Description : [in 8vo] – pp. 459, (b), (2b).TORRENTINE EDITION. Nice small 8vo edition of the Biographies of the Popes Leo X , Adrianus VI and of the cardinal Pompeo Colonna penned by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) historian and bishop pf Nocera realized in Florence in the press of Laurentius Torrentinus ( real name Laurens van den Bleeck) , typographer from Gemert in Brabant ( Netherlands) , active in Firenze and Pescia, son of Lennart. Turrentinus was also a bookseller in Bologna together with Arnoldo Arlenio, operating under the business name "" libreria del Thodesco"". Torentinus (1499 -1563) was invited in Florence by the Duke Cosimo de' Medici in the year 1546, and the following year in 1547 opened his press in Garbo close to the Church of S. Romolo. Between 1554 and 1555 worked in Pescia. In 1562 was summoned in Mondovì to manage and direct the typography founded there by will of the Duke Emannuel Filiberto. Died in Florence in 1563; the press was later on managed by his sons Leonardo, Romolo and Bonaventura. The first Edition of Giovio's Lives was printed 3 years before (1548) in folio format . IGI 5584. IBE 3388 (un único ejemplar en la Real Colegiata de San Isidoro de Leon). Las Sátiras de Juvenal (65-128) son el caso paradigmático de literatura satírica y de revisión envenenada de la miseria de algunos hombres. Contrario a la decadencia del Imperio, Juvenal raza un retrato ácido y despiadado de sus contemporáneos. Las 16 sátiras, repartidas en cinco libros, pueden fecharse por sus alusiones cronológicas entre el 100 y el 128.Muy conocidas son las expresiones de más fortuna que escribió: panem et circenses, refiriéndose a las costumbres de los romanos en tiempos del Imperio, Sed quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (¿Quién vigilará a los propios vigilantes?, Mens sana in corpore sano. Los comentarios de Calderino, Mancinello (1452-1506) y Merula (ca. 1430-1494) abrazan la obra y la enriquecen y traen la justificación de su sentido satírico a la realidad del siglo xv y aun a la del nuestro. Es obra de referencia obligada en la historia de la literatura. La edición original se publicó hacia 1470.

Baptista de Tortis, Venice 1483 17th century panelled calf with large lozenge composed of small tools with gilt circle at center, gilt edges (carefully rebacked) Folio (307 x 215 mm) . FIRST EDITION with this commentary by the Italian humanist, Pietro Marso (Petrus Marsus: 1442-1512), whose work was admired by Erasmus who met him in Rome when he was almost seventy. Marso was a student and close associate of Pomponius Laetus and Johannes Argyropoulos. Because of his association with the Roman Academy in 1468 he was briefly imprisoned along with Laetus, Platina and Argyropoulos. Marso and Laetus shared an interest in the Punica by Silius Italicus with Laetus having edited an earlier version of the text while for the present edition Marso has supplied an extensive commentary. "On Pomponius' recommendation, Marso became tutor to Cristoforo Piccolomini, the nephew of Cardinal Iacopo Ammanati, in 1472. Some time between 1472 and 1481 he was also appointed a teacher of rhetoric at the University of Rome. He most famous student was Paolo Cortese. "During his long tenure at the Studio of Rome Marso produced numerous textual commentaries, notably on Cicero's De officiis (Venice: Baptista de Tortis 1481) and De senectute (Venice: O. Scoto 1494), and on Silius Italicus (Venice: Baptista de Tortis 1483). In addition, Marso took responsibility for posthumously editing Argyropoulos' translation of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics . and delivered several orations, including one at the funeral of Pomponius Laetus" (Contemporaries of Erasmus, II, p. 394). A very nice copy that has been handsomely rubricated throughout [178] leaves. 64 lines of commentary. Type: 1:114R (text), 2:78R (Commentary), 2- to 6-line initials in red. Some occasional light foxing in outer blank margins, small hole in blank margin in first leaf and two tiny wormholes at end. Some early annotations. Octavianus Scotus Venice July 16, 1483 Folio. 371(of 372) leaves. Lacking the preliminary blank (A1). Roman type. Capital spaces not filled in, except the first initial letter "R" in blue (now quite faded). Modern full dark brown calf, blind tooled, spine with red morocco label. First edition of this famous history of Rome by the 15th century historian Blondus (d. 1463). Curiously, this copy has added 3 leaves of index from another work (a text on problems in Aristotle) bound, in error, between final leaves S7 and the register S8. Goff B698; BMC V 277.

