Andrea Torresano de Asula for Simon de Lovere,. Andrea Torresano was the father-in-law of Aldus Manitius, who had purchased the press of Nicholas Jenson in 1482/3. In 1515, on Aldus' death, he took charge of the Aldine press until Paulus Manitius came of age. Simon de Luere worked for various printers in Northern Italy.Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374) Italian scholar and poet, often considered the "first humanist".He was widely travelled and became the first great Alpinist. His famous series of poems to Laura, the Canzoniere, are still considered some of the greatest poems ever written. "Not only did this culture hero gain an ardant welcome or these ideas and practices (antiquarianism, study of elegant Latin, study of Greek, etc.), but he shaped them into a single movement that came to dominate the culture of the age: to have established the vogue and ideology of classical antiquity and humaniustic studies was Petrarch's most significant achievement. In this sense he was 'the founder of the Renaissance." [Wedeck & Schweitzer, Dictionary of the Renaissance.] EDIT cnce 31762. Adams P773. Fiske Petrarch Coll.2-3. Bernoni,284:141. Hortis 3ff. PERSIUS FLACCUS, Aulus.
Incunable edition of one of the great Roman satirists, edited by Bartolomeo Fonzio, Satirarum opus.
|
Dionysius de Bertochis & Pelegrinus de Paschalibus Bononienses, 19009, Venice, - Sm. folio (292 x 205 mm). Vellum over boards (rebacked). Woodcut printer's device on last leaf (Device A), not rubricated (capital spaces not filled in), printed in Roman type: 110R and 83R. Collation: a-d6, e4; (28) leaves. One of the incunable editions of the satires of Persius with the gloss (commentary) of Bartolomeo della Fonte (Fonzio, or Fontius). According to the BMC, the text is 'reprinted, generally with the same page-contents, from the edition of De Tortis, 14 March, 1482'. Fonzio's dedication to Lorenzo de' Medici of 1477 is included on the verso of the first leaf (recto blank).Bartolomeo Fonzio (1445-1513) was a Florentine humanist whose achievements are on a par with those of Poliziano. Their early friendship later turned into enmity and unremitting polemics. Fonzio's commentary on Persius was first published in 1477 at the Ripoli press (Rhodes 315; Conway, p. 292); its dedication to Lorenzo de' Medici is reprinted here. His purpose was to firmly establish Persius as a satirical poet; it was not his intention to write a full commentary on Persius'work, but rather to give a clear and straightforward interpretation of the text and to free it from its obscurities.Aulus Persius Flaccus (AD 34-62), known generally as Persius, was one of the most famous Latin satirical poets. Born at Volaterrae in Etruria, he belonged to an equestrian family and was a relative of the famous Arria, wife of Paetus. He was educated at Rome, and became the pupil of the Stoic Cornutus, who exercised a strong influence on him; a fellow pupil was the Roman epic poet Lucan. He joined the group of Stoics around Thrasea Paetus, the senator who was married to the younger Arria. He bequeathed his books and a part of his large fortune to Cornutus, who accepted the books but not the money. Persius took no part in public life, died young, and left only a small amount of literary work: six satires (650 hexameter lines) modelled on Lucilius and Horace, and a prologue. Except for the first satire, these poems are homilies rather than satires in the strict sense, preaching an uncompromising Stoic morality as it could be applied to private life, and only incidentally touching on public life. He uses an incongruous mixture of styles and his language is obscure, but his moral sincerity is unforced and scarcely priggish when considered against the background of Nero's Rome.Satire I is a criticism of the poets at Nero's court and the contemporary fashion for elegant, unrealistic poetry, which Persius finds significant of the corruption of Roman virtue and hardihood. Satire 2 is concerned with the right use of prayer, mocking those who ask for external goods rather than virtue. Satire 3 is a diagnosis of the damage done to sick souls by sloth and vice. Satire 4 urges a young statesman (Nero?) to disregard public admiration and pursue virtue by examining his own character. Satire 5 is a eulogy of Cornutus, describing the simple and studious life the poet leads when in the philosopher's company; its subject is the rarity of true freedom-we are all the slaves of our passions or superstitions. Satire 6 is addressed to Caesius Bassus (a lyric poet commended by Quintilian) who edited Persius' satires after his death and is said to have died in the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79; it expounds the wisdom of living comfortably, but not covetously. Good copy with wide margins.