The book has no title page colophon as issued and so carries no date of printing. On leaf Ooii is printed a letter to the printer Peter Drach from a friend who tells him he has compiled a register or index to the Sermons and this follows the letter. The letter is dated August 31 1481 and it is believed that the book was printed shortly after that date. Laid in the volume are 2 typed letters dated 1973 signed by the wellknown antiquarian bookseller and bibliophile Alan G. Thomas. These are addressed to a potential purchaser of our book, clarifying the issues to do with the date and the printer. Images sent on request. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A second edition with the other parts of the opera was not printed until it was accomplished by Anton Koberger in Nuremburg. The "Summa" is the principle work of Saint Antoninus (Florence 1389-1459), a Domenican brother who was named a diplomat of the Pope, embarked on a number of important missions for him and journeyed for the Pope to Florence from 1445. The book had great influence for hundreds of years and twenty editions alone were completed in Nuremberg and Venice to 1740 but most copies are incomplete. (M. Grabmann, Storia teol. catt., Milano, 1939, p. 138).

Sir Frederick Pollock [1845-1937], one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Maitland on The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I and his correspondence with Oliver Wendell Holmes, which was published posthumously as The Holmes-Pollock Letters. Dante Alighieri (with commentary by Christophoro Landino)
LA DIVINA COMMEDIA -- INFERNO (Canto XXIII Complete in 5 leaves)
Florence, Nicholo di Lorenzo (Nicolaus Laurentii, Alamanus), 1481, Florence - Five large folio sheets, in decent collector condition, with complete text of the 23rd Canto of The Inferno. Twelve capital initials nicely rubricated in blue. Beautifully printed with wide margins. A very early example of Dante's classic work. Last two sheets are still joined but all sheets comprising Canto XXIII are present. Printed on good Renaissance paper. Some brown age spotting and staining, including in the inside margin which also shows some soiling on two of the sheets. Still, an overall attractive collection of five incunabula pages forming a complete sub-text. Notes in very old hand, ink turned brown, at bottom of last page. The first Florentine edition of the Comedy appeared 30 August 1481. A product of the cultural circle surrounding Lorenzo (Il Magnifico) de' Medici (1449-1492), this edition was conceived as a polemical work. It was directed towards other Italian centers which had produced editions of the poem, especially those of Venice (1477) and Milan (1478). This monumental book represented the Florentine attempt to reclaim the great poet who, since the 14th century, had become a classic throughout Italy. The text appeared together with a completely new commentary authored by the most authoritative literary critic then teaching in Florence, Cristoforo Landino. Landino's interest for the language of Florence is clear throughout, and independently of Dante, Landino's commentary remains a rich linguistic source in its own right for the Renaissance language of Florence. Moreover, Landino's humanistic commentary distinguishes itself from its predecessors by its appreciation for the variety, vivacity and compelling realism of Dante's style. In this Canto, Dante is saved by Virgil from the demons who pursue them. In the sixth chasm are punished the Hypocrites, who are condemned to pace continually round the gulf under the pressure of cloaks which are gilt without, but lined inside with lead. [Psalterium].
Psalterium graeco-latinum cum canticis.
Milano, [Bono Accursio], 20 ottobre 1481. "In-4° (mm 243x188). Caratteri 100R, 125(127)Gk, 119(127)R. «The first printed Greek liturgical book was another product of the association between Accorsi and Crastoni (who was responsible for the Latin translation). The ?????????, dated ‘20th September 1481’, was published twice more in the fifteenth century, once by Laonikos and Alexandros in Venice (1486) and once by the Aldine press in an edition prepared by Ioustinos Dekadyos (c. 1494). It is odd that an Italian humanist should have taken the trouble to publish a Greek liturgical book in a place like Milan, where the Greek community was hardly big enough to give it much likelihood of commercial success - unless it was intended as a linguistic aid for students of Greek, as it is known to have been used later. Crastoni’s dedicatory preface, in Latin, is addressed to the Venetian theologian Ludovico Donato, Bishop of Bergamo, in recognition of his contribution to the accomplishment of the project. Proctor notes certain peculiarities in the types used for the Psalter: the Preface is printed in a different Latin fount from the one used in the text, and besides the new Greek fount used in Accorsi’s four previous publications we find yet another original fount different in size but similar, though somewhat more archaic, in style. The blocks used for these Greek words inserted in the Latin text were presumably cut specially to match the size of the Latin characters» (K. Sp. Staikos, Charta of Greek Printing, p. 149). First exceedengly rare bilingual biblical imprint, with the text of the Psalms in Greek and - in a parallel column - its Latin translation by the Italian humanist Johannes Crastonus. The book was printed by the Milanese press of Bonus Accursius and, according to Proctor, some copies of this edition have his name on the colophon. Nice copy, bound in 18th century red morocco, decorated in gold on boards; gilt title on spine, gilt edges, marbled flyleaves. At leaf a1r two illuminated initials, many initials painted in red throughout the text. The spine rubbed. In the lower inner cover a manuscript bibliographical note of the 18th century. Engraved bookplate of the Bishop of Durham. HC* 13454; Goff P, 1035; IGI 8123; BMC vi, 756; K. Sp. Staikos, Charta of Greek Printing. I. Fifteenth Century, Dinter 1998. "

Platina, Bartholomaeus Sacchi de
Vitae pontificum.
