Handgefertigter brauner Kalbledereinband der Zeit auf fünf Doppelbünden mit Rückenvergoldung aus kleinen Blütenstempeln innerhalb blindgeprägter Rahmen aus Linien, im zweiten Feld: "COLVM ELLA". Deckel mit Rahmen aus Doppellinie und ovalem maureskem Mittelstück in Goldprägung; auf dem Vorderdeckel darüber gelöschte Besitzinitialen. Naturfarbene handgestochene Kapitale; Goldschnitt. Einband eines Pariser Buchbinders bzw. eines solchen nach Genf geflohenen ähnlich dem von Schunke so benannten Goldast-Meister, dessen Ovalplatte mit Mauresken ebenfalls schraffiert ist. Vgl. "The set is an interesting example of this fine French printer's adaption of the famous Aldine classics that were proving so popular in Italy in the 16th century" (Hunt unter M.P. Cato). Catonis (234 - 149 v.d.Z.) De re rustica oder De agricultura, geschrieben um 154 v.d.Z., ist das früheste überlieferte Prosawerk der lateinischen Sprache. "Daß von dem Urrömer gerade dieses Buch erhalten ist, liegt am Thema: Landwirtschaft ist während der ganzen römischen Literaturgeschichte über Varro, Vergil, Columella, Gargilius Martialis bis hin zu Palladius, eines der am konstantesten bearbeiteten Fachgebiete geblieben - über die Jahrhunderte hin sichtbares Denkmal der Verwurzelung des römischen Volkes in seinem bäuerlichen Ursprung" (KLL 2362). Das Werk verwirrte durch seine Formlosigkeit, innerhalb eines Konstruktionsprinzips aus lockerer Aneinanderreihung sind Abschweifungen und Einschübe eingebracht; auf das Prooemium folgen Anweisungen für die Einrichtung des Gutes, Vorschriften für die im Jahreslauf anfallenden Arbeiten, dann jedoch Notizen, Rezepte, Ratschläge und dergleichen. Geschrieben in einer Sprache aus Knappheit, Feierlichkeit, eindrucksvoller Prägnanz. - Varro (116 - 27 v.d.Z.) gilt als der größte römische Gelehrte; seine Schrift Res rusticae ist uns vollständig überliefert. Im öffentlichen Leben erreichte er den Posten eines Praetor, im Bürgerkrieg kämfte er auf des Pompeius Seite. - Palladii Werk folgt dem Gang der Arbeiten innerhalb des Jahresablaufes; sein Stil ist nüchtern. Eigene Beobachtungen unterstützen die Verwendung älterer Autoren. Zum hier ausführlich behandelten Weinanbau cf. Simon: Bacchica I, p. 53 sq. Auch die wichtigen Kommentare von Vettori zu Cato und Varro sowie Beroaldos botanische Anmerkungen und Aldus Manutius' Bauernkalender sind enthalten. Einband an Gelenken, Ecken und Kanten restauriert, Vergoldung stellenweise minimal berieben. Die ersten drei Bll. mit je zwei kleinen Fleckchen; nur bisweilen leicht fleckig, sonst frisch. Columella, zweiter Teil und wegen des Umfanges meist separat gebunden, fehlt hier. Schönes, dekoratives Exemplar. - - - Contemporary Parisian calf over pasteboards gilt, edges gilt. Hinges repaired. Curtio de Navò al segno del Leone, 1543., Venezia, - In 16°(150x 100), 121 carte numerate. Marca silografica raffigurante il leone in lotta col grifone al frontespizio in silografia. Legatura amatoriale moderna in marocchino rosso, dentelle dorate interne e titolo in oro al dorso. Prima edizione, stampata nel 1543, di questa notissima opera che tramanda il mito di Ezzelino da Romano, tiranno dominatore della Marca Trevigiana. Questo mito nasce sia a livello colto che popolare nella secondà metà del Duecento. Riguardo all'opera ancora si discute se riconoscerla come opera originale dell'autore o come plagio delle "Cronache" di Rolandino da Padova. Buona copia con qualche piccolo alone. Note di possesso e piccolo timbrino di collezione privata al frontespizio. Lozzi cita un'altra edizione. Distinta in nove libri, ne quali s'ha la cognitione de le guerre della Marca Trivisana e di molte altre cose, da gli anni M.C. fin'à M.CCLXII.

