PLATON
|
| Platonici dialogi Sex
|
Apud. Ioan Tornaesium, Lugduni 1550 - In 8º, Portada, 85 pp. Encuadernación en pergamino de época. Buen ejemplar.

| Urban Carnival: Festive Culture in the Cities of the Eastern Baltic 1350-1550
|
Brepols Publishers. New This book studies festivals celebrated in Eastern Baltic towns (in the region called Livonia) from c. 1350 until 1550 and provides a comprehensive analysis of local customs set in the wider comparative context of festival culture of medieval Europe. Livonia was a common name used for the territories that covered present-day Estonia and Latvia. The birth of towns in Latvia was a result of the German-Danish conquest in the early thirteenth century and the German expansion eastwards. The towns in Livonia became essentially German: they were granted German city laws and the upper and middle classes consisted of German merchants and artisans. Four largest cities in Livonia— Riga, Reval, Dorpat and Pernau— became members of the Hanseatic League. Hanseatic merchants were the main mediators of festival customs in the Baltic Sea region. The merchants' festivals in medieval Baltic towns had much in common with those celebrated in central German areas, particularly in the Hanseatic towns of northern Germany. The major part of this book is devoted to the main annual festivals of the year: Christmas, Carnival, the popinjay shoot, and the May Count celebrations. ISBN10: 2503515215.

| Fiber-Optic Systems for Telecommunications
|
Wiley-Interscience. New A text that sheds much-needed light on one of telecommunication's brightest technologies Fiber optics has assumed a dominant place among the available technologies to slake the ever-growing worldwide thirst for bandwidth. As miles and miles of optical fiber cable is being buried underground and under the sea, the demand for those capable of designing and installing fiber-optic systems has also grown. This book gathers all the essential information needed by the network architects, engineers, and craftspeople who plan, install, and maintain fiber-optic systems. Requiring only a basic math and physics background, Fiber-Optic Systems for Telecommunications acts as both a tutorial and practical reference on both theory and practical applications. It discusses: * Loss-limited and dispersion-limited fiber links * Optical networking * Availability and survivability of fiber-optic networks * Dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM) * Light transmission impairments, including Brillioun scattering, Raman scattering, four-wave mixing, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and other non-linear effects * Hybrid fiber-coax CATV networks * Fiber-optic link budgets and tradeoffs The text stresses design methods for achieving advanced performance on fiber-optic systems inside cost-effective limits. At the same time, a good dose of practical application is provided to the reader. For example, there is an extensive section on the application of an OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer) for performance measurement and troubleshooting of optical systems. The book examines the maximum capacity of high-quality single-mode fiber. Here, the ITU has made somemajor contributions in this arena in their G.650 and G.950 recommendations. The author describes the ITU "grid" or wavelength assignment chart for the 1550 nm band. How close can these light carriers be placed before serious performance degradation occurs? He describes ultimate bit rate capacity in this band alone in the hundred...

