Venetiis: JOANNEM VARISCUM ET SOCIOS. [LINGUA LATINA-RARO] (cm. 15) buona tutta pergamena originale con tracce di lacci.-- cc. 164, cc. 15 nn. + 1c. bianca. Marca tipografica al frontis con sirena coronata che sorregge le due code con le mani. L' autore, Castellesi adriano (1458?-1520) fu cardinale di Corneto, ma in fine si mescolò a una congiura contro il Papa, fuggì da Roma e di lui non si seppe più nulla. Valente latinista scrisse "DE VERA PHILOSOPHIA" e un "DE VENATIONE" coi tipi di Aldo nel 1534; ma il "DE SERMONE LATINO" fù l' opera che le dette più fama e fù più volte ristampata. Castellesi "è da lodarsi come uno dei primi scrittori che cercassero di ricondurre il buono stile di latinità" (Dizionario biografico universale). Manca la sguardia posteriore ma ottimo esemplare nitido e genuino di questa raraedizione sconosciuta a GRAESSE, BRUNET, MORANTI "CINQUECENTINE DI URBINO", BIBL. PANIZZI, BM. STC. ED AD ADAMS E AD ALTRA BIBLIOGRAFIA CONSULTATA. . condizioni quasi ottime. Rilegato. 1578.

(4), 160, (4) pp. Rare edition of a very popular songbook. The frontispiece by J. Lamsvelt shows a woman reading in "Thirsis Minnewit", which was perhaps the most popular songbook of the 18th century. Johan van Dans used the title "Thirsis Minnewit" for his popular songbooks, but in the course of the 18th century the title "Thirsis Minnewit" appeared anonymously. Consisting of three or four parts, the present title" De Vrolyke Zang-godin" then constituted part three of the "Thirsis Minnewit", a rather complicated situation which is not yet fully studied. One of the songs present here is by Fockenbrock, and next to the merry songs and love songs the book also contains two "table-games" set to well-known melodies. Fine copy of the rare first edition. Basel: Henrich Petri, [Colophon: 1571]. Folio (12 3/8 x 8 inches). Woodcut printer's device on title-page, 18 woodcut maps from Muenster's "Cosmographia", woodcut initials (contemporary ownership inscription excised from title-page, one or two repaired marginal tears occasionally crossing the text). Contemporary limp vellum decorated in blind, yapp fore-edges (dust-soiled). Provenance: Some contemporary marginal annotations; ownership inscription and notes of Dr. David Laird, M.D. on the front paste-down. Pope Pius II (1458-1464) travelled widely and was a prolific writer; two incomplete editions of his work were published by Henrich Petri in 1551 and this edition in 1571 which includes accounts of his many travels and in particular his secret mission to Scotland with Cardinal Albergati "The voyage was very tempestuous and Piccolomini vowed to walk, if spared, barefoot from the port of arrival to the nearest shrine of Our Lady. He landed at Dunbar and, from the pilgrimage of ten miles through ice and snow to the sanctuary of Whitekirk, he contracted the gout from which he suffered for the rest of his life" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Two of his most important works were either entirely or partly written during his period as Pope: "his geographical and ethnographical description of Asia and Europe; and his "Memoirs", which are the only autobiography left us by a pope. They are entitled "Pii II Commentarii rerum memorabilium, quae temporibus suis contigerunt". Earlier in his life he had written, besides "Eurialus and Lucretia" and the recently discovered comedy "Chrysis", the followinghistorical works: "Libellus dialogorum de generalis concilii auctoritate et gestis Basileensium"; "Commentarius de rebus Basileae gestis"; "Historia rerum Frederici III imperatoris"; "Historia Bohemica" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Leg. coeva in mezza pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli su doppio tassello, filetti e fregi floreali in oro. Piatti leggermente lisi, sottili fenditure alle cerniere con i piatti ancora solidi, lievi e naturali fioriture, peraltro esemplare ben conservato. Monumentale raccolta di fonti normative che si fonda sull'opera "Tripartitum" del giurista magiaro Istvan Werboczy (1458-1541) risalente al 1514, a cui nei secoli furono aggiunti statuti, decreti (raccolti in quest'edizione fino al 1812) e consuetudini che compongono il Corpus juris Hungarici vigente per circa 350 anni nel regno d'Ungheria. [Lyon: Benedictum Bonnyn], 1534. CXXXVII, [X] ff. Main text printed in parallel columns. Octavo (7" x 5"). Contemporary paneled calf with elaborate blind-tooling, raised bands and blind fillets to spine, faint early hand-lettered title to fore-edge, faint somewhat later location number to spine, ties lacking. Light rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and lightly worn, large worm-holes to rear board edges at lower corner and center of foot and head, additional worming to pastedowns, minor worming to margins of preliminaries and endleaves, front hinge cracked but secure, lower corner of title page repaired with no loss to text. Title page with large woodcut Bonnyn device printed within woodcut architectural border, woodcut decorated initials. Early annotations in fine hand to endleaves and margins of some leaves (along with underlining). Light toning, interior otherwise fresh. $3,500. * Remembered today as the moral and satirical poet of Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools), Brant was also a noted legal scholar and humanist. He studied at Basel, where he completed a doctor of laws degree. After serving on Basel's law faculty he moved to Strasbourg, his birthplace, where he became city clerk and enjoyed a position of great prominence. Brant was later appointed imperial councilor by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, who elevated him to the nobility. Expositio Titulorum is a renowned textbook devoted to complex passages in Roman and canon law. First published in 1490 while Brant was in Strasbourg, it summarizes his thoughts concerning Roman and Canon law and reflects his conservative and somewhat cynical worldview. OCLC locates no copies of this edition in North America, 9 copies of other editions. Not in Baudrier or Adams.