Type 2, 3.. 2-spaltiges Original-Inkunabelblatt mit 12 kolorierten Wappenschildern (Hanns Hirsberger, Cüntz vonn der Kappen, Hanns Schott, Hainrich Rädnitzer, Ulrich von Kintsperge starb im concilio zu costentz, Jörg Schenck von Geiren, Herzenberg, Alttstetten, Bibelstatt, Dankertschweilen). Blatt im Randbereich etwas fleckig mit einer Interlinearglosse der Zeit. Blattgröße: 19,4 x 28,8 cm. Incunabula text woodcut leaf.. Das farbig kolorierte Blatt entstammt der ersten und einzigen Ausgabe des 15. Jahrhunderts. Das Werk wurde mit mit 1203 Holzschnitten illustriert. Richenthal, Sohn des Konstanzer Stadtschreibers Johann Richenthal erlebte das XVI. allgemeine Konzil, dass von 1414 bis 1418 in Konstanz tagte, als Augenzeuge. Die Blätter entstammen dem zweiten Teil des Werkes, der Auflistung der Teilnehmer des Konzils mit ihren heraldischen Zeichen. Es ist das erste bedeutende gedrucke Wappenbuch.(Becker; Overgaauw: Aderlass und Seelentrost 2003, 438).

E' una delle edizioni di riferimento più importanti del suo tempo in quanto la più vicina alle fonti greche, ricca di connotazioni ai margini relative ai vangeli e con le aggiunte di Franciscus Moneliensis di Genova e di Quintus Aemilianus. In fine contiene l' aggiunta in 32 carte delle " INTERPRETATIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM". Mancano purtroppo 22 carte: le prime 3 + a10 + d8 + il quaterno N(8cc.) alla seconda + la ultima carta (398) bianca al verso. Il volume inizia con carta a4. i colophon è a carta 366 al fine della "apocalipsis" cui seguono le 32 carte delle "INSCRIPTIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM" che spesso mancano. Edition "valued on account of the emendations and notes supplied by Ritterhusius, the learned editor" (Schwerdt). Oppian is the name of two author of didactic poems in Greek hexameters. Oppian of Corycus in Cilicia wrote the poem on fishing (Halieutica) of about 3500 lines which he dedicated to Aurelius and his son Commodus (c. 170). Oppian of Apamea in Syria dedicated his poem on hunting (Cynegetica) to the emperor Caracalla, so that this must have been written after 211 and which consists of four books. The author evidently knew the Halieutica, and perhaps intended his poem as a supplement. Both works are printed here in Greek with the Latin translation.Browned in places; two marginal wormholes; bookplates of H. Gallice and Marcel Jeanson; flyleaves slightly damaged.