| I SETTE LIBRI DELL'ARTE DELLA GUERRA, di NICOLO MACHIAVELLI cittadino et secretario fiorentino.
|
1550. 1550 - Small 4to, 210 x 145 mm, 8¼ x 5¾ inches, no publisher or printer, 1550. vignette portrait of the author on title page, at the rear are 7 double page plans of battles and encampments, Italian text, pages 185, (18), bound in modern quarter morocco over marbled sides, raised bands, gilt motif in compartments and gilt lettering to spine, marbled endpapers and silk marker. Corners very slightly worn, a few pages lightly age-browned, an occasional small pale damp stain to margins. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce work. The present work is Part IV of an edition of Machiavelli's writings entitled Tutte le Opere all the volumes of which are dated 1550 on the title page with no place or printer (see Adams M9). Although Adams accepts the date of 1550, others believe that this edition was printed circa 1620 and possibly in Geneva (see Copac, copy held by Warwick University with identical collation). The Art of War (1521), one of only a few works of Machiavelli to be published during his lifetime, is a dialogue set in the Orti Oricellari, a garden in Florence where humanists gathered to discuss philosophy and politics. The principal speaker is Fabrizio Colonna, a professional condottiere and Machiavellis authority on the art of war. The basis for the book is the creation of a modern army. Basileæ, per Ioan. Oporinum. [c. ?] 1550 - 8vo, pp. [viii], 456; a fine clean copy in a binding for Jacques-Auguste de Thou (see below) of olive morocco, spine gilt with monogram in each compartment, and gilt arms on both covers. (Slightly rubbed and faded, bottom corner of lower cover bumped.) Collation note dated 1835 by J.J. de Bure lainé. First and only edition of this collection of religious verse, edited - or at least with a preface by - a scholar with the exotic name of Orgetorix Sphinter. Sphinter seems to be a rather obscure figure, but seems to have been Swiss: in his prefatory address to the printer, Johann Oporinus, he speaks of selecting the poems primum de Helvetiis nostris, deinde de Germanis percontrari. The collection includes long sacred poems such as Jacopo Sannazaros De partu virginis (1526), Vidas Christiados (1535) and other shorter pieces. It seems to be quite scarce, with no copy at Harvard or Yale, or in the whole of the University of California system. Provenance: Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617), statesman and historian, but better known to many as one of the great French book collectors of the later 16th century. De Thou married more than once, and his bindings carry his arms either as a bachelor or impaled with either of his wives. This is one with the arms of his first wife, Marie de Barbançon, whom he married in 1587 and who died in 1601. BMC German 708. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Italian manuscript on paper. Imperfect, lacking first four leaves. 24 leaves (including four blanksat end). Disbound.Size: 235 x 171mm. 1550.] Compiled by a master of ceremonies, this is a rare and truly fascinating handbook, consisting of a series of elaborate prescriptions and rigid protocols for the major liturgical events celebrated by the Roman Curia between mid-winter and mid-summer. For each rite, the manual specifies its physical settings (which chapel, church and route, should there be a procession), the members of the clergy who can and must attend the various ceremonies, the functions and tasks they are supposed to perform at fixed points during the liturgical rites, their code of dressing (this is strictly regulated from type of vestment through to material and colour both for robes and accessories such as mitres, hats and caps) and matters of general etiquette (from ablutions, kissing of the Pope's feet, genuflexions, through to the decoration of altars and canopies.) Specifications of a similar kind are also provided both for ordinary and extraordinary rituals; these include the distribution of the candles to cardinals and dowries to poor girls on Candelmas (2 February) and on the Feast of Annunciation (25 March) respectively, royal and papal elections and coronations. The protocol also provides precise indications of what to do and how to behave both in the presence and in the absence of the Pope. This is a unique piece of historical and social anthropology, which offers a direct insight into the understanding of ceremonial, the magnificence of rites, the importance of symbolism and the relationship between power and pomp. Chancery script; dark brown ink; foliation in upper outer corner; vertical quire signature in the inner lower corner of f. 12v; use of nomina sacra; ff. [25-26] are uncut; some leaves are disbound and slightly water stained with some intermittent foxing; a little frayed at margins; slight loss of corners ff. 6-7

Sebastian Munster

| Typus Orbis Universalis

Munster's map of the World is one of the most recognized world maps of the 16th Century. This example is from the second woodblock, which includes the engraver David Kandel's initials. The map is richly embellished with sea monsters and 12 windheads. The example offered here is the second edition of the map, which appeared in Munster's Cosmographia beginning in 1550. The map is based upon a mix of information derived from Verrazano's explorations (1522-24) which mistook the Chesapeake for the Indian Ocean and Cartier's voyages (1534-35) up the St. Lawrence in search of the Northwest Passage. The west coast of America appears on the right side of the map. This is also the 1st map to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). Munster is non-committal as to the continuity of North and South America, an unbroken Central America being implied but not clearly shown. Though unnamed, Terra Australis is present but small, only serving to form the Magellan Strait. All of North America is called Terra Florida. Munster here adds further to the current confusion over Taprobana and Ceylon, depicting a Sumatra-shaped Tapbana on the west side of the Indian subcontinent, and Java in the approximately correct size and position of Sri Lanka. Girolamo Fracastoro

| DE SYMPATHIA & ANTIPATHIA RERUM. DE CONTAGIONE & CONTAGIOSIS MORBIS & EORUM CURATIONE, LIBRI TRES.
|
Lyons: Apud Gulielmum Gazeium 1550 - 12mo, 558,[2]pp. Contemporary limp vellum, somewhat wrinkled and worn, title in manuscript on spine. The SECOND EDITION of Fracastoro's classic work on the germ theory of infectious disease, issued four years after the Venice first edition. He distinguishes two forms of contagion: simple contact (e.g. scabies, phthysis, leprosy) and indirect contact through what he called fomites, or vehicles of infection such as clothes and bedding (plague, smallpox). His idea of the seeds of contagion (seminaris prima) as the underlying cause of infection, places him as one of the great precursors of the modern theory of infection. Fracastoro made many careful clinical observations and differentiated smallpox from measles, gave the earliest precise description of typhus, showed that tuberculosis was contagious, discussed rabies and syphilis, and dealt with the differential diagosis of contagious skin diseases. He also commented on the spread and control of epidemics. Please also see my other Fracastoro listings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Alessandrina in Rom).

Oporinum.
