      - A photolithographic facsimile of the two monumental wall maps by Martin Waldseemüller (1470-1521), published in 1507 and 1516. For each map, the facsimile shows a reduced overview of the entire map followed by original-size reproductions of the 12 woodcut sections from which it is assembled, all reproduced from the only surviving copies, in the library of Wolfegg castle in Württemberg. Plate 20a shows the contemporary manuscript tracing of one section of the 1516 map, with the topographic names and other texts written in, showing the extensive intended revisions to the original block. The present facsimile was prepared by Franz von Wieser of the Universität Innsbruck für historische Geographie and Joseph Fischer, the Jesuit priest who discovered both maps in 1901. The skilful reproduction was executed by the O. Consée art istitute in Munich. Prince Johannes Waldburg-Wolfegg sold the 1507 map, the oldest to include the name "America," for ten million dollars in 2003.A good copy. Binding somewhat worn, mainly on the spine and corners. PAULUS DE SANCTA MARIA.
Scrutinium scripturarum.
GW M29971. Goff P-201. BMC I, 54. BMC II, 323. Goff M262. Superbe exemplaire dans une reliure strictement contemporaine. More details and pictures on request

Reisch Gregorius (1470-1525)
Margarita Philosophica

It was the first serious attempt to set the law down in systematic shape, and served as a model to such writers as Brooke and Rolle. According to Boersma, Fitzherbert accomplished "nothing less than to abridge all notes of significant cases at common law." In Law Library Journal, Graham and Heckel refer to this work as the "book that 'made' the common law" (51: 100-101). Sir Frederick Pollock [1845-1937] was one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum.
Illuminated miniature of the Annunciation.
      - Florence: c.1470-1480. 127 c 187 mm, verso blank. Framed. This glorious leaf is unmistakably in the style of Francesco di Antonio del Chierico, one of the finest Florentine illuminators of the period. Garzelli reproduces several miniatures of the Annunciation and one miniature in particular, (now in Modena, Bib. Estense, cod. lat 855f, 13v, see fig. 212 in Garzoni's catalogue) shows several close parallels with this leaf. The style and attitude of the Virgin is especially close, as is the treatment of the window. Also, in the border, there are similarities in the figure of God the father, the urns supported by putti, and the floral motifs. Another artist, Francesco Rosselli, has also been noticed as have stylistic similarities to the central figure in this leaf in his Annunciation in Bib. Vat, barb. Lat 382, f. 15v (see Garzoni ff.536.) The arms of the Cresci family are in the lower border. See Annarosa Garzelli, Miniature Fiorentina del Rinascimento 1440-1525, Florence 1985. Cataloguing derived from the Maggs Bros. description. Full description and images available on my website.

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A SMALL HISTOR...
Paris, ca. 1470s 132 x 88 mm. (5 1/2 x 3 1/2"). Single column, 16 lines of text in a fine early bâtarde book hand. Attractively matted. Rubrics in red, RECTO WITH A FULL BORDER filled with swirling blue and gold acanthus leaves, sprays of pink, red, and blue flowers on leafy stems, and numerous burnished gold bezants, the border INHABITED WITH A LARGE GOLDEN MOTH AND A CHARMING WINGED GROTESQUE, THE SAME SIDE WITH A FOUR-LINE HISTORIATED "L" FEATURING ST. LUKE WITH HIS BULL. IN FINE, FRESH CONDITION, with only the most trivial imperfections--the gold glittering, the paint rich, and the margins extremely ample. The recto of this leaf contains key Bible readings appropriate for the celebration of the Annunciation. The texts commence with John 1:13-14, including "the Word was made flesh." The little miniature of Luke signals a new text, beginning with Luke 1:26, telling the story of the annunciation by the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin, which continues on the verso. Luke is portrayed as a venerable elder with beard and white locks, sitting at a writing table that is massive by Medieval standards. His emblem, the bull, whose body is truncated by the frame, looks on benignly. Despite the dragon wings and snake tail, a lap dog seems to have been the principal model for the furry golden grotesque below. This creature and the moth at the upper right form a triangle of animated decoration that is both skillfully executed and quite delightful. $ 2500