Foliation: [4], 101, [2], 28 leaves (the total of 135 leaves forming 270 pages). Signature collation: p4 a-h10 i12 k10 ?2 A-B10 C8 .Complete copy. Printed in gothic letter (with some quotations in Greek type), in double column, 58 lines per column. Initial spaces (unrubricated) with printed guide-letters. Full page woodcut illustration of the tree of consanguinity ("Hec est arbor consanguinitatis") on leaf e9v, woodcut 'T-O' map in text on leaf g9v, and other schematic woodcuts in text. Recto of the first leaf (p1r) is blank, on verso begins the Table of Contents of the Etymologiae (Registru[m] in libros etymologiaru[m].) which ends on p4 recto (verso blank). Text of the Etymologiae is prefaced with several letters between St.Isidore and Bishop Braulio (leaves a[2]r - a[3]r). Text of the Etymologiae begins on a[3]r with Incipit liber primus etymologiarum. Text of the Etymologiae ends on k10 verso with Finit liber etymologiarum Isidori hyspalensis episcopi. The following unsigned quire of 2 leaves contains the Table of Contents of De summo bono on ?1v-?2r (?1r and ?2v are blank). It is followed by the text of De summo bono occupying leaves A1r - C8r, and terminating with the colophon on C8r. Verso of the final leaf (C8v) is blank. Very Good antiquarian condition. Binding slightly rubbed. Front inner hinge a bit started, but holding securely, binding tight. A pencilled signature and faded small stamp of K.G.T. Webster to top of front free endpaper; two identical small round armorial stamps (of 17th century?) of an ecclesiastical library to blank verso of p1. A clipping from an early catalogue pertaining to this edition tipped to front pastedown. Some leaves slightly browned, occasional light staining or minor soiling. A few tiny wormholes to the textblock at the beginning of the volume (affecting a few letters), and to blank margins of a few final leaves. The Etymologiae is the highly influential encyclopedia of medieval knowledge, composed by Saint Isidore at the beginning of the 7th century AD. The Etymologiae present a systematic survey of the world according to Judaic, Graeco-Roman, and Christian civilization in the form of a vast thesaurus of Latin vocabulary, which supplies a more or less accepted or fanciful etymology for each term. It covers the liberal arts, medicine, law, language, geography and natural history, and constituted one of the main routes for the transmission of classical learning to the middle ages. Etymologiae presents in abbreviated form much of that part of the learning of antiquity that Christians thought worth preserving. The book provided a rich source of classical lore and learning for medieval writers. THE IMPORTANT 'T-O MAP' is included, in a slightly modified form, in this 1483 edition (on leaf g9v). It represents only the top-half of the spherical Earth. It was presumably tacitly considered a convenient projection of the inhabited parts, the northern temperate half of the globe. The 'T' in the map is the Mediterranean, dividing the three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa, and the 'O' is the encircling Ocean. Jerusalem was generally represented in the center of the map. Asia was typically the size of the other two continents combined. In patristic geography the Earthly Paradise (the Garden of Eden) was believed to be situated in Asia, at the eastern edge of India. Alcune iniziali in inchiostro rosso e marrone. Legatura coeva in pelle di scrofa montata su assi di legno e chiusa da un fermaglio sul taglio esterno. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione, restauri al margine della carta a1, alcune gore e fori di tarlo ai margini delle ultime carte; una crepa lungo l’asse lignea del piatto anteriore della legatura, sguardie in pergamena moderna. Alcune note manoscritte nel testo; curiosa area di stampa di 10 linee impressa a secco all’ultima carta. Seconda edizione del primo trattato di bibliofilia. Questo libro segna anche l’inizio dell’attività tipografica dei fratelli Hist a Spira, come si evince dalla loro epistola prefatoria al volume datata 13 gennaio 1483. L’autore del Phylobyblon, il benedettino Richard de Bury, figlio di Sir Richard Aungerville, studiò filosofia e teologia ad Oxford, fu arcivescovo di Durham e cancelliere del re d’Inghilterra. Il de Bury, un anno prima della morte «nel gennaio del 1334, aveva terminato di scrivere il Philobiblon, quel “trattatello sull’amore dei libri” che gli avrebbe assicurato la riconoscenza e l’affetto di generazioni di bibliofili. E fu proprio la passione per i libri – “Nessuno ne aveva più di lui”, dice Petrarca, e il de Chambre: “Il suo maggior piacere era nella gran quantità di libri che aveva” – a dettargli il Philobiblon, unica opera che gli si conosce, scritta al termine della sua vita e che, di capitolo in capitolo, assume l’aspetto di un manuale pratico di bibliofilia e di un trattato di morale, alternando considerazioni sull’evoluzione della civiltà ed altre sullo sviluppo della storia, più strettamente legate alla sua esperienza e alla funzione politica. Dedicata a Carlo V fu forse composta in occasione della crociata organizzata dall’Imperatore nel 1532. Il trattato dimostra la profonda conoscenza che l’A. aveva della politica e cultura turca: vi discute delle misure sanitarie che questi adottavano in guerra, delle tattiche militari, con una certa stima per le qualità belliche che rendevano gli Ottomani avversari assai temibili. Sono note edizioni simili a questa stampate a Venezia nel 1540 ma con piccole differenze. Raro. [303]

