Hobson, G. D
Blind-Stamped Panels in the English Book-Trade, C. 1485-1555
London, The Bibliographical Society, 1944. Small 4to, 111 pp, Original Printed Wrappers. Illustrated with Sepia Tone Photo Plates, Later gilt buckram. Library cancel else fine. Supplement to the Bibliographical Society's Transactions; No.17. From the introduction: "Towards the end of the fifteenth century the decoration of European leather bindings was changed by three novelties-the invention of the roll, the introduction of gold-tooling, and the diffusion of the panel stamp. The panel made it possible to get pictorial effects hitherto unobtainable except by the cuir-ciselé method, and it radically altered the technique of binding decoration. Small tools, whether used in blind or gold, have a tang at the back which fits into a wooden handle, and are impressed by hand; the panel has a flat back, is attached to a block, and must be stamped with a press. Hence a binder who used panels required a blocking-press-a much larger and more expensive machine than the simple instruments which were all that he had needed previously; hence too, the use of a press led to the distinction between hand work and machine work-between tooled and stamped bindings-between la reliure à petits fers and la reliure industrielle et commerciale-which runs through all the later history of the craft. " Contents: Introductory; The First Period: 1485-1509; Appendix I: The Binding of the Corpus Christi College Speculum; The Second Period: 1510-1535; Ruwe, Spierinck & Reynes; Panels with the Royal Arms; 3. Other signed panels; 4. Unsigned panels; Appendix II: The Miracle of St. Nicholas and the Très Clerici; Appendix III: Jean Norvins and his panels; The Third Period: 1535-1555; Appendix IV: Thomas Godfray and the Binder F. G. or T. G.; Some Problems and Conclusions; Appendix V: Reproductions of English Panels; Indexes; Addenda & Corrigenda.

Tim Lorentzen
536 pp. Deutsch [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MYTTON HALL, LANCASHIRE.
Catalogue of the Principal Paintings, Drawings, Books, Bronzes, &c., at Mytton Hall, The Residence of John Hick, Esq. Illustrations reproduced from Negatives made by Thos. Parkinson, of Bolton.
Printed for Private Circulation only by Ede, Dearberg & Co. 1893. Folio, 88pp., illustrated throughout with photogravures, gutta-percha of the ‘perfect’ binding is perishing resulting in several pages becoming loose, orig. brick-red grained cloth with bevelled boards, titled in gilt with gilt border rules, head and foot of spine lightly frayed, a.e.g. Commences with two black and white photographic views of Mytton Hall itself and two further views from the terrace looking north-west and south-west. The house was built circa 1485 - 1509, and is probably the work of Ralph Catterall. The rooms in the house have been evocatively photographed so the artefacts can be seen in the settings in which they were displayed. The artefacts are listed room by room with photographs and the books are catalogued according to where they were kept. Provides a fascinating glimpse of life in an English country house towards the end of the Victorian era. In recent years, Mytton Hall has become a country house hotel. A scarce privately printed work, not in the British Library.

October 16, 1555) was the bishop of Rochester, the bishop of Worcester, and after his death he became a famous Protestant martyr. Latimer was born into a family of farmers in Thurcaston, Leicestershire. From around 14 years of age he started to attend Peterhouse, Cambridge, and was known as a good student. After receiving his academic degrees and being ordained, he developed a reputation as a very zealous Roman Catholic. At first he opposed the Lutheran opinion of his day, but his views changed after meeting the clergyman Thomas Bilney. In 1510, he was elected a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and in 1522 became university preacher. He became noted for his reformist teachings, which attracted the attention of the authorities. During King Henry VIII's reign he was twice imprisoned in the Tower of London (1539 and 1546) . During the reign of Henry's son Edward VI, he was restored to favour as the English church moved in a more Protestant direction. However, when Edward's sister Queen Mary I came to the throne, he was tried for his beliefs and teachings in Oxford and imprisoned. In October 1555 he was burned at the stake outside Balliol College, Oxford. Latimer was executed beside Nicholas Ridley. He is quoted as having said to Ridley: "Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out." - See Wikipedia .

