BOETHIUS, Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus

De consolatione philosophiae.
Nuremberg Anton Koberger 1486. Folio. [ 33 x 22 cm.] (74) ff. (1, 73 and 74 blank) (ie. (*6), a-b8,c-h6/8, i10). Table in two columns. 72 lines of introduction. Text surrounded by commentary. Types: 165, head-lines (numbers of books); 92 (83). Capital spaces, mostly with guide-letters in the commentary. Bound in contemporary wooden boards backed with alum-tawed deerskin stained pale pink (color remaining only on turn-ins), blind-stamped with fleur-de-lys garland on front and large rosettes on rear board, printer’s waste pastedowns, chased brass catchplates (without clasps), title written on front board in contemporary hand, later paper spine labels (leather worn, boards slightly wormed, front flyleaf detached) Some worming affecting text (c. 2 letters) throughout, waterstaining in upper margin, annotated throughout in a contemporary hand, including title and note on the author on flyleaf. Provenance: annotated throughout in a contemporary hand, including title and note on the author on flyleaf—Bregenz (Tyrol), Benedictine monastery: 17th-c. inscription on opening page (Ex Bibliotheca Monasterii Brigantini) Rare Koberger edition (reprint of 1483) and fine copy of one of the most widely-read contemplative texts of the Middle Ages. According to the ISTC, Koberger produced editions of Boethius (ca. 480-524 AD) in 1473, 1476, 1483, 1486 and 1495. The extensive printed commentary included in these editions has been attributed to Thomas Aquinas (including in the contemporary annotation on the flyleaf), but more recently to the Welsh priest Thomas Wallensis. Boethius wrote his Consolation of Philosophy in 524 AD while awaiting execution. During this year of imprisonment, he examined his understanding of the world without explicitly referring to his faith. Nonetheless, he was considered a Christian martyr and his work became de rigeur by the late fifteenth century. "To acquire a taste for it is almost to become naturalised in the Middle Ages." Such was the praise for The Consolation of Philosophy granted . by C.S. Lewis . From the Carolingian epoch to the end of the Middle Ages and beyond, this was the most widely copied work of secular literature in Europe. It was translated into Old English by King Alfred, into Old French by Jean de Meun, into Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer and into Elizabethan English by Queen Elizabeth herself—to list only the most celebrated versions." (O’Donnell). Koberger evidently valued Boethius’ text highly as well, for the first book he ever printed (in 1473) was the first bilingual edition of the text (Latin and German). This copy has been read thoroughly. There are extensive annotations in both the text and commentary by one or two contemporary hands, including underlining and numerous diagrams (an animated assortment of hands, eyes, arrows, etc.). The notes particularly emphasize Boethius’ description of the vagaries of Fortune (book 2), and appears to agree with the conclusions of the pseudo-Aquinas gloss by evoking the Trinity."Anton Koberger of Nuremberg, perhaps the most powerful publisher of his day . . . brought out between 1473 and 1513 at least 236 books, most of them of the first importance." Lefevre, 124. He is also known for facilitating the use of images with text for the massive achievement of the heavily illustrated Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), and also produced Bibles and spectacular devotional texts including the Schatzbehalter (1491). *Goff B-781; BMC II, 430; cf. PMM 34. O’Donnell, Preface to A Consolation of Philosophy, 1990. Illustrated by (ca. 480-ca. 524).

Faksimile, Bibliophilia

MATTHAEUS COLLACIUS

OPUSCULA.
VENEZIA BERNARDINO RIZO DA NOVARA 1486 In-4; pp. (28). Legatura in cartonato settecentesco.

MALLEUS MALEFICARUM: The hammer of Witches
CUP. 2 volumes. MINT HBK 1,000 pages. The Malleus Maleficarum is the most famous early modern text on witches and witch hunting. Often known as Hammer of Witches, the Malleus consists of descriptions of the practices of witchcraft together with recommended methods of exterminating them. It was republished twenty-six times and remained a standard work on witchcraft for centuries. Yet this key text has never before been available in a reliable modern scholarly edition. This fully annotated edition is based on the first edition of 1486-7 and presents the Latin text together with a full textual apparatus. An extensive introduction discusses the authorship, method of composition, and intellectual background of the work. The second volume provides the only accurate English translation available, together with detailed explanatory notes.

[Hortus sanitatis, German].