Anton Koberger, Nurnberg:: Anton Koberger,, 1481, August 11.. Late 19th c. 1/2 pebble-grain calf over marbled boards, some rubbing; marbled endpapers; the first leaf [a1r Hieronymus Sqarzaficus letter to Palatina. a2r Platina's Prohemium to Sixtus IV.as described in Bod-Inc or are these two separate leaves?-- From another copy? Another edition?] have been cut and are pasted to the verso of the endpaper without text loss ( their versos are blank),the first leaf of text is pasted to the fly-leaf at it's inner margin; a few occ. pin worm holes in blank margins, repaired tear in last leaf.. Folio. 293 x 203mm.. Rubricated throughout with a 5 line red initial 'M' on the first leaf, 14-lie initial 'N; on first text leaf with white decoration. Bartolomeo Platina, originally named Sacchi, was born at Piadena (Platina in Latin), near Mantua, in 1421; he died at Rome, 1481.#11; In 1457, he went to Florence, and studied under the Greek scholar Argyropulos. In 1462 he proceeded to Rome, probably in the suite of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga. After Pius II had reorganized the College of Abbreviators (1463), and increased the number to seventy, Platina, in May 1464, was elected a member.#11;When Paul II abolished the ordinances of Pius, Platina with the other new members was deprived of his office. Angered by this, he wrote a pamphlet insolently demanding from the pope the recall of his restrictions. When called upon to justify himself he answered with insolence and was imprisoned in the Castle of SantO Angelo, being released after four months on condition that he remain at Rome. In February 1468, with about twenty other humanists, he was again imprisoned on suspicion of heresy and of conspiring against the life of the pope...After his release on July 7, 1469, he expected to be again in the employ of Paul II, who, however, declined his services. Platina threatened vengeance and executed his threat, when at the suggestion of Sixtus IV he wrote his Vit! In it he paints his enemy as cruel, and an archenemy of science. For centuries it influenced historical opinions until critical research proved otherwise. In other places party spirit is evident, especially when he treats of the condition of the Church. Notwithstanding, his Lives of the Popes is a work of no small merit, for it is the first systematic handbook of papal history. Platina felt the need of critical research, but shirked the examination of details. By the end of 1474 or the beginning of 1475 Platina offered his manuscript to Pope Sixtus IV; it is still preserved in the Vatican Library. The pope's acceptance may cause surprise, but it is probable he was ignorant of its contents except insofar as it concerned his own pontificate up to November, 1474. After the death of Giandrea Bussi, Bishop of Aleria, the pope appointed Platina librarian with a yearly salary of 120 ducats and an official residence in the Vatican. Dialogo della giostra fatta in Trivigi l’anno MDXCVII. (Leg.con:) MANUZIO, Aldo. Il perfetto gentil’huomo. Venezia 1584,

The Blue Annals - Part I & II bound in One
Motilal Banarsidass - CONDITION: NEW -- BINDING: Hardcover ~ Condition: NEW ~ This book is a landmark in the historical literature of Tibet composed by a well known scholar and translator Gos lo-tsa-ba-gZon-nu dpal (1392-1481 A D). It is the main source of information for all later historical compilations in the Land of Snows. This work is invaluable inasmuch as it establishes a firm chronology of events of Tibetan history and works out in detail the list of the names of famous religious teachers and their spiritual lineage. The work is divided into fifteen chapters, each dedicated to the history of a particular school or sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It provides a comparative study of the chronological data given by T'ang Annals, Blue Annals, and Tun-huang chronicles. The Blue Annals appears to be a faithful reproduction of the list given in the T'ang Annals with minor differences. The book concludes with the portrayal of the origin, etc. of the communities of the four schools. It contains indexes for Sutras and Sastras, personal names and book titles and personal names (Tibetan), etc.EXCERPTS FROM REVIEWSThe work is very important for a true understanding of Tibetan Buddhism, its tantric and magical beliefs and their integration into Buddhism. The book is a noteworthy contribution to Buddhist history, Tibetan Buddhist history in particular. The world of learning is under a deep debt of gratitude to George Roerich, who undertook to translate and edit this large tome, Indica.-J VelinkarThe Blue Annals is based on the work by a well-known Tibetan scholar GOs lo-tsa-ba gZon-nu cpal (1392-1481 A D) and establishes a firm chronology of historical and religious works in Tibetan.Divided into fifteen chapters each dedicated to the history of a particular sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the work brings out the spiritual lineage of the various teachers. Platina, Bartholomaeus Sacchi de.