Il richiamo a S. Francesco (4 ottobre), S. Agostino (28 agosto) e S. Domenico (5 agosto) fanno invece pensare ad un uso monastico del volume. Numerose aggiunte sono poi relative a vescovi e santi bresciani. Una datazione precisa del manoscritto è possibile grazie ad una postilla lasciata dallo scriba al f. 181r “Explicit officium feriale: Deo gracias: Amen: die 19 augusti 1458”. Un ulteriore indizio è al f. 392, alla fine dell’Officio della Vergine, in cui compaiono le iniziali “D.S.A.”Importante documento di preghiera privata, probabilmente di un monaco mantovano, francescano o agostiniano, alla metà del XV secolo. Ottimo esemplare, finemente vergato e miniato.

Dante Die Göttliche Komödie Das Lieblingsbuch des Königs von Neapel Die göttliche Komödie- ein Werk der Weltliteratur Dante Alighieri, 1265 in Florenz geboren, gilt als der größte Dichter des europäischen Mittelalters. Mitten im Bürgerkrieg zwischen Guelfen und Ghibellinen begann Dante 1307 in der Verbannung die Niederschrift seines Lebenswerks, La Divina Commedia, Die Göttliche Komödie. Es ist das erste große Werk in italienischer Sprache, die von Dante erst aus dem toskanischen Dialekt zur Literatursprache entwickelt werden mußte. Die Göttliche Komödie besteht aus drei Teilen: Inferno (Hölle), Purgatorio (Fegefeuer) und Paradiso (Paradies). Der Dichter erzählt in der Ich-Form seine Reise durch die drei Reiche der Toten. Durch die Hölle wird er von dem römischen Dichter Vergil geleitet, durch das Fegefeuer ins Paradies von seiner idealisierten Jugendliebe Beatrice. Das monumentale Epos aus 14233 Versen beendete Dante kurz vor seinem Tod, 1321 starb er in Ravenna. Die letzten 20 Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte er auf steter Wanderschaft: Aus seiner geliebten Heimatstadt verbannt und in Abwesenheit zweimal zum Tod verurteilt, hatte er Florenz niemals wieder betreten. Geblieben ist eines der größten Werke der Weltliteratur. Dank seiner kraftvollen und bilderreichen Sprache hat es nicht nur die besten Buchmaler, sondern auch die bildenden Künstler aller Epochen inspiriert: Botticelli, Rodin, Dore und Dali - um nur die berühmtesten zu nennen. Alfons I., König von Neapel Alfons V. von Aragon, genannt der Große (1396-1458), erhielt 1442 den Titel König von Neapel, nach einem fast vierjährigen Krieg gegen Rene von Anjou. Mit ihm begann die Herrschaft Aragons über die Stadt. Als Alfons I. ging der Aragoner in die Geschichte Neapels ein und erbte ein damals stark verkleinertes Reich, das finanziell am Ende war. Trotz der schlechten Ausgangslage setzte binnen kurzer Zeit der Aufschwung ein, und die Stadt erstrahlte in neuem Glanz. Zahlreiche Neubauten wie der Triumphbogen des Castel Nuovo entstanden. Alfons war ein typischer Mäzen des italienischen Humanismus und gab der Literatur wichtige Impulse. In seine Zeit fällt auch die Gründung der Accademia Napoletana. Sie war ein bedeutendes Zentrum des Humanismus, der Glanz und der Stolz des literarischen Neapel, berühmt für die Philologie, Übersetzungen der griechischen Klassik und die Interpretation philosophischer Texte. Der Codex : 115 Miniaturen auf 198 Folios Die Handschrift Yates Thompson MS 36 ist nach ihrem Stifter benannt, der sie der British Library in London vermachte, wo sie noch heute bewahrt wird. Bilder und Texte entstanden vermutlich kurz vor der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts in Siena, das damals aufgrund seiner Rivalität zu Florenz mit dem aragonesischen Hof in Neapel in Verbindung stand. Unbekannt ist jedoch, ob Alfons die Handschrift selbst in Auftrag gab, oder ob sie auf Geheiß eines Sieneser Auftraggebers für Alfons angefertigt wurde. Vermutlich erging der Auftrag für die Handschrift über Guiniforte Bargigi, der 1432 im Dienste des neapolitanischen Hofes stand und in der Folge selbst einen Kommentar zur Göttlichen