THOMAS D'AQUIN (Saint)
Quodlibeta duodecim disputata circa annum d(omi)ni M.CC.LXX. (EDITION INCUNABLE, UNE DES PREMIERS IMPRESSIONS ROMAINES)
      - S.l.n.d. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Medieval Monastery Scriptorium - Double Sided Leaf; miniature [miniscule psalter; incunabula] Circa 1470
[monastery Scriptorium for Noble class], 1470. circa 1470, Dutch / German. Two sided-leaf, in red, blue and black ink. Written in miniscule on vellum. 3.75" x 2.75" Anonymous; Psalters such as the one this leaf comes from were created in late medieval monastery scriptoria. Minor marginal toning, else about fine. When, in the fifteenth century, a King from the region would hold court in the numerous castles throughout his realm, the nobility would follow with their prayer books. These were intentionally manufactured on this miniature scale by the monasteries to allow the nobility to easily carry them on these journeys. This remarkably well-preserved red, blue and black ink two-sided page originated in one such psalter. Nice example of incunabula - printed artifacts originating prior to 1501. Please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. - Jeff Harvey L30A. Unknown. Near Fine. 3.75" x 2.75".

Medieval Miniature-King David
King David In Penitence - Historiated initial "U" cut from a choirbook (c.1470)
Ferrara:, c.1470.. From illuminated manuscript on vellum. Within a pink-staved initial decorated with white penwork and blue and green foliage and set against a burnished gold ground, the half length figure of King David, white-haired and bearded, wearing a girdled green robe and a tall turbaned crown, beating his breasts and his eyes raised towards the golden rays that spark to decorate the dark blue background. Some staining affecting the background, some losses to gold. Cut to shape. Mounted and framed. From the collection of Duncan Benesford-Jones. Large in size.. 113 x 128mm (overall).. This fine intial is attributable to Guglielmo Giraldi or one of his collaborators. He was the favorite illumintaor of Borso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara and was also responsible for the decoration of series of choirbooks for Ferraese churches and monasteries. The present intial is tellingly close in drapery style, gesture, and background to his work.

Danzi, Massimo

The Printed Homer: a 3, 000 Year Publishing and Translation History of the Iliad and the Odyssey
McFarland & Company. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. This work first considers who Homer might have been and then explores the when and how of the creation of the written forms of the two works. The Homeric text in classical times and in medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire, and the Homeric text, the printing press and Renaissance humanism are next taken up. The successes and failures of the many who attempted to translate the works are analyzed critically and then — a major portion of the book — all the known texts, editions and translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey from 1470 to 2000 are listed. The author considers the future of the Homeric texts and the Poet's relevance to this and future generations. Seven valuable appendices (e.g., Modernizing of Latin City Names; First Printings in Vernacular Languages), a bibliography, and an index complete the work. ISBN10: 0786438975.

AUGUSTINE, ST. (Pseudo)
Epistola ad Cyrillum de magnificentiis Hieronymi [With other tracts]
Ulrich Zell [ca 1470], Cologne - Modern blindstamped calf over wooden boards in a very attractive antique style of the period with central metal clasp (signed "GF. Köln") 4to (21:15 cm) . Only incunabular edition of these pseudo epigraphical writings attributed to St. Augustine that were printed by eminent German printer,Ulrich Zell, in Cologne around 1470. An Italian translation by Bartolomeo da Cremona appeared in Venice around 1472/74. The other tracts included are "1-9, Epistola Augustini ad Cyrillum de magnificentiis Hieronymi; 10-51a, epistola Cyrilli ad Augustinum de miraculis Hieronymi; 51a-58, epistola Hieronymi ad Susannam lapsam; 59-64, epistola Hieronymi ad Heliodorum" (BMC). A very attractive piece of early printing with rubrications and capital letters supplied in red by a contemporary hand. Although there are two worm holes towards the end of the text that affect a number of letters it is a wide margin and very fresh, unsophisticated copy. The last auction record was the Doheny copy which sold in 2001 for $9600 [64] leaves. Gothic type; rubricated throughout with initials supplied in red. Some worming which slightly affects some letters towards the end; minor foxing in the blank margins of a few leaves; otherwise a fresh, wide margined copy. § Hain-C. 6719 (2) & 8568 (59-64); GW 2949; BMC I, 188; Voulliéme, Köln 187; Goff H-238. [Salomon et Marcolphus] Collatio[n]es quas dicuntur fecisse mutuo Rex Salomon sapientissimus et Marcolphus facie deformis et turpissimus tamen ut fertur eloquentissimus feliciter, [Leipzig, Konrad Kachelofen, ca. 1487-89].
4° (mm 210x147); cc. (12), segnate a-b6. Silografia sotto al titolo. Pergamena moderna.