Vitae pontificum.
Anton Koberger, Nurnberg: 1481, August 11. - Folio. 293 x 203mm. [a10,b-6,s8,t6,v8.] [a1/a2? mounted]. 128ff. Another edition?] have been cut and are pasted to the verso of the endpaper without text loss ( their versos are blank),the first leaf of text is pasted to the fly-leaf at it's inner margin; a few occ. pin worm holes in blank margins, repaired tear in last leaf. Rubricated throughout with a 5 line red initial 'M' on the first leaf, 14-lie initial 'N; on first text leaf with white decoration. "Bartolomeo Platina, originally named Sacchi, was born at Piadena (Platina in Latin), near Mantua, in 1421; he died at Rome, 1481. In 1457, he went to Florence, and studied under the Greek scholar Argyropulos. In 1462 he proceeded to Rome, probably in the suite of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga. After Pius II had reorganized the College of Abbreviators (1463), and increased the number to seventy, Platina, in May 1464, was elected a member. When Paul II abolished the ordinances of Pius, Platina with the other new members was deprived of his office. Angered by this, he wrote a pamphlet insolently demanding from the pope the recall of his restrictions. When called upon to justify himself he answered with insolence and was imprisoned in the Castle of SantÕ Angelo, being released after four months on condition that he remain at Rome. In February 1468, with about twenty other humanists, he was again imprisoned on suspicion of heresy and of conspiring against the life of the pope. After his release on July 7, 1469, he expected to be again in the employ of Paul II, who, however, declined his services. Platina threatened vengeance and executed his threat, when at the suggestion of Sixtus IV he wrote his Vit¾ Pontificum Platin¾ historici liber de vita Christi ac omnium pontificum qui hactenus ducenti fuere et XX (Venice, 1479). He also instructed him to make a collection of the chief privileges of the Roman Church."[CE] Goff P769. Hain/Copinger 13047*. GfT 1152. Pell Ms 9503 (9325). CIBN P-444. Aquilon 542. Arnoult 1208. Littleton, Sir Thomas; Houard, [David] ed & tr
Anciennes Loix des Francois, Conservees Dans les Coutumes Angloises
Littleton, Sir Thomas [d.1481] - Houard, David [1725-1802], Editor and Translator. Anciennes Loix des Francois, Conservees Dans les Coutumes Angloises, Recueillies par Littleton; Avec des Observations Historiques & Critiques, Ou l'on Fait Voir que les Coutumes & Usages Suivis Anciennement en Normandie, Sont les Memes que Ceux qui Etoient en Viguer dans Toute la France sous les Deux Premieres Races de nos Rois. Ouvrage Egalement Utile pour L'Etude de Notre Ancienne Histoire & Pour L'Intelligence du Droit Coutumier de Chaque Province. Rouen: De L'Imprimerie de Richard Lallement, 1766. Two volumes. Main text in parallel columns. Quarto (9-3/4" x 8"). Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering pieces to spines, endpapers renewed, edges rouged. Some chipping to fore-edge of dedication leaf, which was been rehinged, small faint stains to a few leaves, interiors otherwise fresh. Ex-library. Tiny stamp to two leaves. A handsome set. * Only edition. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with land tenure and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work is considered a landmark because it was the first treatise to renounce the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of a set of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books, and when necessary, hypothetical cases. Houard was a member of Parliament and respected scholar of the customary law of Normandy. His works include the four-volume Dictionnaire Analytique, Historique, Etymologique, Critique et Interpretive de la Coutume de Normandie (1780-82). As the title of Anciennes Loix indicates, Houard believed that Littleton's treatise preserved and developed a body of Norman customary laws dating from the time of the conquest. In effect, it was both a record of early Norman law and a contribution to Norman jurisprudence. Littleton's text is accompanied by a French translation and numerous annotations. Gregorius IX
Decretales cum glossa. [edito da Franciscus Moneliensis]
incunaboli, Venezia 1481 - In-folio (428x286 mm.), [314] c. l’ultima bianca.