- (Quires carefully washed; inner margins of last quire restored, with some marginal water staining). Hain-Copinger 12724; BMC VII, p. 1139; IGI 7499; Goff-346 (only 3 copies); Proctor 4845; IDL 3564 (1 copy in The Hague); IBP 4267; Madsen 3105; Voulième (B) 4076; Sack (Freiburg) 2731; Oates 1908; BSB-Ink P-247. Martin Waldseemuller
Decima Asiae Tabula [India]
|
Waldseemuller's map of India is one of the earliest obtainable maps of the region. The map appearedin Martin Waldseemuller's Geographiae opus novissima traductione e Grecorum archetypis castigatissime pressum. Waldseemuller's Geographiae is often referred to at the first modern atlas, incorporating for the first time 20 modern maps. The 27 maps of ancient geography which constitute the first part of the work are copied from the 1482 Ulm edition. The supplement of 20 maps represent the first series of "modern" maps, produced by Martin Waldseemüller at Saint-Dié. The new Latin translation of the text by Mathias Ringmann is based on d'Angelo's text, and was edited by Jacob Aeschler and Georg Uebelin. This geography includes many important maps, including the first map exclusively devoted to America ("Tabula terre nove"); Lorraine, one of the earliest color printed maps; and the first published maps for many other countries. Waldseemüller's maps made considerable geographical advances, basing their information on material in the University libraries in Basel and Strasbourg, as well as reports of Spanish and Portuguese voyages. No better assemblage of maps was issued until Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570. (Strassburg, 1513) [color: Uncolored, size: 22 x 16.5 inches, condition: VG]

BERLINGHIERI, Francesco di Nicolo
Tabula Septima de Asia: Scythia fora del Monte Imao
|
Florence: Nicolaus Laurentii, 1482. 330 x 480 mm., a couple of faint brown marks only one in the image just left of the centrefold, otherwise a very good example of a printed map 527 years old! The 1482 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geographia' is only the third atlas ever printed and one of the rarest of the Ptolemy editions. It was printed in Florence by Francesco Berlinghieri (1440-1501) at the time of the Medici family headed at the time by the great Lorenzo de' Medici. The first printed edition of Ptolemy's classical second century atlas was in Bologna in 1477. A Rome edition followed in 1478. What makes this printing unique is that they are the first and only ones to be printed according to Ptolemy's original design, that being on a plane projection with equidistant longitude and latitude lines. Most other editions use a trapezoidal projection. The engraving is believed to be the work of the great engraver Francesco Rosselli. As Woodward wrote 'the roots of the map trade in the Italian states can be traced to Florence, where the enterprise centred around the painter and miniaturist Francesco Rosselli, probably the first entrepeneur to be successful in making an independent living fro the print and map trade'This fine example is of Ptolemy's central Asia and displays the Caspian Sea to the west. It focuses on the extremely important Silk Road, the famous route to the east that Marco Polo undertook. This was the traditional trading route between the Mediterranean and Asia. This region today encompasses Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Campbell 143; Nordenskiold Collection 198 no. 23; Shirley 'Atlases in the British Library' T.Ptol 4a; Woodward 'Earliest Printed Maps' pp. 124-8; Woodward 'History of Cartography' vol. 3 pt. 1 pp. 321-3 & 773-4.