Ulrich Zell Cologne [ca. 1470] Modern blindstamped calf over wooden boards in a very attractive antique style of the period with central metal clasp (signed "GF. Köln") 4to (21:15 cm) . Only incunabular edition of these pseudo epigraphical writings attributed to St. Augustine that were printed by eminent German printer,Ulrich Zell, in Cologne around 1470. The other tracts included are "1-9, Epistola Augustini ad Cyrillum de magnificentiis Hieronymi; 10-51a, epistola Cyrilli ad Augustinum de miraculis Hieronymi; 51a-58, epistola Hieronymi ad Susannam lapsam; 59-64, epistola Hieronymi ad Heliodorum" (BMC). AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (Pseudo-).
De vita christiana.
      c. 1470-75, Mainz, Peter Schoeffer - With 2 three-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, Schoeffer's device in red at bottom of last leaf. Gothic type (type 3:91 G). 28 lines. 17 unn. leaves (of 18, lacking last blank). Small 4to (195 x 125 mm). 19th-century red morocco, gilt coat of arms of Gitton du Plessis (Olivier 510), gilt lettering on spine, gilt inner dentelles, edges gilt (by Duplanil; slight rubbing, minor repair to head of spine). From the collections of J.A.M. Gitton du Plessis (binding), and of John Pierpont Morgan (JPM booklabel; sold as duplicate at Sotheby's, 8 June 1971). (Mainz, Peter Schoeffer, c. 1470-75). A fine testimony to early printing in its second Schoeffer edition. Set in the Durandus type in its post-1466/67 state, which is the first small text type ever cut. This type was originaly made for the 1459 Durandus, which is the third dated book printed. The type is also closely related to Schoeffer's edition of Gerson, De custodia linguae (Mainz, not after September 1470). After Gutenberg had produced his famous 42-line Bible in 1455, he fell out with his associate Johann Fust. The latter teamed up with Peter Schoeffer, a calligrapher, later to become his son-in-law; together they continued to operate this first printing press. After a series of editions in large formats with extraordinary typography in colors (e.g. the 1457 Psalter), Fust and Schoeffer turned to producing books in smaller formats like the Pseudo-Augustinus, first printed between 1465-1466. After Fust's death in 1466, Peter Schoeffer flourished for about another thirty years, running his printing office as one of the most successful presses of Mainz. The tract "De vita christiana" is a Pelagian work of the fourth or early fifth century. It has been attributed to the British or Scottish monk Pelagius himself, or to his pupil Fastidius (see Dekkers, Clavis patrum latinorum, no. 740; Migne, Patrologia latina, 40: 1031 sqq; Hillard 236). - Some old underlinings and marginalia in faint brown ink, lower part of last leaf replaced with the Fust/Schoeffer device partly added in hand-painted facsimile. - Hain 2093*; GW 3039; BMC I, 37 (IA 270); Goff A-1356; BNCI A-774; Proctor 135; Pell-Pol 1580; Pol 428; Voulliéme (Berlin) 1547; BSB-Ink P 123 (also lacking last blank); Bibl. Arguably one of the most imposing volumes in the history of English law, Fitzherbert abridged over 14, 000 cases under 260 titles in alphabetical order. It was the first serious attempt to set the law down in systematic shape, and served as a model to such writers as Brooke and Rolle. According to Boersma, Fitzherbert accomplished "nothing less that to abridge all notes of significant cases at common law. " Graham and Heckel refer to this work as the "book that 'made' the Common Law. : Law Library Journal 51 [1957]: 100-101.