PLATINA, BARTHOLOMAEUS SACCHI DE.
VITAE PONTIFICUM. [LIBER DE VITA CHRISTI: AC PONTIFICUM OMNIU(M)... NURNBERG: ANTON KOBERGER, 1481, AUGUST 11.
Folio. 293 x 203mm. [a10,b-6,s8,t6,v8.] [a1/a2? mounted]. 128ff. Another edition?] have been cut and are pasted to the verso of the endpaper without text loss ( their versos are blank),the first leaf of text is pasted to the fly-leaf at it's inner margin; a few occ. pin worm holes in blank margins, repaired tear in last leaf. When called upon to justify himself he answered with insolence and was imprisoned in the Castle of Sant Angelo, being released after four months on condition that he remain at Rome. In February 1468, with about twenty other humanists, he was again imprisoned on suspicion of heresy and of conspiring against the life of the pope...After his release on July 7, 1469, he expected to be again in the employ of Paul II, who, however, declined his services. Platina threatened vengeance and executed his threat, when at the suggestion of Sixtus IV he wrote his Vit Pontificum Platin historici liber de vita Christi ac omnium pontificum qui hactenus ducenti fuere et XX (Venice, 1479). He also instructed him to make a collection of the chief privileges of the Roman Church."[CE] Goff P769. Hain/Copinger 13047*. GfT 1152. Pell Ms 9503 (9325). CIBN P-444. Aquilon 542. Arnoult 1208. Eleven 10-12 line foliated initials of delicate red and blue heightened with white on a background of burnished gold inset with complex foliage commencing each commentary and ten large illuminated initials 5-9 lines high, of blue and red with delicate liquid gold foliated patterning at the beginning of the first chapter of each. The opening illumination is very lightly rubbed in one or two small areas with very minor paint loss, but extremely attractive, a few tiny wormholes neatly repaired to first and last pages. A very good, clean, fresh and large ms. in handsome late 18th-C straight-grained red morocco gilt, covers delicately framed with gilt rolltools and the spine richly gilt in 6 compartments, lettered in the second and third, attributed to Bozerian. Jean Budé's partially erased ms ex-libris dated 1481 on fol. 190, his arms at foot of first page, Nicolas Thoynard of Orleans' 17th-C ms ex-libris on second preliminary leaf, 'hic liber est Nicolai Thoynardi Aurelianensis', from the libraries of ?M. Loget (procureur-generale of Aguesseau, by inheritance), Joseph Barrois, sold by him to Bertram, 4th Earl of Ashburnham (his sale, Sotheby's 1901, to Belin), sold at Sotheby's 9 Dec 1909, Kundig of Geneva, thence to William Foyle in 1948, his sale, Christie's, 11 July 2000, to H.P. Kraus. An artistically lovely manuscript, commissioned by or for Jean Budé with an outstanding provenance. In the beautiful opening miniatures, St Paul is shown with his sword (in the first), enthroned against a backdrop of fleurs-de-lys, the symbol of French kingship, entrusting a messenger boy - in fact a depiction of Jean Budé's even more celebrated son Guillaume who was then 14 - with a recognisably mediaeval document with seal; through the open window, the messenger is then shown carrying his charge over fields to the the far-away land of the Galatians. The Galatians are gathered in the temple, listening to a richly-dressed orator, labelled 'Le Juif', presumably one of the Jewish converts to Christianity preaching against St Paul's teaching. The sense of distance and 'otherness' are represented subtly in the gold frame surrounding the miniatures, but also directly - St Paul is presented seated beneath a gothic frame of small-vaulted arches, while the Galatians are shown beneath an oriental dome. Each miniature is also, unusually, very thoroughly labelled. The rustic character of the carefully-rendered faces and the attentive details of dress reflect the Northern French, probably Parisian, origins of the miniature. The rich merchant by the messenger's side in the second miniature almost certainly represents Jean Budé, for or by whom, the ms was commissioned. The framing, style, and inscriptions of