Komödie verfaßte. Die Handschrift ist besonders wertvoll, weil sie alle drei Teile des Danteschen Hauptwerks in 115 Bildern auf 198 Folios verewigt. Die Miniaturen zum Paradiso hat John Pope-Hennessy dem Sieneser Künstler Giovanni di Paolo (1403-1482) zugeschrieben - eine Zuweisung, die heute unumstritten ist. Weniger sicher ist man sich bei der Einordnungder anderen Bilder, sowohl jener zum Inferno als auch jener zum Purgatorio. Anders als die traditionelle Lehrmeinung, welche die Bilder zum Purgatorio einem Maler der Florentiner Schule zuschreibt, führt Pope-Hennessy den Sieneser Lorenzo Vecchietta ins Treffen, während Jonathan Alexander und Millard Meiss für Priamo della Quercia plädieren, den Bruder des bekannteren Jacopo della Quercia. Gold in allen Miniaturen und Initialen Die Szenen sind fast alle in großzügigen Bildstreifen am Fuß der Seite untergebracht, von rechteckigem Format und nehmen meist die gesamte Breite des Blattes ein. Jeder einzelne Streifen ist von einem reich geschmückten Rahmen umgeben, dessen Motive mit Gold verfeinert wurden, um dem Bildinhalt besonderen Glanz zu verleihen. An enlightened patron and sensitive humanist himself, in an effort to affirm the predominance of his kingdom over the other the Italian states, the sovereign transformed Naples into a lively artistic and cultural center. A sophisticated bibliophile, he looked upon manuscripts as precious treasures and, having accumulated an extensive library in Spain, he wanted to provide it in Naples with Italian, Latin and Greek texts, obtaining precious miniature codices through the good offices of the scholarly Guiniforte Barzizza. The sumptuous collection of miniatures in the Divine Comedy is the work of two different artists, even if the assignment to decorate the three canticles was probably given to a single artist, identified as the Siennese, Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta. It was this first illuminator who decorated all the capital letters and the scenes of Hell and Purgatory, which were executed between 1442 and 1450. The decoration of Paradise, however, must be attributed to another Siennese, Giovanni di Paolo, an artist immersed in a dream-like, spiritual dimension which he translated in his miniatures into unreal, fairy-tale atmospheres sharing three common characteristics: the structure of the universe, represented by the azure brightness of the sky and the celestial spheres, usually blazing with gold; the all-consuming loveliness of the countryside, inspired by the beauty of the Tuscan landscape to the south of Sienna and frequently clearly recognizable; and the unifying presence in the majority of the miniatures of the coupled figures of Dante and Beatrice. - (cm 20,5) Attraente mz. pergamena antica ben restaurata, piatti con messale rosso e nero del ‘500, sguardie antiche; cc. 4 nn., cc. 245 (di 252). Caratteri romani, 2 colonne, capilettera figurati molto belli, anche a fondo nero e sotto il titolo bella xilografia (cm 12x11). Edizione molto rara di queste famose prediche raccolte dalla viva voce del Savonarola da Lorenzo Viali. Manca a Choix, Moreni, Gamba, Adams, BM. STC. e Moranti. La celebre xilografia col carnefice che attizza il rogo sul quale è il frate, in mezzo alle fiamme, è di tradizione puramente veneziana, contrariamente alle altre illustrazioni venete che subiscono l’influenza delle edizioni fiorentine. Purtroppo manca l’ultima carta (252) e, per motivi di censura, mancano 6 carte dalla 60 alla 65 comprese, la 66, presente, è scarabocchiata. Elève de Pontanus, il connut rapidement une grande renommée littéraire, et son recueil le plus connu, l'Arcadia, lui valut l'admiration des Cours d'Italie. Aucun exemplaire de cette petite édition au CCF. Pas d'exemplaire cité non plus dans le Catalogue of books printed in Italy du British Museum (éd. de 1958).