MARTIN SCHONGAUER COLMAR 1450 CIRCA - BREISACH 1491
MADONNA CON BAMBINO E PAPPAGALLO 1470
Bulino circa 1470/75, monogrammata in lastra in basso. Engraving, 1470/75 circa, signed at lower edge. Example in the second state, with a pear added on Christ's right hand. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper with small ox head with St. Anthony cross watermark (typical of the best examples of this work), trimmed to marginal line, in excellent condition. Schongauer's composition faithfully mirrors the classical model that many artists interpreted, i.e. the education of Baby Jesus. The Virgin is depicted with an open book, while Christ's attention is caught by something else, a fruit or a bird. Normally, these distracting elements are not depicted together, as it can be seen in the first state of this work, whose sole known example is kept in the British Museum. The second state is therefore contemporary to the first and shows the changes made by the artist; beside the pear, he also changed the pillow on lower part and the hair of the Virgin. There are just thirty recorded examples of this work, and the best have been printed on paper with this watermark. Excellent example of a rare work. Lehrs pp. 188/192, 37; Bartsch 29; TIB 037 II/II. Illuminated Medieval Manuscript, Book of Hours Leaf. ca.1470
1470 Illuminated Medieval Manuscript, Book of Hours Leaf.
France 1470 - Illuminated Medieval Manuscript, Book of Hours Leaf. ca.1470 Book of Hours, Use of Rome, France (Anjou), In Latin, On Vellum, ca. 1470. 11 rows of script in a gothic liturgical hand upon lines ruled in purple ink; capitals touched in yellow and/or rubrics; and burnished gold verse initials with black penwork and/or letters rubricated in blue with contrasting red penwork (approx. 123 x 82 mm.) Before moveable type, books were tediously but carefully written by hand, and such manuscripts were a product of the joint labors of more than scribes, but included vellum makers, painters, illuminators, and booksellers. From the evenly scrape calves’, goats’, or sheep skins in preparing the vellum for the gold, inks, and paint; to the leather work and binding of the pages; workshops existed to coordinate the complex work required to create such a valuable prize as a Book of Hours. A devotional codex could easily cost as much as a house (and at auction, more elaborate ones still do), but was worth the cost to the status and pious minded royalty and developing Medieval middle class. Manuscripts still comprised most books well into the last half of the 15th century, despite Gutenberg’s Bible in the 1450’s. Printed text and pictures would soon come to dominate mass media for the next five hundred years, but a remnant of those days before printing became widespread is presented here, a single leaf from a Book of Hours: Accompanied with certificate of Authenticity from the Christian Heritage Museum.       Lambda 2008 - Four Volumes (From the description) The selection of these four authors: Rabbeinu Chananel, Rash'bam, R'dak, and Seforno, was prompted by the desire to acquaint the reader with exegetes who concentrate in the main on the peshat, the meaning of the text as it strikes the reader at the first cursory perusal of the text. Rabbeinu Chananel (born approximately 975) was the head of the Yeshiva in Kairuan, which became internationally recognized as a great center of learning.Rabbi Sh'muel ben Meir (Rash'bam) (approximately 1085 - 1174) was one of the gransons of Rashi, and is well known for his concentration on the literal meaning of the text.Rabbi David Kimchi (R'dak) (1160 - 1235) was born in Narbonne, wrote commentary on the Tanach, and is well known for his major work dealing with grammar of the Holy Tongue, Sefer Hashorashim.Rabbi Ovadiah Seforno (born 1470) served as the Rabbi of Rome for over 30 years and was a physician. Danzi, by Massimo
La Biblioteca del Cardinal Pietro Bembo
DROZ. 472p (Droz 2005). 9782600009249. Petrarca (Petrarch), Francesco. Rime, In Italian Verse, M...
