus ascensionibus is a very popular devotional work, the most important van Gerard's works, and printed many times until well into the 16th century. It describes in 70 chapters the various steps one has to go to rise from this vale of tears to a mental state of paradisical innocence, at lenght treated by Van Rooij in his interesting thesis. On the last 4 pages is added a text "De quatuor in quibus incipientes deo servire debent esse cauti si perficere volunt", which is the first chapter of book II of David van Augsburg's Profectus a well-known manual for novices, sometimes regarded as the last chapter of Gerard's work. The text is finely printed in a small "lettre batarde", with 30 lines to a page, and with all initials most carefully and professionally supplied by hand in red and blue, rubricated in red and in blue throughout. Fine copy, with ample margins. PETRUS LOMBARDUS

FILELFO, Francesco.
Or[ati]ones: & nonulla alia op[er]a.
[Colophon:] Impressum Brixiae [Brescia]: per Jacobum Britannicum, 18th June 1488. 4to, 183 leaves (of 184, lacking the last blank). Roman letter, 38 lines, spaces for initials with guide letters, printer’s woodcut device at end. Holes in the margins of a1, a2, and z7 neatly mended, first two leaves a bit soiled, a few small and diminishing wormholes in the first leaves of text, occasional faint dampstains in upper margin. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards (head of spine torn). Second edition. A collection of orations and other works by the eminent Italian humanist Francesco Filelfo (1398–1481), with an appended medical tract by Galen, Ad medicinam introductorium. This is only the second appearance of Galen’s text, which was first printed with the first edition of Filefo’s Orationes in 1484 (see Stillwell III, 376). Only one of Galen’s individual works was published separately before 1501; those that were published in incunable editions, numbering about twelve titles, appeared with other works, as here. Filelfo was one of the great humanists and literary figures of his age, destined to continue the work of Petrarch and others in recovering forgotten classical, especially Greek, culture. “Filelfo deserves commemoration among the great humanists of the Italian renaissance, not for the beauty of his style, not for the elevation of his genius, not for the accuracy of his learning, but for his energy, and for his complete adaptation to the times in which he lived… And in this work of collection and instruction Filelfo excelled,…acting as a pioneer for men like Poliziano and Erasmus…[but he himself]…has left nothing to posterity which the world would not very willingly let die” (Ency. Brit.) BMC VII, 975. Klebs 403.1 (giving the title as Orationes et opuscula).

Chronica Hungarorum (GWm 14775, Hain 15516). Blatt mit Holzschnitt von Martin Schongauer.
Augsburg, Erhart Ratdolt für Theobald Feger in Budapest, 3. Juni 1488. Type 7.. CAESAR, Caius Julius.
Caii Iulii Caesaris Commentariorum. Libri VIII. Quibus Adiecimus suis in locus D. Heinrici Glareani doctissimas Annotationes: multo quam antehac nunquam emendatiores editi. Quae praetere a hac ultima editione addita sunt, sequens pagella docebit. Basel, heirs N. Bryling, 1575. 8vo. With woodcut printer's device on title-page, double-page woodcut map of Gaul, double-page woodcut map of ancient Spain, 4 full-page woodcut illustrations. Contemporary vellum.
(32), 635, (21) pp. Adams C-62; this edition not BMC STC German, Brunet .Caesar's De Bello Gallico and De Bello Civili in an edition by the Swiss linguist, philosopher and mathematician Henri Glareanus, accompanied by illuminating woodcut maps and illustrations.