Première édition de la traduction des six dialogues de Platon considérés comme apocryphes, mais qui ont été traditionellement inclus dans les différentes édition des "Opera". Il s'agit de : "De Justo", "De Virtute", "Demodocus vel de Consultando", "Sisyphus vel de deliberando", "Eryxias vel de Divitiis", "Definitiones" (ce dernier a été attrubué à Speusippe, philosophe d'Athènes, neveu et disciple de Platon, à qui il succéda dans la chaire de l'Académie). Le traducteur est le grammairien et humaniste italien Sebastiano Corrado (mort en 1556), successivement professeur à Venise, Reggio et Bologne. Il fonda à Reggio l'Académie des Belles-Letres "Degli Accessi". Bon exemplaire en cartonage ancien. Tintenflecke, stellenweise Feuchtigkeitsspuren. Justinian I. (ca 482 bis 565 nach Christus), römischer Weltherrscher illyrischer Herkunft. Er kämpfte gegen Perser und Slawen, gegen die Vandalen in Nordafrika, die Westgoten in Spanien und vor allem gegen die Ostgoten in Italien und suchte das Imperium in seinen alten Grenzen wiederherzustellen. Er widmete sich auch dem Ausbau einer geordneten Verwaltung. Die von ihm veranstaltete Sammlung des geltenden röm. Rechts in den Institutionen, dem Codex Iustinianus und in den Digesten, zeigen ihn als großen Gesetzgeber, dessen Werk noch heute in den Gesetzgebungen der europ. Völker weiterwirkt. Gregor Haloander (eigentl. Meltzer), deutscher Jurist und Altphilolog (geb. 1501 Zwickau, gest. 1531 Venedig), veranstaltete, unterstützt vom Nürnberger Rat, u. a. eine sechsbändige kritische Ausgabe des Corpus juris civilis. Bon exemplaire Cinquième et dernière partie de la série des Agronomes latins publiée par Robert Estienne. Chacune de ces parties est parue séparément, et les séries complètes sont rarissimes. Cette dernière partie contient un glossaire botanique de Merula et Beroalde d'après Caton, Varron et Collumelle. Halblederband mit Rückentitel.. Nr. 397 von 1000 nummerierten Exemplaren dieses aufwendigen Faksimiledrucks der ersten deutschen Ausgabe von dem berühmtesten aller Kräuterbücher. - Mit seinem 1543 erschienenen "New Kreüterbuch" machte Leonhard Fuchs, fußend auf der durch die Humanisten wiederentdeckten antiken Medizin eines Hippocrates, Dioskurides und Galen, ein breites Publikum mit dem "Garten der Gesundheit", den bis dahin weitgehend verborgenen Heilkräften der Natur bekannt. Zusammen mit einigen Kollegen gehörte Fuchs zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts zu den Begründern der wissenschaftlichen Botanik. - Naezu druckfrisches, sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar auf feinstem Bütten.

The first German edition of Vitruvius, edited by Walter Hermann Ryff, the Strassbourg physician, mineralogist and mathematician. The majority of the woodcut illustrations are based on those of Cesariano's Como 1521 edition. T are well printed, strong and very pleasing images. A few others are copied f Giocondo's illustrations and the images of the orders are copied from the fou book of Serlio. Ryff went on in 1548 to produce the first edition of Vitruvi translated into the German language. Bookplate. Neatly rebacked and retippe else very good.

First published in Cologne in 1539, it was one of Alardus' most popular writings and "its success is to a certain extent to compare with Erasmus' Adagia and similar 16th century compilations". (De Graaf). Alardus (Amsterdam 1491 - Louvain 1544), Dutch humanist, studied and taught at Alkmaar and Louvain, where he was corrector for the printer Thierry Martens. In this way he could make contact with Erasmus, whom he greatly admired. Alardus' greatest achievement was his edition of the works of Rudolph Agricola. Of this 2nd edition exist 6 different issues, which are entirely identical, only with a different printer's address and a different title (see: De Graaf No. 37, note). - A few contemporary marginal annotations.[(1383)]

Bound in old red morocco, gilt, scroll borders, arms of the Duke of Roxburghe in centre of covers, aeg. Hinges cracked; edges and corners rubbed and bumped. Ex libris William Graham, banker, author of Edinburgh, also notable for his penmanship, with his note in ink on fep; also his added simple rubrication by way of ruled underlining and framing of the preface. Inlaid is a photocopy of a half-leaf from P. J. & A. E. Dobell, Booksellers' catalogue of March 1919 from which he purchased this item: this states 'The first of the two issues of the same year and month.' The title-page notes that the material was compiled from "various authors" but names only Prevotius (active 1543-1579), Protestant professor at the University of Lausanne.The Writers to the Signet were those authorised to supervise the use of "the Signet," originally the private seal of the early Scottish Kings. The Society is particularly noted for its Edinburgh library, containing about 65,000 books, almost half of a legal nature. They sold about 25,000 books at auction in 1978. In very good condition. The binding also very good, with only minor damage to the corners. Neo-Latin work on the political structure of the Roman republic.