Italy (perhaps Florence): c1470 [third quarter of the fifteenth century] 282mm. by 210mm. Early foliation (ignored here) xi-xv, xxi, xvi-xvii, xix-xx, misbound, leaves should be in the order fols.1-5, 7-8, one lacking, 9-10 and 6, lacking all leaves after that. 10 leaves. Double column, c.40-44 lines, written-space c.240mm. by 175mm., written in dark brown ink in a flamboyant cursive hand, opening initials of each verse set apart into left-hand margins, some minor wear and stains in corners, generally sound, old marbled paper boards. The manuscript has the bookplate of Joseph Tasker, Middleton Hall, Essex. [Tasker had an extensive collection of English literature according to Hazlett’s ‘Roll Of Honour’. His books were sold at auction 7 March & 13 Nov. 1862 (SLS & JW) with a remainder on 22 Dec. 1868 (SW & H.) In the 1840's he published several translations of works on Spanish Treasury Bonds signing himself as “Joseph Tasker, Chairman of the Holders of Spanish Treasury Bonds.”] On the cover is a paper label identifying it as 'No. 32." The watermark is a cardinal’s hat, type of Briquet 3370 (Florence 1465-67, variants in Venice 1469, etc.). These are the Rime sparsi of Francesco Petrarca, or Petrarch (1304-1374), written in honour of Laura, the mysterious and elusive paragon whom he claimed to have first glimpsed in the church of St.Clare in Avignon in 1327. Petrarch recorded that she died in 1348. Even the poet’s own friends questioned whether Laura was a real woman or a fictional symbol of perfection. The love poems were begun in the early 1330s and were mostly completed by the mid-1350s. A final version was begun in 1366 and survives in a manuscript which is at least partly autograph (Vatican, cod. Vat.Lat. 3195). These are lyric poems of intense love, frustration, beauty and tragedy, filled with allegory, wit, self-accusation, remorse and despair. They are among the most important and moving poems of the early Renaissance. The present copy is unusual in being written in a cursive or even notarial hand. It is apparently unrecorded, and is not listed in N. Mann, Petrarch Manuscripts in the British Isles (Censimento dei codici petrarcheschi, VI), 1975. The manuscript opens on fol.1r with Rima 1, “Voi ch’ascoltate in rime sparse ilsono …”, continuing with nos.2, 3 (on the poet’s first meeting with Laura on Good Friday), 4 (on Laura’s birth), 5 (playing with the syllables of her name Lau-re-ta), 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (addressed to Stefano Colonna the elder), 11, 12, 13, and so on, to the end of Rima 33 (fol.5v); the text then continues without a break on fol.7r, with Rima 34 (inviting Apollo to come to see the marvel of his lady shading herself from the sun), continuing with nos.35 (in which the cares of love exile him into the forests and mountains), 36, 37 (the heading at the top of fol.7v occurs in mid-sentence and bears no relation to the text of the poem), 38, 39, 40, and so on, to the end of Rima 48 (fol.8v); one leaf of text (166 lines) is lacking; it picks up again on fol.9r in Rima 53, line 53, and continues with nos.54, 55, 56, and so on, to Rima 70, line 13 (fol.10v), breaking off and picking up again without a break on fol.6r with Rima 70, line 14, continuing with nos.71 (on the brevity of life) and 72, to line 18 (fol.6v), all ending, “… del suo lavoro in terra”; it lacks all text after that. Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374) Italian scholar and poet, often considered the "first humanist".He was widely traveled and became the first great Alpinist. His famous series of poems to Laura, the Canzoniere, are still considered some of the greatest poems ever written. "Not only did this culture hero gain an ardent welcome or these ideas and practices (antiquarianism, study of elegant Latin, study of Greek, etc.), but he shaped them into a single movement that came to dominate the culture of the age: to have established the vogue and ideology of classical antiquity and humanistic studies was Petrarch's most significant achievement. In this sense he was 'the founder of the Renaissance." Wedeck & Schweitzer, Dictionary of the Renaissance.

