LITTLETON, SIR THOMAS

Littleton's Tenures, in French and English. London, 1671.
Littleton, Sir Thomas [d. 1481]. Littleton's Tenures, In French and English. With an Alphabetical Table of the Principal Matters Therein Contained. London: Printed by John Streater, James Flesher and Henry Twyford, Assigns of Richard Atkins, and Edward Atkins, 1671. [xxii], 436 (i.e. 426), [2] pp. Main text in parallel columns. 12mo. (3" x 5-1/4"). Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards and spine. Light rubbing to extremities, small chip to head of spine, rear joint just starting at head, front hinge cracked but secure, rear pastedown loose and worn around the edges. Clean tear to fore edges of a few leaves with no loss to text. Offsetting to margins of endleaves, toning to a few text leaves, interior otherwise fresh. Ex-private library. Armorial bookplate of the library of the Earls of Macclesfield to front pastedown, the library's small embossed stamp to title page, small shelf labels to spine. A lovely unsophisticated copy. $2,000. * First edition with parallel texts in English and Law French. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. Holdsworth, A History of English Law II:573. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:458 (119).

ANTONINUS Sanctus

M.cccc.lxxvij"; f. 366r.: "Registrum 2e partis…". - Esemplare stupendo, impresso con somma cura su carta forte, a grandi margini, immacolato (solo il f. s8 della prima parte presenta sensibili macchie d'umidità). Gregorius IX

Decretales cum glossa. [edito da Franciscus Moneliensis]
incunaboli, Venezia 1481 In-folio (428x286 mm.), [314] c. l’ultima bianca. "Bartolomeo Platina, originally named Sacchi, was born at Piadena (Platina in Latin), near Mantua, in 1421; he died at Rome, 1481. In 1457, he went to Florence, and studied under the Greek scholar Argyropulos. In 1462 he proceeded to Rome, probably in the suite of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga. After Pius II had reorganized the College of Abbreviators (1463), and increased the number to seventy, Platina, in May 1464, was elected a member. When Paul II abolished the ordinances of Pius, Platina with the other new members was deprived of his office. Angered by this, he wrote a pamphlet insolently demanding from the pope the recall of his restrictions. When called upon to justify himself he answered with insolence and was imprisoned in the Castle of Sant' Angelo, being released after four months on condition that he remain at Rome. In February 1468, with about twenty other humanists, he was again imprisoned on suspicion of heresy and of conspiring against the life of the pope...After his release on July 7, 1469, he expected to be again in the employ of Paul II, who, however, declined his services. Platina threatened vengeance and executed his threat, when at the suggestion of Sixtus IV he wrote his Vitæ Pontificum Platinæ historici liber de vita...<!-

Mandeville starb 1372

Littleton, Sir Thomas [d.

Littleton's Tenures, in French and English. London, 1671.
1481] Littleton's Tenures, In French and English. AQUINAS, Thomas