Worshippers and Warriors: Reconstructing gender and gender relations in the prehistoric rock art of Naquane National Park, Valamonica, Brescia, northern Italy (bar s)
British Archaeological Reports British Archaeological Reports. PAPERBACK. 184171920X This study is the first gendered study of the prehistoric rock art of Naquane National Park in Valcamonica, northern Italy. Its purpose is to identify and describe gendered representations and imagery in the rock art of Naquane, in order to reconstruct potential gender roles, gender relations and ritual activities during the Bronze and Iron Age periods. The social role of art in non-western cultures is explored, as well as recent work on gender studies in archaeology and rock art, with a view towards placing the prehistoric rock art of Naquane within a social and cultural context. Gender-specific access to and usage of the rock art sites during successive phases of prehistory is considered and analysis is presented of the possible rituals being portrayed in the rock art and their potential social implications. Discussion also focuses on the social and ritual construction of femininity and masculinity during different chronological periods, as well as upon possible gendered motifs and sexual imagery in the rock art. The study concludes with a discussion of the incidence of over-carving and the incorporation of earlier images into later rock art panels, considering potential reasons why certain earlier carvings were actively curated among the predominantly male-orientated Iron Age rock art. 192p, b/w illus (BAR S 1485, Archaeopress 2006). 9781841719207. (DONATUS, AELIUS).
Fragment of an unrecorded Donatus edition Ars minor.
Nuremberg, Friedrich Creussner, ca. 1485).. Folio. Printed on vellum. Rubricated. 4 (of 16) lvs., with 28 lines to a page.. Fragment of an unrecorded Donatus edition, and one of two copies known printed on vellum. The leaves present are A2, A7, B4, and B5 from the original signatures A-B8. The type has been identified as 165 G, a type used by the Nuremberg printer Friedrich Creussner. The present fragment was found not to belong to any of the three other editions of a 28-line Donatus printed by Creussner. GW 8847 we could exclude; GW 8846 could be excluded by the kind help of Dr. E. Hertrich of the Staatsbibliothek at München, and IDL 1624 (= MMW II, 676), could be excluded at the hand of photostats, kindly supplied by G. van Thienen. Creussner printed all his Donatus editions with the same type: 165 G. He first used this type in a dated edition of 1477 in "Buch des edlen Ritters und Landfahrers Marco Polo", cf. BMC II, 449, and the last dated book with this type was Bernardinus "Sermones", in 1493, cf. BMC II, 454. Donatus wrote his "Ars Minor", a children's Latin grammar, in the 4th century A.D. at Rome, and for over a thousand years it guided children's first steps in the language. Still, over 90% of all editions of the Donatus only came to us in fragments. And only one copy, out of the 10 editions printed by Creussner, has survived more complete than ours. Well preserved fragment, probably survived serving as the inner-linings of an old bookbinding.- (Cut short at outer and lower margin with loss of text; traces of glue and leather). Not in GW, BMC, Goff, Hain, IDL, Polain for the text; cf. Schwencke, Die Donat- und Kalender-Type , in: Veröffentl. Gutenberg-Gesell ., 1903; Nico Israel, Cat. 25, nr. 3 (this copy); NUC lists one copy of a 25-line Donatus on vellum.

(E)SPINA, Alfonso de
Fortalicii fidei.
Nuremberg, Antonii Koberger, 1485. Referencias: Goff A-480; Pell 563; Polain (B) 158; Palau 82472; BMC II 247 Early and rare edition of the “Fortalicium Fide”l (Fortress of the Faith). Espina or Spina, Spanish Franciscan, was considered an authority on all things theological, including demonology. This is the first printed book to contain a description of witchcraft. Good copy, bound in modern half calf.