Gart der Gesundheit.
Augsburg, Hans Schönsperger d. Ä., 5. VI. 1486. Folio (194:271 mm). Gothic type, 2 cols., 42 lines.257 unn. ff. [a-z8, A-D8, E6, F8, G-H6, J8-1 (lacks last blank f.)]. With page-size woodcut in bright original color on f. 1 verso, 394 contemp. coloured woodcuts in the text, and several red lombardic initials. Contemporary brown half calf over wooden boards, richly blindstamped and with brass fittings for two clasps on front cover. One of the earliest and rarest editions (the third according to Nissen, in fact probably the fourth) of the work first printed by Schöffer in Mainz in 1485, regarded as a "landmark in the history of botanical illustration, one which marked perhaps the greatest single step ever made in that art" (Hunt I, 5). Contains medical cures (in alphabetical order) drawn from plants, occasionally also from animals and minerals. The index is sorted by illnesses, thus facilitating the search for the proper ointments. All woodcuts were cut specially for this edition and were reused in several editions to follow. - Very rare; German auction records since 1950 list only two entries for a single, exceedingly incomplete copy; KVK records 5 copies in German libraries, only 1 of which is complete. Apparently intensively used copy with contemp. ms. marginalia throughout (occasionally slightly touched during 18th-c. rebinding) concerning the preparation of the various plants as well as their effect and the application of the ointments thus prepared. Occasional waterstaining (stronger in quires g, h, and y, which also show a few restored holes and tears in the paper). No loss to text or image (except ff. g6f., h1f., y3: slight loss to individual letters in up to four lines). Contemp. coloring slightly faded; 17 other ff. with contemp. restorations to wide blank margin. Binding from the shop of the Master of the Regensburg Half Bindings (Schunke II, 222): the spine is covered with that shop's characteristic mosaic of square stamps (Schunke 13); the covers are decorated with rhombic tendril designs (Schunke 127) and fleurs-de-lis (Schunke 311). Altogether a good, clean, and complete copy in attractive contemporary colour. GW M09754. Hain 8951*. Goff G-100. ISTC ig00100000. Sudhoff (Dt. med. Inkunabeln) 69. Choulant (Graph. Incunabeln) 6. AGRIPPA, HENRI CORNEILLE E PETRUS DE ABANO

- A.L. Caillet. Manuel bib. des sciences psychiques ou occultes. Paris. 1912, v.1., no. 97. E. Weller, Die Falschen u. fingirten Druckorte, lists imprint as fictious but does not assign a correct one. OPERA IN BUONO STATO DI CONSERVAZIONE. RARISSIMA e ancora piu' rara in queste condizioni di conservazione. GOOD COPY. VERY RARE.

Urkundenbuch zur Geschichte der Deutschen in Siebenbürgen.Herausgegeben von Franz Zimmermann und Carl Werner. 3 Bände. Hermannstadt 1892-1902. (Reprint:).
Hildesheim: Olms Vlg. 2008. XL/2144 S. und 16 Tafeln. Ln.

Folio (194:271 mm). Gothic type, 2 cols., 42 lines. 257 unn. One of the earliest and rarest editions (the third according to Nissen, in fact probably the fourth) of the work first printed by Schoeffer in Mainz in 1485, regarded as a "landmark in the history of botanical illustration, one which marked perhaps the greatest single step ever made in that art" (Hunt I, 5). Binding from the shop of the Master of the Regensburg Half Bindings (Schunke II, 222): the spine is covered with that shop's characteristic mosaic of square stamps (Schunke 13); the covers are decorated with rhombic tendril designs (Schunke 127) and fleurs-de-lis (Schunke 311). .PICCOLOMINI, ANDREAS SYLVIUS.

EPISTOLAE FAMILIARES.NUREMBERGAE, ANTON KOBERGER,XVI KALEND. AUGUSTI [17 LUGLIO] 1486.
Mackay, Christopher S., (editor and translator)

Malleus Maleficarum 2 Volume Set
The Malleus Maleficarum is the most famous early modern text on witches and witch hunting. Often known as 'Hammer of Witches', the Malleus consists of descriptions of the practices of witchcraft together with recommended methods of exterminating them. This important edition makes this vital text accessible to scholars of the period and offers extraordinary insights into the attitudes and prejudices inspired by the fear of witches. Two-volume set comprising an edition of the Latin text and a new English translation. Features an extensive introduction and explanatory notes giving full background as well as analysis. Contents: Volume I: General introduction; Introduction to the Latin text; Malleus Maleficarum; Appendix. Volume II: Notes about usages in the translation; Malleus Maleficarum: English translation.       [Toulouse, Heinrich Mayer, 1486] in-4. 256ff. n. ch.