Super quarto libro sententiarum
1481 1481 AQUINAS, Thomas. Super quarto libro sententiarum. Venice: Johannes de Colonia, Jenson et Socii, [Johannes Herbort de Seligenstadt] 24 June 1481. Small folio (8 by 12-1/2 inches), contemporary full paneled brown calf, raised bands, elaborately blind-tooled covers, metal catches. Collation: a-z10 A-H10 (a1 and H10 blank). $22,000. 15th-century Venetian printing of Thomas Aquinas' early and important theological commentary, with much rubrication, decoration, and a beautifully illuminated 16-line initial letter, printed in a Jensonian type, bound in elaborately blind-tooled contemporary calf. A handsome incunable. Peter Lombard, a chief precursor to medieval scholasticism, wrote his Four Books of Sentences in the mid-12th century to deal "in an orderly fashion with the main themes of Christian theology. It eventually became the basic textbook for the teaching of theology in the universities. Therefore the works of major scholastic theologians usually include a Commentary on the Sentences" (González I:314-15). Aquinas' commentary on Lombard, written circa 1250, stands among "his first important theological writings" and is one of "the immediate forerunners of the Summa Theologica," his masterpiece (Catholic Encyclopedia). The work was printed as early as 1469 by Peter Schöffer in Mainz (Proctor 87). The first leaf of text in this printing features a beautiful, 16-line initial "M" illuminated in gold, filled with light green and mauve foliate decoration surrounding an armorial shield. Delicate white flowers on blue and red backgrounds decorate the corners of the "M," and intricate red and blue foliate branches frame the first column. Red and blue marginal extensions, lombardic initials and paragraph marks embellish the entire Latin text, which is set in a Jensonian type. Johannes Herbort's printing establishment was in its day one of the largest in Europe, and took possession of Nicolaus Jenson's typefaces after the printing pioneer's death in 1480 (Jenson's device, in red, follows the colophon). The volume is bound in contemporary paneled Westphalian calf, with the central panels of both covers divided into lozenges and triangles by intersecting triple fillets, filled with such emblems as lions rampant and the Agnus Dei. BMC V:301. Goff T171. Hain 1484. Proctor 4680. See Thacher 337. Contemporary and later Latin annotations. Ink stamps. Library bookplate. Embossed library stamp to a2, slightly affecting text; leaves a2 and c10 with minor marginal paper restoration. Repair to leaf E8. Scattered dampstaining. Minor worming to first several and last several gatherings and to boards. Expected wear to boards. Large fragment of spine present, with library labels; bands still strong. Metal catches on front board, remnants of clasps on rear board. A rare and significant work, finely printed and beautifully illuminated. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PHILELPHUS, Franciscus,