The lower cover has the allegory of Fortuna (in the shape of an angel with the wheel, a ship, flowers etc.) in the centre; two lines of text below.

"Before receiving the doctorate in medicine Milich had published a commentary on the second book of Pliny's Natural History. He finished its composition in 1534 while professor of mathematics at Wittenberg and it was printed at Hagenau in August, 1535, then again at Schwäbisch Hall in 1538 and at Frankfurt in 1543. If we believe Mylius, this work, although bearing Milich's name, was to a large extent written by Melanchthon. It utilized the erudite Commentary on Pliny's second book which Jacob Ziegler had published in 1531. The author regards the second book of Pliny's Natural History as an admirable brief compendium, comprising the elements of astronomy and meteorology, to prepare students for more advanced studies in physics and astronomy." (Thorndike, V, pp. 387-8). Thorndike, who describes this work at some lenght, also notes its possible influence on Newton and Tycho Brahe. In his commentary Milich regards comets as fumes or earthly exhalations in the upper air, although he does note that many men argue that they have a double motion like stars. He also expands on various other astronomical subjects touched upon by Pliny. The text is illustrated with woodcuts depicting various astronomical phenomena. 210, [6] leaves (withou last blank). La seconda opera è confutazione degli errori di Antonius Raudensis, frate minorita e umanista, professore di eloquenza a Milano, partecipò al Concilio di Basilea. This is apparently the device of the translator, Mauro of Florence, rather than that of the printer.†(Mortimer)“Johannes Sacrobosco was an English scholar and astronomer/astrologer who taught at the University of Paris and wrote the authoritative mediaeval astronomy text Tractatus de Sphaera…He was educated at Oxford University. According to a seventeenth century account, he arrived at the University of Paris on June 5, 1221. In due course, he began to teach the mathematical disciplines at the University of Paris. About 1230, his most well known work, Tractatus de Sphaera, was published. In this book, Sacrobosco discussed the Earth and its place in the Universe. It was required reading by students in all Western European universities for the next four centuries. Its description of the Earth as a sphere and its popularity exposes the nineteenth-century opinion that medieval scholars thought the Earth was flat as a fabrication. In his Algorismus, theorized to have been his first work, Sacrobosco showed himself to be a strong proponent of Arab methods of mathematics, his Algorismus being the first text to introduce Hindu-Arabic numerals and procedures into the university curriculum†(Journal for the History of Astronomy, 16 (1985): 175-221), Size : 8vo, Title within a decorative engraved boarder of the signs of the zodiac. Elaborate initials, and contains a profusion of wood cut text illustrations relating to the globe and astronomical observations. Biondo, Flavio (1392-1463) umanista, segretario apostolico, nato a Forli' nel 1392, morto a Roma nel 1463. Fauno, Lucio antichista e traduttore, originario forse di Gaeta, morto dopo il 1552. Fu membro dell'Accademia dei Vignaiuoli a Roma. Pius II: Enea Silvio Piccolomini, nato a Corsignano (Siena) nel 1405 e morto nel 1464. Eletto pontefice nel 1458. Dal 1436 fu scrittore e abbreviatore del concilio a Basilea, segretario dell'antipapa Felice V. Nel 1445 ottiene il perdono del papa. Vescovo di Trieste (1447), di Siena (1450). Tramezzino, Michele Tipografo, editore e libraio veneziano, figlio di Paolo e fratello di Cipriano, Bernardo e Francesco. Lavoro' sia da solo che con il fratello Francesco. A Venezia fu soprattutto tipografo e libraio e stampo' opere di vario genere, a Roma fu soprattutto editore di libri giuridici, e si servi' delle tipografie di Girolama Cartolari, Antonio Blado e Vittorio Eliano. A Venezia aveva bottega in contrada S. Gregorio. M. nel 1579; suo erede fu Michele il giovane, figlio di Giuseppe e nipote di Francesco.