Verona, Boninus de Boninis 17 Febbraio 1483 Folio (cm 31), pergamena fine ottocento con unghie, titolo su tassello in marocchino rosso al dorso, bell’esemplare molto pulito e marginoso, forse lavato al tempo in cui è stato rilegato, ma con ancora ben nitide numerose postille marginali coeve, in minuta ed elegante calligrafia umanistica. Testo impresso in ben carattere romano, spazi per lettere capitali, cc. 247 (di 254), mancano le prime 6 cc. nn., stampate a parte e sovente mancanti in altri esemplari, e l’ultima bianca E10. Magnificamente illustrato con 96 xilografie, di cui molte a piena pagina, copie leggermente ridotte di quelle utilizzate nella prima edizione del 1472 (tranne 1, incisa orig. per qs edizione), tradizionalmente attribuite allo scultore Matteo de Pasti (cfr. A. Hind, History of the Woodcut, vol. II, p. 411). Seconda edizione in latino di quest’opera, che è la prima in assoluto a contenere tali illustrazioni a carattere tecnico e scientifico. Le presenti xilografie differiscono lievemente nello stile rispetto alle prime da cui sono copiate, e secondo studi più recenti condotti su alcuni manoscritti sarebbero da attribuire all’artista Giovanni da Fano, attivo nell’ambiente riminese, ove peraltro alla corte di Sigismondo Malatesta viveva l’autore dell’opera stessa, Roberto Valturio. Come è noto Leonardo da Vinci possedette una copia di quest’opera nella propria biblioteca (cfr. Ladislao Reti, "The Library of Leonardo da Vinci", LA 1972), e anche riprodusse alcune delle macchine da guerra nel Codice Atlantico. Hain/Cop. 15848; BMC VII 952; Voullieme B 4575; Goff V89.

In fine contiene l' aggiunta in 32 carte delle " INTERPRETATIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM". Mancano purtroppo 22 carte: le prime 3 + a10 + d8 + il quaterno N(8cc.) alla seconda + la ultima carta (398) bianca al verso. Il volume inizia con carta a4. i colophon è a carta 366 al fine della "apocalipsis" cui seguono le 32 carte delle "INSCRIPTIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM" che spesso mancano. Anche SANDER "prices" 3090 e OLSCHKI "MONUMENTA TYPOGRAFICA" 1903 n° 815, hanno esemplari incompleti. IGI, registra solo 12 copie nelle biblioteche italiane. Esemplare con difetti e segni d' uso per lo più ai margini inizio e fine, qualche raro forellino di tarlo e alcune macchie sempre marginali, ma buono nel complesso, nitido e a grandi margini, con annotazioni coeve. opera di grande bellezza tipografica; per notizie sul valente tipografo vedi MARZI "TIPOGRAFI TEDESCHI IN ITALIA NEL SEC. Grandi angoli. -- cc. 376 nn. (di 398). Carattere gotico, testo a due colonne, 58 linee, spazi per lettere capitali. E' una delle edizioni di riferimento più importanti del suo tempo in quanto la più vicina alle fonti greche, ricca di connotazioni ai margini relative ai vangeli e con le aggiunte di Franciscus Moneliensis di Genova e di Quintus Aemilianus. In fine contiene l' aggiunta in 32 carte delle " INTERPRETATIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM". Mancano purtroppo 22 carte: le prime 3 + a10 + d8 + il quaterno N(8cc.) alla seconda + la ultima carta (398) bianca al verso. Il volume inizia con carta a4. i colophon è a carta 366 al fine della "apocalipsis" cui seguono le 32 carte delle "INSCRIPTIONES NOMINUM HEBRAICORUM" che spesso mancano. Anche SANDER "prices" 3090 e OLSCHKI "MONUMENTA TYPOGRAFICA" 1903 n° 815, hanno esemplari incompleti. IGI, registra solo 12 copie nelle biblioteche italiane. Esemplare con difetti e segni d' uso per lo più ai margini inizio e fine, qualche raro forellino di tarlo e alcune macchie sempre marginali, ma buono nel complesso, nitido e a grandi margini, con annotazioni coeve. opera di grande bellezza tipografica; per notizie sul valente tipografo vedi MARZI "TIPOGRAFI TEDESCHI IN ITALIA NEL SEC. Meissen, (Markus Brandis), 16. Juli 1483.Type 6. . 2-spaltiges, 50-zeiliges O-Inkunabelblatt in schwarz-rotem Druck mit mehreren roten u. blauen Lombarden. Je eine Lombarde mit einem 7- und 16-zeiligen Randausläufer. Rotgestrichene Versalbuchstaben und Wasserzeichen "Krone mit blumengeschmücktem Kreuz auf drei Kugeln". Blatt stellenweise fleckig auf festem Papier. Blattgröße: 33,7 x 23,1 cm. Incunabula text leaf. . Die Frage nach dem ungenannten Drucker des ersten typographisch vervielfältigen Breviers für Meissen war schwer zu beantworten, weil die 1483 verwendeten Breviertypen seit 1484 bei Simon Koch in Magdeburg und seit 1485 bei Matthäus Brandis in Lübeck vorkamen. Seit 1974 ist bekannt, dass Markus Brandis mit seinen damaligen Mitarbeitern Matthäus Brandis u. Simon Koch zur Drucklegung des Breviers nach Meissen berufen wurde. Das Brevier war für den Chordienst bestimmt und Markus Brandis hatte mit diesem komplizierten Brevierdruck bewiesen, dass er ein tüchtiger Drucker geworden war.