Motolinia, Toribio de Benavente (1482-1568)
Motolinia's History of the Indians of New Spain
|
pspan style="font-family: Arial;"xvii+338p with 9 plates, including frontispiece, bibliography and index. Small quarto (10 1/4" x 7") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and insignia to cover. Translated and annotated with bio-bibliographical study by Francis Borgia Steck. Preface by Roderick Wheeler. Publications of the Academy of American Franciscan History, documentary Series volume 1. From the library of George M Foster. 1st American edition.br /br /Fray Toribio de Benavente (1482, Benavente, Spain- 1568, Mexico City) also known as Motolinia was a Franciscan missionary and among the first 12 clerics to arrive in New Spain in May 1524. He entered the Franciscan order as a young boy changing his family name Paredes to that of his birth city Benavente, as was the custom among the Franciscans. In 1523 he was chosen to be among the first twelve missionaries to be sent to the New World. After a strenuous journey he arrived in Mexico where he was greeted by Hernan Cortes. Upon riding through Tlaxcala the Indians commented on his ragged Franciscan robes saying "emMotolinia/em" which in the Nahuatl language means "He afflicts himself" or "He is poor". This was the first word he learned in the Nahuatl language and he took it as his name. Motolinia accompanied Cortes on his journey to Honduras and when he returned to Mexico he was named guardian of the Convent of San Francisco in Mexico City where he resided from 1524 to 1527. From 1527 to 1529 he was in Guatemala and Nicaragua studying the new missions in that area. Back in Mexico he stayed at the convent of Huejotzinco near Tlaxcala, where he had to help the natives against the abuse and atrocities committed by Nuno de Guzman. He suggested to the native leaders that they complain to the Bishop Juan de Zumarraga about Guzman but the latter accused him of trying to instigate a revolt among the Indians against the Spanish sovereignty. In 1530 he went to the Convent of Tlaxcala and contributed in the foundation of the City of emPuebla de Los Angeles/em. With Franciscan colleagues he travelled to Tehuantepec, Guatemala and Yucatan to undertake further missionary work. Even though Motolinia protected Indians against the abuse of Guzman he did not share the opinions of the Dominican Bartolome de las Casas who saw the conquest and subjugation of the Indians as a crime and against all Christian morality. Motolinia believed that God would protect the Indians once converted and that the missionary work thus was more important than fighting the encomienda system and he remained a defender of the conquest, the encomienda system and the evangelization. In fact in a famous letter to Charles V of Spain he undertook a virulent attack upon Bishop Bartolome de las Casas, intending to discredit him completely. He called him "a grievous man, restless, importunate, turbulent, injurious, and prejudicial" and even an apostate in that he had renounced the Bishopric of Chiapas. He furthermore advised the king to have him shut up for safe keeping in a monastery. In 1545 the encomenderos of Chiapas asked for him to come there to defend them against Las Casas but he declined, in the same way he declined a position as Bishop offered to him by the king. Having founded many cloisters and convents in Mexico and supposedly baptized more than 400,000 Indians he retired to the Convent of San Francisco in Mexico where he died in 1568. He is remembered in Mexico as one of the most important evangelists.br /br /George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Caxton leaf. Higden, Ranulphus.
Polychronicon.

- [Westminster]: William Caxton, [after July 2 1482]. 2 leaves, being (1) leaf of text CCLV and (2) the colophon leaf CCCCxxxviii. Both leaves are rubricated. The first leaf has old manuscript notes in the margins. In good condition. A great rarity. Though Caxton leaves are not uncommon (there have been three Caxton leaf books published, and occasionally stray single leaves turn up), it is of the utmost rarity to see a Caxton colophon. This colophon is 14 lines and begins: "And here I make an ende of this lytel Werke as nigh as I can fynde after the forme of the werk to fore made by Ranulph monk of Chestre / And where as ther is fawlte/ I beseche them that shal rede it to correcte it." and ends: "prayenge of all them that shall see this symple werke to pardone me of my symple / and rude wrytynge/ Ended the second day of Juyll the xxcvii yere of the regne of kynge Edward the fourth & of the incarnation of oure lord a thousand four honderd foure score and tweyne / Fynysshed per Caxton".
|
Very nice copy, bound in 19th century morocco in Neoclassical style, of this second rare edition of Martial’s Epigrammata commented by Calderini. Together with the text of the Latin poet and the humanist’s commentary the volume contains also Calderini’s polemical pamphlet against Niccolò Perotti, already published in 1473 in a manuscript, titled Apologia in Nicolaum Perottum, addressed to Lorenzo de’ Medici (ms. Laur. plut. 53,33 of the Laurenziana Library). Good copy, repair to the white margin of leaf a2. Sack 1858. BMC II 492. Caxton leaf. Higden, Ranulphus.
Polychronicon.
|
[Westminster]: William Caxton, [after July 2 1482]. This colophon is 14 lines and begins: "And here I make an ende of this lytel Werke as nigh as I can fynde after the forme of the werk to fore made by Ranulph monk of Chestre / And where as ther is fawlte/ I beseche them that shal rede it to correcte it..." and ends: "prayenge of all them that shall see this symple werke to pardone me of my symple / and rude wrytynge/ Ended the second day of Juyll the xxcvii yere of the regne of kynge Edward the fourth & of the incarnation of oure lord a thousand four honderd foure score and tweyne / Fynysshed per Caxton". AN ATTRACTIVE LEAF FROM THE FIRST EDITION OF THE POLYCRONICON IN ENGLISH PRINTED BY ENGLAND'S FIRST PRINTER.
