LUTHER]. COCHLAEUS, Johannes.

Septiceps Lutherus, ubique sibi, suis scriptis, co[n]trarius, in Visitatione[m] Saxonica[m], p. D.D. Ioa[n]. Cocleu[m], editus. Leipzig, Valentinus Schumann, X Maias Calendas 1529. 4to. Full-page woodcut engraving on title-page, showing Luther with 7 heads, several historiated initials and woodcut borders. Old boards.
(6), (64) ll. Adams C-2287; BMC STC German, p. 250; Campbell Dodgson, Cat. of Early German and Flemish Woodcuts II, p. 413, no. 10; Pegg, German Reformation Pamphlets in Libraries of Great Britain and Ireland 697; Spahn 61a; NUC (2 copies); VD 16, C-4386 (at least 3 copies). Rare first edition of Cochlaeus's polemic caricature of Luther. Johannes Cochlaeus (German name Dobneck; 1479-1552) was one of the most prominent German polemicists against the Reformation in Germany. He disagreed with Luther's opinions on the sacrament of the ordination of priests, the Eucharist, the relationship between free will and grace, etc., and decided to devote his life to fighting the Reformation in order to perserve the unity of the church. He wrote over two hundred histories and pamphlets. In the present pamphlet, Cochlaeus sets out to convert the changes and developments in Luther's thinking over the years into, often farfetched, contradictions. According to Cochlaeus, the young "Doctor Martinus" still held acceptable opinions, but this changes during "Lutherus" years in Worms. "(Luther) Ecclesiastes" represents the total rupture with the Roman Catholic Church. Via "(Luther) Suermus," a head with swarming bees, symbolizing the furious ragings of the reformers, Luther's personality develops a "Barrabas" streak as instigator of war and looting, before settling as "Visitator." On the woodcut, the Barrabas and Visitator heads have been interchanged. Cochlaeus structures his work around a dialogue between these seven heads on different theological issues. The reply of his Protestant opponents was that if the Roman Catholic Church already failed to suppress a single-headed Luther, a seven-headed Luther would be entirely invincible. The present copy is the first edition. The work also appeared in German in 1529, and went through several editions in that language. Library stamps on inside front cover, endleaf and title-page, some waterstaining; marginal annotations and corrections as well as textual deletions in brown ink; some browning.

CAMILLO, Giulio.

113 (of 114, with the penultimate errata leaf but lacks the final blank) + 48ff. Woodcut devices on title-pages, commentary printed round text in first work, red woodcut diagram printed over text on C4r in second work, title-page of second work a little browned, a few minor spots and stains, in English eighteenth century sprinkled calf, gilt spine, thin decorative border round sides. Two attractively printed works. The first is the first edition of Daniello's translation of Virgil's Georgics into blank verse, printed in the same year as his version of Virgil's Aeneid, book two. He also wrote a treatise on poetry and published commentaries on Petrarch and Dante. Giulio Camillo (1479-1544) was an expert in Greek, Latin, Hebrew and several oriental languages; but his passion was the Cabala and ancient Egyptian philosophy. He taught logic for a while at Bologna and spent many years at the court of Francois Ier where the king gave him a great deal of money to perfect his new system for teaching languges. He died in Milan.

This copy belonged to Sir Richard Worsley (1751-1805), antiquary, traveller and founder of the 'Museum Worsleyanum', the first part of which catalogue he published in 1798 at the extraordinary price of ?2,887.4s., excluding binding costs. The exhibits comprised a remarkable collection of statues, reliefs and gems which he had assembled on his tour to Greece, Troy, the C rimea and Italy between 1785 and 1787. AUGUSTINUS DE ANCONA

Woodcut border on title-page, decorated initials. Old boards.
      (152) ll. Graesse II, p. 206; Pegg, German Reformation Pamphlets in Libraries of Great Britain and Ireland 682; Schmidt, Rep. bibl. strasbourgeois I, 200; VD 16, C-4319 (at least 3 copies); not in Adams; BMC STC French; NUC. Very rare first edition of this disputation by Cochlaeus (Dobneck) against Luther. Johannes Cochlaeus (1479-1552) is known for his unremitting zeal in disputing the cause of the Reformation. He studied in Cologne, Nuremberg, and Ferrara, and had many contacts in humanist circles. He disagreed out of principle with Luther's opinions of the sacrament of priests, salvation, the relation between free will and grace, etc., and from 1520 onward devoted his life to preserving the unity of the church. He participated in all the major conventions, for instance Worms, Augsburg, and Trent, and wrote over two hundred histories and pamphlets. His exemplary lifestyle, his thorough knowledge of theological issues, and his willingness to compromise made him a keyfigure in the renewal of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany. In the present work, Cochlaeus quotes 154 statements by Luther, mainly about the relation between the law and good works and the Eucharist, and gives the Roman Catholic viewpoint. Library stamps on inside front cover, endleaves, title-page A3 recto; staining on m1v and m2r; marginal annotations and underlinings in brown ink.An attractive copy with broad margins.

IL DRIADEO D'AMORE.
(In fine, colophon:) Florentie, (Nicolaus Laurentii Alamanus), die tertia Aprelis M.CCCC.LXXVIIII. IGI 8212. Goff P1109. Brunet IV, 967. Gamba 1140.

Eusebius Caesariensis.

HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA. [Translated by Rufinus].
Johann Schall. Mantua July 1479 Folio. ff.(172), complete with the final blank leaf. Roman type. 19th c. full red morocco, neatly rebacked to match, with the old gilt spine laid down. Numerous marginal "references" in an early hand. Front pastedown with a small leather bookplate of Eduardo J. Bullrich; and a paper bookplate reading, "Francisci Caesaris Augusti Munificentia."Small round ownership stamps at bottom blank margin of the first leaf of text. Eusebius (circa 260 to circa 340) is considered the father of Church history and this text is the most important ecclesiastic history produced in ancient times. This particular volume is an interesting specimen from the press of Johann Schall, the printer-physician of Mantua. It is the only known work from the second press of this printer, who established his first press at Mantua in 1475. He is supposed to have been one of the German printers hired by Adamo Micheli, who introduced the art of printing into Mantua. This is also the only book from this press printed in a fine, large Roman type; one of two books with a metrical colophon and the printer's name; and the first book to have printed catchwords on each page. "The volumes issued from his press are of equal beauty and rarity; and it is seldom that we see a more eloquent specimen of ancient typography than that (Eusebius) which is now before us." [LUTHER].

Eusebius Caesariensis.

HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA. [Translated by Rufinus].
Johann Schall. July, Mantua 1479 Eusebius (circa 260 to circa 340) is considered the father of Church history and this text is the most important ecclesiastic history produced in ancient times. "The volumes issued from his press are of equal beauty and rarity; and it is seldom that we see a more eloquent specimen of ancient typography than that (Eusebius) which is now before us." Thomas Frognall Dibdin. Goff E127; BMC VII 933; HC 6711. Hain Copinger 6711. Folio. ff.(172), complete with the final blank leaf. Roman type. 19th c. full red morocco, neatly rebacked to match, with the old gilt spine laid down. BONAVENTURA.

SERMONES DE TEMPORE ET DE SANCTIS. ZWOLLE, (JOHANNES DE VOLLENHOE), 1479.
4to. Later calf, red and blue mottled edges. All initials supplied in red, rubricated throughout. (340) lvs. First edition of a pseudo-Bonaventura, directly starting on recto of first leaf with the index: "Registrum sermonum et de tempore et de sanctis cum communi sanctorum at populum divini Bonaventure Cardinalis, devoti et seraphici sacre theologie professoris eximij feliciter incipit". The present collection of sermons was ascribed to the very popular S. Bonaventura who lived in the 13th century, but they were actually written by Servasanctus Faventinus, one of Bonaventura's contemporaries. The present work is one of the first printed dated books published at Zwolle, printed at the first press in the city. In the earliest printing period at Zwolle two types were used, called Zwolle type 1 and Zwolle type 2 by Hellinga, or also De Vollenhoe type as one publication printed in the Zwolle type 2 mentions in the colophon the name of Johannes de Vollenhoe. The present incunable, which was always ascribed to Pieter van Os, is now ascribed to Johannes de Vollenhoe, since it is printed in the Zwolle type 2. Only very little is known about De Vollenhoe, it is possible that he was working for a financial syndicate. It was shown by the Hellinga's that Van Os van Breda was connected with De Vollenhoe's press from 1479. The printing is of a fine quality, suggesting that experienced workmen used to handle the press. The book is well produced, and printed in Gothic type in two columns, with 39 lines to a page. All initials are supplied in red and the book is nicely rubricated throughout. An extra folio leaf is bound in at the beginning of our copy, with manuscript notes in Latin, in an old hand, and some ms. notes are also present in the margins of the book. Good, but rather used copy, with ample margins.- (Binding rubbed and sl. dam., sl. loosening in spine; the 4 blanks lacking; waterst.). GRATIANUS ( DE CLUSIO).

Decretum. (Incipit concordia discordantium canonum).
Venetiis, Johannis Colonie agrippinensis & Johannisqz Manthe, 1479. Loose incunable leaf, large folio (29 x 42,5 cm) in portfolio. With the Glossa ordinaria of Bartholomaeus Brixiensis. Edited by Petrus Albinianus Trecius. Leaf e6 (unsigned) of the Venetian impression by Johann von Köln and Johann Manthen. Probably not printed on December 11th 1479 as stated, but (according to Goff) January 3d 1480. Beautifully printed (like a manuscript) in black and red. Rubricated in red and blue and with red and blue lombards. Text 2 columns, 57 (recto and verso) lines. Commentary 2 columns, 73 lines. Many two-line initials and one four-line initial in red. Gratian, the father of systematic study of canon law, lived in the 12th century at Bologna, the medieval centre of civil and canon law. He was born in the late 11th century in Central Italy and died before 1159. He initiated a new branch of learning, the study of church law as a discipline distinct from theology. His compilation, the Concordantia discordantium canonum ( later called the Decretum) tried to reconcile earlier contradictory canons by scholastic methods. The Decretum (supplemented with later commentaries) remained the basis of the Corpus Iuris Canonici (the Corpus of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church) throughout the next centuries. It was only with the codification of 1917 that it was set out of use. Lower margin with stains and a small hole (2 letters) repaired, but otherwise a well kept and very nice example of a fine Venetian incunable.

DE GRUYTRODE (GRUITROEDE) JACOBUS

SPECULUM AUREUM ANIME PECCATRICIS PARIGI ULRICH GERING 1479 (CIRCA)
1 volume in-quarto (207 mm x 143 mm) 1 ff bb (non coevo), 42 ff nn, 1 ff bb (non coevo). Testo rubricato in rosso.