The Printed Homer: a 3, 000 Year Publishing and Translation History of the Iliad and the Odyssey
McFarland & Company. New PLEASE NOTE that we do not offer expedited shipping. Orders placed with the priority shipping option will automatically be canceled.

Wachsmann,S.
Aegeans in the Theban Tombs
Peeters - 9789068310665 The wall paintings of several Theban tombs represent foreigners who present gifts that are sometimes typically Cretan or Aegean. Other foreigners, although labeled «Princes of Keftiu» (Crete), are represented as Asiatics. The aim of the present volume is to analyze these wall paintings in order to distinguish the Aegeans and their gifts. The author manages to establish their characteristics in nine Theban tombs, divides chronologically in two groups, and shows that the related figures reflect actual Aegeo-Egyptian relations in the time of the XVIIIth dynasty, down to c. 1470/1450 BC. This result is obtained by a careful comparison of represented gifts with undoubtedly Minoan objects and documents from the Aegean, especially Crete.

THOMAS D'AQUIN (Saint)
Quodlibeta duodecim disputata circa annum d(omi)ni M.CC.LXX. (EDITION INCUNABLE, UNE DES PREMIERS IMPRESSIONS ROMAINES)
      - S.l.n.d. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Book of Hours, use of Rome.
Illuminated Latin manuscript on vellum.
Northern Italy (Torino diocese), 1470/1480. - 120 ff. 140 x 115 mm, lacking one single leaf in quire xii (end of "Oratio S. Anselmi" before Office of the Dead, which was removed as a whole in the 18th century); otherwise complete. Collation: i8, ii4, iii-xii8, xiii3 (instead of 4), xiv-xvi8, xvii3 (instead of 6: three final blanks omitted). Vertical catchwords, 16 lines, written space 110 x 850 mm. Written in brown ink in a rounded gothic liturgical hand, rubrics in red, 13 large historiated initials, initials 4-5 lines high in burnished gold on panelled grounds, one with a one-sided illuminated border of colored leaves and flowers with tiny gold bezants. 158 two-line illuminated initials for each psalm in burnished gold on panels divided into red, green, and blue with delicate tracery in white and yellow, one-line and two-line initials throughout alternately in blue and burnished gold. 18th-c. calf with cover fillets; remains of clasps. Book of Hours written for a layman close to the Third Order of St. Francis, as suggested by red highlighting of the feasts of St. Bernardino of Siena and of the Order's founder (Oct. 4) within the (non-liturgical) calendar. The emphasis on St. Francis and St. Bernardino in the litany (they are placed immediately after St. Benedict), as that on Clara of Assisi and Elizabeth of Thuringia, and also a prayer from the Office of St. Francis, appended shortly after the completion of the ms. on fol. 94v, support this attribution. - The calendar and litany commemorate three great popular preachers besides St. Francis, namely the Franciscan Bernardino of Siena, d. 1444 (5v, 105r), the Dominican Vincent Ferrer, d. 1419 (105r), and the Augustinian Hermit Nicholas of Tolentino, d. 1305 (9r), a fact that underlines the lay element of the manuscript. - The illumination of the text is remarkable: while the Office of the Virgin is usually illustrated by a childhood or passion cycle (the Annunciation classically forming the opening scene), the first historiated initial here contains a rather abstract devotional picture of Mary, serving as an obligatory bow to the Virgin's eschatological importance; the following hours, however, invoke a series of additional advocates for the reader's salvation. Especially noteworthy is the distinction awarded to St. Michael, who occupies the only five-line initial, while all the other figures are fitted within four-line characters. The illustrated litany extends beyond the Office of the Virgin to another text (59v), so that a total of nine saints (Mary, Michael, John the Evangelist, Catharine, Jerome, John the Baptist, Anthony, Francis, Elizabeth) are commemorated in illuminations. - Some leaves (including the first) rather rubbed; decorative initials within calendar trimmed during rebinding; a few smudges and small stains, but mostly sound.
