Grandiosa e celebre suite di finissime tavole di grande bellezza e suggestione, raffiguranti le più importanti tele conservate nella Galleria. Monumentale opera dedicata a Leopoldo II di Toscana (la prima tavola è un suo grande ritratto), le armi della casata ornano i 4 frontespizi. Le tavole sono splendide e finissime incisioni in rame dei più famosi maestri dell'epoca, citati dal Benezit anche per la realizzazione di quest'edizione. Straordinaria opera assai rara a trovarsi completa: la bellezza delle singole tavole ne ha spesso determinato lo scompletamento. Edizione originale, cfr. Brunet, II/1456. Nitida e fresca impressione su carta forte, ampi margini. Ogni tavola, protetta da velina, è corredata da testo critico-artistico di noti studiosi e letterati contemporanei (2-4 pp). Rilegata in 4 imponenti volumi, preziose legature dell'epoca in piena pelle, doppia cornice oro e ricco decoro a secco ad entrambi i piatti di ogni vol., nervetti e scomparti finemente decorati in oro, titoli oro, dentelle a secco all'interno dei piatti. A parte qualche trascurabile spell. i grandissimi volumi appaiono in condizioni ottimali, perfettamente integri, solidi e ottimamente conservati. In perfetto stato anche testo e tavole, freschissima la bella carta candida. Esemplare pressochè perfetto di questa rara opera, in eccezionali condizioni di freschezza. Iacopo Sannazzaro (1456 ca.-1530), celebre poeta napoletano, fu membro della Sodalitas del Pontano, che gl'impose il nome di Acius Syncerus; nel 1481 entrò a far parte della corte aragonese. Quest'edizione, arricchita dalla vita dell'A. composta da Paolo Giovio, contiene le seguenti opere: De partu Virginis libri tres, Piscatoria Eglogae quinque, Elegiarum libri tres, Epigramaton libri tres. - Due opere in un volume di cm. 22. Belle marche tip. ai frontespizi e ad un colophon. Leg. coeva in piena perg. molle con titoli ms. al dorso. Antiche note di possesso ms. al frontespizio, antichi timbretti al verso del primo frontespizio, di antica biblioteca ecclesiastica tedesca. Restauro con integrazione di perg. in buona parte del dorso (piatti perfetti) e laccetti in tessuto verde recentemente integrati. Modeste fioriture e qualche sporadica carta brunita. Esemplare ben conservato. Prima opera: Silvestro Mazzolini detto Prierias (1456 ca.-1523), teologo domenicano nativo di Prierio (Cn), fu vicario generale, inquisitore a Brescia, nonché professore di teologia a Roma. L'A. fu accanito contestatore delle tesi luterane nella celebre Summa Sylvrestrina e scrisse, sempre influenzato da rigide idee tomiste, quest'opera dedicandola monograficamente al tema della stregoneria. Frequenti i riferimenti all'arte magica, ai demoni ed infine a numerosi casi di esorcismi finalizzati alla salvezza di donne che invocavano consapevolmente il diavolo ripudiando i simboli della fede. Seconda edizione, che segue di oltre cinquant'anni l'originale impressa per i tipi di Antonio Blado. Cfr. Iccu; Adams M-962; Graesse V, 442. Seconda opera: Bartolomeo Spina, teologo domenicano, nacque a Pisa intorno al 1474 e morì a Roma nel 1546. Professore di teologia a Bologna, Spina fu brillante curatore dei commentari tomisti ad Aristotele, nonché di numerosi scritti teologici. Quest'opera, influenzata dall'esperienza d'inquisitore che egli fece a Modena, delinea un trattato sulle modalità d'inquisizione delle diverse tipologie di streghe. In appendice si riscontrano due trattati sulla preminenza della teologia sopra le altre scienze. Seconda edizione, che segue di oltre cinquant'anni l'originale in-folio impresso senza nome dello stampatore. Entrambe le edizioni rarissime, uscite dai torchi della Stamperia del Popolo Romano, fondata nel 1561 da Pio IV e diretta da Paolo Manuzio fino al 1570. Cfr. Iccu. (S117)