Winn, Mary Beth
Anthoine Vérard, Parisian Publisher, 1485-1512 : Prologues, Poems and Presentations
DROZ - 9782600002196 Livre usage a l'etat de neuf / Used book as new condition ############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################### Anthoine Verard dominated French book production in Paris from 1485 to 1512, publishing more than 280 editions. Skillfully maneuvering the multi-faceted role of "libraire," he achieved special renown for his in-folio volumes, printed on vellum and illuminated by the best artists of the time. For these presentation copies, Verard assumed the stance of "Acteur" of the book, proclaimed verbally in prologues which he affixed to individual copies and visually in frontispieces where the publisher is depicted as the kneeling donor. Verard composed 19 prologues, several prayers in verse, and an emblematic text for his publisher's device. All are edited and examined in this study, with reproductions of them accompanying full-page miniatures. These deluxe presentation copies reveal how the publisher prepared books for his various patrons, exploiting the dual arts of manuscript and print in order to capitalize on both commerce and patronage. Charles VIII and Anne de Bretagne, Charles d'Angouleme and his wife Louise de Savoie, parents of the future Francois I, Henry VII of England, and others attracted the publisher's attention. This study explores Verard's work as "author-donor," analyzing the publisher's own words and details of the books themselves. It examines Verard's relationships with contemporary authors, artists, editors, scribes, and printers, as well as merchants and clerks, so as to illuminate the work of the first great "marchand libraire."

Patrick Collinson
The Sixteenth Century: 1485-1603
OUP Oxford - This volume explores the transformation of the British Isles in the sixteenth century. England was an effectively governed monarchy, but its authority was not easily enforced beyond the more developed south-east and midlands and it was exerised indirectly in Wales and Ireland, while Scotland was an independent monarchy. In Europe, England was significant trading partner, but its language unknown. By the early seventeenth century, the London-based English government had extended its effective authority over the North and Wales, Ireland was subjugated and colonised, and the English and Scottish crowns united. The established churches of the British Isles had broken away from the Roman Catho.

1485. Gregory IX, Pope [1147? -1241]. Decretalium Gregorii. Venice: Petri Cremoniensis, 1485. Quarto in 8's and 12's (243 x 175 mm). 509 ff., 58 lines, Gothic type, one initial letter illuminated in silver, with penned red floriate surround, two to four line capitals supplied in red and blue, a few lines printed in red. Modern half blind stamped calf over wooden boards. Title lightly soiled, faint marginal stain to first 30 leaves. Extensive contemporary marginalia. A very desirable volume. * Goff G-455; Hain 8016. "Decretals are letters containing a papal ruling, particularly one relating to canonical discipline, and most precisely a papal prescript in response to an appeal...the Decretals of Gregory IX are the first authentic general collection of papal Decretals and constitutions, compiled by Raymond of Penaforte at the request of Pope Gregory IX in 1230-34 and promulgated in 1234. (...) It gave rise to a vast amount of commentaries and literature" (Walker). Gregory's Decretales is one of the four works known collectively as the Corpus Juris Canonici, a collection of papal decisions concerning ecclesiastical hierarchy, procedure, the functions and duties of clerks, marriage, and crime. This edition predates the Reformation-inspired Correctores Romani (1580-1582), which was definitive until the revision of 1917. Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law 177-179.

"Decretals are letters containing a papal ruling, particularly one relating to canonical discipline, and most precisely a papal prescript in response to an appeal.the Decretals of Gregory IX are the first authentic general collection of papal Decretals and constitutions, compiled by Raymond of Penaforte at the request of Pope Gregory IX in 1230-34 and promulgated in 1234. Gregory's Decretales is one of the four works known collectively as the Corpus Juris Canonici, a collection of papal decisions concerning ecclesiastical hierarchy, procedure, the functions and duties of clerks, marriage, and crime. TITO LIVIO
HISTORIARUM AB URBE CONDITA LIBRI OMNES. TARVISII, IOANNES (ROSSO) VERCELLENSIS, 1485.
FORESI Bastiano
Libro chiamato Ambizione.
Princ. Florenz 1485, nach dem Exemplar der Technischen Universität München. 4 Bände, 16 x 23 cm, Faksimile-Band 20 x 27 cm, zus. ca. 3200 S., geb. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Worshippers and Warriors: Reconstructing gender and gender relations in the prehistoric rock art of Naquane National Park, Valamonica, Brescia, northern Italy
British Archaeological Reports - This study is the first gendered study of the prehistoric rock art of Naquane National Park in Valcamonica, northern Italy. Robert Bucholz, Newton Key
Early Modern England 1485-1714
BLACKWELL PUBL. Early Modern England 1485-1714 is the first new survey of the Tudor-Stuart period in a quarter century. Written by two leading scholars and experienced teachers of the subject, it assumes no prior knowledge of English history. The text is broken up with reader aids including maps, illustrations, and genealogies. The narrative shows how, under the Tudors and the Stuarts, England transformed itself from a feudal and relatively minor European state into a constitutional monarchy and the wealthiest and most powerful nation on Earth. The story of struggles over governmental and religious policies is enlivened by snapshots of how social and cultural changes affected ordinary English men and women. The authors also cover developments in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales that are relevant to English history. An introduction sets the scene, providing students with an overview of the physical and mental geography of early modern England. Opening and closing chapters explain how the events covered in the book fit into the course of English history. ISBN10: 0631213929.