|
[Westminster]: William Caxton, [between 2 July and 20 November, 1482] ""276 x 209 mm. (10 7/8 x 8 1/4"""")."" Single column 40 lines and headline black letter type. Paragraph flourishes in red. With marginalia in a contemporary hand. Slight marginal discoloration from damp a bit of light soiling to margins otherwise in fine condition. Duff 172; Goff H-267; STC 13438. This leaf and the following item are from the "Polycronicon" a world history written by Ranulf Higden (or Higdon ca. 1299-1363) a monk of Chester. This popular work originally composed in Latin was first rendered into English in 1387 by our translator John of Trevisa Chaplain to the Earl of Berkeley and his version is of considerable interest to scholars for its English usage. The whole of this work Caxton revised continuing the chronicle up to the year 1460. This continuation is the only extant piece of Caxton's own composition. William Caxton (ca. 1422-92) established the first printing press in England in 1476 at Westminster where he printed more than 100 books many of which he had edited or translated himself. The costs of the few complete Caxton works to be found today are staggering making leaves like this one the only affordable way to own a piece of work done by England's first printer. The present specimen is particularly desirable because it has unusually large margins.

This encyclopaedia of higher education has been designed as a manual which takes a look at the rigmarole of higher education in the present century. Higher education has became a major area of thrust in education prompting the proliferation of many universities and colleges enabling many to pursue education beyond school. Vocational institutes also opened up equipping those unable to pursue traditional degrees with the knowledge and skills which can be highly beneficial for the commercial era. With education becoming a rallying point for politicians higher education has also gained a lot of attention and involvement and often seen as a key to further progress of a society. Written in five authentic volumes this work takes an in depth view of all areas of higher education process taking into account the ever evolving political social economic and cultural contexts. The effort is to delineate what entails higher education and more importantly what higher education signifies in a global context. It is hoped that the erudition and insight of this work serve well for the readers. 1482 pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ludolphus (Ludolf von Sachsen) de Saxonia:
Auslegung des Lebens Jesu Christi. (GW 3084, H 16108, Schramm V, 383).
|
Ulm, Johann Zainer d. Ä., 1482. Type 7.. (vgl. Niklas Holzberg: Der Äsop-Roman, 1992).

Campanus of Novara and Euclid's Elements
|
Franz Steiner Verlag. Hardcover. 3515086455 Euclid's Elements is acknowledged as the most influential writing on mathematics in the West at least till the end of the Middle Ages. Over the last thirty-six years several of the most important medieval Latin texts of the Elements have been edited. The most frequently used compilation remained, i.e. that of Campanus of Novara of the thirteenth century (before 1259). This version dominated Latin mathematics until printed editions were made from the Greek manuscripts in the sixteenth century. In 1482 the first printed edition of Euclid's Elements appeared in the redaction of Campanus, which was also the first printed mathematical book of any importance. 2 vols, 768p(Franz Steiner 2005). 9783515086455. Athanasii Alexandrini Opuscula Omnibono Leoniceno interprete
|
- Sismel. LXIV-361 + 4 tavv.

The sumptuous edition published at Ulm in 1482, however, far surpassed all earlier efforts and remains one of the most important publications in the history of cartography. This is the first redaction of the Geography to be printed outside of Italy, the earliest atlas printed in Germany, the first to depart from the classical prototype to reflect post-antique discoveries, the first to be illustrated with woodcuts rather than engravings, and the first to contain hand-colored maps, the design and execution of which were ascribed to a named cart

The sumptuous edition published at Ulm in 1482, however, far surpassed all earlier efforts and remains one of the most important publications in the history of cartography. This is the first redaction of the Geography to be printed outside of Italy, the earliest atlas printed in Germany, the first to depart from the classical prototype to reflect post-antique discoveries, the first to be illustrated with woodcuts rather than engravings, and the first to contain hand-colored maps, the design and execution of which were ascribed to a named cartographer. The Ulm edition, moreover, was the first to depart from the classical prototype by expanding the atlas to reflect post-antique discoveries about the size and shape of the earth. To the canonical twenty-seven Ptolemaic maps were added five "modern maps" of Spain, France, Italy, the Holy Land and northern Europe. The world map is of particular interest as it is the first to be signed, by Johannes Schnitzer of Armsheim, and the first to be based on Ptolemy's second projection, in which both parallels and meridians are shown curved to convey the sphericity of the earth. Schnitzer, furthermore, updated the Ptolemaic world picture by incorporating improvements that were probably based on a manuscript of the 1470s by Nicolaus Germanus. One notable addition is a rudimentary depiction of Scandinavia to the north, within an extension of the map's top border. The world map, moreover, embodies what is perhaps the most readily apparent feature of the Ulm Ptolemy: its beauty. The provenance on this book is the Robert Tobin collection sold at Sotheby's New York, December 7, 1999, Lot 302. Hammer price was $750,000 + commission of $77,000 = total cost of $827,000.