the miniature would suggest that it was produced by an artist near to the Maître François in Paris, where Budé obtained many of his important collection of mss. The present artist is perhaps connected with one of the two individual hands to emerge from this milieu around the 1480s; the Master of the Cardinal of Bourbon and the Master of Jacques de Besançon. The initials in this mss are of particularly high quality, and are distinguished by their precision and care, as well as by the generally superb state of conservation. The very large foliate initials opening each commentary, with their intertwined swirling leaves filling in the space between the letters and the burnished gold frame, are of an earlier style, and very typical of Books of Hours from Northern France. It is unusual to find them combined with the much more contemporary initials at the beginning of each first chapter which - in their use of liquid (rather than burnished) gold and silver - reflect the styles of Budé's own day and show remarkable delicacy and refinement. St Paul had founded the Christian community in Galatia, which after his departure tended to the teaching that in order to become a Christian, one must first undertake to live according to Talmudic Law, a belief St Paul decisively rejected. In his Epistle, he rebukes the Galatians, and calls them back to his guiding principles (which was based on the idea of justification by faith and works, and not by adherence to the Law). The author of the text, here identified only as 'Haymon' is now thought to be the scholar Haymo of Auxerre, who died in 865/6, and who was St Remy's tutor. This exegetical work was very popular throughout the middle ages, and was printed in 1519 (Strasbourg), 1528 and 1529 (Cologne). (Over a quarter of the manuscripts in Jean Budé's extensive library were theological). The text opens with a list of contents; the volume comprises St Paul's Epistles to the Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians,Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, and Hebrews (textually by far the longest part). Guigard vol II p.102. Budé's arms appear on the illuminated title page, however as usual his manuscript colophon has been scraped, though it is still possible to make out the date and the remains of his signature. Jean Clouet's portrait of Guillaume Budé shows him to be in possession of a very large Gallic nose worthy of Cyrano and shared in the title illumination by the young messenger and probably his earliest portrait. The wealthy merchant by his side is most probably his father, Jean, whose portrait we have been unable to trace. The Budé family had an extensive and distinguished library, over sixty volumes of which have been identified (see: H. Omont, "Notices sur les collections de manusrits de Jean et Guillaume Budé" in Bulletin de la societe de l'histoire de Paris et de l'ile de France 12, 1885). Nicolas Thoynarde of Olreans was most probably the seigneur de Villamblain (1629-1706), who was a distinguished scholar, scientist and numismatist, and friend to the book collector Emeric Bigot and the Royal Librarian, Jacques Dupuy. Many of his books were left to the Bibliotheque Royale. Its next documented owner was the French ms collector Joseph Barrois, whose extensive collection was purchased in 1849 by the fourth Earl of Ashburnham for £6,000. Ashburnham was "one of the greatest and most ardent of English book collectors" (Fletcher, English Book Collectors), and his library "ranked among the first in the kingdom" (ibid.). At the time of his death, his collection included 4,000 mss; much of the Barrois collection went to the Bibliotheque Nationale. Jean-Claude Bozerian was the most fashionable Paris binder of the turn of the 19thC, and the present binding would certainly have been one of his de-luxe productions. An altogether luxurious book. $4,500. ANTONINUS Sanctus
Gregorius IX
Decretales cum glossa. [edito da Franciscus Moneliensis]
incunaboli, Venezia 1481 In-folio (428x286 mm.), [314] c. l’ultima bianca. IGI 4457; BMC V 302; Goff G 453.