Orationes... cum quibusdam aliis eiusdem Operis. No pl., no printer (Basle, Amerbach, not after 1498). 4to. Rom. type. 182 lvs. 40 lines. Old green boards.
. Copy with good margins of this intereating work with Philelphus speeches at funerals and marriages, various speeches including 8 speeches to the Pope Sixtus, his "Rhetorices Aristotelis ad Alexander de causis civilibus praecepta" and "Plutarchi Cheronensis Apothegmata ad Trajanum" and "Plutarchi Laconica". Both the Aristotle and the Plutarch are translated by Francesco Filelfo (1398-1481), Italian humanist. He conducted his early studies in grammar, rhetoric and Latin at Padua where he acquired so great a reputation that he was invited to teach at Venice. Residence at Constantinople as secretary to the Venetian consul-general enabled him to learn Greek. Returning to Italy, he settled in Florence, but a violent animosity developed between him and Cosimo de" Medici, causing him to move first to Siena and then to Milan. Here he celebrated his princely patrons in panegyrics and abused their enemies with invective. Finally, as and old man of seventy-seven he went to Rome, but managed to upset Sixtus IV and had to leave the city. He died in Florence at the age of 83, where he had been invited to profess Greek. Filelfo was undoubtedly one of the greatest literary personalities of the 15th century, he had numerous disciples and left important works in poetry and prose. - The copy at Leipzig is dated 1498 by the rubricator. This work is known in 2 different editions, with the same date. The first one, of 70 leaves, has only 13 illustrations. The present one has 29 woodcut illustrations, 12 taken from the first edition and 16 new illustrations. This edition has 11 quires, the first 4 quires had been augmented, the the registro is taken from the first edition. Illustrated by 29 woodcuts within architectural border and representing the sybils, Plato, Jesus Christ, the Nativity, St. John; Plato’s portrait is repeated for the prophet Osea. Half of the 20th century brown morocco, gilt fillets on boards with gilt tools on corners; spine decorated, gilt edges. Some leaves a little remargined, the last 2 quires washed. The work contains a treatise on the differences between St. Hyeronimus and St. Augustine and some poems attributed to Proba Centona, that show the harmony between the Classical culture and the Holy Scriptures. The edition is preceded by a dedicacy written by the printer and addressed to the pope Sixtus IV. Expositio in epistolas Pauli , in Latin, MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
Paris 1481 Folio. ff. [ii] 193. [19, 2-248], complete. Lettre Bâtarde, double column ruled in red, 34 lines in brown ink in a fine and clear hand, running titles, ruled in red, rubrics and small initials in red and yellow, occasional side notes, vertical signature catchwords. Full-page illuminated t.p. comprising multicoloured floral and gilt foliage border enclosing double column ILLUMINATED NARRATIVE MINIATURES BY AN ARTIST FROM THE CIRCLE OF THE MAITRE FRANCOIS depicting St Paul enthroned in a Gothic palace presenting his epistle to a messenger boy seen running across the fields through an open window, in the second miniature he delivers it to the erring Galatians, shown listening to a debate between a rabbinical figure and a Galatian, in a domed temple very richly gilt; 10-line gilt capital 'P', decorated with blue in the Lombard style; arms of Jean Budé (silver shield a bit oxydised) at foot. Eleven 10-12 line foliated initials of delicate red and blue heightened with white on a background of burnished gold inset with complex foliage commencing each commentary and ten large illuminated initials 5-9 lines high, of blue and red with delicate liquid gold foliated patterning at the beginning of the first chapter of each. The opening illumination is very lightly rubbed in one or two small areas with very minor paint loss, but extremely attractive, a few tiny wormholes with neat old repairs to first and last pages. A very good, clean, fresh and large ms. In handsome late 18th-C straight-grained red morocco gilt, covers delicately framed with gilt rolltools and the spine richly gilt in 6 compartments, lettered in the second and third, attributed to Bozerian. Jean Budé's partially erased ms ex-libris dated 1481 on fol. 190, his arms at foot of first page, Nicolas Thoynard of Orleans' 17th-C ms ex-libris on second preliminary leaf, 'hic liber est Nicolai Thoynardi Aurelianensis', from the libraries of ?M. Loget (procureur-generale of Aguesseau, by inheritance), Joseph Barrois, sold by him to Bertram, 4th Earl of Ashburnham (his sale, Sotheby's 1901, to Belin), sold at Sotheby's 9 Dec 1909, Kundig of Geneva, thence to William Foyle in 1948, his sale, Christie's, 11 July 2000, to H.P. Kraus. An artistically lovely manuscript, commissioned by or for Jean Budé with an outstanding provenance. In the beautiful opening miniatures, St Paul is shown with his sword (in the first), enthroned against a backdrop of fleurs-de-lys, the symbol of French kingship, entrusting a messenger boy - in fact a depiction of Jean Budé's even more celebrated son Guillaume who was then 14 - with a recognisably mediaeval document with seal; through the open window, the messenger is then shown carrying his charge over fields to the the far-away land of the Galatians. The Galatians are gathered in the temple, listening to a richly-dressed orator, labelled 'Le Juif', presumably one of the Jewish converts to Christianity preaching against St Paul's teaching. The sense of distance and 'otherness' are represented subtly in the gold frame surrounding the miniatures, but also directly - St Paul is presented seated beneath a gothic frame of small-vaulted arches, while the Galatians are shown beneath an oriental dome. Each miniature is also, unusually, very thoroughly labelled. The rustic character of the carefully-rendered faces and the attentive details of dress reflect the Northern French, probably Parisian, origins of the miniature. The rich merchant by the messenger's side in the second miniature almost certainly represents Jean Budé, for or by whom, the ms was commissioned. The framing, style, and inscriptions of the miniature would suggest that it was produced by an artist near to the Maître François in Paris, where Budé obtained many of his important collection of mss. The present artist is perhaps connected with one of the two individual hands to emerge from this milieu around the 1480s; the Master of the Cardinal of Bourbon and the Master of Jacques de Besanço

A Catalogue of Incunabula and Manuscripts in the Army Medical Library.
New York, n.d. xii,361pp. 12 plates in b/w. Title and Name indexes. Cloth.*The incunable collection in the Army Medical Library, though surpassed by the Boston Medical Library's collection both in total number and in several classes of items, is on the whole of equal importance for the strictly medical historian. It is unrivaled in this country for the period before 1481. (from the introduction). Especially the collection of oriental manuscripts is of interest here.