An unrecorded second variant plate or duplicate ofB442 from within Marcantonio's workshop, or a skillful reproduction by an unidentiifed artist contemporary to Raimondi (See Parshall and Landau). Signed in plate with Raimondi's monogram "MAF" lower right. A rich, clear and brilliant impression, most likely early second quarter of the 16th century, in fine condition aside from minor areas of paper weakness and a single pinhole along the left paper edge near the sceptor. Trimmed within platemark, on to, or just within image borderline; with image borderline visible at left and bottom. Ex-collection Michael Berolzheimer. 4 5/16 X 3 1/8 inches

Dedicata a Carlo V fu forse composta in occasione della crociata organizzata dall’Imperatore nel 1532. Il trattato dimostra la profonda conoscenza che l’A. aveva della politica e cultura turca: vi discute delle misure sanitarie che questi adottavano in guerra, delle tattiche militari, con una certa stima per le qualità belliche che rendevano gli Ottomani avversari assai temibili. Sono note edizioni simili a questa stampate a Venezia nel 1540 ma con piccole differenze. Raro. [303]

Limp vellum binding formed of an old manuscript leaf, sometime rebacked with plain vellum. Housed in a full morocco folding box, dark green morocco spine label lettered gilt. Full-page woodcut of the tree of consanguinity (slightly shaved at fore-edge), circular woodcut map, numerous small woodcut symbols. A few early marginalia. Ex-London Library, with 2 blindstamps at beginning and end, and inkstamp with deaccession overstamp on recto of register. Binding rubbed, occasional ink stains including one narrow ink stain from top to bottom of c5 recto (text still easily legible), some staining, a few leaves lightly waterstained, withal a good copy. First Edition published in Italy, the fourth in all, of one of the earliest encyclopaedias. Composed c.600 A.D., it covers a wide range of subjects, including astronomy, medicine, anatomy, precious stones, shipbuilding, architecture, topography, and many others. It is a work of fundamental importance in the history of the transmission of the knowledge of the ancients to modern times, preserving much which would otherwise have been lost. The first edition, printed by Gunther Zainer at Augsburg in 1472, is especially noteworthy for being the first book to contain a printed map. The present edition contains a different copy of this map, from a different woodblock, in which the cross at the head of the external circle is aligned with the word Orient underneath. The late classical T!O form of the map derives from the type that was standard in manuscripts of the Etymologiae, and illustrates the Catholic theological vision of the geography of the earth, with Jerusalem represented literally at the centre (navel in popular medieval terms) of the world. The map depicts a T-shaped Mediterranean separating Asia, Europe and Africa, the world ocean circumscribing the whole. It also identifies the son of Noah whose progeny populated each continent. This edition also contains a fine full-page woodcut of the tree of consanguinity and several small woodcut diagrams and symbols.