Some light foxing to title and latter index pages, otherwise in very good condition. Comprises the ascetical writings of Bishop and first Patriarch of Venice, Laurence Justinian (1381-1456). He was a descendant of the Giustiniani, a Venetian patrician family which numbered several saints among its members. Lawrence's pious mother sowed the seeds of a devout religious life in the boy's youth. In 1400 when he was about nineteen years old, he entered the monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine on the Island of Alga near Venice. In spite of his youth he excited admiration by his poverty, mortifications, and fervour in prayer. At that time the convent was changed into a congregation of secular canons living in community. After his ordination in 1406 Lawrence was chosen prior of the community, and shortly after that general of the congregation. He gave them their constitution, and was so zealous in spreading the same that he was looked upon as the founder. His reputation for saintliness as well as his zeal for souls attracted the notice of Eugene IV and on 12 May, 1433, he was raised to the Bishopric of Castello. The new prelate restored churches, established new parishes in Venice, aided the foundation of convents, and reformed the life of the canons. But above all he was noted for his Christian charity and his unbounded liberality. All the money he could raise he bestowed upon the poor, while he himself led a life of simplicity and poverty. He was greatly respected both in Italy and elsewhere by the dignitaries of both Church and State. He tried to foster the religious life by his sermons as well as by his writings. The Diocese of Castello belonged to the Patriarchate of Grado. On 8 October, 1451, Nicholas V united the See of Castello with the Patriarchate of Grado, and the see of the patriarch was transferred to Venice. Lawrence was named the first Patriarch of Venice, and exercised his office until his death around four years later. His beatification was ratified by Clement VII in 1524, and he was canonized in 1690 by Alexander VIII. Very Good

First and only edition of a political pamphlet in the form of a dialogue between Peter and Paul (an implicit allusion to the Saints). Peter asks Paul what he is doing reading all those "drucxkens" (clearly meaning pamphlets) and what is in them. Paul notes that they are all the remonstrances, discourses, conversations, dreams and riddles that have been published about the peace negotiations, a clear allusion to several pamphlets later issued collectively with the present one under the title Nederlandtsche Bye-Korf (following the Asher numbering, probably Bye-Korf pamphlets 5, 27, 30, and at least some in each of the groups 3, 34 & 35 and 25, 28 & 29). He notes that they also give examples from "living histories," and when Peter asks him to tell some, he notes that the King of Spain had made friends (so he pretended) with the kings of the West Indies (a term at this date still encompassing Brazil and other parts of continental America), only to then murder (their people) by the hundreds of thousands. He then goes on to note Spain's "tyranny" in the kingdoms of Mexico, Peru and Florida, and on the islands of Cuba, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico. Few of the pamphlets from this period make such specific reference to individual regions in North and South America and the West Indies.With its allusions to many other Bye-Korf pamphlets, this must be one of the latest pamphlets to have been issued with all three editions of the Bye-Korf, all of which came out between Easter (6 April) and 27 August 1608, the present pamphlet being banned with most of the others on the latter date. This and the fact that a single edition appears to have been issued with all three editions of the Bye-Korf, makes the present pamphlet an important key to the chronology of the others. While most Bye-Korf pamphlets went through three and some even more editions, only one edition of the present pamphlet is known. Kanton Unterwalden."Die erste Zusammenstellung der Landesgesetze von Nidwalden geschah im Jahre 1456. Darauf wurde das Landes-Artikelbuch in den Jahren 1623, 1731, 1782 und 1806 einer Revision unterworfen. Von allen diesen Revisionen wurde bisher keine dem Drucke übergeben. [..] Die Kantonsverfassung von 1850 schrieb [..] vor, dass das Gesetzbuch mit Beförderung auf Grundlage der Verfassung revidirt werden solle [..]