Taxation Under the Early Tudors 1485-1547
Brand new. If taxation is the mobilization of economic resources for political ends, it is evident that any study of taxation must probe well beyond the administrative technicalities of its subject. Social, economic, political and administrative history are all part of the investigation. The early Tudor period is especially significant in the history of taxation. This new study examines the taxes granted by parliament to the crown between 1485 and 1547. Under Henry VIII, taxation based on the direct assessment of each individual was revived, having been abandoned as unworkable in the fourteenth century. In the long run, the Tudor experiment failed: direct assessment was abandoned again after decades of complaint about evasion and under-assessment in the mid-seventeenth century, and was not restored until the end of the eighteenth century. But examination of the experiment, and of the timing and causes of its failure, throws light on the changing political limits of the Tudor state.

Fol. 317 recto & verso with a long commentary in contemporary hand. The hand-colouring well preserved and printed on well preserved thick paper. The extremely scarce first edition of GART DER GESUNDHEIT, a truly remarkable book, not only in the sense of its content as "a landmark in the history of botanical illustration"(Hunt), but also with its position in the history of printing, as it was produced by Gutenberg's head assistant (Meisterschüler), PETER SCHOEFFER in Mainz, in the Gutenberg premises which were taken over by Schoeffer and Fust. The book has been called THE MOST IMPORTANT MEDIEVAL WORK ON NATURAL HISTORY WITH ILLUSTRATIONS, and it is the first Herbal at all written and printed in the vernacular. Claus Nissen (in BBI) describes the publication of it as a decisive turning-point in botanical illustration ("das (es) in der botanischen Illustrationsgeschichte ein ganz entscheidenden Wendepunkt bedeutet").GART DER GESUNDHEIT takes up a unique position in the family of Herbals or Hortus, which in the sense of the fifteenth century is not a botanical treatise, but a medical book intended for both the layman and the physician. It calls attention to the valuable herbs free to all, and similarly also to remedies derived from animals and minerals, a popular medicine book but in no way popular in the modern sense, as it served also in the technical education at the time. The prototype of the Hortus-family is HERBARIUS (Latin), also published by Schoeffer in 1484, the GART, though based on the Herbarius, "is a new creation in the vernacular, distinguished by original concepts, both textually and artistically, while the Hortus proper, combining both the virtues and vices of the former, is more ambitious in scope, more complex because of added material - an elaboration of the Herbarius, but less lucid and original than the Gart der Gesundheit" (Klebs). The GART inspired several contemporary printing presses immediately and gave rise to at least 14 other incunabula editions of Latin Herbarius (none in folio, mostly in quarto) and none with the GART- illustrations, but with copies in smaller design. Secondly, the 15 famous copied editions with the same title and also in the vernacular, starting already the same year with the fine incunabula from Augsburg, printed by Schönsperger 1485 (Schönsperger 1486, 1487, 1488, Dickmut, Ulm 1487, Grüninger, Strassburg c. 1488, Basel, Furter, c. 1490 etc.) Their cuts are copies from the GART. - The last member of the family, the HORTUS (Sanitatis or Ortus), sometimes called "the larger Hortus" - GART "the smaller Hortus", was inspired and largely derived from the GART and it has 5 incunabula editions, among these the famous Meydenbach-e

(Jacobus de Voragine):
Leben der Heiligen: Winterteil (Legenda aurea, deutsch): "sant prisca" (GW M11369).
Augsburg, Johann Schönsperger, 10. Januar 1485. Type 1..