Der Codex : 115 Miniaturen auf 198 Folios Die Handschrift Yates Thompson MS 36 ist nach ihrem Stifter benannt, der sie der British Library in London vermachte, wo sie noch heute bewahrt wird. Bilder und Texte entstanden vermutlich kurz vor der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts in Siena, das damals aufgrund seiner Rivalität zu Florenz mit dem aragonesischen Hof in Neapel in Verbindung stand. Unbekannt ist jedoch, ob Alfons die Handschrift selbst in Auftrag gab, oder ob sie auf Geheiß eines Sieneser Auftraggebers für Alfons angefertigt wurde. Vermutlich erging der Auftrag für die Handschrift über Guiniforte Bargigi, der 1432 im Dienste des neapolitanischen Hofes stand und in der Folge selbst einen Kommentar zur Göttlichen Komödie verfaßte. Weniger sicher ist man sich bei der Einordnungder anderen Bilder, sowohl jener zum Inferno als auch jener zum Purgatorio. Anders als die traditionelle Lehrmeinung, welche die Bilder zum Purgatorio einem Maler der Florentiner Schule zuschreibt, führt Pope-Hennessy den Sieneser Lorenzo Vecchietta ins Treffen, während Jonathan Alexander und Millard Meiss für Priamo della Quercia plädieren, den Bruder des bekannteren Jacopo della Quercia. An enlightened patron and sensitive humanist himself, in an effort to affirm the predominance of his kingdom over the other the Italian states, the sovereign transformed Naples into a lively artistic and cultural center. A sophisticated bibliophile, he looked upon manuscripts as precious treasures and, having accumulated an extensive library in Spain, he wanted to provide it in Naples with Italian, Latin and Greek texts, obtaining precious miniature codices through the good offices of the scholarly Guiniforte Barzizza. The sumptuous collection of miniatures in the Divine Comedy is the work of two different artists, even if the assignment to decorate the three canticles was probably given to a single artist, identified as the Siennese, Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta. It was this first illuminator who decorated all the capital letters and the scenes of Hell and Purgatory, which were executed between 1442 and 1450. The decoration of Paradise, however, must be attributed to another Siennese, Giovanni di Paolo, an artist immersed in a dream-like, spiritual dimension which he translated in his miniatures into unreal, fairy-tale atmospheres sharing three common characteristics: the structure of the universe, represented by the azure brightness of the sky and the celestial spheres, usually blazing with gold; the all-consuming loveliness of the countryside, inspired by the beauty of the Tuscan landscape to the south of Sienna and frequently clearly recognizable; and the unifying presence in the majority of the miniatures of the coupled figures of Dante and Beatrice. Legatura di riutilizzo da foglio coevo di Salterio con notazione musicale su tetragramma in inchiostro rosso e iniziali in blu e rosso a filigrana contrastante; conservato entro astuccio in marocchino granata, titolo oro al dorso. Centinaia di iniziali filigranate in rosso e blu di modulo variabile segnano l’accesso alle varie sezioni del testo. Il volume, decisamente portatile per le dimensioni, ma di notevole spessore, comprende: un Calendario (ff. 1-6); Temporale, secundum consuetudinem Romane curie (ff. 7-181); Inni di mano diversa (ff. 181v-183v); ff. 184r-186r bianchi; f. 186v Inni; Salterio feriale (ff. 187r-256v); Santorale da s. Saturnino (29 novembre) a santa Caterina (25 novembre), (ff. 257-266); Sequenza di S. Tommaso Becket (ff. 267-361); Ordo ad catechuminum (ff. 362-365v); Tempo del Commune (ff. 367-385v; f. 386v preghiera aggiunta; Officio della Vergine (ff. 387-391v); Officio dei Defunti (ff. 392-395); Salmi Penitenziali e Litanie, (ff. 395-397v); Officio della Trasfigurazione (ff. 397v-401); benedizioni della mensa per i frati nel loro refettorio, (f. 401); Officio di S. Maddalena (ff. 402v-405); Preghiera Aggiunta di S. Pietro (f. 406); Preghiere aggiunte, varie festività dalla Natività a Tutti i Santi (ff. 407-416).La presenza di alcuni santi evidenziati nelle festività del calendario fanno ipotizzare una provenienza del manoscritto da Mantova: si nominano infatti Anselmo (18 marzo), Longino (2 dicembre) e Santa Barbara. Il richiamo a S. Francesco (4 ottobre), S. Agostino (28 agosto) e S. Domenico (5 agosto) fanno invece pensare ad un uso monastico del volume. Numerose aggiunte sono poi relative a vescovi e santi bresciani. Una datazione precisa del manoscritto è possibile grazie ad una postilla lasciata dallo scriba al f. 181r “Explicit officium feriale: Deo gracias: Amen: die 19 augusti 1458”. Un ulteriore indizio è al f. 392, alla fine dell’Officio della Vergine, in cui compaiono le iniziali “D.S.A.”Importante documento di preghiera privata, probabilmente di un monaco mantovano, francescano o agostiniano, alla metà del XV secolo. Ottimo esemplare, finemente vergato e miniato. "