. Nachdem solches [..] geschehen, [..] überwies der w. w. Rath die solcher Art veranstaltete Sammlung unterm 30. Mai 1857 der Gesetzes-Commission zur Prüfung. [..] Endlich wurde den 22. November 1857 von der Gesetzes-Commission in Sache dem h. Landrathe einlässlicher Bericht erstattet und es hat dann derselbe [..] beschlossen und erkennt: §. 1. Gegenwärtige Gesetzes-Sammlung [..] bildet den ersten Band der amtlichen Gesetzes-Sammlung für Nidwalden" (etc.). [..] "§. 7. Mit gegenwärtiger Erklärung der vorliegenden Gesetzes-Sammlung als offizielles Gesetzbuch hört das Landbuch von 1806 auf, als praktisch-geltende Gesetzes-Sammlung zu bestehen, soweit es nicht zur Beurtheilung früherer Rechtsverhältnisse als damals massgebend gewesene Norm in Betracht fällt. Also beschlossen zu Stanz [Stans], den 25. Wintermonat 1857." (Vorwort). -- Barth 24604. Huber erwähnt diese Version nicht in seinen Betrachtungen Nidwaldnerischer Gesetzbücher, was wohl darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass es sich hier gewissermassen um eine aktualisierte Form des Landbuches und nicht eigentlich um ein neues (allenfalls kodifiziertes) Werk handelt. Und da sich das Allgemeine Gesetzbuch offenbar an einer Wegscheide kurz vor den Kodifizierungen befand, nahm es Huber ev. aus diesem Grund auch nicht mehr als quasi authentisches Werk in die von ihm berücksichtigten Rechtsquellen auf. - "Nidwalden erhielt den ersten Teil eines Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuches, das Personenrecht, an der Landsgemeinde 1851 und durch Beschluss des Landrates vom 23. Oktober 1852, mit Inkraftsetzung auf den 1. Januar 1853. Darauf folgte, datiert vom 22. Februar 1859, der zweite Teil, das Erbrecht, in Kraft erklärt auf den 1. April 1859. Dagegen blieb das Sachenrecht (1868) im Entwurfe liegen. Das Gesetzbuch für den Kanton etc., 1867 herausgegeben, enthält die in Kraft bestehenden Gesetze und Verordnungen, mit Ausnahme des BG." A discussion of the pamphlet war concerning the peace negotiations with Spain, with special reference to Spanish atrocities in America, written in the form of a dialogue between Peter and Paul. First and only edition of a political pamphlet in the form of a dialogue between Peter and Paul (an implicit allusion to the Saints). Peter asks Paul what he is doing reading all those "drucxkens" (clearly meaning pamphlets) and what is in them. Paul notes that they are all the remonstrances, discourses, conversations, dreams and riddles that have been published about the peace negotiations, a clear allusion to several pamphlets later issued collectively with the present one under the title Nederlandtsche Bye-Korf (following the Asher numbering, probably Bye-Korf pamphlets 5, 27, 30, and at least some in each of the groups 3, 34 & 35 and 25, 28 & 29). He notes that they also give examples from "living histories," and when Peter asks him to tell some, he notes that the King of Spain had made friends (so he pretended) with the kings of the West Indies (a term at this date still encompassing Brazil and other parts of continental America), only to then murder (their people) by the hundreds of thousands. He then goes on to note Spain's "tyranny" in the kingdoms of Mexico, Peru and Florida, and on the islands of Cuba, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico. Few of the pamphlets from this period make such specific reference to individual regions in North and South America and the West Indies.With its allusions to many other Bye-Korf pamphlets, this must be one of the latest pamphlets to have been issued with all three editions of the Bye-Korf, all of which came out between Easter (6 April) and 27 August 1608, the present pamphlet being banned with most of the others on the latter date. This and the fact that a single edition appears to have been issued with all three editions of the Bye-Korf , makes the present pamphlet an important key to the chronology of the others. While most Bye-Korf pamphlets went through three and some even more editions, only one edition of the present pamphlet is known. It must therefore have been issued just before the first edition of the Bye-Korf .A very good copy of a political pamphlet interesting for its dialogue form, its reference to other pamphlets, and its references to several regions in the Americas.