Extensive contemporary annotations in miniscule hand to all but a few leaves. A desirable volume due to its annotations, rubrications, handsome binding and overall condition. * "Decretals are letters containing a papal ruling, particularly one relating to canonical discipline, and most precisely a papal prescript in response to an appeal...the Decretals of Gregory IX are the first authentic general collection of papal Decretals and constitutions, compiled by Raymond of Penaforte at the request of Pope Gregory IX in 1230-34 and promulgated in 1234. (...) It gave rise to a vast amount of commentaries and literature" (Walker). Gregory's Decretales is one of the four works known collectively as the Corpus Juris Canonici, a collection of papal decisions concerning ecclesiastical hierarchy, procedure, the functions and duties of clerks, marriage, and crime. This edition predates the Reformation-inspired Correctores Romani (1580-1582), which was definitive until the enactment of the Code of Canon Law (1918). Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law 177-179. SACRO BOSCO, Joannes de
Sphaera Mundi.
|
1482 - Venice: Erhardt Ratdolt, 6 juillet 1482. Small 4to. The first Ratdolt edition, following the princeps 1472. a-g8 h6, 60 leaves (a1v armillary sphere and title, 31 lines. Typography: 92G (titles), 91G (text), 57 (diagrams). 4 large initials of 11 lines, 11 small initials of 5 lignes, 40 woodcuts and diagrams in the text, the title and eight others with the publisher's original colouring. Vellum of the 16th C., (spotting, spine broken with loss). Provenance: indecipherable contemporary inscription, then formerly in the collection of Count Paul Durrieu (1855-1925), one of the first and most eminent historians of late Medieval French illuminated manuscripts and Keeper of Manuscripts at the Bibliotheque Nationale. His personal collection of miniatures and of Flemish medieval illustration was well celebrated, as was his considerable corpus of printed work. The book is divided in four chapters, on the terrestrial globe, on circles great and small, on the rising and setting of the stars, and on the orbits and movements of the planets. "Sacrobosco's fame rests firmly on his De sphaera, a small work based on Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators, published about 1220 and antedating the De sphaera of Grosseteste. It was quite generally adopted as the fundamental astronomy text, for often it was so clear that it needed little or no explanation. It was first used at the University of Paris" (DSB). There were some 25 incunable editions after the first, and many more in the next century and a half, even after the critical work of Barozzi, 1570, had explicated the errors in the text and after being criticized severely by Galileo in the Dialogues. In fact, it continued to be required reading by students in the West for some four centuries. Sacrobosco's text is here found for the first time accompanied by treatises by Regiomontanus (1436-1476), ll. 18b-33a, correcting the planetary tables of Gerard of Sabbioneta. and his teacher Georg Peurbach (1423-1461), ll. 33a-60b the Theorica novae planetarum, composed c. 1454 and published in Nuremberg in 1473). EUCLIDES
Elementa Geometrica.
|
Preclarissimus liber elementorum Euclidis perspicacissimi in arte geometrie incipit qua foelicissime. Explicit opus elementorum Euclidis megarensis in geometria arte in id quoque Campani perspicacissimi comentationes finiunt. Erhardus Ratdolt Augustensis impressor solertissimus. Venetijs impressit Anno salutis 1482 octavis Calen. Iun. Goff E-113. Hoover 287. Horblit 27. Franz Steiner Verlag Y - 3515086455 Euclid's Elements is acknowledged as the most influential writing on mathematics in the West at least till the end of the Middle Ages. BERLINGHIERI, Francecso di Nicolo.
Tabula Tertia de Asia.
|
[Florence, 1482].. Engraved map. Dimensions: 390 by 530mm. (15.25 by 21 inches). A fine example of Berlinghieri's map. The Ptolemaic regional maps are drawn on Marinus' plane projection; and although not generally considered an edition of Ptolemy, the maps are the only examples of Ptolemy's maps to be drawn on the original projection, with equidistant meridians and parallels..