"Daß von dem Urrömer gerade dieses Buch erhalten ist, liegt am Thema: Landwirtschaft ist während der ganzen römischen Literaturgeschichte über Varro, Vergil, Columella, Gargilius Martialis bis hin zu Palladius, eines der am konstantesten bearbeiteten Fachgebiete geblieben - über die Jahrhunderte hin sichtbares Denkmal der Verwurzelung des römischen Volkes in seinem bäuerlichen Ursprung" (KLL 2362). Das Werk verwirrte durch seine Formlosigkeit, innerhalb eines Konstruktionsprinzips aus lockerer Aneinanderreihung sind Abschweifungen und Einschübe eingebracht; auf das Prooemium folgen Anweisungen für die Einrichtung des Gutes, Vorschriften für die im Jahreslauf anfallenden Arbeiten, dann jedoch Notizen, Rezepte, Ratschläge und dergleichen. Geschrieben in einer Sprache aus Knappheit, Feierlichkeit, eindrucksvoller Prägnanz. - Varro (116 - 27 v.d.Z.) gilt als der größte römische Gelehrte; seine Schrift Res rusticae ist uns vollständig überliefert. Im öffentlichen Leben erreichte er den Posten eines Praetor, im Bürgerkrieg kämfte er auf des Pompeius Seite. - Palladii Werk folgt dem Gang der Arbeiten innerhalb des Jahresablaufes; sein Stil ist nüchtern. Eigene Beobachtungen unterstützen die Verwendung älterer Autoren. Zum hier ausführlich behandelten Weinanbau cf. Simon: Bacchica I, p. 53 sq. Auch die wichtigen Kommentare von Vettori zu Cato und Varro sowie Beroaldos botanische Anmerkungen und Aldus Manutius' Bauernkalender sind enthalten. Einband an Gelenken, Ecken und Kanten restauriert, Vergoldung stellenweise minimal berieben. Die ersten drei Bll. mit je zwei kleinen Fleckchen; nur bisweilen leicht fleckig, sonst frisch. Titolo manoscritto al dorso. --cc.4 nn., cc. 304 + 1 pag bianca. Eleganti fregi di capoverso e qualche capolettera ornato a "fond criblè". Ricco indice, spiegazione dei vocaboli e prefazione datata 1538. Presumibilmente l'edizione originale è quella di Colonia del 1539 citata da Adams. Nonostante accurate ricerche non abbiamo trovato riferimenti bibliografici della nostra edizione, escluso il BM.STC e in Jocher che attesta la rarità di notizie biografiche sull'autore, importantissimo al suo tempo,e che la sua figura meriterebbe di essere analizzata più profondamente, così pure le sue opere. Questa nostra contiene molti riferimenti ai lavori di G. CRISOSTOMO, SAN BASILIO, ORIGENE, CIPRIANO, SAN GIROLAMO, SANT' AGOSTINO, SAN BERNARDO, LATTANZIO, SENECA ecc.Dal titolo sembra che l'opera sia divisa in tre volumi, mentre come attesta l'indice, è ben completa così. JEDEN TAG EIN NEUES ANGEBOT IM ADVENTSKALENDER AUF MEINER EIGENEN ANGEBOTSEITE! Sacrobosco, möglicherweise englischer Abstammung, weilte ab 1230 in Paris. Die "Sphaera" wurde nach einem Bericht des Bartholomaeus von Parma während des Aufenthaltes an der Universität zu Paris noch vor dem "Computus" verfaßt. Dies war für vier Jahrhunderte, bis ins 17. hinein, das klarste, elementarste und gebräuchlichste Lehrbuch der Astronomie und Kosmographie, ein Standardwerk des Universitätsunterrichtes, basierend auf dem geozentrischen System. Das Werk ist in vier Kapitel eingeteilt, deren erstes die Lehre von der Kugel, vom Pol der Welt, von den neun Sphären in der Welt, und von der Gestalt und den Elementen der Welt darlegt. Das zweite erklärt die Kreise mit astronomischer Bedeutung: den Äquinoktialkreis, Äquator, Tierkreis &c; das nächste behandelt den Auf- und Untergang der Tierkreiszeichen, die Länge von Tag und Nacht sowie die sieben Klimate. Das letzte ist den Kreisen und Bewegungen der Planeten und der Sonne gewidmet und beschreibt die Ursachen von Sonnen- und Mondfinsternissen. Quellen sind Ptolemaeus und al-Fargani. Diese Übersetzung ins Italienische rührt von dem Protestanten Antonio Brucioli, berühmt für seine Übersetzung des Neuen Testamentes, aufgrund dieses, seines Glaubens wurden bei den Exemplaren Titel und Vorwort entfernt und sein Name vom ersten Textblatt getilgt. Einband gewellt, kleine Bezugfehlstellen, leicht fleckig, etwas gebräunt. Es fehlen wie stets anfangs zwei Blatt mit Titel und Widmung. Erstes Textblatt wie stets mit kleiner Läsur, dadurch etwas Textverlust. Die ersten drei Blatt des Textes mit Marginalien v.a.H. Sehr selten. - - - Later limp vellum, worn. 19 woodcut-illustrations. Some old marginal annotations. The translator's name is obliterated on the titlepage and elsewhere.
